That's normal behavior for a HD that already has XP installed on it (blue screen). As far as the NTLDR message is your bios set to boot from the cd drive?

On my computer, for about a little bit over a week now, I've been getting the blue screen that automatically restarts the computer. The blue screen text goes by so fast I can't even read it. I found out online that it was the SmitFraud, so I checked out the guide and downloaded the SmitFraudFix.exe. When I ran it in safe mode, it started working, but then it disappeared and all of my icons and everything on safe mode disappeared. The safe mode screen became a black screen with the words safe mode in the four corners, and I think there was the computer type or something on the top center of the screen. I couldn't run the fix properly in safe mode because after I tried running the fix, safe mode is not useable anymore.
What I tried to do was let my malwarebytes and my anti virus try to detect it, but they couldn't find it. I was thinking of system restoring my computer back 2 weeks, but I also couldn't find the restore points( as there weren't any). What can I do to get rid of the problem? It's really annoying.

Hi there

Before we start I need you to provide me some pieces of information:

1. Which is the version of your Operation System?

2. Do you have the installation CD of the Operating System?

3. Is Normal Mode completely inaccessible?

4. Do you have a clean computer on which you can download tools in order to be able to transfer them to the infected computer?

Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable. The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. I am currently having a problem with my computer going into sleep mode. Whenever it enters sleep mode, it goes to a blue screen of death screen that shows errors. I sometimes notice that it goes to a windows xp loading screen before and after the error. I am able to press esc key and return to to my desktop. This has been happening for the past few days. Also, I had a problem with my wallpaper being changed into a plain blue screen, but that has stopped. These problems started happening after I was attacked by the XP Antivirus 2008.

Hey there, I've had a pretty persistent problem for a bit now, where my computer will randomly, usually with no relation to the task being performed that I can tell (as in there's nothing I can do to consistently cause it), go Blue Screen of Death on me. I've attached my dump files and system report as the thread rules say you ought to, and would be appreciative if anyone were willing and able to help me out here. Thanks for your time.

My system specs, as per the thread rules, are as follows:

Windows 7 Premium, 64bit
This is the OEM, the original operating system that came with my laptop.
And I've had my laptop (an Asus, G73J series) for about 8 - 9 months now, I have not reinstalled the OS in that time.

looks like you have been crashing pretty regularly.

What I am seeing is the pctools internet security app driver is crashing your internet and then immediately your computer.
I suggest removing pc tools and just switching over to MSE

The asus autoupdate tool may be involved somewhere here, hard to tell but it seems to be sticking also as the crashes are occurring.

A Blue Screen of Death indicates a serious hardware or software problem. Go to System Properties -> Advanced-> Startup and Recovory Setting.

Uncheck Auto restart, and select Small memory dump and apply the settings. When a bsod happens, zip at least 4 minidumps from C:\Windows\Minidump, and post 'em here.

At my workplace we have recently upgraded seavel computers with a second ram stick. I had problems with this machine since then. It is a dell dimension 1100 with two sockets for ram, one of which contained a 256mb stick. I got the dell approved 1gb stick, but to install it I had to switch the orginal stick into the spare slot and place the new ram in the first slot, as the computer would not start correctly anyother way (I tried several combeinations before finding this one). I did not have this issue with 2 other identical machines.

Since then, I've been getting blue screens of death seemingly at random. It gives one of 4 or 5 error messages and has to be restarted. It can do this several times a day or work normally for weeks. It also seems to favor a couple of error messages over the others.

I will post more errors as I'm able to collect them.

My first thought is that you have a bad stick of RAM. Try this:

Remove the 256MB stick and run with just the 1GB and see what happens.
If your problems continue, put the 256MB back and remove the 1GB and check the system out. If all is well, then you have identified the culprit and will need to replace the 1GB stick.

have recently started getting the Blue Screen Of Death.
Mainly it happens when I have gone on a website such as YouTube.
Occasionally it happens at other times.

First the computer freezes. Then the message comes up. (It's not on long enough to read all the message or codes.

The message starts something like:
A thread has been excited or terminated and your computer will be shut down to prevent further damage etc. etc.
It ends with: Beginning of physical memory dump.

I have my firewall, antivirus and anti-spyware all enabled.
I have also scanned with Spybot and nothing is ever found.

I am using Windows XP Media Edition

I then have to re-boot and then everything is OK but I also have to leave the computer idle for a few minutes until the hard disk light stops.

Can anyone please advise?

I sometimes get BSODS with my computer when I leave it on for a long time and the laptop is idle like when I go to sleep. Using BlueScreenViewer I found out that the BSOD is caused by two drivers. Atikmdag.sys and ntoskrnl.exe

Im using a Dell Studio 1458 with the specs
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
Intel(R) Core(Tm) i7 Cpu Q740
ATI Radeon Mobility HD 5450

COuld anyone provide me assisstance?

A:Blue Screen of Death ATI Problem?

Just to confirm your apparent thought it does seem to be the ati driver kernel crashing.
ntoskrnl.exe is just a general crash message you get it from all sorts of things. Apparently in this case your ati driver.

The drivers they have listed on dell's site don't seem to have ever been updated. Sadly with the mobility versions of graphics cards you can't be sure if you can use the one released by ati or not, you just have to try.'s also possible the digital tuner is causing issues with the ati card.

First thing I would suggest is completely wiping the current ati driver off of there.
Here is a good utility for that. Guru3D - Driver Sweeper (Setup) download from

Before running that make sure you have a copy of the driver they offer here.
Drivers & Downloads
as well as the newer driver provided by amd/ati
ATI Catalyst

After using the tool to remove the currently present driver I would first try using the ATI provided one, only having the one from dell as a fall back incase it doesn't work properly.

A:How do I fix BAD_POOL_HEADER blue screen of death problem for my XP

Hello gobear and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm not an expert in BSODs so until one of the Forum experts comes along there are a couple of things you can try that are similar to what's recommended for Windows 7 computers..

Often a Bad Pool Header BSOD can be traced back to a hard drive issue. Try running Check Disk (Chkdsk).

Windows XP chkdsk - The Details

Another possibility is damaged or corrupt system files. Try running a system file checker scan. Unfortunately, it may require that you have an original installation disk available so the scan can extract clean copies of damaged or corrupt files.

scannow sfc - LEARN how to use SFC.EXE (system file checker)

Another possible fix would be a Repair Install which also requires the installation disk.

Repair Windows XP by Performing a Repair Install (Part 1 of 2)

As I recall, XP wasn't as forgiving when it came to BSODs as Windows 7 is, and fixes were very limited. And none of these suggestions will cure an issue if it's hardware related (failing hard drive, failing RAM, failing motherboard. etc.)

I did a lot of scans recently and found no viruses or spywares etc.....Just to give a list of what I use, and btw they're all up to date and the newest version as of 2009.RegCure 1.6Advanced SystemCare 3.2Avast Antivirus 2009BitDefender 2009CCleanerCombofixError Repair Professional 3.9.9Spyware BlasterUniblue SpeedUpMyPC 2009Spyware GuardWebroot SpysweeperWinUtilitiesQuicksys RegCleaner 2009Safe'n'Sec 2009SUPERAntiSpyware Professional 4.26Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.38 PROAdvanced System Protectorand so on.......seriously, I have ****loads of protection and no i don't run all fo them at the same time or on startup, but only some really important ones so no there aren't any conflicts etc.....Anyway I did the scans and found no virus, maybe one or 2 registry fixes and optimization but that's about it. My PC is totally clean and safe, it's always been like this since ages ago. My PC is up to date with everything, including drivers etc.......I use Firefox with good protection addons, e.g. addons like Adblock Plus etc.......I also use Opera, i NEVER use Internet Explorer but I did update it to IE8 and also use IE7 Pro to further protec... A:Really weird Blue Screen of Death problem........

Seems like one of the bitdefender system files is causing windows to crash, try reinstalling it see if that helps. The tcpip driver seems to be causing a crash too, are your network card drivers up to date? Also I'm not sure you need all those antivirus/anti spyware/PC Optimization programs, as they can cause software conflicts and BSODs, 1 of each is only necessary.

Only 929 mB of free RAM. I'd suggest adding more RAM if you are able (and if the system can handle it). If not, then please check your startup items to make sure nothing unnecessary is loading - and only run 1 program at a time (in order to conserve the RAM that you do have).

Please uninstall Razer Game Booster as it is known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems.

Please update your wired, wireless, and BitDefender programs - as those are the drivers most likely associated with this BSOD.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Please do not uninstall this one - only update it:

A couple of days ago, everytime I start to download something from uTorrent, within a few minutes the blue screen shows up with the error message of: driver_irql_not_less_or_equal (netio.sys)I've already clean my temp files and nothing! Please, how can I solve this problem?Edit: Moved topic from Windows 8 to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

A:Blue Screen of Death problem with uTorrent, how can I solve?

Your issue seems to be caused by mfehidk.sys which is a part of McAfee Antivirus.

fffff880`02fb3a68 fffff880`01385b30Unable to load image \SystemRoot\system32\drivers\mfehidk.sys, Win32 error 0n2
*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for mfehidk.sys

McAfee is well known to cause BSOD when torrent clients are present. In fact most third party firewalls are doing the same. This issue is known for years and they are never able to fix it.
Source :
Please uninstall McAfee Security Center from Control Panel--> Programs and Features first. After the uninstall finishes, download and run McAfee Product Removal Tool  from the below link to remove the leftover drivers completely.
Run the tool as administrator (right click --> Run as Administrator) and follow on screen instructions. Report how the system works in next reply.

Hi -

The dump confirms bugcheck 0x8e w/ 0xc0000005 NTSTATUS exception code - a memory access violation.

I see #1 problem = you are not updated with Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). Troubleshooting non-SP1 BSODs is futile.

Any particular reason SP1 non installed??

Let's see if we can determine why SP1 not installed yet. Please follow THESE instructions. Attach the resulting zip (or RAR) files to your next post.

I also took note of some old 3rd party drivers - one dated 2003.

I am having a problem coming back to my computer after a great while or just even an hour worth of time. The problem is that my computer HP a6220n goes to sleep and I when I press any button or the since my keyboard does not have a wake, It shuts off and then when I turn it back on it goes to a blue screen of death on me. I am wondering if it has anything to do with my chipset integrated graphics that is why I bought a new graphics card. If someone knows how to fix this please feel free to contribute their idea and a solution to this thread, thankyou.

A:Solved: Blue Screen of Death problem Presists

When did the problem first start? What happens if you set "sleep" to "never" in Control Panel > Power Options? Is the problem ONLY on return from sleep?

I can run a debugging utility on the dump files if you do this:

1 > create a new folder on the desktop and call it "dumpcheck" or whatever you like
2 > navigate to c:\windows\minidump and copy the last few minidump files to that folder. *this assumes 'c' is your boot drive, if it is not, subsitute accordingly
3 > close the folder and right click on it and select Send to Compressed (zipped) Folder.
4 > use the "manage attachments" in the "advanced" reply window to upload that zip file here as an attachment.
If you do not see any minidumps, be sure you are not using any cache cleaner such as CCleaner. Also run sysdm.cpl and select Advanced > Startup and Recovery. Make sure "small memory dump" is the one chosen under "write debugging information" and the location should be %systemroot%\minidump

I get a physical memory dump error in the "blue screen of death." Seemingly, the dump occurs randomly. But I was able to replicate the problem twice by running my AVG antiviral program; yet in the last scan, I encountered no problems! I don't know why I have this gut feeling that the culprit may be my USB2 driver--which upadated and reinstalled twice. All works fine for a few days or a week then bam! Suddenly I get the blue screen--and I can be writing e-mail or editing a small photo. I can't associate the bug to any particular activity. Below is the Hijackthis log. I'm hoping someone will throw some light on this pesky problem because I don't look forward to rebuilding my HDD setup.

A:Blue Screen of Death (memory dump problem)

Have you tried rolling back the driver update to see if that fixes the problem? Or try system restore to go back before the system started crashing. If that does not work i would reccomend possibly running a memory check with memtest86. That can be obtained here: click free download and download the iso image. You would burn the iso in your cd burning program for burning image files to any ordinary cdr. You should refer to your users guide for burning the image as the methoods of doing this are different in different programs. Try these suggestions and tell us how things are running.

Hi, I am, like many other people here, having crashes for no apparent reasons (with the blue screen saying : A problem has been detected ans Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer...... ***Stop: 0x0000008E (0xc0000005..... etc. not important).

I am a real noob on computers and I can't understand anything from the solutions in other threads. I would just like to know if reformating my computer would, for sure, solve that problem (I prefer not losing everything on my hard drive).

Also if possible, anyone can tell me how reformating works please?

Got a problem upon booting, my computer loads the Dell loading screen,by which pressing F2 allows you access to bios settings etc. Anyway, after this screen, I am presented with the black screen which tells me there was a problem loading windows, and gives me th option to run safe mode, last known good config or start windows normally.

No matter what option I pick, it always results in the blue screen of death. The text string under the top paragraph is UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME.

How can I solve this? If it is any help I will paste teh stop code.

The only software change I have made recently, is installing the game WarRock. Hardware wise, I have not made any changes, although I have a Samsung Firmware updater program, which updates the firmware on my DVD-RW, which opens upon startup, and cannot be closed unless through the task manager. I don't know if that has anything to do with it, in the taskbar, the firmware updater says its updating, it has been doing this for weeks and I just left it!

Thanks in advance

PS. Excuse the poor writing, I'm using a laptop!

I installed windows 7 on my imac using bootcamp today. It was working fine until i started installing things and i ran into the blue screen of death saying Memory dump. This message only shows for about 2 seconds and then restarts my computer. It randomly happens, such as internet explorer or just on my homescreen.

Thanks in advance for you help. I am not that computer savvy when it comes to driver issues and BIOS. I will understand some computer "talk" but not all so please explain in simple terms.

Well..... first thing you need to know about registry programs is that they are risky to use as you have experienced, i use glarysoft registry repair for my xp machine and it works perfectly. Registry Mechanic has been known to mess up vista based systems but really what doesnt mess up vista lol. Anyways you always have the option of reformatting your computer, that in my opinion is the easiest and that should solve the problem you were having 5 months aog. System Restore can also help just find a restore point before you were having all these problems. Lastly you can use the restore feature in registry mechanic to undo all the registry changes, i doubt this will work but it never hurts to try.

Let me know how it works out

The whole story with this laptop. I once had a problem with the black screen of death when i was able to login. there was this empty black screen and no desktop. I was able to get through the black screen of death and the desktop was working. Problem was some of my drivers or registries were messed up. Bascially my laptop was never the same after the black screen of death. so i reinstall some of my drivers like access to internet, sound, and dvd-rw to get it running. some program still don't work today like window defender
After a random window update that restarted my dell laptop. This new problem started.

I frequently get the BSOD error when I try to enter sleep mode. I followed the BSOD posting instructions thread. I believe all the relevant information is attached, and my system specs were set using SystemInfo.exe. Thanks for your time.

A:Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Problem Sleep Mode

No DMP's included.
We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

If you are overclocking STOP

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
* Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
* OK your way out.
* Reboot if changes have been made.

okay i have a major problem on my pc and time is crucial being as i have a final paper due and i was just about finished writing it when all this happened. Okay to the best i can i will try to explain what has happened, all i know is that my brother downloaded a Gamescreen capture thing to take pics and video of w/e game your playing, he got it from to my knowledge has always been a pretty upscale, legit, clean website. However he said when he went to start it he all the sudden got the BSOD and from then on it has just been a constant battle that hasnt stopped. everytime you go to let it start it makes it to the xp loading screen the flashes the BSOD and just freezes it doesnt restart it just stays there. However the BSOD has no adresss line which i though was odd. i have tried starting it in Debug mode, last known good configuration (all the modes that arent safe mode) and it freezes at the same place everytime and give the same message.

BUT..... in safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt and directory service mode and they all start without a single problem. i also can get on (in all those modes) as my normal account and the administrator (by pussing CTRL+ALT+DEL twice then logging on) and that works as well but never will it make it to the normal login screen.

i tried first by disabling just about all the services which kinda helped uninstalling alot of crap and then disabling a bunch more stuff like the cd emulators and wha... Read more

Good day to you.

I experienced identical BSoDs today, the first one happened while I was just doing my usual stuff when suddenly my laptop lagged for a few seconds and then showed me a BSoD that said STOP: 0x000000f4 (0x00000003, 0x897574E8, 0x8975765c, 0x805c77ca).
The BSoD instructed me to restart if it was the first time that this happened so I just restarted my laptop, after booting it scanned for errors. After scanning I logged on again on my account and then I resumed my work, but after a while I was confronted with the second BSoD.

Thinking that this was really serious I restarted my laptop again and then googled the stop error. The results yielded to hardware errors. And then I thought to my self "Have I installed any new hardware?" I thought long and hard but it seems to me that I have not. So what could be causing this?

One theory I have is maybe because the usb cord connecting my laptop to my hard drive enclosure is getting loose since my mouse hand occasionally bumps it thus loosening its grip on to the usb port. The two BSoDs happened while I was using my enclosure to play some music or while accessing some files in it (owned the enclosure for only just a year now).

Another is that my hard drive is failing me already (owned this laptop for more than 3 years now) since when it scans for errors it just usually scans the C partition of the drive.

Other than the two theories I have there is no more.

So what could be causing this? Any help will be sur... Read more

We have a Dell Desktop running XP that for about a year now has frequently either crashed with the "Blue Screen of Death" or just locks up and has to be forced restarted... Often it's when MS Office products are being used - such as when something goes to "save" - but not only then.

I'm hoping that you guys can help get the PC running faster and figure out the problem with the freeze ups - otherwise, we're about ready to throw this machine out the window! ha ha!

Thanks a bunch!

In need of serious help.*
To begin, I am stupid and haven't backed up any of my files so for now a windows reinstall is out of the question. (unless it's completely necessary) okay, so the problem: I was using my computer as normal. Then while on Google Chrome, it started getting slow and said "not responding" this happens all the time, to everyone so I waited and then the dreaded Blue screen of death appeared. Didn't get a look at what it said because it shut down almost immediately. After that it loaded as normal? Which is weird, I think. But got stuck after startup on the black screen of death. All I have is a cursor. Can't do ctrl+alt+del, can't load any of the safe modes. When I go on startup repair, it says "no restore points" on system restore and "could not detect a problem" on system repair or whatever it's called. There must be something to fix this?! :/ I live in hope that the whole system doesn't need to be wiped clean because as I said, I stupidly haven"t backed up my files.*

Can anyone help?? Please?

this sounds like it should be a BSOD thread, post a seperate thread in the BSOD section following the posting instructions for BSODs, make sure you include the dump files, if you don't know how to do that, it should tell you in the BSOD posting instructions.

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps :

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced startuo options, and then select safe mode.

Can anyone help me please?
A few days ago when i tried to play an audio on my computer it was making nonsense sound, like crackling or something like that (this was just when i was running any file, including movie or music and when it was supposed to have some normal voice inside the speaker).
A few days later, i had a noisy screen (not a voice noise). the screen was like in grids and the grid lines were made of white dots. This happens not only after windows boot, but from the first moment i power the system on. during boot process as well as when in windows window.
After a short time in windows the BLUE SCREEN appears and says nvlddmkm.sys not working properly. well, this is about nvidia VGA driver i guess. BUT if it's a driver problem i shouldn't have it while in boot and when windows has not yet started + what was that sound problem then? are these two problems related to each other?
I've checked the monitor, it works well with other systems, and also this chasis has the same problem when connected to other monitors.
it was a long time i hadn't opened the chases, to try to fix these problem i opened it and found it completely dusty, i thought this may have caused overheating problem and thus the motherboard damage which has led to my "ONBOARD" SOUND and also nVidia VGA defects. i checked the bios hardware check, after about 10 minutes of system turned on, it showed 38 deg. Celsius.

Hello everyone.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L450D-13X computer for the kids, and for the price it's a good laptop. Have had no issues with it until two weeks ago when the screen froze for the boys whilst playing a game and downloading a program from the net. Had to do a force shutdown and since then we have a BSoD on every boot-up. This is what we have tried:

On 'Starting Windows' we are given an option of either 'Launch Startup Repair' which ends up as BSoD or 'Start Windows Normally' which reverts back to the 'Starting Windows' option list.
Any attempt to enter 'Safe Mode' results in BSoD.
Attempting to boot an ISO of the Windows Recovery Disk on a USB key (we did highlight it and promote it to the top) results in BSoD. Borrowing a proper Window 7 installation DVD and highlighting this as an option results in BSoD.

In fact, the only option we used that threw up something different was using advanced boot options. On one of these options we got the Blue Screen of Death with the following information:

Disable Bios Memory Options such as caching/shadowing

Tech info

Stop: 0x000000ED (0xFFFFFA80023C2CDO 0xFFFFFFFFC0000185 0x0000000000000000 0x0000000000000000)

I don't mind erasing the hard drive and starting again, there's nothing on it that's critical. I'd very, very much appreciate a steer on this. Checked the web for stuff and nothing seems to assist in any other options. I am not particularly tech literate but can follow instructions.

So I force restarted my computer and it showed up the black screen of death. I can't run in safe mode, I just can boot other OS's, like Ubuntu. I can stay with ubuntu and I thought it was an os problem, so I installed ubuntu but it keeps showing up me the black screen of death. I searched for fixes and some sites said this:

Restart your PC
Logon and wait for the black screen to appear
Make sure your PC should be able to connect to the internet (black screen does not appear to affect this)
Press the CTRL, ALT and DEL keys simultaneously
When prompted, Click Start Task Manager
In Task Manager Click on the Application Tab
Next Click New Task
Now enter the command: ?C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe? ?
Note this command assumes that you are using internet explorer as your browser, if not substitute your browser path and file details for those of iexplore.exe or use the Browser option of Task manager to locate it.

Click OK and your browser should start up and begin the download process
When prompted for the download Click run, the black screen fix program will download and run to automatically fix the issue.
Now restart your PC and the black screen problem will hopefully be gone.

I tried to do this, but I can't. When I press CTRL, ALT and DEL key simultaneously, it just restarts my computer.

Can anybody help me?

Thanks in advance!

Hello all, thank you for taking some time to help me with this!

I bought a new PC from PCSpecialist 4 months ago and I have just found out I can't send it back to them for a repair because I have reseated my graphics card - it says that basically moving anything about voids my warranty. So I thought I'd crack this on my own (with your help!).

I have:

Intel Core i7 2600k 3.4GHz
Asus P8P67 (New Rev 3.0)
4Gb Kingston Hyper-X DDR3 2133Mhz
2Gb AMD Radeon HD 6950
120Gb OCZ Vertex 3 Series SSD
1Tb WD Caviar Black
600W Quiet plus Quad Rail PSU
Win 7(SP1 I think)

The problem (in summary):

Screen started showing some snowy lines near the top and the screen split into two - the right third of the screen on the left and the left two thirds on the right. I found that this was solved through right clicking on the youtube video and disallowing graphics acceleration

About a month later it started happening again now but also turned the screen black with only re-starting it getting it back. It then stopped turning on at all (still black screen) but now had a beep code of one long and three short. I read that it could be the graphics card needing to be reseated so I thought I'd try it - hence no warranty anymore. Sigh. I reseated the card easily but still found that black screen (my monitor said "No Signal Input"). So I switched it from the top (blue) PCI slot to the bottom (black) PCI slot which seemed to solve it, ...for 1 day. Then the same thing ... Read more

So I bought a computer on Ebay. Booted up it and I can't see anything. Lots of digital pixel lines. I can see some flashes and then boots into the mother board manufacture screen and then from there, it boots into the windows installation CD. I can't see what it says to read how to install windows.
I'm thinking the video card got messed up during shipment but Is there anyway I can fix this before I return it?
Sorry If I wasn't descriptive enough but here's a screenshot.

A:Problem booting up. Black screen of death?

If it's a desktop computer you can open the case to see if you can reseat the video card.
How to install a graphics card - CNET Reviews

If it's a laptop, then there's not much that can be done. Most laptops have the video card built into the motherboard.

I am using a Vista laptop, 2GB ram
I'm getting a black screen "before" boot up - so I can't even do a system restore/pc restore.

This black screen of death happens 95% of the time (I am repeatedly taking out the batteries, restarting, etc).

When the screen does not turn totally black, I did a 'automatic pc repair' - it got me to the log in screen. Then I clicked log-in and
everything turned to purple-green and the laptop crashed.

A:Huge Black Screen Of Death Problem

Are you referring to the Startup Repair listed here?: so, can you get into Safe Mode?If so, try uninstalling your video/display adapter drivers in the Control Panel -? Programs -? Uninstall Programs appletIf not, then I'd suggest downloading a free, bootable diagnostic utility from the manufacturer of your hard drive. Test the hard drive with the long/extended test to see if there's any issues.

Hi all I got this problem ever since starting to use XP 64 bit

My machine crashed about once a day (instant restart - no warning, hence the black screen of the death!) regardless of the task that was running at the time.
In the event viewer EVERY time it crashed it recorded this:
Source:System error/ Category: 102/ event: 1003
Error code 0000000000000050, parameter1 fffffed2ffffffb7, parameter2 0000000000000000, parameter3 fffff80001286068, parameter4 0000000000000007.

Also, EVERY time I got this category 102 error the event just before it was always the following:
source:Service control manager /Category: none/ Event: 7036
The Application Layer Gateway Service service entered the running state

After months of this and not be able to fix it I decided to swap the RAM over with a fresh 2Gig kit and the problem vansihed!!!!!

After about a week it all started again ( only about once per week though). I get what seems to be the exact same Category 102 error when the computer restarts, but the preceeding event Is not the same as before:

source:Service control manager /Category: none/ Event: 7036
The FLEXnet Licensing Service service entered the running state.

and just today I got a new preceeding event:

I have also gone to the Bios and tried botoing from CD with the vista disk and get EXACTLY the same result.

I have no backup boot disc and am wondering how to comlpetely format the harddrives and if i can manage that, then load vista again from scratch.

Today I booted my computer up to be promoted with a black screen, I gave it a good half an hour before forcing it to shutdown, to which when I booted it back up. Was then promoted with a blue screen about the video card not being able to lead, that happened twice.

I then booted it into safe mode, fiddled around with the drivers to see what was going on, after restarting it again, I got the same black screen, this kept on happening. I then concluded my best solution was to install XP, this worked the video card runs. So the card is not dead, but there are multiple blue lines going down the screen in 4 columns. After going into the device manager I saw that it claimed it was not installed, then I went to Google and downloaded the driver, after installing the computers goes to the same black screen that I got on windows 7.

I have no clue what the problem is, so any help would be most appreciated. Also I tried installing Linux, but after getting though then loading screen of the installer, it goes to the black screen. At the moment in am on my tablet so sorry if there are so many mistakes. I'll try and get some photos of how it looks.

PC Specs:

- Dell Dimension E520

Thank you, any help will be hugely appreciated.

A:Geforce 7300 LE - Blue screen of death - Multiple lines down screen.

Hi Sean,

I don't like to say it, but it sounds like the graphics card is dead. I had the same issue on an old 8800gts, it would work until I installed the drivers, then I would get very bad artifacts/lines down the screen.
I tried it on 2 different PC's with the same end result once the drivers were installed.

Dell xps m1430 laptop w/vista (32).

It all started with a blue screen w/scrolling text after the fated restart. The blue screen text said "if this is the first time you've seen this message..." and then comp restarted, again showing the blue screen, then restarted into windows repair mode, after repair mode tried to fix the problem comp restarted, then the screen went black / blank right after the little windows loading animation (where the bar keeps moving from left to right and there's a small windows logo).
It all happened fast, so there may have been steps I forgot, but that's the jist of it.

Now screen always goes black / blank during startup after the windows loading animation, so I can't start windows in normal mode.
I can start in safe mode if I manually force shutdown by holding the power button, so I'm not imploding with fear... ok I am.

Possible causes:
1. This occured right after installing 11 vista updates (that restart was when I saw the blue screen)

2. Also occured the restart after running a patch called "Vista TCP/IP and UAC AutoPatch 6.0" I downloaded it from softpedia, the developer was listed as defcon, and their website listed was, but the site is down(I found this out after the problem occured). The patch had lots of positive reviews, and lots of people on other sites also suggest using it to re... Read more

Just today, I turned on my computer and got the blue screen of death, so I restarted my PC. Then a black screen came up saying "Windows could not start beacuse the following file is missing or corrupt : \windows\system32\config\system."

You can attempt to repair this file by putting the winxp cd in etc...

Now when i turn on my computer there is just a black screen showing, with nothing at all on it.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks very much for your help.

It's a nasty error that requires some persistance and resourcefullness to overcome without a clean install.

If you have a Windows CD or have the recovery console installed, you might want to have a go at these directions.;EN-US;307545

Before i describe the problem i would like to make it clear that i would like to recover as much as possible. This problem occurred playing a game called Empires V2.1. It is a steam half 2-death match mod. I had problems in the past however i didn't not consider them problems the screen froze when the game changed map. However when it froze it wouldn't respond to Ctrl+Alt+Delete or Ctrl+Esc or the start menu button. I pressed the power button and restarted it that way. However this is when the problem occurs and i can't over come it. It starts with a normal dell screen and the loading bar crosses at the bottom as normal. Then it goes to a black page with a blue line across the top with white writing saying A line (programming maybe it appears and disappears rapidly). It then goes to a black screen saying something along the lines of We are sorry for the inconvenience but windows failed to start properly. It then gives you options and no matter which option I choose I still get a blue of screen of death saying the following;

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to you computer. If this is the time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this appears again, follow these steps;

I have a computer running Windows 7. Last night the computer was running fine. This morning when I turn it on, i get a black screen. To fix the problem I conducted a system restore. After it finished restoring, the computer restarts and everything worked fine. To make sure if everything was in working order, I restart it again. After the "Starting Windows" screens comes up, I get the Blue Screen of Death. I can't even read what the error says because the computer just restarts itself. I did not connect anything new to the computer. I performed a hardware diagnostics to see if it was a hardware failure but no error was found. I can't even get into safe mode. The SFC.exe will be my next step.

Hi, I've been going through some problems with windows, I'll try to be the more clear and organized I can, let's start with my config and the symptoms I'm getting:PC Config:Core2Duo E6550GA P35 DS3 (rev.2.0)2x 1GB DDR2 800Mhz Kingston (in dual channel)GeForce 7200GS 256mb (512mb with turbo cache)HD321KJ Samsung Hard DriveSamsung SH-S203B DVD driveCorsair VX450W Power SupplyOS: Windows XP Pro x64 SP2 (I upgraded to sp2 just yesterday, before that I was running sp1)Symptoms: There are three types of symptoms, the most common is the pc simply restarting, note that I've already disabled the "automatically restart" in the system properties window and it keeps happening, other is the screen freezing, and then I have to restart it, and the last and less common is the famous Blue Screen of Death, also, but for only two times, instead of the freeze or the blue screen I got an empty black screen. All these types of crashes can happen independently of what I'm doing, It has happened while burning dvds with Nero, scanning with anti-virus, browsing the net, or even while I'm asleep and only the bittorrent client is up. Though, there is one peculiarity I think should be important, there's one program, the VirtualDubMod (build 2540/release), which is used for various kinds of video manipulating jobs, that every time I'm enconding a video with it, there is a crash, and I'm convinced it's not only coincidence, cause I have tried a... "I just got through fixing this (I hope). What it did here was change the background and set the screensaver to the sysinternals bluescreen screensaver (which you may be seeing) while at the same time setting policies in the registry to disable the two aforementioned tabs in the Display properties window.

My friends computer suddenly went bonk, here is a decent description of what happened.

-The menu bar still shows
-There is a solid blue rectangle in the middle of the desktop
-Inside the blue rectangle is a windows message block with nothing written on it, blank.
-Everything behind the blue rectangle is black
-Lines of white code plague the screen
-Nothing on the desktop can be accessed

I'm not looking for fixes, but ideas of what might be going wrong is a plus I'm not sure if this is the "blue screen of death" of something else entirely. Attributed to the graphics card or the hard disk.

We recently got a new (used) computer at my office. It's an HP Pavillion a287x, running winXP.
From the get-go, we've been getting blue screen errors, but only after the computers been idle for 10+ minutes or so. When you have websites loaded, or programs running in the background, it's fine, but with programs closed and just the desktop showing, bam, screen goes black like power saver mode, and when you move the mouse, the blue screen of doooooom comes on.
I've checked things, fixed things, (Both from what I've found online, about a problem with certain versions of quicken, and what tech guys we know have said to do) and the errors have changed slightly but it's still saying that a program or file is not being found, or something to that degree. The man who sold it to us is not exactly bright, so maybe he deleted something crucial?

Any ideas? Thanks!

- Faith

I have been experiencing the following errors for weeks and still no clue of how to cure it despite of searching through all the websites and asked many computer technicans. If anyone can give me help I would be very appreaciated.

My computer will reboot itself about once every hour, giving me blue screen of death and the following error message :

I couldn't find any similar errors in website but I suspected that it might be caused by bad ram or display driver. So I installed a new 1Gb DDR Ram, used a working display card taken out from another pc, and updated my display driver. Still no luck !! I then partitioned and reformated the two hdd (each 160G), reinstalled windows XP (with SP2) but still could not cure the error.

Hi RustyBucket,  Sorry this happened to you. If it were me, there are two things I would do: 1) Try to run a full recovery from the Hard Drive. You can access the Recovery options before the PC boots to Windows. Here are instructions for this: 2) If Recovery doesn't work, I would take it back to the store where I got to see if I could get a replacement. Or I would contact HP to have them repair the PC. This option would take the time to ship it to HP though and have them send it back.

I can't boot my computer and can't get to the desktop. I keep getting a blue screen and shut down !!!

Before i continue I should add that I'm a complete beginner with this sort of thing .

It seems that i can't return to a " restore point " and I can't boot in " safemode"

I don't know how to boot from the windows 7 disc as I don't see the option when I press F8 .

I did reinstall Windows 7 from the disc when I pressed F12 ( thinking i had it sorted) but then realised it loaded onto the D drive ( I think) ... The computer started to tell me the drive is full just after i had down the re;install ?

I'm lost to be honest ...and in a lot of trouble if my computer is shagged !!!

Any ideas

Yeah hi, yesterday I set up for my pc to run a disk check for the next time it would reboot (which is today). So when I started it up, the disk check occurred. So I went to go make lunch for about 10 minutes, expecting it to have finished in that time period. It had not. So being impatient as I am, I emergency shutdown my pc, and then rebooted it.

Unfortunately, I got to the blue screen, so emergencied it again and was given the list of 5 options (Start in safe mode, start in safe mode with networking etc). So first off, tried to run it in Last Known Good Configurations, which didn't work, nor did Start Windows Normally. Then I tried to run it in all of the safe mode options to no avail -They all came up with the blue screen, though the error message has been different each time. For the next time I try to run it in Last known good configuarations, a new error comes up from before, (this always been in the second section of the error in the brackets).

At the moment, the error is: *** Stop: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x8AFA5158, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000).

My OS is Windows XP Professional (I think, been long since I've looked at it :(, and I'm using S3). So I'd just like to ask here for help before diving in to the boot system configurations and messing it up more perhaps :(.

A:PC getting blue screen of death

Do you still have your windows XP disk? If not can you borrow one from somewhere (home or pro it doesnt matter)
I would suggest putting it into the machine while it starts up, then reset the computer so it has a chance to "look on" the disk, if you see a screen that says "To boot from CD press any key" thats great! If not then you need to jump into your BIOS (By pressing the DEL key, F2 or ESC key while it starts up before it gets to the XP logo) and tell your computer that the first boot device you want is the CD-ROM
ANyway, after you have pressed the anykey windows XP installer will boot up, when it gets to a static screen press R (to get to recovery console)
A black screen will appear and you need to tell it to logon to your windows installation (just press 1 and enter usually)
Anyway we are now going to run the scan disk thing again
type "CHKDSK /r /f" and press enter (without the "'s)
the CHKDSK is for "checkdisk"
/f - fixes errors on the disk
/r - Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information (implies /f)
Let this go through and when it is done type EXIT this should restart your computer safely, let us know where this takes you?
