Hello! I'm new here to these forums hoping to find a solution to this problem that has been bugging me for days and keeping me from setting up my computer.
Basically after several years, I am finally dealing with the loss of my Hard-Disk drive that came with my computer. I have bought a new Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ as a replacement, and I am having trouble setting it up. Here are a few Specs for my computer:
Compaq Presario SR1303WM
AMD Sempron 3000+
BIOS Revision 3.11
Mother Board: ASUS A7V8X-LA
It's a bit of an older computer. The HDD that failed me used the old ATA standard, and I am going from that to SATA II (3 Gb/s). My motherboard does have two SATA ports on it, but I don't think the motherboard supports 3 Gb/s transfer rate. Only 1.5 Gb/s. I have an SATA cable that connects directly from the HDD to the MoBo as well as a power converter that I use to connect power to the new HDD. I am using a jumper on the fifth and sixth pins ::[:]: <--- looks like that. The reason I am using a jumper is because I have read by other people that this puts the device into the 1.5 Gb/s mode, although I'm not entirely sure. The Samsung manual my HDD came with says that in order to put the drive into this mode, you must download and use their software from their site, www.samsung.com/hdd which I have tried and failed. When I run Samsung's software, I get the error: "Error reading from drive L: data area: drive not ready (A)bort, (R)etry, (F)ail?". I'm not sure why it does this, but again I'm not even sure if I need to use the software when I have the jumper... I must say with everything connected and with the jumper in place or not, my BIOS will not recognize my drive at ALL. I have tried using the IDE HDD Auto-Detection like the Samsung manual says to do with no effect. I have made sure Parallel Port and Serial Port A are enabled under I/O Device Configuration in the BIOS. It does give me certain options underneath that talking about a location or something like that...
I'd really appreciate if somebody could help me out here. If it matters, I'd like to put Windows 7 or XP on the drive. As far as I know all the cables are working fine. I can hear the HDD when I turn on the computer, but again it is not recognized.

Ok. Trying to fix a friend's computer, and seem to have run into a rather strange snag. Problem: The computer will not boot past the bios screen. Details: When you power on the computer, the compaq logo with intel inside shows up and has the <F1 Setup> and <F10 System Recovery> options listed as well. And this is about as far as the computer gets. After this the whole computer is just locked up, no buttons work on the keyboard no lights come on the keyboard ect ect. I've tried mashing on the F1 key as soon as I power on the computer and I can manage to get it to say *entering setup* but it still freezes after this point. I've already tried eliminating possible sources of problem, all expansion cards removed, HDD and Dvd Rom disconnected, single memory module (256mb ddr 2700), only power, vga, and keyboard connected. Ive also used the jumper on the motherboard to clear the cmos hoping that would solve the problem, to no avail. I've tried using a different stick of memory and different memory slot as well... Tried using both a ps2 and a usb keyboard... Ive even tried pulling out the jumper for the bios password protection (even though it didn't have a password on it, just trying anything I can think of). The installed bios version is 3.1, and that is about all I know about the computer at this point, other than what the website tells me of it. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/... Read more
Try clearing the CMOS again but this time remove the CMOS battery and hold the power button in for a few seconds. Then replace the battery and try booting up again. On the back of the pc is the PSU condition led green or flashing?10 more replies
I have a compaq presario. The bios are poop. Does anyone know if there is a way to update the bios with areal manufacturer? Or am I stuck with compaq's bios? It would be really nice if there was a way to find out who makes the bios for them and update it. Any info would be great. Thank you in advance!
You need to get the BIOS from Compaq. While the board maybe MADE by another company, who knows what slight changes to the specs were made.
When you do your next upgrade, build your own and get a real BIOS.
Like working on a NEW Dell PC, almost NO Options, no Temp monitors nothing.. junk... its a DELL!
Hey guys, I have a Pentium 2 Compaq Presario 233MHz system. I was wondering if ANYONE know's hot to get into this systems BIOS. I have been trying and trying but when I hit F10 at the beginning I just get into the COMPAQ diagnostics and setup, and it says nothing about BIOS. My plans are to overclock it to see how it works, just for hands on experience, if you have any tips on that you could help me out with that also. Thanks for your guys help and I hope someone can help me. email me at [email protected] OR send me an AOL instant message at Daws202 which is my screen name. Thanks people!
Just went threw the same missery
There is a pass word to the BIOS and you need to take out the motherboard battery to erase it. Leave it out for 5 secs, unplug the computer and turn it on unpluged to drain all the power out of it. then reinstall the battery and reboot.
You m,ay have to remove some of the perifs CD burner, JS Ect if it dosent work the first time to drain the power out of everything
Yes it sucks.
Does anyone know how to get into the bios on a Compaq presario with a model number of 5340 ?? I have tried pressing delete key.. no affect, tried pressing
F1, F2, and escape, (one at a time) but the bios don't want to open up..
It shows nothing on the screen but the COMPAQ logo when started up. Then goes imediately to the windows 98 logo, then opens up windows 98.. It works ok, but I need to get into the bios to check some settings.

I erased the bios on a Compaq Presario 5340. Now I need to find a bios for it again. Compaq's site is no help at all.
Does anyone know where I could find one?
(my problem is that it will not boot to the HD. it will only go to the floppy disk with a program called KillDisk on it. i connected the HDs to a different computer and it worked fine without the floppy and booted to the OS. and yes the HD is first for boot order.)

I have a Compaq Presario 2200 model laptop.
I have an issue where every time by laptop batter discharges the time clock resets. I believe that this is realated to the bios battery. I have taken the laptop appart properly via guide provided on compaq website. This is the maintenance guide with all the spare part numbers listed. However, this laptop is out of warranty.
My problem is that I cannot locate the bios battery anywhere on the board. Could someone with some experience pleae review the diagram for this model and tell me where the battery is?
First of all.
Have you tried to calibrate the battery by BIOS? < This might help a lot of problems.
Have you updated your BIOS ?

I was working on a customer's laptop, a Compaq CQ60, that refused to boot into windows and System Recovery disabled all recovery options except for Command Prompt.
On a hunch, after pressing Escape during BIOS boot, I selected HDD Test. The test ran and failed with "Replace Hard Drive." OK.. the laptop sat there for a few minutes and never did anything else, so I tried to get out of that screen. Nothing responded, so I just held the Power button to turn the computer off.
When I pressed Power again to turn the computer back on, the Power and Wireless LEDs comes on, the CD drive is accessed and then the HDD LED lights up for a second and goes out. The screen never comes up nor do the backlights.
I have tried hooking up an external monitor, but that never shows anything either.
I have tried taking the memory out, cleaning the contacts, putting them back in, swapping the modules around, booting with one or the other.... No effect.
I pulled the battery and the CMOS battery, unplugged AC and let it sit for a good half hour. I held the Power button for thirty seconds. Plugged the CMOS battery back in then the AC. Turned it on and still no go.
I cannot figure out WHAT could have happened!? Any other ideas? Thanks...

hey i recently got a compaq presario v6000 from a friend and when i turned it on for the first time i noticed that it made 3 short beeping sounds which i found out that it doesnt have a bios image but anyway the power light a battery light flashes and then reboots but i cant see anything on the screen at all when its powered on. also the fans power on for at least 2 seconds then they turn off. i dont have a hard drive but i need to at least get to the bios so i can reinstall the os using usb drive.
any help would be great and aslo people have been telling me that my motherboard could be warped how would i fix this without buying a new one because i have no money at all for the laptop.
It looks like you may have Bad Ram: Compaq BIOS Beep Codes - BIOS Central.
Computer Does Not Start and Emits an LED or Beep Code Compaq Presario SR5510F Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English) Or it could be the Video adapter on the motherboard. Try removing one stick of RAM and get to the Bios. You can also download the ISO image for Memtest in my signature burn the image to CD with IMGBurn also in my signature or USB and boot off of the disc and run the tests on each stick of RAM separately.
NOTE: THIS IS A COPY OF MY POST ON THE COMPAQ FORUM...getting desperate.
Hi, i bought a 6150b from a company auction. Everything worked perfect for the longest time. Then last week i went to go turn it on, and all it does is run the CPU fan for a couple seconds, flash the AC LED about 7 - 8 times, and while thats flashing the power and hard drive LED’s stay solidly lit. Then it completely turns off. This all lasts about 3 seconds at the most. That’s what happens when on battery power.
When on AC power, the same thing happens, except it continues doing the cycle over and over again until I unplug it.
I think it might have something to do with the LCD monitor, since it does not even show a slight flicker at all. No color change like it would from when turned off to a black back lit screen when turning on….simply nothing.
I opened her up (no warranty anyways) and checked all the connections for the keyboard, monitor, DVD drive etc....also reseated them as well, with no luck.
Pulled the both RAM modules and reseated them as well, nothing.
Pulled the battery as well, no change. Still cycles the same over and over again while on AC
There are no audible errors codes (real nice HP...), and im lost at this point.
Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.
I think instead of just pulling and replacing the CMOS battery you might purchase a new one and install it. Proceed from there. If you get a screen and it's still has a problem try a new PSU. Jazz
Hello all great website!
Compaq Presario 7000 series (model #7QSM11) using Windows ME, AMD 1332 mhz processor. My sister's computer. Hard drive was a 60GB, but it died. So I bought a new hard drive actually tried a 160GB first but thought the 137GB issue was the problem so now I am trying a 120GB western digital Caviar.
I found and successfully flashed the latest bios. (ROM date 3/28/02-786K2 Family). I checked the bios and it does see all 120GB. But when I goto partition it, I run into problems. Three methods tried: I tried to use Western Digitals included CD-ROM, even created the DOS boot floppy that they recommended on another system. Doesn't work keeps coming up with an error that something like A:\Auto???.exe not found. I checked the floppy that file is there?? Comes up whether I am booting from the floppy or from the CD-ROM.
So I tried fdisk from a Windows ME boot disk. Fdisk will only find/or report 24GB. I cleared the partition and tried using the Compaq restore disks but they came up with the same problem.
Am I right in thinking that this is a Windows ME issue?
Can you tell me how to fix this problem?
My computer is a Dell 8100, also running Windows ME but with a Intel P4, I installed a 200GB hard drive and had to flash the bios, and then I am not sure if it was Maxtor's DDO dynamic disk overlay or Intel's application accelerator, or the Flashed Bios, but Windows ME sees the whole hard drive.

My computer crashed yesterday. I think thats the term for it. Its running windows xp. Well, I shut it off at night, and when I tried to turn it on in the morning, the computer came on , the fan started spinning, lights came on, but the hard drive kept making clicking noises. So, I hurriedly took out the hard drive, and retrieved my data from the hard drive through that IDE-USB adapter. So, at least that was safe now
I think the disk is bad, and I need to replace it. However I dont really want to pay for a whole new operating system. Is there a way to transfer the operating system from the old drive to the new drive with its activation status, so that I dont start gettting those pesky activation notices?
You can use disk imaging software, such as Macrium Reflect FREE Edition, to clone the old hard disk to a new one. Once the new cloned disk has been installed, you will be asked to restart your system after you first boot it, so that Windows can reconfigure for the hardware change. You will not need to reactivate Windows if you do this.
One thing to watch out for is that if the new disk is a different size to the old one and you have more than one partition on the disk, the software may dynamically resize the partitions and if you have diagnostics and/or recovery partitions you might want to keep the size of those the same as on the old disk.

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)
If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.
However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.
i dont know anything about computers so i will need a detailed explanation and i need to know how to fix it!! it just stays on the compaq screen
Before the problem started was anything added to or installed on the system?
Try booting to Last Known Good or Safe Mode.
Restart the computer during the boot process repeatedly tap "F8" you should get
the Advanced Options.
Let us know if able to get the system to boot with either option.

I friend of mine purchased this Presario in 2004. She hasn't had internet since about 2006, so she hasn't had any of the updates since then. I brought her tower home with me since I have internet to load her updates. We're trying to get it internet ready. When I brought it home last week nothing would open. So yesterday she gave me the system recovery disc. I started with the Standard Recovery, but there were too many files that it couldn't recover. So I then decided to do a full recovery. After the full recovery it was rebooting and it told me that not all the system could reload and I couldn't hit okaybecause it wouldn't read / acknowledge my mouse. So, I unhooked her computer and rehooked mine to see what her alternatives were. I found a website, they wanted to know all the things it wouldn't oload. All I can remember is that it was things that could me downloaded later like: Norton, AOL, Adobe, MSN, and QuickTime.
So, I unhoked mine and rehooked her's up (and booted up my laptop). When her's came back up it's saying: NTLDR is missing Pres Control + Alt +Delete to Restart
My question for you is there anyway I can save her conputer? She doesn't have a lot of funds, being a singe mother of a 7 yr old and I'm just a good friend trying to help her out.
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide
I decided to see what happened when I ctrl alt delete and then decided to do another recovery. Here's some more info (could not recover errors):
1. C:\WINDOWS\Help\SB\Training\WXPPer\Content\Wave\[email protected]
9. (Black screen instead of error message)
then all of after about 20% a big blue screen with following:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. IF this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure new hardware or software is properly installed.
If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced startup... Read more
ok I hace a compaq that is all messed up. lets see one day the monitor would not work after a storm. Bought another, For a while the screen would be blue but change back to normal. The pc also would have a hard time starting up after it was in idle. We would do a hard start and for a while that worked. Now when I try to start it it turns on but the monitor says no vga/dvi input. There is also none of the preverable beeps that are supposed to be there so in short (well long)the motherboard is fried? So do I use it as a planter in the yard or is there a way to get it up and running. It runs on XP media center it has a micro ATX form factor motherboard it is also an AMD 64 Anthlon. ram is 256 mb 1Rx16 pc 4200 ddr2 533 mhz. With all that said can I just replace the motherboard and reinstall the reinstallation disks and be up and running? ( if it could only be so easy) What about the cpu. i know many questions here thanks for patients. Please help me. Tina
does your system have agp or pciex (or even pci) slot free? Is the graphics on board? It sounds like a graphics card problem, even if it is onboard. I'd try a replacement card (even if it's just a pci card) and see what happens...
How do you access the Bios on a Compac Presario 4110. I keep getting the message 162 Sytems Options not set. 163 Time and Date not set. Having visited Compac they were not a lot of help. Downloading the software recommeded by them was a waste of time, still got the above message. Tried all the usual keystrokes etc no good. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have purchased a Compaq Presario 600 with an Athlon XP 2200+ processor. I do not have a copy of Windows XP to wipe it with. Is there any way with the installed XP that I can refresh this system and remove data frome previous owners? Or Can I load Win 98?
Compaqs usually have a hidden partition with all the factory loaded software on it in an image format. As long as it does and you can figure out how to access it you could probable do that - but you almost likely need the XP Product key and may need to reactivate XP after the recovery. XP can only be install on one machine at a time - so if they are still using it you are out of luck.
Watch the boot up for any recovery messages or take a trip to www.Compaq.com and look up the info for your make/model.

I've been trying to figure this out on my own for about 4 years but I GIVE UP!!!
4 yrs ago I was doing a reformat from my OS CDs and the process got to a certain point (and I don't remember exactly where, sorry)and it just stopped formatting the OS. There are several software programs that came with my laptop that I WAS running before the reformat that never got formatted. One of them was MS Works and also MS Money and Cds have not been recognized since. Maybe all of the optical drive files/registry keys didn't install and I'm missing files/registry keys??????
I don't know if any of the following information will help and/or save time but these are just some of the things I've tried/come across in the last 4 years.
1. This is what happens after I insert a CD: after I hear it whirring, I go to the D:\ screen from MY Computer and click on the File button, there is not an option in that list that pops up for PLAY like there was befor the reformatt. There is only an option to "Write the Files to CD"....
Well, that wasn't what I was trying to do but clicked on it anyway and it tells me to insert disk. There is already one in there whirring !!
2. After inserting a music CD I've even gone to Start\Run and entered D:\
While the CD is whirring a small CD-looking icon will periodically flash but nothing ever happens. Just whirring. Like it connects but is missing a file/registry entry that makes it actually PLAY. Maybe?????

Hi, and welcome to TSF!
It might be a failing optical drive. How many different CDs have you tried? Does it burn CDs successfully?
Hi, i'm having a problem turning on my laptop. I'm using a Compaq Presario C502US. I've been using the AC adapter that came with the laptop but eventually the AC adapter became loose and broke. The charging icon (lightning symbol) wouldn't turn on anymore and I think the laptop has now run out of power. I've finally received a new adapter and when i plug it in the charging icon lights up. However the laptop still won't turn on. I've waited for about 2 hours but it still won't turn on. When i click the power button, the Power turns on and then it blinks. The Fan turns on for about 3 seconds but then it goes off and the power light blinks and the monitor won't turn on. Can anyone help me with this problem?
Remove battery and power adaptor (ie all power out)
Hold down the ON button (to disperse all internal power)
Plug the power adaptor back in only (and to wall socket!)
If it works, turn back off, and re-install battery, turn On
Okay. At work I have 2 Compaq Presario PC's. One is model SR1010NX and the other is S5010NX. They're fairly old. I have a Ubuntu 10.04 server set up that acts as my DHCP/TFTP/Samba server for booting with PXE, then installing the selected system and my custom application suite using only literally 2 minutes of my time to type in such details as the CD Key, Computer Name, etc.
So anyway, back to my Presario problems. Both computer conveniently do not have a Network Boot ROM (for example nVidia Boot Agent). So if I try to boot from network, Ill get a "Disc Failure". The S5010NX will not boot with a USB drive plugged-in period. It will get stuck on the red "Compaq" screen. If I unplug the device, it boots into BIOS/OS perfectly fine. If Im in the BIOS, and I plug the device in, the BIOS turns non-responsive, when I remove it, it starts responding again. Weird.
Here the 2nd chat session I've had with HP Professional Support (or whatever it's called). All I have to say is, I knew more about computers when I was 12 then these guys do.

Have a Compaq Presario 1020 - laptop. Info is as follows -
Need a maintenance manual. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
I've searched this site, I've asked HP/Compaq, and I've checked search engines but still don't have an answer, so wondering if I can find it here.
I have a Compaq Presario 700 with what I believe is a dead hard drive. I want to replace it, but not sure if it is necessary to copy the files from the drive first. I don't think it's possible, as the drive doesn't seem to work at all. Can I replace it with a new (upgraded) hard drive and just run the original Windows QuickRestore discs, or is there something more to it that I would need?
Here's what happens: I switch the laptop on and it wants to start up, but then, before Windows is running, the hard drive begins it's lovely scraping and clunking noises and I eventually get a black screen with plain text saying windows had to shut down... and is beginning dump of physical memory. Of course, this all started after some fool (maybe me, maybe not) dropped the laptop.
Every site I've checked says I'll need to create a backup of all files before replacing the hard drive. I didn't have anything on there that I need to save, so am wondering if I can just run the QuickRestore and get back to business as usual.
Welcome to the TSG forum.
Which Compaq Laptop ???
Have you backed up all your personal Data ??
Yes .. just put in a new HD .. and run the recovery CD/DVDs
This'll put it back to the way you bought it .. assuming no other problems.
I have an older compaq presario 5000 (5wv260), i want to upgrade the memory in it. I know it takes sdram, 168 pin, but i dont know if i need parity or non-parity. OR ecc or non-ecc... anyone know what this computer takes?

Hey everyone I am having the same problem again as I was having before with my Compaq Presario 5000. It seems to just freeze up when I am on it or not. Sometimes I try to move the mouse to get back into Windows from the screen saver and it does nothing. At all! And sometimes in the middle of surfing the web and listening to music it just freezes up again and I have to hit the power button just to get it back up and running. Can anyone help out with this? I was asked to run MemTest before but I have no idea how to do this, so could someone help out? Also, since I am not a complete newbie, but darn close when it comes to the whole hardware side of computing, how can I tell what is causing interference with what when it comes to the hardware I am running and wether or not the latest drivers are installed? Thanks again and hope to get this resolved quickly.

I'm making some changes to a compaq presario 4660 (dinosaur) and it's running windows 98. I cannot get into bios. F2, F1, delete and Tab do not get me in. I searched on google and really didn't receive good results. Well it did say that F2 would get me in, but it does not. Seemed to me there was another way to get into bios?

I have a Compaq Presario 1200 laptop that won't come out of hibernation. With either the battery or A/C cable the power on light on the keyboard will come on after the power switch is pressed and a couple of seconds of clicks from the vicinity of the 3 1/2 floppy or the hard drive area but nothing else - no beeps or anything on the screen.
I talked to Tech support (I am out of warranty) and tried their suggestions - removing all power and pressing the power button and then reinserting the battery; turning it off, removing power for 24 hours and then turning it back on.
One suggestion I had from another source was to remove the CMOS battery but I can not figure out how to access that part of the case. I can get to the hard drive but not the battery.
Any suggestions or directions on removing the CMOS battery?

Not too sure what you need help with.
Do you mean the sound does not work since upgrading to Windows 7?
This is because the existing audio driver is not compatible with Windows 7, and unfortunately HP/Compaq do not have any Windows 7 drivers for the Presario V3417LA. The Windows Vista driver might work. You can download it from here:
Click the 'plus' symbol next to "Driver - Audio", then click "Connexant high-defintion audio driver".
If this driver does not work you will have to use Google Search to try and find one that does.
You really should have checked what drivers were available from the Compaq website before upgrading to Windows 7.
Some older laptops are just not suitable for upgrading to Windows 7 because of possible driver issues.
I have the best luck with computers ever. My brother wanted me to format his oldschool compaq presario 5000 computer so I formatted with the win XP setup disk, when I went to restart to start installing windows after the format it takes me to a blank screen that reads:
"Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) NTLDR: couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)"
I have booted with floppy and fdisk, fdisk /mbr, formatted about a million times using FAT and NTFS file systems, I have deleted all partitions, did everythinig I can think of.
Does anyone have any idea of how I might solve this and install windows? I know the HDD isn't shot because I can put it in my other comp and actually do a full win install, but when I place it back in the compaq, it brings me to the same error screen.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.
one more thing, I am kinda a n00b at this sorta stuff so any ideas please give me the *hold my hand* explination and guide me what to do with step by step instructions, thanks again guys!
Check in your BIOS and make sure you have the right HDD displayed. It would be best to set it to auto. Also you could try setting the BIOS back to the default values.3 more replies
A friend has a Presario X1300. It has a small problem. The power button only works once in a while (perhaps 1 in 20 presses). I thought perhaps it was a cold solder joint but even after touching up the button's pads its still has the problem.
It could be a bad switch, it looked like the switch had previously been replaced (although he hasn't had it serviced except to put in a new hard drive about a month before the switch went bad).
I found a post that indicated that someone found schematics for the motherboard and I was hoping that someone here would be able to point me in the right direction. I didn't find them on google. I'm going to replace the switch first, but if that doesn't work I have to assume there's some other problem that will need debugged.
I hate to see such a nice laptop go to waste because of a stupid power on problem.
I have found the service manual online. Its great, but has no schematics.
Thanks for any ideas you can offer.
Installed with Vista Premium, i've realised that it has a Recovery Partition and im not sure how to use it. my computer came with a windows vista disc, but im trying to recover Vista and im not sure how to do it. maybe someone can give me a heads up on how to do it.
My compaq was working fine until one day it just went off during a user session. Pushing the power button made it try to start but when it began to load windows 98 it quit again. After serveral retries it finally started up again. It ran OK for about one week , then just went off again. This was during a user session.(user session meaning it was in use at the time). I tried to restart it but it would not restart. Finally it tried to start, then said press F2, then the video went out. Nosthing shows up on the screen now. When powered on you can hear the hard drive start up but that's about it. The three year warantee lapsed about a year ago . I was wondering whether or not this has something to do with the cmos battery. Apparently several people I know who purchased a Compaq laptop have run into the same problem. I have a friend who owns an IBM thinkpad which has done precisely the same thing. Any suggestions.
It is possible for the cmos battery to cause similiar problems, but from what you are saying it looks like a processor problem. For the system to just shut off in the middle of being used and unable to start up again, shows the possibility that the processor has overheated and the machine has powered off, however because the machine is still too hot it wouldnt fully start up again.
To say that your video has then gone, could mean the processor is completely knackered, signs of life can still be seen from the machine but nothing will appear on the screen, in most cases the monitor will stay on standby even when the machine is powered on.
I suggest a new processor, with new heatsinc and fan.
I have a f560US AMD Sempron 3500+ 2.8 GHz 1.5 GB Ram 32 bit and I am trying to boot to Linux from a USB thumb drive. I installed Ubuntu using Unetbootin on my 8 GB stick but I can't seem to make this laptop boot from the USB. I've gone into the bios and tried but have failed. Help me, please.
Does your laptop allow booting from USB? Did you see the USB flash drive listed in the boot order screen?
I have a problem with my laptop screen. The screen is dark, however, the data is still there. Can't turn lamp on, or change anything, but can hook up to a monitor and it works. Can I fix the screen to work again? If I hit the button that turns the screen off and closes the computer down, the picture pops up for a few seconds and it is slightly red.
Its most likely that the backlight has failed. It can be fixes but it costs a upwards of $100 to do by a professional. You could try buying the parts online and doing it yourself though if you are technically inclined.

Hello! I am attempting to change a 80mm fan in my Compaq computer. The fan I want to change is, I believe, called the CPU fan. It has a lever next to it and 4 screws holding it down. My question is this: Do I have to move the lever on the side of the fan in order to pull the fan up and proceed to remove the screws or do I just remove the 4 screws? Also, how do I remove the screws considering the awkward position they are in? (I've been working on trying to remove the screws; however, it is difficult to maneuver the screwdriver into the top of the screws to remove them. This is because part of the fan case is above the screws making it necessary to place the screwdriver sideways in order to remove the screws.) Thank you for your response.More replies
I just bought and set up a new computer system, and am now trying to get my old one to boot, so that I can migrate the files needed for the new system. The monitor doesn't come on, and all I'm getting is a fast blinking green light on the tower. I've un/replugged all cables and power cords, and I know the monitor is OK because it belongs to my husband's matching computer, but my old one won't boot.
I'm desperate, guys! Is there any other information I can give you to help resolve my problem? I have the Easy Transfer Cable for Vista all ready to go (and the software loaded in the old computer before I disconnected it and moved it to the card table), but I can't get my Compaq to boot.
If you can't help me, I guess I'll take it to Best Buy tomorrow and let the Geek Squad have at it...
I hit the power button this morning and nothing happened. Tried unplugging and holding power button in and still nothing.
Please post your system specs, exact model Presario, include any upgrades or modifications please.
If any here has an HP Pavilion or Compaq Presario PC or Notebook (current models), they will notice that the fan kicks in when needed. The fan doesn't really annoy me as much on my Compaq laptop, but on my HP desktop it is really annoying and loud. I think it forgot that it was only supposed to come on when needed because it is now on almost all the time. Can someone explain to me how this fan works in more detail and how I can possibly adjust when it comes on or at least the fan speed, SOMETHING!!! Thanx in advance.
If the fan kicks in more then it used to it might mean that the computer needs a cleaning. These fans are temperature controlled and only kick in when a sensor detects the temperature to be at a certain level. Sone fans need to be on at all times - like the one on the CPU - but it may be possible to control it speed with software or BIOS settings.
Speedfan comes to mind, do a google search for it. It will list the motherboard temps and allow fan speed adjustment if the board supports it. If you have a case fan you can control its speed, as for the CPU fan - thats best left on a full speed.
First, open up the case and see if it needs a cleaning. You can also replace stock fans with quieter ones if they are too loud or wearing out.
Recently took some hits on my Compaq Presario 7478 system. Got two or three nasties via the 'Net. After McAfee's virus scan and removal, began experiencing weird happenings, such as system closing down and restarting. Then just not starting. Tried a few remedies [probably inadvisedly], and finally the system seemed to hang on my restore at the same place repeatedly.
Ultimately the system could no longer establish my OS. Restore failed.
Bottom line: Could not invoke computer restore. Could do nothing with this computer.
Q... Being compaq is the BIOS set to a certain condition that would prevent my reformatting the hard drive and restablishing an OS? Is this an option I can override? If I were to piggy-back the existing hard drive onto an operating hard-drive and reformat would that solve this problem and permit me to then create or repair the hard drive subsequently to get my compaq back?
Sorry this is so wordy...
Have you tried disabling System Restore; then re-enable for a fresh start?
Failing that, format and install OS per instructions in your manual or the CD which came with your computer. If no CD, the OS should be installed in .cab files in Windows Explorer.
The BIOS should already be properly set
I am upgrading a Compaq Presario 5000 model #5WB220 with a very low 15 GB hard drive for a friend. It currently has Windows ME and there is no Compaq Restore CD.
I have increased the memory to 320 by adding an additional 256 MB RAM.
I am wanting to totally replace the 15GB hard drive with an 80 GB hard drive and load Windows XP Home.
The problem I am finding out is that Compaq has propriertory info on a partition within the existing drive. From what I understand without the Restore CD, I can't put the new drive in.
I'm wondering if there are any other alternatives to doing this.
Can I install XP on the existing drive and then transfer all the data (to include the compaq proprietory info) to the new drive in a slave position?
