Computer 'Pop' Accident Voltage change

Q: Computer 'Pop' Accident Voltage change

Hi, my computer (IDell Dimension 5150) was having problems booting, it would lag at the last bar of the BIOS loading screen. After a while, it wouldn't turn on, a flashing amber light which meant that there was a power source but wasn;t reaching it internally, and the suggestion from the manual was to check voltage. I reallly regret it now but I was in a hurry and i was playing around with the voltage switch and changed it from 230 to 115 and I heard a pop noise and now the Green LED light isn't on anymore and computer won't boot. I don't smell anything funny so I hope it's ok. I really need the computer so if you guys could help out, Thanks heaps.

A:How do i change the voltage to DDR

Should be an option in your BIOS to increase voltages. Don't go mad with increasing it though or you'll just blow the RAM. Just do a single increment at a time.

How many sticks of RAM/how much RAM do you have? You could try removing some sticks so you only have 2GB in.

Hi everybody,
i have just started over clocking and so far i have done my video card, and a bit of my cpu. however, i cant seem to get the fsb to 200 which i should. everytime i change it to 200 in the bios and i restart, the computer turns on, but the monitor turns off. i am assuming this is due the insufficent voltage. so my question to you is, how can i change the voltage if there is no setting in bios, and is there a program that supports amds that i can download to tweak the voltage. thanks.

A:How do i change the voltage of my cpu???

In the bios there should be a setting for cpu voltage, usually called "vcore" or "vcpu." Don't increase it too much, and watch your cpu temperatures.

I currently just got new ram from Crucial and I am not sure how to change the voltage setting on the ram. Here is what they said to me in the email:

"The replacement modules you will be receiving incorporate a new chip build,
which operates at a lower voltage than the modules you are returning. The
original Ballistix modules operated at 2.2 volts, while the newer build only
requires 2.0 volts. Please make sure this adjustment is made in your system BIOS
prior to using the new modules. The latency timings have not changed."

How do I change the settings to incorporate the new ram voltage needed?

Hi,

I have a problem. In MSI Afterburner even when I enable the voltage control and restart I can't enter a voltage or use the slider. Does anyone know what my problem is? I am using the latest afterburner 1.5.1 and nvidia forceware 186.18.

Why are you changing the voltage anyway. Unless you're watercooling your card you definately shouldnt be doing that.

I have a Gigabyte AM2 motherboard (ga-ma69g-s3h)
I used to have an option to change the cpu voltage with my old dual core 5000+ cpu.
with this cpu, that BIOS option is gone!
furthermore, I can change the voltage through gigabytes windows utility (easytune 5), but then when I also try to change the multiplier in windows it doesn't change anything and the speed of the cpu remains the same.
I'm stuck at stock voltage and 3.3GHz overclock (which is not bad but since it can get to 3.7ghz I'm missing out).

Hello!
My computer suddenly started to crash alot almost a week ago and now it crashes sometimes before windows starts loading. After almost a week of testing and reading my theory is that the power supply to the RAM memory has went crazy. However the problem is that the BIOS gives me no option to change RAM voltage (guess it's a warranty thing). So how should I fix this? Is it possible to reset these things or make the computer search the right vaues again?

Because what's strange with my "theory" is how the RAM voltage settings suddenly changed. Can it also be so that the hardware is destroyed? What should I replace then?

My motherboard is a Fujitsu Siemens MS-7450VP.

Thanks in advance!
/Albert

i had 4gb or ram but then i added another 4 to make 8gb or ram, but i am getting bsod. how do i change the voltage to match the ram?

A:bios voltage change

Are the RAM sticks the same make and model? Are they the same voltage. Mismatched RAM sticks will always cause BSOD's. It's very important to get matching memory.

Does anyone know how I can change the latency and voltage settings on a Gigabyte motherboard?

I have a pair of TWINX XMS3200C2PT memory modules in dual channel on a Gigabyte GA-8IG1000 Pro-G motherboard and I want to find out how and where I can change the latency setting to 2-3-3-6 and the DDR voltage settings to 2.65. I've tried looking for it in CMOS/BIOS set-up and couldn't find it anywhere. I have this problem with my PC as it reboots durring encoding or playing games.

Your help and advice would be much appriciated.

A:How to change the latency and DDR voltage settings

in the bios screen mostly just press "ctrl - F1" but your manual/manufacturer's site 'll give you the exact details for your specific motherboard.

Hello, I'm new to this forum and I'm really down. The good news -- I ordered a Gateway SX2802-03 last week and received it today in the mail. I was really anxious to set the computer up and see how Windows 7 is. I followed the quick setup instructions that came with the computer, step by step. I plugged in the mouse, keyboard, monitor, and internet connection. I then followed the instructions and plugged in the power cord.

The bad news -- As I did this, there was a loud "pop" and the electrical breaker was switched off at the main power box. My heart sank to my knees. I knew the computer was "dual voltage", but did not know, and was not instructed, to change the voltage setting on the backside. In hindsight, because the instructions didn't indicate to be careful and be sure to move the voltage switch from 110 to 220 (or visa versa) I may have thought that it was auto-sensing/auto-switching. Anyway, what a bummer. BTW, I'm a contractor for the US government in Germany where we have 220 voltage.

OK, now my question -- I know something really bad happened; I just don't know how bad. Did only the transformer blow (which is easy to replace) or did more expensive items get fried. What really got affected? Is the computer a total loss?

Anyway, I look forward to your response and thanks in advance.

I'm moving to England from America soon, and I'd like to take my computer with me. It's a Dell Inspiron One19, an all-in-one type PC. It doesn't have a voltage switch on the back. However, in the documentation for it on Dell's website, it says "voltage 100-240" (http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/InsOne19/en/cs/index.htm#Power). Does that mean my computer will handle any voltage between 100 and 240 without needing it switched, and that it'll be fine as it is since England's voltage is 230? I've used my laptop in England before without any kind of switch, but I've heard that's only because power supplies for laptops do the switching automatically. Thanks for any help.

By Accident I Unplugged My Computer while it was on and now i am worried that my movie files will be corrupted...they seem to play fine...but i am still worried....please could somebody please help by telling me if any of my files will become damaged...thank you

A:By Accident I Unplugged My Computer While It Was On

Unless the files were open and being played or saved at the time of the power loss, there should be no damage.

But remember that power can do out at any time and hard disks die without warning (quite often, these days), so all your important data must be backed up. Since you are so worried it would suggest you have no backup plan. Maybe time to get one?

As an example I backup all new data every day, to a second and totally separate hard drive, then all data to DVD every week. Every DVD is "verified" to ensure that no files are corrupt in the copy process.

I can't have it hook up to my printer or my speakers.  What am I doing wrong? Or what else do I need to do?  When I go to the icons in the bottom right corner of my toolbar and select to have the bluetooth icon show icons and notifications, it says this notification icon is not currently active. It will be shown the next time it becomes active.  I have even restarted my computer and it doesn't seem to work.

How could i find the voltage of the pc because i need to know if it works with 220v too because i do not want to have to use a transformer if i dont have to since they significantly shorten the life if not chosen correctly. (I have experienced this with my old TV that started to take forever to turn on and showed odd screens and random colors before fully turning on) Is it possible for me to just get a new psu that is 220v if my current one is not free voltage? If so, where can i get one like that?

I am a techincian for a computer lab and months ago before (till now) some of the computers in my lab (6 out of 30) were out of order. The computers are equipped with PIII CPU and bought two years ago. They went out with the same condition: Work well before, but after several reboot (don't know how many times, it is random), the computers cannot boot up. With power on, power adapter fan on, but no sound beep at the startup, black display in monitor. After check by vendor, they said some CPU and motherboard are out of order.

So, at the time I do not know what happening , I try to use "preventive methods" I can imagine on those computers that are not "infected" . I've update their bios, set it write protect, remove the harddisks (which are removable) and restart the computer several times. But some computer ( 1 of them) still go wrong and dead.

As the computers are down randomly and in a mass like this, I think it may cause by enviromental factors such as humidity or computer virus. So, I call the engineer to check the stability of power supply. He said the volatage is lower than normal, (actually don't know how much lower), and he said only high voltage would possibly cause the machines down like this.

I wonder if it is right. Actually I learn prolong low power voltage, something called brownout or sag, would cause the machine to malfunction. But don't know if it can cause the machine to down.

I do not have each computer a UPS.

I have a new custom computer.

The problem: When I try turning on the power the computer does not turn on fully but instead everything turns on for a second and shuts off.

- I tried disconnecting everything and plugging it back. Surprisngly, the computer worked and turn on fully. But when I disconnect the power plug and plug it back, and turn it on the computer does same thing. Turns on and shuts down.

- I assumed something was wrong with the power suply. I noticed that the power supply had a voltage switch to change the amount of voltage. I live in canada, so I switched it to 115 v, however when i press the power the computer did not turn on. I switched it to 330 v or soemthing around there, and the computer TURNS ON! BUT I noticed that the mouse and output screen had no power flowwing through. While it was running i switched it back to 115 v and the mouse and screen worked!?

The only way to get my computer turned on is to do the same thing switching voltage on the

A:Voltage Switch Affecting Computer Bootup :S!

congrats - you fried your system.
NEVER, change the voltage switch on the PSU to a voltage that is NOT your mains voltage. To do so can short and fry your system. If you're lucky, you have a fuse in your PSU - all you need to do is replace the PSU, if not, you have an expensive paperweight.

So i updated my bios using @bios and i restarted the computer like it instructed me to and it started this restart loop where it would bsod before windows could finish loading and i am unable to use my pc.

This issue has happened before and its because the bios update gets rid of all settings and sets eveyrthing to auto, but the guy at IbuyPower told me it has to be set at a custom voltage and timing but i am unable to restore the backup i made of the settings as they are reported as not existing anymore.

I tried calling them but the tech on the phone actually argued with me about it apparently sounds like more of a os issue but i know for a fact its a bios issue so here i am.

I have a Gigabyte p67a motherboard and 4 sticks 2gb each of supertalent ram at 1600mhz but i believe its a mislabel because my pc told me before the update that it is 1333 mhz.
the ram serial number is w1600ub2vg and it is a pc-12800 series and i set it to 1.5 volts but it still wont work.
i also have an Intel core i5 2500k going at 3.30ghz

So how do i fix this issue?

Bios does report after a few failed attempts that my issue is an overclocking/voltage issue but i dont overclock!!!

Hi, I recently got two sticks of 8 GB 1600MHz PC3-12800 DDR3 Dual-Channel 204-pin SO-DIMMs operating at 1.5 volts. However, my CPU operates at 1.35 volts. But my laptop is a 250 G2 Notebook with Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit installed as a free upgrade to the Windows 7 Pro which was already previously installed prior to the upgrade. My question is as follows:

Will the RAM's higher voltage cause my cpu's operations to be degraded or my cpu to malfunction?

Hi! firstly this is my first post so i hope i'm doing this right.

I have a win 7 computer which i suspect is infected by some kind of malware/virus

The thing is that the computer name and local network name has changed from my deafault name to "9Aorka5", unfortunately i can't find anything about this specific name on the internet, since i also have to login to user acc on computer boot while this has been automatic before.
Possible infection (if likely) when restoring mbam clean since i was unable to launch either tuneup utilities or adobe reader after cleanup, altough infection from pdf-file is also possible (but unlikely since files were scanned with avg without any warnings)
Windows defender was also unactive (noticed when computer name was already changed), upon activating defender and running full scan no threats was found either

Full scan using avg free is finished without any threats and full mbam scan in safemode without network is currently ungoing, i've never seen this kind of problem before so i need help.

Once again i'm new to the forum and have tried to supply all i've tried and figured out so far, and thank you so much in advance!

A:Suspecting infection, computer name change (and netbios change "9Aorka5")

once your scan is done with Mbam, please post the log then perform the following:Please download TDSSKiller exe version to your desktop.Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.Click on Change Parameters and click Detect TDLFS File System.    Click the Start Scan button.    Do not use the computer during the scan    If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.    If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.    Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.    Note: If Cure is not an option, Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.    A TDSSKiller text file would be saved in Local Disk C.    Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

I started with problem here: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-8/1089279-solved-video-hang-up-new.html which I think was handled well.

In the process of installing the new hardware, a couple concerning things happened. I had a tough time getting the 24 pin PSU-mb connector in and I feared damaging the connector on the mb side. I also had trouble with routing the SATA power supply cords to the hard drives, and had to pinch the connectors pretty tight against the wires they were connected to to squeeze them through parts of the frame inside. They are not squeezed in their connected position however.

But everything seemed to work great for a while. Both my new video card and PSU seemed to help my system. But after a while I started noticing things were getting slow, clicks not registering, any web browser locking up frequently. The problem got a little worse over time and now things load incredibly slow, though when they load they can run smoothly for a bit of time and then abruptly freeze again. Startup often takes a minute and shutdown can take sometimes more then 10. I often have to press the power button on the case due to a locked up program and then wait a very long time.

I checked my sensors with 2 different programs and they both show me consistently getting 2.128 volts on the 3.3 rail. I went back to my old vid card to see if the problem was the new one all along, no luck. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting all the PSU connectors, still no luck.

For the record: I am Win98 and ME certified and knowledgeable with DOS.
I am a 'shift-del' freak and was cleaning my desktop, 3 weeks ago and accidentally included my coin logs(I've been working on these for 3.5 years). Being an XP user and knowing XP doesn't use DOS, I thought there was no chance of getting them back; I just found out I was wrong and with the proper tools I can. I never did this before, but so need to. Please help.

UPDATE: A friend referred me to "recuva" yoake a recovery, of about 15 files(MSWord), I got back 2 and one was my buff(buffalo coin) logs. However later I discovered;both files will not open. Windows says, "word cannot find compressor for..." I'm clueless here. Plus after choosing to unhide all files and folders, I ran into 2 files that have the names I lost; but they begin with "~$", only have 1K and the icon is light colored. What is this? Any chance of recovery nof these 4 and others.?

I'm using windows XP and in network connections I accidently deleted my lan connection icon. (I know that sounds goofy) Then the recycle bin got emptied before I could restore it Since I am using DSL I obviously need this, but it will not even detect the hardware to make a new connection. I've spent hours trying to figure this out, and read everything about LAN in the microsoft help and support.
please help!

a few days ago, I went to the "safely remove hardware" icon and clicked "stop" on the USB Port option.

Today, when I tried to get photos onto my comp by inserting the memory chip into the SD/mini/MMC/RS and the computer wouldn't reconize it. I went to my computer and checked to see if the icons, and none were there.

I tried restarting my comp, but that didn't help.

How do I retrieve the hardware?

A:[SOLVED] Accident

Remove the SD/mini/MMC/RS docking bay and the reinsert it into your PC, this is assuming that the device you inserted the memory chip into is connected through USB.

When I was reformatting my computer i deleted a part of my drive that i think was really important. It was drive E:. After the reformatting I tried to go on the internet. I tried to go on wireless but, I didn't have a wireless internet icon for my wireless card so I plugged it in. Still i could not go on the Internet. Then I tried to open some programs and half of them would load the others I would get error reports from.
I think the reason it doesn't work is because of the drive I accidently deleted. Is there any way that I could get the data back without taking it to a repair shop? Thanks for any help. Oh and I cant put my laptop on standby either.

Hello-I have a windows xp (version 2002) Asus EeePC and I think I might have downloaded a virus accidentally whilst on a music radio website. I found that it messed up my internet browser and it would directly open to a website called "partner12.mydomainadvisor.com" Please advise what I should do to clean this up! I have changed the default from the wierd website to "google.com" but it still will default to this website "partner12..." if the domain name does not exist. i used to have norton antivirus but the subscription ran out and i did not renew...I know I should probably get something to protect my computer as well from now on. Hi everyone.

I am having a very similar issue as OP, but I "accidentally" [STUPID ME.....] did diskpart/clean (only clean) on a remote HD (149Ghz size with no partition on it).

I am still reading through this thread and hopefully I will be able to recover my data on this remote HD. I have been using TestDisk, EaseUS partition recovery to scan (only quick scan so far) w/o any luck yet. At this moment I am running Partition Recovery quick scan now. Since I do not have any partition on this HD, I am not sure if I am doing the right thing.... I only store pictures (tons of them) and some docs on it. I am on Page 9 of this thread, I will keep reading and trying.

Thanks in advance for helping me,
Lucy

Cant do anything on computer
using a different laptop right now

I was in regedit trying to delete an instant savings app that had found its way into my computer. I believe i was in Local_Users and i know i went to the software folder. I accidentally deleted the software folder and I couldnt use any programs. I couldnt use a system restore because it gave me an error so i decided to reboot and go into safe mode and do it there but it didnt work. I have been trying to figure all of this out with windows technicians and didnt get anywhere. I cant do anything on my broken computer because when i boot it up, it skips the boot menu and i cant get it into safe mode or anything. it goes straight to the lock screen and I cant read any texts and can only put in my password. After I put in the password, it gives me a black screen for a few seconds with a blue spinning wheel on my mouse and it goes back to the lock screen. My idea was to load the cd I have with the win8 pro back onto my computer and that would reset the registry but I dont know how to do this because I cant do any functions on my pc at the moment. any help would be great. Sorry for all the bad writing, I am trying to finish a lot of homework and figure out this problem at the same time.

Thank you,
Alex

Hi all,

I'm not pc savvy at all so this message comes with a tad bit of panic!

My mother accidently hit "log off" instead of restart using windows XP. Now she gets a blue screen that says "Welcome" on the left and my family's name with a chess board icon on the right. There's a button on the bottom that says "turn off family computer". We cannot get to the desk top no matter what we try. We can only shut it down. We think she hit log off-- since it's a family computer we never use this function. Can anyone tell me how to get back to the desktop? (she's quite upset because we're not sure what happened exactly, and not sure what to do)

ANY help or suggests are welcome! Thanks much!

Welcome to TSF.

That's not good. That's the main reason we tell users not to use this program on their own since it can cause damage. Do you have an older log of what you had before you did the fixes? If not, tell us what you fixed if you can remember.

Post your new log you have now and we'll take a look at it. What firewall program are you using?

I accidentally downloaded the incorrect student version from Digital River. I meant to go with the 64 bit but installed the 32 bit. I'd already done the install before I realized my error. I contacted Digital River and they are refunding my money for the 32 bit purchase. I have since purchased the 64 bit version but can't figure out how to install it. I'm getting an error message when I try to do the install. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I'm pretty confused right now.

Hello, I recently purchased Dell XPS 8700 that came with a 2tb harddive formatted with GPT. The computer came with Windows 8, and I wanted to downgrade to Windows 7. However the windows installer wouldn't install on any of the current partitions, so I deleted every partition with gParted and proceeded to install Windows 7 successfully onto the one giant partition. Since I deleted all the GPT partition information (Idiotically), I am unable to make more partitions and dual boot.

So my questions are: Is my harddrive as of right now in MBR or GPT? And how would I add the GPT partitions back, as in the primary and secondary GPT headers?

Edit: I am attempting to dual boot with Xubuntu 14.04 and Windows 7 Professional, both 64bit and the computer has the UEFI, I think. Am I better off using MBR or GPT to dual boot? I only want two OS's and a shared data partition.

A:Deleted all the GPT Partitions by accident

Quote:

Deleting all GPT partitions is a recommended step to downgrade "Windows 8" as "Windows 7" is known to not much liking GPT based UEFI boot mode. Although "Win 7" 64 bit edition may boot from a GPT disk, i prefer MBR partitioning especially in case of dual booting with Linux. The only mistake you made here is not to partition the disk at the time of install. Fortunately you can split the single large "C" partition to two or three small partitions with the help of "Partition Wizard" free edition.
Download link : Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition.
What you need to do is first shrink/resize "C" and create one or more new partitions using the free space.

I have a 2TB external hard drive and a 1TB external hard drive.
I got a new 2TB internal hard drive and was installing Windows on it.
On the screen where it showed the connected drives, I stupidly forgot the 2 external drives were still connected. I thought somehow it was breaking up the new 2TB internal drive into 3 separate partitions. I clicked on the two external drives and deleted the partitions because I thought it would merge them. I DID NOT format luckily.
I am in the middle of running the Analyzer using TestDisk on the 2TB external. Since it is a 2TB hard drive, it is analyzing about 10% of the disk per day. So I guess it will take 10 days to finish. Small price to pay if I can recover all the data on these drives. One has all our home movies and photos and the other has all our scanned documents in PDF format. Sigh.
I am wondering if I am doing this the right way with TestDisk? Is there a faster way? When I deleted the partitions, the process took less than a second. The drives were partitioned to used 100% of the drive space. I read the page TestDisk Step By Step but still not sure if there isn't an easier way for my particular blunder. Nothing should be corrupted. Just deleted.
Thank you!

A:Deleted Partitions By Accident Please Help

Yes it should be faster. I thought there were two levels to the restore deleted partitions and only the deeper level involves scanning the surface for old deleted partitions.

I was curious as Malwarebytes, MSE, and even ESET didn't find anything like this, while SUPERAntiSpyware found adware but not these, though I'm not too sure: but I brought up start task manager and looked under processes and found two that weren't under my user name (just so you know, under "users" it's just me), and after looking them up on google, learned that they might be trojans. They are: csrss.exe, and winlogon.exe. Well, that last one isn't really a trojan, but wasn't under my user name so I brought it up here just in case.

I don't want to get in trouble, as I need to do some accounting-related stuff soon n my comp., so I need to know if they are trojans or not, and if they are, how to get rid of them right away. Any ideas, and could there be more? (Again, Malwarebytes, MSE, SUPERAnti and ESET didn't pick this up)

Having not joined, my wife attempted it but ended up creating a new homegroup on the new build. So how do I delete the new homegroup created, so I can join my established group?

What you need to do is remove each computer from the new homegroup.

Once you've done that, the homegroup will no longer exist, leaving you free to rejoin your original homegroup.

Hi,
I was going to check if my external HDD needed to be defragged. I was in the wee window that asks about checking the disk for errors and decided to do that, there's always two options, one is always automatically ticked and there's another one that said something about find and attempt to restore corrupt files, that is never ticked and I never choose it, until today. All I noticed was it found 1024 files, and I clicked proceed, it processed or fixed etc and i went back to the pc after an hour and decided just to cancel as it seemed to be stuck at 2025 files checked.
Once i clicked cancel I couldn't get access to my external HDD and when I right on 'My Computer' it says it's NTFS files and is full but windows can't get access to it, i thought i'd try restoring it and i can see that out of the 1TB I have used 330GB which is what my disk was like before my mistake.
as with most people I have all my most important stuff saved there away from my C drive.
Ok, sorry for waffling on, can anyone tell me if I am able to restore my drive back to what it was (Would that have been FAT32 files?)

There is a backup copy in C:\Windows\System32\dllcache

most of the time it is compressed in this folder.

Here is a copy of it from my XP installation (uncompressed)
See attached
You will need a XP install CD and use recovery environment to copy the file to the proper place, or use an Ubuntu boot CD to do it.

Here is an article on using a Ubuntu CD to copy data off an unbootable windows PC, one could also use it to copy a file to a Windows folder.

Hello,

While I accomplished so much successfully setting up my computer in AHCI earlier, I now blew it all.

I had the SMART command failure error with my SSD, and received a new BIOS from my motherboard manufacturer. I applied it and "Loaded Optimized Defaults" in the BIOS as your supposed to. Stupid me, that means the motherboard activates IDE mode, but I installed Windows in AHCI mode.

So... I switched it back to AHCI after booting into IDE by accident and now I'm getting MBR Error. Is there any way to repair this? I have been trying to repair it through the Windows Install disk, using bootsec & command prompt to no avail.

Likely because where the screen pops up that says: "Use recovery tools that can help fix problems starting Windows. Select an operating system to repair" There's no option to select. So I elected to "Load Drivers" using iaAHCI.inf [Intel ICH10R] from the Intel RST installer (I extracted it on my Laptop). It still doesn't recognize it.
-->This is all pertaining to image 3. on the guide on the link HERE

If I HAVE to install Windows again, I have 2 storage drives installed as well, do I take them out to prevent them from being formatted? They are holding My Documents/My Pictures/My Music/My Videos etc.

Thanks!

Hello again.

You shouldn't have to reinstall, have a look at this tutorial at the link below, it shows how to enable AHCI after the OS has been installed and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

Hi all, I am new here so nice to meet you.
I have annoying problem. I was reinstalling xp and I created a new partition (not very familiar with what this means), and so now my c drive has changed its name to e. I have been to windows website none of the processes work (disk management ect), the computer just wont let me either delete the new partition or change the names of the drives. I know this is touchy buisness so I dont want to proceed until I know what I am doing.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Personally, I'd find it much easier to figure out what's going on here if I could see what Disk Manager says. You don't seem to have a very good grasp on disk terminology, so if you could take a screenshot of a fully expanded Disk Manager, (right click My Computer, select manage, on the right side of the screen choose disk management) then I can get back to you with much more specific advice.

Edit: To take a Screen shot, press print screen on your keyboard, and then paste into an image program such as paint. Save the resulting file, and then upload it to a site such as photobucket which will host the image for you for free. (You have to sign up for a free account first.) After uploading to an image hosting site, the site will provide you with several links that you can use to post the image here on this forum.

I might have erased something on regedit that is preventing me from startying any app right now. The only way to get to my web browser is through the "run" option. When ever I attempt to load something, "mozilla, explorer or any other app" I get an error message:

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.

All this is due to a stupid adware they I cannot get rid of but some help would be nice. Thanks again.

Hi.

I got an OEM version of Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit with my PC, which is capable of 64-bit.

I've read that the serial key is legal for either version, 32-bit or 64-bit, but the DVD I got only has 32-bit version.

How can I get a new DVD with the 64-bit version, as I got 8 gigs of ram and I can't use them.

I bought and built the computer myself and made a mistake when I ordered Windows, and asked for 32-bit because I was scared of compatibility, and I opened and installed it already, so I can't take it back.
Help

A:Windows OEM 32-bit bought by accident,need 64-bit DVD

You can try contacting whoever supplied you with the 32bit disc and explain your mistake... they may send you a new 64bit one... You may just have to bite the bullet and purchase the 64bit version...

Hey Guys I screwed up as follows:

I was fooling around with my graphics drivers and accidentally deleted them. A screen popped up to reboot the computer. It rebooted.

Now whenever I restart my computer, first a microsoft screen appears, then it appears to load but I have no on-screen visual as i get a monitor error message (Not Optimum Mode, Recommended 1920x1200, 60Hz), I am therefore unable to download and install any updated drivers.

What Can I do to restore my Drivers or at least get a visual to Re-install them?

I'm running Windows Vista, and one of the newer NVidia Graphics Cards.

A:Deleted Graphics Drivers By Accident

I believe you'd need to boot into safe mode in order to get the resolution down, or at least that's the easiest way I can think of. Boot into safe mode and allow as much as possible, try installing your drivers from there.

I've just come out of a grim period due to blasted KB3022345 and thanks to help from dc3 - see http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/578361/major-shut-down-problems/page-2

There had been an earlier warning that Microsoft could be hiding yet another revision of it (5th or 6th?) under KB3068708 and I was advised not to install it, but wait a few days and then check here for any bad news (sound advice, especially if you've been nobbled by KB3022345).

Many months ago I changed my settings so that updates would not be automatically - well I thought that I had. But I hadn't - I should have chosen "check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them".

Instead I'd selected "download updates but let me choose whether to install them" and the result when I shut down last night was the message "downloading1 of 9 updates - do not switch off" - I couldn't do anything to stop the updates being installed and I'm horrified that the option I'd chosen gave me no choice at all - there was no shield icon "updates are available" - they just installed presumably as part of the powering down process.

I've now got the "check for but let me choose" option in place but having seen that KB3068708 had been installed I ran sfc /scannow and the CBS log is again a huge one, 248 MB. Does the sheer size of it suggest problems (I haven't noticed any yet)?

I've put a link on the other thread so that dc3 knows what's happened.

A:Installed KB3068708 by accident - now have a huge CB log

Two signs of a problem or just a co-incidence (in which case what should I do?)?

(1) Word & Excel documents are now taking up around ten/fifteen seconds to open.

(2) When I switch off I get the message "The following programs are still running - end or force closure" or words to that effect - but there are no open programs displayed.

Hello, hope someone can help. I recently purchased a hp envy 15 with windows 8.1. I purchased office 2013 and when i opened microsoft one note i was asked for my microsoft account info. I created one, entered the information, walked away from my laptop for a bit. When i came back it was locked and my microsoft account is now my login for the computer. I do not know my password and have been unable to get it from microsoft live. What can i do to log in this is extremely frustrating that i am locked out. Thanks

A:locked myself out of hp envy 15 windows 8.1 by accident

Should be an option to "switch" accounts. Not having an HP Envy 15 I'm not sure on how to tell you to get there. I would try pressing the Windows Key + L key to lock the computer, and when you press a key to gain access, there should be an option to switch user accounts or an arrow ping back...which may or may not take you to a screen that will let you use another account to unlock the computer. Good luck.

Hey, I made a huge mistake and I just wanted to get some advice on my situation.

I recently had to send my motherboard back for testing. However when removing the heatsink and processor I wasn't sure what to do. I tried pulling the heatsink off the processor but the processor came off the socket 754 with it! Now I know I was supposed to twist the heatsink and gently pull it off and I feel a right plonker for not doing that!

I just wanted to know, what are the chances of the processor being broken by this? There doesnt seem to be any physical change to the pins, as they were pulled straight out and no bending occurred. I'm hoping that if there is any damage to the socket it will be fixedby the people I sent it to.

And one more question, when I get my motherboard back, if the computer still doesnt work, what checks can I do to see what component is faulty? Will the motherboard run on its own without any components inside? If so this would be good to see which component makes the computer not work.

Thanks for the help,
Ed

wow. you'd probably be better off getting a new board altogether.

Guy that used to work on my cousins comp is no longer available.

I was given the comp to see if I could get it going. On booting up all there was was a blue screen with an error message about there being no boot sector or something.

I wanted to do a repair so I put the cd in and hit enter when it said do a fresh install, accepted the agreement, then expected (as per directions) that I would have a choice of a new install or repair. But instead I was sitting in front of 3 partitions. I thought the obvious partition for windows to be on would be C:

I selected 'C' and then selected to install saving current files (or something like that). Other alternatives all involved format.

Next thing its doing a fresh install, I was still waiting for the chance to repair, I thought it would give me a chance to go back if I made a mistake.

After loading files the computer re-booted to continue the installation, but before continuing with the installation all these errors were repaired in 'D'. Now when I boot up i'm asked which operating system to start with a choice of 2 versions of windows XP.

First I want to know how to remove the 2nd installation. I believe just deleting the windows folder wont do it, there will still be the option of which operating system to use at start-up.

Next thing is, looking at 'D' drive. In Documents and Settings/Owner there is a folder Windows, the only thing it contains is a folder 'System' and it appears to b... Read more

Hello,

Iv got one for you....

The computer has a wired keyboard and a cordless mouse.
While trying to disable what they thought to be was a
wireless keyboard connection, they managed to disabled
both wired keyboard and cordless mouse by accident.

They cannot access f8 (safe mode) after reboot, as the
keyboard was disabled before reboot. They have tried
(both before reboot and after) to attach both a USB
keyboard and a USB mouse with no success. I'm out of
ideas and I don't have a clue what to advise them to try next...

I would really appreciate your input.

Thank You

Is there a way for me to recover the stupid idiotic mistake that I did? What I did was removed all the permissions to a partition on my HD that contains all my trading files and folders making it impossible for me to open ANY of my files on that partition. I thought I was removing the permissions for others on my network and selected the read only attribute. Then when I tried to allow full control after I realized what I did, it tells me access is denied.

So is there anything I can do to recover what I screwed up??

So a few months back I was doing stuff and I accidentally compressed the appdata files on my WIndows 8 laptop. When I decompressed them, not all of the files were returned to their normal state. The "Local" and "Roaming" files are the ones affected, and within each of those, the "Microsoft" folder is smaller than it should be. My computer can't run certain things that need licensing (Skype, Sims, Minecraft, etc). I don't have any file restore points and I don't know what to do. Please advise.
