I have a Samsung s2 1tb external hard drive.

Today when I hooked it up to my laptop it would not load. It will shows local F drive when it usually will say samsung Drive.

A pop up box will then appear stating "you need to format drive"

I know if I reformat it I will lose all my data which I will not do.

When I look in device manager it states that the external hard drive is installed.

I attempted to go through start menu and type cmd then F: and it states "The volume does not recognize this system file. Please make sure all required system drivers are loaded and the volume is not corrupted."

PLEASE HELP I DONT WANT TO LOSE ALL MY FILES

A:Samsung s2 external hard drive not loading showing local disk F drive

With the external drive connected, Go to Disk Management (Start > type: "computer" > click on Computer Management > click on Disk Management)

Determine which disk is the external drive.
If the external drive shows here as a healthy volume, Right click on the large box to the right of the "Disk 1" / "Disk 2" lable and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

If there is nothing but a grey box or "Unallocated Space" next to the disk number then Right click on the disk number (the box) and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

Change the drive letter to anything else > OK.

If you can't do any of the above post back. If you can post a screen shot of the Disk Management window that can help.
Do not initialize the disk or format it or you will lose your data.

The 32-gigabyte (GB) NAND flash-based solid state disk (SSD) can upload and download data quickly and quietly as it uses instantly-accessible static NAND flash memory instead of the rotating discs found in hard drives.

SSD weighs only half as much as a hard drive, reads data three times faster and writes data 1,5 times quicker, it said.

It consumes a mere five percent of the electricity needed to power a hard disk drive and operates silently as it requires no motor or any other noise-making parts.

A:Samsung develops drive to replace hard disk

Awesome. Solid-state memory needs to replace ferromagnetic plates of glass. Methinks this step in technology is long overdue.

I know about the immediate 'loss' of disk space owing to the two different methods of measurement. 1Tb to 931Gb - it's annoying, but I'm used to it.

No, before a defrag by Fixbee I had 701Gb free, afterwards - in a matter of 2 hours - I had 537Gb. Obviously, I'm not going to use this product again, where a clean-up is obviosly a 'dirt up', but how do I undo the damage that it's caused - especially if it's not the only 'clean up' tool that might do this?

A:Loss of disk space on Samsung external 1TB drive after 'clean up'

Check with WinDirStat what's eating all the space. http://windirstat.info/

Problems on initializing Samsung 80GB with Samsung's Disk Manager: Ontrack(tm)

Hi!

There is some problem on my 80gb Samsung HD. The situation is this:

I have had an old computer which have an ancient motherboard.. because of the limitations of motherboard it was initializing Hd as 8gb.. I installed Samsung's Disk Manager program named Ontrack. It does something with the MBR to make the 8gb initialized HD as 80gb! When you're in bios setup, it says your samsung is 8gb but when you reset and wait for the system disk error message Ontrack activates and then your hd is 80 gb, you can install OS after that.

Here is the problem: I bought a new computer whose motherboard to initialize my 80GB hd as 80GB also, but things didn't happen like that. On bios setup it says my HD is 33gb.

I plugged the HD to my other computer and its partition magic 8 says "33gb BAD" also..

A modified MBR by a program (ontrack) can fool bios setup? if so, can i use XP CDs system recovery console with fixmbr command? ?f it is not how can i make my hd back to normal (not for old motherboards, initialized as 80GB)??

New motherboard is MSI RS482M2-IL and because of this problem I cannot enable S.M.A.R.T. feature. I need help and thanks from now on!

A:Problems on initializing Samsung 80GB with Samsung's Disk Manager: Ontack(tm)

If you are using XP then boot fromt eh XP Cd. Then delete the existing partition and create a new one and format that.

I have a second-hand 170N that doesn't respond to Plug and Play. There is a message wandering about the screen saying that the preferred format is 1280X1024 but setting the screen there doesn't help. In any case, I want 1024X768. I could use some advice and and/or a link to where I might download the installation disk. I found several Samsung links out of the downloaded installation manual, but the only ones that respond are in Korean and Chinese, languages not in my skill set.

Yesterday while watching movie on my PC it appeared as black on the screen and stopped working. After restarting the PC it was not responding as the BIOS was unable to recognize the hard disk. It creates an unusual sound while BIOS searches drives.

1. I tried by bootting the PC using another hard disk but this HD does not appear in the windows.
2. I also tried to boot using Ubuntu live CD but failed to find my HD on it.

As it is not recognized by BIOS, I cann't use data recovery software to recover the data. I'm badly in need of all data in it.

Please someone help me in this regard to recover the data.

Try the freezer trick. Place your hard drive in zip lock freezer bag to protect it from moisture and freeze it overnight (or a few hours at least). Quickly hook up the frozen hard drive and try to boot from it. If it works, be prepared to copy your important data as soon as possible before the hard drive warms up too much. This is not a permanent fix but it may work long enough to save your data.

This sounds straight forward, but I can not figure this out I am new to this. I have a Etower 500 MHz with 192 mb's of memory and 4 gig hard drive. I used partition magic 3.5 to partition the drive inorder to try and install DOS and win98 and maybe linux. I am following the instructions from this web site here>> http://www.xperts.co.za/multi-boot/ I am using the disks that I made from downloading from this site referring to REUEL Boot disk this disk took me through the entire process. It all went great until I rebooted and I keep getting Non-System disk or disk error I have no disk's in the drives. I even installed win98 and all it did was go straight to windows. With in windows I could see the drives I partitioned all of them except the one that windows was actually on. I have done this again and again trying to see if I did anything wrong. Anybody know what is wrong?
Also can anyone tell me how to get free dos I can not figure out what files to download. The one that I am trying to install now is suppose to be mini dos 6.22. I am really new to dos so I am doing a lot of guessing.

The Background :
I built my new P4(3GHz) System in Dec 04. I used the same old 80Gb HDD

I got KTs in Second Yr Engineering which resulted in, me facing my Dad's

Now all I'm left with is a broken cabinet, Cracked MB, non-working FX5700

The Problem :
Apparantly the HDD survived all that (although the plastic around the bus
attachment area was a little broken)

It was working fine. But now after taking a 4 weeks gap to cool things down
WinXp just showed the Partitions for about a Min and it showed no more.
The Bios & XP Device manager shows the HDD, U can feel it working, but it

If you feel confident enough, Open it up and remove the hard drive from inside the enclosure and fit it directly in to your pc.

This will help determine if the hard drive or enclosure is to blame.

A:Hard disk failure warning - Samsung HD103SJ

You can't fix a failing hard-drive, I would suggest backup all your important files and data, and then run some hard-drive diagnostics to assess the situation better:

Run some hard-drive diagnostics and follow these steps:Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure
Find your hard-drive manufacturer and run their tests.

Additional Tests:SeaTools for DOS | Seagate

I recently moved from a hard drive to a SSD . Unfortunately, the Samsung data migration tool didn't move my second drive. This was not surprising, as I had used Ext2 Volume Manager to mount the Ubuntu partition I had in dual boot. The software told me that it would be empty, but I decided to go ahead after backing up my programs and data.

My current problem is that I have a drive U:\ that shows up in explorer, but not in Disk Management. Also, it contains zero bytes, so it is of no practical value. I would like to hide it, but using Disk Management doesn't work. I would prefer not to need to download a tool etc. Any ideas?

One option is to put in a good external DVD player using USB port. The other option is to put and interal DVD player in an external enclosure and use the second SATA port to run it. You may need to run a power extension also.

Hey guys, I recently out of the blue started getting this error at complete random: "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive\Device\Harddisk1\DR1" This pop up takes me out of whatever game or anything I'm doing which is why it's so annoying. When I click cancel it happens again except it says dr2, then again dr3, dr4, dr5 which is 5 times I have to click cancel. It then goes away for a random amount of time, but it will pop up later. This can get extremely annoying. I can leave my computer with nothing going on for like 8 hours straight, and then out of the blue this error occurs. I don't know what is causing it. The CD/DVD is recognised in Device Manager and says that it is working properly. the only way I can get the CD to be recognised after inserting the CD is by going to the Device Manager and double clicking the CD/DVD line to open 'properties'. At that point itunes asks me if i want to import.

The drive is a Samsung SH-223L.

A:Help, Samsung Hard Drive

How is it formatted FAT32 or NTFS? This could make a difference to the amount of space available.

Additionally the 160Gb is likely to have been reported using a base of 1000. e.g. 1000 bytes to a kilobyte, 1000 kilobytes to a megabyte etc. rather than the computing form of 1024

Therefore 130Gb useable could be quite accurate

So yea thats the drive I have on my computer, had it for about 9-10 months. Woke up this morning to play a game in my disc drive to have my computer say, "Hey enter the disc". Open the drive and the disc is in there, so I closed it and still nothing.

Looked on my computer and it shows now Blu-ray Drive under my HDD

Look in my device manager and nothing shows up there as well.

Downloaded the drivers from here only to be told there is no drive detected.

I checked all my connections tried them in different ports on the mobo. I tried different cables still nothing. There is power to the drive because I can open and close it and I hear it reading the disc it just wont send the info to my mobo.

Any advice here would be great.

There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive D:.

Pressing the buttons does not make the popup go away, but inserting a disk into the drive and pressing continue causes the popup to go away and netstat/ab to run. Please help!

I have a Samsung SV0322A hard drive which is 3.2 gig. I read in the drives manual (on the samsung website) that the drives maximum capacity is 6.4Gig... I don't get it.
I have Windows XP installed on the drive, and therefore I don't have very much room left on the drive after I have installed the software that I need.
Can anyone tell me a way that I can compress the hard drive, but without slowing the system down too much?

A:Samsung SV0322a Hard drive

Samsung SV0322A is only a 3.2 gig drive. the 32 in the serial number indicate that, if it where sv0642a then it would be a 6.4 gig.

Compression is really a good thing to stay away from.
In my opinion I would get a larger hard drive and clone the existing to it

I don't beleive xp will work with a compressed drive anyway

i rang samsung and they sent me a new one under warrenty...

the new one broke a month later!

but now when i tried to RMA it through their website it says they cannot replace it because it was sent from the USA - i emailed them and they said the same thing in their email.

So now i cant replace the drive because they sent it from another country?

is there anything i can do?

surly thats not right - was a new drive and they chose to send it from the USA not me.

Thank you

Timez

A:Samsung sent me a new sata hard drive...

You should CALL the company and speak with a live person or two or three to get it resolved.

Have you had your computer physically checked for problems that could be causing the hard drives to fail? If there is no fault in the hardware (or user error)...the drives could have both been from a "faulty batch of hard drives."

Does Samsung have a policy regarding how many drives can be returned in a certain time period?

Hello everybody here, I really need your help.. I hope someone here, with a great computer skill can help me solve my problem. Here is the situation:
I am using Samsung Series 5 Laptop. I have 2 partitions, with one system drive, and another one is my data drive it have 320 GB more data.
I am doing a recovery mode to reinstall the Windows 7 Home Premium that come with my laptop.
I press the F4 to enter recovery mode, and it is reinstall all my Windows, and everything come very clean with some junk software from Samsung.
But then, i reallize that my data drive is not shown in My Computer. So i search in Disk Management, and found that the drive have no letter attact to it, i right click the drive, but there is only help menu that pop up.
I don't know how to get my data back, i try to boot with kaspersky rescue disk, but it also cannot see my data.
Can you help me to show the drive again, and not damaging the data inside it, because i really need them.
I already search in Google, but nothing can be sure my data will be ok..

I cloned a Samsung SSD 840 Evo with the operating system Windows 7 on a Samsung SSD 850 of the same capacity (120 GB).
I did this several times with different programs (SAMSUNG Migrate, Acronis True Image anche with and without copy sector, Macrium Reflect).
When I replace the 840 with the new 850 Windows it boots, everything works except that the system does not mount the USB external hard disk drives. The USB scanner and the USB mouse work. Pen drives and external disks in Device Management report the error code 10, the device will not start. In disk management units do not appear. If I update the drivers using Windows Update it is reported that the driver of the disk drives are the most current.
If again I place the disc 840 everything works properly.
I have read other threads on this topic (USB drives not recognized) and made many attempts but have not solved the problem.
The Motherboard is Asus Z97Pro, CPU Intel 4771.
Thank you.

A:Usb drive not working after Samsung SSD 850 cloned

Sure wish someone would come up with a solution rather than all the advertising for programs that DO NOT solve the problem. All they do is cost money.

Have updated the USB drivers - and still no go on the cloned OS SSD. Put back the original - works just great. Doesn't make sense!

Someone please help - for it's most frustrating - as you probably know.

Many thanks.

Hi can anyone help please.
I have a HTPC that I am really happy with except the noise. I purchased a Samsung Evo 840 250gb to replace the chattery hard drive, secure erased using Samsung magician and then cloned using the Samsung migration tool. I set the BIOS to boot from this drive. Everything boots up fine until about 8 seconds in and then the CPU starts to climb and the blue busy circle starts, this then causes the fans to cut in which now makes it noisier than the hard drive!!
I reverted back to the hard drive and it boots up as normal no issues so I can only assume there is an issue with the SSD?
Any help would be massively appreciated.
Kind regards.
Nubee

A:Samsung SSD boot drive causing CPU to Max out.

I have a Samsung EVO 840 500 gb SSD. I replaced a smaller SSD drive on Windows 7. I tried cloning with the Samsung program and with Macrium Reflect and neither booted up properly. I had to use Macrium Reflect and "restore" to the new SSD from a complete drive backup.

I would suggest doing that, backing up the hard drive to some other media and then restoring to the new drive. If you don't have a backup program, there is a free version of Macrium Reflect that you can use.

Just installed Windows 7 Pro 64bit today (big mistake). One issue with this OS is that it can not detect my DVD/CD drive.

It is a Samsung SH-223F/BEBN 22x Speedplus. Placing the CD with the drivers on it does nothing.

The drive opens/closes fine, but Windows 7 refuses to recognize it or run anything that is inserted. It worked 100% fine in Vista. I used this to boot/install Win 7 itself a few hours ago. It shows up in the BIOS.

I can not install essential programs of mine. I need to get this fixed quickly or else I will have to revert back to Vista...

And no, Samsung does not list the drivers on their website. Typical since they are a shit company.

Thanks for your time.

Existing Setup
Abit IN9 32-Max, 2gig OCZ, E6300, WD 250g, Win7 v7264 x32
NO issues, everything runs fine.

Removed WD 250g and switched to Samsung F1 Spinpoint 750g drive (which is essentially my old gamming system running on xp).

Cannot install Win7, regardless of version, locks halfway through install. Hard reset and Drive is no longer detected.

I experienced this same issue back when I had the gaming system and the only way to fix it was to disable Command Qeueing ( which was recommended by users with same issue ). The problem seems to be with the nvidia chipset ( in this case 6) not playing nice with some Samsung drives. However, I was able to install XP and of course disable this option. PC then ran fine for a year, no lockups.

Basically same system, but will not allow Win7 to install. Ive tried different sata ports, different partitions, different win7 versions, different bios settings... Always locks halfway through.

I would appreciate any suggestions, thanks in advance.

If your data on your hdd is more than 120 gb you will not be able to do it. If your data is less than 120 gb you have a chance and hope you have no data past 120 gb on the hdd. you will have to shrink the main partition so it will fit on the ssd.

Does anybody know the parameters for a 7200rpm, 80 GB Samsung HDD? My bios is set up to auto detect a new hard drive, but it sort of freezes and won't do anything, including let me out of the bios. When the computer first starts to boot it lists the new hard drive. If I let the computer continue to boot, the next page has the configuration and instead of having the primary master, primary slave, secondary master, etc. listed, it stops at the primary master and has no info about it.
I had hoped that just in case the bios wouldn't recognize the whole 80 gigs, I would download a drive overlay from samsung, unfortunately they have an endless loop asking me to register. (Please register before downloading, I register, try to download, and it sends me to the register page again.)
If someone could please help me get my new master hard drive installed - I would be forever grateful!!

hi

1) I recently bought a samsung external hard (1500GB). The problem with it was that i couldn't use it on my playstation 3. i was told to format it to Fat32 (something like that), to which i used someone's link which was provided to me. After formatting it, it was still not working on my PS and to make things worse, it was now not detecting on my PC. I use Windows 7. Can someone please help with both aspects of the problem.

thank you

A:Samsung External hard drive

Install free Partition Wizard which will often detect a drive when Windows won't. If so make sure it has a letter, or else rightclick to Add Letter.

If it still doesn't show up in Windows or PS, delete the partition and create a new Primary one in the native (NTFS?) format of the external HD. Assign a letter. Do not mark Active.

If problems persist, rightclick the drive to Check File System and if necessary run Surface Scan.

Hi

apologies if this looks a bit of a dodgy post but I'm struggling to type due to pulling my hair out on an almost daily basis recently. I have a HP Envy laptop running windows 8.1. I have bought a Samsung 3Tb D3 Station external HDD to use as backup. Product blurb (and indeed user guide) confirms suitability for use with Windows XP, VISTA, 7 and 8. I have used the drive with my desktop pc and the Samsung Drive Manager installs perfectly. However when I plug into my laptop the installation starts then an error message appears showing Windows XP, Vista and 7 and that I should check my operating system. The instructions say nothing about having to go searching for additional drivers for Windows 8. Can anyone offer any help with this? After problems with iTunes not running without QuickTime (no solution available), Silverlight running video without any sound and my desktop hard drive collapsing, I'm rapidly reaching that place known as "the end of my tether".

Thanks in advance

A:Samsung D3 Station 3tb external drive

well to answer some of your questions yes itunes does not function without quicktime as it is what apple uses for .mp4 playback and is a crucial part of the program, silverlight imo is just buggy still and not much seems to use it (mine does work but though), what version is yours in your program and features menu? the HDD is made by seagate and not samsung so its confusing but you need the driver that is on this page Samsung D Series External Drives | Seagate also i would jsut not use the software its crap from what i have heard and would just use it for storage and use your own software like acronis or macrium reflect if you are backing up your os.

hello,

for couple of days, breaking my head tring to figure out what im doing wrong, or what else i can do .

i used to have as my C:\ drive a kingstone 120gb SSD drive . due to lack of space, i bought 250GB SSD samsung evo-850 drive.
i execute fresh new windows 10 pro X64 installation on the Samsung but after installation finished with no error, and setup is rebooting the pc, the screen is stuck on the "loading operation system" and nothing is happening.

i thought that the cause for that is because i still have the kingstone drive plugged in, and there is conflict between those, but even when i unplugged the kingstone drive and execute windows installation, same thing is happen.

i tried to change order of booting from the pc setup and again nothing is chagne (samsung drive is shown in the pc setup and also when i load windows from the kingstone drive)
i also tried to version of windows setup iso which are used from Disk on Key "burned" with rufus latest version.

what else can i do ?

thanx.

Hello,

I have just fitted a MZ-7PD512 SSD to my computer. I have run the Magician software and read the documentation that has come with it. You suggest that the defrag is switched off, I have 3 hard drives in my system , 2 normal HDD''''s (D: and E and the boot drive is the SSD (C.

I''''d like to be able to defrag my 2 HDD''''s occasionally and leave defrag switched on with the SDD not selected in the defrag option screen. I have done some research on the internet and I have read in several places that it is ok to leave defrag switched on in Windows 8 as the operating system will detect my SSD and not defrag it and will offer some optimisation with the trim and garbage collection.

Could you please confirm on my system with 3 hard drives, 2 HDD''''s and 1 SSD if I am OK to leave defrag enabled on Windows 8 or do you still recommend it is disabled.

I have been running my new build for around a month now and had no problems whatsoever with Vista 64.
Have tweaked the graphics card with an Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme 8800 and drastically brought the temperature down.
I have just taken receipt of a 1 Tb hard drive and wondered whats the best way forward.
Do I try to copy everything including the OEM version of Vista to the new hard drive or do I just transfer my files and keep the existing 320gb hard drive as the OS boot drive?

Whats everyones experiences about adding a hard drive?

A:Adding a 1Tb Samsung Hard Drive

Keep the OS on the 320gb drive and use the 1T drive for programs and data. If your OS fails and you need to reinstall at least your data will be safe. You may need to reinstall some files though as programs do link in to the registry. Another way of doing it is to use the 1T drive just for data. Pictures and music ect. This way it will be easy to back up when you want.
It also depends on the speed of the drive, if your new drive is alot faster than the old it would make sense to transfere everything to the new drive and sack the old drive or sell it on ebay.

Hello!

I recently bought a samsung portable hard drive from the M3 series with a 1TB storage capacity.

My computer currently runs on Windows 8.1, x64, 4GB RAM and a 3Ghz processor

When trying to install "Samsung drive manager" or any of the other software that came with the hard drive - I receive the following error message "This runs on Windows XP/Vista, Windows 7, please check your OS".

I have tried to install the "Samsung drive manager" from the Seagate website, thinking that it might be compatible but I receive the same error message.
According to the Windows compatibility website and Samsung/Seagate, the M3 hard drive is compatible with Windows 8 (Note, I have Win 8.1, but is there really that much of a difference?) I ran the software bundle on my old laptop (Windows 7) and it worked fine, so that excludes any issues with the actual hardware

My C drive and DVD are on the southbridge (SATA 1 & 2). I have a WD 400GB drive on SATA 3 (SiL chip), as well as 2 IDE drives.

I purchased a Samsung 750GB SATA drive. I formatted through a SATA/USB cable and then installed the drive in the SATA 4 connection. When I rebooted, it got to the Silicon Image Bios Screen (hit control-s or f4 to enter) and showed the WD drive (and size) and then the Samsung drive, but it would not show the samsung drive size. All it showed was an blinking underscore where the drive size should appear. If I tried pressing F4 or Control-S, nothing would happen, system appears frozen. Hello to you all,

This is my first post and I'm far from being a computer expert... so please accept my apologies if this is in the wrong section or if it is such a simply query that a four year old could solve it!

I've recently purchased a Samsung R780 laptop and when it first started to install Windows 7 it asked me to partition my hard-drive. As I was a little unsure about this I did some searches on my phone and found that it was good to have a small ish partition as my 'C' Drive (i.e. where Windows was to be installed) and a bigger partition for my 'D' Drive to store my personal data. As such, I opted to have 86 gig on my 'C' Drive and 490 gig on my 'D' Drive. This is all well and good, however, I've found that when I installed my virus protector it didn't give me the option to select which drive I wanted to install to. I.e. I downloaded ESET NOD 32 and it automatically assigned itself to my 'C' Drive. So, my first question for you Windows experts is, can I set something up so that I'm given the option of which drive to install programs too (I want to install iTunes, but knowing how large their software is I'm afraid I will run out of space on my 'C' Drive - I only have 55 gig left)... I would prefer not to have to use regedit if possible, as I understand this can be a minefield for inexperienced people like myself.

My second question relates to the fact that I tried assigning 'My Music' folder to the 'D' Drive. I did this by changing its location under preferen... Read more

Welcome Stephen to the windows 7 forums.
Most programs do give you the option of where to install them. Some do not but most do. Many times there is a small screen where you can change the drive and directory where they will be installed.

That aside. I have many programs and their data installed on my larger D drive like documents and special directories for my email. My outlook uses a directory on my D to store the .pst file which can get large.

I would recommend creating directories on your data drive that you will then have to go into each program and change the default directory for it's data.

Once you install a program on your C drive, you are kind of out of luck unless you uninstall and then re-install telling it to use the D drive. Many people just take the defaults but many programs require that you allow them to put some data on the C, such as dll's and such.

i think this would qualify as my stupidest moment ever. yup.

i'd done this before. reference this post: http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/322107-cd-dvd-burner-drive-not-working-please-help-_.html

however, reinstalling the program shouldn't have been a problem, as the lowerfilters and upperfilters were deleted. that's what the site said that i found the original information on.

upon reinstallation, and perhaps it was because it'd been too long since i'd deleted them, cakewalk reinstalled both filters and made a backup of the upperfilters.

i.e., i had:
lowerfilters
upperfilters
upperfilterscakewalkcopy

so, upon finding that i no longer could use any burning software, but like before my computer would read discs and still knew it had a cd drive, i went back to said post and did the steps over again.

except this time, it didn't work. o__o

after some struggling with it, i decided to delete the upperfilterscakewalkcopy as well. (i thought i'd done that originally, too.)

i reinstalled sonic (the original burning software that came with my laptop that i never took off) and took of pyro for good. but now, it still won't recognize the burning capabilities of my cdrom drive.

i have attached an image that includes the portion of the registry i'm talking about, for a good visual.

any help would be greatly appreciated, as the computer wouldn't allow me to simply restore it to a time right before my moment of stupidity... Read more

A:Changing xbox dvd drive from samsung to benq

for starters, you might want to get your thread moved to a better forum, since this forum is used for do it yourself projects that are not computer related. If you click on the lower right hand side , on the "report"button, when the next window opens, ask a moderator to move your thread to the hardware forum. Dont start another thread on the same problem in hardware, since posting duplicate threads is against the site rules.

Good luck with your problem, I hope you get an answer soon!

In february I got this hard drive: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Station-Desktop-External-HXDU010EB/dp/B002C46042 (Samsung Story 1TB)

I plugged it into my Mac, made it OS X Extended, and it worked great. It has 500GB on it. All of a sudden it became Read Only, which prevents Time Machine to perform any back-ups. The Mac forum suggested I format it, but that's only for NEW drives first connecting. I've had this for almost a year working fine.

It's no longer showing up as an icon on my desktop or in Finder. Disk Utility shows it, but all the options to repair disk are greyed out.

Please help!

Running benchmarks on my new Alienware 17 and it looks like write speeds for the Samsung PM951 NVMe are very low. CrystalDiskMark shows good read speeds but write is 3X slower than the specs.
Laptop seem to be running latest drivers and bios up to day. The default controller was set to RAID and thats where I left it.
Any ideas? Faulty drive?

A review of the Self Encrypting Drive feature of the Samsung 840 Evo.

Industry leaders, including Samsung, are using deceptive and fraudulent language to sell “hardware based” “self encrypting” SSD's to people who want to protect their data with hardware based encryption. They are making claims that are untrue or misleading in order to peddle hardware to trusting customers.

Self Encrypting SSD's based on TCG-Opal are a big fat lie.
TCG-Opal is a scam.

Encrypts on the fly!
AES 256!
Secure Erase!
Self Encrypting Drive!
Hardware based encryption!
No impact on performance!

That is what I read on many supposedly reputable, hardware review websites about the data encryption capabilities of the Samsung 840 Evo. So I bought one. But it isn't true. Don't believe the hype.

The sites I visted had a bunch of buzz words and techie sounding slogans that mean zippo. All of the tech reviewers who reviewed the drive and stated in one way or another that the user's data on the drive would be safely encrypted using flashy sounding techno-babble should all turn in their self-awarded tech expert badges and stop writing. That includes the writers and editors from 'Tom's Hardware', 'AnandTech', YouTube tech “experts” and many, many others. Shame on you all.

Samsung finally released their firmware update (9 December 2013)for the 840 Evo which makes the drive TCG-Opal compliant. TCG, 'The Trusted Computing Group' developed a standard f... Read more

A:My Review of Samsung 840 EVO SSD Full Drive Encryption.

Cheers for taking the time and effort to actually investigate this. One thing that leaves me confused is when you say..

"If you want to gift a SSD to someone or sell it and you want to be sure your data is erased then the secure erase function in the Magician software applied to the Evo will do what it says it does. Your data will not be retrievable by anyone. I'm pretty sure of that."

My understanding (which may be flawed) is that the way the erasure tool works is the same way the drive works by setting a BIOS/drive password.. which is that when you use the samsung erase tool it wipes the encryption key off the drive, therefor making the data useless. Setting the BIOS password is the sort of the same thing, it encrypts the key with the BIOS / HDD ATA password, and if that password is secure enough then its the same as wiping the encryption key. Otherwise, how can you be so sure that the odds are better of you not being able to recover that encryption key over you being able to decrypt the encrypted key (with a decent password)?

Hi Guys,

Ok here's the issue i have the Samsung SH182M using AVS video Tools 5 along with Nero 7 every now and again with an O/s of XP SP2 pro. The issue that has a risen is that my Samsung Drive will not read blank DVD's of any format and purely reads them as blank cd's. I have tried every available combination which is supported by the drive, so R -/+ RW -/+.

When i put a blank DVD in my autoplay comes up with the blank CD options. SO i check the drive and i get Blank Cd with no space to burn on, and yes they were DVD's. Now i've been through the usual steps of reinstalling/updating drivers/ Firmware. I switched the burner from master to slave with my DVD reader as Master no luck.. So i thought ok its the drive i borrowed another DVD writer of a friend and had the same problem with his drive in my computer. My drive in his computer on the other hand worker a treat. What am i doing wrong, have i missed, what further info do you require. Oh prior to the disk going in on my computer the Drive reads DVD - RAM then with the disk in it reads CD drive. Any help would be great i can't think of anything else.

Thanks

A:Samsung SH182M Drive not reading blank dvd's

Since posting this message i have rebuilt my computer with totally new mother board (ASUS SLI Delux) processor (AMD6000) graphics card, NEW Western Digital HDD, fresh windows install XP SP2 and even a lovely new case and the only remaining feature is the DVD writer. I've subsequently borrowed an external DVD writer which again only reads blank DVD's as blank CD's i have tried several makes of disk Memorex DVD - R, Kodak DVD +RW, Sony DVD + R, Imittaion DVD -R. The disks don't appear to be the issue as they work on other writers but not mine.

Just to recap my Samsung SH182M reads blank DVD's as blank CD's. It does read games pre recoreded DVD's ie Films, it reads dvd burnt on other machines and it reads all sorts of CD's. Wen i insert a a blank DVD of any kind the drive instantly turns from a DVD RAM into a cd drive on My computer. Any help anyone could suggest would be great.

I have a question and I was hoping somebody could help me out regarding this drive.

So far I can only find the black bezel version of this drive with a 2mb buffer. For some reason it appears that the black versions of this drive only come in bulk. I was told that the bulk versions of this drive only come in 2 mb buffer versions rather then the 8 mb buffer version with a beige bezel.

I only found a couple of sites that claimed to have the 8 mb buffer version in black. However, when I called them on it, they turned out not to be the retail version and only had 2 mb buffer.

Another guy in a forum told me that they only sell the black version in bulk. So if I wanted the 8 mb version I would have to settle for beige even though my case is black.

Does anybody out there have the black version (retail) with a 8mb buffer? If so where can I get one?

A:Samsung SM-352B Combo Drive ( SM352B )

2MB Buffer is fine, as those drives have 'Super Link' buffer underrun protection.

Hi, everyone.
I have a 320gb samsung s2 external hard drive. I have this for only a few months.
All the time, it is working the it should be, but today, I can't seem to access this.
Here's the problem. When I plug it in, it doesn't show the SAMSUNG(P but only "local disk(P". It shows that I should format it.
Also, every time I try to right-click the local disk(P, it only ends up to not responding.

I tried changing renaming it, but still nothing. I checked if it is installed properly, and it does.
There is also no ticking sound in the disk inside, and the light is also lit up.
Please help me, there are so many important files inside and I hope it will not end up being formatted.

I have set up a secure area on a Samsung USB Flash Drive using the Samsung software, but when I run the software on a second PC, the second PC crashes. So I would like to abandon the Samsung software, and instead use TrueCrypt. However. . . .

The Samsung software allows you to set up a private, password-protected partition in addition to the public partition, and enables you to switch from one to the other. Only one partition is visible to Windows (including in Computer Management). You are supposed to be able to adjust the partition by choosing the ?Format? option in the Samsung software, but the Samsung software has stopped displaying the option! So I cannot undo the partitioning, and half the drive is inaccessible to Windows.

The Samsung software that I am using variously describes itself as ?USB Disk Pro?, ?Security Utility ver. 2.67.00) and SecurePenDrive.

So, if anyone can answer any of these questions I might be able to move forward:
?
? Why has the ?Format? option disappeared from the Samsung software window / how can I get it back?
? Where can I download a later version of the Samsung software?
? How can I override the Samsung software, and reformat the whole drive as a single partition again?
? Where can I get support for USB Flash Drives within the Samsung empire ( - despite my best efforts, I have been unable to find this?)

Yes, you are correct, but I would check with the OEM (Samsung) and/or the place you bought it.
It could be a "Returned" machine and was not cleaned up right.

I have a Samsung Hard Drive connected to a USB port thru a external
drive case. The physical hard drive is partitioned into two drives. A "H" and
a "G" drive. I would like to make it into one drive. How do I do that. Do I need some kind
of Samsung Drive formatting software to do this or can I do it in XP.
Thank you,

A:Solved: Removing Partitions from a Samsung Drive

You can just use Windows XP Disk Management to do it. How ever if there is data you want to keep on one of the partitions you will lose it. You can also buy and use something like partition magic and resize your partitions without losing data (supposedly) However it is always a good idea to back up data you dont want to lose to another diask or onto Optical discs prior to using such a program as it may not be fool proof. You could also back up the data you may want to keep before using Windows Disk Management. You find this under Administrative Tools, Computer Management on the control panel.

i have just bought a samsung sp2504c 250gb hard drive. ihad a westerndigital wd170aa 17gb hard drive in it but it was faulty so i binned it + put windows xp home edition on it. the problem is: when i go to my computer + look under devices with removable storage it has an icon of a box with a cd + says vrmhoem_en(d when i double click it it gives me some option, 1 of which is to install windows. can anyone tell me what this is + whether i need it or not? another problem i have is when i go to my computer + look under hard drives, it says local disk(c. when i hover over it it says total space:232gb + free space:231. why does it say this as i havent installed or downloaded anything? ive only put windows on it. i havent even installed the drivers from my motherboard cd. my specs are: amd athlon 64 3000+ cpu, asrock k8 upgrade vm800 mobo, 256mb elixir ddr400 pc3200 184 pin ram, 250gb samsung sp2504c hdd, 2x cd/dvd rewriters(1x dual layer). any help is always appreciated...thanks

A:problems with samsung sp2504c hard drive

That is because the removable storage device that you double clicked on is your cd/dvd drive with removable storage disc (your win xp home cd) in so you should not re install it unless you really need to .

so remove it from your drive because it will also slow your startup or your system might even boot straight from your win xp home cd and start setup again.

The drive in my computer says Local disk because it on your computer (local) but if it were some disk on a computer that you accessed via a network it would say Remote disk or remote storage device.

so if you want to change the label on that drive just click on it once to highlight it then click on it again, then just type another name like "Storage, Backup, System" but you cant have a name with more than 16 characters i think.

Your free space is only that much because you have windows installed on it and it is the File system, formatting and partition tables etc..that uses up the rest of the space so that is why your 250gb looks as if you have lost 18gb.

hope that explains everything?

Hi

I have downloaded Hard Disk Sentinel and one of the options in this is to change the acoustic management of the hard drive when I change this to the recommended setting which it says is (FEh) as soon as I apply this change it reverts back to the default setting which is min performance and volume (80h). Does anyone know of any other software that allows me to change it to )FEh) to get the best performance out of the drive?

Hard drive is a Samsung HM500JI

Many Thanks

A:Samsung hard drive acoustic management

Offhand, I'd guess that only Samsung software can do that on a Samsung drive.

I'd also guess you are operating the software incorrectly, but I could be wrong. I haven't looked at that type of software in several years.

You might be able to force things back to a default with a jumper setting?

Samsung drives are known to be very quiet, so I think you are on the right track in leaving it on the high performance setting--the drive will probably be quieter than most even on the "noisiest" setting.

I brought a Samsung 1.5tb drive http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166989which i plugged in through usb to my computer and it showed the correct amount.

I restarted the pc, and then it bugged up showing as an unformatted drive.

I went to format it, and it said it couldn't, so went into admin tools disk management, and it showed as 465GB, and has since. I tried formatting and deleting the partition, but it still shows as 465GB. Rather frustrating!

I tried running HDD Capacity Restore like I had to on my previous Samsung 1TB drive (which worked), but it didn't on this new 1.5tb.
Could it be that my motherboard (gigabyte ds3r) corrupted the firmware, or is a defective drive? I've tried running EStool, but it did nothing...

Cheers

A:Samsung 1.5TB hard drive showing as 465GB

I would more lean towards a bad drive than the motherboard causing a problem. How have you connected this drive via USB? Did you also buy a USB Connected enclosure, or and adapter of some sort?

Hey guys,
So I have a samsung 1.5TB External Hard Drive that all of a sudden tells me it needs to be formatted. All I did prior to this happening was restart my PC, the same way I do every day.

I have 1TB of files, pictures, videos and more on that drive with no backups of it anywhere and I really need everything back.

I have read many threads similar to this one but others don't seem to have exactly the same problem that I do, in that when connected, my EHD constantly appears and then disappears in My Computer with a pop-up message.

This means that no matter which data/partition/HD recovery software I use, it doesn't allow me to select the EHD as it keeps disappearing from the list.

So basically, when it is plugged in, every 10 seconds or so it disappears and then reappears with this pop-up message:

"You need to format the disk in drive G: before you can use it.
Do you want to format it?"

Obviously I don't want to format it as that means I lose all my data.

Also, it uses USB 3.0 and is connected with a USB 3.0 cable into a USB 3.0 port.

I have tried:
- Changing the letter of the drive

In terms of recovery software, I have tried a few and another thing that makes it difficult for me to use (besides my EHD disappearing all the tim) is that I don't really know which options to choose.

For example, iCare Data Recovery has 4 sub-menus:
1. Lost Partition Recovery
2. Advanced file recovery
3. Deep Scan Recovery
4. Format Recovery

Oh, obviously many USB flash drives come with drivers (for win98 and around that area )

Are you talking about the HardDrive Controller that's on your Motherboard?

A:I bought a wiped hard drive for my Samsung.

IMO skip 8 and go to 10 or stay with 7, you will be better off in the long run.  Wasting $ on 8 does not make sense when you can redo you 7 free as long as you have a valid COA sticker or jump to 10 and use the $ a little more wisely.
