3GB switch will not switch back, vista 32!

Q: 3GB switch will not switch back, vista 32!

Hello all

I just installed 4GB ram on my 32 vista and it only recognized 3GB in the os (vista 32) and all 4GB in the bios. so I decided to use the /3GB Switch, by using that command in bcdedit, it all worked good. The problem is now I have 3069 mb physical memory and ONLY 209 mb Kernal Memory!!! so I used the "bcdedit /deletevalue IncreaseUserVa" and bcedit said it worked successfuly so i restart my pc and it STILL had the same memory! so right now im stuck with only 209 mb Kernal memory! any ideas on how to fix this? I looked all over google and found nothing. Should I keep these settings or try and fix it?how do i fix it?

A: 3GB switch will not switch back, vista 32!

I am not too familiar with those commands you speak of, but I do have a question: Is the video card built into the motherboard? If so, what amount of system memory is being shared with it? Besides that, I have no more ideas to offer you. Sorry

Hi folks! This problem is driving me crazy! Mine is a Dell laptop which had XP home edition. Two weeks ago I switched to Vista only to find out that it's incompatible with some of the programs I use, sometimes doesn't recognise my DVD drive, and causes other problems. I want to get rid of this stupid OS. I first tried to uninstall Vista but it's nowhere in the system! Neither is XP. Then I tried over and over to reformat the hard drive so I could reinstall my XP disk. But I'm getting the message that I couldn't do so because the system is "write protected." I did a Google search and found out that Microsoft has created problems for reversion from Vista to XP. I called Mocrosoft teck suppport and they said my warranty covers only the hardware, and that they could help me out for a charge of $129. I would greatly appreciate your help.

I had windows home prenium and I upgraded it to windows vista Ultimate. I got it from
[link deleted by mod].
I did this because i wanted a fresh start and my hard drive was filling up. When i upgraded it, and windows alerted me that it wasnt geniune. I did not do enough researching. I still have my windows prenium old files and does anyone know how to restore it back to windows prenium. Please no negative comments and help would be very much appreciated.

A:How to switch back to Vista Home Prenium

Welcome to TSG!

You can't downgrade, you'll need to do a clean install. Probably a good idea anyways, there may be more surprises in the Ultimate version you installed than just not being Genuine.

If this is a Major Brand system, you may have a Recovery Partition that will restore the PC to the way it was when it left the factory. This usually deletes all files, same as a clean install, though some have an option to save your documents.
You'll need to check the User Manual to see how to access it. CTRL+F11 for Dells, F10 for HP I believe.

Otherwise just boot with the Vista Home Premium DVD. Be sure you select the Custom install option (should be the only one you can choose).

You'll get to a screen to select the partition to install on. Select the correct partition (if you have more than one) then click Drive Options (Advanced) and delete the partition. You can then create a new partition then install.

I recently bought a laptop from my school and it came with Ubuntu installed on it. I wanted to switch to windows because that is what I have always used. So when I put the windows vista installation disk into the **** drive and rebooted my laptop it didn't boot into it. So I opened the disk up in Ubuntu and loaded the setup.exe (which I had to install wine to use), however when I tried to load the installation it said this:
"This computer does not have enough space for temporary files. Windows installation needs atleast 448 megabytes (MB) of space of any partition for temporary files. To install Windows, free enough space and restart the installation.

error code: 0x80004005"

I have around 200 gb of free space on my drives though. Does anyone have any idea what I need to do to be able to install vista? I'm completely lost by now.

A:I can't switch from Ubuntu back to Windows Vista

You need to change the boot order in BIOS, so your computer will boot from the DVD, rather than the disk.

So my monitor that has hdmi is having problems, Im going to take it in to get fixed but I?m using an old standard monitor now not with my video card. I don?t know how to get the audio back on. I went into the BIOS and turned on the onboard audio, but when I plug in my headphones it doesn?t show up or have sound.  Motherboard: ASRock g41m-vs3r2.0

A:Switched back to Regular Monitor Dont know how to switch audio back

Which OS version are you using of Windows. It should be a matter of going to control penal sound properties and you should see a drop down to specify the onboard audio vs the video cards HDMI HD Audio. Once you set this preference to have audio from the built in sound card you should be all set.

Need to no if I have this right

they have a dsl modem going to a Linksys router to a 24 port switch then to a little 4 port switch. sure, so then Would it be modem to router then router to any port on the big switch or is there an uplink port on the big switch it should go to? then you would hook a cat5e from one of the regular ports on the 24 port switch and run it to the uplink port on the 4 port switch need to no if the whole sequence is right. Hope someone can help, john will told me the cable would go from the big switch to the uplink on the small switch but I am wondering if I have it all right or not and wonderiing about from the router to the 24 port switch does the cable just go in a regular port in the big switch or if there is an uplink port does it go there. Hope you can understand my rambleing here. Thanks (please don't send me to a link) just need to no modem to router to regular port or uplink port on 24 port switch then from regular port on 24 port switch to uplink port on the 4 port switch. Thanks

A:Solved: Windows xp hookup question for modem, router, switch, to switch?

Router to uplink port on 24 port switch, and then normal port on the 24 port switch to uplink port on the second 4 port switch. An auto-MDX port on a device negates the need to worry about uplink ports for that particular cable connection.

I have Windows 7 Professional on my PC. In the first load I had, the PC should automatically detect if the LAN cable was plugged in, turn off the wireless radio, and change the network icon in the right bottom corner to reflect the cable was now in use.
Unfortunately, I had to reload my PC, and since then I can't get it to do it again.
So, what I'd like to achieve is this: Have Windows automatically detect when the cable is plugged in, turn of the wireless radio, and change the network icon in the right bottom corner to reflect the cable is in use - and, obviously, vice versa.
Can someone tell me what I need to do, please?

A:Have Windows 7 automatically switch to LAN when cable is plugged in and switch to wireless when it's removed

Hi,
There are two methods can help you.
1. Go to <Network and Sharing><Change Adapter Settings> and right click your wired and wireless adapters one at a time to change the properties. Select IPv4, click <Properties>
then click <Advanced>. For each one, clear the "Automatic metric" check box and assign the metric value manually. Setting your wired adapter?s metric value lower than wireless adapter one, such as ?1? for wired adapter and ?2? for wired adapter.

2. Go to <Network and Sharing><Change Adapter Settings>,
hold down 'alt' to bring up the "File" menu, select "Advanced", select
"Advanced Settings" from the dropdown menu, adjust the priority of your wired adapter higher than your wireless adapter in the "Advanced Settings" window under the "Adapters and Bindings" tab.
Hope this helps. Please remember to click ?Mark as Answer? on the post that helps you, and to click ?Unmark as Answer? if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

I have a wireless router connected to my modem, and ALL PC's connect to that for internet.

I also have a gigabit switch I use to transfer data in between several of the machines. I do it quite often and I don't want it eating up the wifi bandwidth.
I have done it before, but it has been a long time and I cannot remember how I forced internet traffic over the wifi and local traffic through the switch
Is the only way to do it to specifically tell Windows to use the IP address of the LAN connection? I know it will work that way, forcing local traffic directly to that IP, but I seem to remember there being an easier way to do this.

Thanks.

Is it possible to switch off a laptop screen - laptop runs Windows 7 - and prevent it being switched on again, without inputting a password?

I need to keep the laptop running, therefore I can't put it to sleep and logging-off has become a pain.

I've tried the Power Options, but the display comes on again when the mouse is nudged.

I've also tried "Fn + F6" on my Acer laptop, which switches off the screen, but an accidental key press brings it to life again.

Any ingenious little prog around? None I've seen have that crucial password privacy aspect.

Hi everyone, I searched through the forums but couldn't really find what I was looking for.

Currently we have a DHCP server set up to a switch, that has a special line connecting to a switch in our shop which is just across our back lot, giving network access to the few computers over there. They recently put in a new machine that needs network access, but they have already accidentally cut two ethernet cords. I'm looking to provide a wireless solution for the machine, but I don't want to have to spend a few thousand dollars on a large wireless switch.

Can I plug a wireless router into the switch in our shop, and essentially turn it into a wireless bridge, or is there another, simpler way to do this?

If this has already been answered, sorry for missing it!

Thanks!

Hello.

I upgraded to IE 8 just a few weeks ago. As luck would have it, I was also granted free hosting space with my employer. My employer arranged a secured connection so I can access my control panel (https). IE continues demanding a certificate and I just found out there's no way to disable this. I get the "Microsoft can't verify..." There's no way I'm getting a security certificate just to access my control panel. The domains I have are information sites, they're free (no financial transactions at all), and I do not have any need for a secure setting beyond domain administration. Likewise, this is the only site of this kind I visit and the only one that gives me that warning.

I think this is a very ridiculous measure and the setting, as well as the choice to visit, should be up to the user. Today, I found I can't access my control panel at all. I suspect it relates to IE's hassle over the site. I don't like the new IE. How can I revert back to the old one?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

A:Switch IE 8 back??

Just an update. Computability mode doesn't work with the site, either.

I was about to install the update for Firefox and after I clicked finish; It didn't seem like anything was loading, so I selected firefox startup. ( I'm still not even sure if anything was loading in the first place )

Anyway, I guess that could have been part of the problem, but there's more; I closed that window before I was about to finish because It looked like there were two windows open, but when I closed one, the other followed.

And anyway, I clicked the firefox setup icon on my desktop again and completed it this time, but for some reason, there are now three firefox icons on my desktop that don't even work!

On top of that, I can't even delete them; it says cannot read the source file or disk, or something like that. Anyway, I somehow even managed to delete the other version of firefox that was on my desktop when I dragged another to the recycle bin.

Now, I have to go to the start menu now if I want to use firefox.

The critical update icon is still on this version, so I guess if I could some how manage to delete this immortal firefox shortcuts, I'd be good. But what do I know?

A:Someone help me before I switch back to IE

The firefox updater can cause problems, I never use it, I just download the new version from the site. First off open the Task manager (right click taskbar - Task Manager), and stop any instance of Firefox.exe. Delete the Shortcuts on the desktop.

Uninstall Firefox from add/remove programs, then install the new version.
The Profile folder will still be on your PC, so extensions etc will be in the new version.

Or if you want to perform a clean install, then the following is from my post yesterday.

http://forums.techguy.org/t359484.html

Lister said:

For a Clean install of Firefox...

Best advice is to download the latest Firefox installer, then uninstall Firefox. copy the following files from the profile folder to a safe location (desktop folder perhaps?).

The Profile is located in (WinXP) = C:\Documents and Settings\*username*\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\*randomcharacters*.default

FILES to KEEP before deleting the old profile

# bookmarks.html Bookmarks.
# prefs.js Current user preferences.
# user.js User-added preferences (overrides prefs.js every startup).
# cookies.txt Cookies.
# hostperm.1 Cookies permissions, image permissions, and extension website install permissions list.
# signons.txt Saved passwords. Requires the "key3.db" file to work.
# key3.db Supplements password file.

Then delete the Mozilla folder in Application data and any remaining 'Mozilla Firefox' folder in 'Program Files'.

I thought that I had this all figured out, but my dad just asked me a question about my setup, and I can't answer it.

The setup is like this:
[ip-phones + computers]-->[small switch]-->[managed L2 switch]-->[router]-->[modem]

I have several ip-phones and computers grouped into blocks of 8. Each set of 8 is a medley of phones/computers connected to a small switch http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Sate...nksys/Common/VisitorWrapper&lid=3681322279B34

Each of these switches, in turn, will be connected to a managed L2 switch http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/pwcnt_3448p?c=ca&cs=calca1&l=en&s=biz that will create 2 VLANS: One VLAN will contain all of the phones, and the other will contain all of the computers. In turn, each VLAN will have its own router and DSL modem, thereby separating the network traffic.

I know that I can use this L2 switch to make the VLANS based on the MAC addresses of the devices. However, the smaller switches do not support 802.1q [VLANs]. Will it be a problem that the smaller switches do not support VLANs? Essentially, will this setup work to split up network traffic?

Thanks once again,
-Roger

A:Computer, switch, switch, router, modem

I have the same DELL switch for my phones. You PoE will not carry across the linksys switches, so that is the first problem.
Next are the computers attached to the phones? Or does each device get its own drop?

And whats this about 2 routers and modems? Thats a bit over kill!! QoS would do the trick.

I would run all the devices off the Dell and attach the computers to the Phones (most IP Phones have a passthrough port) Configure the Dell with trunk ports with the Computer VLAN passing untagged traffic making it the native VLAN. While having the phones on a Tagged VLAN(If you phones conig allows you to set the VLAN in its config great! If not you can bind the MAC to the VLAN). The you create a QoS policy giving the VoIP traffic priority!

Hey there!

Apols if this has been covered a lot in the forum, but a search baffled my untrained eyes..!

Have just purchased this; HP Pavilion g6-2210sa 15.6" Laptop - Red Deals | Pcworld

Upon hearing that I was up for the challenge of setting it up myself, the sales assistant pointed out that the very first thing I must do is back up the OS (windows 8).

I asked, 'oh, is the OS on a hidden partition?' .. and he said no, its in the BIOS. And I only have one chance to make a back-up copy, as soon as I switch on. Also; if I have software issues after that point, but haven't backed up the OS, I can't claim it under the manufacturer's warranty as an issue.

I believe that the .. key? .. is in the bios now, so I never have to worry about losing it, but apart from that .. egad.

Is there an auto-prompt, or do I need to do a regular ol' back-up .. and where do I back it up to, a separate hard drive/dvd etc?

So. I have this shiny, new, laptop. In it's shiny, new, unopened box, right now. And am starting to wonder if I should have coughed up the ?50 to get 'em to set it up for me..!

Advice, please?

Thanks!

I have so many problems with Win 10 that I want to change back to Win 7. Is it practical to do a clean install of Win 7 after previously migrating all my programs to Win 10? Will I just have to go back to Win 10 in the future?

A:Is It Practical To Switch Back To Win 7?

Hi, Sorry to hear of your difficulties. Your PC isn't compatible with Win 10 according to this list
Windows 10 - Which model supports upgrade to Windows 10?

- I couldn't quickly find one for the USA so you could check that as it could be a US only model.

If you had been using disk imaging, you could simply have restored images created before you upgraded in a couple of hours- maybe less.

Yes, you can clean install Win 7: I would suggest you use disk imaging to image what you have now so that you have a full backup which allows you to retrieve almost anything you forgot to back up any other way.

Nothing will force you to upgrade to Win 10, and you can reinstall that or restore your disk images any time you like.

Creating disk images lets you restore Windows and all your disks and partitions to a previous working state, quickly and probably without technical help.

You can recover from:
- a failed disk drive (restore to a new one)
- ransomware (which encrypts your disk)
- user error
- unrecoverable problems from failed updates to problem programs
- unbootable PC (hardware faults aside)

Images also act as a full backup- you can extract files too.

You can even use images to help you move more easily and quickly to a new PC.

Imaging can even help you sleep at night knowing you have a second chance.

Many here recommend Macrium Reflect (free) as a good robust solution and more reliable than some others. It?s
- more feature rich
- more flexible
- more reliable

I have a desktop pc I just built I am currently using my laptop HD in my desktop machine if I was to put the laptop HD back in the laptop would it bootup and run programs like normal or will I have to reinstall the os and all programs

A:can I switch my HD back to my laptop from desktop

You would need to clean install the OS and all the programs.

If the OS for the desktop was installed on the laptop hard drive (installed in the desktop) then all of the drivers in the OS are geared for the desktop. None of the drivers needed to run on the laptop are installed. It would not start up.

You could install the hard drive in the laptop and then do a Repair Install on the existing OS installation to try and save some time and effort, but these can result in some strange behaviors in some cases.
To have the best OS installation you really should do a clean install.

Watching youtube, and playing some games, and watching VLV --- whenever I switch between speakers and headphones the audio stops. I have to refresh the youtube page or reload the VLC video.

Is there a way to get around this?

I use autohotkey to switch, but that shouldn't matter. The problem is there when I manual switch via the sound menu.

If you can fix this I will be in debt. Ty

A:switch between headphones and speakers, and cant get sound back

You should not have to manually switch anything when going between headphones and speakers if you use the correct jacks. The front panel connection on the motherboard should be used to connect to the case front panel jacks, and use the HD Audio, not the AC97 connection for the motherboard connection so it will auto sense.

Otherwise, a little more info on what you are doing.

When you attempt to boot up your pc what happens? do you have anything displayed on the screen, do you hear the computer being turned on at all or is it just not starting up at all?

Indeed my guess would be a Bugged PSU if nothing pops up on screen and you don't hear the pc turn on. If you hear the pc turn on (fans spinning and all) but do not get anything on screen followed by a shutdown then its most likely the motherboard.

You might be running a cheap PSU and that has a potential to even fry your computers parts and components. If it boils down to the PSU, i suggest investing in a reliable PSU like Antec perhaps or Silverstone

Hello all,

I've just pressed wrongly Fn+F4 instead of Fn+F5 on my Compaq Laptop. Then my monitor is not smooth any more. Then I rightclick on Desktop -> Properties -> Display Setting. I select something that I can't remember now. Something like switch to 2nd monitor... And then the monitor goes blank and black. I can't see anything. I guess it has switched to external monitor. As I rightclick on Desktop, it has 1 more entry: [NVidia Display] -> [Laptop display] and [TV]. I select each of them but nothing changes. I do some searching, this result seems to be similar:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080502203000AAz7Ynr

but I tried to press many times Fn+F4 but nothing helps. When I rightclick on Desktop, the menu context appears, but I can't see the Display Setting window any more.

How can I switch back to default monitor? Just by editing Registry or ini file...?

Please help me, tell me how to do now? Thank you a million!

OK, I use a second monitor, plug into the laptop. Then the "real" display is shown in the second monitor. On that screen I restore the default monitor to the laptop (primary). OK for now. Thank God!

I had this once before and the only solution that worked was to boot into safe mode and select "Open last configuration that worked". However, this time it did not fix the problem.

I have checked the obvious like making sure that nothing was set to mute, or making sure that the headset was working by doing the sound and microphone check.I don't know what to do next.

We are moving to a new office location. The guys who will be setting our network is proposing the following equipment:

1. 3Com 24-port 10/100 mbps switch
2. 24-port Patch panel
3. 6u data cabinet
4. 1u cable management

The new office will be a 2-floor building with around 40 computers. I asked some of my friends who are more expert on network setup and told me typical switch (Linksys, Cisco) will do if we need to save some money.

What do you think? Thanks a lot!

A:Is 3Com 24-switch necessary or typical switch will do?

Well, first off, I'd be specifying a gigabit switch for expandability, I can't see investing in a 10/100 switch in 2010! If you don't need a managed switch, or need to save money initially, and unmanaged switch will probably be significantly cheaper.

In point of fact, if you want to go really cheap, you can get away for less than $100!

I understand that a hub is more like a party line, where all devices hear and read data before sending it to next port, and a switch is advanced hub. But, what is a router. I know what a wireless router is, but they say a router is more advanced than a switch. Can you buy a non-wireless router?

Also, can you connect 2 switches together? So, Modem-----to Switch----to Switch----Computer

And both switches have other devices connected?

A:Hub vs Switch vs Router/ 2 Switch Story

you CAN buy a non-wireless router--but--the two I found on Amazon were only 10/100 (most modern systems use gigabit ethernet 10/100/1000) but wired are generally cheaper than a wireless router(the Cisco below is NOT cheap)--however--it's not necessary to use the wireless part of the wireless router as most have at least 4 ports (wired).

Yes you can connect switches together but they won't allow for multiple computers to connect to the Internet (at least not easily nor in a way that makes sense).

What devices are you trying to connect together?

wired routers:
Amazon.com: TRENDnet 4-Port Broadband Router TW100-S4W1CA (Black): Electronics

Amazon.com: Cisco-Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port 10/100 Switch: Electronics

So about 2 weeks ago, my Windows 8 PC decided to upgrade itself to Windows 8.1 - I SWEAR I did not click "Yes" to update to 8.1 it just did it on it's own!! Every time that window popped up, I clicked cancel. All of a sudden, it tells me to reboot my PC to finish installing the Windows 8.1 update. WHAT?!?!

And, now that it's done... my PC is completely screwed up. Half my software doesn't work properly. I can't get from my traditional desktop to my "tiles" not that I use them much but dragging the mouse into the corner doesn't bring that up. I can't drag the mouse into the other corner to bring up the menu to shut down the PC (I just hold the power button now) and lastly - neither of my Blu Ray drives works. The PC came with a BR burner, and I had a BR burner in one of my old PC's that died, so I installed it here. And they were both working in harmony for the past several months, until now. Now when I put a disc in either drive, nothing happens.

How do I fix this? Should I just try to use the recovery and revert back to a fresh Windows 8 install? How much will I lose from my HD? I have a 1 TB HD and it's about 55% filled with stuff.

A:Windows 8.1 "upgrade" does weird things to my PC... how can I switch back?

If this is a OEM computer you should have a recovery partition which you can use to reinstall the operating system to the condition it came out of the box.

Hi all,

I connected my HP Pavilion dv4-2165dx to my TV via the HDMI slot, and worked perfectly. I disconnected the cable from the notebook when I was done and still got the main LCD display to work. When I restarted the system, the LCD display was gone, just a blank screen with a backlight. The system is booting correctly, I can hear the windows7 startup sounds and even type my password in and access my account. So far I know that:

1. The screen hardware is not damaged, because after some reboots and taking the battery off for an hour I could get the input back with no problem (with windows complaining about being unable to boot and suggesting me to run Startup repair), but got a black screen again after rebooting again.

2. I can connect the HDMI again and get the output on the TV screen, but no main display is detected. If I toggle between displays with fn+f4, only the external HDMI-TV display works.

3. I get no startup screen either. That is, not even the first screen from where I can access the BIOS. But if I connect the HDMI-TV from the beginning I get all that info on the TV.

4. I reinstalled the Graphics driver from HP with no change.

My guess is that somewhat I messed up the default configuration and that the system is only recognizing the external displays as default displays. I haven't been able to modify this from the Control Panel - Display Settings menu, and I don't know where in the registry this default startup options could be.

Any help?

thanks!

Hi there

I've noticed one little problem in W8 that IMO needs to be fixed by Ms.

If you hook an external monitor to your laptop say and use the Windows + P key to switch to that display only -- fine. Also switching back again is no problem or even running on BOTH displays.

BUT if you shutdown / switch off and then unplug the external monitor -- on reboot -- your screen will after the initial startup and login will go blank. You need to plug in the external monitor again to bring the menu back to switch the display back to the primary.
There might be another way but if you only have a blank screen ??? !!!.

Cheers
jimbo

A:Switch back to standard monitor after using Windows + P keys again

Hey Jimbo,

This may be a feature of the hybrid shutdown/restart/reboot cycle. I may be wrong, but I don't think when you reboot Win 8 does it poll all your devices again. Since this is essentially a hibernation/sleep restart (for speed), we may have to live with this.

I ran into this problem when I originally installed Win 8. On reboot, the primary screen came up blank, until I turned on the secondary screen, and fixed the arrangment. That was a most interesting couple of minutes until I figured out what happened.
My secondary screen is hooked up w/ HDMI, and my primary screen is DVI (no HDMI port). Screens seemed to be assigned initially as HDMI, DVI, VGA Analog, until you fix this. Let me know if I'm wrong on this assumption. Thanks

John

Hi guys I have a weird issue here which seems to make little sense. We have a small network interconnected by a switch. However all of a sudden our internet seems to be dying out in a weird way. The internet would die out after 10 minutes of use although we can browse teh network. We then turn the switch off and then on and its back to normal - but then after another 10 minutes its dies out again and we literally have someone turning the switch on and off every 10 15 minutes here

The switches lights are bleeping on and off as though nothing has happened :\ however internet just goes out. The lights on my modem router are blinking so there doesn't seem to be a problem with that - even so it seems to be confined to the switch as when I turn off and turn on the switch I get 10 minutes of internet doesnt matter if I plug in the routers cable in another port or so its the same.

What is the problem here I really need help on this. Please guys!

Hi,I'm considering trying to clone my current hard drive to a new drive so I can replace it without having to install Windows XP again (I posted about that here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic335750.html).I read it's possible to clone the old hard drive to a new one (using something like Easeus Todo or Easeus Disk Copy), then just unplug the old drive, plug the new one in and it should work like nothing has changed. Also I read that afterward, you can switch back and forth between the old and new drives without any problems. Is that correct?Seondly, in the event that I can't clone my drive successfully and get the system to boot off of the new drive, the second course of action I was thinking was to do a fresh installation of Windows XP. I have Windows XP Home with SP1, and the disk that came with my comptuer is an OEM disk "only for distribution with a new PC". I was told I would be able to activate a new installation of Windows using the same Product Key on this computer even if I change the hard drive, just as long as I don't change the motherboard. My main question is, if I do this and get a fresh installation of WinXP activated successfully on the new drive, would I still be able to switch back and boot from the old hard dirve if I needed to? Or would activating a fresh install of WinXP on a new hard drive deactivate the installation on the old drive?

A:Fresh Install WinXP OEM on new hard drive - Can you still switch back to the old one?

This is a real curley one, (meaning difficult)

I have never been able to successfully Clone XP, but can give you some Guidence for reinstalling XP from the OEM Disk that should work for you. If you haven't made any changes, except for the HDD you should be able to Boot from either one, just by converting the other HDD from a Slave to Master and converting the Master to Slave, but you don't really need to do that? You can interchange Data from either one to the other, if the two are set up as Master and Slave?

Is that what you want?

Hello,

I have a Linksys WRT54g wireless router. I use one of the LAN (wired) ports for one of my desktops. However, the other day, the first LAN port died on me. I was surfing the net, when the computer told me that a network cable has been unplugged. I checked the connections, but the problems persisted.

I then moved the cable to the next LAN port over on the built in switch, and that one worked. This leads me to believe that the first LAN port has failed.

What should I do about this? Do you think Linksys would provide me with a new one?

I am about to add 3 new servers into an existing network, which is currently all on 1gbps ethernet. All of the new servers are SSD-based and to me it makes sense to go with 10gbps coming out of the servers into a switch, and then 1gbps out to the workstations.

The new server location is about 200 feet from the existing networking equipment/old server location, so using Cat 6A/Cat 7 copper would be REALLY nice/economical.

Where I am hitting a jam is any 48 port gigabit + 4 10gbps switch is $$$.

I am trying to find a small 10gbps copper switch, say an 8 port, that is expandable, and compatible with a 48 port 1gbps switch. Does such a thing exist?

Hi and welcome

Go for it. win 7 will find most of the drivers and you can find the rest manually. MS and mosts of us recommend a clean install. While vista drivers will work in compatibility mode if there are win 7 drivers you would use them first.

I have a Gateway laptop that has vista basic pre-installed. I want to remove vista and install windows xp pro instead. I can't seem to find the drivers though. Has anyone else had any success doing this? If so, where did you find the drivers for it? Thank you, in advance, for your consideration.

you may have problems with Drivers, I have a few people who have wanted to do this and the latest hardware does not have XP drivers on the website

I would run Belarc.com and make a note of all the devices, then goto the manufacturers websites and see if they have XP drivers

thats it,, i searched in youtube xp aero,, but only got lessons on how to make the taskbar to be transparent and also the windows..... i know all that,, the only thing that is missing is the program that makes able to switch apps in xp like vista....

thnx in adv

A:switch apps in xp like vista

There is already an easy task switcher built into all Windows platforms.
Just hold down the Alt key and press the Tab key (maybe multiple presses of the Tab will be needed).
When the app is showing that you want to switch to just let the Alt key go.

Note: If you don't see the task your want, or you have changed your mind and don't want to switch, just press the Esc key.

I have two computers. One is XP MCE, which I use soley for entertainment purposes in my family room and occasional surfing, no games or other outside programs. I have installed a second internal harddrive-500GB, and increased the RAM to 1.5GB. The other computer runs XP Home and is primarily an office and internet use computer. I have all the original system driver disks for both. The computers are networked on a wired system. Originally I was going to upgrade the office computer to XP MCE so I could record other shows when there was a conflict with a previously scheduled show on the family room computer. I found out Vista Home Premium included MCE 2005, so I thought I could upgrade the family room computer to Vista and take advantage of the MCE 2005 and not have to worry about compatability with outside programs because I do not use any on this computer. I would also transfer the original MCE OS to the office computer. Ideally, I would upgrade the tuner card on the family room computer to a dual tuner, and install the old tuner into the office computer. What is the best procedure for accomplishing this plan. Is it possible. I had two ideas, but due to my limited knowledge of computers, I figured I share them with others before I try them. Both ideas would include backing up all my files and original OS's. The first idea is to basically copy the XP MCE OS and install it on the office computer and install Vista on the family room. The other is to swap the C drives, which ... Read more

Firstly I apologise if this is in wrong area of forum. I've just done a reinstall of vista on my advent 5411 laptop. No real reason other than it running slow. We use the laptop a lot for streaming movies from a server upstairs to the laptop in question and view it using the hdmi socket on the laptop to view the image on a samsung lcd tv in the living room. until the reinstall everything worked perfectly but now when i connect everything up and use the Fn + F4 keys all i get is a blinking laptop screen everytime the keys are pressed. this is starting to really annoy me as i cant seem to find an answer on the internet. nothing else has changed with the set up from how it was previous.

Did you install the correct graphics drivers? Go to the Advent website and download and install the latest ones on there if you didn't do that.

I've reinstalled the drivers that a program called DriverCure suggested were faulty and cleaned up my registry, but that doesn't stop the BSODs. Any ideas much appreciated!

A:Continuing BSODs since switch to Vista

Your error code is 0xA and these are caused by either hardware or drivers attempting to address a higher IRQ Level then they should which results in crashes.

At this point we don't have enough to go on. So...

1. Stay away from anything that does registry because they are mostly a bane to a system.

2. Give us your hardware specs including make and model of your motherboard, make and amount of RAM installed, power supply make and wwattage, video card, etc.

3. Give us the security software you have installed.

4. When do the BSODs occur?

Hi, I've been trying to get this problem fixed for a while but I just can't seem to straighten it out.

Currently I am logged on to my Administrator account. I have a program that can only be run on an account which doesn't have administrator privileges. So I made another account and it was working. Then out of the blue I can not switch users anymore. I can lock and log off the admin account but whenever I try to log on to my user account I look at the loading screen for a minute and then my screen fades to black and I can only see my pointer on the screen.

At this stage I can ctrl + alt + delete and log off but I can not access anything or even ever see any icons or desktop on my user account.

Is it something in my registry or what?

Thanks in advance.

Hi. . .

So that I may better understand your predicament, please. . .

1. Is the administrator account described in your post the same account that you were required to set up under Vista's initial installation (when the pc was new)?
2. Were any other accounts created besides the standard user account for the program's execution?
2a. Did you ever change the name of a user account?
3. Why could this one program not run under admin?
4. You mentioned the registry... did you activate the hidden admin account? If so, did you use the "net user" command?
5. Did you ever disable the User Access Control (UAC)?
6. Have you "tweaked" the registry or the system in any manner?
7. Did you ever used ICACLS or change any file permissions?

regards. . .

Hello fellows, I found this site while looking for a remedy to my current problem, so hopefully you guys can help.

I'm currently at a cousin's house as she wanted help in uninstalling Vista on her desktop, and instead install XP. Although I had never done one of the vista-to-xp switches myself, I thought I could do it as I've recently reinstalled operating systems on my computers before.

Her desktop is a Gateway GT5464. It should have the chipset name on it's website... I have a slip of paper back at my house (i went back to grab Office disks, etc.) and I'll post the chipset i found pre-XP-install when i head back home. Her current chipset reads as a Intel 82945G Express from the device manager screen, under the display adapters tab.

After formatting her hard drive and installing XP, everything worked smoothly. A little graphical hiccup, and no sound or ethernet drivers, but nothing a quick driver download from Intel's site wouldn't fix.
When i got to Intel's site, all i could find was a graphic drivers download.

Since then, I've been wondering if there was some way to find proper drivers for the computer, since all the ones i've found thusfar are only for Vista.

Many thanks in advance. I'll post the pre-XP chipset once I drive home (10 min.)

A:Vista to XP switch: missing driver help

Ok, it'd appear the pre-XP install had the same chipset drivers. However, I also wrote down Intel 82801 Chipset when i first tried (it was very early this morning, so i have forgotten why), in case it helps any.

It's been very difficult to try and find XP drivers for this desktop. The vista to XP installation was harder than i thought...

Our old shop computer's screen went bad recently and my boss just went out and bought a new one without checking the system requirements of our troubleshooting software. He bought an Acer Aspire 5532 w/ Athlon 64 TF-20 1.6GHz processor with Windows 7 home Premium 64 bit. To make a long story short it got dumped in my lap and I'm supposed to make it work. Detroit Diesel and Caterpillar don't have software updates yet to be compatible w/ Win7 and it may not come soon either. Cat says they don't recommend a 64 bit OS period. Freightliner's parts and wiring diagram website also has issues with 64 bit systems. We are a fairly small trucking company with no IT department so I am needing some suggestions on what my options are as far as downgrading from windows7. From my understanding our software will work with Vista, but need pointers on how to go about this without it being too expensive of an endeavour. Will 32 bit work with this computer? What version of Vista has the least problems? We don't use this computer for much else besides web browsing, Adobe Reader, and our engine software so we don't need the most feature packed version either. Any help would be appreciated.

I have two monitors attached to my computer on 2 different desks. I also have two keyboards and two mice. I like to use only one monitor at a time, as I move between each desk several times during the day.

I have an nvidia graphics card, and In Windows XP, I use nview (a software from nvidia) to create a keyboard shortcut to switch from one monitor to the other.

But there is no nview for Vista

Switching the monitors manually in Vista is a big pain, with several steps of clicking on things - which is fine if you do it rarely but, I do it a lot.

Does anyone know a way to switch monitors in Vista like I did in XP with Nview? Like, some hidden windows thing, or some software out there? I've been looking and not finding.

Hello ,

When I ran Windows 98, I was constantly rebooting and always switched the whole system off at the end of the day.

What are the pros and cons of leaving Windows 2000 on indefinitely?
Also, will this affect the wear of my monitor? Should that be switched off separately and the system left running?

Win2K is certainly very much more stable than 98, and hasn't crashed since I had it installed.

Pentium III
Win 2K
480 MB RAM
550 cpu

(I am looking to upgrade motherboard and videa card, etc. as soon as funds are available.)

Thanks for any thoughts you may have.

Hi - I am having to extend my network and want to use 2 switches. Current one is a Belkin 5 port 10/100. Now thinking of buying the:

Belkin 8 port 10/100 (F5D5513Iuk8) or
Netgear 8 port 10/100 (FS608) or
Netgear Prosafe 8 port 10/100 (FS108).

Which is the best one to get (I realise the Netgear Prosafe is normally more expensive but I can get it at the same price as the Belkin)?

Could anybody also advise if the second switch will provide as much speed (bandwidth, I think) to the PCs it supplies (3) as the first one which will be linked to my router and 3 PCs and a couple of printers. I would really appreciate any advice you can give - I have spent ages Googling this question and am still not clear.

Many thanks

So I just bought a KVM Switch mini size, the guy at the store told me that it would do the trick. The trick meaning that I would be able to switch between the Xbox 360 and the PC with no problems, at first I had a lot of trouble getting it to work until I realised that I had forgotten to plug the keyboard cable into the KVM Switch. At least I managed to get things to work... A bit.
The problem is that I manage to switch between the PC and the 360, but once I've switched to the 360 it immediately goes back to the PC. I've checked everything in the manual and I'm doing it "right" as far as I know:
"7. Switch between the computers (PC1 and PC2) by pressing the 'Select' button on the front panel.

Use the 'Hot Key' command on the keyboard. Press [Scroll Lock] quickly twice and then [1] or [2] to switch between computer 1 and computer 2."

Whenever I do this the KVM Switch beeps, switches to the 360 then back to the PC, could anyone please give me a hand?

I am in the process of setting up a pretty extensive gigabit network in my home. I have the new D-Link DIR-655 Pre-N Router with four gigabit ports and I am using all four to run to 8-port D-Link unmanaged switches in four locations. The first location is right next to the router. I have a fifth location. I searched hard for an 8-port wired gigabit router. If I had found one (at a reasonable price) I would use it as the base in from the modem then use the D-Link for wireless only (no routing). Alas ... I was unable to find one and so I am wondering if there are any issues running from a switch to another switch.

A:Router to switch to switch?

Only issue is a slight impariment in speed as it passes thru two switches and the router . . You may not be able to decerne it.

Hi all,

Just wondering if I can connect a switch to a switch? so my network would look like this

Router ---- Switch ---- Switch - - - - computer connected wirelessly

primary reason for doing this is i want to bring the wireless router closer to the middle of my house... some areas are getting really weak signals..

Sincerely,

You could do that, but why not just get a longer network cable? Ethernet on Cat-5e is good up to 100m.

Hello. I currently have a home network as follows.

3 PC's connected to router.
router connected to cable modem.

I would like to increase the througput on my LAN (amongst the 3 pc's) so I'm thinking about adding a switch such that it would be [3pc's->switch->router-cable modem]. I was wondering whether adding the switch would actually improve the LAN thoroughput or is this just adding unnecessarily repetetive. I am aware of the "7 layers of the osi model" of networking but am wondering whether switches and routers work on the same layers. Im assuming NO because router bases routing based on IP address while switch will deal with the MAC addresses (am i correct???). Since a switch will perform less inspections on the packets (IP filtering, SPI, etc..) am I going to get better results when adding the switch??

BTW, my router: SMC2804WBR
Switch i might add: Gigafast Mini Switch EZ500-S

A:To switch or not to switch? That is the question.

Your router has a 100Mbit switch in it so unless you are getting a gigabit switch and your PCs have gigabit interfaces you will get no significant boost in network speed.

You may get a small speed inrease if you buy a good 100Mbit switch - the ones integrated in home routers tend to be the bottom of the barrel type - this will give you some extra under very high loads.

What is a "good" switch? You would want something with crossbar fabric and/or cut-through packet forwarding (those are expensive).

I just bought a netgear Cable/DSL router with an 8 port switch built in. I am currently still at school, so there is no need for the router, but I want to use the hardware as a switch. I am confused as to how to set this up.

The router I have is a Netgear RO318.

I know very little about setting up networks, but I assumed it would be the same as just switching out the hub. Boy was I wrong. I switched them out and it doesn't work like I thought it would. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks all.
