Many Laptops allow you to switch the video.
Mine allows Panel only, VGA only, or Both.
Look for a Function key combination to switch it. My Dell uses FnF8

I have a Dell inspiron e1405 and recently it has been unable to get on the Internet. It shows that it's connected to my wireless router and has excellent signal strength but when I open Internet explorer it says "Internet explorer cannot display the webpage". I have tried changing the website address and no website works. I also know that my router is not the problem because I am able to connect to it with my I pod touch and my rommates computer connects
to it as well. I have tried going into Internet options to make sure that the proxy server box is unchecked and I have also ran network diagnostics on my computer to look for any problems and everything passed but under the Internet service category the default outlook express mail and news both failed and it also says that the Internet web proxy is not configured. And I don't know what that means or how to fix it. I tried to backup my hard drive onto m d: drive so I could reinstall widows xp but the back up stopped because it didn't have enough room
for everything. I don't mind wiping my computer but I would first like to save everything on it becase there's a lot I need on it. limewire...anyway title isn't the best but lets move on

safe mode instruction http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm <--- might not be helpful tho

do you have a recovery CD/DVD this might be from dell or might say windows xp or some OS you are currenty using.... I am going to assume you are using xp as you stated under your username.

----------------------------------------------

basicly I belive something has happened to your boot loader and you saying "he downloaded limewire" indecates virus.... limewire is a p2p networking software sharing files and stuff legel and illegel stuff. assuming limewire is from www.limewire.com/

Hi everybody,

I'm new to this forum. A moderator from Microsoft forum told me about this site.

I have a old Windows Vista that I'm trying to service myself. Just the basis operating problems.  I wanted to know if anyone had a opinion about running more that one anti-virus program. At present, I'm running Malwarebytes Ant-Malware(Free) program version 2.2.0.1024, Microsoft Security Essentials and tdsskiller application (4,618kb). Since putting in the Malwarebytes, the system runs better---finding 5 virus that it removed out of about 320,000 scanned items. I wanted to put in some other ant-virus programs, but I'm not sure if it's good for the operating system. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks to Bleeping Computer.com for this great forum.

Thanks

Welcome to BC...
No need to burden the old computer with more than one antivirus. Purchasing MBAM would be a good idea especially if
you are prone to picking malware and adware.

Post the log showing what MBAM found and deleted/ quarantined. You can find the log by clicking on
the History tab.....the scan log..not the update logs.

Use the programs below to find and remove adware and malware. Always better to use more than just one scanner.

Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the
Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.
After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.
CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

Download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Scan button.
When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

Inspirion 15 Dell Labtop crashed - Download windows 8.1 to reinstall
Dear Support Helpdesk,
My labtop has crashed and  I recently upgraded to windows 10. Now my computer will not boot up and let me provide my password to get into the system.
A blue screen comes on and indicates:

"RECOVERY"
Your PC/Device needs to be repaired
The boot configuration Data file is missing some required information
File:\BCD
Error Code: 0xc0000034
You'll need to use recovery tools. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your PC Administrator or PC/Device manufacturer.
Please tell me you can help and the "FIX IT" is simple? I'm the PC Administrator and am at an end of the rope and have no idea what to do next, but download windows upgrade 8.1 on a DVD-R and put it on my laptop? Can you walk me thru this if infact
I can do this and this is the only solution. In-addition, I'm currently on a budget and on Disability and obviously can't afford to by anything to fix the laptop and looking for a free at hand solution. Which I should mention have no product key code in case
I might need one. If I do need one "QUESTION: Can I get one somewhere for free?"

I've been trying to rollback my OS on my Windows 7 Dell XPS 15(501) labtop to a XP64 bit version of Windows with NO success. I've done this sort of thing on my desktop, also from Dell (630i) and had success after I slipstreamed the appropriate SATA drivers onto the Xp install disc. But for my neweer xps 15 labtop it's not working when I try and do a Windows xp install. I get the standard BSOD at "Starting Windows."

I know, or at least I think Im getting the right drivers for this PC.

Specs:

Windows 7 64 bit Home
Dell XPS L501X XPS 15
Intel Mobile 5 Series express chipset HM57
Intel 5 Series 6 port ACHI SATA Controller
Just bought this brand new from Dell earlier this year, and just wondering if anyone has got new Dell machines, especially this model and exact specs to work with XP64bit.

Ive already tried downloading the latest driver from Intel (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?lang=eng&DwnldID=20110)

The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop with Windows Vista OS. I have a Dell 926 printer interfaced to it via USB. Printer driver is installed and the printer does communicate at times with the computer and does a good job printing. However, intermittently when trying to print a document I'll get a message on the computer that says that communication has been lost and print job failed.

I've checked all connections to make sure they are solid and no debris that might cause this.
That has not corrected the problem.
The other thing that happens is that the document I want to print will stay in the print queue/spooler and if I shut the computer and printer down and restart both it will print the job. And it may continue to print jobs but it's just a matter of time.

Needless to say this is frustrating. I can print several jobs in a row with no problem and then I'll get this "communication has been lost between printer and computer". And I have to go thru the procedure above to get the last job printed.

My wife doesn't understand how this works and will try to print the same job several times with the commo problem and then complains when it won't print.....and then they all print when the above procedure is followed.

Any ideas what is going on??? Any fixes??

So over the past 2-3 weeks I kept noticing that my battery kept dying even though I would shut it down (yes window > shutdown) the computer with a full battery. The next evening I would power up and see that the battery was at 20% from full charge. This is a BRAND NEW as in <2 months XPS 9550. I checked my event log and WHAT THE H@#$??? It is absolutely filled with Dell Foundation Service and Dell Product Registration events all saying  " Power event Handled Successfully by the service." Clearly it is not.. The stupid things run every 10 seconds. So when I think I am powering down my computer, it is being blocked by these services and actually just going to sleep... but it actually isn't sleeping. Its waking up every 10 seconds. Can anyone PLEASE help me determine the issue. Apparently according to update service everything is up to date.

Two months ago bought a Dell 8900 from Best Buy. After 20 days, it would not start, same with the next 8900 replacement... only fewer days. The first gameware as a replacement did not start at all. The Alienware Aurora worked beautifully for 3 days and then would not start. In the 8900's,,, got the blinking amber lights on the start button. Tech is coming to replace motherboard. What the heck is happening? Could it be the monitor... or the external hard drive or what? Come on Dell,,, what's up? I have a Dell XP Laptop as a back up using the same external hard ddrive.

Was given a Dell Optiplex 360 that I found out after getting a nasty virus had a bootleg XP OS
I also did not have any disks with it. I had older disks for a Dell 4600 that I used to wipeout the hard drive and install the new OS. Everything works fine except that I can not load any of the drivers from the second disk, (it was a 3 disk series)
thus at least at this point not able to connect with my cable internet. Cable people told me I needed the drivers.Any suggestions or can it just not be done.
Thanks, Al

A:Loading Older Dell OS To Newer Dell Computer

You will have to go to the dell website look under support and then drivers and downloads for your model of computer. If you use the service tag number on the computer it will make sure you get the correct ones you need. For future reference so you wont have this hassle again burn all of the drivers to a cd so you will be all set the next time.

I have a Dell Inspiron 530, XP PRO, SP3, about a year and a half old. Almost since I first got it, every few months or so, when I boot up it hangs on the Dell screen. When I turn it off and reboot, it is fine. I use Rebit to back up everything on an ongoing basis and have an extended warranty from Dell. Is there anything I can do about this, or should do? Thanks for your help.

I would run a memory tester

Download the prebuilt ISO, burn it to CD as an Image, boot from that CD and run the memory test for a couple of hours or overnight to stress test the memory.

At the DISKPART prompt, type: list volume
Make note of the number of the simple volume whose drive letter you want to assign, change, or remove.
At the DISKPART prompt, type: select volume n
Select the volume, where n is the volume's number, whose drive letter you want to assign, change, or remove.
At the DISKPART prompt, type one of the following: assign letter=L
Where L is the drive letter you want to assign or change.

I definitely turn it on, and it has plenty of batteries, because the two light on the side of the bottom of the labtop is on, the power light and the battery light, it's both on. but the screen is still plain black. i don't know what's wrong with it, it's pretty new, i got it just last year. it won't work even with a battery cord connect to it. i tried closing the labtop by pushing down the power button for several seconds so the powerlight would turn off, than i turn it back on again. the powerlight turned on, but the screen is still black.

Here's the problem: Whenever I turn on my labtop and after couple seconds of using it, the screen suddenly turns blue and on the top says "beginning dump of physical memory" and then below it says "physical dump complete" then my labtop restarts. I think the cause of the problem was because I turned the labtop off by unplugging it [rather than doing the proper shut down] because it kept freezing. Any solutions to this problem? I know I didn't download any virus-infected programs because I have A LOt of anti-virus firewalls and the only things I put on the computer are: starcraft, msn messenger, and limewire. im ok with upgrading regular pc's, i've built a few, but i have a friend who asked me to take a look at his labtop, its a p3 forgot how fast, but he wants to upgrade the ram, he has 160mb, i guess i gotta find out how much it can hold.. he has about a gig left on the hard drive, not sure im gonna upgrade that, but if i do, i just wanna make sure its not rocket science... sorry i dont have the model number, and its a compaq...

should i be able to do it? yes or no?

A:labtop upgrades...

You can definetly add more RAM if it isn't maxed out (probably not, 160 is a weird number) and replacing the HD can be done too.

You can check all the hardware limitations from the Compaq website (if you know the model number of course).

My labtop is constantly shutting down on its own. Sometimes it shut down when I turn on the labtop after 5 seconds, sometimes it shut down in 20 minutes, and sometimes it just won't even turn on. I think its because it is overheating but I don't know what to do. Can anyone give me simple steps that can possibly solve this problem? I have a window XP labtop, bought about less than a year. If you need to know anything I can tell you... if my labtop doesn't shut down automaticly again. Thanks!

A:Toshiba Labtop

It's hard to imagine it overheating in 5 seconds. If it's still under warranty, I suggest contacting Toshiba, don't let the warranty run out before you let them take a crack at it.

One quick check, try a memory test, here's two to choose from.

More info needed:
When you try to load safe mode do any error messages come up before it shuts down?
I take it from your description that it gets past the POST test (or the Alienware logo) sucessfully?

Everytime it gets to the log in area it says "This copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can continue. You cannot log on until you activate windows" when i click yes it says its already activated and i click ok and nothing. please help

A:MY Labtop doesnt log in

Hello coolchiliboy

Try logging in in Safe Mode.
When boot up begins, start pressing F8 repeatedly until you see the Advanced Options page.
Select Safe Mode and try to boot all the way into XP there.
Post back what happens then.

Is your copy of XP genuine?
Have you actually activated it before?

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run ad-aware SE with VX2 add-on cleaner, Spybot Search & Destroy (with updated database) and CWShredder as these programs will clean a lot of the crap out first. All links to programs are in my signature. Ok..on to the log?..

Open My Computer>>View>>FolderOptions>>View Tab>>Advance Advanced settings box, under the "Hidden files" folder, select Show all files>>Apply>>OK
Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Open add/remove programs and remove VIEWPOINT and P2P if listed. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be but make sure)

C:\PROGRAM FILES\VIEWPOINT\VIEWPOINT MANAGER\VIEWMGR.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\P2P NETWORKING\P2P NETWORKING.EXE

I am having problems with my Dell Inspiron 2650 with Windows XP Home.
It just turns off randomly without warning, usually while I am playing Age of Mythology by Microsoft. It also kills itself while running McAfee VirusScan and Nero CD burning software. At one point it was doing it every 30 minutes or so. I finally ran enough of VirusScan to detect some viruses, which I promtly deleted, ran ad-aware, etc. It subsided temporarily, but now does it almost exclusively while playing AOM. It the game creating the problem? Or the cd-rom? I am lost on this one.

Why does my laptop heat up so fast??? the fan stays on continuously.

Do I have too many running processes?
I usually have around 45 running processes. Can someone help me to reduce the running processes? I dont know which ones i need!

Thanks..

A:Why Is My Labtop Fan Always Running?

You might open Task Manager to see if a single process is using 90-100% of your CPU. Right click an empty space on the task bar and select Task Manager. Select the Processes tab and scroll through the listed processes. If one is using all of the CPU power, the fan will run constantly, fast, and usually loudly.

I've had problems with AdobeUpdater and SymantecUpdater in the past...to the extent that I uninstalled Adobe Reader and Norton AntiVirus (Norton couldn't come up with a solution).

Let me know if this solves your problem or if you find the process that may be causing the problem.

I have a ASUS U36SG CI5 2.5 6GB/500 GT610M 13.3" W7HP labtop,

i have spilled a liquid substance on it 2 times, first its was icetea, cleaned it in disstiled water, worked fine after, second time around i spilled coffee, and thats when it went wrong.

afte i spilled the coffee, the labtop turned itself off. so i took out the AC, and battery. and left it to dry for a day or 2, then turned it back on, but it keept tuening on and shutting off. so i took the labtop apart, and cleaned the mobo, and other componants in distilled water, looks all new a shiny now . but when i tryed to tuen it on again, it loaded to the part where it asked, start windows nomaly, or repair. then i pressed one of them and it shut down and started to turn on and shut down after a few sec, and kept on doing this. reapeated this a few times, but the result dident change, so i tryed without battery, would not power up, just with the battery, would not power up. so i left the ac and battery in, and came to the start windows normaly or repair, took out the AC, and it could boot all the way. but as soon as i plug the AC back in it turns off.

So my big question is, what could or is this problem, and can it be solved without replaceing any major components.

Yours senserly!

The poor student!

And when I try to use a web browser it takes me to websites I did not click. My sister has tried to help me by removing my internet cache with CCleaner. And by running McAfee antivirus to check for viruses. The antivirus didn't find anything wrong. So she deleted some programs I wasn't using. My dad labtop is in pretty bad shape and it's hard enough just to get HJT or anything onto the computer, then running them properly is another story. It's an Accer, XP. Don't think you need anything. It's almost impossible to work with. There's about 3 anti-virus's on it. Not sure if there even real ones or false ones he downloaded from the virus.- Safe mode's not working, just gives a list of drivers and crap.- It's just constantly rebooting explorer I believe every couple a seconds. Lots of popups saying "Your computer is probably infected, click yes to download software to remove it."- Can't right click without the restarting effect- Could only manage an older version on HJT that doesn't need to be installed- I can't killbox the files from system32I can't even open notepad or open any folder.Any help would be greatly appreciated.Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS... i just bought a refurbushed labtop.and didnt have enough time to put the key in it,and now microsoft 7.will not let it stay on.

A:turn on my labtop

On a new installation you should have 30 days before Windows 7 gives you a hard time about entering the key and even then it should allow you to enter it.You just bought a refurbished laptop and it should have some sort of warranty, bring it back or contact where you purchased it from for help, there may be something wrong with it.If it is for some reason out of warranty, then try a Factory Restore but assume that anything you have saved on it and any programs you added will be gone. If there is anything important on the drive and you do not have access to save it, boot to a Live Linux DVD (Don't install) to access your hard drive to save your files to an external drive. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I have an HP envy 17 se nb pc. Turned the computer off at night and then turned it on in morning.
It asked for a windows password which I had disabled because I don't want to type it in all the time.
So I typed in the previous password and the screen said it was the wrong password. The computer then shut down by itself. I turned it back on and the screen is black and the caps lock button is giving me two blinks which means the bios needs updating. Went to the Microsoft site for bios update and all there instructions
will not work. Also the hard drive light blinks for about ten seconds an then goes off. I also think that the fan is not running and the computer gets very warm. I also removed the battery and the power plug and just plugged the power plug back in. This computer seems to be dead in the water. Can anyone help Thank you: Rodwell

A:Labtop Will Not Start

When I search for Envy 17 se nb, I get 68 results.
You'd get the BIOS from HP not Microsoft. The problem is that with 68 models, no one but you knows exactly which model you have and which drivers to link you to.

Ok, so I have been told for months now that I need to back up my labtop to cds incase of a computer crash or something. But a combination of being tight on money and being busy with my school work caused me to put it off until now. So I go to walmart, buy some cds, verify that those sort of cds are correct for backing up computer info and get started on the process. The first cd it takes less then 20 mins to completely back up as much as it will. So I switch out cds and the second one starts loading, that doesn't take very long for it to fill up either. But when I went to switch cds again I got a pop up message indicading that something had gone wrong and that the ending of the backing up on that cd and that I had to redue it again. So I started again and it didn't take long for the cd to get filled up again, at this point about 25% of my computer had been backed up. I then switched out cd's again, expecting that it wouldn't take long for this third cd to get filled up, maybe 20 min. at the most like the other cds. About 15 min later I checked on my computer and it showed that about 31% of my computer has now been backed up. That was 4 hours ago and it is still saying that only 31% is done. Should I be consurned? How can I speed this process up?

Your wire connection to the internet is disabled. Is this intentional? What else did you disable when disabling the connection?

4 of the last 5 memory dumps blame NETw5v64.sys (your wireless networking device driver). The other blames a Windows network driver that was likely crashed by your NETw5v64.sys driver.

This should be the link for your 64 bit wireless networking driver. Please download this one, uninstall the old one, and then install the new one.

It will NOT run Vista due to video drivers.

My laptop has ATI Radeon 9000 video, and there is much discussion on the internet regarding Vista drivers, but, according to the manufacturer there will never be an Vista drivers for this chipset.

I would really like to run W7 on this laptop though.

Any ideas?

as long as the Toshiba meets Windows 7 min. requirements, it'll run just fine. Sorry to say tho, there is no driver for the 9000 series you will get stuck using the standard VGA that windows installs. ATI doesnt support that series anymore :-(

Hello,    I recently purchased a new blue colored HP Notebook labtop from Best Buy and when I turned it on today, I heard ample static background noise. I know that I should only hear the computer fan/ motor running and not the extra noise. I spent nearly $500 on this thing and I'm wondering if I should take it back. To give a visual, it kind of reminds me of the old school AOL white noise of static from back in the day. Can someone please advise. :-/ Thanks, -AmberT Model # 15-ay015dxProduct # X7W77UA#ABA

Hi everyone!

While installing updates of windows, I was told that I shouldn't have turned off my computer. However, I had to turn it off because I saw that while installation of updates is about 32%, and in the 3/3 stage, that my computer was still 'shout down' without proceeding restarting my compute to finish the updates.
I had to shout down it by clicking on the turn off' button in the keyboard because it took too long time without doing anything.
Although I have been told to not turn off my computer or plug off until the updates are installed, I had to turn off it.
So my questions are:
Why did this happen(my compute was still showing me 'shout down' without doing anything.
Why were the updates completed, although I have been told to not turn off the computer while updating installing. But I didn't do?
Finally: why is not there restart' button on the keyboard to restart the compute if necessary.

A:My Labtop was still showing me 'shout down' without doing anything.

Just wait until the PC reboots and the Updates complete. If it takes more than a few hours then you can shut it down, if necessary run System Restore from System Recovery Options

Hello all first post and its a challenge, at least for me. Here is the deal...My bud purchased a labtop at one of those "liqidation sales'" a week ago and its a nice labtop, person who sold it was legit and it booted up and all was fine. It currently has w2k pro on it and I am going to put XP Pro on it. Here is the problems. BTW this is an IBM Thinkpad.

The machine only has a cd-rom bay and I tried to install xp pro via the cd-rom drive and no dice. Upon the boot I hit F12 to choose boot seqence and I choose cd-rom and it just goes to the w2k start up screen. My XP cd is a retail version.

So I then decided I would have to access the bios to make it boot by default to the cd-rom, well the bios are password protected. So no dice there also.

So I acutally went to do the install via w2k, I can log on as the username and the pass he was given for a "guest account" I load w2k and everything is fine, when I pop in the xp cd and choose install, it says I have to be an administrator to run this program. So I checked the accounts and I was able to screw around with a member of the admin group, I will use the name "John" as the account. "John" is a member of the admin group and has full control of the computer. I changed the password for "John" and was able to log on as him. However same thing, have to be an admin to run the install.

So I changed the password of the administrator and tried loggin back on as admin and got "... Read more
