I've got this legendary socket 939 motherboard DFI LP UT SLI-DR Expert chipset nForce4 SLI almost new only one SATA port is somewhat messed up missing those plastic parts from both sides , bought this baby really cheap ~ 55 $ from well known Romanian e-bay like site okazii.ro , and I put it on my FX-60 dual core ( yeah,THAT one! ) and some KINGSTON value memory and tried to boot my rig. Here is my problem now:this board is working those 4 red diagnostic LEDS start 4,3,2 next only one left so no "4 LEDs of death" syndrome for me and the onboard speaker beeps ONCE which I know is always a good thing but I cannot enter BIOS to setup as I need Del key on my PS2 keyboard is NOT working as it should I press the key and the result is 0 nada nothing , first I see the boot logo from DFI after that I see this error message "CMOS checksum error - defaults loaded , press F1 to continue or Del to enter setup" and when I press Del I get nothig and when I press F1 key sometimes I see this message "Verifying Pool Data and Backup CMOS OK!" and other times I see "Sil3114 SATA RAID Press Ctrl-S or F4 to enter RAID utility".One more thing to add is that I can actually use boot menu selection using Esc key to selct HDD,CD-ROM or some other option and this board actually can boot using CD/DVD I already tried UBCD rescue CD and some Linux live distros to see if it's not a problem with my FX-60 processor and I'm happy that it is working well i... Recently, using FF 2.0.0.16 on my Vista Ultimate 32 bit computer, I notices popup ads from c5.zedo.com, when I visited a web page. The pop ups appeared if I left OR right clicked on a text area. The mouse pointer remained a pointer; had not changed to hand with extended index finger.

I verified that FF's popup blocker is / was on. I removed all exceptions & restarted the PC. Same problem. I viewed the page source, searched for zedo and found it related to java script.

I turned off Java, rebooted & the problem went away.

This did NOT occur using IE 7.

I stopped the popups by using the modified hosts file from mvps.org. Because the .bat procedure used by the mvps author to replace the hosts file failed in the past, I copied the contents of the modified hosts from mvps.org & pasted the contents into my hosts file, rebooted & success occurred. I had re-enabled java in FF.

I hope this information is useful to anyone else who encounters the phenomenon.

Firefox's popup blocker does not block all popups, although it does its best. The best way to block ads and the rest of the popups would be to use the Firefox AdBlock Plus extension.

Also, Java is not the same thing as Javascript. They are completely different, and I'm assuming you disabled JavaScript, not Java. However, you don't want to completely disable JavaScript because almost every modern website uses it in some way or another. AdBlock Plus should block the ads, but you can also use NoScript to block all JavaScript on a per-site basis.

I have a HP Deskjet 3745 I've had for a year and it keeps getting locked up on the left side and says mechanism error cradle can't move. I can print a test page but when it gets to the bottom of the page thats when it gets locked up. I try to align it but Its printing sideways like the cradle is out of alignment but its screwed in tight plus the lines are overlapping each other like theres a problem with the ink. The ink has 75% left. I sold it and took it over there one day after work so it sat in my car so I think maybe the heat inside the car may have did something. The lady I sold it to just moved and I think they may have dropped it cause theres a black scuff mark on the corner but she said she didn't. I had to give her money back so now I'm left with a broken printer.

My Windows Mail program suddenly stopped sending and receiving messages. The following error message popped up: "Account: 'Windows Mail', Server: 'pop3, Server Response: ERR An authentication mechanism MUST be entered,' Port: 110, Secure (SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800ccc90, Error Number: 0x800ccc18"

I have tried to trouble shoot settings. Everything appears to be correct per my internet provider. My operating system is Vista; I have been using Windows Mail for several years with no problem. Nothing has changed with my computer re: recent updates or new programs.

What is an "authentication mechanism" and how do I set/respond to the error issue? Any available help would be greatly appreciated! (FYI I'm not a computer techie-type so simple-minded (referring to me of course!!!) direction would be especially appreciated! Thank you!!!

A:Authentication Mechanism MUST be Entered

The problem could be with your mail provider. Wait until tomorrow, if it still does not work properly report back and we will go from there.

Hi Team,
May I know how does windows time works?
During system boot up, after BIOS transfers the ownership to windows, does windows get the time value from CMOS RTC?
After that, how does windows time tick-tock? using PCH's HPET(High Precision Event Timer) or CPU's TSC(Time Stamp Counter)?
Does any interrupt or events will cause windows time pause? such as SMI?
Any documents from windows to explain this mechanism.
If I have to debug an issue relative with windows time, any way to monitor this time during system boot up?
it is a data structure or run time register reading or something else?
Thanks,
-Tarzan

Hello,    Does anybody know what is the part number/s for the latching mechanism, whole mechanism/slider etc., that holds the lid/screen closed?    I found some other posts where they were talking about the lid/screen hooks. I'm talking about the mechanism that the hooks get retained in.   I've started to put together a T420s that someone else took it apart and when I finished I realized that I was missing the latching mechanism and I've looked online and I couldn't find anything, not even the proper name/definition for that part/s.  Thank you,Emil

Recently, the eject button on my dvd drive stopped working. I took off the faceplate and noticed the pin that would push the eject button on the drive was bent, and pushing the button on the drive still caused the drive to eject. So I'm pretty sure it's a problem with the faceplate only.

Does anyone know where I could find a new one? I have a HP dv6000 series (dv6568se)

Thanks!

Though I didn't do research on the particular model, I would assume you would have to send it in to HP for it to be replaced.

Hi Gang,

When I try to search my computer, any part of my computer, the search module seems to stall. That is, it doesn't appear to be doing anything for anywhere between 10-30 seconds. After this time the meter starts working and the word "searching" comes up on the search box.

There seems to be a long delay between the time I give the order to search, and the time the search command is actually executed.

What can I do to eliminate this delay?

I have WinXP Pro SP2

hey,
i just bought a new computer, and assembled it.
everything works great, except that whenever i unplug the computer and then plug it back, i cant turn it back on again for a while.
No lights, no response, like its not in the socket at all. only after a few minutes of being unplugged it lets me turn it on again.
It was very anooying when i assembled the system, and had to wait for a while between adding stuff.
It really pissed me off when i had a power failure in my house for a second, and couldn't use my computer for about 20 minutes later.
Is this a safety thing from enermax? if it is, is there a way i can get around it? or atleast minimize the wait time?
my system, if u think that it might be somthing else:
Processor: Intel core 2 duo E6400
Motherboard: Asus P5B
Mem: DDR2 512Mb 533MHz CL2 Kingston
Graphics: Sapphire Radeon X1950PRO 256MB PCIe
PSU: Enermax Noisetaker 420W

thanx ahead for any help.

A:Enermax annoying safety mechanism?

I've got the 475W Noisetaker and a 480W Noisetaker II, never had this problem with either of them. I did static discharge on the case of the comp that had the Noisetaker in it once and it wouldn't power on for a few minutes, but I've never had a problem like you are discribing.

I may be off on those wattages, I can't be arsed to check for sure right now. But I'm not off by more than 15, and its not even relavent to your case.

Good morning.

I'm a third year university student and for one of my assignments, I am to write a research report based on the question 'Are Passwords an Effective Security Mechanism'. I have focused the research on biometric and traditional (alphanumeric combination) passwords. Also, I am required to obtain some primary research which can be argued against my secondary research to form some sort of conclusion, and to do this, I have decided that a questionnaire is the perfect solution.

I would appreciate it if some of you would take the opportunity to complete my questionnaire as you will be helping me out a lot. It will take no more than 2 minutes to complete. Also, I would be interested in hearing your thoughts and opinions on biometric and traditional passwords, regarding their security.

The survey can be found here - https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/VMS7XPD

I apologise if this is in the wrong section or breaks a rule. I have checked the rules out and I believe it doesn't break the advertising rule, but it might to you guys.

Thanks in advance.

A:Are Passwords an Effective Security Mechanism

The user is the first and last line of defense. Strong passwords can be effective security measure. Unfortunately, it has been proven time and again that the user is a more substantial factor (weakest link) in security than the architecture of the operating system or installed protection software. Security is all about layers, and not depending on any one technology or approach to detect or save you from the latest threats. The most important layer in that security defense? You! Most threats succeed because they take advantage of human weaknesses (laziness, apathy, ignorance, etc.), and less because of their sophistication.Krebs on SecurityThese were the worst passwords of 2015, and they're only getting worseThis List Of 2014s Worst Passwords, Including 123456, Is EmbarrassingIts 2014 And Our Passwords Arent Getting BetterThe 25 Worst Passwords of 2013

Is there any built in mechanism in Windows 7 during the fresh installation that all files are copied successfully from DVD to hard drive? or as long as Windows 7 completes the installation no matter how fast/slow it takes, one can assumed that all files are copied successfully?

Mine took about 25 mins, but during the installation lots of long pauses while reading/copying files from my 4X DVR+RW to hard drive as if Windows couldn't find files or constantly waiting from the rewritable 4X DVR+RW), but it eventually competed the installation in 25 mins none the less without giving out any error messages.

Thanks.

Hey guys, in a recent form, my mobo just generally freaked out on me, so i'm buying a new one:unch: . My memory that i have is CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin, and i've read reviews that this mobo doesn't react to that memory very well. I started looking at the ASUS A8N-SLI Premium, but people have said to have problems with that board too with Corsair memory. Does anyone have any experience with these two boards and the Corsair ValueSelect memory?? Thanks!

So I built a computer, and I got the DFi Lanparty with the SLi and all that. Werid thing is it comes with 2 Ethernet plugs. I can get internet from either one, but there must be a reason they put 2 plugs in there. So i thought it was for that whole "lanparty" thing. so i hooked another computer to the other plug, and it lights up, the other computer says it gets a connection, but it isn't strong enough to actually get on the internet. So, anyone have this board or know what it's there for?

A:DFi Lanparty

Most new High end boards(like that one) are coming standard with Dual ethernet. I think you got it right with the reason for being LAN parties.

How is the AM2 DFI LanParty aside from it's looks? (Found here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813136014)

... Anyone have it or know it well? How is it? Stable? Good OCing?

Also, it seems to need an 8-pin CPU plug... What version of ATX is that? My PSU is only 2.01 ATX, and thus doesn't have the 8-pin plug for the CPU . Any way to make it work? The PSU is only a few months old and is VERY good for my needs (480W), and is 100% stable. I don't want to replace it!

A:nf4 lanparty ultra-D

This forum is intended for issues related to systems running Windows 7. I see that you're on XP. (I also see that you like run-on sentences.)

That said, I don't know what to suggest. The Lanparty UT NF4 Ultra-D is a fairly old (2005) Socket 939 board. I think eBay may be where you'd have to go for a replacement motherboard, or a replacement BIOS chip. (Both the board and the chip are listed on eBay.)

If you'd like to try just updating the BIOS, the latest version is 406, from April of 2006:

DFI LANParty:The Best OC Platform! Overclock, Motherboard, Intel, AMD

I suggest using a floppy-based version, as it's safer than flashing from Windows.

Good luck.

just a quick question. Ive been looking at mobos and i can't decide between the DFI lanparty and the A8N-sli premium. I know they both have some great features but i mainly just want some oppinions from those of you who have or have used either of these. thank you, mobo going to be paired with a x2 4200+, 2 gig xms, 7900 GT, and a 74G raptor if that changes anything.

A:A8N premiun or DFI Lanparty?

You're not using SLi so don't get an SLi motherboard. Get an Asus A8N-E or a DFI LANPARTY motherboard without SLi. With an X2 and 7900GT, I recommend the Asus A8N-E. If you had an Opteron, I'd go for the DFI. Best of luck!

I built a system using a DFI Lanparty board using IDE raid 0, which the board was made for (not ATA), with W2k, SP4. I used 2 160g drives to do this, used good components, lots of memory, etc. It worked fine for quite awhile, until I added an MT 4 sound card for the purpose of in house music recording and editing (I'm also a part time musician). Almost immediately, it started to hang, so I decided to uninstall the card and software. Did that, then when I rebooted the system, at the last stage of the boot process, just when you think everythng is cool, I get a blue screen registry error message. I am no programmer, but I do know a lot of basic recovery methods, and none of them worked. My main question is this- is there bootable software available on CD that I can use to address this registry error issue, or is there another approach? Keep in mind that I can get to a command prompt screen that allows me to see that all the files are still there with a directory command, yet cannot boot in safe mode or any other F8 option, even when I use the W2k CD. I still get the blue screen error message which passes very quickly, something like ...security.ini..., and then the system reboots repeatedly, ad infinitum, like it is in a loop, to the same results every time, until I shut off the power. If you have any input, please let me know at '[email protected]'

I'm trying to overclock an AMD64 3200+ on the DFI LanParty UT nF4 SLI-D mobo. I can't figure out how to up the CPU voltage. Anyone know how? I have it clocked to 2.25GHz on 1.376v. It's Genie BIOS and the vcore is not accessible. Is there a multiplier of some sort?

A:overclock on DFI LanParty UT nF4 SLI-D

it's not a multiplier. the BIOS on the lanparty boards list the VCORE as "VID" (voltage ID)

the setting that says CPU VID control is the standard incremental voltage adjustment. the setting that says CPU VID special control is a percentage based voltage adjustment beyond the incremental adjustement.

I have not used that board, but a quick google search answered that question pretty easily.

good luck

Is This normal, or is there something wrong?

Ok, so I have been doing some reading throughout multiple sources and only found a few similarities to my issue. RAM test fine during stress tests, (As did mine, 3 passes through full boot MEMTest) but crash while gaming or random restarts just occur. From I reading I concluded that it is possible that the ram setup in the bios my not work for the speed of ram (PC 4200 etc) OR the RAM may be overheating, I have no clue which is more likely, my friend and I put this together, but he is more the hardware guy, I am more of programmer -.- Either way, I get Error 132 Crashes in World of Warcraft, and varios other error that point to RAM. Please anyone, this issue seems to be coming to a conclusion, I have been on sever time consuming 'wild goose chases' so to speak and tweaked several different options/ replaced cabling in the PC, to no avail.

Thanks

I'd love to build this, but I already have more computers than I know what to do with, but this may be a nice template for someone else wanting a good lanparty type system.

Here're the specs.
Xqpack2 micro atx shoebox case
Corsair 520w PSU
Asus P5K-VM G33 MATX (can be oc'ed)
Intel C2D E6320 4M cache
Zalman 7700CU CPU Cooler
EVGA 8800GTS 320MB
G.Skill 4GB DDR2 800 2 x 2GB
WD 750GB SATA 3.0Gbps 16M cache HD
LG 18X SATA DVD-RW
Windows Xp/Vista 64bit(not on list)

It'd be around $1450 with windows and shipping.

Yeah, I'm just bored, so I went "window shopping."

Nice build. But it's better to get 4x1GB than 2x2GB... the 1GB sticks are more reliable, overclock better, and you don't lose as much memory if one fails.

Anyone have this mobo? When I enable the 2nd LAN port (nVidia) my system seems to get problems like freezing and whatnot. Ever since I disabled the second port, things are running smooth as ever.

Anyone figure out a way to enable the LAN port without the problems?

A:DFI LANPARTY NFII Ultra (rev a)

i dont own your motherboard but mine is similar in design and when i enabled the second lan port after windows has been installed i got serious stability problems - apartently this is an nforce2 chipset thing so its NOT a fault motherboard (we hope) i happens to all us lot with NF2 motherboards.
the only solution (i know of) is to format ur HDD, enable the lan port and reinstall windows - apartently that solves it
hope that helps

Just built a new system with the above mobo as a base. Throughout the set up I encountered a couple times when I would plug the power supply back in, turn the power on (on the power supply, which is a seasonic 600w) and then the power LED would start flashing and continue. When this happened the mobo would not power up. I figured I had a loose connection, so I Pulled everything out and started a slow systematic build and checking to see if a particular piece was causing the problem. Including reseting the cmos.

After working my way through everything, it booted up and ran great! So I installed and updated everything, played a little BF2 and everything seemed fine.

The next day I was online for a bit in the am, shutdown for a couple hours and then tried to boot again. This time however, the LED started flashing again and it wasn't booting. Again pulled it all apart and rebuilt, it didn't restart this time though (can't remember if I reset the cmos this time)

I can't seem to find anything in the manual or online that tells me what might be causing this. Any ideas or help would be great. I can give all the specs if anyone needs that.

Thanks

A:Mobo Unresponsive - DFI Lanparty UT nF4 SLI-DR

Hey there,

Thanks for that suggestion, unfortunately none of those led's are lighting at all (I believe they only lit when I was actually able to turn the power on the board on).

It is the stand-by power led that is flashing. As soon as the power supply is turned on this light starts flashing and nothing else will do anything else. The times the system worked correctly, this led was constantly lit and steady.

thanks

Hello everyone! I was looking at mobos' and i came across the DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D and the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum mobos. The lanparty mobo seemed more attractive, where as it seems to be more of a "gamers" board. I have never built with these two brands, MSI and DFI, so i was woundering which mobo would be the best for gamers. The lanparty mobo has 2 PCI-express slots, not SLI, and it cost about 10 bucks more. I dont really need the extra pci-e slot, expecially if its not sli. I also have herd many talking about the lanparty board being difficult to install and it being very picky about the memory. As for the MSI board, most of everyone has said it to be a breeze to install. I would rather get the MSI board, which is less expensive, and it being very easly to build with, rather than getting the lanparty board, having it to be more expensive and difficult to install, but yet is basicly the same as the MSI board. Perhaps some help from people who have these boards would be helpfull. Any help will be welcomed. Thanks

I recently installed the dfi lanparty ut nf3 250 gb (all other components are new). I attempted to test the reset button by reseting the system (from the desktop). After pressing the reset button on my case for a second or two then releasing it, the system appears to reset - for example, the monitor resets, the hard drive resets (makes that noise you hear during a cold start) but following the hard drive reset, nothing happens. There is no system beep you commonly hear during a cold start. The monitor is black and the hard drive continues to make that reset sound. Its almost as if the motherboard doesn't reset.

I checked the reset plug that attaches from the case to the mobo and it appears to be attached firmly. Everything else works fine but this.

Can you help?

I have just built my very first computer and installed windows 7 on it. I have run into a slight problem, the driver setup they sent me isn't compatible with Windows 7. When i put in the CD a setup message tells me, "The main board is not supported with this operating system. The application will be terminated." I have tried running this program in the Windows 7 compatibility mode but none of the Vista or XP options seem to work. To top it all off the DFI website is absolutely horrible. The CD has the chipset, audio, network, RAID, software and utility drivers on it. Where can i find these drivers compatible with Windows 7 64 bit?

How many HDD do you have? If you have more than one, make sure that the one you are installing windows on is the MASTER disc and the other one(s) are SLAVE discs. You'll have to add/remove jumpers to make one the MASTER disc.

Thats about all I can help you with. I hope it helps.

Dear Experts,

I have a laptop (IBM X61) with WindowsXP + SP2. I am facing some problem, while configuring static ip address. Its leasing ip address successfully if connected to a DHCP network. And also there is no problem, if configured static ip on "Alternative Configuration" tab. But if i confugure static ip instead of "obtaining automatic", sometimes its prompting for "restart", and it will become "obtaining automatic" again (regardless of restart / not) and trying to acquire ip address.

If you are facing the same problem, or having solution, please respond.

I've got a 1TB Legacy BIOS (MBR) HDD with Windows 10 installed.
I will be buying a new 250GB SSD, I want to install Windows 10 on it and use it as the main boot drive.
I'm also looking for the SSD to be GPT and not MBR.

The idea is to keep the 1TB HDD (whether MBR or GPT, doesn't matter for me for this drive, whichever is easier) with all its information intact and use it to install other random things/dump big folders like pictures onto it.
I've researched around and although I've retrieved a lot of info I can't seem to piece together how to do this at all! (without a decent degree of wiping everything on this HDD by accident)

Does the new SSD need to go into a certain physical slot? Do I have to reformat the MBR HDD? How do I make the SSD the primary boot drive? What's the best way to get the Windows 10 on it?

The main question is how do I go about this from start to end?

This has been happening for a while and I really hope somebody here can help me. I use an Acer laptop (Aspire 3690) with Windows XP. Whenever I "change" anything in the desktop or taskbar (meaning move an icon, change the quick launch width or the shortcuts on it), it goes away at the next system restart. This got so annoying I actually downloaded a quicklaunch bar replacement program (freelauchbar, I think), but it doesn't help since, when I restart the system, the old bar is back, since it doesn't retain the settings.

Can somebody please help me solve this issue? It's starting to get ridiculous.

Thanks in advance.

I've just installed an Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe system, and having some issues. I have four SATA drives and a SATA DVD drive attached.

My boot drive is installed in SATA1.

For some reason, it sticks SATA1 as the last item in the HD order listing, so that when I boot, I get a failure message. Go into BIOS, stick SATA1 as the first HD, save and reboot, and all is well... until the next reboot.

Why is the BIOS not retaining the HD order?

A:Removing win 2000; retaining XP

If you actually did an overlay installation of XP, the only solution is to reinstall XP clean.

When installing XP clean you would delete the C partition, then create a new C partition to clean install XP on, this is all done by booting from the XP CD.

I would really appreciate some advice with this. I purchased a laptop with vista pre installed, there is a product code sticker on the laptop itself. I am a XP fan and would like to install it. I would however like to retain an option of reverting back to vista. What is the best option for this?

1. If I could get hold of the Vista installation disk could I use the product code from the 'sticker'?
2. Could i use norton ghost to clone the operating system already set-up on the system?

A:Retaining Old Operating System.

Make and model of the computer?
Does it have the option to make recovery disks?
Does it have a recovery partition?

Yes, you can use a disk cloning program to do this - but I'd make sure that you have a set of recovery disks "just in case".

A:Retaining folder preferences

Hi Phil,

Unfortunately, there's no easy way to do this in Vista (well, there is, but it doesn't always "stick" - it tends to revert to the template defaults or change as you change other folders no matter what you do (though I seem be generally successful for the most part - it seems to typically work most of the time)). There's no "trick" or registry modification or anything like that I'm aware of that will solve this when it happens. It's a very common complaint.

Go to go Start / Control Panel/ Folder Options / View Tab and make sure the box Remember each folder's view settings is set. That's about all you can do on a folder-by-folder basis and generally works for me (as far as the View only itself goes). The rest can only be altered by changing the templates - and that pretty much does it for all folders of that type - not just the individual ones.

Here's some information I've put together on changing folders that may be of some help (though the above, as limited as it is, seems to be the best and only option on a folder-by-folder basis).

Here's how to change the default template for a folder: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/70819-windows-explorer-folder-view-settings.html. Default behavior is to select the template based on the first type of file placed in the folder (it has to choose something). Vista sets the Explorer window view settings and folder type template according to what folder types are in the window. This will show you how to r... Read more

Something screwy is going on with my system. I installed Registry First Aid Agent and put in my registration code and it runs fine, however when i shut down my computer I have to reenter the registration code every time. I thought it was a flaw with the software but now I have installed two other programs and have exactly the same problem.
To add to this, I have found that no matter how I set my history settings in Explorer it will only retain Todays history.
I also tried changing my sound default settings via the control panel. The changes take effect but when I shut my computer down (the right way) and turn it back on the old settings were back.

I've been approached by a member of our admin staff who is trying to produce our monthly newsletter. She is using Publisher 2003 (on an XP client to win 2003 server).

Her problem is that every time she closes the letter (after saving obviously) and opens it later, the content is still there, but the formatting is all wrong, i.e. the images have become overlapped with text, and the formatting of the text has changed.

She came to me with this problem last month, and I looked for answers but couldn't find any by googling and hoped it was just a transition problem from office 2000 which she used previously. She redid the letter and saved it, but it still seems to have this problem.

Any ideas?

Hi folks, new member here
Been using XP happily for years; never wanted to 'upgrade', many old software applications installed
Recently disaster struck when the Mainboard (or CPU) died
No problem, I thought, computer could do with a bit of a speed up anyway
After some web searching discovered that my current cpu/mainboard combo is no longer available anyway (understandable), so looked into new kit. Found the mainboard that looked right regards to number of ports, correct DIMM type, USB 3, etc..
This is an MSI board with FM2 socket, so picked a modern CPU to go in it (AMD)
When the gear arrived in the post, I decided to check the mainboard CD to see what chipset drivers were supplied, etc, etc, but discovered that the support was for Windows 7 and upwards - no XP!
This started alarm bells ringing and after more web searching it seems that my new CPU (AMD A6 7400K) doesn't support XP either!
I guess my point is that if your old computer needs fixing or even replacing, the new stuff won't ALLOW you to keep Windows XP. Not only are Microsoft pushing you out (and now Google Chrome) but mainboard and CPU manufacturers seem to be doing the same thing by not providing XP drivers for their hardware.
You might even need to buy new software applications as well!

Any body got any similar experiences?

I am currently talking to my component vendor to see if there is any older kit still available that I can swap with them.
Not happy

A:Upgrading hardware, retaining xp

It's completely normal and inevitable. Manufacturers can't justify the time, effort and cost of developing and testing drivers for superseded operating systems. As MS-DOS, Windows 3.1 and 9.x fell off the radar, the same thing is occurring with XP.

In the evening I checked the charging level again (of the unused laptop). I repeated this for 3 different days and each day the charging level stood at 87%, 90% and 88%. I wonder if there is any issue with my laptop/battery as for apparantly nothing it's discharging. I have another HP laptop pavilion 15-e015tx and I do not observe such discharging behaviour with it. Can HP experts/expert users shade some light on this? Has anybody experienced same thing with his/her HP laptop? Thanks,Atul.

Earlier this evening I had about 6 windows open all checked with "SHOW SIDE BY SIDE." Since then, I've been unable to get many of my windows to open back to the maximized view. I clicked on that option again thinking it would no longer show things side by side.

Now windows open in the top part of the monitor screen in the top 1/4 horizontally. Hope that makes sense. When I had XP, I was able to resize the screen manually, hold the control key down, and left click on the red X. When reopening, the screens would be maximized.

How can I get my screens back to opening full screen mode rather than in the top 1/4 and only seeing about 3 inches downward? I would prefer not to have to maximize each and every screen.

This was not an issue until I had the 6 windows side by side this evening. I've used the side by side option before but only for 2 windows to be horizontallly side by side, not 6. Did it confuse the pc (LOL)?

Thanks for any help,

I am working with one of our clients that our application is (which is a click to run) on an image that they created. We were experiencing some issues error performing certain functions on the machine. The UAC slider was at the very top, we changed the
UAC setting to the second from the bottom and restarted and the application started performing as designed. The problem is that now when we changed it back to the top the application is still performing as designed. If UAC settings is isolated as the problem
why wouldnt we be experiencing the issue again with the UAC slider at the top. I am a help desk technician with limited knowledge security policies and procedures. I was wondering if someone could shed some light on why this occuring and what the key differences

When browsing folders, I prefer to see large icons. I manually change the settings to see folders the way I prefer, but everytime I try to view folders, I once again see folders displayed in the same old "list" format. As far as I know, I've changed internal settings to remember folder settings, but as I write, the thought occurs to me that maybe I've caused the OS to remember "list" rather than what I desire. If you have experience with this issue, I'd appreciate your insight. I am using Vista if that matters.

I have installed a new harddrive put a booyable version of XP pro on it and then was going to do a user account transfer from the previous harddrive, then the problems started.

My original harddrive ( also has XP pro on it) started to blue screen. In addition a chkdsk on it failked done to unrecoverable errors.

Now I really do not want to reformat the original drive and loose my old emails etc, how can I proceed.

What I would like to do is reinstall XP on it but have that installation pick up and allow access to the old user accounts, and do all of this without loosing pers data files, is it possible??????

Other solutions to just getting access to the old drive would be nice.
Many thanks in advance, polspe.

first verify that a correct jumper is set (master/slave), second try booting the old one and if it boots successfully and that the new HD that is set as slave is detected, you can now copy your files....

I have the following COUNTIF that is working just how I want it to. Problems come when trying to copy the formula on down. The formula is:

=COUNTIF('Sheet1'!$B1:$B1048576,"=A1")

When I try to copy the formula down the column, I get this:

=COUNTIF('Sheet1'!#REF!,"=A1")

Two issues here that I put in bold. First, I'd like to retain the cells referenced on Sheet1 when copying and second, I'd like the cell A1 to change to A2, A3, and so on.

Any help is appreciated.

A:Copy COUNTIF while retaining reference

Welcome to the forum

If you want your range to be the whole of column B then you can type B:B (or $B:$B if you want it to be fixed). For your criteria, you currently have "=A1" but if you change it to simply A1 then when you drag the formula down the column it will change to A2, A3 etc.

So your formula will look like this:

=COUNTIF(Sheet1!B:B,A1)

Hi , I'm using windows XP and often i'm looking for files or copying things using 'my computer' icon. Each time i go into the 'my computer' thing to copy or look at files, i get the same horizontal layout (showing drives and files horozontal across the screen)
Each time i must click on view...>. explorer bar ..> folders and then i get the list of folders that make sense to me showing them vertically and with a + sign denoting that they have subfolders. Even though i have 'retain settings' when returning ticked in the 'tools' menu. I keep losing the 'folder' setting i entered last time i ventured into 'my computer'
It might'n sound much... but ive been doing this resetting this for zoncs.

Something I like and can't seem to get Win 7 to do for me.....

I open a window for my computer, size it and set it at the upper left of my screen. I open folders in new windows; i.e. open the D: Drive and position it next to the window I opened for my computer. Close both. When I open my computer again it is now in the position where I opened the D: Drive.

How do I get specific windows to retain the size and position I set each time I open them rather then simply pick up the size and position of the last window I opened?

Sorry for this sophomoric question; I'll probably kick myself when I know the answer.

Sorry, but all Windows Explorer windows in Windows 7 share the same position and size as the last one that was closed. They do not have individual folder view settings for these two items.

My email client, desktop program PostBox (for Win) has been slowed since I installed BD TS2016 (I'm quite sure this is the reason as it was very fast before, and slowed immediately after...)

I also run WebRoot AV (which does not scan email as per their documentation) and HitmanAlertPro (which could also be affecting my email client, but I uninstalled it to test this somewhat small chance given its just an anti-exploit, and it doesn't seem to have affected it, the client is still slow).

1. I would LIKE BD to scan my email as of course having AV w/o scanning email could in many ways be pointless given email can be a deadly vector for heavy malware.

2. But I don't want my client to be slow. It's not horrible, and I suppose I could tolerate it (basically deleting messages, loading new messages, and the program responsiveness overall, is a bit sluggish compared with its normal instantaneous response)

3. Is there a way to configure email scanning differently? Or should the program NOT be slowing my client noticeably in general, and is this behavior indicative of something being wrong?

I'm sure BD users will be able to comment on whether it slows their email or not given they use a desktop client like Outlook, Postbox, Thunderbird, etc.

Thanks!

A:BitDefender Email Scanning Mechanism? Performance Issues w/ email Client

I have three computers in a network and want to know how, or, if I can retain all files on a machine I want to disconnect from the network.

A:Retaining files when disconnecting computer from a network

Gygrunt, Welcome to the windows 7 forum.

Can it be assumed that the machine is presently connected to a domain? And are you an administrator on the domain?
if not, then it many cases it won't allow you to unjoin from the domain.

Other than that, when you say retain all files, do you mean data files for a userid on the local machine?

Some people just copy all the my documents and such to an external drive before unjoining from the domain and making sure
that you have an administrator account on the local machine or you might end up having to do a complete install of the version
of windows that the machine requires.

Hello all...

I have a D865PERL mobo and a P4 3.0E CPU (socket 478). I am looking to replace the stock heatsink/fan but I need to know if the *retaining bracket* for the heatsink is removable/replaceable *without* removing the mobo. I am looking to install a *Thermalright XP-90* along with a *Panaflo 92mm Fan High Speed (FBA09A12H-A)* that should work with the current retaining bracket. I figure if the retaining bracket is replaceable *without* removing the mobo, I will go ahead and order a metal version of the retaining bracket to replace the current plastic one. But if it's not replaceable without removing the mobo I will have to pass because I am not experienced enough to be messing with removing a mobo.

Thanks in advance for any help/insight anyone can offer. BTW, my system was built by a friend but I am unable to contact him at the moment. And researching this online and at Intel's web site etc., has been unsuccessful.

A:Heatsink retaining bracket removal/replacement

hi mdexter2,

I went on Intel's website to find some pics of that motherboard. they have a nice page on the D865PERL that lets you view the board from all angles. going by the pics i saw, you should be able to remove the bracket without removing the motherboard. it appears that it uses plastic pins & anchors to hold the bracket to the motherboard. (make sure there are no screws holding it as well)

1. the little white pins (they look like white circles from above) in each corner will need to be pulled (or pried) out.

2. once you have all four white pins removed, you can pull the bracket right off the motherboard. it will take a small amount of force to compress the anchors as you pull up on the bracket.

that's it!

if it the bracket uses another retention method that requires the removal of the motherboard, don't worry it's very simple. the only tool you need is a phillips screwdriver. if you're worried about all the wires... don't be. they only fit where they're supposed to go. if you're still worried, then take a picture before you unplug anything so you'll have an idea of where each wire goes.

hope this helps, cheers

I am trying to accomplish the following:
I am buying 15 identical (Lenovo) PC's with a separate valid Windows 7 OEM license on each one (not a VLK). I want to set up one computer with all the software I need and remove all the bloatware (perhaps by doing a clean install), and then I want to clone
that drive onto the remaining 14 PC's.
My question is, how do I re-apply the individual license to each cloned drive, so that I don't have multiple computers with the same license and hence violating Microsoft's EULA?
And what would be the best tool to do the cloning (I haven't done this before)?
All help and advice is appreciated!

Hello,

I am running Vista on a Gateway T-1628 Laptop. Lately, it has really slowed down due to bad internet surfing, and I wish to 'wipe' the laptop clean. However, I paid $120 when I bought it for Microsoft Office. I want to keep the program. So my question is in two parts:

1. How do I 'wipe' my computer down? Get rid of everything- I have backed up my essential files.
2. How do I 'wipe it down while retaining MS Office?

Thank you for the help,

Dave

A:[SOLVED] Clean Slate while retaining MS Office

and welcome to the Forum

You can wipe the drive using the Vista ( pardon the language ) installation disc. You might want to consider upgradeing to Windows 7 . huge improvement over Vista

You cannot both wipe the drive and retain Office . . but you can capture the installation key usng Belarc Advisor and reinstall it after installing the Operating System. Do you still have the Office installation disc?

This is a good guide to reinstalling XP . . you might want to print it for reference during the install.

A:Anyway to reboot retaining windows updated files?

I think you mean to load an image of a previous 'clean' install onto your current PC. If this is the case, then no, updating to the latest updates is not possible during imaging and must be done after imaging. It also depends on the method, for example: are you copying an image with a tool such as Norton Ghost etc...

IE, Say I print Document "A" 50 times, the next document (without exiting Word completly and then re-opening) i open and i go to print, it will retain 50 copies as well and i do not want that. I have upgraded the print drivers for my default printer and still no luck. I've done a print to file and viewed the file and it definitely says that it is 50. So, is this a word problem or is it still related to my print driver? Any help would be great. thank you.

A:Retaining Links in MS Internet Explorer Browser

If there is one thing that Windows likes to do, it is alphabetize everything! There is no foolproof method for having items in an unsorted (as far as Windows is concerned) order. Locking the toolbar(s) is for the toolbars, not the content.

You can only continue to manually position them to your liking. Same with Favorites and Start Menu Programs.

G'Day Guys,
I'm wanting to automate a small spreadsheet I have, to put in a certain monetary value in a cell at the start of the month.

I made up a conditional formula and was able to get it to work, but of course, as soon as the next day ticks over, the formula is no longer valid, and the cell reverts to being empty.

Is there a fairly simple way to put something in place, so that once the condition is met, the value is retained?

My formula might not be ideal, and I'm happy to receive info on a better way to do this.

The conditional formula is: IF(A2=(TODAY()),A3,"") where A2 contains my trigger date, and A3 contains the Dollar value that I want to retain, once the formula gets a true condition.

Hope you can spare some time to offer advice.

Cheers Ron

I had to reinstall Window's Internet Explorer 7 yesterday. I had saved several shortcuts to favorite sites. When I logged on to the site, it would change the desktop icon to it's logo. For example, Pandora would change to "P" and Google would change to "G". The icon for local gas prices was a red gas can.

Since the reinstallation, many of those shortcut icons have defaulted to a sheet of paper with an "e" on it which is one of the standard Windows XP icons.
