HP Presario v3000 motherboard problems

Q: HP Presario v3000 motherboard problems

The problem with the laptop start when the wireless adaptor stops working, then a few days later the computer freezes in a strange looking screen where all the colours are muddled up, then when I am unlucky the laptop will not start again anymore it will just display a blank black screen. I have sent it to repair twice and each time they resoldier the different parts of the motherboard the first time was the "northbridge chipset", the problem is that now it has happened again and I am going to have to send it to repair a third time, each time it works for a while before it stuffs up again. Should I keep sending it to repair or is it just hopeless, or does anyone know what the problem is and why it works for a while before it stuffs up again?

I have a Compaq Presario V3000 (approximately 4 years old) running Windows XP SP3. When I plug in the headphones, I assume the laptop speakers should be muted. This does not happen.

I have conducted some research and discovered that this Presario model was apparently designed to specifically run Windows Vista and running XP interferes with the muting facility.

Would anyone know how this problem may be solved (without resorting to buying Vista)?

Thank you.

first of all, i dont know computer that much.
My problem is, i've downloaded a malicious malware, maybe a virus and my lappy kept on rebooting when the blue screen appears! What i did is i reformat it with the cd that comes with the package (windows vista starter) and the oem pre installation kit. My another problem is there is no cd drivers on the package. So some drivers dont work well. In device manager, there is no network adapters installed and whenever i try to install drivers like intel pro 2200bg wireless, it doesnt install properly! Until now, the only thing i cant use wth my lappy is the internet. How can i make it work again?? Im so sad with this! Help please. :-(

The other day I left my laptop on overnight and died cuz I didnt have the power cord plugged in and it wouldn't come back from standby in the morning even after I gave it power. After plugging it in, I powered it off by holding the on button for about 5 secs. When I turned it back on, I'd get 2 short beeps, LED lights on, and fan spinning, but nothing on the display. I've tried plugging it into an external monitor but nothing showed up. After testing for awhile, I noticed that when I plug my power cord into the laptop from a completly shut off state, the computer automatically starts up and gives me the same symptoms again. That's kinda strange that plugging the laptop to power = turn on instantly. Anyone know what's goign on here?

A:Laptop Help (Compaq Presario V3000)

My hitachi starts up when I plug it in.
I always assumed it was because it doesn't have a battery.
Never did.
You might want to run a full charge cycle on the battery and see if
it is still holding a charge.
then try it.

Hi there,

Im very new to this whole upgrade stuff

a mate (who knows computers) upgraded my Compaq Presario V3000 to windows 7, since i got it back its working a treat how ever i cant seem to get my mic working or the audio through my front earphone jack.

I have tried a few drivers, the HP site does not support drivers for this laptop with windows 7.

its the 64 bit version and yes my pc is also 64bit.

I have been through all the settings in device manager and it looks fine.

There are no little yellow triangles, under sounds video and game controls is
a pic of a speaker and hi definition audio device... so to me looks normal.

I have been through all the settings on my pc, but normally if i click on the speaker on my task bar it opens the volume control with a speaker level, mic level, headphones level etc, now its just levels for the laptop inbuilt speakers and something called sound systems ( no matter what i try and can not get anything out of setting the sound systems tab as the default so no idea what that is)

If any one has any ideas on how to get my headphone jack to waken and produce noise or my mic to open and do its job please let me know.

p.s my mate that installed this software has moved away as of the day after install and is unavailable for further assistance at this time.
Thanks in advance.

Hey dudes, i was wondering if you could help me figure out what's going on here, though i might already have a guess, i'd like to get opinions as well as solving matters.

I'm helping my friend solve a problem with her laptop where her Compaq Presario v3119AU suddenly just stopped detecting the wireless card, even in device manager.

Now, we've tried reformatting, running it in linux or win vista and I've even gone so far as to take out her wireless card to test it in my laptop, and to test mine on hers only to get the same results, that the card isn't detected in her compaq, whereas her Broadcom Wireless works on my ASUS laptop...

I'm suspecting that over time of her using the laptop on the bed or so that the board has somewhat cook off... probably... any input on this? so far the only option i see now is to head it back to compaq...

A:Wireless issue on Compaq Presario v3000 Series

hamsteyr, i'm sorry, this is first symptoms of northbridge dying(nv6150go). the problem is that nv6150go makes some disturbances in pci-ex bus,and thus preventing the wireless card from detection. well, you an try to update your bios, it may help. i had 10 or 20 cases like this in my repairing practice. 5 laptops were cured(completely?) with BIOS reflashing. the others - nv6150go/nf-spp100 replacing.

I've a friend's laptop here that is in dire straights.

It is a Compaq Presario V3000 running Windows XP Home edition. Beyond that I don't really have any information to post because I can't even get the thing to boot in Safe Mode.

A regular boot will anchor this thing in a Windows start up loop. It loads Windows then the blue sceen flashes with an error message and is too quick for me to read what it says .. then it starts back to loading Windows .. insert vicious circle here.

A safe mode boot will get me to the "Windows is starting up" screen, but no further. It sticks there.

Anyone have a suggestion?

A:Compaq Presario V3000 - Win XP Home - can't even boot up in "Safe Mode"

I went in and disabled the "auto restart" function and have nailed down the BSOD error message.

The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.

Maybe this will help pinpoint the problem?

I recently acquired a Compaq Presario 5030 desktop from a friend who acquired a newer Compaq desktop.

I have looked inside the case, but it is too cluttered with hardware. I have checked various sites with no luck.

It has an Intel Pentium II 300 MHZ processor, an Intel 440LX/EX chipset, 1 PCI and 1 ISA and 1 PCI/ISA combo slots, and 2 168-pin RAM slots.

If anyone has any idea what brand/model motherboard is installed in this computer, I would really appreciate it.

Hi -
First - I'm new to the forum - just found it - outstanding resource! I have a few old PCs, and am sure I will be using this frequently!

My problem - I found my Compaq Presario SR 123 ONX mysteriously turned off this morning, and I couldn't get it to restart. Tried all the usual things, including disconnecting everything from the rear and trying different power outlets. While doing this, I noticed that there was a blinking green LED next to the power input. I took the side off, noted the power supply number (ATX-250-12ZD2) and looked up the specs online. I disconnected everything inside the PC from the power supply except the motherboard (thinking it couldn't possibly be that). Plugged power back in and light still blinked. Disconnected the motherboard, plugged in and the green light glowed steadily, not blinking.
From what I read, this indicates that the problem is the motherboard.
My question is - what should I get? The specs for the pc are 3200+ AMD Athlon XP.
How expensive are these, and is there a component on the board I can check easily before I take it out and replace it?

Thanks in advance for your help!

A:Compaq Presario SR 123 ONX - what type of motherboard?

I would try another power supply first, they fail a lot more often then motherboards and the indicator LED isn't always a sure thing.

If you do need to replace the motherboard it needs to be the 100% identical replacement motherboard for a Compaq Presario SR123ONX or the connections and software will not work.

I have a seven year old presario 2511EA laptop. She works but she is slow. Norton 2010 running on it does not help. Is there any to speed her up such software, changing cpu speeds ( currently 2.4Ghz P4) or replacng either memory, cpu or whole motherboard ?

A:Should/can I replace motherboard/memory/CPU Presario 2511EA

Motherboard replacements that fit that case are also slow. You are limited by the maximum of 1 GB of pc2700 memory in two 512 MB modules... and it is the memory that makes the biggest difference... Not the CPU speed.
You cannot find a motherboard that will be faster and still fit all the ports and plugs on the case... There are some mighty decent laptops that will be much faster and run at least 2 GB of memory that would be a better choice... Dell, some Acer, Lenovo, Asus... as well as newer Compaqs or HP's.
Prices will be low for the rest of the summer after high school and college graduations are over... and some sellers will give you a significant discount to reduce inventory. The prices will go back up, but with new models that are faster and run 4 GB of memory or more.
Treat yourself to a Windows 7 machine with the potential to run 4 or 8 G B of memory... a quality build will last you anlother seven years.

Hey guys, been a while since I last posted here.
Alright so recently I got myself a Compaq Presario SR1000 which I stumbled across in my local market after buying some new gear for work, the PC is fully refurbished and was W-XP and now W-7 after a complete format of the hard drive and sticking Windows 7 on.
Also got myself a decent enough graphics card for the PC games I currently own.

Okay now so, eh...The computer itself is very old and the hardware within it before I had installed the new graphics card which is a Radeon HD 6670 is say more than five years old at least, I'm wanting to turn this computer into a new gaming PC and so I'm looking for a new motherboard.

I'm not sure at the moment of what type motherboard it is, but I'm thinking its a MATX (Mid-ATX) board.
I'm wondering though if anyone knows of any other motherboard that would fit the Presario SR1000?

A:Compaq Presario SR1000 motherboard upgrade

If you want to upgrade, along with a new motherboard, you will need new memory, CPU, CPU cooler and power supply at a minimum. Basically you are building a brand new computer. As cases are relatively inexpensive I would also go with a better case that has more cooling as it will be needed for a "gaming" system. Factory PC cases are not usually designed with the cooling needed for a gaming PC. Also consider Compaq Presario computers (and cases) are the "low end" or "inexpensive" line from HP.

A:Jumper setting for Compaq Presario 5340 Motherboard

That machine was sold in 1999. Compaq used mainly Asus and some Lite-On boards. Examine the board and see if there is a manufacturers name on the board. Although the board would be manufacturer proprietary what Compaq did in those days was usually use a standard board, and change the BIOS.

If you can find a manufacturer name and model on the board you may be able to backtrack and find the equivilent retail board that they used before modification.

With all the parts you are looking at changing, you would probably
be better off buying a new computer case and building from
If you change the motherboard and cpu,you won't be able
to use the oem operating system that came with your computer.
Buying a case can keep you from having to deal with the
proprietary connections in the compaq.
You should be able to use the drives from the compaq.
That way you can use whatever motherboard fits your new case.

I recently bought a Compaq Presario V3000 notebook, with Vista installed. It does not have the Windows Vista installer, instead it has a copy of all the files in C drive and some other files. I would not have purchased a notebook with Windows installed, if I knew that I would not get the installation CD along with the package! I would have bought it separately...

This is not a safe way to store the installer files! If my notebook were to be affected by any virus, then all these recovery files would also get infected.

I also noticed that the installation that came with the notebook had some worthless software pre-installed with the computer. How do I remove these programs and files without affecting the functions? Okay, so today I got good news and bad news.

Good News: My dad is giving me his old laptop for free, a HP Compaq Presario F700 running Vista Home Premium.

Bad News: He spilled beer on it and now it's acting up.

Here are the problems:

1. Computer doesn't recognize DVD drive.

2. Cannot run programs or use the start menu.
The start menu opens, but nothing will open off of it and it will eventually become un-clickable. I can open the Run box, but after entering a program nothing happens.

3. I can't do scanning. I can't open things off of the Control Panel anyways. When I do, it stops responding until Windows Explorer restarts itself.

4. I have no internet.

5. I can't do a system restore...
When you're starting up the computer, you can hold the Fn key and go into advanced options, and restore the computer to factory. But it doesn't work.

6. When I open up the Task Manager, almost all of the Processes are stopped.

So, what are my options? I can't really reformat my hard drive because I'd need an OEM load from HP, and the DVD drive doesn't work. Using my dad's Vista CD wouldn't work because it has a Compaq serial key (according to him)

Reformatting the hard drive will not fix it. There maybe permanent damage from the beer shorting out across tracks on the circuit boards. Or, maybe not. The best you can hope for is to try and clean it out. Unplug it fom the mains and remove the battery.

If the beer is on the keyboard try removing the keyboard. Lots of instructions on the web

Then rinse the thing under running water and use a toothbrush to scrub wherever you can reach. Shake it dry and if you have compressed air then blow it out. Get some Denatured Alcohol (DA) from your local hardware store and liberally sploosh it around. Do not use Rubbing Alcohol as it has other stuff in it. DA will mix with any water droplets and dry them up quickly. Shake it dry and blow it out. If no compressed air let it dry for a couple of days. Put it back together and try again.

If still nothing then do the wash process on other parts of the main board. Yopu will probably have to remove the main board to work on it. Take digital pics BEFORE you remove each component so you have a series of pics to put it back together. Don't ask why!

When i put on the system (which runs on vista), the following issues occur:

1 - taskbar refuses to show
2 - cannot access "start" menu
3 - i cannot access the "personcalize" section (when you right click on the desktop and choose "personalize")
4 - when it supposedly goes on "screensaver" mode, the laptop freezes.

There's a fifth problem to mention, but for the time being I cannot remember.

Can anybody put an insight into this, and how to start diagnosing?

Thanks in advance

I have the best luck with computers ever. My brother wanted me to format his oldschool compaq presario 5000 computer so I formatted with the win XP setup disk, when I went to restart to start installing windows after the format it takes me to a blank screen that reads:
"Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) NTLDR: couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)"

I have booted with floppy and fdisk, fdisk /mbr, formatted about a million times using FAT and NTFS file systems, I have deleted all partitions, did everythinig I can think of.

Does anyone have any idea of how I might solve this and install windows? I know the HDD isn't shot because I can put it in my other comp and actually do a full win install, but when I place it back in the compaq, it brings me to the same error screen.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

one more thing, I am kinda a n00b at this sorta stuff so any ideas please give me the *hold my hand* explination and guide me what to do with step by step instructions, thanks again guys!

Recently formatted and installed a fresh copy of XP in a friends computer after a big virus scare. Now the onboard sound isnt working! The speakers pop when it's restarted but no sound comes out when playing files.

i believe it's onboard sound ac97\VIA

any clue what's going on?

A:Presario 700 sound problems XP Pro

Hi gorelord

Is the computer a desktop or a laptop? If it's a laptop -->
The US model "700US" uses the ADI sound chip ("SoundMax") - I recently repaired a compaq presario notebook with a Via chipset [northbridge/southbridge] that used the ADI for the sound, using this Windows XP driver =

If it's a desktop, post it's exact model (there isn't a 700 desktop, it would be a 724, 744, etc.). ... In fact, if it's a laptop model other than the 700US, you can check for a driver specific to that model here --->

Uninstall the current driver before updating.

Remember to have your firewall, antivirus, and antispyware installed and running before connecting to networks or to the Internet. And, since you've done a clean install, if Service Pack 2 wasn't included in the XP CD, you need to update to that, and then download all the Security patches since (about 46 or so, last time I counted -- use Windows Update for this).

Best of luck

I have a compaq presario 900us
about a year ago, the monitor stopped working. You can see a slight output when you turn on the monitor, but that is all.
I started hooking it up to a desktop monitor, and that worked fine for a while, but that too has stopped. If i run it in safe mode, however, the external monitor works, but the laptop monitor itself does not. What type of problem does this sound like, and what steps can i take to fix it?
Thanks in advance for any help

A:compaw presario monitor problems

Depends on what Slight output from the monitor means,
If it means the screen is dark but you can see writing and such on it but very very dim it means the backlight is shot and can be repaired.

If slight means nothing is on the screen save a little light overcast, the lcd is shot and is also replaceable but again not really worth it to fix.

As toward your desktop dilema, go into safe mode
then go
settings ->control panel ->display ->settings
and hit apply and OK, reboot, if something shows up on the monitor after the reboot it means you had the resolution/refresh rate set beyond what the screen is capable.

Good Luck

This laptop was not booting up for a while - and my housemate fixed the power cable himself and told me not to move it around much (pretty ugly fix), But the thing booted right up just fine!

I went to use it today, and when try to boot, I get the following message, which just blinks on for a few seconds and repeats indefinitely:

PXE-MOF: Exiting PXE ROM.
The computer is not hooked up to an ethernet cable.

2 questions:

1. Is there something I can do to get the machine to boot?

2. My reason for using it today was because I wanted to transfer all my files to an iomega eGo portable hard drive since I don't plan on using the Presario anymore, except as a back up (if it works). Is there a way I can do this just to retrieve the data somehow?

Hi all,

I recently began playing games again on my home pc (Compaq Presario 5660au: Windows XP, GeForce 2 (64mb), 256mb Ram, P4 1.9, 250W PSU), but noticed that every few minutes any game (including old games that used to work fine such as Castle Wolfenstien) would lag real slow and the sound would do the same, but not the music. These games were all played single player so its not a network issue. After about 10 seconds it would come good and then do it again a few minutes later, very frustrating. So here's what i did:

1. Upgraded Ram (256-->1024), which didnt help the problem (although notepad now flies on this machine)
2. Upgraded the video card from a Nvidia GeForce 2 (64mb) Compaq consumer to a Gigabyte ATI Radeon 9600 (128mb). And the graphics look so much better in any game, but still the same lagging problem as with the old setup.
These are in no particular order:
3. Tried Updating the Bios (and tried changing all the settings in bios - although compaq bios is extremely limited)
4. Changed every setting for the ATI Card to low
5. Upgraded to the latest drivers (and tried the omega drivers) - whilst uninstalling the previous ones
5. Changed every in game setting to low
6. Disabled / Enabled the sound card
7. Reformatted the HDD
8. Defragmented the HDD
9. Changed the ATI setting from 2x AGP to 4x AGP (supported by this system)
10. Probably some more that i cant remember right now

A:Video Lag problems with a Compaq Presario

I'd have to guess that every few minutes some resource hog application is monopolizing a big slice of your PC.

If you are playing these games offline, then use CTL-ALT-DEL and END all the apps that you can't justify running including Virus, firewall, etc. Disconnect from the net, and play for a while. See if you still get the periodic lagging. If yes, comeback with a list of the processes that you left running. If no, then one of the ones you killed is the culprit.

Experiment with them by removing them one at a time with game play in between to test out the effect of removal until you find the bad-boy.

This computer has an ESS 1869 Audio Drive sound device installed and with the latest drivers. It originally came with Windows 95, but was upgraded to Windows 98SE a couple of years ago.

The problem seems to be with the Volume Control master slider returning to the "down" position when you close it. When the Volume Control is kept open and the master slider is kept in the "up" position, it will play sound very briefly and then fade out until you can just barely hear it.

I have checked all the Volume Control and Multimedia settings, have run the DirectX 9.0 dxdiag.exe tool, and have even even changed speakers, but I cannot resolve the problem.

I would really appreciate some assistance in this matter.

A:Sound Problems With Compaq Presario 5030

you can try uninstalling your sound drivers in device manager, then reboot and have windows install the sound drivers again.

If that doesn't fix the problem, I suspect you have some audio software that is controlling your sound. For instance, I had a customer once that had multiple media players installed such as Real Player, Winamp, MusicMatch. If they are all trying to access your sound files, there could be a conflict. Try uninstalling some and leave your favorite one, this may fix your problem.

If all else fails, do a restore!

About 6-7 months ago I purchased a Compaq Presario F500,and a few weeks ago it started to act up. While in the middle of using it the screen would shut off(go Black). This would happen occasionally, until recently,it went black and wouldn't come back on at all. There was power to everything else.I read on HP's site to try removing the battery, and hold the power button down .This worked, but when I powered up the computer, and used it for about 15 minutes, the screen went black.I heard from a friend, who had a similar problem, that it may be the video card. Could this be true,or an overheating problem. I haven't purchased a cooling pad yet.

A:Compaq Presario F500 Video Problems

Sounds like your on the right track, probably is a heat problem. If you're using the computer and you notice that the fan picks up speed (you can usually hear it do so) it means that it's trying to cool itself down. Do you notice something like this happening before the screen goes dark? I highly doubt the video card itself is faulty but there's always the possibility I suppose. You would most likely see graphical anomalies on screen if that were the case.

Ok, first of all i would like to say hello to all members of TSGF!!
Ok, to start, the system that im having problems with is a Compaq Presario V5000 (whichis stated in the title). I have done all that I can possibly do to help this thing. I have followed other solutions and im still having the same problem. Here is a list of what I have done:

Reseated the Ram
Reseated the processor
Replaced the CMOS battery
Bought new RAM and used all possible combinations in both RAM modules
Removed HDD
Replaced HDD
Formated HDD
Bought new battery and AC Adapter
Reapplied thermal paste to processor

I have done all of the above and the problem still continues to happen. What it does is, I will start the laptop. All the lights will come on, But nothing appears on the screen for about 15 minutes. When the COMPAQ logo finally appears, I go to setup. This is where I will start having problems. I cant really do to much of anything here. The laptop will freeze with a whole bunch of artifacts all over the screen. There is nothing wrong with the HDD, RAM, CPU, LCD, or DVD drive. I dont think its the motherboard. Sometimes it will boot my XP cd and it will begin the installation, then freeze . I really dont know what to do anymore. Please help me, any attempts will be greatly appreciated.

A:Compaq Presario V5000 Boot problems

I have worked on many V5000s. Good solid machines. Try this:

1. Unplug. Remove the main battery and CMOS battery. Wait 15 minutes. Reinstall the CMOS battery.

2. Remove HDD, DVD, one memory module. Unplug the touch pad (small ribbon conn under KB). Connect AC adapter. Boot to DOS with an external USB floppy. Twist the case gently. Press on the MB. Does the machine work normally? Keep it on for 30 minutes.

If YES, add back the touch pad, memory, DVD and HDD one at a time. Repeat the tests. If the machine dies, yiu have probably found the bad module.

If NO, you most likely have a bad MB. It is much cheaper to replace the MB with a good used one from Ebay than mess with the bad MB. There are several part numbers that will work. Just match your model category -Intel FF or DF and AMD FF or DF. ( FF = Full Featured and DF = Defeatured.)

Good luck.

Memtest86 fails after a few passes with the unexpected IRQ error.

Replaced both internal and external OEM memory modules (Hynix 512MB PC2700S DDR 333MHz) with two PNY 1GB PC2700 333MHz modules.

Things are worse now. Getting POST beep codes of 1-4-1-1 and 3 and 2, all having to do with memory.

Questions: 1) What is the significance of "S" in PC2700S? 2) Are the internal and external modules the only memory to worry about, or is there some other motherboard memory that could be causing this? 3) Suggestions?

Whenever I boot up my Presario it does things in this order:

Starts making the fan noise

Displays the red Compaq logo

The Compaq logo gets weirdly distorted

It reboots and does it all over again!
I can't get into the BIOS or any other preferences, and I can't get to the Control Panel either. When I try to put in a recovery cd, it spits it back out and goes nuts again. Sometimes, if I leave it alone for a while (about 45 minutes- 3 hours) it lasts longer when booting and can actually get to Windows XP. Then, after about 10 minutes it reboots and goes nuts all over again. Here are my system specs:

AMD Athlon XP Processor 2000+ operating at 1.67GHz
2x 60GB Ultra DMA Hard Drive
256MB DDR SDRAM Memory
Integrated ProSavageDDR KM266 graphics with 32MB shared video memory

I know that the CMOS battery, the RAM stick, and the hard drive are OK.

What is going on with my Presario???

A:Compaq Presario 6320US Boot Problems

Well even with a dead battery and without a hard drive installed you should be able to POST and go into the BIOS. How do you know that the RAM is good though?

Sounds like it could be an overheating problem. The computer detects a high temperature and shuts down to prevent damage. In a perfect world it should shut off and stay off, but I've seen computers do an endless on/off cycle. In fact, I had a Dell that would endlessly go on and off until I yanked the power plug. You said if you leave the computer off for 1-3 hours then it'll stay on for longer. Well, the longer it's off the cooler it'll get which means the longer it can stay on before overheating.

Have you opened the case and looked inside yet? If it's dusty inside, the first thing you'd wanna do is dust it out good. Make sure all the heatsinks, fans, power supply, and all case air vents are completely clear of dust. The second thing I would check is the CPU heatsink. I'm pretty sure that CPU's heatsink has a metal retaining clip that latches onto (usually) a plastic bracket. The plastic bracket could have snapped, which would mean the heatsink isn't properly mounted anymore. That would cause the CPU to heat up to dangerous levels, which would cause the computer to shut down.

Those are the first two things I would look for and try to rule out. After that, it could be a dying power supply. Or the thermal grease could have dried out, which would mean you'd have to re... Read more

hi guys,

i recently discovered my firewall had been disabled and my computer was running slow. A few months ago, I had a google redirect virus that has not only returned, but has also caused my computer to load the system32 folder when i start my computer.

i also seem to have trouble installing programs like hijackthis, which i had to transfer from another computer.

thanks in advance!

oh and i'm running windows xp with at least service pack 2. i think i installed 3, but can't remember.

A:Computer problems Compaq Presario Laptop

btw, there are a noticable amount of viruses present on my computer that have replaced system files, added programs that cannot be removed from the add/remove programs list, and otherwise cannot be erased/fixed by ant-virus (avg and windows defender) or by conventional methods (trying to scan and replace system files)

this isn't really a shameless "keep me on page 1 instead of 12" bump, but i assumed this information would be more vital in having someone actually look at my HJT log, as my prior complaint hadn't garnered enough reason to justify more than one view.

thanks again

My friend has a Compaq Presario with Windows XP and a pile of programs on it. Mainly all came from the boot disk. Well he purchased Windows XP upgrade and we tried to load it as he didn't want to use the boot disk cause again,,,,of adding all the other garbage that comes with it. Well I got as far as installing XP and got an error, and it says.............Fatal Error,,,,An error has been encountered that prevents setup from continuing. Setup failed to install the product catalogs. This is a fatal error. The setup logs should contain more information. The signature for Win XP Home edition upgrade is invalid. The error code is fffffdee. The system cannot find message text for Oxfffffdee in the message file for sysselap.dll.
So now what do we do? Every time I restart it wants to load win XP and can't even get to the desktop. This win XP works as I used it in another of his. Really need some help all.

Hi folks.

Great forum, full of detailed info so I hope someone can help.

I have a Compaq Presario 5650LA (it's very old) and I am trying to install Western Digital 160 GB Caviar hard drive, model - WD1600AABB. The hard drive can be seen in the bios but no matter what jumper selection I use the machine just posts (You can see the Compaq softpaq bios screen and enter it if desired) then sits with a blinking cursor in the top left of the screen.

I have swapped jumpers, ide cables, tried both channels, disconnected the CD and floppy drive, removed all extraneous cards, swapped the mem modules about, removed and reseated the BIOS battery (it was OK) and updated the BIOS to the latest version but it won't boot. I have also used another (so that's two new drives used) identical drive but it did not help. I have tried seagate, WD, etc: hard drives with no difference and all the drives are fine on another machine.

Here's the crux: When I flashed the BIOS it would not boot from it's own floppy drive, so I swapped it out but had the same problem. But, when I tried an external USB drive it booted OK and I was able to flash the BIOS. So I have a machine that will not boot from floppy or HD but will boot from CD, Hirem's boot CD, etc. Even when I tried a HD on the CD ide channel I got nothing.

If you boot with an XP cd it will find the drive and begin to install until the first reboot when the HD fails to boot again. The hard drive can also be found and t... Read more

A little history of the laptop: I bought the laptop used from a friends and All the keys work except "O", "L" and the period. I bought a brand new replacement keyboard and those buttons worked fine, for awhile. I finally bought a new Wwindows Vista cd and installed it on the laptop, since it was supposed to have Vista and it had XP for whatever reason. Still nothing, when I unplug the keyboard ribbon and plug it back in, the keys work for a while and then stop. Any answers are greatly appreciated.

I have this laptop here that is, to put it mildly, SLUGGISH. General windows performance is very noticable. Meaning, you click on something for it to open up, and it could be upwards of 10 seconds or more before there is any kind of sign that your program will finally be ready to open.
Then there is internet. Internet explorer is unusable. It will display things on pages, but if you have an intention, of maybe clicking a link or maybe scrolling down, the delay in it actually doing it is well over 10 seconds usually.
It has Firefox and Chrome installed. These are working, with some lag. Normal surfing is ok for speed, even videos will play without painful lag or choppiness. But for instance, on Facebook, if a game like Candy Crush or really any of the browser based games, tires to load, it has the forever load... then poof all at once it is loaded lag going on. Then once in the game, there is severe graphic degradation and  unplayable lag with clicks and drags for actual gameplay.
I have had this machine before and cleared it out of any and all infections that it had. I ran the same programs I did last time, downloaded from this site. Malwarebytes first scan did find traces of Conduit (that was all that it found), but got rid of it. Then, there again I ran all programs, including Hit Man and everything seems to come clean now, including 2 subsequent runs of MWB.
I am at a complete loss as to what can be degrading the overall performance of t... Read more

Well, you are running win 7 in the completely minimal specs, that might be one of the reasons, either way i'm sure my fellow forum members will help you reduce the load in your system somehow. I'd usually recommend an upgrade, but i don't think it's possible in your case, altough switching to Windows XP should improve your experience alot, it might just not be a good idea since it'd require wiping out win 7 and most laptops forbid that. Either way, would you mind taking a screenshot of the processes running in your computer? Listed in order of most memore used.

I recently bought a Compaq Presario 2100 laptop and I bought a 512 MB of RAM. The RAM I bought was PNY DDR333 Optima Memory and I checked with the manufacturer and it is completely compatible with my laptop. I tried to install the memory and when I went to boot up my computer a screen popped up saying that Windows failed to load. Is there a certain spot I need to put the new memory in because there are two slots. The original RAM is 256 MB. If anyone can help that would be awesome!!!

Just kidding, but I know the keyboard works, checked in DOS on startup. its fine. had Vista previously, but got peed off with it and decided to install W7, but in frenzy, i have formatted and installed W7, and for some strange reason, I cannot find the damn keyboard driver, checked HP site. no luck!.

Hi all. I'm new here but not what you would call new to computers. I have a Compaq Presarion laptop sitting behind me that is giving me fits! A friend of mine got it as a gift. Its got a 1.5 ghz celeron processor, 256 mb of ram, and a 40 gig hard drive.

Here's the problem. When he got it, windows was corrupted and wouldn't boot to windows without a ton of error messages. He told me to wipe the drive clean and re-install XP. He handed me a fresh, recently purchased version of Win XP home and told me to do away with HP's proprietary version of XP. I figured, easy enough. I've done this kind of thing many times with many older computers.

Well, here's the problem. It won't let me do a full format from the XP CD during the first few pages of setup. I can do a quick format of the drive and continue on. However, during setup, I get errors. I've formatted and reinstalled the OS several different times, not always getting the same error message. I completed the install once (with errors) and when I got to the desktop, there was no start button or system clock .... or even the usual recycle bin icon. Nothing was there .... I could ctrl+alt+delete to reboot, but that was the only way to shut the system down.

What is different about these compaq presario notebooks. How can you do a low level format .... or a full format for that matter. How can you get it to take a regular microsoft version of windows XP? I've already wasted countless hours fighting with this laptop.

Bump ... there appears to be no pattern to the errors I'm experiencing. Can anyone help?

I am new to forum. Spent some time the last couple of days trying to get my daughter's Compaq Presario 6330us working. Machine came with two CD/DVD drives, a floppy drive, and a Maxtor 60GB hard drive.

She was not able to boot XP from her hard drive. Her boyfriend had previously tried to recover from recovery CDs, but with no luck. I tried installing a new hard drive (Seagate 160GB) with new one as primary master and old one as primary slave. That didn't work. Didn't recognize either drive. Then took out old drive and used new drive only. Was then able to recover the system. Worked fine for a few hours.

Tried using it later the same day. It had gone to sleep after I thought I had it fixed and reinstalled a lot of her software. When Itried to wake it up, the system froze. Upon reboot, system was no longer recognizing the new drive. It wouldn't let me do another recovery since it can't find a hard drive to recover to. Just keep getting Boot Failure message. Tried new IDE cabling but didn't help. The BIOS is just not detecting the hard drive. Recognizes the 2 CD/DVD drives and floppy drive fine.

I suspect the IDE controller for the hard drive(s) is bad. Can I just install a new card with a new controller rather than repalcing motherboard? Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

A:Compaq Presario 6330 Hard Drive Problems

Anything you do with a Presario 6330 is likely to be trouble and disappointment.
I would replace the EIDE cables, then download all the patches, BIOS, and other drivers and downloads from the site for Presario 6330US. Obtain a copy of WXP Service Pack 2 from Microsoft just in case you can use it ($3.95 from Microsoft).
Give it your best shot with the BIOS and Patch... if it still doesn't detect the drive, consider this an opportunity to get something decent. If it does detect, reformat and reinstall everything, then the entire download set, then run the Windows Service Pack 2 disc. You should then be ok.
This computer has been almost as much trouble as the eMachines desktops, and the failures are too often not fixable.
If money is a problem, take a look at and others that have ruggedized used Dells and IBMs... better than a cheap new one... although you will have to find Windows somewhere.

A:Compaq Presario 1250 notebook screen problems

Sounds like the flexible connector between the screen and motherboard has given up, probably with use?

It would need disassembly and replacement of the flexible mylar circuit. Could possibly just be a connection issue at one end or the other, which still requires disassembly.

Working on a laptop is akin to microsurgery, it is very easy to do damage if untrained.

One of my Compaq Presarios is doing strange things. When I plug it in, it automatically turns on. When it reaches the Compaq logo, it just stays there and nothing happens. One thing I notice is that the CPU light doesn't blink at all.

Does anybody have an idea of what is going on?

EDIT: The most recent time I plugged it in the fan started making this horrible noise (sort of like a high-pitched motor running at top speed combined with screaming).

Repairing a COMPAQ Presario running Vista Basic.
My problems are that the OS wont boot fully, it stops and then freezes.

Then on restart BIOS will run through and give me a choice to repair or boot normally in which I select repair which then runs through until it gets to

!! 0xc0190036 !! 3005/67034 (icardagt.exe)

Here it stops and blinks the text infinitely.

I would provide an HJT log but I can't even get in to do that.
Considering that I can get the BIOS to go through I'm assuming software but if anyone has any ideas that it may be hardware please share. The only hardware that I believe would be a problem at the moment would be the HDD, however it ran efficiently when I was extracting data from it.

Any help regarding this would be appreciated

Hello Tech Support Guy forums! I'm wondering if you can help me with a problem.

My girlfriend has a Compaq Presario CQ56 laptop, but the screen broke and she replaced it with a CQ57, which I guess is the next most advanced model in the line. However, the skype connection would drop after just a few minutes and then drop repeatedly afterward every couple seconds. Usually, all connected services (like AIM) would drop off too.

So here's the weird thing - she returned it and got a replacement, and the replacement is doing the same thing. The CQ56, on the same network, can keep a skype call going for hours. But the 57 drops off fast, and we've tried two different units. I thought that maybe it could be a defective laptop the first time, but twice?

Anyway, does anyone have some troubleshooting suggestions?

would you post the following when its working and then repeat all the tests when it disconnects

is this connected by wifi if so also add the xirrus tests

ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste

Well, today when I came home, my wife told me the computer (computer A) kept crashing today, and now it says there is no keyboard present and it won't boot up. I confirmed this.. it said keyboard error or no keyboard present. It was a USB keyboard. I tested that keyboard with this, our other computer, and it worked with this computer. I tried all 5 USB ports on Computer A, with no luck. The lights on the keyboard would not come on.

I went out and bought a keyboard with a PS/2 plug. The lights on this keyboard do light up. Now, the computer comes to the screen where it asks me to choose between Safe Mode and starting Windows normally, but it won't let me choose, or even press Enter. If I wait until it defaults to "Start Windows normally," it attempts to boot Windows but I get a blue screen saying that the BIOS is not fully ACPI compliant.

It gives me this STOP: 0x000000A5 (0x00000011, 0x00000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I put in the Windows XP Professional recovery disk and rebooted, and now it gives me the option "Press any key to boot from CD" but again, the keyboard does not seem to work.

The motherboard is an ASUS P5N-E SLI. I'm going to call the company that built the computer tomorrow and talk to their tech support. But I hate waiting, so I was hoping someone here might be able to at least tell me what is wrong with my computer.
