Faded 1 inch stripe on laptop screen

Q: Faded 1 inch stripe on laptop screen

Last night when I was plugging in my ipod to my Toshiba Satellite laptop, a 1.5 inch or so verticle stripe appeared on my screen. Is this a portion of the LCD just getting old? Malfunctioning? Is it fixable?

The laptop is about 5 or 6 years old. Any ideas what may have caused this?

The bottom corner of my mitsubishi diamond pro 1000 21 inch montitor sometimes fades and this morning was highly redified. so I pressed the degauss button, and that fixed things up decently thought it is still a little faded. Strangely if I move the monitor around a bit it seems to get better, depending on how it faces, but the way I want it to face makes the bottom corner not so good. Is there something I can do, some maintenance technique that will improve this situation? Thanks in advance.

Hi, all,
I have had an intermittent problem over the last week or so. Every now and then, a darker grey vertical stripe appears on my screen. Normally, this covers the left quarter of my screen, but sometimes covers the whole left half of the screen. It's almost as if I have reduced the brightness of only this part of the screen compared with the rest.
It has again just appeared without warning. I attach a photo of it below. I'm not sure if it's relevant, but this stripe does not appear in the image if I take a screen grab.
I am based in Liberia and not near a Dell service agent, as far as I am aware, until returning to the UK for Christmas, so having it looked at by a Dell agent is not a practical proposition for the time being.
Any ideas on what causes this and how I can resolve it?

6 inch thick white lines down my laptop screen. 2 of them are solid white the others are fairly transparent but very noticeable, spaced out across the whole screen. The laptop itself works perfectly and the lines have been there a long time. There was only 1 to start with but its gotten worse over time. I am using an external monitor and play games a fair amount without any problems. I am wondering is this a screen or inverter issue or will i need a new motherboard for my laptop for a new graphics chip?

A:6 inch thick white lines down my screen but laptop works fine?

If you know about how to open inside the laptop, first check out the connection cable is seated properly between screen and mobo. But mostly times, you have to replace screen. There is no problem on Motherboard and screen inverter.

alesya00 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about a vertical blue stripe on your display and wanted to help. It's highly unlikely that this is a driver issue, and much more likely that this is either a failing display, or a failing video chipset, or both -- and both of these last two are very expensive to fix, likely more than simply replacing the laptop. A way to see if it IS the video driver is to boot into safe mode -- in which case, the special video drivers would then NOT be working: Safe Mode - Start Windows 10 in - Windows 10 ForumsGood Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on my post to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution".========================================================================

I have a small network that I admin (3 desktops, 2 laptops). We have been having problems. Bear with me. I will start from the beginning of problems in case the origin of this sp2 glitch is other than on this desktop.

All systems are running Sygate personal firewall with identical permissions. Nod32, automatic updates run, weekly scans. Microsoft Anti-spyware on all systems. Spybot and/or Adaware run regularly on all systems.

Desktop #1 had a HDD crash. Replaced HDD. Reconfigured it to work on network. Installed XP SP1 then immediately updated to SP2. Reinstalled software, printers, set up sharing, etc. All seemed to work fine.

We had a DLink VPN broadband router linked to a Linksys G-band wireless router from our DSL modem. We began losing internet connection which turned out to be the DLink failing. I have disconnected it (disabling our VPN, which was not needed at this time) and set everything up through the Linksys wireless router. Internet connection returned.

Added new HP 6540 printer to Desktop #3, (running sp2) Set it to share over network.

Desktop #1 and #3 were communicating well with each other.

#2 and laptop #1 were communicating well with each other.

Laptop #1 needed sp2 to resolve some subspooler errors in network setup to make it communicate with D-tops #1, #3. sp2 install smooth and successful, no data loss, no reconfigurations necessary.

Created new workgroup and put all D-tops and laptops on that new workgroup. minimal network functi... Read more

Strange issue with my computer, can only run it in safe-mode and it has pink lines down it, if I try to start it normally or repair the system; it restarts or says that it has not been successful. I've done some routing around online and it seems that these problems could be either the graphics card is failing or the power supply isn't getting enough power to the motherboard.
On start up all the bios crap at the beginning has gaps in it. Computer has been running fine until it started doing this yesterday when I turned it on.

My computer is an Advent, Processor Intel quad core Q6600 @ 2.40GHz, 3GB of RAM and 32-bit Windows 7 OS. The graphics card is on board, dunno what it is apart from plastic and metal.

I pulled it appart earlier today and cleared the oversized, bloated dust mites out. It's about 4 years old. I'm going to try reinstalling windows but I'm pretty sure it's a hardware problem from what I've read.

How can I find this out for definite without taking everything apart? Has anyone else heard of this problem. I'm very unwilling to part with my hard earned cash. I'm really stuck with this and would be very happy if I knew how to fix it.

Many thanks.

Specs: Windows XP, P4, Dell poweredge 400sc (intel-made board, 875p, pc only 6 months old), two maxtor 120gb ultra series ATA/133s, raided together as one 240gb hd by using raid 0+2 striped, promise fasttrak100 made from regular ATA/100 controller card (by soldering 1 wire in and updating the bios(common procedure as seen on the internet), worked flawlessly for 4 years so far).

I came back to my computer seeing it booting up. After reaching the black Windows XP screen with the loading bar at the bottom, a blue screen with a bunch of alphanumeric strings flashes by then quickly restarts. It goes by too fast for the human eye even with careful watching.

After rebooting itself, it asks if I would like to go into safe mode. I tried all modes of booting, but the same thing happens.

I tried to reinstall windows, but after providing the promise fasttrak100 raid drivers to the setup, it recognizes the disk as a brand new partition with 100% space available. This is clearly not the case since it has Windows XP it is booting into. So I skip the reinstall, fearful of screwing up the partition or data.

I next install a fresh XP on a spare HD, switching the raid over to slave in an attempt to access the drive from an outside source. Once I get to the desktop, I attempt to access the raid drive, and it says (disk not available--continue, retry, cancel).

The data recovery programs I tried also tell me the disk is not available.

What is going on? There has to be some kind of data beca... Read more

The title kind of says it all. Out of the blue this afternoon a neon green stripe appeared right down the far left side of the computer screen and everything in it looks faded. I thought maybe restarting the computer might take care of it but it didn't and I noticed a bright pink stripe in the same area of the screen on the blue windows welcome screen. I've got the latest Catalyst Drivers (13.4) from the AMD website, along with a Radeon HD 7950 from Sapphire.

As of right now, what happens is that if I launch into a game or anything graphically intensive, it will work initially. However, shortly thereafter, the screen starts to glitch/bug out, eventually crashing to either a screen with blue/brown vertical stripes, or a blank screen (that's been either brown or blue or white).

FurMark seems to bring it down fastest, and it seems to conk out @ ~52-54 degrees Celsius.

The top half of the Avatar on my Welcome Screen and Start Menu is faded above a downward curve extending from side-to-side in the image from the tops of the Avatar's frame color shift points--with that part of the picture above the curve being much lighter in color than that below it.

This condition both when I use one of Vista's provided .bmg images or one of my own .jpg images.

Originally, I thought that this was some kind of stupid "effect" that Vista was going for, but now think that it's probably yet another Vista "glitch"!

Any suggestions or comments?

This might be the wrong place for this question, so feel free to move it.

At the moment I run a latitude C600 (hence the sig), last night whilst lying in bed looking at the ceiling, trying had to nod off (dont you hate insomnia) I was struck by the thought of trying to run my laptop on a 3.5 inch drive instead of the Mini 2.5 inch that's in it now.

I can picture how I would go about it, but I need to know how to power it,

At the moment I have a cable that plugs into an IDE socket on a Mobo and then you can plug the 2.5 inch drive into it and it has a power lead that links only to the 5v ( I think) which powers the drive.

Question, ,,can a standard 3.5 inch run on just the 5v supplied to a 2.5 inch drive or does it need the 12v supplied on the yellow wire as well as the 5v on the red (or is it the other way round).

So now you ask "why" would I want to do it, same as why people climb mountains and swim the Channal, Coz I just want to know if it can be done.

A:Using a 3.5 inch drive on a laptop

The drive motors run on 12V, so yes, you need it.

My Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop, which was bought towards the beginning of this century, currently has a loud, slow, and very warm IBM TravelStar DJSA-210 hard disk. Needless to say, it's very old, and I would like to have a quieter, cooler, and faster laptop.

I've been eyeing a purchase of Addonics' CF Hard Drive Adapter and a nice big CF card to replace the hard disk. However, I just noticed today that the card adapter has 44 pins, while the hard disk has 44 contacts on a PCB-type connector.

Is there some type of adapter to brige these two connectors, or are there any other affordable ways to install flash-based storage (dedicated SSD or otherwise)? Or am I SOL and should get a new laptop?

I do like to game casually at 720p or what ever as long as it doesn't lag. I record the class sessions using OBS which makes the computer lag a fair bit. Hi buddy,

I?m sorry to hear that but it seems it was just bad luck. Such things can happen always independent how old your notebook is and how often you used it. Notebook is an electrical part so nobody can say how long the parts working properly.

Anyway, now it?s important you find a new and cheap screen. At first I would contact an authorized service provider and ask the guys how much it would be cost. They can order such parts for you.

If you are familiar with notebook disassembling second hand places like eBay would be also interesting for you. If you find a second hand display you can replace it yourself, usually second hand parts are a lot of cheaper so it would be worth a try.

But maybe another one here is a screen for you and make you an offer via email. I hope so. ;)

Hello Lenovo, I recently bought ( Aug-2016 ) a Lenovo Y700 15.6" laptop with the 16 GB variant. When I opened the laptop and started the windows, the first thing I noticed that, the screen is dimmer on the right side and bright on the left side. It is not easy noticeable but it bothers me a lot sometimes when the screen is completely WHITE. Only then it is easy to identify the brightness issue. I am not sure if this is how backlit LED IPS panels work, but will be happy if anyone from Lenovo can clarify it.  The brightness just fades from centre to the right side of the screen, but the fade is very minute it is not easily captured on the pic to share. My query is, should I be bothered ? Should I get Lenovo team to check it ? Or is it anyother way to reproduce the issue in a better way to take a decision as to ask for support ? Awaiting your inputs.

Here is the Manual: Manual See p. 50. That shows replacement of the 2.5 inch drive. Page 55 shows an M.2 mSSD. However, the are some issues right now with HP Notebooks and trying to add an aftermarket M.2. I can get more specific if you like but right now the best advice is just to install a 2.5 inch SSD drive in place of the hard drive.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Hello, I am very interested in purchasing an HP Spectre x360 laptop; however, I have been waiting for several months in hopes for the 15.6 inch version to become available in the Ash Silver color. Currently, only the 13.3 inch Spectre comes in Ash Silver (which is a brown color with gold accent designs). I have contacted HP sales representatives and unfortunately they are not privy to this information. They did state that they've received a large volume of inquiries and interest in this specific Ash Silver laptop color, so it seems like more people than just myself would like to see other laptop options available in this color combination. If there are plans to manufacture the 15.6 inch HP Spectre laptop in the Ash Silver color in the near future, could you please let me know? I desperately need a new laptop but have been holding out until the 15.6 inch Spectre x360 is available in the Ash Silver color I want. I'd rather not continue waiting if there is no chance the larger laptop will be produced in this color. Thank you for reviewing this question.

Hey guys first off im new to the community cause I just got my first Lenovo about 10 days ago after using HP's for most of my life. So far I love it, everything about it is amazing its got the i7 processor and the Intel 5500 graphics which is plenty for anything I can bring to the table. But I have had two issues with it so far I havent been able to resolve; 1. Somehow or another after the second day I set my computer in what im assuming is "FN key lock" or something like that. F1-F12 normally would require you to hold FN in order to click, while the functions such as mute, volume up/down, brightness adjust, etc... would be free to click. But then after the second day it switched and I prefer it the way it was at first. 2. This one is a little more serious. about 1 out of every 4 times I start my computer the touch screen will begin to freak out and act as if something is touching it in like 20 different places at the same time. I can see the little touch circles appear all over the screen when my hands arent even touching the computer. Obviously when this is happening it renders the computer useless cause everything gets clicked and all I can do to stop it is force shut it down. Any help or solutions would be MUCH appreciated, thanks guys!!!

So I started my computer up yesterday, and I noticed an incomplete display. I looked at my resolution settings, everything was normal. I restarted and everything went back to normal. I fired my computer up today, everything was still fine.

I was having performance issues, noticed I had 80-something processes running, and decided that it might be helpful to reduce that a bit. I ran msconfig and disabled a number of programs. I reset the computer, no issues. I turned my laptop off, went home from the coffee shop where I was studying, turned the computer on, and something's off. I can see maybe the top 1/4 of the taskbar and 1/2 of my screen on the right is not being used. That's the same 'incomplete display" that I saw yesterday. Three restarts later, nothing has changed. Most of the other errors I've found online show that this problem in relation to playing a game. I've not done that, and nothing has made a resolution change. The computer is supposedly in 1280/800 resolution (the apparent preferred resolution).

When I take a screenshot, the screen looks normal.

I've also attached a picture (taken with my cellphone, so it is nice and dark, sorry) that shows what the screen really looks like.

My drivers are up to date. I don't know what else to check or where to look. I'm on a 2-year-old HP G62 notebook with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit (SP1) running. My graphics card is the on-board, generic Intel HD graphics card.

A:lost part of taskbar and 1/2 inch of screen on right

Hello Bob, and welcome to Sevenforums!

For now, if it helps you any, you might try lowering the resolution just so you can see more. Now, there is a program called "revo uninstaller" that is free and removes more parts of a program than windows uninstaller does. If you download it here, you can use it to remove all parts of your graphics driver, and install the new one again, clean. Make sure you uninstall ALL parts of it, and any other graphics related software for your GPU. By the way, what is your computer called? Then, go into the control panel of your GPU (if you have it) and change the resolution from in there.

You might run this tool just to check some things: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Flashing the BIOS is dangerous and should only be used as a last resort.

Are there any keys on your laptop that enable you to adjust the monitor screen? Usually you don't have to do this with digital monitors, and especially not with laptops... I doubt you even have such keys on a laptop.

I can't imagine there's be any measurable difference. SATA uses real shielded cables with termination at both ends, so electrical interference that you get with ATA cables shouldn't be an issue.

Hi there

Got a nice light small laptop(screen 14 inch - enough for travelling) which has a native resolution of 1080 X 1920 --much better than the usual 768 X 1366 - especially when viewing movies etc. The display is really a significant improvement over the bog standard 768 X 1366 and really noticeable also when typing word documents or reading text.

(For travelling etc the 14 inch size is far more convenient than the more usual 16 - 17 inch sizes).

However the windows standard texts are tiny (boxes, drop down menus etc etc). -- I fixed most of it by adjusting text size settings and display to 150% -- the start menu items still have too small text.

If I increase the display resolution to 175% things like file explorer fail to start when clicked and the screen refreshes periodically - so set back to 150%.

Any body know of a way to increase text size on the Start menu.

Funnily enough when you use the WIN+X key / right mouse click on start button the text sizes in that list are fine --it's just the standard start menu when you click the windows start button.

I'm not sure what it is with I.T developers but it seems every time you get a decent improvement in the graphics on a computer the text sizes usually become so tiny as to be unreadable --I suppose it's difficult for a bank of developers all to work with 60 inch screens !!!!! but surely some of them must be able to test stuff out on decent bits of kit.

A:Start Menu size text too small on 14 inch laptop 1920 X 1080p

Sometimes I think I'm going blind here! Need to pull out a magnifying glass for text smaller then a driving test! How's it been by the way?

The DPI setting can be a help or hinderance at times with this as well as changing the style of text. The item of interest for you however is going into the Settings>System, Display, etc. there and opening up the Advanced display options where you then scroll down on the left side there to the "Advanced sizing of text and other items. Once you click on that the screen in the Control Panel then appears as seen in the snipping here.

You will note that was done on the fly as well as pointing out the one item of interest being the "menus" option which is likely the one thing that is able to make this specific type of change for you. That's unless you decide to change from the default Start menu that comes with 10 to something like Stardock's Start10 option? I just added that onto a new 17" 10 laptop lately when the old 7 laptop upgraded to 10 flopped out for no reason leaving only a black screen to look at. Backlit that is and hopefully not the integraded graphics chip on the board. If able to be fixed that can be passed along from grandmother to one of the grandsons since they keep borrowing and toying with the parent(s)'s laptops and ... Hi I have a Inspiron 3543 laptop, i7-5500U 8Gb RAM, Nvidia 840M 2Gb, Win 10 Home

The laptop boots quickly without issues, during normal operation (web browsing, accessing the file system) it just freezes randomly for up to 5-10 minutes a time showing 100% disk usage. There is plenty of disk space it's a 1TB drive I have 900 Gb free! I have done the following things which haven't fixed my problems.
Turned off SuperFetch, turned off all app notifications, turned off BITS.
I have removed all antivirus software from the computer other than Windows Defender.
Installed the latest device drivers from Dell, flashed the BIOS, Chipset, Video Drivers.
Turning off SpeedStep in BIOS improved performance dramatically but the computer still does this.
The BIOS diagnostic tool didn't show up any hardware problems.
Curiously I am able to delay this from happening if I don't access the file system, ie use Windows Explorer. Opening any folders from the desktop instantly causes this problem.
Please help!

Hi IVANB303,
Looks like you have basically tried most possible required steps to isolate the issue.
Restart the system and check in Safe mode - if it works fine.
Create a local admin account and check if it works -
Run a stress test through Support Assist -
Also, run an extended test on the HDD through onboard diagnostics - restart and press f12 key on starup - and check for any possible errors.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.

I have always depended on the key on the connector to hook up IDE (and SCSI) drives. I've done quite a few, and maybe I've just been lucky, but I've never had a problem that I know of. Aren't IDE and SCSI ribbon cables "straight-thru" ? Is there any wire cross-over ? What are the implications of having the stripe on the last pin on the board and the controller ? Can anyone here tell me what stripe size i should use for my raid setup, i'm going for a raid 0, i'll be using it mostly for gaming. the future for video recording. basicly i'm looking for speed n' proformance. intel has suggested using 16k to 128k for stripe sizing, but i think there more to that, thanks.

A:Stripe sizing?

HD performance; lots to be considered.

At the top, you want maximum cluster utilization with minimum last block free space.
In a Raid-0 configuration, read cluster == stripe size.

So, how do you set 'an appropriate stripe size'?

It goes like this. KNOW THY DATA!
you need to know, How Frequently Do I Access Each File? Fq
how big is each file? Fs
here's the hardest, is the file updated or totally replaced? UR
...{a save as without a name collision is a new file, }
...{whereas a name collision is a delete followed by a new file}
...{save is sometimes an update in place}

Performance tuning is always 'an exercise', so be patient with yourself.

To get the Weighted Average data Transfer,
.... Fq X Fs == Effect of Data Transfer
a small file updated daily: 1/day x 1024 x 365 days/year = 372,735/year
a smaller file updated hourly: 24/day x 512 x 365 days/year = 4,485,120/year
a large file updated weekley: 1/wk x 2048 x 52weeks = 106,496/year

add'em and divide by the number of files == WA
WA/365 will be the average I/O traffic per day (in bytes) == IOD

divide IOD by the average number of files / day == avg file size / day AFSD

divide AFSD by {powers of 2} x 1024
eg: 2k, 4k, 8k, 16k, .... 256k
this will be the effective I/O buffer count required to transfer the AFSD workload.
Keep the fractional part as large as possable, eg:
15.9 is a better number that 14.1 (large cluster loss).

Hi and thanks for the discussion of raid drives. Here is my problem... (I'm back but got a better handle on this). I have two drives configured 0 striped. I can see them in the raid bios information. The drives are fast and as I understand it, Dell configures these drives to split data - BUT, I have installed about 32 Gigs on the harddrive and
Vista is reporting double that.

I thought, at first, it was mirroring the drive, but according to Dell - raid 0 is not a mirror drive. Could it be just Vista? How can I tell for sure what I have here. Bugs the heck out me........Is there some utility anyone could recommend so that I could see what is on the drives? (added this note).....I just tested this and if I install a "program", it doubles the size as shown in the properties of the "c" drive. If I install a folder (say some large clipart), it counts it correctly. Go figure...

Thanks so much in advance.

Hi all,

I have a stripe pair as my main storage and I've had problems with jerky avi playback since I built the machine. I'm not sure why it only seems to affect .avi's but whether the avi is part of a cutscene in a game or even playback of a downloaded file the result is the same - intermittant jerkyness (new word?).

I decided to take the issue a little more seriously now because it is a pain when playing a game. I've found that the problem seems to be the hard drive setup. If I take an avi and stick it on a usb stick, playback is fine.
Any tips on some tools to diagnose the problem a little further would be great if anyone knows of any.

Hello guys
Hope anyone can shed some light on this ?
situation is as follows :
original install was a winxp64 with another two disks striped for data.(onboard nforce raid)
stripe is still ok on this install.
same machine but with a fresh vista install (on another hdd) :
1 stripe disk (233Gb) is not found, however the stripe (466Gb) is recognized (see screenshot)
Booting the original xp64 disk gives me access again to the stripe, so I know it's ok.
The weird thing is it worked initially, after switching from dynamic to basic type.
I then created a backup of this drive which I now just now restored and : no more stripe.
I tried a fresh (32 and 64 bit) vista install but the problem remains.
All disks are sata
anyone any idea ?

Okay, I'm finally going to ask for help.Hi. I'd like to think I'm pretty decent and extracting viruses/trojans/spyware, but this one's got me. About a couple of months ago, I contracted the AntiVirus Vista bug and thought I put it to rest. It was tricky, but in the aftermath, I still seem to be stuck with a nagging hijacker. It will open a random browser window every few minutes, but that's abotu it. The only other thing is it won't let Windows update. I've hit the computer with updated Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D and especially MalwareBytes numerous times to no avail. The most promising response was Trend Micro's Housecall which DID detect a JG trojan of some kind, but every time I "fixed" it, it came back! Is HouseCall just to show you what you have so you have to buy the software? Anyhow, I tried learning how to read Hijack This! logs, and went at it myself, but she's still hanging on. I'd really rather not have to make the jump to Windows 7 yet if I don't have to. Let me see if I can get my log posted here... any and all help appreciated immensely. I know when I'm licked. On booting up my HP Pavillion a1730n desktop I get occasionally a yellow stripe on the right side of my ViewSonic VX2235WM monitor just before it boots into windows. ViewSonic company suggests that my video card is going but HP says no problem, not to worry. Any ideas on what's happening would be appreciated.

A:Yellow Stripe on side of monitor

Do you have any speakers near the monitor? If so, try moving them away from it as the magnets can effect the display.

I have a NT Server that boots to an IDE drive, but also has 3 SCSI drives in a stripe set w/parity.
One of the drives has failed.
Using Disk Administrator, the 3 SCSI's are logical drives D, E, and F. D has failed.
How do I know which physical drive has failed?

Using CTRL Panel>SCSI Adapters applet, I can tell the 3 SCSI ID's are 0, 1, and 8.

Can I assume the first drive is the one that failed?

A:Space Under the Start Button Stripe

Can you try and upload a screen print so I can have a look. I will be able to determin if its hardware or software related bases on the image. If the image has a black strip on it then its software, which I do not have a clue how to fix. if it does not then its the hardware trying to display a screen resolution which is incompatiable with your monitor.

Have you got a widescreen monitor? if not try changing the screen resolution to either 800x600 or 1024x768. If this fixes your problem great, find a resolution that suits you. If not then check your screen is not widescreen.

About the standby problem. Have you tried pressing your power button ONCE? On some computers it automatically cuts power to all connected devices. My PC does this.

Are there any general rules for configuring stripe size on drives/RAID arrays? I've seen some people wanting to use smaller stripe sizes (as low as 512 bytes) on SSD drives. I've seen some posts saying 64K, the usual default, is best.

What are the advantages/disadvantages to larger/smaller stripe sizes? What types of files are best for what stripe size? What stripe sizes line up best with what uses?

Thanks for any thoughts on the matter.
