Solved: Compaq Presario c700: Unable to see wireless card in device manager

Q: Solved: Compaq Presario c700: Unable to see wireless card in device manager

I recently removed Win Vista from my Presario c700 and installed Win XP Pro. Now I cannot see the wireless card in the Device Manager. There are bunch of "yellowed" devices including one called unknown device. Of course, I cannot access the internet or my other computers from the laptop. However, if I hardwire the laptop to the router, it works fine.
I have Dlink wireless router and two PCs hardwired to it. My roommate has a laptop and it works fine with the wireless network. Any suggestions to fix my problems.

Thanks people.

I have a Compaq Presario Notebook computer with a 137GB hard-drive. I would like to install a larger hard-drive in the computer, 500GB or larger. Does anyone know the best way to do this? Also, I was told that I need to put the operating system, Vista Home Premium, on the new hard-drive once I install it. If this is true, how can I make a copy of the operating system on a CD or thumb-drive? Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

I'm working on my friend's Compaq Presario 1930 laptop, an oldie with Win98SE. I had him buy this wireless card, but I can't install the drivers. According to the info with the card, it needs a minimum CPU of 500 Mhz and 128 MB RAM. The laptop only has around 300 Mhz CPU capability and 64 MB RAM.

So I'm hoping someone here has experience with older laptops and can recommend a card that will work with minimal resources.

Thanks in advance!

Dear Friends,

Hope all is well.

What is the exact replacement model and number AC Adapter for an Compaq Presario HP C700 notebook? There seems to be a larger and smaller pin configuration for this model.
From the Start>computer>right click> properties> it states the notebook as a Compaq Presario HP C700.
Specs on the bottom:
s/n:[personal informatioin removed]
p/n: KC590UA#ABA
Service tag also lists C751NR

Also, the AC adapter is either "flaky"/defective or the input on the Notebook is "flaky?" This must of been a known issue with this model due to the tiny pin size. I've owned numnerous other HP notebooks and this is the only model that has had this "flaky" adapter issue.
The issue is when you plug the adapter in sometimes it connects and the blue indicator light comes on..and sometimes if you happen to move the notebook from one place to another the light/connection is not solid. I'm assuming its the connector on the adapter and not the input in the notebook.

Any help or suggestions appreciated along with the "correct" AC adapter replacement number for this specific notebook. A source would be nice also outside of HP as an option.

Sincerely, Raphael

Hello I am having issues with my Compaq Presario C700 Laptop. During use (and no specific use either). It will randomly freeze up for about a minute, screen will go blank, when it comes back on (15 seconds later) the screens resolution is set to 640x480, with 16 bit color. Can't change the display settings. Checked the drivers and the monitor shows up with the proper installed drivers. Chipset drivers are still installed correctly, VGA drivers installed correctly. Nothing looks out of the ordinary.

Hiya

The screen on my Compaq Presario C700 has gone green and fractally. It looks a bit like its eaten someones' acid. Not ideal, and is a bit migraine inducing...

It comes back to life if I tilt the screen right back, which says to me its a loose connection somewhere. Its not the motherboard, as I have checked it on an external monitor and is fine...

BUT

I have disassembled and re-assembled and its still the same, and now have a query...

Behind the screen, along with the ZIF connector that connects at the top , there is a tiny white plug on a silver cable that isnt connected to anything, and I cannot see anywhere it should live. Is this for a camera maybe, or is this maybe my problem?

Please, any advise would be massively appreciated. The disassembly manual on HPs website was completely useless, it appears to be for a different model than the one I asked for...

I look forward to your reply

Andy

Only thing which doesnt cope with it is graphics card. Besides that all is fine, infact it is running more cooler than before. Thankyou for your advise

I've been having several problems with this laptop recently. Firstly, its a Compaq Presario C700 with Windows Vista on it and 1gb of RAM. My first issue was with the DVD/CD room drive (which I still can't get fixed). Then, I restored the computer back to it's factory settings because the person my friend who owned this computer before me had a lot of adware and malware junk on it. After that, I was still having an issue with the D drive. For some reason, it was full but the computer was restored to factory settings. So, therefore, I decided to just reformat the drive because I figured that it was causing problems with the computer's performance. However, the computer still had performance problems such as the Windows Aveo Aero theme wouldn't load properly. That was all fine and dandy. As long as the computer was still running. I would get it all fixed as soon as I got the time and money. Now, all of a sudden, I can't even get the computer past the startup "Compaq" loading screen. This all happened today when firefox all of a sudden updated itself (which was weird to me) then when it loaded again a screen popped up asked me to download or cancel "system.exe". Before doing so, I researched and saw several claims up it being a virus. However, the every time I kept clicking cancel, it kept popping up. So I finally pressed "install" which was probably dumb. 5 minutes later the computer shutdown firefox again and all this windows kept popping up (whic... Read more

Boot into the BIOS (F10 at Compaq logo) and check to see if the hard drive is recognized.

While in the System Setup menu check the boot options and make sure hard drive is selected before Network boot.

You may have a failed hard drive that is not being detected in the boot order.

Hi, I read through the posting and did not see a definitive answer for why my laptop boots to six screens. I am a missionary teacher in Roatan, Honduras and I took it to a tech shop who said it was the inverter but he did not test it and the color/brightness looks fine. I don't want to spend money on an inverter unless it is the problem.

Is there a solution? I tried safe mode on Vista but could not get to the screens indicated. Please help if you know a solution!

Hi,

I turned on my laptop this morning to find that the touch pad doesn't work. This wasn't really a problem as I generally use a plug-in mouse, however, upon restarting my computer again, my keyboard also doesn't work.

I'm running Vista 32 bit and I have no idea what to do.

Does this sound like a software problem or a hardware problem? Is it possible that I have a virus that is causing this?

Would my best solution be to re-install Vista?

I have everything backed up so I don't mind doing that, however, I don't know how. When I bought my laptop Vista was pre-installed so I don't have the CD.

I'd be very appreciative to any help you guys could offer!

I have a Compaq Presario C700 which is giving me the following error:
No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key.

I'm a technical user and have been able to fix just about anything, until now. I've done some research, and I've found that this Compaq C700 is a terrible computer that just can't be fixed. They're probably right.

I've tried to boot off an external optical drive, but this failed to load the system. I've checked the boot order is correct and that the optical drive was enabled in the BIOS, but this still did not allow me to boot from the optical drive. I knew that it recognized a system there because it had an underscore, which meant it was trying to boot from the disk, but sadly, no luck.

As for the hard drive, I've replaced it with a spare, couldn't install Win7 on it directly from the laptop, so I installed it on my desktop system, then put it back in. Still, the message. No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key.

I've verified every available BIOS setting to the last detail. The only thing I could think of and haven't yet tried is to try to see if there's a CMOS battery anywhere and disconnect that, but I'm not sure where that could be on a laptop, and taking this thing apart is practically impossible.

I know the CPU and system board and everything else seems to be in working order, it's just that it can't seem to work off of a Windows 7 disc or installation. A red flag for me was when I went into the BIOS (InsydeH20)... Read more

Good morning

I dont know if anyone can help. I have recently upgraded my Compaq C700 from Vista Home Basic to Vista Business due to several issues with slow processing speed and issues with booting. Vista Businesss seems to be working fine and a vast improvement, however, unfortunately the wireless connection no longer works.

The button on the keyboard remains orange. I have looked under device manager and under networks it is showing two unknown devices. On wireless network search, it is showing on broadband LAN connections and no wireless options. If I click on wireless options, I get the message that the wireless adapter is not installed and configured.

I have downloaded a programme called Driver Robot which claims to note that the wireless adapter is missing and provides the driver. However, this does not seem to install on download.

Any assistance much appreciated.

I like to use a wireless mouse with my new laptop occasionally. Whenever I unplug usb adapter and replug, the laptop wants to install the drivers. I take the adapter out sometimes so it doesn't get broken off with a stupid move - if it's not possible to synchronize, I'll just have to live with the installation of drivers all the time. My 2nd question is - is that ok to do?

A:Solved: Synchronize wireless mouse to compaq presario

I use a Microsoft Mobile Mouse 6000, which has a reciever that only protrudes from the side of my laptop about 1/4". This is used on a Dell Ispiron 1525. When I do unplug it and plug it back in it activates the driver. But this is not detrimental to the system at all. I do not like using touch pads so I normally leave this reciever plugged in all the time even when I bag my laptop up for transport.

I just finished a re-install of XP on a Compaq Presario 2100 Laptop, Now I have no wireless access capabilities what so ever.. I don't even see a switch to turn the antenna on.. And there is no wireless card to enable via the GUI in network connections. The LAN card works fine. And They said it did have wireless access before I did the re-install. I have a feeling I am making a simple mistake, Such as turning the antenna on, via a control / F? button, However I do not see any antenna logo's, switches or lights of any kind.. As always appreciate your input..

I am troubleshooting a Sony Vaio running XP on which the wireless network card was accidentally deleted. I have successfully regained wireless connection via a Belkin USB wireless adaptor, but how can I get the wireless NIC card to work again? It doesn't appear in Device Manager (see attached screen shot). Would it help to uninstall and reinstall the card? Thanks for any advice.

Hello folks.

In Windows Home Premium 64bit we encounter this problem on a machine after trying to uninstall a norton product manually.

The norton software led to serious problems of randomly emerging BSODs.

As system uninstall did not work we researched a tutorial on how to manually uninstall the soft.

It can be found here:

Enterprise Support - Symantec Corp. - How to manually uninstall the Symantec Endpoint Protection client from Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 2008 R2 64-bit

Everything worked smoothly until the last three steps of the routine failed (12.-14.):

We can not uninstall/delete the wireless network adapters as described. After clicking "uninstall" there is the window that asks for confirmation (to uninstall) but after clicking "yes" the device manager window simply refreshes - and the device remains unchanged.

Disabling the affected devices does not help either since we get a "limited connectivity" error when trying to connect to our router.

Any help would be highly appreciated!

Thanks so much.

Jordan

A:Unable to uninstall wireless network adapters from device manager.

Wow, Norton is such a mess. I can never recommend anyone use their crappy software.

Try manually uninstalling the driver with the following steps:
Click the Start Orb, and in the search type "view net connections" and hit enter.
Find the wireless adapter you need to remove and right click it and click Properties.
Click the Driver tab.
Click the Uninstall button

Let me know if that works.

I uninstalled my wireless adapter due to a very minor problem (which I wish I had ignored).  Now when I try to reinstall I get a "Data is Invalid" error.  Also, the program claims it cannot see the hardware, but Windows definitely does see it.

I also noticed that my Device Manager now comes up blank.  It show absolutely no devices.

Please help.  I am using Windows Vista (32 bit).

You should run a SFC /scannow in windows command prompt. Make sure you run it as administrator.

The wireless assistant says it is disabled in the devise manager but when I go there I don't see the wireless card. Is it called something funny that I just don't recognize or is there a way to make it show up?

I have an HP dv9208nr laptop which has worked perfectly for me until recently. A few days ago after closing the computer and opening it back up i noticed that the wireless wasn't working. Obviously i checked the switch and the switch was on but the LED was orange indicating that wireless connectivity was turned off. I tried restarting and no luck; after a few other simple fixes didn't work; i went to the device manager and noticed that the wireless card wasn't in the list as it should have been. I tried updating the drivers; nothing. HP techs sent me a link to a service manual and instructed me to reseat the card manually, reset the BIOS, and reinstall the drivers. It didn't work. the next day the computer had found the card as new hardware and installed it. it worked fine for a day; then the same thing happened again. Any ideas?

Hi there,
I have a Dell latitude e6500 which I have installed Windows 7 professional on (quite a clean install as was a newish machine).
After the install, I had no wireless connectivity so checked in device manager and my wireless card is just not there. It doesn?t have an exclamation mark next to it?it?s just disappeared from the list.
I?ve searched for ages for help on the web to little avail. People are mostly saying to download the necessary drivers. I?ve tried this however I get an error message that says something along the lines of ?you don?t have the hardware so the driver won?t be installed?
It?s probably worth mentioning that the wireless works fine with my Belkin USB wireless dongle.
Please help, as this is driving me nuts now and I really don?t want to have to uninstall Windows 7 (how do you even do that?! and even if I did, would it make any difference?)
Probably also with mentioning that I am far from an IT expert!

Thank you so much for your help!

Wipe the HDD with KillDisk, then use your Windows 7 DVD to reinstall the OS.

KillDisk - http://jcgriff2.com/killdisk_imgburn.html

It could also be a hardware problem with the wifi.

What's the 7-character "service tag number" of that Dell?

Is that a Dell Latitude D600? If it is, it has both wired and wireless network adapters.

In the Device Manager, what's listed in Network Adapters and Other Devices? Spell them exactly as you see them listed there.

You didn't mention which version of Windows it's using. From what I can determine, the Dell Latitude D600 came with XP.

I have a friend's laptop (Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4040) that she recently got and I can't get the wifi on this thing to work. The built-in wifi card shows fine in Device Manager, but, if I attempt to use it in a network, I get a vague error about driver issues. She got a USB wifi adapter, as well, and the same thing is happening with it. I've installed the drivers from the Toshiba website and made sure they were up to date with Windows for the built-in card and used the CD that came with the on networks wifi adapter to install that driver. Neither adapter shows up in ipconfig /all, either.

Might anyone know where to go next? I could reinstall Windows, but I fear there's something simpler I'm missing.

A:Wireless card(s) show in Device Manager but cannot connect to network

Welcome to Seven Forums,

I'd recommend for you to boot in Safe Mode with Networking by restarting the laptop, continue tapping F8 then select this option. Disable any AV or Security programs, go to Device Manager uninstall the Wi-Fi adapter(s), then reinstall the drivers again.

An update will be nice.

I have windows 7 on compaq presario v2000 laptop. I want to use audacity to record some music from the internet, but when I click on it, it says 'No recording device found'. This is strange, cause I thought the sound card would be what audacity uses to record from, and I dont know what else a recording device would be. Besides on another laptop, a dell inspiron 2200 which has windows xp, everything works fine.

So why is not working on the compaq presrio v2000? I can listen to audio just fine, but I cannot record it.

Help!!!

A:compaq presario v2000 No recording device found

It's...not that simple.

What format is this music that you want to record...being streamed in? What website is the source?

I don't use Audacity, but I've played with it a couple of times...but I was never interested in recording, only the mixing/editing of music files I have on hand. Try reviewing the instructions for using it to record.

As for music via the Internet...I download .flv files from YouTube. Then I must either use a player for that format to enjoy the downloaded video...or I can convert the .flv file to a different format. I convert them to .mp3 files, I'm not interested in the visuals.

What I'm getting at...you cannot record music that you hear on your system...just because you can hear it when on the Internet.

As for recording from the soundcard...yes, that can happen. But only if you provide an input via either the microphone or the external input connection. For example...I can use one of CD players and connect to an amplifier...and pass that signal into my computer via the soundcard...and record the music from the CD.

If we can figure out what you are trying to do, you can probably get instructions on how to do it.

Friends I'm trying to reconstruct a failed Cpq C306us laptop.
I"ve got it working pretty well: the COA called for Media Center Edition 2005 so that's what I installed, with typical disc-install results many have complained about on Windows MCE.... it sorta halfway installed, asked for discs not included with the stack, did not complete install. I patched it with a good late-edition Windows XP Pro SP3 install disc and its up, validated/activated/genuine and all the windows components i KNOW of are up-to-date.
I note there is no MEDIA CENTER actually installed [the same results I got last time I had one of these to redo].
It looks mostly like Win XP Pro, but identifies itself as Windows MCE... par for the course.

I have two remaining issues;
- in Device manager I'm showing one "unknown device" on the intel SM bus. does not have a driver despite running the Intel INF utility and loading all the required drivers from HP website. I don't know what it is or how to fix.
- Though I now am showing the proper Intel embedded SATA hdd controller, I can't operate in SATA mode. Windows will boot-loop if I set it in BIOS. So I am having to operate as IDE device. Is there a fix for this short of bailing to a different version of XP and reinstalling from media?

Also, does anyone know of a utility that can accurately determine exactly which chipset this mboard has? I've been skunked searching for this level of specifications on this machine. Have ... Read more

A:Compaq Presario Laptop C300 C306u Device errors

You can`t change SATA mode from IDE to ACHI without jumping through some hoops and editing the registry for the new mode. Ideally you install Windows with the controller set to ACHI mode but then you need to slipstream the SATA drivers onto the Windows installation disc OR provide the SATA drivers via a floppy disc. There`s one trick that works in many cases though, you start the Windows install with the SATA controller in IDE mode and when it finishes copying the installation and reboots for the first time you enter the BIOS and change the controller to ACHI at that point.

A Google search suggests the chipset is the Intel 940GML(part of the 945 series), you can verify by using the free SIW: http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html

I know the name of the network I can join and the password for it, but I never seem to be able to find a way to do this - which I think is why I am not able to connect. I am not a complete novice, but I am a very frustrated one. Is there something in a config or other system file I need to do to be able to see wireless networks? Any help is appreciated

Dont use the Netgear software to connect, use the windows zero configuration to do this. I have never liked the connection software that netgear uses. You can do this by opening the network connections (Start>Control PAnel>Network Connections) and right click your wireless card, then select "View available wireless networks. If it gives you a prompt saying that the Windows Zero Configuration is disabled, go to Start>Run and type Services.msc, then hit ok. Find in the list Windows Zero Configuration and right click it. Select "Start", then open the "View Available" again. Post results

In the Device Manager there's no list item called Broadcom in Network Adapters like before. I switched off the wireless slider, installed the driver for it. Then I searched in the C:\Windows and saw this file, bw.log. In this file, it said the broadcom is detected, don't know why it doesn't appear in the Device Manager.

I am wanting to find out some information on RAM for my HP Presario Notebook C700. It looks like the maximum RAM that it accepts is 4GB (DDR 667 Mhz). If I install 2 times 2GB Modules does that mean that the system will only acknowledge 3BG and not 4GB. I only bought one 2GB module to put in to replace the 2 * 512GB Modules are currently in it. If I put the 2GB module in will that work fine by itself on one bank. I read somewhere that I should make both sides equal and install either 2 1GB Modules or 2 2GB Modules. I hope I am making sense. Advice would be helpful.

A:RAM For a HP Notebook Presario C700

If you have a 32bit OS then it can only read 3.25GB of RAM do to limitations of the OS. If you have a 64bit OS your system can read 8GB or more of RAM depending on the hardware.

The benifits of putting in 2 sticks or RAM as opposed to a single stick is that 2 sticks can run in dual channel mode which speeds up the RAM. Of course your computer and RAM have to be dual channel as well and 99% of hardware is.

A:New graphics card for a Compaq Presario SR5113WM

Your computer has a X16 PCI-E slot for a video card, so you should have a large selection of video cards to choose from. The problem you'll run into is room in your case, and you have an underpowered 250W power supply. You'll need at least a good 450W power supply and video card that fit in your case. Pretty much any video card you purchase will be significantly more powerful than your old built-in video chip.

The above should do. I'm not 100% on the size of the power supply. It may or may not fit inside your case. I'm very sure the video card will fit.

The computer is running Vista & had viruses, which I (think) I removed with Malwarebytes & also cleaned up with CCleaner & Spybot

I am unsure what to do? The model is HP / Compaq Presario C700 (C742EM)

Hi: You can upgrade to a 64 bit operating system as your hardware can support it. However, I wouldn't do it if I were you as your PC can only take a maximum of 2 GB of memory. That must be a BIOS limitation as the chipset in your PC can recognize up to 8 GB of memory with a 64 bit OS.. A 64 bit OS needs more memory to run than a 32 bit OS does, so there would be no benefit to you installing a 64 bit OS with only 2 GB of memory. IMO, your performance would actually suffer a little over a 32 bit OS running 2 GB of memory. There would be no difficulty installing a 64 ibt OS as your PC's support page has 64 bit drivers available. Most if not all of the Vista 64 drivers will work with W7. My rule of thumb is to never install a 64 bit OS unless you have at least 4 GB of memory installed. Paul

I have tried to connect before and after reformatting the notebook but to no avail. I have looked at a number of threads here and tried a few things suggested for other people with a similar issue but nothing works. I have restarted the router numerous times as well but still no luck.

The PC I am using to post this is connected via the same router and is working fine so what am I doing wrong?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also not sure how to network the notebook and this PC as well.

Cheers T

Hey dudes, i was wondering if you could help me figure out what's going on here, though i might already have a guess, i'd like to get opinions as well as solving matters.

I'm helping my friend solve a problem with her laptop where her Compaq Presario v3119AU suddenly just stopped detecting the wireless card, even in device manager.

Now, we've tried reformatting, running it in linux or win vista and I've even gone so far as to take out her wireless card to test it in my laptop, and to test mine on hers only to get the same results, that the card isn't detected in her compaq, whereas her Broadcom Wireless works on my ASUS laptop...

I'm suspecting that over time of her using the laptop on the bed or so that the board has somewhat cook off... probably... any input on this? so far the only option i see now is to head it back to compaq...

hamsteyr, i'm sorry, this is first symptoms of northbridge dying(nv6150go). the problem is that nv6150go makes some disturbances in pci-ex bus,and thus preventing the wireless card from detection. well, you an try to update your bios, it may help. i had 10 or 20 cases like this in my repairing practice. 5 laptops were cured(completely?) with BIOS reflashing. the others - nv6150go/nf-spp100 replacing.

im going to school right now and im taking a 3d animation class and i finally got the program ive been using in class which is "Maya" it runs good on my compaq presario sr1630nx but it seems to be choppy at times with a little lag my instructor says to get a graphics card. so i was wondering what would be a great graphics card thats compatible with my system for 3d animation and some pc games. right now the graphics card my system is running is a ATI Radeon Xpress 200 i would also like to have two monitors running on my system so i could have maya on one screen and a picture reference on the second screen.

A:compatible graphics card for my compaq presario sr1630nx

HP doesn't list what it has for a power supply here,

Compaq Presario SR1630NX Desktop PC Product Specifications - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

but going on how HP likes to put in a power supply that is just powerful enough to run the system as it is out of the box, I'm guessing that it will be something in the 250-300W range. If that is what it is (only way to find out is pop the side off and see what it shows on the label), then a new power supply is also going to be needed.

With that in mind, how much are you looking to spend?

It is highly likely that your laptop has imbedded video on the motherboard and it cannot be upgraded. All you can do is max out the SYSTEM RAM and install a larger faster hard drive

Does a Compaq Presario (Pentium 4) have any video card slots?

I ran that cpu-z program and under graphics interface its all grey...not sure if that means I have no slots, or if my integrated 82845g Graphics controller has something to do with it

A:Does a Compaq Presario 6000 have any video card slots?

Very easy to find out. Unhook all the cables and then set the tower on a clean surface, there are usually screws or thumbscrews holding the side pannels into place(when your look at the front of the tower take the pannel on the left side off) unscrew those and pull the pannel off. BEFORE TOUCHING ANYTHING ground yourself on something metal like a fosit or the inside of your case(not the inner parts just case) Now look a the expansion slots, if you see a slot that is set further back than the others it is a graphics expansion port - if its the same size roughly as the others but setback its AGP - if its longer and setback its PCI express. Now put the side pannel back on - hook up the cables and you're good to go.

hello everyone.i have very little knowledge about laptop hardware and this is why i am posting here.
i have a compaq presario v6000 and it has been running fine for the past couple of years.a while back it started making noises and started heating up,but it never self booted or shutdown by itself.i had planned to get it serviced and clean its fan etc but it got delayed..2 days back, when i tried turning it on, it just wouldn't.i mean i switch on the power,i see the volume and power LEDs turned on but the screen wont appear.
i believe its graphics card has burned up or something. i have dropped it off the repair shop and all that they are doing is just scaring me saying that the graphics card can't be replaced as it is;the entire motherboard has to be changed.and even if the card could be changed,it wouldn't give any guarantee of not burning up again
so guyz here is my question: can the graphics card of a Compaq Presario V6000 notebook be replaced?i donot know which model it is but i guess its the default card that comes with every notebook of the said model.
i would really appreciate a quick response as i need an urgent verdict.i can not afford an entire new motherboard at this time but i need to work on the laptop..

A:Dead graphics card on Compaq Presario V6000

I think the shops advise is most probably correct. I've been unable to confirm this for certain but in general 90% of laptops have the graphics card integrated into the motherboard, so if the graphics have failed then it has to be a new mobo.

The overheating was probably caused by a faulty fan or dust build up. This could also have damaged the CPU. Considering the cost of replacement your best bet would be a new PC.

I have read some reports that the V6000 had known problems with faulty soldering on the graphics chips. So, there is just a slim chance you might be able to find an electronics expert who could check the solderiing but it is micro soldering to say the least.

I have a Geforce 8400 in my Compaq Presario SR5450F, but I'm a gamer of sorts and this video card doesn't work with a lot of the games I want to play. I was looking at the Geforce 9500, but it requires 350W and the power supply in my computer is only 250W. Is there any graphics card that will work in my computer for games such as The Sims 3 and Starcraft II? Could I get a new power supply that will support the Geforce 9500 AND fit in my computer? I was planning on getting the parts from Newegg.com if they'll even work. Thanks very much in advance for an input!

A:Upgrading a Compaq Presario SR5450F graphics card

The thing with companies like HP, Dell, etc. is their cases are designed so that they try to force the buyer to go through them for upgrades costing considerably more $.

Measure your power supply's dimensions and we'll take it from there. Also, make sure your motherboard can handle an upgrade to this card.

Can you link us to your system?

A:What kind of a graphics card for Compaq Presario 6000?

Hello and Welcome to Techspot!!

I couldn't find much info about your computer.
Open it, and take a look at the mobo (motherboard ), if you see only slots like these, you only have standard PCI slots:

If you see a slot like this brown one (not necessarily brown, can be another color), then you have an AGP slot:

If you're lucky enough, and have a long slot like this one, you have a PCI-Express slot:

What kind of slot do you have?
If you've only have standard PCI slots, check this great thread by Vnf4ultra:

I have a Presario C700 with Windows Vista Home Premium. I have 2 issues:
1 the touchpad often stops allowing me to scroll and I have to tap it multiple times to make it click on something

2 even more annoying is that when I'm typing the cursor will skip to a random place on the page and keys get typed that I know I didn't touch. At first I thought it was an overly sensitive keyboard, but then I had a friend watch me to see if I was touching other keys and I wasn't!

Hi,

I have a Compaq Presario C300 notebook. I have excellent strength connection to the wireless connection at home (and if I try to plug in the cable, the wired connection works too). However, when I open a browser (IE and Firefox), it does not connect and comes with the standard error message of "...site could be temporarily busy, ...check your computer's network connection,......if your computer's network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web."

I tried reinstalling the network driver, also the firewall settings but no luck. I have no clue how to solve this problem because my other laptop and PC are working perfectly fine and so I feel it is THIS laptop's problem.

Thanks in advance,

Hello, all.

I am trying to install an ATI Rage 128 Pro 32MB PCI video card in my old Compaq Presario 7594 Desktop with onboard video running Win98. I have tried installing the card and the drivers and deleting the old drivers in just about every possible combination. Here's the problem - when the card is installed, I get no video on the monitor at all, even when the monitor is connected to the onboard video connector. The only setting in the BIOS that seems to have anything to do with video is under Advanced>PCI Devices>[Onboard] VGA. The default setting here seems to be "Disabled," but the only user-selectable settings are IRQ 3, 5, or 11.

The ATI driver installation program will not complete the install if the card is not in the slot, so I have installed the generic PCI Display Adapter driver, still with no luck.

I want to get this @!$% card installed so my son can play his sim games on this machine instead of my VAIO laptop.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jason

I'm not sure if this belongs in Drivers or here, but I'm having an issue with the video drivers on my laptop. It's an HP Compaq Presario V6000 series,v6205 according to the limited tech support I received.
The laptop was purchased in '06 and originally ran Windows Vista, however I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit a couple of days ago, and have had an issue finding compatible drivers, namely a driver for my nVidia graphics card. HP's website has the drivers for XP and Vista, but want to charge me to get 7 compatible drivers (59.99 for a one-time use). I've read on other forums that it is possible to take the non-manufacturer drivers and modify the .INF files to work, but I'm inexperienced with that sort of stuff. Can anyone offer some advice or walk me through this? The card is an nVidia GeForce 6150. If there are any other details I've left out, I'd be happy to add them. Thanks in advance.
EDIT: In the event that I can't secure the proper drivers, does anyone know if Linux is an option for such a machine? Or would the same driver issues be present?

I tried Windows Recovery. I can't safe mode it, and choosing previous working settings doesn't work either.

Help, please?

Did you try a Windows recovery or was it a System Restore? Have you tried 'Last Known Good Configuration'?

Upon boot tap the F8 key and when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.

If it works try updating your video driver.

The light stayed amber instead of turning green. She clicked on HP wireless assistant and the program did not run. WLAN does not show up in her device manager.

At her apartment she has been using an external wireless modem to access networks in her neighborhood. Her internal wireless was interfering with the external connection so she shut the internal one off via the switch on the front of her computer. This has always worked ok for her in the past. Could that have affected the internal wireless?

She did the disable/enable of the network connection. This did not help. Her boyfriend looked at things and discovered that the WLAN was missing in the device manager.

She then restarted her computer and installed all Windows updates and restarted computer again. At this point she realized that she no longer had audio. When she holds the cursor over the speaker icon on the task bar it says "No audio ouput device is installed".

At this point she got on the phone with HP tech support. Their only solution was for her to pay $300 and ship it to them to see if they could figure out the problem. There are several models of Presario that have this very p... Read more

I have a Compaq Laptop model c700 series running Vista Basic. The laptop is approximately 4 months old but I happen to have dropped it about 1 month ago from a distance of about 2.5 feet it chipped a piece of the front bezel but that I am not worried about a little super glue can fix that. The problem I am having is when i start it up it will run fine for about 20-35 min then it will freeze up requiring a reboot after the reboot it will run for about 35-45 min and freeze up. Then it will restart a thnird time and do the same thing ,but on the fourth restart it used to run completely normal no reboot,no freeze just perfectly fine this is plugged up or on battery power it does not matter. Now it freezes and requires reboot no matter how many times I restart it. Could someone please help me find a solution to this laptop before it becomes a pile of finely crushed parts. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

A:Compaq Laptop c700 need help

It should still be under warranty. I know that you dropped it but it sounds like a cooling fan or 2 broke and as soon as it heats up it freezes. You will most likely have to send it back to get fixed unless you are comfortable taking apart a laptop.

I'm not particularly knowledgeable with computers, so please bear with me if I'm missing something overwhelmingly simple.

Anyway, I'm trying to figure out exactly which graphics card is in this old machine. A friend passed it along to me after mine gave up the ghost and I reinstalled Windows XP. I checked DirectX Diagnostic Tool and Device Manager, but neither can tell what the heck the graphics card is. Neither can find the sound card, either. I need to know what it is so I can find the appropriate driver. Here's what Device Manager lists under "Other devices";

Audio device on high-definition audio bus
SM bus controller
Video controller
Video controller (VGA compatible)

I also tried the AMD auto-detect tool, but it flicks open for a moment, then closes immediately for some reason.

I also opened the machine up to see if I could find a product number on the graphics card, but there isn't one. There appears to have been a sticker at one point, but it isn't there now. The best I can tell you is that it's red and bears the words "graphics by ATI Radeon".

I'm afraid I don't know much of anything else about this computer, but if there's anything you need to know, ask away and I'll do my best to find out. If a photo of the card would help to determine its model, I can do that.

Thanks in advance, sorry I couldn't offer more info.
