Installing RAM on Dell laptops - LAPTOP EXPERTS

Q: Installing RAM on Dell laptops - LAPTOP EXPERTS

I read the instructions for installing RAM on the Dell C810 Laptop, but am having trouble understanding them. I don't understand what they mean by disengaging the metal tabs. I've removed the screw, but the RAM cover still won't come off. The manual for this model is available by googling "Dell C810" "manual". I've had to service desktops in the past, so I know how to install RAM and how important it is to remove power. Do I have to remove the battery, too? The manual says that I do, but this also entails removing the keyboard and display.

In your experience, how different is it from installing RAM on desktop? Do any of you guys remove the battery before installing RAM or do you go strictly by the manual when installing RAM?

A: Installing RAM on Dell laptops - LAPTOP EXPERTS

Most laptops just have you remove a cover on the back and some have you install it under the keyboard. Maybe the cover has some additional metal tabs or clips that have to be retracted in order to remove the cover. I really don't think you need to remove the reserve battery. I never even take out the main power supply battery to change memory.

Dell admits installing security hole on laptops, apologizes, offers fix | Network World

Dell acknowledges a root certificate it installed on its laptops was a bad idea and is pushing a patch to permanently remove it.

In a blog post company spokesperson Laura Thomas says eDellRoot was installed as a support tool to make it faster and easier for customers to service the devices. But some of those customers discovered the certificate and recognized it as a serious security threat.

?We have posted instructions to permanently remove the certificate from your system here,? Thomas writes. We will also push a software update starting on November 24 that will check for the certificate, and if detected remove it. Commercial customers who reimaged their systems without Dell Foundation Services are not affected by this issue. Additionally, the certificate will be removed from all Dell systems moving forward.?

For those who don?t want to use the pushed patch, instructions for removing eDellRoot manually is a 17-step process that takes up 11 Word document pages, including screenshots. The patch - Click Here ? can also be downloaded.

What is the make and model of the Dell, do you have a Dell Asset tag #? Write that info down and go to a working computer with internet access and download the Ethernet driver for your computer from Dell onto a flash drive and install it on this computer. Once that is installed then you can go to the Dell Support site to download any other drivers your missing in the Device Manager (sound, Video, chipset etc) with this computer.

I am trying to install XP Pro to a Dell laptop.

For some reason, it will not accept the product key off the back of the laptop.

The XP Pro disc that I am using is NOT a Dell one, but should this matter?

I am basically stripping all of the Dell software off of the laptop and replacing it with a copy of XP Pro that has none of it.

The serial on the back of the laptop says "Windows XP Professional DELL".

I can't see why I would have to use a Dell disc rather than any XP Pro one?

Thanks in advance,

A:[SOLVED] Installing XP Pro to a Dell laptop...

You don't have to use the Dell disc, but the disc you use must be a OEM version to work with the sitcker key . . not a Full Retail or Upgrade version

I currently have a Dell XPS M1730 laptop that has been rendered useless with viruses. I wish to reformat/reinstall Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on it. My problem is that the original factory disc has been lost by the original owner. The original operating system on it was Windows XP and was upgraded to Win 7 Ultimate.

I want to download the drivers for the laptop from Dell's website but I am unsure if I should download the drivers for the XP version or the Vista version. There are no other driver versions available.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

When turned on it says that the primary disc not found. Then it goes straight to a warning screen telling you to go to setup. Looking at bios set up, the HD and optical drives are "not installed". Through Dell's chat line they said that both the HD and cd unit were defective. I could see the HD , but the CD too? They said that a operating system has to be noticed in order for the computer to work. Without a HD wouldn't the machine go to a doss prompt anyway? I tried that by removing the HD

Dell wants $168 for a HD which is nuts because online I can get one much less. My question is about the CD unit. Has anyone ever seen those go too

A:who knows their Dell Laptops?

The laptop could never go to a "DOS prompt" without the HDD, as to do so would mean that it would have DOS (not the case with XP) and if it had DOS, it resides on the HDD anyway.

Optical drives are not always shown (detected) in BIOS, but the BIOS boot screen should indicate their detection at boot time.

A faulty HDD electronics would prevent it being seen, but a fault on the Dell motherboard IDE would prevent both from being seen.

Edit: I'm marking things down in Update 1/Update 2/etc. Please read all to understand the situation!! Dire need of your help.

Update 4: After more resaerch, I've decided to upgrade my Bios from A04 to A09. No idea if it's had any effect.

Update 3: Did some research and tried switching the RAM, as people suggested. Nothing happened. Couldn't get computer to boot when pressing power, either (only the usual LED flashing.. and if you have an Inspiron, the '0' 'a' and 'down arrow' LED signifiers were all lit up, except the 'a' was flashing). Would power down after a minute (no sound of fan or disk drive running). Switched back the RAM. Got it to boot. I'm now scared to turn the laptop off again. Again, typing from the computer in question right now. So my thought now is: Is this a boot issue, not a power button issue?

Update 2: Got laptop to turn on, finally. It seems very rare that it will turn on/boot instead of doing the silly LED thing and shutdown. Like I said, usually the LEDs flash/stay constant for about a minute and then turn off (no reaction on screen). This time it decided to boot. What the heck?? Typing this response from the computer in question, right now. Tried pressing power to 'shut if off' while it was on, and it didn't do anything.

Update 1:

In the last 2 weeks I have installed over 10 Dell laptops with Vista Home basic/Home premium. I have encountered these 2 specific problems on most of them!.

1 - They all had a 60 day trial of Office 2007. Having entered the License Key and registered the product everytime I open an Office application from the Start Menu it trys to reinstall again. If I use the Dell Dock it does not happen.

2 - On most occasions when trying to open the control panel it does not respond forcing Windows Explorer to restart.

I have not had these problems on other makes.

Has anybody else come accross these problems?

A:Dell Laptops and Vista

Does registering the product = Office validation with Microsoft Genuine Advantage?

Do the events preceding the Windows Explorer restart process include the fading white background, small blue circle spinning and "Not Responding..."? If so look at 3rd party firewall/ a-v products. Usually the firewall is the cause.

All these symptoms - but only on Dell products?

Hi, i asked what i need to ask for at the Title
here it again "Is there a Win7 VER. especially for Dell Laptops or PCs"

A:Is there a Win7 VER. especially for Dell Laptops or PCs

There is, but you need to buy it from Dell.

When Dell manufacture a new computer they ship it with Dell Datasafe Backup software and as with most manufacturer's expect you to burn a set of recovery discs.

However, if you pay extra they will ship a windows DVD and driver DVD with a new computer.

My advice would be to contact Dell to see if they will sell you what you're after.

I couldn't buy a laptop for a while now since all manufacturer seem to force Vista, and don't offer any XP drivers on their website for their new models.

However, the new Dell inspiron models seem to fully support XP, as they're offering all XP drivers on their site. Anyone have experience with "refurbished" products from Dell? Particularly laptops? I have a friend that would like to get a laptop but has a pretty limited budget.

It seems like they have some good deals but I wonder about reliability.

A:Dell Refurbished Laptops

I find the refurb Dell to be a far superior buy than new. When you buy new you are often the first person to ever turn on the system, a refurb has been turned on and failed so it is sent back for extensive testing not done to a new system, after testing to make sure it works properly it is now sold at a good discount.

The refurb looks like new and has exactly the same warranty it just cost less. The only area where it is not a better deal is if you need some specific feature, you cannot order them built with extra parts beyond a few.

Dell gets so many refurbs that the best method for buying one is to know what you want ahead of time and what you are willing to pay for it, they have new systems come up for sale several times a day so if you have the time and know what you need it can be a very satisfactory system purchase.

Hi everyone--hope someone can help me with this one.

I've read the posts below on installing old hard drives in new computers, but they seemed to apply to desktops. I've got my hard drives from two old laptops; I'd like to know if I can use them on my new laptop. I've no real reason to access them, but it would be nice to be sure there is nothing I really want (the laptops with which they were associated died prematurely). I read something about changing master and slave jumpers, but I don't know how to change that, and I wasn't sure whether it was even possible or advisable to try this.

Alternatively, is there an external advice I can use to access these drives?

A:Installing old hard drives in laptops

 Hello & Welcome to TechSpot

Unfortunately, what you ask is not as easy as it sounds... Desktops are built to be easily modified with different parts of the shelf, whereas the notebooks are also modular, they often have different specifications for how things are connected...

It is possible to do what you ask, but it will require dismantling much more than you'd have to with desktops and might very well break your warranty.

Keep unpacking until you get down to a 2.5 disk, which looks (more or less) like a normal harddrive). Now you have to put that into a "container" with the correct connections for your notebook.

if you have a desktop handy, you should be able to connect them to that and check out the contents that way. It'll greatly reduce any risk of you doing something wrong with your notebook and is definately the way I'd do it...

Hope this helps

Hi all-

I have several users using Dell laptops (2 D820 and 1 D810). They normally use the laptop on the docking station and everything is fine. If they are undocked, the monitor of the laptop screen does not go to full size. You see about an inch dark border around the screen as opposed the screen being fully stretched out. This happens whenever the computer is not docked. Is there a setting that I need to look at to correct this?

I'm trying to locate the CMOS jumpers in/on my laptop (Dell Inspiron E1505), but I've only removed the keyboard so far, not the rest of the plate that covers the motherboard. I tried to find images of what exactly they would look like, but found alot of comments in reference to laptops "not having them"... but then again found some comments stating that "some laptops do".
Aside from calling Dell, does anyone know of Dell laptops having them? If so, where about? And should removing the plate covering my motherboard be safe if done with caution? Or is there something else I should know about removing that particular plate?

This is my first post on the tech spot....SO HELLO EVERYONE!!!! Like i said, this is my first post and really wasn't excatly sure where to put it. I figured this is a good a spot as any!!! OK at the risk of being called "YOU FOOL"! I'll come right out with it. I was sneakin this chick into my room and it was dark. I had my laptop plugged in across the room, the chick snags my laptop cord with her foot and yanks my laptop. Get up to use my laptop the next day and something's shorted out. I say shorted out because I've done some searching online with the problem i was having (power pack light goes out when plugged into laptop). So i go through the steps on possibly locating the short which was, pull off piece by piece from the laptop, which goes something like this....first cdrw, memory,HD and so on till I'm down to the laptop frame, which still the power up light turns off as soon as its plugged in. So before I go out and buy another mother board W/O CPU and RAM, i want to make sure of a couple things....Is this a common problem with maybe power jack needs to be resoldered or some other easy fix, and if I do buy a motherboard will my CPU work in the same D600 motherboard. What I'm getting at is swapping CPU a routine type thing? Also should I move this post to a heading that has more traffic?

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 and I believe the HD has went bad....or at least I think it has. I totally washed the HD clean with a program call Boot and Nuke. The reason for doing so was that the computer was having problem in all sorts of areas. Me being a worry wart, thought it was infected with a virus.

So anyway after wiping it clean I tried to install Vista. Before it will install it asks "Where do you want to install Windows?", and it gave me two options...Disk 0 Partition 2 or Disk or Partition 3 MediaDirect. When I highlight Disk 0 Partition 2 for the install location a message appears at the bottom of the screen saying..."The disk may fail soon. If other hard disks are available, install Windows to another location". Well I have no other locations so I tried it on this disk and it would only get to 2% on the Expanding files step. But instead of getting HD error message I get the following message...."Windows cannot install required files. The files does not exist. Make sure all files required for installtion are available, and restart the installation. Error code 0x80070003". I tried this 4 times, all with the same result.

So now I'm really confused as to what the problem is. Is the HD bad? Is the the Vista disk missing files? or is it both. If it is the HD, do I have to use a Dell HD or can I just go to Best Buy and purchase one there?

Any/all help would be greatly apperciated.

First off, not sure if this is the right forum, but I guess this falls under "hardware" so..

So here's my question..I love Dell computers. I've had a Dell Inspiron laptop for 4 years now and it works great. But it's only 1.1GHz so of course it's showing it's age so I'd like to get a new one. But here's the problem...Dell laptops only seem to go up to 2.3-2.5 GHz while brands like HP have laptops well over 3 GHz. What gives? Why are Dell's not up to speed with other brands yet, don't they want to compete with the market better? Cuz this is seriously holding me back from wanting to buy a Dell, or at least wait until they're as fast as HP etc.

I am trying to help out my family with this question: I was trying to connect a Dell Studio 1458 laptop to the internet that we have. There is NO router, only a modem so the ethernet cord hooks directly from the cable modem to the computer. The laptop has wireless and wired internet capabilities (supposedly). It couldn't connect to a wireless internet and it wouldn't connect to the wired connection either. I got the same thing every time "Unidentified network: no internet access" Upon troubleshooting I get this error: "internet IP address cannot be configured." It is almost like the computer is not allowing internet accessing.

The internet works fine because when tried on 2 other computers and everything worked fine. Ironically, this is also happening with my sister's Dell Inspiron laptop. Both computers have Windows 7 64x with Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet network cards. The driver for the network card was updated: no change. The device was disabled / enabled, no change. All firewalls and virus software disabled, no change. There are no detectable errors in the device manager.

I am running out of ideas on what could be causing the problem and how to fix it. I am thinking it has something to do with how dell has the computers set-up, because two new dell computers are having the problem; but I have no idea how to approach it. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

I have been interested in buying a 14 inch or 13 inch laptop, but I have some "must have"s before I am willing to buy it:
1) Matte screen (though this can be fixed with certain screen overlay products)
2) dedicated Page Up / Page Down keys (unlike, say, a Macbook, which requires the function key to be pressed along with the up/down keys)
3) Hard Drive Indicator light
4) Good sound from headphones (many computers have terrible sound with headphones, for some reason!)
5) Momentum/Inertia feature for the trackpad.
The Lattitude laptops I saw in microsoft store fulfill 1-3. But laptop makers today have this infuriating pattern to TAKE AWAY features. In this case, their touchpad driver had so many fewer features than older laptops. One must-have for me is the Inertia/Momentum feature, where if you make a flicking motion with your finger, the cursor continues to move, as if you flicked a trackball.
Does anyone know if recent Dell computers can be forced to use a different touchpad driver which has this feature?

Hello everyone,

Both the laptops Dell Inspiron 15R and Dell Inspiron 7548 came with 6 GB of RAM. I'd like to upgrade it to at least 12 GB by replacing the 2 GB dimms in both laptops with 8 GB dimms.

Was wondering whether it is safe and okay to combine different memory modules from different manufacturers.

I'm also leaving the US next week and so would prefer getting RAM that's more reliable and wouldn't mess up the laptops.

Could you guys please recommend which ones you'd get? I've bought Samsung and Crucial in the past and didn't have any issues.

Here's the existing RAM information from CPU–Z:

Inspiron 15R:

Inspiron 7548:

Based on the above information, could you please recommend the sticks that you would get, preferably from Amazon?

Dell's upgrade page for Inspiron 15R recommends this one:

Dell 8 GB Certified Replacement Memory Module for Select Dell Systems - 1600MHz LV SODIMM : Memory | Dell which is 1600 MHz.

So can I get this one for that laptop: Kingston Technology 8GB 1600MHz DDR3L (PC3-12800) 1.35V Non-ECC CL11 SODIMM Intel Laptop Memory KVR16LS11/8 at

This would match the manufacturer of the existing stick (Kingston).

Dell's upgrade page recommended the same stick for Dell Inspiron 7548 as well.

Since I wasn't able to locate Hyundai's 8GB stick, is it okay if I get Kingston or Crucial's stick:

I'm having a hard time trying to find a replacement right control key do 2-in-1 Inspiron 11 3153, but I saw somewhere a 3147 model keyboard that seems too similar the one I have so I wonder if is there a list of similar products that have the same keyboard as it would increase the chances I find the proper key.
Attached a keyboard's image from the model I have and the right control key no longer there grace to my little cat Nino. :)

My Dell laptop is just starting to experience internet connection problems.
I have had the unit for 2 years now. Within the last 2 months, it has started to play up. It will disconnect from the internet and the "Dell Network Assistant" will tell me that there is a problem with the home router. There isn't - my girlfriend is sitting next to me with her Dell laptop and she is surfing just fine.
Also. the 2 connection symbols for wireless connectivity in the bottom right hand corner will say that I'm connected, but the dell network assistant will say disconnected, and I won't be able to connect.
I guessed that it must be some connection settings but after trying as many as I could (I'm no IT genius but I'm fairly savvy) I couldn't fix it.
So I recently phoned Dell support and as my warranty has expired, it cost me £30 for them to (as I suspected...) remotely adjust some settings. I asked what settings they were adjusting but they wouldn't tell me - I had to buy a new warranty for £190 if I wanted the work done for free.
This fix they did lasted about a week - now the same problem is back and I don't want to give them another penny.
My firewall settings seem fine although if I reset them to default settings, I get about an hour of internet connection clarity before it starts to happen again.
Any ideas anyone??
Many thanks for reading!

Both machines are virtually identical in the problem. They Related to dne2000.sys Network Enhancer from Deterministic Networks.. It is over 3 years old and cant possibly work in win 7. I would update to a win 7 compliant version or remove it completely.

if you own a dell studio xps 1340 and either subscribe to computrace lojack for laptops, or it came bundled with your computer , you might want to know that either the bios agent in this computer is either missing or actually broken. when activating computrace in the bios, it is actually doing nothing.
some time ago i upgraded to wirdows vista utiltmate from home premium . this is when my laptop stopped contacting the monitoring center for 30 days.
i reinstalled computrace and started contacting the center.
when i called for support. they informed me that although the m1330 has the bios agent, they say that the xps 1340 is not on thier list of supported machines.
i opened up my dell xps 1340 and put in a spare sata drive and wiped it, and used the windows vista cd that came with the computer and installed vista
after creating a user name. and rebooting a couple times. i see no evidence that the bios agent actually reinstalled it. when computrace is working
you should see their process running in task manager. after wiping the hard drive, the computrace installation did not automatically recover.
if you got computrace either bundled or purchased seperately, you should be aware of this, in case your xps 1340 gets stolen. it may never come back.
i tried calling the xps support team today, but after discussing it. they have no idea what im talking about or how to contact the bios team
the bios version used for the test was A07

A:dell studio xps 1340 and computrace .lojack for laptops , warning!

comptrace lojack says:
There is nothing wrong with the Lojack for Laptops license on your machine. It is successfully installed and it is communicating with our monitoring center. The Computrace agent which is embedded on the BIOS of specific makes and models of machines is not included on your machine so the fact that the Computrace agent is not reinstalling LoJack after a hard drive format is normal for your machine. The only problem with your machine is simply the Computrace appears on the BIOS which has lead you to believe that your machine is equipped with Computrace. If you are looking for a machine that is equipped with a Computrace agent, I would recommend getting this machine replaced with a machine that is equipped with one. Pretty much any of the Dell machines that are listed on the absolute website will be equipped with a Computrace agent.

HARDWARE AND OTHER THINGS FIRM Dell has been accused of shipping laptops that come installed with a rogue piece of software that could be as bad as the one at the centre of the infamous Lenovo/Superfish scandal.
Lenovo had a tough time explaining away Superfish. So far Dell has not commented on the accusation, though we have asked it for a statement. It is accused, via Reddit, of shipping an eponymous root certificate and private key called eDellRoot.

Another article from The Register

The rogue root certificate in new Dell computers – a certificate that allows people to be spied on when banking and shopping online – will magically reinstall itself even when deleted.
El Reg can confirm that the eDellRoot root CA cert, discovered over the weekend, automatically reappears when removed from the Windows operating system. We tried this on a Windows 8 Inspiron 15 series laptop that was bought in July this year for our San Francisco office.

A:Dell is shipping laptops with a free Superfish-like problem:The Inquirer

Dell has released a statement regarding this matter along with instructions to remove it.
We have posted instructions to permanently remove the certificate from your system here. We will also push a software update starting on November 24 that will check for the certificate, and if detected remove it. Commercial customers who reimaged their systems without Dell Foundation Services are not affected by this issue. Additionally, the certificate will be removed from all Dell systems moving forward.

Here's my problem:
My UH572 can't detect the 32gb iSSD i100 by Sandisk through BIOS, thus, can't use iSSD as primary boot device or for fresh OS install. No options to tick or enable/disable through BIOS.
Searched google but to no avail.

Through Windows Installation Menu
Drive 0: 500gb hitachi HDD
Drive 1: 32gb iSSD

Through BIOS:
Drive 0: 500gb hitachi HDD

Weird thing though, iSSD can normally boot if there is a bootable USB (with Windows OS on it) plugged in.
I've tried with easy2usb's "boot to first HDD" option and it works. I've tried with a Win10 OS and rufus bootable usb > clicked repair windows > Continue with Windows 7/8/10 and it works as well.

Temp Fix I did was:
plugged in SD card with easy2usb boot on it.
always had to manually navigate to the "boot to first HDD" option to be able to boot using iSSD. (even if it is not the first HDD. It might mean first bootable HDD )

Can someone help me create a DOS command that I can use for my bootable SD card. A command that can run automatically without me pressing anything. Not sure if it's possible but I want to use the SD card as a bootable USB device then put the DOS command that will run automatically during start up and boot to the First bootable HDD, just like the option on the easy2usb menu.

Appreciate your inputs!

Just bought an Inspiron 5759 from Dell Canada.
Touchpad is very squirrelly - move around and it randomly perceives a click hence starts moving or invoking stuff.  Try to click left or right button (bottom left or right of touchpad) and the cursor moves so I can click on wrong thing easily.  Looked for Touchpad settings under Control Panel Mouse.  Nothing there specific to touchpad - just generic mouse settings.  Looked in Device Manager - Mouse and Pointing Devices - see HIID compliant mouse and PS2 compatible mouse.   Driver for either is from Microsoft dated 2006.
Ok - load newest driver from  Claims it installs ok - wrong.  The Dev Mgr shows same Microsoft drivers.  Manually force driver to Synaptics - Dell TouchPad.  Looks like it succeeds.  Now, Dev Mgr shows two mouse devices: Dell Touchpad and PS2 Compatible mouse.  Try control panel - Mouse.  Now I see a Dell Touchpad tab but the only field - Change Dell Touchpad settings - does nothing.
Spent 6 hours trying to get help from Dell Support - worst experience with any support organisation (other than HP who managed to toast a notebook via remote control while trying to install a printer driver - never did work.)  Absolutely no improvement in situation.  Four times put on hold and line drops.  Considering strongly returning the notebook.
Went to BestBuy and looked at 8 Inspiron  and XPS computers on demo.  Not a sin... Read more

A:Inspiron and XPS laptops running Windows 10 cannot install Dell/Synaptics Touchpad driver

With Win 10, touchpad drivers are found in the Win 10 Settings, selected in the Start Menu. In addition, many newer laptops are using a Precision touchpad, a Microsoft inspired pad. The driver is incorporated in Windows itself, and a regular driver will not work. This is why you don't see anything in the "old" Windows Control Panel app or in the Device Manager.

One for all you "Experts"

Hey all, I'm new around here, and I joined because I have bad computer trouble, and maybe someone could identify my problem. The other day, I opened up my computer to put a stick of 512 Mb DDR Ram into it, and i found two 128 Mb DDR sticks already in there. So I took one of the 128 Mb Chips out, and put the 512 Mb in, mixing them up with each other. Anyways, when I turned on my computer to boot it up, it made a bunch of wierd noises, like beeps, so I turned it off fairly fast. I took out the 512 Mb and put back in the old 128 Mb stick. Now whenever I push the button for my computer to come on, It will only make a long beep, pause for a second, then keep making the beeps, over and over again, the screen does not light, the LED stays orange. If anyone could help, anything is appreciated, Thanks.

A:Installing new memory module (One for all you "Experts")

Take out all the sticks of ram, and then out in the 128 and 512. Be sure to take all of them out first though, and they are pushed ALL the way down, it requires some force.

What I do is, line up the RAM with the slot, then just push down hard on the ram until the clips at the side automatically come up and clip the ram into place

Hello to all,   I recently did a clean reinstall of Windows XP (Home) on my Dell Dimension 2350. All went fine. Now I need to install the correct drivers. I have the Dell Resource disc and this is where the problem starts.    As noted elsewhere, after the reinstall the screen display of the Resource disc is as it would be in "Safe Mode". I was aware of this. As such, the Resource disc Search Criteria screen was a bit larger than the monitor screen. I was able to size it to fit the screen but this is really not the problem it is the following: The Search Criteria options I have from the drop down menus (on screen) are as follows:System Model:   All, Dimension C521, DXC061, Dimension DXP0G1, Dimension E521, DM061, XPS710    (Which, if any, do I pick?)Operating System: (I think I got this one)   All, Windows XPTopic:   (Maybe this one too)   All, Applications, Dell Diagnostics, Diagnostics, Drivers, Utilities   For the life of me I cannot figure out the exact drivers I am to install*. Windows XP only appears in the Operating System menu. I pretty much know the install order but as I said, I'm a bit confused about selecting the correct drivers from the disc. This computer is not connected to the internet at the moment so I can't download and use any sort of driver detection program. Other searches have confused me further and have provided no specific answer to this problem.&nbs... Read more

A:Installing drivers after Windows XP reinstall on Dell Dimension 2350 using Dell Resource disc

You need, in installation order:

Chipset driver
Video driver (depends on which video card)
Audio driver
Network driver (depends on which you have)
Modem driver, if you use a dialup modem

Go to the Support page and put in your Service Tag. It should give you the drivers you need. You can download them on any PC and copy onto a USB stick for installation on the 2350.
You only need the applications, if you actually use them (eg, Roxio, Jasc Paintshop, etc).
Then install your antiviral software and get online to the Microsoft Update site for all the patches and updates.
Keep in mind that XP is no longer supported by Microsoft and they stopped releasing security fixes for XP and IE9, more than 1 year ago. So they're both full of security holes and put your personal data at risk.

First I set up a Home Group with all the laptops. That didn't work.

Then I tried leaving the Home Group and just using the Network behind the router's firewall. Still nothing.

Last I created a new Work Group with all the units in it. Nothing.

That is because you have to go back through the setup for the new printer. Set up in the printer menu the SSID & Passphrase for it to connect to the network. Then all computers should see it. You do not need it connected to any computer with the USB, after you set it up to be on your wireless network.

Over the last 2 days I have been having a problem as indicated in the title of this post. The fault has rectified itself 3 times, but again today, it is back to "battery plugged in, not charging." As I am running the laptop (Windows Vista Home Premium; 32 bit) on the adapter without problems, I assume that the adapter itself may not be faulty.
I also have a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop running Windows 7.  Can I safely use that adapter with the Vista laptop, without causing damage to the Vista ?  If it is safe to do so, and the battery on the Vista starts charging, then it would indicate that the Vista adapter/charger has some kind of fault.
Hoping someone can give me some guidance. Thanks.

A:Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. Battery plugged in not charging. Can I use adapter from a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop ?

If the adapter has the same plug and the same or higher power rating, you can swap them.
Check to see whether the 1545 recognizes the AC adapter or whether it shows unknown (F2 at powerup).  If it shows unknown with two different adapters, you have a bad power jack or a bad mainboard.

Hi all!

I'm having a bit of a trouble with my eMachines netbook M250. I was going to contact their customer support, but for some reason their services kept telling me that "That serial number is not in our database".
I'm hoping you guys can help me!

I have 3 laptops and a desktop PC. Two of my laptops are connected through wireless and my Desktop PC through a cable. Now this small isnt finding the wireless network my other computer are connected to. It has found all other wireless networks, tons of them (neighbors, city wifi, etc), but just cant find my home wifi.

I have reinstalled windows XP and reinstalled the wireless drivers. Also checked that they're the newest out there.

EDIT: I found a solution to this problem. Once I changed the Channel Selection settings from my router from Auto to 1 (out of 13), My laptop could find the wifi!
After changing it back to "Auto" it loses the connection to the wifi. The "Auto" selection chooses channel 13, which is the channel with the least noise, according to the channel scanner of the router.
Is there any cause to worry that I have chosen Channel 1? Why cant my laptop find the wifi when the router is set to Channel 13?

A:One Laptop can't find home WiFi, All other laptops can

the US are only allowed to use channel 1 to 11 and some machines sold still have that restriction - Europe can use 1-13 - hence the router is switching to 13

there maybe a setting in the wireless adapter properties to allow you to use channels 12 & 13 (Japan are allowed to use 14)

goto device manager and network adapters and right click on the adapter - choose properties and see if anything there helps

Lets see the wireless networks and channels in use - use xirrus and post a screen shot

channels 1, 6 and 11 are the most common used, as they do not overlap - so wee need to look at signals greater than -80 and see what channels are in use around you

Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply

We purchased 3 x Blue HP Stream 11 laptops in December 2015 for our sons. Long story short 1 week ago the mouse stopped working on son 1's laptop - when you get to the sign in page (for the password) the mouse moves. Once you're actually into the desktop it freezes and will not move what so ever.  So we have no idea how to fix this. 2 days ago. Son 2's laptop did exactly the same thing. This is now 2 of 3 laptops that are not working.  - These laptops have antivirus, we monitor their usage so there's nothing untoward with the actual laptops. 2 weeks after receiving these laptops in 2015, the wireless adapter disappeared completely in the third laptop so clearly this is a Stream laptop issue????  Is there any way to fix or resolve the mouse issue for the other 2 laptops?

One is Windows Media xp and is built in other one is also xp but doesn't have built in wifi and I broke my netgear adapter so unable to connect. We run off the internet wifi offered free from where we live so how do I solve this issue??? p.s. no modem or router available to use and I am homebound/disabled....can someone walk me through the steps of creating a network for home and whatever else I need to do to fix this ?????? Thanks!!!

A:Help!! Connect 2 laptops directly w/ethernet w/1 laptop wifi

After connecting them together by ethernet enable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on the wireless connection that has internet access. You can probably also bridge the wireless and ethernet connections, but to say that I'm making the assumption that you are not restricted to only one IP address on your free Wi-Fi. I haven't given any more details, since I assume this will jog your memory of which you did yesterday.

I don't know if its the laptop or if it has to do with the router but it seems that Apple laptops always interfere with my wifi connection.

My brothers Mac does it when we both visit home and my girlfriends roommates mac always kicks both of our laptops off the wifi. After a few minutes it will let us connect back up but then dies out again after a few minutes.

I assume it has to do with the laptops because neither my brother or the roommate seem to have the problem and it only happens when they are online.

Anyone Know whats up?

Thanks All!

Here's a thought. I've been searching high and low for an affordable laptop which has

Awesome Graphics card (not sure what - but something that could handle Crysis at high)
15-16" screen with 1920 x 1080 res
4gb or more ddr3 1333mhz ram
core i7-720qm or higher processor
backlit keyboard
HDMI, long battery life, etc etc

So basically everything but at under $2500. I even bought a dell studio xps 1645 with the above specs and the price was real good ($1730 with student discount) but it had lots of problems so i had to return it.

Now that the problem is solved (? maybe?).. dell dont offer that laptop in that configuration, making the laptop around $2400 just due to an increase in RAM (6gb instead of 4gb).

And since I am unsure of the quality with dell or any other brand for that matter, I was wondering if there is any laptop out there that gives alienware m15x performance for a smaller pricetag? (a discount coupon for the above would do! hehe)

If not, what about "overhauling" or "Pimp My Laptop" sorta stuff if you catch my drift... You know customizing the laptop or even building it up from scratch.

I've done some basic upgrades in the past (RAM HDD, bluetooth card etc.) but does anyone have any experience in upgrading graphics cards, screens and CPU's?

Any experience or information about this is very welcome, as finding the right laptop in the right price is sorta like the Holy Grail of laptops, especially in NZ s... Read more

Hello all and welcome to my new thread. I may not necessarily call myself an expert. Although I do consider myself a moderate user. I started with computers from my dad when i was about ten. He taught himself and then he taught me by getting me to take a pc apart and put it all back together again. Since then I have taught myself and surpassed my father by miles. I have not had a single IT class and I am only 19. But I do know that I am up there because I had a computer class and my teacher had his A+ and N+ and I was showing him what to do. not only that but I find myself able to talk with admins who do this for a career and sometimes talk with people who work for microsoft and be able to understand what they are doing. However that being said I am far from an expert. I know that there is much to learn and no matter how much you know there will always be someone smarter than you. and now thats why I am posting this thread. I am all about learning new things and I actually use my pc more for learning than i do for using the web and playing games. and so i am looking to learn more but I feel I have reached a level where I am out of ideas on what to learn next. I think that I need to talk with some of the experts online and this looks like the place to start.
so this thread is for tips, tricks, and new things to learn and tryout. I am hoping this thread becomes popular because i wish to learn as much as i can.

here is my first tip.

We are Dell resellers and had placed an order for 43 Laptops - Dell Latitude 3560 with Dell on 13th June, 2016. We delivered them to our customer on Friday 17th June, 2016. On Monday 20th June we discovered that all the Laptops are faulty and are not functioning properly. They have not been able to use a single system due to touchpad issues in the entire lot
We have made innumerable calls Dell to resolve the problem, but the team is unable to identify and rectify the problem.
We have spoken to our partner account manager, regional account manager, Service Specialist and Escalation Team, requesting them to provide us with a solution at the earliest as their work is getting hampered. Our customer has to deploy the same by 1st July however they do not have any Dell Laptops functioning correctly.
How do we escalate this to the Dell management and get a replacement ASAP

A:Who do you contact if the DELL India Escalation and Support Team fails to provide support for brand new Laptops

I am running an ageing ACER travelmate laptop with Win 7 Pro SP1 (up to date with updates).

Yesterday I accidentally spilled some tea on the keyboard. I quickly followed procedure: I powered down, took battery out, dried the keyboard - first with absorbent tissues and then with a hair dryer.

I logged in. No problem booting up - up to the login window. I could not login because the keboard is not responding. Keyboard (most keys, except on the extreme right) are non-responsive. I managed to login via the virtual keyboard. I have no problem with the mouse or any mouse operated functions.

Right now I am working via an external (USB) keyboard. When I go to 'Control panel' > 'keyboard' all the vital signs are normal, eg, driver, launch manager are shown as functioning normally.

What can I try next to get back the laptop keyboard functionality back?

A:Laptop keyboard stopped working -spillage [moved to Hardware>Laptops]

Not much as the "spillage" has pretty much ruined the keyboard. Depending on your repair ability, you could order a replacement for it and do it yourself or take it to a repair shop for replacement. But the bottom line is; it has to be replaced.

We just set up our Dlink router and all computers and iPhones can connect to the wireless fine, but one of the computers is showing "local only". What gives?

A:Access shows Local Only on one laptop on DLink network. All other laptops can connect

Don't know...
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Alright I recently did a reformat of my girlfriends harddrive for her dell. To make things simpler I just popped her hd into my system as a slave and installed a Non-Dell Windows XP Pro onto the drive. I figured that'd be all I need to get the system up in working order so that I could pop it back into her case, boot up, and reinstall all of her drivers and what not. Unfortunately I keep getting a "Failure to Boot" screen whenever I try to power up the machine. Any ideas?

Hey, im having some issues. I have a DELL inspiron 5100 laptop and i just recently removed a virus that almost destroyed my hard drive, I got it to work fine but after a few days of use it started to freeze up on the DELL loading screen on the start up, i accidently pressed the F12 key and it took me to a screen with different ways to start up XP, like through the Hard drive or a disk.
i selected to run offthe hard drive and it froze up any help?

A:[SOLVED] Dell inspiron 1500 laptop freezes after DELL loading screen

hi, after you hit F12 did you see the diagnostics program at all? Ordinarily I would say It may be worthwhile running a scan on the hard drive if you can. But, I see you removed a virus, can you tell me if it was with the help of the antimalware section on this forum? or did you just remove it yourself? I need to know if you are absolutely sure you removed all traces of the virus - if you had the help of a forum they would have given you the "all clear". Have you tried starting in safe mode at all?

Hi, I had a GPU fail in my Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. The card that failed was an NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS. The Vostro laptop actually can accept an NVIDIA 8600 GT card too. So I ordered the replacement part from Dell for the 8600 and they shipped me a refurbished unit.
The surgery to put in the new card took all night for hack like to do. I did not look carefully at the refurbished unit they shipped me as I was nervous handling the card (that I might break it).
But when I turned on the laptop after the installation, I did not get a pause at the BIOS saying “I see new hardware” like I did when I upgraded the RAM.
After the computer booted up I uninstalled the 8400 driver and then installed the 8600 driver. There was a snag at it’s possible that Windows automatically reinstalled the 8400 driver during one the required reboots but I KNOW that I wrote the 8600 driver over top at least (I had hoped to do a clean uninstall then reinstall but Windows tried to grab a driver for me).
So now when I right click on computers, properties device manager it shows the video as still the 8400 card. The 8400 card I removed has a sticker on it that says KU907 on it. The invoice for the 8600 that Dell sent for the 8600 says KU907 on it too.
I think I was sent the wrong part from Dell (I paid a higher price for the 8600 GPU) . Is it possible that a legacy driver is making the Vostro think it has the 8400 when the part IS an 8600. Or when I go to the Device Manager, does the computer physically c... Read more

Hi there. I bought a Dell Inspiron 17R-5720 back in September 2012, and have been having this issue pretty much since I bought it from Amazon. The computer is running Windows 7 64 Bit, 6 GB RAM, Intel Core i5-3210M @ 2.50 GHz. I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed and run scans regularly.

Pretty much what happens is that the screen will turn to colored static, and the computer will be unresponsive. In order to make the machine usable again the power button must be held down and the computer restarted. The odd thing about it is that it almost always happens when I am in the process of moving the laptop from one place to another. For example moving the computer from my lap to the table next to me. It has happened once or twice when I just touched the computer while it was on the table next to me. A few times the screen just turned black.

Since it is still under warranty, I called Dell support and they sent out a technician, who didn't seem to do any sort of troubleshooting. He replaced the motherboard and the LCD display. This of course did not fix the problem, so I called Dell again. This time, they had me send the computer to them. They received and sent it out the very same day, again, it doesn't seem that they did any real troubleshooting. When the same malfunction cropped up again, I of course called Dell and they said that when they received the laptop there was some sort of cable inside that was "loose", so the connected this cable and sen... A:Dell Laptop, Display Turns to Static/System Freezes, Dell Can't Fix

The technician Dell sent came to my house today. He replaced the motherboard (again), the LCD screen (again), and the hard drive. Fast forward five hours later, and guess what? The problem still hasn't been fixed. I just got off the phone with Dell support, of course their first suggestion was to send the computer in again and have them "fix" it. It took about an hour of going back and forth being on hold/arguing before they finally said they would "elevate" my case and and have someone call me on Monday to discuss it. I think I've given them plenty of chances to solve this, now I just want a replacement computer. Though with their track record, I'm not holding my breath. I'm even doubting that I'll get a phone call.

Does anyone think that this is power supply related? Not the power cord itself (I've used two different cords), but whatever is inside that powers the system. Sorry, I'm not that computer savvy.

When I attempt to start my laptop it goes to the Dell logo screen and will not boot Windows 8. Any suggestions?
I've had the computer less than a month and if I have to restore the system completely it will not cause much of a problem.

A:Dell Laptop w/ Windows 8 won't boot past dell logo screen

Hello Univers789,
Re-installing windows is the last resort. So before doing that, you can try the steps mentioned below which might fix the issue. 1. Restart the laptop and start tapping the F2 key at the Dell logo for enter the BIOS. 2. Navigate to the “Advanced” menu. 3. Change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from Intel Smart Response to AHCI. 4. Press F10 to save changes and exit. 5. Reboot the system. 6. Go back into the BIOS by tapping the F2 key and change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from AHCI to Intel Smart Response. 7. Save changes and exit by pressing the F10 key. 8. Reboot the system and it should boot normally into Windows. In case the above steps don’t fix the issue, run the Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA / ePSA) Diagnostics. Run the test and check if gives any error code. Note down the error code and update me with the same, would let you know the next course of action. Please write back with results.

My home desktop is connected to a wireless router through AT&T U-verse and it's broadcasting just fine. I can see the name and everything when I try and connect on my laptop but there is always an error that brings me to a troubleshooting screen. I've made sure the password is correct by going to Start-Run, IPCONFIG and then typing my IP address into the address bar in my browser. I dont know what else I can do, I feel like I've tried everything! Help please.

A:Laptop (Win7 Dell Inspiron 1525) won't connect to desktop (XP Dell) wireless router

Sometimes, you need to replace the router.
Sometimes, you can call your service provider and ask them to take a look on line to see if the subscription needs to be refreshed.
But often, all that is needed (despite the fact that it is a lot of work) is to uninstall your existing system, then reboot, and reinstall everything.
You might also find success by looking at your device manager in Windows to see if you have any grey, red, or yellow flags by any related device. That may show you have a permanent hardware failure if you cannot restore it, then you are off to the store or your provider for a new cable modem or router.

I want to switch between 2 laptops onto a DELL E178FPc Monitor (which is VGA input only).  The Laptops are a DELL E6410 -VGA out only, running Win7    and  a DELL Inspiron 5000 series machine -HDMI output, running Win10.
I have tried to achieve this using a KVM switch (the ATEN CS22U, non-powered). It claims to be Win7 compliant.
When I connect it to the E6410's VGA port and then in to the Monitor it says 'no signal detected'. Subsequent research would suggest that even if I were to somehow get a display through the KVM switch it will be lost as soon as you switch to the other laptop (!).
I have come to believe through research on the web that the E6410 Laptop will only work with a VGA monitor being directly connected to its port, or an alternative (powered) KVM Switch with so called Active-DDC (whatever that is!) may also work.
Needless to say I have exhausted my tech knowledge on this one.
Can anyone offer further advice or recommend a solution?

When I try to boot up, the dell logon screen comes on for a second along with the progress bar at the bottom of screen, the progress bar does not fill with the color and the dell emblem goes away..... the circle of dots that should spin also does not spin anymore, just a black screen

A:Dell Laptop will not finish Dell logon screen

Hi Raymond2013,
I will recommend you to run the diagnostics on your system to check the hardware functionality:

Restart your system and keep tapping 'F12' as soon as the Dell logo appears.
Highlight 'Diagnostics' using up/down arrow keys and press enter.

Please let me know if you get any error code/message.
In case the diagnostics pass, try to boot your system in ‘Safe mode with Networking’ from Advanced boot menu and see if it works:

Restart the system and keep tapping 'F8' as soon as the Dell logo appears.
Highlight 'Safe Mode with Networking' using arrow keys and press enter.

Note: If your system has Windows 8, F8 key will not work to bring up Advanced Boot menu. Try to boot your system for 3 times and it will automatically bring up the Advanced Boot menu.
Keep me posted. Please reply for any further questions.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.  Recently, I bought a Dell Ultrasharp monitor U2412M to attach to my laptop to have an ergonomic home office.   My knowledge of computers/hardware is pretty... rudimentary.
24"1920 x 1200Nice adjustable stand1x DVI-D port, 1x display port, 1x VGA port, 1x USB 2.0 upstream port, 4x USB downstream ports
I use my computer for writing documents, internet surfing, and rarely for watching tv.  Eventually, I will buy a lighter and newer laptop, but probably not for a year or two.
I think I bought the wrong monitor....  I was hoping to buy something to use now, that will last, and that will work with any future laptop I buy.
My monitor just arrived.  I connected it to my laptop with the VGA cable (my laptop doesn't have DPI or HDMI input).  It worked, but the picture didn't look.... very good.
It is my understanding that VGA connections are the worst quality.  Can I use an ?adapter to connect to the VGA cable to access the DVI-D port on the monitor?  Or is this the best I can get?  I'm not even sure what ?video cards are, or whether I need one of these.
I also looked up the specs on my old laptop and it says the specs of my laptop screen are
1366 x 768 pixel
So is this the limit of what an attached monitor can be?

Any input appreciated.  Thanks.
