Need power tips reference for Kensington laptop power adapter

Q: Need power tips reference for Kensington laptop power adapter

The tips I got with this Kensington 33197 power adapter have numbers stenciled on them like N3, N5, N19, etc. The tips sold on their web site make no mention of the "N" numbers and have numbers like K20059, K20050, etc. and there is no cross reference.

You can also see a complete reference for "N" numbers to all the laptops they support at the above link. Again, no mention of the numbers Kensington uses on their site.

I need a cross reference for these kinds of numbers.

Kensington referred me to their telephone tech support; but, there is a language or cultural barrier that prevents their understanding what I need.

Does anyone know of such a reference?

I bought this Kensington 120-watt power supply and boy do I like it. It was cheap (under $30 on ebay including shipping) and of excellent quality and works great both in the car and at home; but, I can't find a place to buy extra tips. The tip number I would like to find is the N19.

Even Kensington tells me they are out of them.

My laptop will no longer turn on.  When the AC adapter is plugged in, the LED light is white indicating power is arriving at the laptop. However, nothing happens when I push the power button. Troubleshooting steps I have completed already include: Hard reset (several times including after each step below)Tried starting without the batteryRemoved all removable components and reseated themRemoved all removable components as well as bottom cover. Cleaned with compressed air. Put everything back.Nothing appears wrong and nothing happened between the last time it turned on and this time that I am aware of. The laptop is out of warranty, and I am pretty handy with computers. Is there anything that can be suggested short of a hardware replacement that would help get this resolved? TIA

This is a recent problem - a previous adapter broke and now subsequent adapters use 100% CPU and sloooow my laptop.

It's an hp 6720s 13 months old, XP Home, HP 65W power adapter.

Laptop running fine on battery only. Laptop runs fine when battery removed and power adapter is connected. Laptop does not run fine when battery and power adapter connected - 100% CPU.

Also, the charge indicator light no longer works and the power icon does not show that the battery is charging, although it is.

I've updated the BIOS, restored factory power settings and tested the power adapter during startup and have the same prob with the CPU usage.

What could cause the power adapter to use 100% CPU? Please let me know if you need more info, cheers.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop (circa 2003). I know my laptop battery has been drained for a while and I was almost solely relying on the AC adapter's juice to power my machine. Recently, I lost all power to the laptop. I thought perhaps my battery had finally had it so I bought a new battery. Well, then I couldn't charge my battery, so I bought a new AC adapter. I still have no juice. It looks like the AC adapter is working (the light is on it to show it's getting power) but it's not transferring that power to the machine.

I think it may be a bad connection between the adapter plug and the laptop. I don't know how involved of a fix this is.

Any suggestions on what type of fix might be needed? Is it better to just scrap this laptop and get a new one? Thanks for your help!

Since i bought a new laptop E7270, is it allowed to use my power adaptor my old Dell E6420 also for the new one?   If so i can use one adaptor at home and another in office and dont need to carry the power adaptor always.
Will this impact the battery performance of the new laptop?

A:If it is possible to use the power adapter of E6420 for my new laptop E7270? Will it impact the battery of the new laptop?

If the connector fits (it may not - the older systems use a much larger barrel connector than many of the new ones), AND the power (wattage) is equal or greater, yes.

i have a 3 year old xps l502x. Last night I was working on it and I had turned battery charging off even though it was connected to the adapter. A friend of mine removed it and worked on it for a while. When I took it from him it was showing about 20% battery. I plugged it in and turned the charging on, as soon as i unselected stop charging battery,, the laptop turned off and the led on the charger also did the same. I trieed to turn it on again but it just wont do it, the charger is fine, i used other chargers, with the battery without the battery everything but the problem persists. Is the motherboard fried? I didn't smell any burning. My lappy isn't under warranty what should i do? Can the data be saved?

I am writing this from my desktop. I just got a new HP Laptop (Pavilion) which came with a 45W power adapter. The power cord section (which plugs into the adapter) is shorter than the one on my older HP Laptop (G60-63OUS Notebook). I would like to have a longer power cord section or, in the alternative, could I/should I use an extension cord to reach the wall outlet I want to use. The older laptop has a 65w power adapter. I have 2 questions:

#1 - Can the power cord section from the 65w adapter be used in place of the one that came with the new laptop? I would, in effect, be mixing the two because the 65w adapter plug is too big for the hole on the laptop.

#2 - Can I get a higher power adapter for the new laptop or should I leave it alone?
Another question I have is regarding the use of cordless earphones to watch TV while working on the laptop. When the laptop is plugged in (to recharge the battery), I get static noise in my left ear. When on battery only, there is no noise. Is there a solution to this?

A:Laptop AC Power Supply Cord and Adapter

#1 Yes, if the older adapter's power cord fits into the new adapter you can use it.

#2 There's no need to get a more powerful adapter, the new laptop must not need as much power as the old one.

The situation: Dell Inspiron 600M. Laptop won't turn on, when I press the power button, no response (at all). I think it's either the power supply or the adapter. The only reason I think it is the adapter is because the green LED doesn't come on, but the user said it hadn't been coming on for some time before the laptop stopped working altogether. The user has already gotten a new computer and really only cares about the data. I'm trying to decide the best direction to go: Adapter or SATA/ATA to USB converter? I'm pretty set on the converter, but want to make sure I won't have to reformat the HD for it to work with the adapter. I think the laptop has a PATA HD connection. Will it work on most of the converters?
Another side note: I have had no success yet finding another adapter that worked. I did try an adapter for an Inspiron e1705 (90W) and when I plugged it in it reset the adapter. I thought the adapter for the 600M was also 90, but I guess not.

I currently have a XPS 12-9Q33 laptop that is not charging. The light at the end of the power adapter is no longer lighting up so it appears to be faulty. I've called Dell to purchase a new adapter but was told that they no longer sell replacements for them and was recommended to buy an adapter from a 3rd party source.
I purchased a replacement with the same voltage and amperage that is supposed to work on a XPS 12. The laptop now powers on but will not charge. The BIOS states that the adapter is unknown and will not allow it to charge.
What can I do now? I find it really frustrating that I cannot get a direct replacement from Dell themselves so I'm stuck with a laptop that is not portable at all since the battery is at 0%

I've just had my adapter for two months and it's starting to show signs of 'aging'. It's a laptop adapter for Acer Aspire 5750G laptop. The problem is it doesn't work on certain extension wire socket that it USED to work on after 2 months. It only worked on direct sockets. The laptop's charging LED light would flicker orange-coloured on/off but the laptop itself would not charge. When I shutdown my laptop only then it shows a sign of chargingbut after a while, it would not charge at all from that particular extension socket. Other kinds of extension sockets also show the same result.

So, what's the real problem here-the extension sockets or the laptop adapter? By the way, I usually coil up the wires so that it fits into my bag. Is that one of the causes of this 'aging' phenomenon?

I have a Dell Vostro 1400 running Vista Home Basic and have had two periods in the laptop's existence where it would mysteriously freeze. You could see everything on the screen, and the power lights were on, but it would not respond except to a hard reboot by holding the power butting down for 5 seconds.

I am going through one of those periods now, and have discovered that the problem happens when I am either plugging or unplugging the AC power adapter, but don't know why. I have been all over the web for a solution, and while it does seem I am not alone with this problem, I have not read a sensible solution yet. My favorite bad answer is "don't unplug your laptop when it's on."

So, does anyone know what it could be? I wanted to look at system logs, and so went into the Event Viewer not even sure what to look for, but didn't see anything that looked like a likely culprit. Please help!

Thanks,
Neil

A:laptop freezes when plugging and unplugging AC power adapter

being a member of the Dell Community Forum, I looked there and found this

A lot things happen in Windows when inserting the AC power adapter.

To check if it's a classic CPU lock-up: repeatedly press capslock. If the capslock light doesn't change, there's no live in there.

Assuming the CPU is locked up: It's possible there's a log entry in the system log just before the AC power adapter is inserted. These entries give clues where to look, just before things went sour.

Next try to reproduce it in Safe Mode (press F8 when Windows start) If it's also in Safe Mode - try running an alternative OS (no need to install)

If the problem also shows up here - most likely it's a hardware issue.

Otherwise it's a windows issue - might be driver related.

the "alternate OS thing is a link on the forum web site. Click here to go to that site.

Hope this is some help... Raybro

My laptop will not stay on adapter power unless the adapter plug is pressed hard against the port. I bought a new adapter but the problem still remains so I guess it's the port's problem but I have no idea how to have it fixed. The laptop is no longer under warranty. Where can I buy a new adapter port and would it be too much like brain surgery to try to do it myself?

Thanks for any help,

A:Solved: Power adapter port on laptop - how to replace?

These ports are soldered to the motherboard. Replacing/repairing them consists of removing the motheboard from the laptop and soldering a new powerconnector on.

Definately not a do it yourself type thing. I would suggest a competent local computer shop. This service usually runs around $100 in my area. The challenge will be finding someone willing to work on laptops anymore.

First of all Im pretty tech savy so you can talk to me in technical terms. Ive repaired countless computers for many people and I never came across anything like this. This is the problem...

Sometimes when I move my laptop or even type there is a complete loss of power. Everything completely shuts off. It happens whether my laptop is plugged in the AC adapter or not. I bought a new battery just in case it was that and its still happening even with the new battery. Event Viewer System logs tell me nothing except that is recovered from an unexpected shutdown. I suspected that maybe there was something loose inside so I took the laptop completely apart and put it back together... still im getting the same loss of power.

Now here's a hint that can possible be causing this. When I get this loss of power I cant turn back on my computer unless I unplug the AC adapter and remove the battery for a few seconds and put it back in.

Any idea's guys? Ive searched the web and havent found much on this issue nor a resolution so if we do find a solution bleepingcomputer.com might be one of the first to figure it out. If need be give me a better suggestion for the title of this thread so it can be searched for easier. Thanks in advance guys, lets see if we can figure this out.

Hi RAYB871,
Please check if there is any damage on the machine. Check if all the ports on the machine are fine or misaligned. Sometimes if the pins in the USB ports are touching each other, they are known to cause many issues on the machine.
Three components cause this issue, in this order:
Adapter - you have already tested another adapter, so ruled out.
DC Port - the port that holds the adapter in, might be shorted - you would need this part - http://bit.ly/2bQ3HoP
Motherboard - I would primarily suspect this part, if the dc port does not fix the issue, then it is the motherboard that has failed and needs to be replaced.
If there is no warranty, then you could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call - http://dell.to/1vnT6CQ
Personally, I would suggest, you invest your money on a new machine than to repair this old machine. However, it is your discretion.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

Sometimes it doesn't turn on at all for days, but sometimes I click the power button and it boots within 15-30 minutes. When i click the power button, nothing happens at all for that duration. For the last two weeks, every time I start my Dell INSPIRON E1705 while using the power supply I am greeted with the following message. "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 90W AC adapter or higher for best system operation". I press the F1 Key and everything works fine. I've read about this on other websites and most say it's a design flaw in the power supply after the cord has been properly wound around the supply as designed. Apparently a few of the cords internal wire strands become broken and cause this message. My computer is from June 2006 and shouldn't be having this issue so early...or ever. This seems like a flaw that should have created some type of manufacturers recall since so many people are having this issue. I'm of course out of warranty, will Dell replace this free of charge?

`

A:Power Supply - "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined....."

You are correct, the failure is due toloss of the power supply ID signal. Sometimes this happens because of strain on the plug, which breaks the signal wire. Some even are so severe that the insulation breaks away from the plug; this is due to rough handling. The other cause is one or more of the power socket solder connections to the system board become broken. This also is related to severe handling. I have seen one case where all three power connections and three of four mechanical connections were disconnected. If the power supply is bad, a replacement will cure the problem. If not, then the socket is bad, and this will require a system board replacement. If you are experienced, you can try to resolder the connections. I am experienced and was not able to get my daughter's E6000 to work by resoldered. More recent Dells are using a replacable power connection board which is a much cheaper repair.

Hello, I have a ProBook 640 G1 that will not power on. After pressing the power button, with a battery installed and the AC adapter attached, the Charging LED blinks white 9 times . Unplugging the AC adapter results in 9 amber blinks. The light on the AC Adapter itself remains solid green. With the battery removed, and attached to the AC Adapter, three lights blink continously : The light on the power button (white), the Charging LED (AMBER), and the Power LED (White). The light on the AC Adapter itself remain solid green. In both cases pressing or pressing and holding the power button has no effect. There is no indication that power is actually making in to the MB; no BIOS , nothing at all. I do not have access to another unit with the same battery or AC adapter in order to try swapping those out. Thanks,Shane

Hey, got quite a problem with my laptop.. It's a Medion Erazer X7813, worked well for ~2 years.
I was doing a graphics card benchmark yesterday and it stopped in the middle of it(monitored temperature, it was at ~80 degrees Celsius when it turned off). No bluescreen or anything just off and I couldnt restart after that(no fans nothing). I thought it might be the power supply, so I tested it, but it was doing 19v when not plugged in, but when I plugged it in and unplugged it again it was at 1v. When testing I unintentionally shorted the power supply and it showed 1v after that just as it did after plugging it in, is it shorting inside the laptop? Could it be the battery or something more serious like the MB? Any ideas are welcome!

Needing some advice please. I have a HP Probook 6470b laptop which a friend wants me to fix again, at one point he dropped his laptop and had the same power fault and when I discharged the CAPS and turned it on it worked, however this time trying the technique isn't doing it. I've tried with discharging and only putting in the battery, discharging and only putting in the AC adapter, discharging and put in both Ac adapter and Battery, I've tried taking out the HDD and RAM and tried discharging, I've tried taking out each individual component and testing but to no avail. At this point I'm thinking a motherboard issue as I'm thinking that my friend has dropped it plenty more times as I see more dents on it which could have broken a copper track. Does anyone else think this is a suitable diagnostic? I've ruled out the battery as I'm getting 10.55V output and the AC adapter I'm getting 19V as it states it should be. I'm asking if this diagnostics seems correct as I don't want to waste money or time on getting a motherboard if it's not the motherboard but I'm thinking that's the best bet. Cheers

I had my power adapter plugged into my laptop, as normal, but the power indicator light did not come on as normal when I plugged it in before I opened the lid. It works in battery mode when I open the lid. My Toshiba PC Health monitor tells me the battery is "good." I'm using it now and it seems OK in battery mode. And yes, I checked the unit and cords--look fine. Power is on. There are no "stupid" mistakes on my part. Is there any way to check the "power adapter" in the laptop (laptop side--I don't mean the external one) using the Win 8 OS? I know this is probably a "hardware" problem but I figured I see if I could get any information from Windows 8 about the issue. I went into the device manager and checked the properties of Microsoft AC Adapter and Compliant control method battery, both under the "Batteries" section. I checked what seemed could be related to power under System Devices, and all say "This device is working properly." It is like the computer doesn't recognize it is plugged in to an AC source. If anyone knows a Win 8 method to check anything before I try to order an adapter or so forth, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

I often have my laptop plugged in to an inverter, plugged in to the car. I need it to power on by itself, when there is power from the inverter.

Any ideas?
regards
ben

Do you mean you need to power it on by pressing such a power button, maybe located in elsewhere on your laptop?

My laptop was fine a few days ago but now when I plug it into the wall ac power the laptop will not turn on at all no noise. However when I plug the power cord in I do get a light for the battery charging,(yet to see if battery will take a full charge and come on) but so far nothing. Any ideas as to fixing this or why this could happen. can I get files from laptop harddrive to my pc? Remove laptop hard drive and connect to my pc? Thanks

A:No Ac Power or Battery power to Laptop

Sounds like a major failure in the laptop.

You can buy adapters for laptop HDD to Desktop IDE drives, quite cheaply. That will allow you to access the files on the hard drive.

USB cases are also quite reasonable for laptop hard drives and give an easy way to access the drive.

OK had a look through your dump files and a few things stuck out at me:

First please install service pack 1:

Learn how to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

next please update the following driver it seems to be causing all sorts of problems as it is present in almost all of your dump files:

I recently bought a replacement power adapter for my dell e1505. The computer works but it won't charge the battery and tells me that since the computer does not recognize the charger, I need to reseat the power adapter... What does that mean?

A:Power Adapter

Hello aaronbaron,

Reseat the power adapter just means make sure the power adapter is plugged in good on the laptop and the wall outlet. I would try powering off the laptop, unplug the power cord, take the new battery out. Reinstall the new battery only and try to power on the computer. If that does not work plug in the power cord and power up with the new battery installed.

I have a Toshiba Satellite C655D that needs a replacement ac power adapter, when I look it up it says I need:

or

Laptop AC Adapter: 19 Volts, 65 Watts, 3.42 Amps, 5.5mm x 2.5mm Connector

Someone gave me a new, in the box AC Adapter with USB port, made by Insignia.
The documentation says "converts 120v AC to 3-12v with 1300mA max output."

Can I use 45 Watt adapter for dell inspiron 15 5559?? I got the adapter along with the laptop when I bought it. But a warning is displayed on screen prompting me to use 65 Watt adapter... If so why 65 Watt adapter wasn't given with the laptop instead of 45 Watt?

A:Power adapter

Hi SUSMI,
The system is designed to support both 45W and 65W adapters - see the specifications here - http://dell.to/2fhPLIf
When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

I bought a Dynex USB 2.0 4-Port Hub last week and have decided to add an external power supply to power the hub. The short and terse User Manual notes on the final page that a 5Volt / 2.5 Amp Power Adapter may be connected. I called their customer support number and talked to a lady, but her best advice was return to the store and ask there. My experience with this store over the years has been fat chance for this kind of request. Has anyone got a suggestion as to where I can purchase such a USB Power Adapter?

A:USB Hub Power Adapter

Radio Shack would be a good place to start although you might have to get one of their adjustable models. A Google search should also turn up something. Actually I just replaced my D-Link powered USB1 hub with a USB2 model. The old one is just sitting around and it has a 5V 2.4A adapter. If you want it so you can use the adapter just PM me and I'll send it to you.

This is a common problem (I see lots of posts)
The problem source is the [Dell] AC adapter.  PA-21 Family, 65W, P/N: NX061.  It is made in China.
I have an XPS M1330.  Using Dell after warranty service, replaced the Mother Board twice, replaced the battery twice, replaced the AC adapter twice - not fixing it.
Turns out the power warning message is very informative.  It states "Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for best system performance".  So, I plugged in my Dell 95W adapter - WOW Problem Solved.
A lab test of my new Dell 65W AC adapter shows it to be 64.6 watts.  If this unit gets hot (like after several hours of use), it may not put out the full 65 watts - the system may not recognize the adapter, it may power the system ok, but won't charge the battery.
These units burn out after only a few months of use. Their cables are too fragile. If Dell's or their supplier's Quality Control can't produce a reliable 65W product - I found seveal "Made In USA" universal adapters.

A:AC Adapter - Alert - "AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined"

Well my solution was simple.
I just removed the battery pack and powered up my notebook. Then I turned off the notebook replaced the battery pack and VOILA. The error message was gone.

Is there a maximum length for the dc cord? In other words why do they locate the adapter 1/2 way down the cord instead of closer to the outlet.

Is the small cylinder around the cord about 3" before it enters the laptop some sort of choke/filter?

Thanks.

There is no particular reason for this, either side of the power supply could be lengthened or shortened.

I have a 20 pin motherboard but the power supply I have available has a 24 pin connector. I've read that you can simply plug them together by offsetting the 24 pin one but so far I don't see that working at all (and 'never the twain shall meet', so to speak). I've found adapters but they all say something akin to

'allows you to connect your existing 20 pin power supply to your new 24-pin compatible motherboard'

You can use it the other way around, correct?

thanks

A:20 to 24 pin power supply adapter

Some mainboard connectors are 20+4 pins where the 4 pins unsnap from the 20 pins for use with boards with a 20 pin connector. If your power supply doesn't have that feature you would use an adapter such as this.

I have a Precision 7510 updated with the latest Bios and drivers. Today my TB15 arrived. I haven't tested connecting a monitor to it yet only a network cable and USB 3.0 stick - this worked fine.
I also tried starting the laptop from the button on the TB15 which also works fine.
However on startup I receive an error message:
"Alert! You have attached an undersized 130W power adapter to you system, which is less than the recommended 180W power adapter" ... message carries on a bit.
Now the thing is both the TB15 power adapter and 7510 power adapter are the same (identical part number) and  are shown to be 180W output.
What's the problem here and what do I need to do ?

I am planning on making this project myself but first I have one question. Here is the project I will be making:
http://siliconrepublic.blogspot.com.au/2011/02/arduino-based-pc-ambient-lighting.html

It says I need a 12V DC supply for powering the breadboard. When searching up for 12V DC supplies, I only get power supply's that plug into the wrong wall socket (I live in Australia).
Do I need to get something like the article suggests:
http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-AC-Veh...1KZ6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1297231222&sr=8-2

Or can I get something such as this:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DC-12V-1...?pt=AU_Laptop_Accessories&hash=item336678ae52
If the first option is the only possibility, how do I get the plug to go into my wall socket?
Also, how do I get the other end plugged into the breadboard when the product just has a single plug on the end?

A:What type of power adapter do I need?

You can use the Ebay adaptor, the easiest way to get 2 wires is to get a socket that fits the plug, like this one :- http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/5-5-x-2-...05?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item4167b5b34d and solder 2 wires to that socket.

The circuit at your link uses a 2 wire plug into the breadboard, you would have to get a similar plug OR you could push bare wires into the breadboard.

OR you could cut the plug off to reveal the 2 wires but they will probably be quite thin and may not connect well if pushed into the breadboard holes.

Though I had posted this previously, but cannot find it anywhere!

Got an Altec Lansing Multimedia Computer Speaker System ACS41. Apparently they were used on a Gateway 2000 PC.
However, the power adapter was lost.
The speakers do not have any electrical specs on them regarding voltage, amps, and polarity.

Anyone have a similar set of speakers, or,
know of any way this type of info can be found out, in order to get the right power adapter for them. Do not care to fry them with an overkill. The speakers probably came with PCs running Windows 98SE, or Windows Millennium.

Prefer not to go to Radio Shack, they normally are rather expensive, and the people who own this do not want to go that route.

The Yoga 3 Pro power adapter looks like a normal USB brick, and the cord looks like USB, except with a kink in the connector at the Yoga 3 Pro end. Can I charge my phone or tablet with it?

A:What's with the Yoga 3 Pro power adapter - it's a ...

Yes the Yoga 3 Pro power adapter is a USB charger too!

How does it work?

The special "fool proof" charging cord has two extra pins on the AC adapter end and two extra pins on the Yoga 3 Pro end. The extra pins only make a connection when the fool proof cord is plugged in to the Lenovo charger and the Yoga 3 Pro. When a regular USB cord is plugged into either the charger or the Yoga 3 Pro, it makes a regular USB connection.

Can I charge the Yoga 3 Pro with any USB charger?

No. The Yoga 3 Pro requires 2A at 20V, which is what the provided 40W Lenovo AC adapter supplies.

Can I charge a USB device with the Yoga 3 Pro AC adapter?

Absolutely. In addition to 2A at 20, the Yoga 3 Pro AC adapter supplies 2A at 5.2V (10.4W), enough to charge a phone or tablet. Works for iPad.

Where can I buy spare AC adapters and cords?

AC adapters with cords are sold in the accessories section of the Lenovo store.

Where do I find the part numbers for the AC adapter and cord?

Look for AC Adapters In the PDF Yoga 3 Pro Hardware Maintenance Manual.

What are the USB specs of the Yoga 3 charging port?

It's a USB 2.0 port. It provides enough power to charge an iPhone, but not enough to charge an iPad. If you want to charge an iPad, try the USB 3.0 port on the right of the Yoga 3 Pro.

My neighbour was given a second-hand computer and asked for my help setting it up.

It is a Dell Optiplex 755 running Win7.

Currently installed graphics is NVidia Quadro FX 3500.

I looked up the service tag and this is not the original card (Original was ATI HD2400XT).

The issue I have is that the FX3500 is an 80W card, with the PCI-E slot having a max of 75W. On booting I get low power warnings from the NVidia card.

The card has a 6 pin PCI-E connection available for the additional power, but the PSU has no PCI-E power cable.

The only free power cables from the PSU are a couple of 15pin SATA cables. I have seen adapter cables for 15pin SATA to 6 pin PCI-E. Are these any good for my situation?

If not, what are the alternatives? New PSU? Different GFX card?

A:Power adapter cable for PCI-E

A:Power adapter center pin

Sounds like the Centre pin has broken away and lodged itself in the plug. I cannot tell you which is positive and which is negative with regards to the rings on the plug. Because different Manufacturers use different combinations and with that different Voltages too. Generally speaking the outside piece is the male end and the receiving plug is the female -go figure-

I have a Inspiron 15 3541 touch screen and "misplaced" my power cord and adapter. I'm using a Dell adapter from a different computer, but when I turned on my laptop, I get a message requiring a system or admin password even before it boots up. Is this because of the different adapter? How many pins did my adapter have? What problems does a different adapter create?

A:Power adapter pins

The password that is showing up before your computer boots sounds like there is a BIOS password set on the computer.  Unfortunately if you don't remember that password then you are probably stuck.  You can probably go online and search and see if there is a way to reset BIOS on the laptop and get it to default and remove the password that is set on it.  If there is a hard drive password though then the only way to remove that if you forgot it is to install a new hard drive as the password will follow the drive, not the computer.
Your power supply should have only 1 pin.  Dell used the same adapter for their computers for a while, they come in different wattage though and if you use an adapter that is too low then it may not be able to charge the battery while you use it or at all.  If the plug fits and it is a Dell charger you should be okay to at least get the computer up and running.  If it is a low wattage charger and the setting is set in BIOS (usually is by default) you'll get a message from your computer telling you that the charger isn't powerful enough to charge the battery while in use.

I recently bought a new HP laptop & was supplied with a cable suited for Europe not Australia. The message below came up after I plugged the cable in using a univeral power adapter. I contacted HP about getting a replacement cable which arrived today & once again the same message popped up.  Is this something to be ignored? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone.

I know that this is not really entirely related to a Windows 7 computer and especially to these forums, but I really need some advice on this and it would be great if anyone who has experience in voltage, amps and safety for laptop power adapters would be perfect.

My friend has just traveled down to my house for a week but has foolishly forgot his plug for the power socket on his power adapter. He uses this for his computer. Again unrelated becuase it is an Apple 45W MagSafe2 adapter.

So I was wondering if he could simply use a cord like this one below to plug into the adapter?
The black cord is 2.5A 250V~

The adapter is 100-240V~ 1A

These are both for input.

Any help would be greatly appreciated .

A:Power Adapter Problem

That white 'thing' appears to be for an Apple Macintosh MacBook/MacBook Pro [I have a MacBook Pro] and you might not be able use the black cord due to fit, the V-shaped notch in the black plug would have to let it be inserted. But it probably won't hurt to try as it's still a 110/120Volt source.

The MacBook power adapter also came with a piece that replaced that cord and has the prongs to plug directly into a wall socket/extension cord, maybe it's in his Notebook bag.

I have a 90w power adapter from an older notebook that will work with my HP DV5-1015nr. I transport my notebook between home and office. I'd like to utilize the older power brick, so that I won't need to transport a power brick back and forth. The tips on both adapters, of course, are of a different diameter.      My multi-tester identifies that the tip is hot for both adapters. The problem I have is that the older power brick has two wires: core wire (+) and shield (-), and the newer power adapter has three wires: shield that is connected to the core of tip (+), black that is connected to outer part of cylindrical shaft that must be the ground, and white connected to inner part of cylindrical shaft (also negative?). So do the black and white wires on the newer adapter need to be soldered to the shield on the older one?

A:Wiring for Power adapter?

Just a guess, since it is 90watt, they may have run the extra wire to carry the load, shield is always much larger than center tip wire. Did you measure voltage and ploarity of all three connections with the brick plugged in? Tip is always + and ouside is always - on a HP, not sure what the third is, see if there is any voltage on it, It could also be some sort of sensor wire for the charging system on the mobo. Better to buy another adapter than smoke the motherboard on the lappy taking a chance. If you want to chance it just connect the two wires that are on the center and outside. Leave the 3rd odd one unconnected. probably can be found used for cheap.

I have an Acer 3690 laptop. Recently the original power adapter went bad. I went to a local computer company and had them order me a new one. The day I got it home and plugged it in the adapter smoked and the plastic split showing bare wires. We returned the adapter and they exchanged it for another one. The day we took the new one home it did the same thing. Any ideas what could be the problem???

I had the power cord replaced last year. But now I find the power box cord is not working. My battery died completely and even with the power cord plugged in, my laptop will not work. The box, even after replacing the power cord, still got extremely hot. Now I can't use my laptop at all! What do I do andhow much is it going to cost? Why is this not on a recall?

So I Noticed my laptop has stopped charging,"AC Adapter Can Not Be Recognized" I have the Dell 130w power supply plugged in and it refuses to charge I have tried the dell fix it (take the adapter apart and back in) that has not worked, so i thought hey its the "Dell Power Management" that is stopping my laptop from charging.... WHY can I not disable it?? Dell own bad software is stopping my laptop from detecting its AC cable and the same software is "protecting my laptop" by stopping it from charging. How do I get a new AC cable or how do I disable the Software?
