DVD wil not read CD's anymore

Q: DVD wil not read CD's anymore

I dont know when this happened but I an no longer read CD's in my DVD rom. DVD's work fine but it doesnt even register the CD'd in windows, it just asks me to insert a CD. I have tried a few things like removing the device from windows, and letting windows reinstall it, and trying to force it to use othe drivers but nothing works.

The weird part is that the DVD rom will read CD's when it is attached to another computer just not when on its home PC.

I am running Win XP, I have scanned the computer with antivirus, and ehareware removal apps, and I even ran the Sony rootkit removal tool just in case, and I still have this issue. oh and one last thing I have a DVD burner in the same computer that can read CD's.

I used to be able to read DVD's with either WMP or HP DVD play. HP DVD Play stopped working (Stopped opening actually, I could click on it as much as I wanted, nothing) so I deleted it. Today, I put a DVD in and open WMP but it says that I don't have a DVD decoder... Is there any way that I can get it back by doing something on the computer or I have to get a new one off a website ?

Thanks for the help

A:Can't read DVD's anymore

The decoder must have come with HP DVD Play, so reinstall that if you can. If not you can get VLC media player which is free and comes with a dvd decoder.

Some of my Cd's have suddenly refused to open on my system, they are all my own burnt copies of Jpeg images, some are ok others not! I have tried them in the DVD & Cd Rom Drives.
I have cleaned the drive and discs, my system tries to read the cd's, which causes all other programmes to freeze, I can't get into 'my computer' or 'run' mode, it all locks up until I eject?
I have tried one of the Cd's on another PC, and it works fine.
Has anyone any suggestions please?
The only recent changes to my Pc are tweaks to enable Microsoft Combat Flight sim to work better, could this have caused this problem?
My System:
HP 750uk. 1.6GHz P4, running Windows XP

Thank you

A:cd's won't read anymore!

The devil is always in the details.

CDR or RW? Did you use mastering software or packet writing (did you format the CDs)? What software? Data? Audio? Video? Any difference in content, recording method or CD type between the ones that will read and the ones that won’t?

It hasn't been a problem at all before, but it won't read CD's/DVD's anymore.

Usually when I put in a CD, iTunes pops up and asks me if I want to burn it to the Hard Drive. It didn't come up for any of the CD's I own, plus wouldn't pop up the DVD player when I inserted a DVD.

When I put in a disc, the computer makes sounds like it's reading it, but then nothing happens.

Any suggestions?

A:My Laptop won't read CD's anymore

You should try a cd/dvd lens cleaner or you need to replace your optical drive.

It was working fine the past few days. Then today when I tried to use it, it wouldn't read anything. I've tried everything I can think of. I've uninstalled PowerDVD, AnyDVD HD, and DVDIdle. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drive in the Device Manager a hundred times. Now I'm at my wits' end. Nothing I do makes my drive read discs. Neither Blu-rays nor DVDs. Meantime, the older DVD drive works fine. I've tried everything and now I really need your help. Help!

I'm using the LG GGC-H20L drive with the latest firmware. I even reinstalled the firmware for good measure. I'm running a Dell XPS 410 with XP MCE version 2002, all the latest Windows updates. And I am STUCK!

A:Blu-ray drive won't read anymore.

Maybe I should specify more. The computer sees the drive. But when I try to load a disc, the tray closes and nothing happens. It doesn't mount the disc. When I try to access it through explorer, it just says "Please insert a disc in drive E." I really need some help on this one.

How does it act with CDs?
Are you trying pressed DVDs and BDs, not burned ones?

The drive could be dead, especially if the firmware update killed it. That can happen.

Hi All,

Have a windows 7 desktop pc and all of a sudden my pc wont read sdhc cards.
I have read to disable the sdhc host but when my card readers are plugged in i cant see anything that says "sdhc host" but did disable and then reenable the card reader itself.
I also read about uninstall of generic sd/mmc usb device but that did not fix the problem also.
I have been having an issue where when i reset my pc it sits at "Marvel adaptor init 88se61xx" for a few minutes then loads so not sure if that is effecting the sdhc cards.
Hoping someone can help me.

I bought a very basic mp3player yesterday (Difrnce, mp851) and put some music on it. I didn't do anything odd, just opening the Fdrive which appeared when I plugged in the USB and then putting the mp3files on there. This went just fine, 2.5GB on a 4GB memory. No worries.
So now I tried to play it and I put power into the device for the first time (AAAbattery). The device says "initiating" and opens the menu. However, all folders are empty! That's odd, so I plug the mp3player into the computer (ASUS laptop, windows 8.1) again, and the Fdrive has indeed 2.5GB of its memory in use. HOWEVER, this time, when I open the Fdrive folder, it is empty (0 items). Where I saw a list of mp3files the first time round, it is all empty now. But "properties" still gives 2.5GB to read! I am certain I am not in some subfolder, but apart from that I really have no clue what is going on.
Does anybody have any ideas on what I can do? I would like to bring it back to the shop, but they'll probably just give me a new one without the possibilities of copying the files and I do want this for I put them on the mp3player permanently... no back up...
BASICALLY: files are mysteriously gone (0 items), memory still occupied...
Screenshot (note: Dutch version of windows)

A:can't read files from mp3player (anymore)

Are you saying that you copied files to the new player that you no longer have access to so that they cannot be recopied?

I just reinstalled XP on my desktop on a fresh hard drive. Was able to load 2 disks of programs using the dvd drive then it just would not read anymore dvds. The icon shows in My Computer and is listed in the Device Manager. The icon will change to whatever is on the dvd I put in but then displays the message "only part of a read process memory or write process memory request was completed" I uninstalled the secondary ide controller & rebooted and nothing changed. I then uninstalled the device in the device manager rebooted and again nothing happened. If I am not mistaken there are no drivers for this and so they would not need to be updated right ? What am I missing. is something swithed off or hooked up wrong. the hard drive is on the ide cable first then the dvd drive cause this is the only way both would work. a computer dude did that. I should have SP3 installed as well as whatever updates windows keeps sending me
And if I got a sata dvd drive would this happen too. cause i only have one place on the board to hook up a ide cable
Thanks for helping

A:My Sony DVD RW DRU-840A will not read anymore

There will be generic drivers installed from your XP disc try this method to reinstall them.

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click System and Maintenance, and then click System,
On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
In Device Manager, expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, right-click the CD and DVD devices, and then click Uninstall.
When you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove the device, click OK.
Restart the computer.
After the computer restarts, the drivers will be automatically installed.Click to expand...

If that makes no diference the chances are that the drive has failed. There are two lasers in the drive have you tried it with both DVD's and CD's, you might find it works with one and not the other.

Make sure you have the hard drive jumper set for Master and the DVD jumper set for Slave. It is, apparently, much better to have the Hard Drive on the end of the cable.

You should have no problems setting up a SATA DVD drive as long as you install the correct SATA drivers for your motherboard, they will be available from the manufacturers site.

hi, i have a HP pavilion laptop with a Toshiba ODD-DVD SD-R6252 dvd+rw/cdrw burner in it. I've always had media compatabilty issues with this drive, but now it seems none of my videos i've burned onto dvd+rws can be read with this thing! I did the firmware update and bios, tried all kinds of media, i just don't get it. It still burns dvd+r's ok and cds. I bought brand new verbatim dvdrw and burned a few movies, but now they won't play back, i can't even get the drive to read them to reformat them (HP support told me to buy verbatim!)...but they play flawlessly in my compaq and home dvd player!??? any help???

i think the eye on the drive may have weakened

a dvd rw reflects less light then a dvd r cd

this happened to the cd burner that came with my compaq 7470

and if it can happen to a cd burner, them theres a chance that it can happen to a dvd burner

Windows Vista Home Premium 32 - After loading new updates, my cd drive plays 1 min 4 sec of any cd then tells me it can't read it because it is dirty or something else. The error code is: C00D0FAB (Windows Media Player cannot read the CD. The disc might be dirty or damaged. Turn on error correction, and then try again.) I did the "error correction", no change.
The dvd part of the drive is fine. The cd problem is for store cd music and personally recorded music. Since it does read and play for a minute before stopping, I think maybe it is in the settings, but I know nothing about computers. Trying to rip tunes to my computer does the same thing. It rips the first minute then errors and it stops ripping.
Please help. Thank you.

I'm experiencing a USB device problem. I have two USB thumb drives of different brands that used to work. Now, if I plug them in (either front-side or back-side ports), the computer tones/beeps to let me know that it recognizes them, but neither drives auto-open nor are accessible via My Computer. I know for sure that the drives work, as they can be opened, explored, and formatted on other computers.

The device manager shows the Host Controllers and Root Hubs as working properly. I've looked for driver updates, uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers manually, uninstalled and allowed Windows to reinstall automatically on reboot, and I've tried disabling the 2.0 USB on BIOS and re-enabling it on reboot.

The Disk Manager shows the USB thumb drives. I've tried reformating them there, but a prompt informs me that is not possible because "the partition or volume is not enabled". Assigning drive names seems to do no good, and I can't disk-check for error either.

What bugs me is that the drives work on other computers. I would think it's a virus of some sort, though that is improbable as I did a full scan and clean a few days ago.

A:USB thumb drives don't read anymore

We really need the brand and model of the computer or motherboard.
Setup error on your computer. You may have changed something accidentally while working elsewhere. If your USB ports work for printers, scanners, and other components, you need to do a reset somewhere. You have done everything correctly.
If you haven't done this, go to your BIOS at startup, and see if there is something disabled... There will likely be something on one of the BIOS screens that must be enabled.
Or go to the motherboard manufacturers web site, and scroll through the online manual for that motherboard.

Hi everyone, first of all I would like to apologise for my lack of computer knowledge. If I have not make my problem clear enough, please let me know.

I have a Packard Bell MC 6112 and running on Window XP. It has 2 slots (bottom and top). The top one (the D: drive) is not working anymore for some reason. Everytime I slot a disk in, maybe it be a game, DVD or CD, I go to Start --> My Computer --> DVD drive (D:) --> Right-click it and select 'Open'. After about 5-10 seconds, message pops-up "Please insert a disk into the D:." I could see the light in front of the drive slot blinking and I could also hear a clicking sound coming from the drive. But miserably it fails to open. I don't know if this help, when I right-click it and select 'Eject', it ejects the slot like normal. Any suggestion??? Really appreciated.

At the moment, I'm using the bottom slot (E:) to play my CDs but it doesn't always work with every CDs but it burn perfectly tho. Thank you guys in advance for any comments.

A:my D: drive can't read any disk anymore, please help!!!

Hi King julien,
how old is your DVD-ROM??? Do you hear the media is rolled in DVD-ROM???
Maybe it is stop working because laser is damaged or something else like the mechanic is spoiled.
I think repairing could be waste of money, DVD burners are very cheap today, and my suggestion is to buy yourself brand new DVD-RW :)

I'm stumped. Burned a copy of a DVD with my LG GSA-4081B DVD Burner. Been using since last December. Now, it won't do a thing. Shows up in Hardware Device Manager, shows up at windows start-up, shows up when using Easy DVD-CD Creator 6, Nero6, DeepBurner, etc..., but when I try to burn files onto CDR or DVD-R, blank discs don't show, comes up with "Insert Blank Disc".
I've unplugged, restarted machine, replugged it in, WIn XP sp1 recognizes it again, but same thing. I've burned many disks before with it, and have also rebuild many machines so jumpers and cables are all proper. The thing just won't recognize any disks in it, blank or rewritten. (WIndows Explorer can't read any of the disks, but sees the drive)

A:Computer Doesn't Read Cds Or Dvds Anymore

Well if it is reseting with BSOD all of the time and also now not being able to read CD's then I would say that is it likely a hardware issue. Or a driver issue. Since you have only just re-formatted and it is still happening then the later is less likely. do you have any information from the BSOD screen.

I have a seemingly trivial problem, but I cannot solve it despite my omniscient friend Google.
A few days ago my Windows 10 did a Windows Update again, and since this time I can no longer read my taskbar jumplists.
This is quite annoying, because I rely a lot on them at my daily work, but regardless what I try, I cannot change the color of the text.
It looks like WindowsUpdate changed the color of the taskbar jumplist to black on black.
Does anybody know if this can be changed somewhere ?
I found a comparable problem in the net with Windowss 8.1, and there is mentioned that KB3072318 must be uninstalled, but I have Windows10 and there is no such fix.
See what I mean:

Thanks for any help, Herbert

A:Since new update taskbar jumplists cannot be read anymore

Hi @Herbert , welcome to!
I noticed in your screenshot, transparent headers; it may have something to do with that.
Try, uninstalling the program, rebooting then re-install the program.

Hello, I have an Asus N53S laptop, and im having issues with my DVDROM, its a Slimtype BD E DS4E1S. Just recently when trying to back up some data i got a message while using DVD Author Plus, that the "Seleced CD/DVD drive has been disconnected." I tried using other various programs such as Express Burn, and the built iin burning tools through Windows and would get other error messages. I found a Firmware update through Asus' website and that fixed the problem for one more burn, but now its back to the same old errors. I have no problem reading discs of every kind, but writing just isent working. Through the device manager every says its working fine. Im running Windows 7, 64 bit, service pack 1.

A:DVD drive will read, but wont write anymore.

Just to put you right, it's not a DVD-ROM drive, it's a DVD-R R/W drive with Blu-Ray reading capability.
A DVD-ROM drive, by definition, cannot write to anything, it just reads CD-ROM & DVD-ROM discs (ROM = Read Only Memory).

Device Manager is a very useful tool but it's not very clever at knowing when a device is physically broken, as I suspect your drive is. Provided the drive is connected up properly, will turn on, & has it's driver installed, Device Manager will be blissfully ignorant and tell you "This device is working properly" even when the device has an internal fault.

You probably need a new drive. I doubt you will get support from HP, but look at

The easiest way to make sure the drive is at fault is to try it with a different operating system. That makes it clear whether it is Windows or hardware. try Ubuntu or Knoppix and boot them to run in memory so you can try the drive.

hi guys,

something really odd happened yesterday.... Burner working overall ok - had a dirty lens the other day - cleaned and was working well..

Yesterday I tried windows' burn function, which I never tried, and there's an option where you can use the disk like a hard disk, or sort of... I tried that.. had a Verbatim DVD-RW inside... it burned whatever he had to do.

Then he was supposed to close the session, it took ages and I got a bit annoyed so I opened the tray, it seemed to have finished what he was doing, and ended there.

After that I tried some other DVD as I had to do something, and now it turns out is not reading or writing anymore Verbatim Disks! as if he was offended I didn't let him odd is that???

if I put a blank disk in it starts reading it and after a while it says no disk... if I put an old DVD but still OK it says the same. But on another brand, TDK, Tesco or some original Nikon dvd I have, it read those perfectly...

I have Nero here, model is HP DVD Ram UJ8B1 - or is he like a girl and in few hours will be working again?

hey, my computer generally reads disks, music cd's, dvd's, and games (new like sims 3, and old like theme hospital and shogun total war)

ive just got anno 2070 and put in the disk, but its not recognizing it at all, when i first put the disk in, it whirs, as it knows there is a disk there, and a disk icon appears next to the cursor, but then nothing, no disk appears in My computer, and when i click on the drive it asks me to insert a disk, i have tested the disk on a different computer running vista, anno 2070 runs perfectly, and also says it does run on windows 7, i have also tested other disks since putting the game into the windows 7 computer, which work fine, and checked whether the disk can be read in a virtual machine (windows xp in this case), which it cant as i expected, i have run the Microsoft disk checker and all it said was that the disk was unreadable, but the vista computer proves it is readable.

any tips on what to do next? i really want to get playing this

A:dvd drive wont read specific disk, will read on other vista computer

I would think that your optical drive and that particular brand DVD media don't go together well. ( I have an Imation DVD+R DL that my Samsung drive only reads at times but not most of the time. On four other drives - a Sony, a Liteon, an Asus and a Plextor - the media is recognised and accessible without any problems. The Samsung drive is clean, has the latest firmware, can read and write other DVD media. So where am I? )

You may just try cleaning the lense with a Lense Cleaner CD. If it does not help, try burning anno 2070 to another known-to-be-good brand media at a lower speed.

I tried unchecking read only.
When apply and look it is back to read only.

How can I make this read and write permission?

A:public tv folder read only? mythtv needs read write persmissions

You can do this by going into the C:>Users>Public folder properties, click the Sharing tab then click on the Advanced Sharing button showing in the first picture.

Click the box to share the folder like in the second picture, at that point the Permissions button will light up.

Click the permissions button, Add check marks for full control "third picture" then hit the Apply button, on all windows click Ok etc.

At this point the Public folder and it's subfolder will have read/write access.

A:Hard Drive canNOT Be Read, Computer won't boot. Read Error

Hi malpert and welcome to the TechSpot Forum

As a laptop only has the ability to support 1 harddrive your option is to remove the drive from the laptop and connect it to a desktop PC using a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor and try to read the files on it, however I would download the test tools from the makers website and run a thorough test on the drive to ensure readability of the drive.

Remember though if the drive has failed mechanically then any data may be lost and you will need to use one of the professional data recovery services such as "ontrack data recovery" to get it back.

Whenever I boot up my VAIO (VGN-SZ750N) laptop an all-blue screen appears only momentarily, so that there's no time to read any of what is clearly a very wordy warning in white typescript that fills the whole screen. How can I stop this long enough to read it and take whatever action it recommends?

then, something happens that may be related to this . . .

soon afterward, a boxed message appears saying: "System has recovered from a serious error . . . " Clicking on this results in a huge number of figures that would challenge anybody who attempted to write them down.

Ok I just spent about three hours looking in this forum to solve my problem and no dice.

Here it goes: I'm running xp pro and I have a Norcent RW-481 48x12x48 CDRW probably not the best brand but oh well. I'm using Nero 6, InCD is not installed.

The problem: It does not recognize any data CD's or any CD's that the drive itself writes. I can play an audio CD, which elimates (I think) that the read lense is dirty and I can burn a CD, which elimates (I think) that my burn lense is dirty. I'm mentioning dirty lenses because a post in this forum suggested that a dirty lense may be the problem. So, before taking things apart I wanted to post in the forum the problem. Any other suggestions of what else I can look for?

More info: I even switched around the jumpers from cable select to master, same result.

I really believe I have a setting wrong in my XP pro operating system. Any suggestions????? :cronfused:

Lastly, The drive is recognized corectly in device manager

Hello everyone. I've recently reinstalled Windows 7 (two, three days ago) and I'm having a problem with my World of Warcraft Addons. I'm thinking the problem is due to parts of my World of Warcraft folder being read only. In the Properties menu of the folder, the "read only" check box is not checked but filled in with a little blue square. Now being a windows noob I'm not 100% sure, but I'm assuming that means it's read only. So I unchecked the box, pressed okay but if I open the Properties window again, it's still got the little blue box.

I've ran a few virus/malware scanners, and I don't seem to have anything. I've installed all of the Windows updates and I'm still having the same problem.

Thanks in advance everybody!

A:Read only folders revert back to read only

By default all folders with Files in them, the properties are Read Only (Only applies to Files in Folder) Meaning that if the actual file within the folder isn't Read Only, the rest of it isn't either. (test this theory on any other folders on your computer) so that is not your problem with WoW

Hello, I recently installed a game which came on a DVD disk
The install had a few problems, and it needed to restart several times. (It looked as though it was unable to read the disc, which resulted in a failed install)
Eventually it installed and all was fine.
The game needs a disc check to start up, and so it must be able to read the DVD before the game can start. It was able to read it, and I quit and restarted the game several times with no problems. However, I tried another game restart and the launcher could NOT read the DVD ("no disk in drive" error). I re-inserted the disc and it worked.

Later, I had the same trouble multiple times. It worked one final time, but I later tried to start the game (and thus read the disc) and it refused to acknowledge a disc was in the drive. I restarted, I removed filters by editing the registry, I uninstalled the DVD drive drivers and even tried blowing air into the drive. I have also tried microsoft's "fix it" software for the drive. None of these methods resolved the problem.

The drive cannot read any other DVDs either (opening them from "computer" just opens the disk tray and states there is no disc in the drive)
The drive IS able to read CDs, which obviously means something (I'm not sure if there are two different lasers or something?)
For this reason I'm leaning towards a software fault, but I don't know what to do to remedy it.

The drive in question: TSSTcorp DVD+RW TS-H653F AT... Read more

After burning a DVD today on my Micro Solutions DVD-/+RW I could suddenly no longer read DVDs on that Drive. I have no idea what happen. At first I thought the drive was gone, but I put a CD in it and it reads it just fine.

I uninstalled the driver and the associated programs (i.e. powerDVD etc) and then reinstalled them and then re-did the UDB connection to the computer - it auto-detected it, and then said new device ready to use (using XP by the way). Still didn't work for DVDs, just CDs. I also updated the driver - still nothing.

Under my computer it is listed as a DVD-/+RW, so I cannot understand why it won't play DVDs, just CDs. It's as if the ability to play/burn DVDs has suddenly be locked out.

Any help would be extremely appreciated! Thank you.

A:DVD-RW suddenly cannot read DVDs, can read CDs

The device manager says it's working properly.

The problems occured after attempting to erase a DVD+RW using Deepburner. Basically I burnt a DVD and then tried out Deepburner to see if it would erase the DVD+RW. When I attempted to eject the DVD it wouldn't eject- the green light just kept flashing a couple times. Eventually I had to turn my PC off and unhook the USB connection and power connection and then do everything back up and restart the computer. Finally the DVD would eject, but since then will not read any DVDs, just CD's and CD-ROM.

The model is an external (USB) Micro-Solutions 2244010 (but really a NEC_DVD-RW, ND-1300A).

I updated the firmware to 1.0A about 6 months ago. I never had a single problem with this drive before or after updating the Firmware.

I really have no idea how or why this could have happened. I can play the DVDs in my other DVD drive just fine.

Please help.

Tried doing a search for this and came up empty. My problem in a nutshell is that I'm having difficulty reading data CD's. I was re-installing my OS due to too much corruption of data and viruses so I'm start from a scratch in terms of OS files.

To be noted: Manufacturer's install disks used ghost to install a new copy of the OS. Had to open and close the CD drive bay a few times in order to get the final CD be able to be read and complete the installation.

What I've tried:
update driver - no improvement
Uninstall Drivers and restart - no improvement
manually download driver - no improvement
tried using generic CD Drivers - no improvement

OS: Windows XP home.
Downloaded all updates. inc: SP2
Emachine T3065
Memory: 2GB

After browsing around google for a while, I came across a similar problem which suggested the cabling might be the cause of the error. as audio/video are past through different pars of the cable than data.

Any help is appreciated.

A:Can't read data cd. can read audio

Ignore the cable issue, that's unlikley to be the problem
Analog audio is on a different cable, but thats seldom used by any PC these days.

The clus here is that it was dying at the end of the install by the sound of it. The laser output may have decreased to the extent that audio only is recognised due to the better reflectivity.

Start thinking about a new drive, but you would have checked all the cables anyway one assumes?

I have some older DVD-R that I had burned data on a few years ago. My Optical Drive on my main PC can't read them. but a drive on a different PC can read them fine.

My main PC can read all regular DVDs (i.e. movies) just fine. I cleaned the lens, deleted the "up/down" registry entries as recommended. Still no solution.

the only hint I have the explorer shows that drive with a symbol of 2 people (see attachment). not sure if this stands for some group policy.

All the data were burned with a different DVD-writer in Germany (some 9 years ago). i don't think it is a region setting issue since this DVD-drive can read original DVDs from all regions. But there may be another clue?
I read about how DVD-R degrade over time... but since my other PC can read them that likely is not the problem.

The only thing I haven't done that was suggested was the realignment. First, I never dropped it (it has been in my PC for years and that didn't move). Second, it seems to read normal DVDs fine. It was suggested if re-alignment really is necessary, other things are out of whack and buying a new one may be better.
I could buy a new one, but also don't want to be defeated by the machine. and the problem coudl be related to windows....

A:can't read burned DVD-R, but can read normal DVD

It is possible the DVD-R may be incompatible with your drive. You can search online for a firmware update for the drive. You can re-write to a compatible DVD-R on your other machine perhaps.

My CD-RW drive broke, and Dell replaced it with a new one for free (warranty).

However, the new drive is 48x read but the old one was 52x read. Will this have an impact on anything?

Also, I have 52x CD-R's. Will they work in a 48x drive?

A:Solved: Difference between 48x read and 52x read?

There will be no noticeable difference on anything. Chances are that the old one rarely, if ever, actually read at 52.

The 52x on the CD-R's is a measure of their sensitivity and shows the maximum speed that they can be written. Some CD's have a minimum as well, and that is usually more important if they are "high-speed" CD-R's since they won't write properly at very slow speeds. But your CD-R's will write fine at speeds between 4x and 52x, as a minimum range, so there is nothing to worry about.

I have 3 DVD-R disks with content (documents, graphics files, etc. ? NO VIDEO files) that was backed up from a previous computer. I cannot read (or even see) any of the content from these DVDs. I have an identical (type) DVD-R with video content, and it opens and runs just fine.

I have a Toshiba Qosmio and its DVD drive reads: DVD multi-recorder; DVD rewritable; CD rewritable. When I insert any of these 3 data DVDs, the DVD drive (F on my machine) that usually says ?DVD-RAM? next to the icon (in Explorer) now says ?CD drive? (although the icon itself says ?DVD-ROM? at the bottom of the icon). If I click on the F: drive icon, or attempt to ?open? files from the F drive, I get an error message that says ?F: not accessible. Incorrect function.? If I right click on the drive and go to properties, it shows that all the disk space is used (which should be correct ? each of the 3 DVDs should essentially be full of content), but I cannot see any of the folders or files on this drive, even when I click ?mixed media? as the file type to open (rather than video files). Again, inserting the exact same type DVD-R disk with video content into this drive works just fine.

I have attempted the same procedure on my Dell Latitude D600 (DVD drive reads: DVD-ROM; CD rewritable). The DVD drive in this computer shows up in Explorer as ?DVD/CD-RW drive.? I have a Memorex CD-RW 1x-4x 700MB/80minute and in the past have saved and updated files. Now for some strange reason I opened a file from the CD and after update I tried to save it back to the CD and I was told that the folder I tried to save it in was READ ONLY.

I searched HELP and the instructions they gave me were as follows:

In doing thiese steps it went well until I got in ACCESSORIES and there is NO WINDOWS EXPLORER

SO with the CD in the drive I selected the folder went to the GENERAL Tab and saw that the READ ONLY box was checked. I "unchecked it" but then got an Error Message stating that an Error had occurred and it wouldn't change the status.

In desperation I copied the CD Folder to the desktop and could then save the upfdated file.

HOW (If possible) can I re-format the CD so it will be R/W and I can put my folder back on in R?W status?

It is possible to format a blank CD-RW disc to use UDF packet writing. This will allow it to appear as a read/write disc. As far as I know, UDF packet writing is not built into Windows and requires third party software to format and write files to the disc. Windows XP may be able to only read files from CD-RW discs formatted and written by some UDF writing programs.

NOTE: UDF packet writing to CD-RW discs may not be 100% reliable and should never be used as the only method for storing irreplaceable files. Attempting to update, delete or add files at any time could cause any or all previous files to disappear without warning.

TLDR: I get the "A disk read error occurred" error but the system disk is readable and checks OK in the recovery USB.

So, I have two hard drives--a terabyte drive with some data on it and a smaller drive with the win7 installation on it--and a USB drive. I made the USB drive into a recovery USB using the instructions here Installing Windows 7 System Recovery into USB Flash Drive | Raymond.CC Blog with the addendum found in the comments. I made a system image of the smaller drive via the control panel and then put the image in the terabyte drive. I then replaced my smaller hard drive with a new drive of a comparable size.

In order to restore the drive, I booted into the recovery USB, formatted the new hard drive with ntfs, made it active, and ran
wbadmin start recovery -version:xxx -items:C: -itemtype:Volume -backupTarget:C: -recoveryTarget:

where C was the terabyte drive and D is the new drive. I may have the drives mixed up here, but I assure you I had them correct when I actually ran the command

After a reset, I got some generic error so I went back into the bios, and set the new drive to be at the top of all boot lists, and then rebooted. It was at this time I got the above error. I feared that my drive was actually DOA, so I booted back into the recovery. I did a D:;dir and saw that all of my old files did indeed exist, so I figure it was a boot issue. I ran the boot repair utility in the recovery menu and it said there were no errors and I should... Read more

It all started when I was defragging last night. I got a couple BSOD's while doing the defrag but idiotically I just ignored them, restarted my pc and continued to defrag. I try to go into safe mode but it freezes when loading drivers. I tried to do a repair with the Windows XP Setup CD but after it loads the drivers it goes to a BSOD with the following STOP message 0x0000007B. I've searched online for help and have used many utility cd's and diagnostic tools with no success (P.S. one of the utilities is a live cd and it BSOD's when starting up). One more thing I am finding all sorts of wierd files named "tfypnk", "rqyokv", "rundll32", and "ap9h4qmo". Please help me, thanks in advance. Here is my Hijack log

I don't know where to post this now. I have no clue anymore what is wrong with this system. With the money I have wasted into this thing I could have bought a top of the line gaming rig by now. But now its too late to just pull out and leave this thing alone.

Anyways suddenly I am getting this problem(problem number 156?).

This is how it started: I updated my video card drivers to the latest ATI drivers 9.12. I started playing the game DIRT2 for a couple hours. I finally closed down DIRT2 and suddenly I was getting this problem: The PC would get a split second freeze every couple of seconds. Along with this split second freeze is coupled with this High Pitched Looping sound like when a program locks up and you get that looping sound until you can close out the program. This freeze up is basically noticable in the form of the mouse freeze up for a split second, then it moves again and then split second freeze again.

Ok, that is just the start of the problems. I am also suddenly having random issues with connecting to the internet via my wireless. Before this problem occured I was able to connect flawlessly. My wireless adapter will be displayed as "Connected" as always but I cannot open a web browser page. My windows live was still connected for 10 minutes one time while I was trying to figure why I can't connect to firefox. Then suddenly windows live crashed!

I thought that my problems were coming from the faulty hard drive that I jus... Read more

Hi there,

I have an old Dell XPS M1530 and wanted to salvage the hard drive, buy an enclosure and use it as an external hard drive. This is what i typed in:

select disk 0
create partition primary
select partition 1
format fs=ntfs quick

Do i need to do anymore? or can i just put it in an enclosure and use it as a hard drive? and will i have the 320 GB on the drive to use?

A:Do i need to do anymore?

I think you are OK.

But I'd go back into diskpart and look at the results.

Probably with these commands

List disk (should show disk 0)
Select disk 0
List part (should show partition 1)
Select part 1

Do you see a part 1 with the expected size?

If so, you are good to go, but you can always recheck in Windows Disk Management after you get it connected.

I'm not sure, but I don't think you have to assign a drive letter in diskpart.

As the title says,

Where can I find XP these days?

I'm wanting to put it on the HTPC I'm building, simply because it's cheaper than Win7. Would prefer XP Pro for the IR support, but not neccesary. I'm working with a hauppauge HVR-1600-MC, it supports XP SP2 up through 7x64, so it's just a matter of price....

I know i could find Vista dirt cheap, but i wouldn't want it for the same reason as the next guy.

At the same time, I don't know if the board (GA-MA78LMT-S2) is supported by XP?

A:Where to buy XP anymore?

It is very expensive as it stands.

Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2: Software

Just type into google 'Buy XP pro' thousands of options.

Hi my name is Liryc and I'm new to this forum, and I am hoping that someone can really help me before I put a hammer to this computer cause its driving me insane. I have been having some problems with it. I recently found that I had a virtumonde virus on the computer, after speaking to the IT guys at my job they told me what to do to remove the pesky little problem. I thought that I did the right thing cause it started running instead of freezing on me when I turned it on. But what I realized is that now the computer is working alot slower than before. I ran Ad-Aware, and Spybot and they located some critical things on the computer. I also had a pop up about mdmcls32.exe. I checked on the computer to see what it was.. Found out that its a trojan. I'm just tired right now of all this crap. Can someone please help me. I've deleted some from the registry and I've ran Spybot more than 1 million times. I've been trying to get rid of this problem:

When my computer goes Idle my Connection drops.
I Just closed Firefox and my connection dropped.
It drops randomly and constantly ( weird huh ) every 20 minutes or random browser closes.
It happened about 4 or 5 months ago, then went about 2 or 3 months with out the problem, now its back!

My equipment:
HP Pavilion Desktop. Vista (forget the model)
Westell 2200 Modem
Linksys WRT54G2 Router (i don't use wireless)
Also i Use a wired Xbox 360

Here is the thing though:
When my PC drops connection I am still able to get online and play with my friends on Xbox Live, So I don't think it is the Modem or Router, it has to be a cord or my computer or something.. Anyway I'm getting really tired of it because every time i want to use my PC I have to reset my router to restore the connection. Anything helps!

P.S. Everything is Wired at ALL times and it Still says its connected but i cant get online, And when i go into my Status it says 356 Million Bytes received, i don't know if that means anything.

Hopefully someone can help me out because I am a novice when it comes to computer skills. In the last few weeks or so my internet has been acting up and keeps crashing on me witha message reading that I have had some serious error and needs to close, allowing me to report it to microsoft. I ran AVG 8.0 (Free edition)and Spydot. They seemed like they got rid of things and everyone was going okay but my internet was still acting up.

Now, in the last few days that problem has gone away but I believe have malware on my computer. I keep getting pop ups from avg saying trojans like Vundo.FJ and BHO.HYT are on my computer and should be fixed, which AVG supposably does.

Currently, I keep getting new windows of internet explorer opening, kind of like popups, that I never did anything to that are from really random sites. I am not sure how that helps but I figured I would throw it in here.

From my little knowledge of computers I used "run" with msconfig and noticed that in my startup it says that I have these three things that I know should not be there. They are:
1. ruyopaku
2. tukuhegu
3. hagijifa or metadomo (It keeps changing between the two for some reason)
They are all rundll32.exe, whatever that means.

This is what I did to get rid of it, besides running my two spy programs, so hopefully I didn't screw anything up.
1. I used "run" an went to services.msc to stop Backgroudn Intelligence
2. I used "run" to look at the registery edit... Read more

I have tech service through the ISP I have. I noticed that Chrome was running kind of sluggish and figured, since it was there, I contacted tech support. The tech removed Malwarebyte, Super Anti-Spyware, Advanced System Care, two registry programs I had and Baidu browser and Baidu Speed up. He said almost everything could be done with programs already available in Windows 10. He tried to show me but he was so darn fast I could hardly keep up. I told him among all the programs only Super Anti-Spyware found 470 tacking cookies! He said that it was OK and they were harmless and I could access them from another Windows cleanup selection. Are all these programs that are 3rd party out there junk? When I used them I found so many problems, weaknesses and vulnerabilities. But to have them be deemed mostly useless, he did say MOSTLY useless, I am really confused. Been messing with computers for over 20 years and always used 3rd party Virus, spy ware and optimization tools regularly. Are they just programs that cue into certain functions of Windows and isolate them to make a program that is already in Windows but makes it sort of a short cut or are they really valuable? I am reinstalling a couple of things the tech deleted whether he liked it or not. As for the rest, I just don't know.

Hello, I was giving my computer a general tidy up and it somehow caught WIN32\Gaelicum.A. This prevented me from doing anything but accessing safe mode. So i followed a couple of guides and through safe mode managed to remove the virus.
Overjoyed, I rebooted to normal mode and proceeded to log in. However after entering my password and attempting to log in i was logged straight out without so much as seeing my desktop. I also tried pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del twice and trying to log in via administrator. However the same thing happened.
So I thought right something has been added to my startup folder to log me out as i log in so i went to safe mode to try and remove it in that. But the same thing happened in that.
In a last ditch attempt to remove the suspected script from my startup i loaded up my Ubuntu live CD and accessed the folder through that. Only to find it empty of everything but the desktop.ini file.
I should say i have XP Home and no XP install CD or recovery CD because my OS came installed on the laptop from the manufacturer. And the recovery partition is also corrupted somehow so i cant restore. Any ideas on how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated as although I have all my important files backed up and i could use Ubuntu for most of my needs, I need access to XP as I am working on a project for school which needs to be completed by the start of term in august and there is no equivalent software available on Ubuntu.

A:Can't Log In to XP anymore

Hi and welcome

Sorry for delay. we're quite busy here.

Bad news I'm afraid....

Win32/Gaelicum.A is a nasty file infector. It is also network aware and can spread to other machines on the network.
Even though your antivirus program detects it and can quarentine/heal some of the files it will be near impossible to clean up entirely.

I suggest to take this machine off the network entirely untill you can either clean it or you re-install everything. Your other machines should be thourally checked by a couple good virus scanners too.

With a file infector such as this the only way I would trust the system is to do a full format/reinstall of your operating system and all your programs.
Even if antivirus can heal many; often the file is corrupted beyond repair and wont work after virus code is removed. You cannot even trust your antivirus program as parts of it will be infected as well.

I do not suggest backing up any of your programs because this virus looks for and infects all executables on all drives. Your backups will need to come from known good cds or dvds or re-downloaded from the internet.

Your documents, mp3s & pictures should be fine to back up.

Sophos description (they have different name)

If you don't have the resorces to format/re-install we can try & fix but I cannot guarenty our success or system integrety afterward.

Wish I had a better answer...

Hello Everybody!

First of all, sorry about my English!

So.. I have a super huge problem. My computer was working fine for like 2 years until Sunday. That's when I checked my computer and saw a message: Windows was unable to save file: D:/... etc.. (I'm sorry I didn't write it down.). It froze down. I couldn't do anything. I had to Reset the computer, but since that time the computer is unable to see my D: hard drive, which is a Seagate.

You should know my configuration:
I have a Compaq Presario SR1911X with 2 hard drives. One is for the Windows XP: Samsung SP2004C, the other one is for all my data (photos, music, emails, everything!): Seagate ST3200826AS. This is the one which is not working.

I took my computer apart and tried to change the cabels, just to see if it's a cabel problem. It's not. And I can hear that the HDD has power because it gives me the sound.. But the only problem, that the computer doesn't recognize it anymore.

Please Please Please people, help me!!!! I don't want to loose all my data, expecially my photos. Also, I don't have the money to get it to a data recovery comptany.

Thank you!

A:Can't see my HDD anymore!! Please Help me!!

It sounds like the hard drive died. Good thing you backed everything up, huh? Data you don't have at least 2 copies of is data you don't want to keep.

Is the drive even spinning? Did it make any noise before quitting? If there is no access at all, a data recovery company may be the only answer. But they can cost 1000's of dollars, too.

You could try some hard drive tests if they will run on it.

Free Hard Drive Testing Applications:

Manufacturer's Tests
Victoria for DOS
Victoria for Windows (Both versions of Victoria are among the best and most thorough tests available.)
HD Tune
CheckDisk 1.03 (Marks bad sectors as unusable.)
HDAT2 (Diagnostics and bad sector recovery)
MHDD Low-level Diagnostics
Bootable Hitachi Drive Fitness Test Floppy or CD Image (works on most drives)

Hi, welcome to TSF.

I'm currently at work so my assitance will be brief:

I want you to search for these files on your computer and make note of if they exist. If they do, we'll need to delete them in Safe Mode:

Enable the Viewing of Hidden Files, and then search:

Reboot your computer to Safe Mode and then delete any of those found above, includining this folder:

C:\Program Files\winupdates\

while in Safe Mode run HJT and fix:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdates] C:\Program Files\winupdates\winupdates.exe /auto

Reboot and report back with a fresh HJT scan.

Hello everybody,

This is my first post here, I got into a situation with my computer that I don't know anymore how to go on... hope I can get some help here.

It started when I was searching for a little freeware to change my desktop wallpaper automatically. After being redirected few times I found and downloaded "Desktop Wallpaper Timer 1.6.9.exe" (don't remember the web address, I was not attentive). I've scanned it with NOD32 and no threads were found.

After I tried to run it, a disaster began.

First I've noticed the message in the taskbar: "Your security center service is turned off" when I tried to turn it on again it was not possible. Says simply the security center service can't be started. I opened regcleaner by jouni vuorio to remove the new thing, under "software" was written that the FirstRRRun has been installed.

I removed it and than:
- NOD32 simply dissapeared - message: The program doesn't exist
- The same story with Spybot Search&Destroy
- Same with Registry Mechanic
- Not able anymore to connect the internet: "wireless wizard can not be started" (I'm writing this from another computer)

I tried to reinstall NOD32 - Not possible: Message "106 Error Occured while extracting archive file"

Can not reinstall spybot either

With another computer I've searched for AV programs like AVG free, Kaspersky trial, F-prot trial... None of them can be installed. All give messag... Read more

A:Don't know anymore...

Seems the problem has been resolved. I've used no-need-to-install AV Dr.Web. It found and removed 2 worms Win32.HLLM.Beagle. After that I was able to reinstall all programs and fix all other problems.

Here's the new log

I have XP Home and I recently updated Explorer to 7. I can't ftp anymore. When Internet Explorer checks my connection, everything is OK except my ftp. Where can I find a box to check or uncheck to solve this problem?

It started yesterday.

My Win. 7 occasionally froze. It was frustrating but I didn't think much of it.
Once, when it froze, I got frustrated and turned it off with the power button. It kept happening.

it was still happening, so i went into safe mode. I wasnt going to do anything, I just thought maybe going into safe mode and then restarting would help. i did, however, go to control panel --> system --> advanced system settings to adjust for best performance, because i thought it was a slow computer issue.

when i pressed 'advanced system settings', it said it wasnt found. huh. strange.
then i looked and saw that i couldnt open Windows Explorer either. I couldnt open ANY of my preinstalled windows programs (notepad, snipping tool, etc.)
this was in safe mode.

So I restarted and guess what, it was JUST LIKE IN SAFE MODE! before i went to safe mode it wasnt like that...
i have no internet connection either.

i cant do system restore because in safe mode it says there are disk errors and i should check but then it syas that it cant and it has to schedule for the next time i log on. so i log on (normally) but it never checks.

in normal mode i cant open system restore AT ALL.

also, in normal mode i can open cmd, but not as admin. says it wasnt found. so right now i cant do ANYTHING. I can, however, use the programs I installed (games, software...)

please help
this is urgent i dont know what to do

sorry for my english

My son has a Fujitsu Amilo laptop with a built in web cam.
Recently (much like my own cam on my Acer) it's just stopped working for no apparent reason.

The message he gets is that it can't connect.

Hope someone has a bright idea as I had no reply to my similar query. Now neither of us has a webcam.

Thanks everyone!

Alright, I've been having some trouble with this laptop.

I turn it on, no disk in the drive, and it eventually tells me: "Operating System Not Found!"

I tried putting in the restore disk and the OS disk to reinstall, but with either one, I just get a "No Hard Drive Found" message.

I really can't get any further than that. Any ideas, at all? All I know is: Things worked fine before he tried to clear some internet files (apparently).

Ok, so I'm trying to help a relative fix their computer. Problem is it's been nearly a decade since I've stepped e-foot on the internet. So heres the low-down. The computer in question runs remarkably slow, my old C64 has become a superior system. Opening programs takes forever, starting the computer takes forever. And apparently, theres a lot more nasty stuff out there to contend with. The user in question also frequents a website called pogo. Which to my understanding is most likely the cause of everything. All I've done is made sure that no extra programs are running at startup, and downloaded HiJackThis. To which I've included a log. If it was my computer, I'd just go along and delete everything that looks harmful and hope for the best. But since it's not my computer I gotta be careful. Figure I'd let someone who knows what their doing help me. Any and all help will be utmost appreciated.

A:No clue what to do anymore

The fact that Utorrent is in the list could explain why you are having troubles.
That is where viruses and things can come from.

Please open a command prompt by right clicking and choose
Run as Administrator
type sfc /scannow<enter>

This will check and fix the integrity of you system files.

Suddenly my c.d.'s do not load anymore. Not in Windows Media, nor in my PCDJ, etc. When I restart the individual programs the c.d. loads, but only once. (after which I have to restart again if I want to hear a new c.d.

Only my Real Player works partly. It also does not automatically reload new c.d.'s but if I manually delete the playlist and then press Play again it works. But this is not normal I reckon...

Can somebody tell me what the matter can be? (It's not as simple as to click automatic playing via computer - c.d. ROM device etc.)

A:c.d.'s do not load anymore....

Hi paulvangelder

. . . and Welcome to the Tech Support Forums.

Several things to check:
(You've already taken a good first step: you already checked on the "Autorun" setting for your drive)
1) If you can, borrow another CD (or DVD) drive (an external is a quick troubleshooter for this sort of thing). If everything suddenly works just fine with a different drive, it's possible that the drive had become faulty. (Could be something as simple as the lens needing cleaning, or the unit could be failing).
2) If the problem just recently started (and trying a different CD-drive doesn't help), try a System Restore, using a restore point from when the CDs were playing OK.
3) If neither of these work - make sure it's not malware corrupting system files (scan in both Safe Mode and Normal, and use as thorough settings as possible. If you find an infection, try the 5-Step Security Checklist here at TSF
4) If the system scans clean, try uninstalling Windows Media Player.
5) Run a Registry Cleaner (I recommend CCleaner
6) Disable any "Download Manager" software you might have, and download a fresh copy of Windows Media Player (you can do this in Windows Update -- which is a good idea anyway, since you should also check for Security Updates while you're there).
7) Install Windows Media Player & test to see if it plays CDs OK now. Then ... Read more

Used to be I was able to install a cd and it would prompt me to choose what to do with the cd, now it won't ask me anymore. I checked cd (drive) properties and it is still checked for "prompt me...". (see "registry problem cd drive...").

I did a google search and ended up checking my registry.

The first thing I noticed was this entry = see "registry editor snap1.txt"
and "registry editor snapshot 090406.jpg".

Then i copied and pasted the text file name (see "registry editor snap1.txt" into "Google" and got no results.

Then clicked on that 1st entry in with all the weird symbols and got this = (see registry unknown file.pdf).

Then clicked .

It appears I need to change my registry and delete this funky file in the editor (mentioned earlier).

I don't have a backup of the registry. I need help with how to go about getting this problem resolved.

Maybe I am on the wrong track all-together.

A:cd's won't autorun anymore

Do a System Restore.
