I?ve installed a HP mv2120 Media Vault on my computer that?s running 6801. For the most part it seems to be working however:

?The Network LED on the server flickers some. I think it is supposed to remain a solid blue
?I am unable to turn on Network Discovery (running Kaspersky KIS 2009). Windows tells me it?s automatically activated for Private Networks, but the radio button is set to Turn Off Network Discovery
?I get a lot of communication errors from NTI Shadow: ?Communication to the HP Media Vault has been lost. Your file/folder changes will not be backed up. Check the connections, make sure the HP Media Vault is on, and restart the backup job?. However, I can see and access the server from Explorer.
I think something is interfering with my ability to set the Turn On Network Discovery button. The User Manual specifically tells me to turn that on.

Thoughts?

I am running Win 7 Build 7100. Until yesterday I was able to access my HP MediaVault mv2020 using my logon ID/Password.

Now, when I try to access/map the drive, I am told I don't have permission. If I go into the Map Drive dialogue box, I can logon using "Different Credentials" with my same ID/Logon.

I can access the mv2020 using Vista 64 normally, and if I go to my router, I can also access it with the same ID/Password.

I have tried going backwards to a Restore Point several days ago without joy.

Can someone direct me to the registry entries I can examine to see if I have corrupted something.

Thank you

A:HP Media Vault changed behavior

I have been having the same problem. I have tried changing firewall settings. I changed routers. I changed network settings and user settings on the vault.
Has anyone found a solution for this?

I just got the HP Media Vault 2120 and installed an additional 1TB HD on top of the 500gigs it comes with. I am aware of the fact that it does not come with FTP built in it. My only concern is that I want to map a network drive from my job and have one touch access to my files... I hope I am explaining this correctly.... if not I am sorry. But from what I was told is I need to have FTP on the NAS in order to accomplish this. So the obvious question is: 1. Can I somehow make the Media Vault ftp capable? or can I somehow map drives from the NAS without using ftp?

I have been using Media Vault for a few years and until 3 days ago had no problem accessing folders on the server using Windows Explorer. Then 3 days ago, when I tried to open the server (NAS2), it was opened by Windows Media  Player instead of explorer.  I tried to correct that, but now Windows Explorer does not not even recognize it. I can open the server using its IP address and see my folders, but that's it.  Any ideas on how to fix this?

Hi, I've got a HP Media Vault mv2010 and it connected to a Belkin N1 Wireless Router via Ethernet. I can't seem to access the Media Vault through Wireless. Although I can the Web Based Configuration.
the IP for my NAS is 192.168.2.5. I type in \\192.168.2.5\. I get "\\192.168.2.5\ The Network Adress was not found"

I've Tried pinging it with cmd. and i get a response =D. but not being able to access the folders really bug me.

I Tried it with all the default settings in The Web-Based config. but it didnt work. so thats when i manually configured it an IP address. i also changed the domain name from MSHOME to MOWGLI, and its now in a user based setup. I can access the Files from the PC the wireless router is connected to, but the speed is really slow (only 100Mbps compared to 270Mbps)

All Help Is Greatly appreciated

Hi guys,

I wanted to move some files to my laptop to save PC disk space (i have 80GB)
I connected my PC with laptop over LAN. There was no problems connecting it, but when i go to "Run" and type \\192.168.0.2\FolderShare, small window pops up with User and Password fields. I don't know what password should i enter. I've done this before, and i've never been asked for password. Anyone knows this?

A:LAN Password required

Use a userid/password that's already defined on the 192.168.0.2 machine and has access rights to the folder/files you want

/* edit */
Oh.. you also might be forced to create a non-blank password for the userid if it's currently blank. There's actually a method to turn off the non-blank password requirement but for your own network security, its best to use non blank passwords

You say the problem is with visiting web sites but you never say if you are using a web browser or some type of FTP program.

If you are using a web browser, you never say which one you are using.

You mention Mozilla, which suggests you may be using the Firefox web browser but you never say what the version number is.

If you are using a fairly current version of Firefox, it does have the option of letting the user add a master password to protect the saved user names and passwords for web sites. You have to enter the master password before being able to access the protected list.

Hi,
I am trying to help my wife, Sue, get her new ASUS laptop with Windows Eight onto our local network.
Everything went fairly well - she can get to the Internet and can use the network printer. We see storage devices on the local network but she can not open the public folder on a network connected external drive. She is asked for a ID and password. We have no idea what this should be. Her old vista laptop and my vista desktop do not ask for an id or password to get to the public folder. We have password protection off in the network and sharing center. She would like access without supplying a id or password. If this can't be done how does she find or assign the id and password?
Thanks

Try entering a username and password for an account on the PC you're trying to access. There should be a box to check for "remember this password" or something similar. It the username and password work, checking that box will stop you from having to enter it every time.

Just recently, when starting up my PC, I have a new start up screen that requests my outlook password before I can proceed.

Lokking into settings, I found that I had a microsoft account which allowed my to purchase stuf for xbox etc. Not needing the account, I deleted my PC from the account but I still havet o give my outlook password before my pc can be opened. This is a new event so presumably I can undo without a restore. Does anyone have any ideas please

I just got myself into this fix on my recent 'old' XP Pro PC. I have another thread running regarding my "silent" computer which Etaf is kindly helping with but for now everything is at a stop, because in the meantime I thought I would use System Restore to go back about a month before I obtained the computer in case the sounds could be enabled that way; the restore went OK but now, on starting, it is asking me to enter a password, which is not the same as the one which was in use when I obtained it (and had since disabled). I had hoped to use Safe mode to get into Restore in order to undo my restore but even in safe mode I am asked for this unknown password.

So now I am completely locked out unless anyone has an answer.

I re-started my Acer/Asus Aspire E15 laptop earlier after putting free basic Panda ani-virus software onto it. After a quick scan, it shut-down.
When I re-started it, it seemed to be normal, but then a black screen appeared with a box in the middle, titled "Stat-up Password", followed by: "This computer is configured to require a password in order to start up. Please enter the Start-up Password below."
There is then a box for a password to be input, then an "OK" button and a "Restart" button.
Previously, at start-up, I had an account password, but it was with a picture of me and I knew the password.
I fear that my laptop (and who knows what else) has been got-at.
I do not want to guess at passwords that I HAVE used before in other places in case they are being captured for misuse.
How can I get my laptop back to normal?
Please help!

Hi All.

Ever since I changed my online Microsoft password, I've been getting an error when booting my desktop with Win 8.1 saying (upon boot up) that the password is incorrect. I have to manually type it in now.

When I turn on the computer, I previously had not needed to enter a password at all (control userpasswords2 shut it off). When I check my password under the User Accounts section, manually typing my password gets me in fine and when I go to the change password section, it won't let me change the current password to itself, so I know that it's stored my new password in that section.

I don't want to type in a password at all when I boot up.

It's as if my desktop has the old password stored somewhere and is trying to use that, but I can't figure out where that would be or why it's even checking for a password in the first place.

How do I either shut off password checking entirely (userpasswords2 is still set to not require a password, so I don't know why it's still checking) or change whatever password is still being used?

thanks in advance,

Frank

I have 2 PC (desktop and notebook) running Windows 7 Pro
One of the drives of my desktop is shared
I recently reinstalled my notebook (w<hich was previously running 7 pro as an upgrade of Visata Pro)
Since this reinstallation, each time I want to access the shared drive from my notebook, I'm obliged to enter the account and password, even if I validate the "remember" option

Does anybody have an idea of how I can fix that?

A:Password required at each connection

To access the drive without restrictions you should be able to get around the password problem by going into the Security tab and allowing for permissions there, adding Everyone to the permissions list and adding checkmarks to the desired share level should work. Although from a security stand point you would be better off sharing the entire User folder instead.

It also can help to turn off password protected sharing in the Advanced Sharing settings both Public and Work-Home.

Ok, I searched but didn't know how to word it properly, so here is my post. Basically, I want to disable the log on when you come back from a hybernation mode. In otherwords, if you walk away from your laptop for a while, and the computer went to sleep, you wake it by shakeing the mouse or hitting space bar, something. Well, after I do this it comes to a screen with the user name and I have to click it to get on. I just want it to wake up to my desktop.

Normally if you go to Start>>>control panel>>>Power Options>>>Change plan settings>>>Change advanced power settings>>>Require password on wakeup>>>here is wher you can change the option to NO or Yes, well, I want it No and I can't, it is ghosted out and stuck on yes...

Ohh, this is for an HP laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate Student 32 bit

Any ideas?

Thanks!

In our office, we have 12 computers 'networked' with each other. Straightly, I cannot connect to one PC which is my boss' PC BUT he can connect to mine. I need to 'share'/submit my report documents from my PC to his using network sharing & vice-versa.

My PC is running windows 98. (Quite new old PC)
My boss' is windows 2000 Server.

I've installed File & Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks service on my pc.
I changed the workgroup name using our network workgroup name. Restarted & open Network Neighbourhood. Ok, I can see other computers.

But the main problem occured after I was trying to connect to my boss' PC (from the Network Neighbourhood). After I double-clicked, a box came out asking me for password. Here's the details:

Title: Enter Network Password
Text: you must supply a password to make this connection.
Resource: \\...\IPC$

I've tried adding a user from my boss' pc (by right-clicking My Computer > Manage > Local Users and Groups. Right-click 'Users' folder & click 'add user'). I key in my Username.
Then, in his shared folder (from his pc), I set the sharing permission already (by adding my username).

But I still cannot connect to his PC BUT he can connect to mine.

I even set his administrator password & of course this doesn't help at all.

What is this IPC$ for? remote connection?? I don't think so..

Can help?

Hi weeswally

Well, since your system has had a few things coming and going lately, let's start with the WMP 11's FAQs for this sort of thing:
_______

"Q. Why doesn't the Player recognize my CD-R or CD-RW drive?
A. The drive is either not supported or not installed correctly.

"If the Player is running on Windows XP, search for your drive on Windows Marketplace Tested Products List ( http://testedproducts.windowsmarketplace.com/ ). If your drive isn't listed, it might not be designed for use with Windows XP and might not work correctly. To verify that your CD drive is recognized and set up to burn, do the following:

1. Open My Computer.
2. In the Devices with Removable Storage area, right-click the drive, and then click Properties. If your CD drive is recognized, you will see a Recording tab.
3. Select the Enable CD recording on this drive check box."
_______

Those words are direct from Microsoft.
_______

Another thing to check is that the background Windows XP service that CD recording relies on is setup properly. Right-click My Computer, select "Manage", and under "Services and Applications", select "Services" --- and make sure that the "IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service" is set to "Manual" (this will allow it to start when needed). If you want to check in on any other services, here's a guide to XP Services --- http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm

Hi, I have my Windows 8.1 PC's password policy set so that a password is not required when waking from sleep/shutdown. I used to be able to wake the PC from sleep and not put in a password, and I could turn the PC on after a shutdown without having to put in a password either. Since last week, though, when I turn my PC on, it will boot to the Windows loading screen and after loading for a bit, it will jump into the login screen and immediately report a login error that the username or password is incorrect. This happens before I even get a chance to type a username or password. The fact that I have to type in the username and password is strange because I have the PC set to bypass that option.

Can anyone tell me what's happening with this login error issue and how to fix it?

Thanks

This usually happens when your password had not been entered correctly in netplwiz, or you had changed your password and didn't update it in netplwiz.

Hello Mary,

You might see if you may be able to enable the built-in Administrator account either in Safe Mode or at boot. Afterwards, you should be able to sign in to that account, and change your user account type back to Administrator.

If there's any other password protected administrator account on the computer, it's not going to let you do this though.

When I upgraded to Win10 from Win 8.1 this value changed to [Required], which is a pain because I like to just hit the spacebar and have the machine ready without the extra fuss (many times a day.)

No one untrusted has physical access to the machine, but it wakes up at 4am and does updates and maintenance and such, and is connected to the Internet 24/7, so my question is: does having [Password protection on wakeup] set to 'Required' significantly help protect it from attackers over the Internet when it is asleep?

I imagine that attacks of that nature, hard as they may be at this point, by definition of complexity have access at a level such that this setting is irrelevant. Or not?

It almost goes without saying that I'd prefer an answer from someone particularly knowledgeable on this exact setting, and not just the, ?Well, it sure can't hurt? answer that is obvious. (I apologize if that is too blunt. )

A:[Password protection on wakeup] | Is set to 'Required' .. more better?

User Lucas Kauffman solved this over at security.stackexchange.com

It doesn't protect you from attacks over the internet (that's also not its intended purpose), unless you are using a VNC type of remote desktop solution. Ctrl-alt-del is more a protection from opportunists passing by your computer (physically).

Remote connectivity options like RDP always require valid credentials before a connection is established, even if the computer is unlocked on your side.

Since i have it all back up and running i have discovered that the pc now requests a password after the intial startup of windows before it lets me in. There are 3 accounts on the pc i have set up and mine uses a password. I have never had to use the password like this before on start up which means that anyone else using my pc has to ask me to sign in for them and i dont want this. I set the accounts up with mine password protected so that it was easy. How did this happen? also when playing games my ping is usually around 48 for local servers and 108 for usa servers. A:Local Account - Password Required

Hello and welcome!

If you left the password field empty then you simply need to hit enter instead of typing anything in the password box.

I am assuming you converted your Microsoft account to a local one by clicking on "Sign in with a local account instead" in Settings -> Accounts. If you did it in some other way perhaps you can explain.

Do you see any other user accounts showing up bottom left when you try to login?

on my notebook system, running Win2000 Pro, a setting that controls requiring a 'windows 2000 startup password' apparently somehow got set wrong.

The system has always been set to 'Auto Login' with Administrator username and password, since I'm the only user of this system, and this is working fine.
However, just BEFORE doing the Auto Login, the system has started coming up now with a dialog box that says "Windows 2000 startup password", and says my system has been configured to require one.

This dialog never used to come up, perhaps I inadvertently changed a setting. I can get past it by pressing enter because I had never SET a system password in the first place. After this dialog closes (i.e. startup password accepted), the normal auto-login process of Administrator occurs as it should.

I would like to know how to stop this 'Windows 2000 startup password required' dialog box from coming up... I can't find information on it anywhere in the system or on the internet. I would like to configure it to either automatically enter, or to not require a startup password in the first place. does ANYONE know where on the system this is controlled? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Please keep in mind that this password seems to have nothing to do with the normal USER password when loggin in. Control Panel / Users and Passwords / Users must enter a password box is UNCHECKED, and this works as it should, logging in the user autom... Read more

Hello Gang,
Wonder if someone can offer some useful suggestions to assist me. My girlfriend's daughter has a Pakard Bell KAV60 netbook running Windows 7 Starter Edition. There are 4 IDs on the machine, 3 of which have passwords for users that no longer have access to the machine and need to be removed. One of those 3 is an administrator account. The 4th ID (no password) is a Standard User Account. I've been charged with the task of cleaning up the machine and removing the IDs no longer required.

Having access to the non-administrator account, I'm unable to install software to clean it up and perform all the necessary updates to bring it up to date.
Having successfully used HIRENS CD in the past to access older machines in a similar position, I thought I'd give it a try on this machine, but this is the first time I'm having to install HIRENS CD onto a USB Stick and boot from that instead of the CD drive. Here are the steps I followed:

Downloaded the HIRENS CD Zip file on a separate machine
Installed the ISO image to the freshly formatted 2GB SanDisk (Cruzer Micro) USB stick, using unetbootin-windows-608
Changed Boot Order on the Packard Bell KAV60 to "USB" in the BIOS, saved the change
Rebooted with USB connected

The result.... The machine hung, displaying the following message:

"Syslinux 4.03 2010-10-22 EDD Copyright © 1994-2010 H. Peter Anvin et al"

Hi,
I have a two computer network set-up consisting of one WinXP Home and one WinXP Pro, both on SP2. Recently, SyncToy stopped working on the XP Home machine - it said that the target server was not available. The shares could be seen in 'My Network Places'. Clicking on one of these shares prompted me for a password for a username of 'Guest'. I took a guess at this based on passwords I commonly use and eventually found it. SynToy started to workagain. I have to do this now for each session.

What has changed and how can I put it back as it was, with no password?

Thanks for your time,
John.

Is there a way to require a password whenever the UAC Box appears?

I'm wondering... Is there a way to force UAC to require a password anytime it pops up? I've been trying to increase security by using a non admin account, but that presents a problem. First of all, I can't use some programs due to inaccesible files. Not to mention I have to log into an admin account anytime that I want to do anything security related. I don't like to use the admin account because after the initial password, there is very little internal security other than a UAC box and even those are just Yes/No.

What I want seems to be a mix of the two, similar to the way user accounts work on OS X. Whenever I attempt to access something secure (ie. something that UAC would notify on) Windows should ask me for the administrative password. This way even if I'm on an admin account, I'd still need the password to access the feature, instead of just getting a worthless pop up that asks me whether I'd like to proceed.

Apparently in some installations, a standard user would be prompted by a password when trying to access something security related. On my computer, I just get an error and/or a dialog that says to log into an administrative account.

This is the type of prompt I want:

I have a brandnew (2 days up) HP Pavilion running Windows 7 Professional. I also have a home network with a LaCie d2 Network 1TB drive which we use for backup. We got this drive just recently in exchange for a dead LaCie BigDisk, and it works a little differently. The original drive required a userid and password to access a share; this drive defaults to "public read/write" on new shares, so that's how I set them up. I used the shares with the backup of my old computer to move my data to the new computer; worked like a champ.

Today my husband (who also got a new Win7 computer) asked me to create new shares on the LaCie drive, so he could back up the new computer while keeping the old backup. He also complained about the public Read/Write, so I created the new shares with that unchecked.

I haven't been able to connect to anything on the LaCie drive since then, even though I reenabled "public read/write" on all shares. I can't connect to the shares I used yesterday to transfer my files. I can't even bring the drive up in the Network window, although I can see it. Any click on it brings up a Windows security window asking me for a userid and password on the "MyComputer" domain. We don't HAVE a domain, we use a workgroup. It seems to be expecting a login to a userid on my desktop. My login on the LaCie drive is different from my Win7 user account and uses a different password; the Windows security window doesn't r... Hey folks,

So many devices these days come with a driver on a mini-CD. My laptops (Acer and Toshiba) take forever to access them, then think they're blank and ask to format them.

In Googling this I found a guy who said he fixed this problem by reinstalling Roxio. Said his computer came with it but he'd uninstalled it cause he never used it. That it must "turn on" a feature in W7 or something, cause after he reinstalled it, his computer could read mini's.

When I got both my laptops I wiped all partitions (including the hidden "recovery" one), re-partitioned the way I wanted, and reloaded all drivers and W7 (64 Ultimate). The DVD players in both laptops have a central spindle, so they are designed to read mini-CDs. They DO detect them, but again, think they are blank.

Anyone heard of Roxio or other software being required to read mini's? Thanks much.

PS I have a lot of media software installed but not Roxio. (Nero, ImageBurn, Handbrake, Ashampoo, etc.)

A:Is Media Software Required to Read Mini-CDs?

Windows should be able to read your mini-CDs . You might want to eject the CD and place it in the middle . It will take a few seconds to read the disc due to it size. I never had an issue with mini-CDs being read.

I have been using windows 7 as my sole operating system since build 7087 and have never had sharing issues. I have it setup so that my desktop is a file server for my laptop. I setup sharing using the advanced panel under drive properties, I also set the security through there. Everything is set on "Everyone: Full Control". Up until today it worked just fine. I uninstalled and reinstalled my wireless drivers on the desktop (which resolved my internet issues) and now I get a box "Enter Network Password". I don't even have a password on either of the computers.

I reset all the settings, changing them to something else then changing them back, but nothing works. I can't see how nothing works with all of the same settings.

I feel that the network setup for both vista and 7 is stupidly difficult. Its like they don't really want you to share an entire drive, so they make you jump through hoops to do so. Sharing should be simple, right click, share, say who can share, done. What's so hard about that?

oh, i also tried to just share a folder (which has always been much easier, and this doesn't work either)
Anyway, anyone have an idea on this one?

A:Network sharing stopped working? password required?

In Network & Sharing center, click 'Advanced sharing settings' and select 'Turn off password protected sharing' this will stop the annoying message. It's default value is ON.

Hello Technical Experts!

I apologize for my lack of technical expertise, so I hope you'll bear with my very simplistic overview of my file-sharing problem.

I have a local area network (LAN) with three computers, two with a Vista operating system and one with XP:

Vista 1
Vista 2
XP

Sharing files is no problem between Vista 1 and Vista 2. Everything is working perfectly.

It's also no problem for the XP computer to access the files of the Vistas. The problem is the reverse: the Vistas can't access the XP - I keep getting asked for a username and password that was never created in the first place. (When I'm in one of the Vistas, I can see that the XP is part of my network, but I can't open it.)

I read somewhere that the 'guest' user on XP had to be set up for network access and I did that, but no luck.

Would you have any suggestions?

If you need more information, I will be glad to provide it.

Thanks so much!

Marjatta

Hi guys,

Hoping someone could help.

I received my Satellite Click Mini yesterday and I've currently got it on charge after discovering there are quite a few drivers to be installed before you can actually use the thing.

Whilst the notebook is on charge I'm attempting to download the BIOS update onto my laptop so I can transfer it to my notebook once it is fully charged ... I haven't had any issues downloading the likes of the wifi driver for example but when I attempt to download the BIOS update a new tab opens where Toshiba are asking me for a username and password? I've tried entering my username and password I used to register on this website and I've also tried using a different computer to download it but with no luck. It's worth noting that I was able to partially download the file last night but then it failed half way through downloading?!

Hi,

I have just recently built a new PC which seemed to be running fine but after installing a few games and drivers for a wireless keyboard and mouse I found that on the next boot up the keyboard and mouse would not respond.

I then tried to use my old wired keyboard and mouse to see if that would work but this wasn't getting recognized either, after a few re-boots the wired keyboard and mouse worked but has left me wondering what has caused this to happen.

Is there a common cause for the mouse and keyboard to just not respond?

Finally, for no reason what so ever Windows XP is now asking me to enter a password every time I boot up the PC.

Is there away to remove it?

and

Why would it just start coming up?

Thanks

If Win 8 isn?t supported on your notebook, such driver isn?t available.

But from my knowledge such keys were controlled by Toshiba Value Added Package (for Win Vista and Win 7).
VAP isn?t available for Win 8 / Win 8.1 anymore and has been replaced by Toshiba System Driver.

Maybe you could install such Toshiba System Driver on your notebook which was released for other newer notebook models? it?s definitely worth a try?

I have a home network that includes a Win98 desktop and a Win2K desktop. My problem is that while I can access the Win98 computer (which happens to be named "Bill") from the Win28 computer (which is named "Pat"), when I try to go in the opposite direction, I get a window asking for a password to access the \\Pat files. The window reads "You must supply a password to make this connection". Then below that, "Resource: \\Pat\IPC$". Then a window for the password. If I click "OK" with or without a password, I get a Microsoft Networking Error window, "The password is incorrect, try again". When I click "OK" in that window, Windows returns to the Enter Network Password window.

I cannot modify any settings for IPC$ on the Pat computer, nor can I delete it (as far as I can see it is a resource that I do not need for my particular needs). Nor have I been able to set any permissions that I can find that will allow access from the Win98 computer.

The mystifying part is that the Win2K computer happens to be a dual boot computer that has an original Win2K installation OS and a replacement Win2K OS. This was done using Partition Magic, and each virtual drive is hidden from the other. This came about when the original installation developed a lot of problems with viruses and spyware. Create an account on the 2K machine with the same name/password as is used to logon to the W98 machine. It's not necessary to logon to the 2K machine with this account, it just has to have permission to access the shared files.

This should eliminate the password prompt.

My Toshiba updated to 1607 the other day and I found it wasn't sleeping with the timeout I have set in power options. So I created a new power plan and set the sleep timeout again. When I went to wake the system I found I'd forgotten to disable the option to require a password on wake up. But the option in the options for all my power plans is gone now.

I've always had the system settings configured not to require a password to sign in to windows when it boots up. And that's still working.

Can anyone point me to where this setting may have been moved?
Thanks

I used NETPLWIZ to bypass windows login.
This worked fine for a while, then all of a sudden the login screen started reappearing but the auto sign in still processed.
It's not a train smash, just annoying.
How can I get the process to take place without the screen appearing?

A:Login screen still appears after removing username/ password required

Turn it off and on again.

Sorry if it is dumb sounding reply but I often have to do it. Tick the box on netplwiz, say OK, untick the box and say OK. Keep repeating this until it works.

I've not changed my MS password for years but it still seems to bug me in the same way now and again and resetting netplwiz always works for me.

Hi all,

I am currently using winxp media 2005 on a system bought from Alienware. It has had issues since day one, including, No windows updates, no way to disable chkdsk, no back up copy for any software or hardware driver/programs, and perhaps the worst, the lack of ability to use the system restore disk(my system restore is disabled and cannot be turned on, so Im scared to attempt to use my restore disk) All menu's related to the above mentioned problems simply seem to do nothing, I can go in and click to enable/disbale interact with them, but nothing changes. I know you are thinking I should contact Alienware, but they have voided my warrenty, so Im stuck.

In case you are wondering, when I first recieved my computor, it was crashing to blue screen (the first time i turned it on untill I called them the next day). After calling tech support one of the alienware reps had me open the case while on the phone with him, and pop my video cards in and out to resolve a possible heat issue.

Well, I was informed later that because I opened the case that all warrenties and tech support are null and void. So.. Im stuck. I'm over it now, I went round and round with them, and ultimately I simply cant afford to fight it in court.

What I was looking for here was recomendations or some guidance in replacing my OS. Im cautious because Alienware uses a modfied version of it's OS and I dont want to encounter issues with my hardware due to Alienwares settings and modificati... Read more

Hello All,

I am posting this here because it appears that we are back in "high season" for the Microsoft Impersonation Scam.  I've recently had a relative get scammed, and although she "cut things off" in mid-scam it was too late and the damage had been done.

These folks exploit a little known feature in Windows (going way back, at least to XP) where they make the machine insist on the entry of a password that's unknown to you before Windows will continue booting.   Even if you guess one of the common ones they use, "1234", no one wants this stuff hanging around on their computers.

None of the typical software packages (e.g., Malwarebytes) can remove this because you have to be able to boot into Windows itself in order to run it.  I'm not even sure it will remove it if you do happen to guess the correct password to allow the system to boot.  I have a tech support request in with Malwarebytes about this and will report back with what I learn.

There is, however, a remarkably simple way to fix this.   I take no credit for having come up with this.  The solution was originally posted by forum participant ghostrlb in post #14 on a thread entitled, This computer is configured... Read more

I'm really not sure what happened to my Windows Media Player; however, I DO have children/teenagers using the same computer - I may never know. My Media Player had been working and in the last week or so when attempting to play a song I receive an error message indicating Media Player is unable to run "due to a missing component".

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program. (Interestingly, the first time I unstalled the program and re-booted - it was still there!?)
I have also made sure the PC is current with regard to Microsoft updates.
The machine is running Windows XP.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance!

Couple important notes about my setup:

All my machines are connected to a domain that I control.Everything is running Windows 8.1 Pro or Enterprise. My Microsoft Account is connected to my domain user account on each machine with settings synced across devices.

What I'm trying to do:
Turn off the automatic lock after sitting idle for a few (maybe ten?) minutes.Turn off the password requirement when clicking the lock screen or waking from sleep.

I somehow figured out how to do this on my desktop (8.1 Enterprise) and can't for the life of me figure out how to do it on my laptop (8.1 Pro).

What I've tried:
Domain-level GPO to disable "Require a password when computer wakes" (both battery and AC power) - confirmed via RSOP that the policy is applied to the machine. Of note, this policy was not defined on my desktop, which currently allows me to disable both sleep and auto-lock with password requirementChanging display timeout and sleep to "never" in the selected power profile.Changing "Password protection on wakeup" in advanced power profile settings as well as in the "Define power buttons" control panel.Turning off the screen saver and ensuring the "require password" option is unchecked.Resetting security policies via User Accounts control panel when I still had an Exchange account connected via EAS in the Mail app. I've since removed that Exchange account entirely.

Any help is really appreciated. Thanks!!

My father is running a 23 inch H-P All-In-One computer running Windows 10, with 8 GB of RAM memory and a 1TB hard drive.
Today he called me and told me that he turned on his computer, and a black screen is displayed with a WHITE message box in the middle of the screen. The message in the box is titled START UP PASSWORD. The text of the message says "This computer is configured for a Start Up Password " Then it has a blank spot to type in the password.

Yesterday, he received the message that the computer was infected and NOT to turn it off. He was supposed to call a number listed on the screen. The phone number, and a mailing address are in Las Vegas. The guy he spoke with wanted money, so my father told him to "F.U." and hung up. Then he turned off the computer.

My father is 10 hours away, and is thinking of mailing the computer to me to fix.
Any ideas on how to get around this error message?

At the top of the keyboard where the F keys are (F1, F2...) you will find a key on the far right side titled Pause Break. If you press this key when that message comes on the screen this will freeze it so that you can read it. Please let us know what it is reporting.

Welcome to TSG Forums, yummynum!

Short answer to your question is, no, they should not be harming your computer. The infected files were moved to a place where they're not allowed to do much of anything. Jail, so to speak. It is suggested that you delete the "quarantined" inmates, as they still exist on your computer, only in an imprisioned form.

You might consider downloading and running HiJack This, and posting the log in a separate thread, in the Security sub-forum here. Virii and malware come in packs often, and finding one or a few is often a sign that more exist elsewhere on your box.

Hope this helps.

I run Windows XP and have just installed Windows Media Player 11. I then went online to watch media content but I got directed to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919589 about upgrading a security component. It needs me to log on as Administrator, but I have no idea what my password is. A user name of Mike appears in the dropdown (that's logical - it's my name) but I'm now stuck on the pasword issue. Help please.
