Compaq 2500 laptop blank screen

Q: Compaq 2500 laptop blank screen

Yes, its possible, two screen screwups in one night. And with the same company too. My brother has a Compaq 2500 and yesterday, one of his fans on his heatsink went out. So, being the computer brother, I open up his laptop and unscrew everything to get to the fans(very very carefully), install the fans, put everything back together as it looked and turned the computer back on. The fans worked great, only I had a new problem. The screen was blank. Now, in my previous post, I mentioned how the backlight wouldn't work. Well, this was the opposite. The backlight worked perfectly, just that the screen wouldn't display anything. I was thinking, maybe its just the video component, not the screen. But, when I plugged in an external monitor, sure enough, the external worked and the internal didn't. Backlight works, no input from the computer. I reopened it and made sure all connections were secure. Any suggestions? (A hammer sounds really good, but its not my computer )

I tried connecting a monitor to the laptop but still nothing

What could it be? What steps can i take next?

I have seen people offering to repair laptops such as mine for about 70-80 on Ebay but i am unsure if my symptoms qualify.

Please can someone offer me advice? Im willing to try a number of things as need this for 2nd year of Uni (computing)

Thanks in advance

You may have to press a keyboard key to enable an external monitor. If you have already done this, the motherboard or CPU may be fried. Laptop motherboards and CPU are constantly subjected to overheating, specially if you place an operating laptop on a bed or carpeted floor often

Hello lilevee22,

Before the problem started was anything added to or installed on the system?

Try booting to Last Known Good or Safe Mode.

Restart the computer during the boot process repeatedly tap "F8" you should get

the Advanced Options.

Let us know if able to get the system to boot with either option.

I have a Compaq V3000 that has been working pretty well until I installed Windows Vista about 6 months ago. Then it started shutting off all the time randomly like 5 minutes after I would turn it on and I got that to stop. Then randomly I came home and my computer screen was black and I turned it off and took the battery out; however, the lights on the keypad stayed on...even the power light. Then when I took out the power cord and put it back it the lights turned off. Finally, after several tries, I got my computer to turn on all the way. Then I turned it back off that night and the next morning it would not turn back on. I have been working on it for over a week now and still get the same outcome. Here's exactly what happens:

I turn my computer on...then the Compaq startup screen comes up...then the screen goes black and when I try to hit F10 or F8, a real fast message comes and goes...it's hard to even read...but it says "Operating system not found." It did this before I got it to turn on that last time too...but then I got it to turn on. But now I just keep getting the same outcome. I got the F10 page to come up one time and I was told that my harddrive looked like it was going bad but they couldn't tell for sure.

Please help! : )

A:Compaq laptop screen goes blank after turning on

Well I see two possible solutions. A. OS problem or B. your HDD is going bad.

So what i would recommend is if you have a old HDD laying around use it and try reinstalling your os on it. if it works then your HDD is probably bad so purchase a new one.

Do you have any external harddrives hooked up to your system?

Answer me about the external first before proceeding

Hi everyone. Been all over the net researching and researching with obviously no luck. I desperately need the Network Controller for both my Compaq 2500 and 2100 laptops. I installed new internal network cards on both, and the computer says it reconizes the cards, and only says that the drivers are not installed. I tried to make XP find the drivers, and did everything I could, to no avail. This all happened AFTER I cleaned the HDD's in both laptops and installed fresh copies of XP's. I did not know XP were not detecting the network cards, and installed all of the programs necessary for work beforehand.
So therein lies the problem. Any ideas anyone? Thanks! If you need any othr info, just let me know.

Hi all. I'm new here but not what you would call new to computers. I have a Compaq Presarion laptop sitting behind me that is giving me fits! A friend of mine got it as a gift. Its got a 1.5 ghz celeron processor, 256 mb of ram, and a 40 gig hard drive.

Here's the problem. When he got it, windows was corrupted and wouldn't boot to windows without a ton of error messages. He told me to wipe the drive clean and re-install XP. He handed me a fresh, recently purchased version of Win XP home and told me to do away with HP's proprietary version of XP. I figured, easy enough. I've done this kind of thing many times with many older computers.

Well, here's the problem. It won't let me do a full format from the XP CD during the first few pages of setup. I can do a quick format of the drive and continue on. However, during setup, I get errors. I've formatted and reinstalled the OS several different times, not always getting the same error message. I completed the install once (with errors) and when I got to the desktop, there was no start button or system clock .... or even the usual recycle bin icon. Nothing was there .... I could ctrl+alt+delete to reboot, but that was the only way to shut the system down.

What is different about these compaq presario notebooks. How can you do a low level format .... or a full format for that matter. How can you get it to take a regular microsoft version of windows XP? I've already wasted countless hours fighting with this laptop.

A:Problems installing Win XP on Compaq Presario 2500 Laptop

Bump ... there appears to be no pattern to the errors I'm experiencing. Can anyone help?

Hi,
Let me first apologize for my lack of technical jargon. I know very little about computers, but am currently on prac placement in Vietnam and am having computer issues - if i can't explain them in English i certainly won't be able to in Vietnamese.

My compaq Presario B1200 laptop (with vista business as the os) is refusing to work. I can turn it on and get to the the log on screen, but after i enter my password the computer thinks for a while but then the screen goes blank (black) with no writing or error messages, but the cursor is on the screen.

I have tried restarting the computer from the password screen but the computer just freezes. I also cannot start the computer in safe mode - from safe mode i can press ctrl-alt-del but clicking on any of the options (inc task manager) doesn't work. Sometimes i can get a screen which is black with some writing on it c/:somethingsomething> and i can type in here, but i don't know what would work (i have tried explorer.exe).

I have been looking around online and people seem to be having similar problems but none of their solutions have helped me. I have tired 'last known configuration', performing memory self test and primary hard drive tests in bios, and have tried removing the battery, holding down the powerbutton and restarting without the battery. I have also tried using the fn + f4 and fn + f5. I cannot attach it to another monitor as i am out of my home country and don't have access t... Read more

Vista Display Problems

Hi, Your problem does seem to stem from the graphic driver update from Microsoft.
You uninstalled it, got desktop back, but now it looks like Windows 98.
In 'Search box' type 'appearance' (enter)
You should see a box with options about the quality of the display.
I would think you will have the option 'adjust for best performance' (A dot next to it)
That means (on a Laptop) you will have a minimum quality, but fast screen display.
It's still most likely you don't have the best Graphic drivers installed.
Tick the option, 'Let windows decide what's best for my computer'
That should give you a better display. (If no better then........)
You need to find out what graphics chip you have. In 'Search' box type 'dxdiag'
In the window you see, click on the Display Tab. Note down the NAME,
MANUFACTURER and VERSION of the Graphic chip. ( Please read #1 lower down)
'Google' that information and you will get to the makers site, (most likely Nvidia or ATI)
Go to 'downloads' and search for your option, get the best match you can see.
Download the package to 'Desktop' or somewhere you can find again.
Right click on it's icon, choose 'Run as administator', and follow prompts.
You might need to reboot, but your display should be 'as new'... Read more

Hi, I have a gateway solo 2500 laptop (12.1'' tft screen)

The thing stopped working 3 yrs ago. Power on, cd spins, hd spins, fan spins.. nothing after that. Wasn't about to pay gateway $400 to fix it. Recently figured it out.. I just needed to reseat the processor. Problem is that in the last 3 years somewhere the screen got cracked so bad that I can only see a small fraction of it, though external monitor is fine.

So I purchased another Gateway Solo 2500 with a 12.1'' tft screen and I want to swap the screens (the other one I bought is a 266mhz MMX processor whereas mine is a celeron 400) so how do I do that.

Has anyone done this? Are there any things I should watch out for, is it super simple or is this something to leave to the pros?

I'm great with desktops, not so experienced with laptops.

thanks... closetgeekla

A:How to replace laptop screen (Gateway 2500)

Are the cases identical ? If they are, then you need to start taking the unit apart until you get down to removing the Lid's hinges. There should be a cable that goes from the MOBO to the display. Unplug it and swap lids.

This is based on my experience disassembling my HP laptop to fix the connection cable, which was being pinched by the hinge.

Of course the other possibility is to swap the newer MOBO and drives into the other case's base unit.

I have an old Compaq Armada 3500 laptop that I bought years ago to help me through college. After that it kinda gathered dust a little until recently when I wanted to dig it back out and just use it to play a few games on and whathaveyou. It booted up fine when I first did it but it soon transpired that it was absolutely chocablock with viruses and spyware and it was running terribly.

So, on what now looks to have been a foolish move, I did a C: drive format in the hope of popping in a Win98SE installation disc and have it boot from that to re-install Windows.

However, now it won't boot up past the COMPAQ initial screen and a "602: Diskette Read Driver Error" or something keeps flashing up.

Is there any way to get into the BIOS settings to set the CD Drive as the first in the boot-up line-up, or are there recovery discs I can download that'll at least get me into DOS?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

A:Compaq Armada 3500 Laptop Won't Boot Up Past Compaq Screen...

Well you should be able to access the CMOS Bios by using either the delete, F1 or F2 keys (sometimes f10). Then under the Bios you should see the Boot Sequence and be able to change it from there. But either way, you should be able to get past the Compaq splash screen. Try setting your boot sequence and see if that helps.

the DVD drive stopped working and now the hard drive has errors.

I got an external USB DVD drive on it, but chkdsk cannot seem to repair the hard drive.

Anyone got any idea how to fix it or recover data off of the hard drive. I got a year's worth of work on it, and none of my files show up. Just "File record segment XXXXX is unreadable" errors about a million of them.

A:Compaq Presario 2500

Suggest you stop using the drive until you can recover the data.
It is likely that drive has failed or is going into total failure.
You can purchase a replacement drive for $42 to $75 depending on size and whether you get the 5400 rpm or the 7200 rpm in a 40, 60, or 80 GB model.
You can obtain an adapter to put the drive into a desktop unit as a slave. The adapter converts the mobile 2.5" hard drive by adapting the pin set for the desktop EIDE cable. Adapters are available many places, including www.geeks.com, www.cyberguys.com, www.frys.com, www.outpost.com, and others... cheaply at $2.45 to $9.99 depending on where you get one.
Then you can usually drag and drop the data from the mobile drive to a desktop drive, or use drive recovery software, then you can burn a CD to then migrate it to your new drive... or just use a USB transfer.
( We work on a great number of the Presario 2500's with identical problems. Did you know there are 434 different models of the Presario 2500 series of laptops?)
With the new drive, you just use the recovery set that came with your laptop, or buy the set for about $30, including shipping, from the Compaq parts department.
But you likely will not ever be able to use that drive again. Thus, you do not want to stress it further by more restart or rescue attempts.

I have a Compaq Presario C300. Somehow the screen cracked and of course was not under warranty. I purchased a replacement screen online and followed the directions to replace. It was relatively simple, however, now when I boot up the computer, the backlight comes on for the whole screen, but shows up blank. Did I just not fully connect something? Is there something simple I can check before I bring the whole darn thing in for service anyway? This is what I was trying to avoid in the first place. The whole laptop was only 800 and the new replacement screen was $199 (as opposed to the quote for $450 I got to have it replaced).

Anyone have any ideas I can try?

A:Replacing Compaq Presario C300 LCD Screen: blank screen now

You have to make sure you bought right screen for your laptop. Check your connection cable hasn't any damage on it. If it still shows only blank screen, i think not coming enough power for screen (wrong screen).

Can anyone suggest how to stop my CPU running intermittently at 100% please. I have scanned PC with MS Security Essentials, A-Squared Free, Spybot S&D and am running Windows Defender - nothing malicious found. Using Process Explorer, it showed many high SVCHost.EXEs running. I have manually turned some of these off now and CPU running at 30-60%. Not realy sure what I am doing and how to turn things off permanently - any suggestions greatly accepted!

PC has 1G of RAM and use an Intel 2.6Ghz Celeron processor - it's an old but useful laptop and would like to use it at it's normal speed again.

Many thanks.

Upgraded my Presario 2568 to WinXP, everything works, except the on/off button for the integrated wireless lan (front right side near blue LED and IR). This worked before the upgrade from XPhome. There is a heading under Start Menu called Utilities:

Start Menu>Utilities>Wireless Configuration

There is a dialogue box that opens, and says "The following devices are controlled by the wireless on/off button. Click an icon below to turn one device on or off."

There is nothing in this list. Anyone know how to get the HP WLan 54g device listed in there?

Have you gone to the HP website and download all the updated XP Device Drivers? You may also want to check the FAQ on that site to see if its a known issue.

One last thing, Go into Control Panel -> System -> device manager and see if there's any missing drivers or errors.

My Windows laptop PC Compaq Presario 2500 runs very slow. There aren't that many programs but things like opening folders, opening programs, even right clicking take a long time. Starting up takes forever as well.

I have tried doing a full system adware/virus scan, deleting the temp. internet files, and the temp. computer files that show up in the WINDOWS folder of the hard drive. Is there a program that can make a computer run faster? Perhaps there are something that I'm missing. Or is this model laptop such a slow computer that no matter what I do it's always going to be this way?

I was thinking of getting an apple mac laptop but I want to try and see if I can do some simple steps to get this running faster than this. Internet surfing in Firefox is actually fast at least. The keyboard isn't bad in any way and besides a mouse hub hardware problem (can't be fixed) it's in great shape. Please let me know what I can do here, thank you much.

Hi,

During the last few months, my laptop has been used a considerable amount. Unfortunately, my sister borrowed it while I was away at my orientation for college. She broke parts of the keyboard (the parts holding the key into place, and some other things), and I am currently using it mostly taped together. Lucky for me, the tape is holding and still working...

However, my dad who has been a computer guy for many years, wants to replace the keyboard unit, so that way when I get to college it won't be as bad.

The laptop itself is a couple years old, and I don't want to get a new one.

So I was wondering if there are any step by step tutorials for a Compaq Presario 2500. Any help would be much appreciated.

A:Compaq Proliant 2500 Server Cannot Load OS / Boot Issues

Compaq BIOS setup is invoked by pressing F10 at bootup IIRC, the RAID/SCSI BIOS has its own key combination that is shown to you.

AFAIK you need to have the Compaq system partition for the embedded BIOS setup utility to work. If the hard drives were wiped, then you need to download the System Configuration Utility floppies from HP and use those. Or use the SmartStart CD that you hopefully got with the server. If not, then you could ask your local friendly HP representative for one.

Hi all, I'm new here, registered just to get help with my problem. I have a Compaq Presario CQ61-420US Laptop, it will be a year old at the end of April 2011. It has Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS. Never had a problem with it till now. I am planning on doing a memory upgrade (currently has 3.0 GB DDR2 PC6400 in 2 slots (1gb + 2gb), ordered a 2.0 GB chip to bring it up to 4.0 GB total memory)

Anyway I wanted to make sure I could do the swap myself so I unplugged the power cord, took out the battery, unscrewed the panel on the bottom of the laptop case, found the memory chips, took out both chips very carefully, undoing the tabs holding the chips in, took them out, inspected them, put them back in the way I took them out, making sure the tabs on the chips were lined up, maing sure the contacts were making contact. Put everything back together, ordered the new 2GB memory chip.

Today I went to power up the laptop, battery in and power cord plugged in and everything lit up like normal except the screen never came on, the power button stayed lit, the network status light stayed on, the power indicator was lit, two white lights were flashing at the same time every 5 seconds though, which is abnormal, one at the top right of the keyboard which I believe is the Num-lock light and one on the far left of the keyboard which I believe is the Caps-Lock light. And thats it, nothing ever happens it never turns on (blank screen) even after 20 min's. SO I held the power button down til... Read more

I have a Compaq Presario CQ56-101SG which does not start anymore.I updated the BIOS from Version F.00 to F.18 which forces the device to reboot which went well. But after a shutdown the notebook does not start, it hangs with a blank screen, power LED and WiFi LED lit up and Caps Lock LED is blinking about 1x/sec. What I tried to recover:* Remove battery and AC adapter, press power button for about a minute and try to power up again with AC connect. --> Same bad state as before.* Press power button for 5 sec while no power connected (battery removed), reconnect AC, press [Win]+[B] while power button starts the system. --> Same bad state as before.* The same as before but this time with a 2GB USB thumb drive (FAT16 formatted, "HP_TOOLS" named, put "01604F06.BIN" - an older BIOS version binary - into root directory) connected to USB port. --> Same bad state as before. - Did I anything wrong when trying to recover the BIOS?- May the name of the BIOS file needs to be something else?- Is there anything else I can try to get the device up and running again? Kind regardsChristian

I bought a Compaq Presario laptop a while ago (at least 2 years) and since then have traded it for something else to a friend of my now ex-wife. The screen quit working for the person so I bought it back for the charger which I needed anyways.

When I shine a light on the screen I can see everything and the computer works fine. What I want to know is if there are any settings on the computer that could be causing it to do this or if the screen is simply shot. Any help would be appreciated; I tried adjusting the brightness from the [Fn] + F7 and [Fn] + F8 keys but that didn't work.

Hi, my Compaq prosignia 150 laptop has developed a glitch. The screen keeps going dark - even though none of the programs i have open stop running or crash (when I angle the screen to the light I can very faintly make out the desktop/active windows, all of which function as normal). When I then shut down the screen lights up again on the 'windows is shutting down' screen, before completing the shut-down. Does anyone have a clue how I can fix this? (OS is windows 98). Thank you!

A:Dark screen on Compaq laptop

ATT,

Welcome to the Forum. Seems like there is a lot of this going around lately!

The problem is caused by the Flourescent backlight turning off. The causes can be many. My personal experience is that it is faulty wiring going from the base unit to the LCD panel.

Have you tried shutting the lid and reopening it...repeatedly. Or simply flexing the unit partially open/closed? If it flickers or goes ON even momentarily, it is probably the cable.

If the unit is under warranty by all means send it in for service!

I bought a nice HP laptop, but I can't figure out how to remove the damn compaq splash screen that you see every time I turn it on. I changed the boot screen, I changed the login screen, but inbetween is this stupid looking Compaq screen that I wanna delete. Any ideas?

As far as I know it is in the BIOS - so short answer is, you can't remove it.

Hi Guys

I was given a HP Compaq 6375s today with a shattered screen but the base works fine and I also have a Toshiba Satellite A200 that is dead/doesnt boot but the screen is in good condition. Would it be possible to put the Toshiba screen into the HP? They are both 15.4 WXGA screens with the same resolution when looking at the specs online.

Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks peeps.

Hello there.
Over the past week, I have had two problems with my Compaq laptop, both screen (or resolution) related.

A few days ago, I was innocently browsing online when the resolution on my laptop became HUGE, way bigger than safe mode resolution. I have an irrational fear of large resolutions (or in this case, small), so I just shut my laptop off using the power button.

A few minutes ago, I was watching something full-screen when the screen suddenly became very light brown and unresponsive. Just like above, I shut it off with the power button.

Can someone please advise me on this? I don't have the money for a new laptop so I'd like to get this problem fixed asap.

Some basic info:
My laptop is a Compaq Presario CQ50-110M laptop. It runs on Windows Vista, has a 4 GHz processor and has 2GB of RAM. The graphics card is a bog-standard Nvidia graphics card usually found in laptops.

Thanks very much for your help in advance!

Try hooking the laptop up to an external monitor. This will help you determine if the screen is shot of if it's something more internal like the video card, for example.

hi, i have an old compaq laptop running windows vista. just yesterday i was using it and i had to reboot it.. well when it booted back up and i signed in to my administrator acct..the screen turned to a solid yellow color. i can't see anything else on the screen besides the yellow. but when i sign into my kids acct, i can see the screen just fine. before all this happened, i was trying to uninstall the program called INTERNET DOWNLOAD MANAGER, which apparently had a bad key. i was trying to follow a youtube tutorial on removing the key from the .REG, and afterwards, i started having this problem. what could be causing this and how do i fix it.

I'd try doing a system restore to see if that fixes it. Sounds like an issue with the registry entries you changed.

My daughter has noticed some issues with the display on her Compaq laptop, red vertical lines during boot and colours fading/changing while in Windows. White changes to pale blue, other colours show almost as if its in 256 colour mode although its not.

Drivers have been updated, totally removed, reinstalled etc. The problem does not show on an external monitor.

Has anyone come across this kind of issue before or have any idea of the likely cause please?

the screen was slightly damaged it had a couple of realy thin lines on the right hand side of the screen, but still worked great.
I bought the same model cheap that had a good screen on it but had mobo problems,

when I attached the screen back on it is showing a display like the backlight has gone, I have swapped and put the old screen back on but it still just showing a very faint image like no back light ! I have swapped the invertors around the cables around, reinstalled windows tried different ram, hard reseting the machine, stripping it back down to the mobo 3 times to make sure there is no loose connections etc, what could be causing this, I cant get neither screen to work ? some1 please help ! also the laptop works perfect when attached to my tv via vga ,
I thank you for any advice you can give me "I am soooo tired and depressed because of this now but wont give up "

When I turn on the laptop, it seems okay, until it shows the Windows Error Recovery. It asks which option I want to choose
-Launch Startup Repair- or -Start Windows Normally-
And if I pick either one, it looks like it's going to go to the login screen, but it's stops loading with just the background of the login screen.

I've tried removing the battery and running it w/ the power cord.

It uses Windows 7 if that helps at all.

Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?

Need help here.

I have a HP laptop DV9543cl with 32bit Vista. Last Thursday (6/3/2010), Vista update icon showed up and asked me to install the update. As always, i did that. Once install was done, it asked for a reboot which i did. It started booting up again and when it finished Windows logo screen, it went blank and no display with all the other lights were in correct status. I waited for a long time before attempting a reboot. Since then i don't see anything on the screen after the initial BIOS screen (Which is also all jumbled up). I tried F8 (BIOS) and F11(Restore) but no screen. Don't know what to do but i am pretty sure that Laptop is working ok just not displaying anything. I am going to try Remote desktop on it now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My screen has columns which are not viewable. There is about an inch of viewable clear space, followed by a garbled column about an inch wide, then another inch of good viewable space, then another inch of a garbled column, and so on all the way across the screen from left to right. It looks like a grid of vertical blind columns. I can drap a window left and right and the contents of the window are viewable as I move it left and right. I hope I'm making sense here. I'm not sure if this is a hardware issue or if i have a display setting wrong.

Following this my screen has been showing some strange stuff. There always seems to be some trailing shadow after every color change. some lines keep appearing. For example if a window pops up a some lines appear on the periphery as if some shadow is lurking.

How can i rectify this problem. Please advice.

Hi everyone,

I have a compaq presario 2100 series laptop. It has 448 MB of ram and amd athlon xp 2800 plus 508mhz. This laptop runs beatifully with service pack 2.

The one big probelm however is:

The laptop screen decides to turn green by itself evey once in a while! Not completely green but almost all the areas where black is supposed to be displayed i get a horrigle fluoroscen light green. It stays like that for a few days sometimes and then reverts to normal. Sometimes however it becomes normal in a few hours. Rebooting makes no difference.

Radeon IGP 320M is my display adapter and it has the latest drivers. This comp is around 3 years old.
Please help an ailing computer!

Hi All,

Hope you can help me.

I have a Compaq Presario C300 Laptop which i am working on.

The screen is faint so at 1st i thought it would be the backlight or the inverter. I changed the inverter to a new working one and no change was seen. I then changed the screen to a working one and that still didn't fix the problem.

I have hooked up the computer to an external monitor and it works fine.

I now am unsure what the problem can be other than the cable.

Can anyone else give me an idea as to what the problem is?

Thank you in advance.

Hi everyone
Got a bit of a problem which I need help on please:

The screen has gone blank but works on an external monitor, this only started to happen after I let my son use my laptop, he and his friends have connected their iPads etc for films and music...but strangely, sometimes it comes on without any problem when I boot up as normal, so it is still working, this has happened on other occasions I am sure it can be rectified but I don't have a clue really. See below for what I have tried so far:

1. Checked monitor display - it shows the external monitor as the primary display only and I can't seem to get it to display the laptop monitor.

2. Checked the internet for possible solutions but could not properly understand everything to rectify the problem.

3. Could it possibly be anything to do with the amount of memory that has beenused up? (my son has used most of it for his music & films etc.)

Please help

Cheers folks

I've got a problem with my laptop, a 2010 HP G60-635DX. First, a little history. This was my wife's laptop until she dropped it and broke the display screen. We hooked it up to a monitor and she was good to go. Last Christmas I got her a new computer and again she was all set. In the meanwhile I've been using this old Dell laptop from 2006 with WinXP in it. Works, but is slow as all get out. A few months ago I decided to use my wife's old computer for myself. It comes with Windows 7 and works quite well. Last June I made the mistake of trying the Windows 10 upgrade, and what a disaster that turned out to be. So I reverted back to Win7, but I lost all the drivers that came with it, so I was stuck. So recently I bought a new screen for my wife's old computer, and I installed it today. So guess what? The screen works fine, but all I get is a blank white screen Nothing at all! It's as if the computer can't display anything at all. I just don't understand it. The computer fires up, but that's it. No start screen, no nothing. Just a blank white screen.
Anybody have any ideas as to what's wrong, and how I could fix this?

Sorry to hear that. Please refer to the Blank Screen LED Error Codes document from HP Support. It sounds like a "General system board failure." The explanation says to contact HP for assistance. The motherboard might need to be replaced, and you will probably require the assistance of a technician to fix the problem.

Hi there, internet,

I'm having some issues with my Compaq Presario C762NR laptop. It's a couple years old.

Anyway, recently I'm having two issues that may or may not be related.

Issue one: On the slightest of physical shocks (say, putting the computer down onto a desk) the screen can go black. This isn't "completely unlit-computer-is-off black," this is "screen-is-backlit-black." The computer is unresponsive and the only way I can get back online is by holding the power button down until it turns off and then turning it back on.

Issue two: Occasionally, when I set my laptop down, I'll feel a slight static electric shock (usually discharged near the left USB port). The screen will then go crazy. It looks like lines of multi-colored pixels. Again, the only thing I can do to get my computer up and running is doing a hard-reset.

Third potentially related issue I just remembered: Occasionally, when I try to turn on my computer, the display won't turn on. the power and hard drive LED lights turn on, and I can hear the hard drive spinning, but the screen doesn't turn on. I usually turn it off by holding the power button and then turn it on again. Usually this works, but sometimes I have to do the hard-reboot three or four times before the screen actually comes on with the computer.

Please help me! I desperately need my computer and I do not have the money to replace it right now. I want advice!!!

NEC Ready 120LT Laptop

Problem:
1. I plugged in the power cord from the computer into the electrical outlet. The Power Status LED came on. The fan sound came on. The screen was blank. I pressed the Power button; still the screen was blank. The Hard Disk Activity LED (I checked and made sure the Hard Disk was in place and secure) also, did not light up. Nothing happens. Screen is blank.

Attempts at troubleshooting:

1. The hard drive is good. I tested it in another Ready 120 LT of a co-worker. It works fine.

2.I tried pushing the Clear CMOS Button. I made sure as stated in instruction on page 2.4 of the Ready 120 LT Users Guide, that I " Turn off the computer, remove the battery, disconnect the AC adapter and press the button once again." It says, " there is an access hole in the compartment cover. To press the button, use a paper clip or pen point to push it."

3. Once this was completed, I plugged in the power cord from the computer into the electrical outlet. The Power Status LED came on. The fan sound came on. The screen was blank. I pressed the Power button; still the screen was blank. The Hard Disk Activity LED (I checked and once again made sure the Hard Disk was in place and secure) also, did not light up.

4. Is there some reason when I press the Power button the computer won't screen won't come on and Windows 98 start playing?

5. Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated.

COuld be that the laptop has met it's maker. Could be any number of things causing it....power problem internally, dead CPU. Have you checked the battery out? Take it out completely and then try the external AC adapter.

It sounds like you have no backlight, this is normally the inverter that provides the power for the backlight, though it can be the lamp itself. If this happened while you were changing parts in the laptop, I'd first check and make SURE everything got connected correctly.'

Hello,

I have a 1 year old Gateway laptop model NV52. For some reason, every now and then, my mouse stops working, then the screen goes blank. Most times it's black, but I have seen it turn other colors. At that point, nothing will get me out of this except holding the power button down until the computer turns off. When I restart it, everything seems fine until it decides to screw up again. That might be a few hours, a day, a week, I never know. I have a windows 7 laptop that the screen went blank on but it worked on an external monitor. I opened it up and unplugged and replugged in the video cable and booted it again. The screen worked! yay! So I rebooted a few times without logging into the computer and the screen continued to work.

After the 3rd reboot I logged into the computer let it load up and then rebooted the computer. The screen went blank...won't display again except on an external monitor. I'm quite certain, though I haven't done it yet, that if I were to open the computer up and re seat the video cable again it would work until the next time I restarted after logging in.

I've never seen a computer do this before...and it's driving me up a wall...tried to press the keys to switch between computer/monitor and extended display but that didn't change anything -_-

HELP!!!

Edit:

I was told by one of our helpdesk employees that when she plugged it into her external monitor it was on system restore and she did the system restore and it came up...but after logging in and rebooting it went blank again. She then brought it to me and I did the above.

the Windows XP loading screen (the one with the green bar that moves across).

Hello all. This is on a Dell Inspiron 8600 with Windows XP SP2 that was working for fine for the past year or so until I went to turn it on a few hours ago.

It will show graphics on the screen fine up until the Windows login screen (where I normally choose the user and enter the passwords). It will show the green loading bar screen and then when it normally goes to the login screen, now it just shows black.

I'm currently using the said laptop, but hooked up to a LCD monitor so the computer itself is functional...just not the monitor.

I've tried restarting in Safe Mode with VGA options. Under those conditions, it will show the login and work normally...it just looks silly on a laptop. When I try to change the display settings in Safe Mode...the screen goes blank again.

Any suggestions or help? Sadly, I don't have the Window disk that came with the computer.

Thanks.

I was playing a game when the screen on my laptop went blank/black and did not come back on.  I shut it down with the power button and tried to restart it. The fan comes on, but the screen stays black, with no error message.  White code lights next to Caps Lock and number pad blink approximately every 4 seconds (16 times per minute), otherwise, there is no no set sequence to them, and they stay white, never red.  It does this with or without the power cord attached, so I've been told (by Staples) that it is not the main battery but that there could be a smaller battery inside that needs to be replaced? However, I wanted to check here before having anyone open it up. Thanks very much for your time.

For some time now i have this weird problem with it. When switched on, i have a difficult time "convincing" it to leave the LCD display on.

It goes like this. Turn on from power button. LCD comes on for a few seconds until the first checks start. Then goes off. From that point up to blindly managing getting into Windows the screen is off. When everything is finished loaded and the hard drive LED stops blinking, i start pressing the LCD on/off key combination (Fn)(F7) or the little notch under the LCD panel that turns off the monitor when the lid is closed. If i do that for some time, if i get lucky the display stays on. Otherwise it keeps going off.

I do not think it has to do anything with any drivers because i managed format and re-install operating system and software back in April. The monitor problem has been around for longer.

However, in some occasions the monitor stays on when i press the power button only seconds after the AC socket is switched on.

Can someone please tell me if this is something that can be fixed and if there is a way to fix it (preferably avoiding taking it to the dealer as i do not think it would worth the cost to repair).

The laptop is running on Win98SE.

Thanks

I have a friends laptop which when booting the screen is blank (totally) and there are 1 long then 2 short beeps. From what I see from beep codes this indicates graphics issue. Does this mean the motherboard is gone or could there be another explanation. It's an HP Pavilion dv6000 if that helps??
Thanks AL..

hello,
I get a Dell Inspiron 6000 and the backlight on the screen goes out.
I can still see the screen slightly by using a flashlight aimed directly at the screen.
Here is the hijack this file. I am hopeful that this is a malware problem.

I have a 2 year old HP Pavillion Laptop. Yesterday I got a BSOD, and it said something about the Driver for my Graphics Card failing.

Today I turned on my computer, the screen lit up, but nothing appeared on it. Using my knowledge of my computer, I could still log in, and even played an MP3 off my desktop, and shut down the computer, but the screen remained blank. I connected a monitor to the laptop, but the monitor insisted it had no input, despite working before. I updated the Drivers a week before, and there was no cue that something was wrong before the BSOD, which just darkened my screen for a minute, then switched to the BSOD.

System Specs.
Windows Vista 32-bit SP1
Intel Core Duo CPU T5450 @ 1.66 GHZ
2 GB RAM
NVIDIA GFORCE 8400M GS

I use my Laptop to surf the Web on my Samsung LCD TV. Last week I reformated my HD and reinstalled everything (XP2) (Anti Virus) (Adaware) and set a restore point. Tried then to put the display up on the HDTV and blank my monitor screen. Had to first load the ATI drivers for the Mobility M10(? like a ati 9700 pro) Vid card. Finally got the screen to show where you disable/enable the Laptop Monitor and the TV Display but for some reason it was extending the desktop to the HDTV not cloning. The TV Display enable was greyed out. Somehow I clicked where I shouldn't and now I have NO DISPLAY.

I can cycle with the F5 key to a completely black screen to a grey screen but NO Display.

Tried Safe mode. VGA mode but no screen display.
Tried Safe mode to last known good configurtation, but no screen display.

Came here hoping someone knows a fix before I spend three hours reloading XP1 to XP2 and all the MS fixes in between.

Thanks in Advance for any help replies!

Any help would be great but please take note of my username i,m know next no nothing about repairing/upgrading or anything like that.

A:Blank Screen on my laptop

Remove the battery and power lead
Hold down the power button (on the laptop) for 30 Secs
Re-insert the power lead only
Turn on

If it works, consider purchasing a new battery

Ok, I have left you guys as a last resort as I have asked just about everyone I know with a computer.

Missus was using the lappy today and it froze, she pushed a **** load of buttons to no avail so held down off and then started it up again. Now I have a black screen. It still boots up and you can hear it running away happily, but no pic at all. Tried pluging another monitor in the back but still nothing. I also cant seem to get to the BIOS setion at the start, I tried every single F key possible on start up, even esc. When it starts it makes no beeps at all. just a couple of clicks then the usual humming noise as per usual. One person mention to me the Projector function so as was with his laptop I tried pushing fn and F5 and F8. I did get a screen msg in the end, so I guess I can rule out the broken screen theory

the msg read as follows:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
System32DriversNtfs.sys

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair

No I inserted my Windows disk but it wont run. It will spin it for about 5 seconds then nothing. I tried pressing 'r' on this screen and also reboot with the disk in. Nothing?

I have also noticed when I start the laptop with the power plugged in, it goes straight into charge mode, which I thought only occored when the computer was in a standby mode? I dont remember seeing it light... Read more

I have an HP Pavillion laptop running XP Pro.

My screen has started going blank after it has been running for a short while. Sometimes hitting the function key f4 will bring it back, more often it doesn't help.

Whichever program I'm using continues to work fine--if only I knew the keystrokes to use. Therefore, I can shut it down normally.

Rebooting does not help. Any ideas?

Recently my laptop screen went blank after the desktop started scrolling (as in extended desktop) and a message came up saying my power settings (PowerGear4) were corrupted or something and wouldn't work.

I switched it off to hopefully reset the machine but since then I've had no displays, even though everything boots up.

The laptop still gives an out display onto a spare monitor but the main laptop one does not work. I had the occasional problem when the screen wouldn't restore after going on standby and I had to reboot, but now it's not coming back at all.

It looks like a blank screen in standby mode, but not totally off so there seems to be power going to it. :suspiciou

Is there any way to fix this other than send it away to a specialist? It's only 2 years old (may still have warranty).

It is time to have it serviced... warranty or not... Good luck

its a compaq presario 2100 laptop (almost 8+ years old, sparingly used for the last couple of years), running on windows XP-home edition.

it has had its battery replaced and now the new one too has almost lived its life.but i was having no problems connecting it to the mains and it worked seamlessly.

after checking into updates and refreshing it was left idle for almost a couple of months and when i tried to boot it up it had a blank screen all through and booting lights and fan unit going on and off after an interval of approximately 15-20 seconds until the time i had to manually shut it down by long pressing the start button.

The cables and connections are all secure and tight jointed.

Trying to boot it up in safe mode(F8) also was not rewarding as it maintained status quo,  except the thing that the blinking lights and fan unit has stopped going on and off and has to be manually shut down as it does not display anything for a considerable time.

should i take this as a sign that the system has booted itself?

the system was in no way used for the internet in past and had been refreshed and scanned(with updated MSE) with no virus definitions whatsoever.

can i boot it externally and if that is a probable solution then how?

as i am not a hardware/software person, i have not tried anything on it and am waiting for an expert advice to act on.

A:blank laptop screen

Being such an old laptop, it could be a number of things. A dying power supply, frayed wires (unlikely), malfunctioning motherboard... I doubt it's a virus infection, it shouldn't cause those symptoms anyway, and since you've used it sparingly, it's very unlikely.

Is it possible for you to pull it open and take a look inside? I would suggest going to a local computer store to get it checked, or even a completely new laptop. Eight years is a long ass time.

I have a three year old HP laptop running Windows 7 (64 bit) that is misbehaving. It would not boot up recently, and I believe the root was heat related issues. My son likes to use it while setting on his bed - fan gets covered up and the laptop overheats. I added some large rubber feet to the bottom to improve clearance for the fan and that has helped, to a point. The laptop will boot and I can log into my son's account. After 5-10 minutes, the screen goes blank (50% grey scale, neither bright or completely dark). At that point, nothing seems to bring the screen back, so it is unusable and a hard shut down is necessary. I have cleaned it with Malware Bytes in the past and now have Microsoft Security Essentials installed, so I think/hope any virus issues have been resolved. My suspicion is that this is heat related, but exactly what is failing I do not know. Two months ago I replaced the power jack in the laptop and the power supply because of power connection problems. The battery is shot and will not hold a charge, so the laptop can not be used unless it is connected to the power supply. Since I replaced the power supply and jack, the laptop has been functioning okay. It would crash on occasion, but I attributed that to malware. I had to purge the hard drive earlier this year and restore the system because of a malware infestation. Any help is appreciated.

Hi.
I'm not sure if this is an infection but I am inclined to think it's something more infection and less hardware like I originally thought. Starting about 3 days ago my laptop screen began to flicker in normal mode but it would go back to normal...so I was a bit concerned but didn't think anything of it. Then the flickering progressed to my screen going blank (as if there was a blank screensaver) but the computer was still on and the screen was still "active" just blackish...but not turned off as if it was receiving no power. This is happening more and more but when the screen goes blank the whole computer stops working, if I am transferring files the transfer stops. Everything stops if the screen goes blank.

I thought this was a hardware problem but I've been working in safe mode for the last 12 hours and not had a single flicker or blackout. I'm not sure how to go about looking for something that makes my screen go blank? My norton scan keeps coming clean but I don't know what to do or there is even anything I can do. I feel like if it's hardware based it should be happening in every mode, not just regular mode.
For the record I have an Acer Aspire 5535 with Vista Home premium, norton anti-virus and I use Google chrome (if it matters?).
Thank you,
Rilla

With a desktop a black screen is a black screen. With laptops sometimes the backlight/invertor goes. Can you see anything even very faintly? Also make sure you didn't change the settings to an external monitor (Usually with a Fn + another key combination).

When I turn on my laptop the screen is blank, but when I connect it to a monitor I can see my desktop and use the laptop normally. When the screen was working, before it went black, it would flicker if I moved it open or close. I have changed the inverter out. And under display adapters it shows the graphics card NVIDIA GeForce 8600m GS then under monitors it just shows Generic PnP Monitor. I toke the face plates off and looked to check all connection and are all good. I did send this laptop out to hp to fix the screen, because there was a row of pixels that went out. Then I had to resend it out because the screen was darker in the corners, this was over a year ago and was under warrantee. I am about to buy a new screen but would like to know if there is anything else I should try first?

A:HP Laptop Screen Blank

Can you see any image at all, even very dark? Try shining a torch at the screen when it is turned on to see if you can see anything.

If you get absolutely nothing from that then I would suspect a failed screen as you say you have replaced the backlight / inverter already. The graphics card etc is obviuosly OK as it is outputting fine to a external monitor.

You mean no picture on LCD or on the external monitor?

About the only thing that you can really try is taking out the battery and powering via AC. Also check to see if the machine has a "reset" button on the side or bottom.

I have an older dell inspiron 8000 and the screen is really really dark. You can barely see anything. I've tried the fn f8 thing to no avail. When I hooked it up to an external it shows fine on the external but the laptop screen just kinda blinked on for a hot second then went off. Does this sound like a bad lcd inverter board?
