Hello,
On occasion, when I do a google search, click on a result, I get taken to some random sales/marketing site. I don't know how long this has been on my machine, but I've been trying for 3 days to get rid of it...AVAST, Spybot, TDDSKiller, Adaware, MBAM. I'm at my wits end and about to reformat this laptop. Any help would be appreciated. DDS Log below...Thanks for any help....

Our school currently has 800+ Probook 640 G2s and I've been repairing them but starting to come across a trend. The device won't come on AT ALL. I've replaced motherboard, power button board, tried different battery both in and out, reseated ram and tried the other location, different SSD and power supplies. I've almost built a new one a few times. We sent one off for them to repair at Depot so I could figure out what I'm doing wrong and the repair sheet came back with 3 parts. 845847-601 System Board (I know what this is obviously even if that part number doesn't match anything for the laptop). 846867-001 Hardware, HDD Bracket / Screw / ODD Bracket / Smart846868-001 Hardware, HDD Bracket / Screw / ODD Bracket / Smart The two above parts however I don't know what they are. Our machines have SSDs in them and there's no bracket. It plugs straight into the MB and 1 screw holds it down. I've tried the part searcher and it finds nothing (not even for the system board number). If anyone has any ideas it would be MUCH appreciated.

Hi everyone. first pardon me for my bad english and im not really understand computer things..
Im really desperate because of my weird issues.
i have my laptop asus N55SF for more than 2 years. but since 3 months ago im experiencing weird issues that suddenly happening and i cant find any solving.
here is what happened :
I can load all webpages. but for some website, the media in that website (such as picture, videos streaming, script) are not displaying. it just displaying plain text with blank white background without any media. some of site load the video player, but the video does not. for some website all the pictures in it are not displaying, just appear as cracked image (when file is missing or corrupted icon).
It only happen for some website. example steamcommunity.com and few other site that i dont remember. even in the steam client app, the content from that steam related is not displaying. such as friendlist avatar, other friend steam profile. even the in game dota 2 i cant view the content from news and store, and myfriendlist avatar still not showing.
i have report it to steam support, but they only says its because my adobe shockwave and flash not updated yet. i've already install the latest, and tried reinstall those adobe, even reset my pc (reinstall and delete everything and turn setting to default). but it still happening..
This is the screenshot :
For those who expert and understanding please give me some solution im begging you guys..

A:Unknown error about media that i cant give description

Try this and see if it helps with the Steam Client..

Exit Steam

navigate to where your Steam files (games etc) are stored and open the config folder.

Delete the "htmlcache" and "cookies" folders.

If this issue is also occouring in the overlay browser , also delete the "overlayhtmlcache" and "overlaycookies" folders.

Re-Run Steam and see it has helped.
It may not help as it's happening in your browser also but we shall see.....baby steps.

Another possibility is it could be your ISP blocking content from the Steam servers....I have read reports from various support sites where everyone having this problem was on the same few ISPs.

Hello!
First of all I'v got some browser-viruses like yooundoo, g0ogle, uc browser and so on. Tried to solve problem myself. Used Adware Removal Tool by TSA. For a while it looked good, but then I noticed a lot of .exe processes with strange names like "name of the game.exe" or "name of folder with photos.exe" and so on. In addition I began to have problems with page loading in browsers. Often it's like

Like you know how people take videos of games they play and feed it into their PC so it is on there? What do I need... and what kind of stuff is possible? Could I transfer a tape from a VCR? A DVD? Or just games? Give me all the information you can because I know nothing about any of this.

How expensive would this be? I hope not too much... If it is something that is selling software with it, but thats what makes it expensive, tell me the way to get it without the software so it is cheaper. I have plenty of video editing programs and stuff, I just need to get the stuff there.

Okay so i read the thread posted a couple of years ago which is very similar she posted that she bought the sims 2 and in order for it to work you need to have DirectX 9.0c but after downloading it, it still didnt work and after reading posts I figured out that i need a graphics adapter or driver or something but when i do the dxdiag it says that my video card stuff is n/a or blank? I'm frustrated I have the sims2 and I cannot play it which is a waste of a lot of money. someone please help.

A:Directx 9.0c graphic adapters for unknown parts

Chances are your PC or laptop simply does not meet the minimum requirements of the game, apparently the graphics adapter. If possible, you will have to install one that does or get a better PC.

Keep in mind that before buying any game you should read the minimum specs listed on the game box or game website and make sure your PC meets them. If your PC meets the recommended specifications, that would be even better.

I'm guessing you have integrated graphics which is not meeting game requirements. To confirm, try downloading a stand alone program called SIW and run it. It does not have to be installed. Just double click on the siw.exe file and look in the left column for "Video," click on it and see what it will list.

I was just about to go to bed when I logged in via remote desktop to to my Media Center PC to schedule a show to record when the Windows update notification popped up. I have it set to install updates automatically on Sundays, but since no shows were scheduled to record for the rest of the night I decided to go ahead and install the updates. After it was done and rebooted I logged in to check and make sure everything was OK.

Now when I run any system program (mmc.exe, task manager, etc.) that usually doesn't require a UAC prompt, I now get a UAC prompt showing publisher unknown. I have the Sysinternals process explorer installed, and when I run it as administrator it shows the publisher correctly as Microsoft Corporation. I checked and there are no errors in the event viewer.

I figured it has something to do with security certificates. I ran sfc /verifyonly and it finds errors, so I ran sfc /scannow and let it repair. After rebooting it didn't fix it though. Running sfc /verifyonly again it still shows errors, and running sfc /scannow this time and I get "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them." In the CBS.log file there aren't any lines with "Cannot repair member file" in it, but there are a lot of other things.

Since this is a Media Center PC, it is recording TV shows daily, so I have limited time to do anything that requires rebooting or shutting down. I have to go to bed, I've already stayed up wa... Read more

"The archive is either in unknown format or damaged"

I've been getting this message anytime I try to open any ".exe" file. Every other file on my computer opens fine except for the ".exe" files. I can't open RealPlayer, but I can open a RealPlayer video (which automatically opens RealPlayer) and it works fine. I have a video clip saved as an HTM File, which opens my web browser, but I can't manually open Firefox or Internet Explorer by themselves. I'm sure this has to be a virus, but none of my virus programs can be opened or run. Does anyone know of a way to fix this?

I tried downloading Spybot from the web and just replacing the .exe file, but I can't even run the installer program. So, does that mean something's wrong with the way the computer reads .exe files and not the actual files themselves? Also, obviously I can't run HiJackThis either. I'd be happy with pretty much any solution that doesn't involve wiping my hard drive. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

---------------------------------------------

I originally posted this in the HJT forum, but because I can't run HJT, I was told I've been "declared clean" and should post here instead.

I tried running the various anti-virus programs listed on the HJT forums directly from their homepages, which worked, but none of them apparently have found the correct virus, or it's not a virus that's causing my problem since I'm still getting the above error ... Read more

I have two issues that I hope you can assist me with.  The first paragraph below is for the first issue.  The second paragraph below is for the second issue.  I appreciate any assistance you could provide.

On 4/2/2016, I placed an order for a new display back cover and a set of hinges in the HP Parts Store.  My HP [personal information removed].  Total order cost = $233.91 in US dollars.  I paid for the parts already via credit card and the parts were delivered to me.  A friend of mine repairs laptops as a full time occupation.  She was planning to help me repair the broken laptop hinge and replace the back cover so part of the replacement hinge would be protected when I transport the computer.  Unfortunately, my friend found out that her sister was diagnosed with terminal cancer after I received the parts from the HP Parts Store.  My friend has been spending lots of time caring for her ill sister and her elderly parents in their 80s.  She is unable to help me repair the right hinge and back cover of my laptop.  The parts have not been touched and they are still in the boxes.  I would like to return the parts and receive a credit applied to my charge account; however the HP return policy states that parts must be returned in 14 days.  The HP Parts Store also charges a restocking fee.  Can you assist with this return transaction?  I would prefer to not pay the restocking fee.

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

I have a 160 GB HD NTFS file system with 118 GB free space. My Documents and setting folder has 8.87 GB with 12,388 Files and 816 folders that are many layers deep.

The problem: Every so often my XP professional OS will not accept a new long file name (less than 50 characters and spaces) but will accept an 8 character (DOS) name.

What is wrong? Have I reached a limit because of the long file names? Or too many files in a single folder? Or?

I run into the same problem with by back-up Hard Drive which has a FAT32 file system.

The problem seems to go away, at least for a while, if I restart my Dell Dimension 9100 PC.

Thank you, Supportbob4
9/9/05
I have replicated my problem both for my NTFS drive and the FAT32 drive.

I also finally got an error message which tells me the problem:
The maximum character and space limit of 255 includes file name plus the names of all the stacked folders after My Dicuments! The whole file path!

It can be very confusing because I was able to make it more than 255 characters and spaces but all of sudden it reached a threshold where it will no longer work until I shortened the file name back to 255. Going between hard drives seemed to make it recover sometimes when I had a longer than 255 path but then all of a sudden it stopped working.

I need to keep my folder names shorter and be cautious on length of file names too when I have many stacked folders.

A:Long file names not accepted Short DOS names ok

From what I recall the WinXP limits it to 255 characters, filenames written command prompt are 253 characters, and those include the filename and extension.

So I'm planning on building my new PC and have found a list of all of the parts that I would like to purchase. This will be my first build and wanted to check that A) all these parts are compatible and B) that these are the best parts I can get for the money.

To clarify I will be using the PC for mainly gaming and Photoshop/other design work. The prices below are the best prices I could find online too. (Budget is about £600)
Tower - Antec 900 Nine Hundred Ultimate Gamer Case - £82.99
Power Supply - Corsair 500 Watt CX500 V2 Builder Series 80 Plus Power Supply - £44.98
CPU - Intel Core i5 2500K - £166.97
Motherboard - ASRock Z68 Extreme3 - £100.00
RAM - Patriot G Series ‘Sector 5’ Edition 4GB - £24.49
Graphics card - Sapphire RADEON HD 6850 - £118.40
Hard drive - Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB - £61

Think this all I will need (apart from a disc drive) any other hidden costs/ parts that I am missing out too?

Thanks

I noticed recently that my system and other folder names have changed on their own! What the -h- happened? I have never seen anything like this before. These folders appear on all of my drives c:, d:, g: and they are random. It looks like they are of another language, maybe? Actually, the wording makes no sense at all...> It looks like most of these folders previously existed.

Things I have done: Ran Anti-V program + Ewido Suite = No viruses, trojans, malware, etc. Ran three adware programs (ad-aware, spywareblaster, spyware doctor) = Clear. Checked all running processes and startup tab in mscofig = no peculiar programs detected. Ran regseeker = Phenominal amount of invalid keys, etc. (3,000+) very unusual to the norm!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

i am trying to copy some files from a windows 2000 pc to a novell 3.11 server, but when the file names are longer than 8 char i cant copy it.....how can i configure windows 2000 to convert those long files name in to short files names.

when i do it manualy it prompt me to automaticaly convert the names, but the problem is that i am copying the files using a batch and the batch just dont copy the files

Thanks

A:Convert long files names into short files names

It is generally not a good idea to truncate long filenames to 8x3 unless you have no other alternative. Perhaps you know that already, I apologize if I assume too much.

If you are certain that it is required to be in 8.3 format by the server, you can use a 16 bit copying program rather than the default Windows copy command. The Windows command detects the 32 bit environment and automatically uses a 32 bit copy procedure that preserves long filenames.

I would recommend using xxcopy16, which is a free utility. It comes as a component of a two part package, the other component being xxcopy. xxcopy is 32 bit, xxcopy16 is 16 bit. You get what you ask for when running those commands and the windows environment will not dictate selection.

The command line with xxcopy16 would be:

xxcopy16 <source> <destination> /yy /WV0

(That's a zero at the end and the command is case sensitive.)

XXCOPY

I REALLY WILL STOP SURFING PORN NOW

pops up new ie windows (not tabs) that link to random sites, often unknown search engines showing results for last string searched on google, often for other random things (news 6 live, adfat, sals barbershop). seemingly benign.

After some time of this, more serious infections occur, including antivirus soft, many others.

Malabytes will knock out what it brings in, but not kill the initial infection.

have run malabytes in safe mode, safe mode + neworking, and mutiple times after knocking out later more malicious infections in both safe mode and regular. Sometimes picks up a few stragglres, sometimes not. But in all cases I still have the original thing which pops up a new ie window to some odd thing and presumably opens the door for the rest.

Any help greatly appreciated, and, really, despite any other sex life to speak of, sad though that may be, I will leave the porn sites alone after this.

I've been trolling the forums here for a while. Lots of great info but now I actually have an issue where I need some assistance.

When I was booting one day last week I got a nasty BSOD when Windows was trying to load. Then on the next reboot Windows 7 said it couldn't load and needed to do the recovery OS option from the Windows 7 repair on the CD. Well, before trying that I did a cold reboot and it got back into the OS fine so I didn't think much of it. Now, I noticed Ghost shows the C: drive status as "Unavailable" and it can't back it up anymore. It does give me an option to restore from one of my old backups. I'm thinking the MBR got hosed up somehow or something like that. But I'm skeptical to run an MBR repair since I have that 100MB partition on my SSD where my OS resides.

This was about a week ago my Windows 7 started acting up right before the big patch Tuesday. I've been running it for over a year now and it's been solid. When I first set it up I installed it on my SSD (Intel 510 120GB) drive. One of the qualms I had with the install is Windows created a separate boot sector on the disk drive where it stored my boot files. This is known the the "system reserved" operating system files 100MB partition. Apparently the way to avoid this is to use a third party partition tool before doing the windows install. That way it will keep the Boot sector files on the same partition which is how I would of liked it for doing resto... Read more

My laptop is a HP Pavilion dm1, and has become extremely slow in the past few days. Also, there are some unknown processes shown in task manager, and some extensions in chrome that random pop-up tabs suggesting I may also like t read the following etc. This usually comes on Google results, YouTube, and other news articles.

I don't have access to the boot cd unfortunately.

I loaded up explorer and opened up my C:/ drive to start a game in my program files, accidentally pressing "Downloads" finding this file there, my operating system is Swedish so the folder should be named "Hämtningar" (Swedish for downloads). The file is 93 kb in size and was created on the 27th january, there is also an account named "Unknown account(S-1-5-21-a bunch of numbers)" with total control, I also have no ability to remove it. I would like some help with this, malwarebytes also doesn't react on it. I've also noticed I'm unable to visit Bing (not like I use it, but still weird) with the access denied error.

I'm not sure if this forum supports Windows installed on a MacBook,
but I'd appreciate any help provided.

Regarding my laptop, it's a MacBook Pro bought around 2011,
witn Windows 7 x64 installed from my friend's disc.
(Sorry I cannot remember exactly what it was)
"Barely alive" condition.
Works fine, but suddenly shuts down at times, alert shows battery not inserted (UNDETACHABLE on this MacBook model), won't run without power adapter connected, immediately shuts down when inserting USB cable into 1 of the 2 USB ports, won't detect internet connection, and so on and so on......

That aside, it worked fine until last week.

I was running Windows Update when I accidentally insert USB cable into the wrong port and "forced shut down" the laptop.

When rebooted, I get a flash of BSOD and auto-restart, which leads to startup repair.

From there, I ran startup repair a few times, each time I get the successful result yet Windows still won't start.

Then I switched to Mac OS to use it for some urgent stuff.
While in Mac OS I did went around and did "repair disk" and stuff to the bootcamp.

Next I tried searching for solutions through my phone and did this and that on command prompt.
chkdsk bootrec etc etc tried all posted solutions to something similar to my case.

The next thing I realized was that I now cannot even choose "Windows" on boot and I got stuck.

Then I asked my neighbor and fortunately could borrow Window... Read more

Please help me folks, I'm on borrowed time today.

I had to reformat my computer thanks to a handful of Trojans and of course, I am missing the Ethernet driver to connect. In the past, I had a friend set me up, but he never told me how to do it and he's gone in basic training so I can't ask for his help today.

I have a custom-built Compaq HP
I will have Windows XP HOME installed when I get the cash.

What I need is help figuring out where to look to find the model number to install the correct driver. I have tried the HP website and it does not work; My driver is built into the motherboard.

I currently have Windows XP Professional for English Students, it's my father's OS

I've just installed Windows 10 and experimented with the Groove music player. It finds all the songs but they are tagged Unknown Artist and Unknown Album. The songs appear fine in iTunes with the correct details and album art.

I reset Groove and made it scan the music directories again but the problem remains. Any solutions?

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 on a 500 Gig hard drive with 3 partitions. The problem is I marked one of the partitions, not Drive C, as "active" by mistake.I done a Command Prompt to make it "inactive", but when I started the system up again it wouldn't boot.I used the Vista disk for the recovery process, but I got a message "Operating system unknown on (unknown) local disk" i tried fixing the problem with a command prompt "bootrec/fix boot" ,but nothing happened. When I look at the info in Command Prompt it doesn't show the disk partitions, just Disk 0.Also I can't repair because no Disks are listed to be repaired. If I look at the drive in "My Computer" it is full with a file system marked as "Raw" and it wants me to format the drive.I used "Recover My Files" software and it shows some of the documents that are on the drive, but doesn't show any recovery.I looked at some internet post about the message I got and partition and boot problems like I have, but at this point I don't to try any else to make it worse.I would do a reinstall ,but on one of the drives I have some stuff that wasn't backed up.I never thought about backing it up because it wasn't on the C drive.Any help to solve this problem would be appreciated. ..........Kumpie

Welcome!

Try marking the C partition as active again, using the Windows method in my post here.

Then run Startup Repair from the repair disc. Hopefully it will see your installation.

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1. I ran HijackThis as you do and saw the following line which I removed.
Internet Settings, ProxyServer = 127.0.0.1:19876When running DDS in the dds.txt file I found these settings which may be unrelated but I cannot explain them.TCP: Interfaces\{5D969EFE-1A71-4BC0-950C-B6214B4FC1DD} : DHCPNameServer = 88.82.13.60 88.82.13.60When I found these items I ran CCleaner just to lighten the amount I needed to scan. Then I ran ComboFix and Malwarebytes Antimalware and found nothing. I then used GMER and removed a virtual cdrom that had been sitting on my computer long after Deamon Tools had been removed.
It is the proxy server that worries me. Doing a quick search of it there does seem to be a Trojan keylogger that will listen on that port.

My husband clicked on "yes" when he should have clicked "no" and wound up getting some type of virus (?). On the bottom of the screen, the time has changed to military time and right next to that it says "virus alert!" We were getting a screen that directed us to download "virus eliminator 2008" to get rid of the virus. Thats all I know about it. I purchased spyware doctor in hopes of getting rid of it, but that didn't work. It got rid of part of it, the 3 new icons on my desktop for scans, but that was it.
We are using windows xp on this computer. Not sure if this is enough information. One can only hope!

Alright, I give up, I have been trying to figure out whats wrong for a few days now. I've read over a fair bit of your forums, but haven't been able to figure out whats got me. I'm running Windows 2000, everything is updated except for a few securtiy updates becuase the windows update was telling me they could not install. Ran spybot, adaware, all that stuff. My homepage keeps getting changed. It seems to do it at night every day, but it could just be when I'm noticing it. I also keep getting adware installed o my computer. So heres my log, hopefully someone can figure out what I can't. Thanks

Like most others, I too have experienced less than mediocre support from MS on this issue.  It's clear that their current business model is not to serve the customer base, only sell more product with the belief that the problem will eventually go
away.  Well, it seems that since MS will not go away, then I will.  I have owned systems supported by MS since 1983 and have been a loyal customer ever since until recently.  I, fortunately, am not encumbered by much PC hardware so my next step
is to migrate to the Mac environment.  Many of my friends and family have made the transition and although the entry cost is slightly higher, they are continually rewarded by the quality of and provided support to Mac products.  It's a shame that
MS has gone the way of many past successful businesses.  It's like the aristocracy who, in their early days, worked hard to acquire their silver, their next generation admired the silver, while the following generation merely polished it.  It won't
be long before the current generation starts to sell their silver.  A clear absence of innovation and concern for the supporting consumer base.

Hi,

I soon will have a Pentium 1Ghz machine with 512MB ram to give away to the needy. I have a choice of OS to use:

1). Windows XP. I have one copy of XP Home left. But I don't really like the idea of giving away an unsecure OS. Heck, even the Windows Update crashed last time I tried to do an update after fresh install. If you can't do the basic windows update after a fresh install, the box is unsecurable.

2). CentOS 5.5. I tend to use this Linux distro for anything I intend to keep for a while, because it is the down line of Red Hat. So everything that Red Hat updates, CentOS gets it also. It has SELinux.

3) Fedora 14. This is the latest version from Fedora. Red Hat ( same org ) uses Fedora to test out new ideas. So the admin controls are a different from CentOS. It also has the latest greatest SELinux policies. The con is that it uses a little more ram. Also, the online updates only lasts for 13 months. After that date, I think no more security updates are put out. I think the idea is that you are supposed to keep installing newer versions.

4) Unbuntu 10.03 LTS. Ubuntu is well liked by many people and I have used it for a short while some time ago. If I remember correctly, Unbuntu doesn't have any listening services installed by default. And that is why they don't even bundle a firewall with it. LTS means long term support, and it lasts 3 years for desktop installations.

I am thinking that people won't want to update their OS too frequently,... Read more

A:What OS should I give away?

Well, I have settled on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Support for that release will last till April 2014 - a good 3 years. Fedora 14 changed too many things, and even a seasoned admin would have to wade thru mountains of man pages. They changed the way services are done, and its not the good old /etc/init.d way of doing things. Also, their LiveCD did not bundle Openoffice, which I think many people would need. CentOS distributes via a single DVD or 7 CDs, there's no 1 CD installer, and that machine doesn't have a DVD drive. Also Red Hat delivers security patches too slowly for my taste. Like when there's a new Firefox release, other distros will hop to it, while Red Hat takes its time. Well, as for XP, I deem that unsecure. With XP, its patch or die. There are no other defences available internally like Protected Mode or Services Hardening or ASLR in Vista and Win7. On the Linux side, they have had ASLR for ages, and also they have had SELinux for some years now, which I consider as a fine grained superset of windows' protected mode.

I have given some thought about giving away Linux in general. It has GUI for many things now, and its not as if you have to go edit .conf files manually to get things working. A reasonably experienced Windows person can configure the networking if they know the basic networking concepts. After that, they can solve problems from the web or go to the ubuntu forums.

Any feedback is welcome. There is time for changes. It's still a mont... Read more

IE got hijacked a while back by "protect.advancedcleaner.com" I was using FF most of the time anyhow so I closed out IE and let it go. I did try removal and could not find it.
Recently one of my kids must have downloaded something because I suddenly have a ton of IE pop ups and spybot is going ballistic with url.adtrgt.com and is insinuating other websites into it.
Im running XP Pro on an older PC. If you need more info on the PC will give it to you, but in the meantime I have got to find the problems before I get totally tired and just redo the entire OS.....Somedays it doesn't pay to be a parent

My problem is when I'm playing CS:S (counter strike source) or Team Fortress Classic it takes me to my desktop during game play and then back to my game. It's like it's alt tabbing out. After 51, view of this question, no one has answered. Should I just assume that it's not fixable? It seemed like such a simple question originally. However, after 45 mins. with my ISP, it's still resolved.

I recently disconnected my router as I no longer need a network (only one computer). I attached my DSL modem directly to the computer and can connect fine manually when I click on the DSL connection icon.

I would like to have it automatically connect when I start the computer. I have the broadband set as my default and I have checked "always dial my default connection" in Internet options. I have also turned off the prompt for name and password. Also, the shortcut is in my start-up folder.

Basically, I just don't want the minor inconvenience of always have to manually connect. This forum has helped me before so I have hope you can help me again.

Leslie

A:Should I just give up on trying to fix this?

Reconnect the router even though only one PC is involved.

It does no harm and it will keep the connection open for you.

A:Pop-ups will not Give up . . .

hi, welcome to TSG.
update and run spysweeper, it looks like you have the l2me infection which spysweeper can clean! And your right it is that 020 entry!
go to this site and download these tools and once you get both
adaware Se 1.6 and spybot, update both of them.

Set adaware to do a full system scan and deselect, "search for neglible risk
entries". Click next to start the scan. Delete everything adaware finds.

reboot and now run spybot

Spybot: Search and destroy.

Delete what spybot finds marked in red. After updating spybot hit the
immunize button.

reboot again
With CWshredder close all browsers and programmes and select the FIX button.

Go here and download Microsoft Antispyware Beta. First in the top menu click
File then Check for updates to download the definitons updates.

After updating look in the right side of the main window under "Run Quick
Scan Now" and click Spyware scan options. In that window put a tick by Run a
full system scan and then put a check by all three options below that then
click Run Scan now.

When the scan is finished, let it fix anything that it finds (have it
quarantine the items that have that option rather than delete just in case.
It is a beta program and there may be false positives)

Restart your computer.
All tools can be downloaded at the link below and found on that page!

Dell Dimension 8250 XP Home SP3

Was working fine. Last change was the installation of Super Anti Spyware free edition. The next day, on start up, there was a request for user name and password. A password was never given to this computer, and without one you cannot proceed past this request.

Everyone I've talked with doesn't believe installing the spyware is the culprit. I don't either. How can I get past this password request and into the computer? I don't think the owner has an OS disk. No files have been backed up, and I just learned XP Home does not create a Windows Old folder when doing a reinstall.

A:Can't Give What I ain't Got

First, leave the password field blank when asked. Does the computer log you in?
If not, Restart the computer and press F8 at bootup. Go to the Advanced Boot Menu. Choose Safe Mode. Log in as the Built in Administrator (again, leave the password field blank, unless you set a password for Administrator previously) In Safe Mode, go to Start/Run and type control userpasswords2 Here, highlight your user account and Reset Password (leave it blank if you want). Then un-check Users must enter a user name and password to enter this computer. When asked for password, again leave it blank if you did not set one.

Ok, title is a bit exaggerated, but still.

For some reason, all of a sudden, Vista x64 Ultimate seems to think that I am NOT connected to the internet, when I actually am. The network tray icon does NOT display the little globe that indicates that it detects the internet. Contrary to this, I am connected to the internet 100%, and my internal network (regular workgroup) is fully functional; all other computers are recognizable and file transfers work perfectly. My connection is Verizon FIOS, and my router is a D-Link DGL-4500.

I tried EVERYTHING I could think of, which includes, but is not limited to:

1. Reset the router.
2. Try all different types of DNS on the router and on the computer,
3. Release and renew ALL IPs (this fixes it until the next reboot)
4. Clearing and reregistering the DNS cache
5. Revoking and assigning new internal IPs to the computer
6. Deleting and reinstalling the network card via Device Manager
7. Rebuilding the Winsock 2 and TCP/IP Stack
8. System Restore to a KNOWN WORKING time

If I do get the little globe to be displayed on the network, it's only momentarily (a few minutes), before it disappears.

The ONLY way that I can get it "fixed" for sure, is to release and renew the IP address, and this only works until the next reboot, when it goes right back to the same behavior.

One thing I should mention is that before all this, I was experimenting both on the router level as well as through Vista itself, with OpenDNS. I admit that I did... Read more

A:Just about to give up and cry...

Well to be honest, I have no idea why you're having this problem. Network troubleshooting isn't really my thing.

I only have a couple of ideas:

1) Try a repair from the Vista CD or WinRE.

2) Contact Microsoft about the problem. They're offering free support for Vista. Getting a reply from them only takes about a day in my experience. Here's the link:

Help and Support

3) Reinstall Vista?

Hello, I have come to the conclusion there is nothing I can do with my computer to make it acceptable for my use.Plus,I need to be mobile so a lappy I need. My use, well I am heavily into photography and craftwork, some digital video.I need to use the computer as my portfolio, and a means to play with my photos and store etc, plus the ability to go online that is about it.

My budget is about £400, (I sold my car to get this amount). Can anyone give me some idea of the minimum spec computer I should look for in laptop form. Also for my budget, can I get a reasonable or even good photo crunching machine.Programs I run include;photoshop, picassa, dreamweaver etc.

Games, all the rest of the usual stuff I do not need,as they are not really of interest.

OK here's the deal I recently reformatted my computer and everything was fine until I tried to start it up today...it starts up and goes to the desktop but after about 1min it shuts down and starts back up again :( I have tried just about everything I could I usually can fix these things on my own but I need help with this one...hence this post

Specs: Winxp home, 1.6Ghz processor, 512mb Ram, 80G HD, hp pavilion 750n

Things I've tried: I have tried to go into my computer properties and change the system restart on system fail check box, I have ran Winsock xp fix, I have let it cool off a bit but the time it takes to restart stays the same, I've ran it in safe mode and it doesn't shutdown unless I run it in safe mode with networking, I've defraged in safe mode, I have all updated drivers and Sp3, I've ran event manager and nothing was wrong...

I hope that you can help me without telling me it's a hardware problem. Thank you for taking time to look at my post and if you need any more information just ask

A:I give up

Just a hunch, but try unplugging your Ethernet cable or disabling wireless, disconnect from the internet entirely and try booting. Also, run an antivirus scan if you can.

Something that may help is going to Start > Run > msconfig and going to the startup tab and the services tab. Disable all of the programs that you don't want or need. This may or may not fix anything, but it will lighten the load on your PC. I'm pretty sure 512MB of RAM is plenty for XP, but anything under 1GB concerns me .

I've been having loads of problems with my PC, getting download droppers, worms...all sorts!! I supposedly updated my spyware programs (spybot and adaware) and also my AVG but somehow they had been disabled. After 2 days trying all sorts to get rid of it (including disabling my restore points etc) I gave in and decided to start anew...formatted my hard drive...reinstalled windows XP with service pack 1, installed AOL (which I'm beginning to hate) along with all my usual..Norton...adaware and spybot but as soon as I signed on the net I got a warning saying I had Maslan C @mm again!!!
How did this happen? I get diverted everytime I try to go to the Windows page for SP2. Here's my HJT Log. I hope someone can help...Looks extensive for 1 day back on a supposedly clean PC which is running as fast as a snail with a brick on its back!

It has been a week since i've been trying to figure this thing out. First it started off with a virus called "braviax", which i removed using !killbox. Then i started getting "system32\services.exe status code -1073741819 Windows will shut down in 60 seconds" something like that. So i stopped that by cmd "shutdown -a". But my internet is still extremely slow like 14.4kb dial up. But i tested my speed on speakeasy.net and my dl speed was at 6.5mb and upload at 1.5 mb which is normal. I ran symantec, spy eraser, avast, adware SE, etc.... and of course the reason why i'm writing this right now is because nothing is fixing this problem. I'm out of ideas. So I came to you guys. Any helpful replies will be greatly appreciated!!!

ok i don;t know if i'm posting in the right section of the forum but...vista was acting weird, it wasn't restarting, it wasn't doing other things that it should be doing. So as a last resort, after i had tried everything(i'm not a computer tech so everything to me is probably not "everything") but i popped the vista cd in and i reinstalled the system..NOT knowing that the bugger would delete ALL my files. I don't recall XP doing that.anyway..so onto the questions...

...if the files got deleted, why is my hard drive still pretty full? wouldn't it be pretty empty?are the files stored away and i can't see them?
...where is that scroller thing that goes at the side/top/bottom with the icons? how do i get it back?
...where is the auto page finder for the internet? or maybe that's just a firefox thing?

excuse my lack of computer technicality in wording...i'm tired of browsing the net for answers

thanks for the help

I have joined so many message boards and asked so many different people but no one can seem to tell me why I have this problem. I just installed my dvd burner and when I burn the dvds they play on my PC DVD player and not in my home dvd player.
I have tried in newer DVD players and it doesnt work, I have burned on both DVD+Rs and DVD-Rs and they dont work (even though the manual says that they will read them) and nothing seems to work.
It is obviously burning if you can play it on the computer but why wont it work in the home dvd player?
People have told me to finalize the DVD but there is no option to finalize with my program, DVD Cloner 2, and the dvd drive opens after it is done burning anyway so I assume that it automatically finalizes it. SOMEONE HELP MEEEE

A:No one can give me help!

Although u r using discs which are compatible with a particular dvd-player, it's what you are putting on the discs which may not be compatible, hence the dvd-player cannot read them. For example, your pc will play an 'avi' file which is on a dvd, but few if any dvd-players will play it. It's possible the application u r using is not creating a proper dvd-video. DVD-cloner creates a copy of a dvd-video by compressing the original (otherwise it wouldn't fit on a single-layer DVD). It's this compressed-format which is probably causing the incompatibility (most likely it's in DivX format which requires a dvd-player which can play DivX --- these are available but by no means standard.

Damn these windows computers!!!!!

After beating myself over the head repetedly with windows 98, I recently chose to use windows 2000, based on it's much better reputation for stability.

Ha!! So much for reputations! - This thing did not last two months!!!

Anyway, I have Win200 SP4 loaded. Norton Anitvirus and Systemworks is current and updated.

Two hard drives. Drive 0 has two partitions. The Win2000 partition is about 20 gig. The remainder is data and some programs.

Drive 1 has two partions and some unnalocated space. Partition one is my data. Partition two is a packup partition that was created with partition magic.

This may or not be related, but last night, the PC was on and I had a program and a data file open. Program on one drive, data on the other. I was away from the PC and heard a loud "pop" from the vecinity of the PC. I am not sure the location of the noise, but it sounded to me like a capacitor popping. The PC was unaffected and later, I edited some data and closed it down normally. I did not notice any smell of oil or other electrical smoke.

Today, I get home from work and fire it up. Windows loads and gives me a message that the profile could not be loaded and a default on ewill be used. Any changes made will not be saved.

I rebooted hoping it would clear itself up, but it got worse. Now, the "DOS" screen loads, then the "windows" screen loads, but then I get a blue screen with a message that appears very briefly and t... Read more

Ok, first of all I want to say that I am not at all experienced in the 'forum' world, so if I am doing something wrong, please forgive me and gently nudge me in the right direction.

Second, I am about to pull my hair out because of my machines. I have two machines, each used by multiple users, and I feel I am constantly chasing my tail trying to keep them free of 'issues'. You would think I would be an expert myself on all of this stuff, but sadly, I am far from it. So I am here asking for some help. If anyone would be so kind as to go through my post here, and offer me some remedies on this first machine, I would be oh so grateful.

Now, having read through some other threads, it seems posting my hijack this here is a big help, so I am going to start with that and see were that gets me. Oh, btw, I run Adaware, and Spybot on a fairly regular basis, and I have Norton as well as the Comcast security manager....but honestly, this doesnt even seem to slow this stuff down anymore.

Thanks in advance.

A:Im about to give up trying to do this myself

Hi and welcome to TSF!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Well, I have given up on vista after two weeks. Reasons:

1. Proved very difficult to install.

2. When installed - many recent programs now did not function - requiring purchase of new products.

3. Over the two week period Vista (this is the all singing Ultimate edition, by the way) became increasingly unstable - many crashes and simple actions locking up the machine e.g using file manager - this either just locked up or stopped responding - unable to open or attach files in Outlook for instance, the list goes on!

4. I decided to give it one more chance and did a full re-install (now dual boot - just in case) - this produced more errors:

a. Vista loaded from DVD as did Office 2003 - on next reboot the DVD now could not be accessed - Vista insisted it was working OK.

So - after another expensive experience with Microsoft - I have returned to XP. All my programs now work as they should.

By the way - my machine is newly built with an Athlon 3700+ processor 3GB ram - 250GB HD 256mb Graphics card.

I strongly recommend staying away from vista until it, at least works properly, not requiring many frustrating hours trying to get simple things to work. Hey! I can live without the pretty Aero desktop and the gadgets - rubbish!

Cheers!

Mike

Usually i figure out how to fix computer problems by playing around with things learning things about the computer myself and try to fix the problem that way. This is the first time i have ever had to come to some type of tech support because i have absolutely no idea what is wrong with this. My connection seems to be slow and i get random drops. It only happens on my computer.... i have two other friends who use my connection and they have no problems what so ever.

This is my setup, please excuse the bad diagram.

Cable Modem----------------Wireless N Router))))) (((((XP Pro with Wireless N Adapter----------------Wireless G Router/Switch------------Other Computers

Basically I want all of these machines on the same network.

I can connect the XP Pro machine to the N router, share the internet connection with ICS. The problem is that I also have a laptop and an Xbox 360 that I connect to the N router and I need all of these machines to be able to communicate with each other. Is there any way of doing this wihtout having to purchase N adapters for all of my machines??

Thanks

A:I give up

You could bridge the connections in the XP machine. Then the secondary router would be programmed to be a WAP as follows.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

This procedure bypasses the routing function (NAT layer) and configures the router as a switch (or wireless access point for wireless routers).

Hello,

My son was using my computer this Saturday and he clicked on a game to see what it was and was brought to a download page.  He came to me immediately not knowing what to do.  It was for a favorite console game of his, so I looked around online at the company and website and saw it written up as reputable.  Being that it was a reputable company, I decided to download the game figuring it was a limited version, but something he may enjoy none-the-less.

Yes, of course, I was duped and now my internet is virtually useless.  A page called v9.com kept coming up so I looked into that and proceeded to do a search for and delete everything in my computer that had anything to do with the game and v9.

I have only been using the computer sporadically, but I realized that if I clicked a link on a page, it would also open up another page that I did not ask for.  I keep getting grey boxes that tell me I may have a spyware or malware - no kidding - and to call (...)  I also realized that if I typed in the web address or copy/pasted it and then went to the page rather than following a link, the unasked for pages and pop-ups did not seem to happen.

Today it seems to be getting worse instead of better.  I went through my files and pulled up anything modified on Saturday and deleted all files at (or after) the time period of 9pm when the problem (me being an idiot) occurred. It seemed to briefly stop once aga... Read more

For over three weeks now I've been trying to repair the damage done to my laptop by some rather nasty virus/trojans/spyware/etc.

I was able to remove all the viruses and whatnot but ever since then my internet connection has been acting terribly. The internet seems to be completely inaccessable except for AIM. My AIM works for instant messaging but it can't send files. Any installers or anything I run that require a download of components just times out. My Internet Explorer 6 browser refuses to browse the internet. It just sits and loads the page for like 5 minutes and then either stays loading indefinitely or stops, unable to load the page.

When I do a netstat on the cmd prompt I get this:

Hello
This may be a rather lengthy post, and i hope im posting in the right category. I have Windows XP Home Edition, and a few weeks ago started having some problems, I ran virus programs, and spyware and ad-aware and alot was caught, and while some of the problems subsided...things still weren't right...my internet explorer seemed to be the thing that caused the most problems...I found a tech site...(not this one) by accident and thought what the hell let me see if someone can help. It was discovered I had a hijacker...and so I downloaded a program that the tech told me to, (and i think i saw it referenced here in another post) I posted the log, and was told to remove things here and there and rerun the scan etc. During this scan there was an error message that referred me to www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm to which i went. There were four files that came up and the tech told me to remove them..they are as follows: mswsock.dll, winrnr.dll, lspak.dll and rsvpsp.dll....after i did that, i couldn't log back into the internet. I thougth it was my cable company and my cable modem, so I called them..they had me look at a few things and told me my isp was locked and a tech needed to come out and do something with drivers. soooooooo my question is..did i cause myself not to be able to get on the internet by removing these items? I am at work now on that computer, and can't even figure out why i can't go on dial up at home to try to get online. Can i fix it without bein... Read more

I'm usually decent at figuring out minor problems with my computer, but I can't seem to figure out the problem here.

I am able to surf the web wonderfully on most sites. However, I've noticed I can't even get into google.com or cnn.com, for example. I can't search for it and then click through that way either, this is especially problematic because I use gmail and am unable to reach it.

I've run Spybot, Adaware, and my anti-virus. They always seem to find a few things and delete them. It's weird because I can run Adaware, find maybe 10 things, then 10 minutes later find another 10... even when I haven't downloaded anything. I'm sure I have some virus or something, but nothing I'm running can fix it, and it's weird because I can go on Yahoo's sites, for example, and have no problem whatsoever.

I even tried a different browser, Firefox, and have the exact same problem. Does anyone have any recommendations for me? Thanks in advance.

Here is my HJT log, in case that helps:

My girlfriends computer was messed up. I think it has a virus so I tried installing a Virus scanner (AVG) it won't let me install it. Ok I did Ad-aware, spybot and the new MIcrosoft one, nothing worked. I finally tried Hijack this, recorded the log put it on that Hijack website that tells me whats good or bad and removed the bad files. Uninstalled this ad program Aurora or something like that and everything worked. She said it was working perfectly and alot faster. She booted the computer this morning and ran an ad-aware scan and says there is like 100 and sometihng now . Whe nlast night I ran it and it only came out like 48 or so. She said she only went to two websites last night and I don't think neither of those sites had to do with anything. Anyways but the bigger problem is , is that when she boots up the computer and clicks on something it restarts her computer!

Help!

I've been trying to work with that computer for soooo long and I'm going to go crazy.

The main computer which resides in the living room of my house seems to be having odd issues with the hard drive. It has been running non-stop for the 3 years we have had it (except for very few restarts and some shut-downs that lasted no more than a day).
The HDD has been revving up and gets loud when it does for 5 minutes straight, sometimes when it gets to revving up it loud-quiet-loud-quiet in 1 second intervals for 5 minutes as well.
Will it need to be replaced?

System specifications:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x86 / Ubuntu 10.04 (partion does not come up when booting)
HDD: 488GB Western Digital
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ Windsor 90nm Technology
Motherboard: ASUSTek Computer Inc. NARRA2 (Socket AM2)
RAM: 3.0 GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 312MHz (5-5-5-15)
Chipset/Graphics: E2350 Integrated @ 1280 x 960

A:HDD about to give-out?

It would present this condition if it were:

Full to capacity
Severely fragmented
Had some Search Enhancement crapware run amok
Dying drive motor

Leaving the drive on for three years is BETTER for the assembly than repeated power cycles IMO.

Run a SMART test and see what you get.

And backup.

Windows XP Home.

Firefox (latest version).

Getting the same re-directs through google search results as so many others here. I've tried following the advice in other threads so I wouldn't have to bother you with my problem but I'm not having any luck.

Thank you ever so much for any help you can provide.

I will patiently await your instructions.

I have a Dell laptop with XP. It is sooo slow, I checked startup and took anything off that wasn't necessary. I have numerous popups and pages just change into something else. I have a regscan and it always comes up with the exact same problems after it claims to have fixed them. I just don't know what to do any more. Any help much appreciated. Many thanks.

I turned on computer today and I saw that I have two mouses on screen. My main mouse is movable and I can work normally with it, but second one is stuck on top left corner and it's copying my main mouse icon (hand, arrow, typing icon).

And then I don't know why but I have looked into System Resolution control panel and I saw that I have a third monitor that weren't supposed to be there. Resolution is 640x480, and it's number 1, and my primary monitor is number 2.

I can't turn off that monitor ("Show picture just on 1" (my primary monitor)) like I had it before.
I am posting screenshots.

I am sorry for my English, because English is not my primary language.

I have Norton (on windows 8.1) and the only file Norton doesn't list a Trust level (shows Unknown) is the file app2.ini.exe (also app2.ini.exe.aux) and the only info I can find on the net is that viruses sometimes are named this to Hide.
Does anyone know what this file does?  Can I delete it?  Is it safe?
I called Microsoft and they said that these files aren't one of theirs (???).
Norton also lists this file isn't on a lot of peoples computers, which is a red flag.

Recently I've been doing some upgrading to my 3 year old desktop computer. Went from 750gb Harddrive to 1tb...Switched out graphic card Nvidia Geforce 8500GT 512mb for Nvidia Geforce 9500GT 1gb

I'm interested in replacing the motherboard, processor, and adding more memory. I don't want to do all this at the same time so initially what I get would have to be an upgrade but would still have to be compatible with what I have currently.

Would like to have 8gb memory, & faster processor by the end of it...

Firstly though would like to replace the motherboard (it's older and I've been having problems that might be associated with it). I have a HP Pavillion m9200t so whatever motherboard that would fit that case is what I'm looking for. Has to be able to hold 8gb of memory DDR2 800ghz. My video card is a PCI-e so would need a slot for that...and at the very least 4 x usb. I have windows vista 64-bit home prem and have had no problems with this os and probably going to keep it as appose to buying windows 7.

I've noticed that you can buy motherboards as a separate or bundled with CPU. With that in mind I'm thinking I should get a bundled package??? I'm looking to get something that will work good, last awhile (another 3 years or more???) but isn't extremely expensive or too top of the line. I heard ASUS was a good brand.

I have to say I've switched out parts on desktops like harddrive, memory, videocard, cd drive, power ... Read more

Hey techies,
I've recently acquired a bunch of old motherboards, RAM and modem components, and I want to be able to do something cool with them as a little project but this is my first venture into anything like this - I'm fine with investing money into this as well.

Any ideas?

A:What can I do with old PC parts?
