Hello i have a HP G60-447Cl notebook that came with Vista Home Premium and I ran a hard drive test from the HP setup utility which failed at 82% which i was kind of expecting but when i hit <esc> to back out my screen froze where it was at and when i tried to hold the power/reset button to shut it down nothing happens. My battery is non-removable so that option is out. Short of just lettting the battery run out I have no clue how to turn it off. Does any one know of any thing that can help me or have a theory as to what caused this in the first place.

The tips I got with this Kensington 33197 power adapter have numbers stenciled on them like N3, N5, N19, etc. The tips sold on their web site make no mention of the "N" numbers and have numbers like K20059, K20050, etc. and there is no cross reference.

You can also see a complete reference for "N" numbers to all the laptops they support at the above link. Again, no mention of the numbers Kensington uses on their site.

I need a cross reference for these kinds of numbers.

Kensington referred me to their telephone tech support; but, there is a language or cultural barrier that prevents their understanding what I need.

Does anyone know of such a reference?

My laptop will no longer turn on.  When the AC adapter is plugged in, the LED light is white indicating power is arriving at the laptop. However, nothing happens when I push the power button. Troubleshooting steps I have completed already include: Hard reset (several times including after each step below)Tried starting without the batteryRemoved all removable components and reseated themRemoved all removable components as well as bottom cover. Cleaned with compressed air. Put everything back.Nothing appears wrong and nothing happened between the last time it turned on and this time that I am aware of. The laptop is out of warranty, and I am pretty handy with computers. Is there anything that can be suggested short of a hardware replacement that would help get this resolved? TIA

Hey Guys, I have a G-Series HP Notebook with windows 7. Just recently it keeps dropping my WiFi signal. I go and reset the AR9285 802.11b/g/n and it works for 1 to 20 minutes then it loses the signal. Signal strength is always in the Fair to Good range.
I re-downloaded the Driver Software and it actually started working better. I thought I fixed the problem, but after about 20 mins it dropped the signal.
My next approach was going to be, like a Master Reset/ Just hate losing stuff.
Any suggestions? I would really appreciate any input. Thanks all..! Peace.!

A:Constantly need to reset Adapter

Fair to good isn't sufficient. Try one of the Wi-Fi Range Extenders, but first see what happens when Notebook is very close to signal. Could be defective adapter.

I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software issue, so I'll start here.

I have an HP Envy 17 j013cl, I am running Windows 8 (possibly 8.1), and the adapter is an Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230.

My dear husband decided to mess with my computer. I have decided not to divorce him for this, but it was tempting. He uninstalled a Windows update because it was keeping him from playing some game. No, he did not create a restore point. Ever since then, I have had trouble with my wireless adapter. I have to reset it every half-hour or so. I've tried installing and running HP's diagnostics software; it only tells me, over and over again, that it has reset the adapter. It also says, "the default gateway is not available," and fixes it (temporarily).

I did a google search, which hinted that it could be a driver issue. So I traipsed over to Intel and downloaded and installed the latest driver. This has increased the time that I have between resets by about 10 minutes, but hasn't solved the underlying issue. Whatever the problem is, it sometimes discombobulates the computer to the point that it can't find the adapter, or any problems, and I have to restart it completely.

Now the obvious thing to do here would be to reinstall the update. But, when I installed the HP Support Assistant, all the updates that I could see disappeared, and now there are no updates to be found. So, no joy there. (Besides, I kinda wanna play the old games, too.) I am n... Read more

I'm not a big fan of the "Troubleshooting" options for network connections in W7 because, simply, they kinda suck.

Back in XP, when your network went down, due to lost power, or having to reset your router or modem, it was simple enough to tell it to repair, which would always reset the network adapter, to force a fresh connection, but I can't seem to find a way to just reset the network adapter. Did they take this feature out when they added the troubleshooting tool?

Honestly, they troubleshooting tool can take forever to "find the problem," even when I already know what's wrong and that a simple reset will solve the problem, not to mention sometimes it just decides that it's just not even going to try to reset the adapter.

I know I can always disable and enable the connection, but it's not the same right click the icon in the tray and select repair that it used to be. It gets annoying having to jump through hoops to do something that used to be two simple clicks, mostly trying to fix other people's computers.

A:Force Reset Network Adapter?

Anyone able to answer this? I have the exact same problem. Happens within an hour of starting my computer and I have to use Win Network Diag, which checks EVERYTHING, saving the actual problem (reset network adapter) until last- which then solves the issue.

IS there any way to just force a network reset? I used to just unplug my USB network adapter and plug it back in, but it eventually screwed up my modem IP (long story) so I can't do that anymore.

I have win 8.1 running on a home wi-fi using a TP Link 150Mbs wireless N adapter. After getting a new router recently (Orange livebox) I happened to run a diagnostics on the connection using the in built windows software. It said there was a problem and reset the adapter. I did not know of any issue as the connection worked fine.

A few days later I ran it again with the same result.

Although it works fine, I am left wondering why it needs to keep resetting. This can happen if I run another test immediately after running a test

I am running win7 x64 ultimate. I set a MAC address in the bios and somehow Windows has saved it somewhere. I have deleted the device in device manager and when it was redetected it was still there. I have reset the bios to defaults but when I run 'ipconfig /all' the MAC is still there. How can I get rid of it?

A:How can I delete/reset MAC of network adapter?

Your problem is not addressed clearly.Atleast to me it is not clear.

First, it is for the first time I am hearing the Mac address being set in the BIOS. Can you explain how was it set in the BIOS?

Second, what exactly is the device? Name/manufacturer/Model

Third, why do you want to change/reset the Mac Address? ( Yep, it may be possible to reset the Mac Address and I had discussed this matter with NoelDP long back on a different context but I would like to know why you want to change/reset it. What exactly is your problem that necessitates such a change?)

I am connected to cable isp modem (also new modem, exchanged because I thought it was a modem problem, but wasn't) through Netgear (brand new NETGEAR R6300) wireless router (which I bought because I was having this problem with my old router and I thought it was a router problem, but clearly is not). My connection to internet keeps dropping and I have to keep resetting the wireless adapter (qualcomm atheros) in order to reconnect the router. If I connect direct from computer to modem, there is no drop and the wireless icon on my desktop (windows 7) never shows an interuption of internet unless the router is in the process of resetting. Netgear genie reports no internet access (can't get on line, as well), but the desktop icon shows continual connection. I have done a million power cycles, reset everything I can think of and researched what could be wrong with my wireless adapter. There was a very old thread on here titled "Connection issues, randomly stop connecting" and I found that I have the EXACT issue as that post - this post never said if the issue was solved. I am wondering how telephone line issues could be interfering, if this will help, and if I need to order a repair for that??? Please help!

This was the original thread that I found:

A:Continuously have to reset wireless adapter

Is this the only PC that disconnects - do other devices connected work OK - if so how are they connected to the router - wireless or wired

would you post the following tests when the internet is working OK, and then repeat ALL the tests when the internet disconnects.
Make sure you also indicate on the reply which tests are for what condition.
please include the xirrus screen shots for both conditions - see how below.

Please post back here the make and exact model of the router and if you have a separate modem, the make and exact model of the modem.

Please make a note of the status of the lights on the modem and on the router when working normally - post that light status here.
Now when the internet disconnects make a note of the status of the lights for the modem and router here again. also note which have changed.

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, Mcafee , AVG etc

This is a common problem (I see lots of posts)
The problem source is the [Dell] AC adapter.  PA-21 Family, 65W, P/N: NX061.  It is made in China.
I have an XPS M1330.  Using Dell after warranty service, replaced the Mother Board twice, replaced the battery twice, replaced the AC adapter twice - not fixing it.
Turns out the power warning message is very informative.  It states "Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for best system performance".  So, I plugged in my Dell 95W adapter - WOW Problem Solved.
A lab test of my new Dell 65W AC adapter shows it to be 64.6 watts.  If this unit gets hot (like after several hours of use), it may not put out the full 65 watts - the system may not recognize the adapter, it may power the system ok, but won't charge the battery.
These units burn out after only a few months of use. Their cables are too fragile. If Dell's or their supplier's Quality Control can't produce a reliable 65W product - I found seveal "Made In USA" universal adapters.

A:AC Adapter - Alert - "AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined"

Well my solution was simple.
I just removed the battery pack and powered up my notebook. Then I turned off the notebook replaced the battery pack and VOILA. The error message was gone.

Was changing BIOS settings (PnP/PCI Configuration) while installing a modem (IRQ 3 was set to Legacy/ISA), and enabled "Reset Configuration Data". What in the heck possessed me to do that, do not know. Saved changes, exited BIOS, and after
that, got the following message on the screen:
"Host adapter hard reset timeout.
BIOS not installed.
Unable to enable/disable host adapter shadow RAM."

Have a SCSI hd connected to an Adaptec Host Adapter (1540CF/1542CF). Tried Control>A to access the BIOS of the AHA, but NOTHING happened. Needless to say, cannot access the SCSI drive C:/

Did I fry the goose on this one? Needless to say, need some help.

Hi all
I have this particular problem which showed at the same time when I installed Norton Ghost 14.0.
Last night I bough WD 1TB My Book external hard drive and decided to do a back up.
Funny thing was that I was getting an error that NG has lost connection to a server?
and could not complete a back up. Tried few times and same error appeared. Hard drive was in FAT32 partition so this morning I though I will reformat that drive to NTFS (took 11 hours) and to try again.
This time I did not receive any errors as in lost connection to a server but my internet connection was lost. So Vista Ultimate has detected a problem and reset my network driver (Realtek).
This was not happening before. Coincidence?Maybe but I don't believe it is.
Is there an option to be selected not to switch internet or something?
Running Vista Ultimate 64, Q6600 4Gb Ram dual boot ( 2HD XP and Vista)

anyone else experienced similar? Any ideas as to what the problem is and how to fix it?

Thanks

A:BSOD attempt to reset the display adapter timeout

Hi -

The error you are describing is a Video TDR timeout. There are 2 bugchecks associated:

0x116 = driver was unable to reset within 30 secs; BSOD ensued
0x117 = same as 0x116, except the driver did ultimately reset. This is called a "Live Kernel Event".

See if updating your video drivers helps.

I am having an issue with my wireless connection on one of my computers. We run a total of 5 computers on my wireless network and only have the problem on one. After it has been sitting for a while, (usually overnight, it is my home office computer) I lose connection. It will have the icon with the computer screen with a red x over it. When I click on it it turns to bars with a yellow symbol over it. I click on that and it shows available networks. I click to connect to mine and the yellow symbol becomes a blue circle. It stays like that for a few minutes and I then get a cannot connect to network error. I click on trouble shoot, it detects and resets the adapter and it connects. I have already tried unchecking the power saving box in adapter properties and flushing the dns. I also disabled the power shut of in the computer power management. I have tried 3 different adapters and the same problem. So far I have had no issues with disconnect while using the computer. Possibly happens when the comp goes to sleep. I think I will disable sleep mode overnight and see if that helps. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I just moved into a new place and I've been having a lot of trouble with the wireless connection. There are 4 other people sharing the wireless and none of them seem to have problems, and my phone connects fine, but my laptop will randomly lose internet access while still detecting the network. When I run the troubleshooter it says it has reset the wireless adapter, and the connection will work again, but sometimes only for a few minutes before it craps out. I don't have access to the wireless router itself, so doing anything with that will require asking the landlady (who doesn't speak English well). I had access fine for the first two days after I moved in. I did install a couple of programs after that: 7-Zip and Flash Player 11.2 (since the newest Flash version crashes my Firefox). I don't know if that could have anything to do with it.

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit on an Asus laptop. After searching around the forum a bit, I followed the instructions in this post and will paste the results here. I don't know if the ping address starting with 206 might be invalid since the post is from several years ago.

Thanks so much for any help!

Hi.

I had this problem for a while and thought it was due to the network adapter, got a different one (USB external wifi adapter) and problem persists.

Adobe flash player(youtube, ted talks etc) is notorious for causing this. I would try to watch a video and not that it is very slow to open, it buffers about 10sec and then stops, I usually loose all connectivity at this point and sometimes it will recover but usually I need to either switch or reset network adapter, then its very fast till it happens again.

I also should mention that I tried updating that flash player multiple times but it always prompts me before a content loads due to it being outdated... there is never error during update it states it is updated, so unless adobe releases updates every few hours there is something f%^&y going on

specs:
64bit Win 7 SP1
i7 3770k
16gb ram

intel z77 by asrock

adapters:
1- Qualcomm Atheros AR9285
2- Realteck RTL8187 USB 2.0 (802.11b/g 54Mbps)

I tried using alternative browser (i use FF) but it is even slower, more DCs. I would not like to use Chrome however and i do not have it installed.

any help is greatly appreciated as I am getting really frustrated with this.

A:Losing connectivity, need to frequently reset network adapter.

Hi Royroy,
I'm another car mechanic,
Its possible that this is related to your earlier thread.
Now that adapter is from a laptop, if its installed in your desktop, according to your specs, it might be that its pulling the wrong voltage, and shutting down to protect itself.
However that does not apply to the Realtek device.
There are various fix's that appear on the net
Dissable ipv6
Change the security setting to WPA2
Change the current channel, use auto if possible.
Review the settings in the driver Advanced options,
Then the obvious
Update wifi drivers and Bios

Flash player update is being stopped by IE or group policy settings

Suggest you also run sfc /scannow

I have this Vista computer of a relative. Here's the issue, I take the Vista desktop home with me, connect it up to my Linksys router connected through AT&T DSL and opened up Internet Explorer & Firefox and EVERYTHING is PERFECT. I can go to any site at all.

So when connecting to their DSL modem direct, and accessing the settings through modem, I click on "diagnose connection" and EVERYTHING passes, the PPPoE, ADSL, etc. passes. ALL GREEN. And then when going to "Login", it clearly states, "You are now connected to the Internet."
But yet, IE & Firefox CAN NOT access Internet, I checked firewall and even disabled it all completely, still can not access it. I am able to ping the local loopback and also ping yahoo.com and google.com, & other sites, but still doesn't not work. So taking it home, I know it can not be the firewall, or TCP/IP stack, or anything wrong with the computer period. It connects fine at my place.

Going to the Network screen and seeing the lines from the Network to the PC and to the Internet, there's a RED X on line from the NETWORK to the Internet saying CLICK HERE to diagnose, so I do that and it is unable to find the problem, but states there is a problem and then it says to try to reset the adapter, but yet that is unable to solve problem too the Vista OS states.

So I am believing it's either on their end, ATT or with the wires in the home. I tried another brand new ethernet cable, but same issue.... Read more

Our wired network connection frequently and intermittently goes to local access only and requires a reset of the adapter in the networking utility of Vista Home Premium 64. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why or when it drops. Sometimes it will stay up for hours and sometimes it will drop every few minutes.

Computer is Acer Aspire x1200 with 4GB RAM. OS is Vista Home Premium 64, SP1. Network connection is through a Netgear WGR614 wireless router with 4-port ethernet switch.

A Toshiba laptop and Compaq desktop running WiFi have no connection problems. Dell and Gateway XP towers on ethernet are also OK.

Acer published a BIOS update to address a problem with the adapter shutting down, but I've seen no mention of the reduced connectivity problem.

I was trying to find out how to set the two of them up, and stupidly followed the wrong instructions, setting the IP address to 192.168.1.100. (yes I've tried typing that into browser, tried typing the old one, tried routerlogin.net and .com. Then I tried resetting the network adapter (following threads by people who had the same problem) by doing the following in elevated command prompt:
ipconfig /flushdns
nbtstat -R
nbtstat -RR
netsh int reset all
netsh int ipv4 reset
netsh int ipv6 reset
netsh winsock reset
And then a reboot.

I've tried resetting the router, by holding the pin in and letting the test light flash for a good 20-30 seconds. I've tried turning it off, waiting, turning back on. I've tried restarting in safe mode.

What can I do to connect to this router again so I can restore the proper IP? I don't have another laptop I can use.

My son took apart our computer. Trying to put it back together. Forgive me. I am a total novice when it comes to computers. I don't know what motherboard I have or basically anything else. Don't know if there are standard ways of hooking these wires up or not. Just wondering how to install the wires that say:
power sw
reset sw
power led
hdd led
About the only one I can figure out is the speaker wire. When sitting with the cpu in front of you the speaker wire goes in the top left set of pins.
Sorry I can't give you more help than this.
I really appreciate it. If no one knows, I appreciate ANY assistance at all. I appreciate you putting up with what might be a dumb question.
Thanks.

A:Power SW & Reset SW

Usually in the bottom right (if you are looking at it in the case, and the case is a tower) you will see a line of pins looking like this ::::::::::::::::: Also if you look closely (use reading glasses or a hand lens or a magnifying glass if you need) the pins should be labeled, it should be fairly obvious then which pins go where.

Try that first, and if you can't figure it out, then you need to do a few more things and post back:
1 - Is this a store brand computer? (dell, hp, compaq, gateway, ect) If so what model?
2 - If this isn't a store brand computer then look on the motherboard, there is a really high chance somewhere on it it says what brand and its model number.
3 - This is stretching it a bit (but may help if you can find motherboard brand but not model). Do you know if you have an AMD or Intel processor, and also the speed if you know that.

For the last two weeks, every time I start my Dell INSPIRON E1705 while using the power supply I am greeted with the following message. "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 90W AC adapter or higher for best system operation". I press the F1 Key and everything works fine. I've read about this on other websites and most say it's a design flaw in the power supply after the cord has been properly wound around the supply as designed. Apparently a few of the cords internal wire strands become broken and cause this message. My computer is from June 2006 and shouldn't be having this issue so early...or ever. This seems like a flaw that should have created some type of manufacturers recall since so many people are having this issue. I'm of course out of warranty, will Dell replace this free of charge?

`

A:Power Supply - "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined....."

You are correct, the failure is due toloss of the power supply ID signal. Sometimes this happens because of strain on the plug, which breaks the signal wire. Some even are so severe that the insulation breaks away from the plug; this is due to rough handling. The other cause is one or more of the power socket solder connections to the system board become broken. This also is related to severe handling. I have seen one case where all three power connections and three of four mechanical connections were disconnected. If the power supply is bad, a replacement will cure the problem. If not, then the socket is bad, and this will require a system board replacement. If you are experienced, you can try to resolder the connections. I am experienced and was not able to get my daughter's E6000 to work by resoldered. More recent Dells are using a replacable power connection board which is a much cheaper repair.

Hi!  The 840 G3 appears to have a battery compartment that is secured by screws.  Sometimes there is a combination of keys that can be pressed that will simulate the function of a power reset (powering the laptop down, removing the battery, pressing the power button for a length of time to drain capacitors, replacing battery, and powering up) so that users don't have to remove the battery.  I've googled and found some key combinations for other HP products but can't find one for the 840 G3.  Does anyone know of one? Thanks!

A:How to power reset 840 G3 laptop

Hi, Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. Welcome! I am not 100% sure if I understand you but I'll try to help. As mentioned by you and as confirmed by the product's manual, it comes with non-removable fixed battery. May be you want to perform hard reset to power off the computer >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NJQM8vJa9Q Why do you want to perform this you write about ? Is there some issues with Windows ? If so, have you tried restarting it (instead of Shut down) ?  Because in Windows 8/8.1/10 this process is by default different from what it was in Windows XP/Vista/7.

I just installed an Asus P6T mobo, in an Antec 1200, with an i7 930, and I am having problems with the system panel connector (power sw, you know, the thing with the power/ground and reset/ground that plugs into the case power/reset wires). If the case sits for a long length of time, it won't power up. I hit the power button and it doesn't do anything. It's been doing this since the first power up after installation. To fix the problem, although temporarily, I have to pull the system panel connector adapter out, replug the reset wire, the power wire and the led wire, and plug the adapter back in. Once I unplug it and refit all the wires, it boots right up.

It doesn't happen in short intervals, however. I can shut the system down, wait a few seconds, and it'll power right back up.

Finally, after I refit all the plugs on the system panel connector I have to change the boot order on my hard drives. Don't know if this is related though...

A:Problem with power / reset sw

Instead of unplugging the panel connectors from the motherboard, try switching the power off at the back of the power supply for a couple of minutes. Of course, the PC should be powered off at the time. Turn the switch on the PSU back on and see if it will start.

Hello,

i have a weird problem: every time i reset, whether soft reset or hard reset, my pc turns off with a clicking sound and refuses to turn on again for around five minutes, during which the PSU power button must be on. Trying to turn the PC's power button on too soon causes the fans to turn on for a second before turning off again once. Doing it again nets no result until around 5 minutes have passed.

Everything else works perfectly.

The machine is built with spare components i had stored safely, which were never used before and are practically brand new:

mobo: asrock g41m-gs
cpu: intel core 2 quad 9550s
ram: 4 gb ram Kingston 800 Mhz DDR2 HyperX 8500
HDD: Hitachi 1Tb
GPU: ati radeon sapphire 5750
PSU: LinQ P4-500W

I'm fairly sure i setup the jumpers and the case connectors right, so i dont know what could be causing this.
Resetting the CMOS and running the mobo with default settings seems to make soft resets work for a while, but it doesn't last.

Any ideas? This machine is made of spare parts so i'll have to use it even if it's a cripple, but it would be nice if there was a solution.

My laptop was working fine yesterday, then we had a thunderstorm last night. I was worried it might get fried because of the storm so I shut it down and unplugged it. This morning it would not power on.

It is a Gateway TA6. When I plug in the AC adapter the battery light comes on. It will not power on though. I found something about doing an ATX reset and I tried that. What I did was unplugged everything including the battery held down the power button for 15 secs then again for 30 secs (when I tried it a second time) I then tried just plugging in the ac adapter and tried to power it on, that didn't work, so I tried plugging in the battery with no ac adapter and that did not work either. I tried it both ways several times varing the amount of time I held down the power button. It has been plugged in all day so I know the battery should be fully charged by now.

Can someone PLEASE help me? I have a lot of financial info on there that I need to get OFF before we go visit family in a couple of days. I have some stuff backed up to my Free Agent Go, but not the updated stuff I need. Can anyone help? I would be SO grateful!!!! Thanks for reading!!

Are the power and reset switches -- the ones that connect to the system board -- on most computer enclosures simple momentary (make/break) buttons? I want to replace a "flakey" one on a computer, but I have not been able to locate any specification for these switches. Is there anything "fancy" about them?

The NB 100 has 2 usb ports on its right side. I tried plugging in an external cd drive and got a red flagged box from the bottom task bar stating something about device drawing too much power and that the supply would be stopped.
Since then the usb ports 'appear' dead. Nothing I plug in is recognised by the NB100.

It does say in the user manual that if an overload is detected the power to usb ports can be stopped. However, it does not say how to reset the ports ie power to them.

Both the card reader and usb port on the front left are still working.

I have tried updating BIOS to the latest 2.10, setting all bios settings to default using F2 at bootup and have even bought 'Device Driver' to ensure all drivers are up to date.

Can anyone help??? I'm sure there is a simple answer but just can't see it.

Ideally I would like to avoid having to reinstall XP as I don't have the disk and the hard drive doesn't appear to have an XP partition.

Help!!!!!!!!!

A:NB100 no usb power - how to reset

Hi

In your case I would recommend removing the USB port /controller /hub from device manager.
Just simply go to device manager, expand the USB controller area and delete all the devices which are available in this area.

After new reboot, the system (Win XP in your case) should recognize the USB ports and the driver should be installed again.
Then reboot once again connect an USB device and check if this helps?

Just for info: the USB 2.0 ports provide 500mA? so in some cases the external USB device would not be detected when such device would need more than the usual 500mA. In such case such device should be connected to two USB ports using an Y USB cable or should use an external power source as some USB hubs do.

Actually it burned out, when I tried to force power it down. I replaced it, but it wouldnt work anyway. Only way I can power my system up is by holding Memory OK button on my motherboard. Everything works OK afterwards. Reset function still works on the button though. Any ideas what to do and what could be the problem? Thanks

A:Power/Reset button

You will have to look at a diagram of what each connector is for. They vary a lot and just because 2 particular connectors on one board are for power or reset doesn't mean that the same ones will be used on a different board. Though the polarity doesn't matter for the switches, you have to make sure it is right for LED's or they won't work.

I bought a used HP Envy 700-210xt from a guy who was selling it cheap because he couldnt fix it. I got it and it has a power on password protecting it. I tried to reset the Bios by removing the CMOS battery for about 45 min,  also tried to do a reset by holding down the Windows key and the B button down as instructed but it would just stay stuck on black screen. When I powered off and powered back up it would back to the Black screen with the blue power on password box. I even tried to jump the CMOS PW as I read online but that did not fix the issue either.

A:How to Reset a Power On password

Hi: If there is a clear P/W jumper (and it looks like there may be one on the motherboard because I see a picture of a couple tiny blue jumpers), see if this works... Shut down and unplug the PC. Move the clear P/W jumper one pin over.  From the pictures it looks like it can only be moved one way. Plug in and turn on the Pc.  The BIOS P/W should now be cleared. Shut down and unplug the PC. Move the clear P/W jumper back to its original position. Plug in and power on the PC. Done.

About a week ago, I came home and my clock was blinking 12:00 and my PC I had left on was turned off (a mild storm passed by). Now my PC won't turn on anymore, no fans, no lights, no sounds.. nothing.

Things to note:
1) Yes, I checked to make sure the PSU switch was on and plugged in. I tried different outlets.,
2) My PC was plugged into a power strip during the "storm" (not sure how much surge protection that provides)
3) No visible burn marks on my hardware
4) I bought a new power supply because the PSU was my first suspect since it was 20 pin and I needed a new a 24 pin to fit my motherboard best anyways. ---No luck with new PSU---
5) I figured it might be my front panel power switch, so I tried bypassing it by using the reset button as the on/off power sw. I also tried touching the on/off pins lightly with a screwdriver ---No luck---
6) I've tried naked booting, with just mobo, cpu, and video card.
7) I've tried 3 different computer power cords.
8) When I turn on my new PSU I can hear it begin a very soft hum (like a capacitor charging or something) so power is getting to the PSU.
9) I've tried booting with both 110V / 220V PSU settings
10) I've tried taking out RAM and reinserting
11) Idk if this is relevant, but my drive data cables are very old.
12) My computer is basically new... new cpu, new mobo, new ram, new PSU.

My best guess is that it has something to do with the front panel power switch.... Read more

A:Power reset now, PC won't turn on at all

We just had a nice line of storms come through a few weeks ago.

I was extremely busy replacing motherboard and PSU combos on various customer computers, mind you after having fixed them, I STRONGLY recommended they buy a decent surge protector.

Turns out all but one were running straight out the wall.

I've come across one scenario where the motherboard survived a PSU failure, luckily for me that was mine about a month ago.

Generally a PSU fails, it takes the motherboard with it, if you have any other motherboard that will jive with your hardware, swap it out.

No Headbuster it is not normal, Most of the routers that I deal with do keep their settings when the power is removed and restored.

What might be happening is that the router has not completed it's startup routines and connecting to your ISP before your computer keeps asking for an IP.

I recommend that you plug in the router a few minutes before you turn your computer on and see if then your pc picks up an ip properly.

What you might be experiencing is hurrying the router when it is not ready.

Now I can't find what web site I went to and when I turn my computer on it boots up through the two ACER screens then a screen that says 64% donlowded pops up for a second or two then it restarts and it dose it all again.Thats the story behind it, and I was woundering if a new copy of windows would work or is my hard drive to messed up and I need a new one, or any other advise anyone has would be helpfull. Thank you for your time,AJ

So basically my computer has ceased to function on the latest windows 10 update, 100% disk usage is occurring at all times leaving the computer inoperable and I've found that reverting it to factory settings and not updating fixes that. Well the other night I clicked on update and shut down accidentally rather than sleep. I immediately went to factory reset it again and it finished and put me at the setup screen, at that point my power went out. Upon turning the computer back on it came up with the screen That shows the windows logo and has a loading circle, let this "load" for about 2 hours before shutting the damn thing off and rebooting. It takes me back to the same screen where I proceed to give it 8 hours, finally it takes me to a screen that says administrator and has another loading circle, I have now been on this screen for an additional 8 hours. I have no Idea what to do at this point, I have tried to reinstall windows from a DVD and from a USB but for some reason it tells me to insert actual boot media, I have tried multiple different win 7 and 10 isos on dvds and usbs and none will work. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I fear this os is slowly taking my sanity. Thanks.

Last night I was using my XPS w12 in laptop mode on battery and it finally got down to 7% of capacity.  At that point it shut off the screen and I moved to my office to connect the AC adapter (thinking that it would simply turn the screen on when there was sufficient power. .  The screen never came back (I waited 15-20 minutes) but the battery was charging.  At that point I attempted a hard reset by holding the power button in the on position for 5-10 seconds.
When I tried to power up, nothing happened.  No backlit keyboard, no screen, nothing but the fan.  The light never came on in the switch either. So I tried another hard reset with the same results.  I even tried powering up with the "D" key held down for on board diagnostics and got nothing but the fan startup.
I thought it might be an overheat issue so I let it set for an hour and tried again - nothing but the fan. It appears that the laptop doesn't pass the initial diagnostics and won't even get to the point where the bios starts to load.
I truly thought my laptop was dead and ready for service.  I took it into the office the next day so I could call Dell Pro Support. Just  for giggles, I plugged it in with the AC adapter and tried to turn it on - viola!  it started working again.
I had this problem once before and it started working after 2-3 hard resets. I was working on a proposal when the laptop went down. I tried hard resets over... Read more

A:Dell XPS 12 - Won't start / power up after hard reset

OK - I've narrowed it down to the following:
When the laptop is "asleep" it eventually goes into power down mode. It appears that connecting a power adapter to the laptop at this point will cause it to go into a confused state where, when the power button is pushed,  the laptop fan comes on but no light on the power button or on the keyboard - the screen  stays blank.  The laptop fan runs (it's very quiet - you have to hold the laptop up to your ear to hear it.)
I don't know if the cause is a low battery or if the problem is simply with the state of the CPU at power down.  I just know that when it happens, it if I disconnect the power adapter and hold the power button until the laptop fan shuts off, the hard reset allows it to come back normally.  If you leave the power adapter attached, it will charge the battery but will not allow the laptop to start.
I've repeated this experiment several times with the same result every time. I'm guessing there's a bug in the BIOS that sets an error state that won't clear with the power adapter attached. Doing the hard reset without the adapter appears to clear the problem reliably.

Hi! I posted a question yesterday about how to ID a mobo b/c I had disconnected the power/reset wires on sister's desktop and did not have mobo manual. Never thought to ask how to reconnect the wires & totally bypass the mobo ID.

See picture.
There is one wide wire that is made up of 8 wires that are divided into groups of two. Wires are labeled (starting from the left)
1st group of wires: white& black – labeled “POWER SW”
2nd group of wires: white& orange – labeled “RESET SW”
3rd group of wires: white& yellow – labeled “H.D.D. LED”
Then a single white wire –not labeled
The last wire - a single green wire –not labeled

See picture for pins & table
There are 9 metal pins sticking out of a small, black, plastic rectangle with 10 holes.
The top row has 4 pins w/ the vacant hole being the last one on the right.
The bottom row has 5 pins

Then on the mobo there is a small corresponding table to the left of the pins:
Right above the table on the left, the text reads “SW1”
1-3, H.D.D LED
2-4, SUS-LED
5-7, RESET
6-8, PWR-SW

There is also a pic of the power/reset buttons on the front of the tower.

Thanks in advance for any help!

When I tried u charge n turn on  its asked me power on password. And I tried all the password I remember  nt all failed . Can anyone help me please . Kind regards Jimmy

A:Please help me to reset power on password hp 2140energy star

Hi, Unfortunately,  business machines have more stringent security than consumer models - they don't produce 'halt codes', the password cannot be derived from the Serial No. and the code is stored in non-volatile memory so removing the RTC cell will not reset the password in this case. If you Contact HP Business support they should be able to send you a customised SMC.bin file which you can use at boot to reset the password. Regards, DP-K

I haven't had any problems with my Lenovo Z50-70 laptop - until this week. One day I couldn't turn on the laptop; I found that I have to do a hard reset (remove battery, hold the power button, put battery back in). However, now I have to do a hard reset to turn on my laptop every time I switch it off or even sleep/hibernate. Not only it takes time, but I am afraid that one day it just won't work.I am travelling until August, so I have no way to send or leave the laptop anywhere to get it fixed. Is there anything I can do myself?

Desktop Pc : Dell XPS 8300
Operating System: Win 7 Professional
Total 6 port, 2 External Port on the top of CPU, probably 4 on the back.

Problem: Usally my seagate external hard drive is attached to the top second port always. On a nice morning, 2 day back I got a message from the system tray (after system comes off from night sleep) that " USB mass storagedevice has exceeded the power limits of its hub port". After I close the window (in a hurry), I could not able to activate that port, but power is coming to the ext. device if attached but not recognised by the system. The port next to it, is working fine.
My dell phone support system could not solve the problem, now his engineer will make a visit, don't know what he will do.
Clue: One interesting thing i have found under universal serial bus controller, that one drive named "USB Mass storage device " always remains at present, however, if I attach the external device to left USB port, another "USB Mass storage device " drive is created and is removed when I detach it. But this is not the case for the faulty one.
Request: How can I reset my faulty port to come back active. please help,

Best Regards
Raj

A:Reset of USB port after probable power surge

Try this, shut down the PC, unplug the power cord for the power supply from the wall outlet. Now press the power on button on your case and hold it for a couple of seconds. The power Led should lite up briefly and then fad out. Now plug the power cord back in and power up normally. With a little luck the USB port will be working again. I've gotten that same message on my PC and the above procedure fixed it for me.

I have been having problems with my system freezing - some programs may still run (the system clock will freeze but a sidebar gadget showing the time in scotland will show the correct time, my downloads may also continue and when i have to do a hard reset? the raid may have to be rebuilt).

It seemed to be random but i noticed that most of the freezes were occurring when i was installing programs and to a lesser extent when i was trying to control the computer with realvnc.

at first i thought it was a hard drive problem (i had a stripe raid as the system drive) or the cables connecting them. (i swapped cables).

i thought maybe i had faulty cables and a crash had broken system files as my raid was a stripe.

i reformatted everything and configured the raid stripe to a raid mirror and reinstalled everything - still crashing.

i removed drive 0 - drive 1 would crash. removed drive 1 and drive 0 would crash.

This problem has been happening for a few months now. When I try to turn on my computer using the power button located on the front of the case, I hear the fan running but my monitor's status light is just blinking; nothing on the screen. At that point I press the hard reset button on the front of the case and then it boots up normally, with the BIOS screen and everything. This happens about 90% of the time; the other 10% it boots up fine. How can I make it so my PC boots up properly when I press the power button?

I know I shut down the PC every night by going to the Start menu and choosing shut down. Any help would be appreciated.

A:PC won't boot up with power button; reset needed

See that the connector for the Power Switch is plugged in properly to the M/B pins.

If possible, replace the Power Supply with a working one to verify if it's a faulty PSU.

Appreciate some help.

Have an HP empty case (XT 936 Pavilion) in which would like to place a used mainboard and other components. The used mainboard came with a Compaq Presario 5360. (AMD Athlon 450MHZ)

Installed the Compaq mainboard in the HP case, and everything fit like a glove. The Power/Reset switch connector is one piece with a series of 4 pins and 3 pins respectively.

Well, the darn power switch on the HP case will not turn on the power supply. Tested the power supply, and it works, but if the power switch connector from the HP case is used, it is no-go.

Any ideas of how to get this case to work with the Compaq mainboard? Read about rigging the momentary power switch, but not clear as to how this is done.

Thanks in advance for the help.

A:Front Panel Connectors (Power/Reset)

The pinouts for the one piece connector is probably different from one motherboard to another. It's pretty easy to take the wires out and move them around.

Yes, pulling the plug on any router should not erase any of its settings. You would have to use the reset switch to clear the settings or the option within the router menus to restore it to factory defaults.

OK, it's a Acer Aspire 9300. Someone brought it to me, they thought the battery had died and bought a new one. So I discovered that Acer doesn't really have anyway to calibrate a battery...either know with a new battery you really shouldn't have to. So the situation is that if I take the new battery out, and unplugged the AC Adapter, help the power button for 20 seconds like the acer website says to...plug in the ac power and its fine. I put in the new battery and press power, nothing. Plug in the ac power and it boots up, but...device manager sees the battery, I try to open power management and acer has this thing called eManagement and stuff that's supposed to help with these things and then I get an error message saying index is out of range...I'm at a loss and the acer website to even email their technical support isn't working. any suggestions would be great.

A:Power Reset and Battery Calibration Problems

uninstall all acer power management software. just look what the windows will tell you about battery. the battery assembled with bq2085 battery controller. it's quite smart and it will do all work for you

Can I use 45 Watt adapter for dell inspiron 15 5559?? I got the adapter along with the laptop when I bought it. But a warning is displayed on screen prompting me to use 65 Watt adapter... If so why 65 Watt adapter wasn't given with the laptop instead of 45 Watt?

A:Power adapter

Hi SUSMI,
The system is designed to support both 45W and 65W adapters - see the specifications here - http://dell.to/2fhPLIf
When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

I bought a Dynex USB 2.0 4-Port Hub last week and have decided to add an external power supply to power the hub. The short and terse User Manual notes on the final page that a 5Volt / 2.5 Amp Power Adapter may be connected. I called their customer support number and talked to a lady, but her best advice was return to the store and ask there. My experience with this store over the years has been fat chance for this kind of request. Has anyone got a suggestion as to where I can purchase such a USB Power Adapter?

A:USB Hub Power Adapter

Radio Shack would be a good place to start although you might have to get one of their adjustable models. A Google search should also turn up something. Actually I just replaced my D-Link powered USB1 hub with a USB2 model. The old one is just sitting around and it has a 5V 2.4A adapter. If you want it so you can use the adapter just PM me and I'll send it to you.

I recently bought a replacement power adapter for my dell e1505. The computer works but it won't charge the battery and tells me that since the computer does not recognize the charger, I need to reseat the power adapter... What does that mean?

A:Power Adapter

Hello aaronbaron,

Reseat the power adapter just means make sure the power adapter is plugged in good on the laptop and the wall outlet. I would try powering off the laptop, unplug the power cord, take the new battery out. Reinstall the new battery only and try to power on the computer. If that does not work plug in the power cord and power up with the new battery installed.

I have a Toshiba Satellite C655D that needs a replacement ac power adapter, when I look it up it says I need:

Laptop AC Adapter: 19 Volts, 75 Watts, 3.95 Amps, 5.5mm x 2.5mm Connector

or

Laptop AC Adapter: 19 Volts, 65 Watts, 3.42 Amps, 5.5mm x 2.5mm Connector

Someone gave me a new, in the box AC Adapter with USB port, made by Insignia.
The documentation says "converts 120v AC to 3-12v with 1300mA max output."

I realize this is a question not exactly hardware related, but I'm hoping someone knows the answer....I'm afraid to plug it in and fry my laptop
