Frustrating blank screen on secondary monitor via HDMI.

Q: Frustrating blank screen on secondary monitor via HDMI.

Hi,

I have a problem that is driving me absolutely mental. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Basically I have a Monitor (Benq G2420HD) hooked up to my laptop (Sony Vaio AR71m - Running Windows 7) via HDMI. It worked absolutely perfectly before I went away for the summer. Since coming home and, to my knowledge, having made no major changes to my computer I encountered a problem.

The monitor is recognised on my computer - it shows up in display settings and Nvidia Control Panel fine. Windows also extends the desktop to the other monitor. The monitor shows the green power light but is completely unresponsive and shows only a blank screen as if it's not turned on - I can't change the channel, bring up the menu or do anything until I unplug the HDMI cable and then the monitor works again.

I have tested my computer on another monitor and it works and I have tested my monitor on another computer and that works. At one point I thought I had solved the problem after installing an older graphics driver and and my desktop actually showed on the monitor but two minutes later it disappeared again.

I've tried countless GPU drivers (GeForce 8400 GTm), different HDMI cables and I've even formatted my hardrive and reinstalled windows but to no avail.

I've completely run out of ideas of things to try. If anyone has any suggestions please feel free.

Thanks

I have an XPS 15 9550 with 4k Touch Screen. I use it at work and hook it up to a 1980x1020 monitor via the HDMI port. Pretty standard.
However, I've noticed that once in awhile the monitor will flicker to black for about a second and then pop back up. Annoying but not frustratingly annoying. This generally only happens a few times a day, but some days it will do it like 5 times in under two minutes which is frustratingly annoying.
And even worse, sometimes it will flicker to black and just stay black. The windows I had open on my monitor will jump over to the laptop screen and I have to unplug the HDMI cable from the laptop, wait a few seconds, and then plug it back in.
This shouldn't be happening. I've thought that maybe it is because I need a 4k monitor to pair it properly, but that doesn't seem right. Besides, I'm not wanting to spend $400 quite yet.
Any idea what's going on? Do I have a bad laptop? From what I know, I've updated everything (Bios, Graphics drivers, etc.). I've tried a different monitor and a different HDMI cable - no difference. Same issue on all.

Hi all, trying to setup up a secondary monitor (LG 24MP58) for my Lenovo Yoga 900 tablet...to no avail. Everything seems to be assembled correctly, but absolutely no response from the LG. Doesn't even light up or appear to be "trying" to work. There are no physical buttons or controls of any kind, on the monitor. Win 10 generated a PnP monitor in Devices. HDMI is connected to Type-C USB port on tablet via Insignia adapter. Would eventually like to have a duplicate of my tablet screen on the LG.
Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

I'm trying to set-up two CRTs on my GeForce FX 5200. I'm using an adapter to convert DVI to VGA. The primary monitor is working fine, and secondary monitor is detected and is coming out of standby when windows starts, but it's staying blank.

I have "extended my desktop" on the second monitor, and I can tell that it has been extended because my pointer will move off screen, but I can't figure out why I'm not getting an image.

I tried switching monitors, and they both work on the normal VGA output ... any suggestion?

hello,
I've got a weird problem and couldn't find a solution for it after 5 hrs of research and trying modifications.

got an LCD TV connected to the laptop via a VGA cable it was working fine till now... (ATI raedon vidcard)

When im streaming anything on-line (eg. youtube clip, google vid etc.) i extend the screen to the tv, i click full screen and the full screen appears on the laptop screen... I did not touch any settings it just happened out of the blue.
Edit: this problem happens with flash...

It only happens when im in extend mode with the monitors (when im in duplicate or in projector mode this problem does not appear, but the thing isthat mostly i watch something on the tv and meanwhile doing my stuff on the laptop screen...)

I need and use this extension mode the most so I would very appreciate if someone could lead me to solve it...
Thanks a lot!
SOLVED IT

I disabled this file in chrome: pepflachplayer.dll and it works!

when i'm in osx and use my 24" external monitor, everything is fine, but when i'm in windows and set the resolution of my external monitor to its native 1920x1080, the edges of the screen get cut off as you can see in the pics. if i set the resolution to 1680x1050, it will fill the whole screen, but obviously i'd rather it just work like it's supposed to at 1920x1080. any ideas?

A:edges of screen are cut off on secondary monitor

Set the resolution to what you want, then push auto adjust on the monitor, try that.

And also, make sure it`s setup properly in display properties.

Hey everybody =)

I'm running a laptop with an ATI HD 5650, and I've recently purchased an LG G245H, 24" external monitor to use with it, all has been fine but today I've noticed that a fine black line will flash on the screen, sometimes in the same place, sometimes different, and its been very, very annoying. I also noticed that if I change to "Projector only' with the Windows-P shortcut the problem disappears, and event viewer is awash with errors from every few seconds from something ATI related. The log is attached, I've tried updating drivers, and also disabling DisplayFusion, but so far to no avail. My laptop primary display is completely unaffected by this also.

Hope this can be fixed!

Sounds like a problem from the software you are using. Alot of third party programs are not multi-monitor aware and just maximize to the primary.

i've got a minor issue where some apps choose to launch on the secondary screen, rather than my primary. i believe it is because my secondary is actually to the left of the primary (it is a TV that is physically to the left of me). is there a way to tell apps which screen to launch in? i'd rather have all my apps launch on the primary display.

A:dual-monitor: apps starting in secondary screen instead of primary

Vista goes screwy with this sometimes - but mostly, I have noticed, when I run WMC and it opens in the window that the app is in.

Try running WMC on your TV so that it forces the app to the other 'monitor' and then hit the start button on your KB, freeing your mouse from WMC, and then go to the other monitor and close the app(s). Then close WMC and see if the app opens back on the TV or in the monitor.

I was moving our Dell Studio 17 laptop and the screen went blank. I thought it did a power save or something. But I could not get it redisplay anything..no flickers, nothing.

I rebooted, nothing.

I opened up the back and reseated the ram and verified the hard drives were secure. I vacuumed out any dust. No difference.

So I tried using the HDMI with our TV and it displays just fine. I try to toggle the screen (function F8 on my laptop) and it makes no difference. HDMI is always shown.

In the past when we use the HDMI to display netflix movies on our TV, I hookup the HDMI and the laptop automatically switches to the HDMI display and turns off the laptop display. When I unplug the HDMI, it wouldnt turn the laptop screen back on. I would have to reboot with the HDMI disconnected for the display to come back.

Now rebooting doesnt not bring the screen back.

Anything else to try? are there settings somewhere forcing the laptop to not send info to its own screen? BIOS?

This laptop has an ATI card and uses the latest drivers. It does have the Catalyst control center where it detects the displays. It seems the 'unknown' laptop screen and TV (when HDMI is connected, the only way I can see the screen at this time)..but it calls them duplicates and calls both of them #1 display.

Thanks for the help

Hi this issue has been bugging me for a while. I have a laptop, a desktop monitor, and an HDTV. There once was a time when plugging an HDMI cord to either devices allowed me to use my laptop on a bigger screen. But somewhere along the way my laptop stopped working properly with the TV.

Now when I plug my laptop into my TV, both screen go black. I don't know how to fix it, my laptop works just fine on the monitor, and other devices work just fine on the TV as well. It seems like the problem is with the computer, but I can't figure it out. Why would it work properly with one HDMI display (desk monitor), but not the other (TV)? Again, it was working fine on either one before. I have no idea what caused the change. Please help me with this, thank you.

I previously used a Monitor and my Laptop Screen. (The Monitor was set as Primary, and the Laptop screen as Secondary. The Monitor was set to the Sub-D on the Docking Station.)

When I had the Monitor/Laptop setup -all open applications and desktop icons stayed in place. With the two monitor set up, the applications open on my Secondary Monitor move to the Primary after Waking Up, and the Desktop icons on my Primary shift around. (I have to drag everything back...)

Hi guys,
Hoping you'll be able to help me with a really strange problem that has me stumped.
My current setup is:
4gb Ram
Pentium i5
Gigabyte P55-Us3L motherboard.

Up until recently I had an 8800GT graphics card. Using the DVI output and an adapter for DV>HDMI cable running into my HDTV. I also had an audio jack running from my rear speaker slot into my HDTV for audio. All worked fine, no problems.

Anyway recently the fan on the 8800GT broke and I bought a 9800GT to replace it.
This card has a DVI output and a HDMI output, so I decided to just use a normal HDMI cable, set up the card and plugged everything in and I get both video and audio, so I know the hardware configuration is correct.

However, often when I go to start a new audio process (i.e. watch a youtube video or start playing a game) the audio will not play and I will have no more audio until I restart my comp. This seems to happen at random and never in the middle of a task, i.e. I don't lose audio while playing a game but if I quit the game and watch a youtube video the audio never plays and I have no sound on my computer at all.
Now this was actually bearable as due to the randomness I would often get my video file or game working with sound just by restarting, but recently I installed Dawn of War 2. The first time I played it I had audio but now I can never get audio when playing it and again it stops all audio on the computer til I restart. This is the only time it has ever happene... Heya. I recently (for Christmas) received a new LOGIK monitor to accompany my old one and I'm having problems getting them both to run correctly. My old monitor used to be using a VGA cable with a DVI adapter at 1920 x 1080, where it worked fine. I plugged in my new monitor with a HDMI cable with a DVI adapter, however upon doing so, the resolution of the older screen was reduced to 1440 x 900 (or something like that) and my new monitor became fuzzy, as in, everything is out of focus and the colours seem dark / unnatural. I've tried using a HDMI cable with the older monitor, where I can get 1920 x 1080, however it too becomes fuzzy. I tried to use the VGA in my old monitor as that worked previously, but no longer does. The screens have their proper aspect ratios (dot to dot, full, whatever you want to call them) and are not using overscan. Sometimes I am able (after hours of playing with CCC and windows control panel) to make one of them display correctly, however after restarting it returns to being fuzzy. All of the cables are connected securely and my drivers are up-to-date (as of 01/01/14). I'll attach a screenshot for further reference (currently i'm just using 1 screen as I had to borrow the second HDMI cable - I'll be getting another in about a week). I've been browsing a wide number of forums for about a week now and cannot seem to get it to work. Sorry if I'm being vague, if there's any more information you need don't hesitate to ask. Thanks.

A:New monitor with hdmi giving a fuzzy screen.

Something that's just occured to me - should this thread be moved to Hardware and Devices? Only, I'm not sure whether the problem is with the graphics card, the cable, the monitor(s), the drivers or windows. :S

When viewing the Dell Optiplex 9030 specifications, it states that the device can be used as an external display for other devices, via its HDMI input.
I have followed the instructions given in the link below to link-up a MacBook Air as a video input, using HDMI. One user in the thread below says they have successfully done this, although it is not working on my machine.

When I switch the display from "PC" to "HDMI" using the OSD (On Screen Display) buttons it only shows a black screen, although my MacBook Air detects that it is connected to the Dell Optimax 9030, and adjusts its settings accordingly. On the Optimax 9030, the question-mark below where it says "HDMI" on the OSD disappears, but no signal is displayed on the screen.
Can anyone please explain a workaround to this problem?

I need help for my 2 monitors I'm not sure what's up with one of them.
On the left I use (DVI to VGA) and the right monitor, my main one I use (mini HDMI to HDMI)
This one, the main one displays 'no signal' I've been using it for a couple months no problem working fine and a couple of days ago while on my computer it just displayed 'no signal' while my monitor on the left (vga) stayed on working perfect.
But the computer recognized the monitor still being visible as I can move things to it and when I access it on 'chrome remote desktop' on my phone you can see that it's still being displayed (picture attached below) click here and the other pic below is what I see irl, sorry for the bad lighting it's late here.
Anyway I'll get the simple suggestions out of the way
-Yes it is selected as 'HDMI' on the monitor.
-Yes the HDMI cable works as it works with my PS4 and the PS4 Hdmi cable also tested on it with no results
-Yes the monitor works, I plugged in the VGA and it displays, I also plugged in the PS4 over hdmi and it displays my PS4 no problem
- And I also replaced the 'mini hdmi adapter' and that hasn't fixed it.
So any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.

August, I attached a new SOYO 17" flat panel (DYLM017A) to what was to become my wife's computer and used it to set up our home network. After 3 or 4 weeks it began to flicker, change brightness. Then in mid October it failed. At first it would startup just fine, but in a few minutes the screen would go blank. I checked all connections, cables, etc. I attached an old CRT monitor to the computer and all worked just fine. I replaced 17" flat panel from WALMART. But...

The point of this long narrative is that I now have $160 in a flat panel that doesn't work (Neither Tiger or Soyo will accept a return). I strongly suspect that the backlight is broken. How can I tell if if it really is the backlight. Does anyone know if SOYO uses cold-cathode tubes. Can these be replaced? Is this a repair I might attempt?

Going to device manager and "Turning off" the monitor is not possible. You have either disabled the GPU or uninstalled the drivers.

Hi

I was wondering if anyone can help with the following symptoms.

My PC has a Gigabyte Socket A Gigabyte GA-7ZMMH motherboard with a 900Mhz AMD Duron processor. It has a seperate graphics card (not sure of the make/model) but it is old. The operating system is Windows 98.

When I switch the computer on nothing at all appears on the screen (which does not come out of standby mode), not even the POST screen. The PSU and CPU fans activate and a green light on the motherboard lights up. The hard drive kicks in as well.

I have tried/tested the following steps.

The monitor/leads tested and work fine on another system.
The PC still does not work when connected to another monitor
New battery in the motherboard.
Graphic card tried in another system and works ok.

Any troubleshooting suggestions or idea's gratefully received.

Thank you

Hi

Things that are left

Make sure everything is clean. Not tons of dust

Try the video card again to make sure it's fitting OK in its slot and there is not a lot of corrosion on the contacts.

Disconnect everything except video card and monitor, RAM,
CPU/heatsink/fan

RAM Take the chips out and reseat them. If you have 2 chips try one at a time Try it on another system or try chips from a working system in the problem one. (Make sure that it's the same type)

When I boot-up my computer, it takes about 2 seconds longer for the monitor to turn on then usual, and right before the log-in screen the display will disappear, and stay off. The PC continues working normally, as far as I can tell.

What precluded this issue? Why, I haven't the foggiest. Windows update isn't set to automatic, and I hadn't updated any programs/software etc. in two weeks.

Timeline of Events
3.24, morning: PC booted up fine.
3.24, evening: 6 hour car ride with PC in box, cushioned by clothing, buckled in.
3.24, later in evening: Upon boot-up, issue was first discovered

Here's what I've been doing to try to rectify the issue;
-Did a clean install of the newest graphics driver, twiceBoth times, upon restart after installation, PC booted up normally, but I got constant 'The display driver has stopped responding and recovered' notifications.
As well, upon shutting down the computer, the next time it booted the original issue returned, and I had to boot into safe mode to use it.

-Restore the system to it's 3-21 statusWhen viewing the prompt to let me do this, I was there had been no changes between that restore point and present day. The system restore was unsuccessful.
-Tested the original cables with an older CRT monitorSame result, the monitor blanked before the log-in screen.

-Updated and ran malwarebytes and MSEThey didn't find any issues

-Went into msconfig, disabled all startup processes, and restarted the PCAgain, monitor went blank before ... Read more

Hi HannahH and welcome to sevenfourms.

When did this problem start? Did you do any updates or install any new hardware or software?

Is this the built in graphics or is it a graphics card? If so the type of graphics card installed?

Hi

I'm not sure but I think my monitor is dead, thought I'd post on here to see why you guys think since you quite obviously know more than me.

It's a 19" black Reliyss monitor (used in the UK) with both dvi-d and ... umm ... the blue connection VGA?.

The problem was one night after it went onto powersave mode, I went back to it after my dinner and found although the screen was black the monitor light was green like it was on. I moved the mouse about, pressed a couple of keys but alas no picture. I went to switch the monitor's on off button off but it doesn't seem to do anything. I switched off the computer and back on again, same black screen and green light. I unplugged the monitor from the mains plug, left it over night - same, left it for a week - same.

I was playing about with the psu of my spare computer (linked with the white dvi-d cable to monitor) and I can't help thinking it might be because of this. Is it possible I blew something in the monitor and it never went to powersave? I've tried it with another power lead and it's the same story black with green light.

I was hoping there was a quick fix I could do but sadly I think it's hand in pocket time for a new monitor

Cheers in advance
Gogz

Hi Every one at Tech spot, I came here seeking knowledge & Help..(hopefully)..
I always tried customizing my pc by winging it myself half of the time. Until this time I have I Blank Screen?

This is how it happened, two days ago, I was editing a dvd menu in the sonic program, when I was done with the file, I sent the file to process for the dvd. Suddenly my pc goes out, no power, noi nothing, with a screen blank and everything? wow.. So I go a little crazy, It must be the power supply I thought, right? Well I find an ac or dc cord and change it, then the power is back on. Yeah.. But my screen is still blank?why?

I go to the store and by a new graphics card, install it, and still a blank screen, I took out all my ram and left one in.. Still nothing, checked for smells and damage nothing!!
PLEASE HELP!!!
PLEASE!!!
I'm so confused..:blackeye:

Well, it can be plenty of things, with the motherboard or monitor being a suspect as well. Do you have another system you can check your parts in (And use its parts to see whether your system works) ?

So, recently my computer's files got corrupted (I think). I was loaded up CS:S as usual, joined a server I love playing on and waited until I downloaded the map. I waited 10 minutes and guessed it wasn't responding, so I tried to force close it's process "hl2.exe" multiple times, but it didn't close, so I force shut off my laptop 5 minutes later. When I booted it - windows recovery showed up. I shrugged it off and let it do it's work. 1 hour later my laptop shut down and tried to run it again but system recovery runs for 5 seconds. Then I tried booting up in safe mode, but it also redirected me to system recovery. Then I got on my other laptop and downloaded a windows 7 iso. I burned it onto my usb and messed with some BIOS settings to boot the usb on start up. I exitted and saved my BIOS settings and booted up my computer, but after that my laptop didn't display anything. Any help?

P.S: I am using an LG monitor with a VGA cable because my laptop's screen is cracked from the inside and I've been using the vga connected monitor ever since without any problems and got used to it sooner or later. I also tried connecting my laptop with a HDMI cable to my tv, but it didn't work whatsoever.

Thanks in advance

Today I noticed that after I was booting up it would stop on the memory check - ie it would stop on 992mb or whatever it was.

So I thought weird, I'd turn it off and restart, it happened again.

Then after a while nothing would happen - the screen would be blank.

Any ideas anyone? Please.

A:Blank Monitor Screen When Boot Up

Welcome to Techspot!
If you take a little time and fill in some hardware details on your machine it would help in solving you problem.
Was your machine running before and this problem just started, or had you made any changes ?
If your machine is been running for a good while you may need to remove and clean the terminals with an eraser on the ram and some real house cleaning in your box.
In the mean time , you should be able to shutoff the memory test sequence in your Bios setup .
The idea is to get to run a real memory test on your machine.
There are free programs you can download to do this.

Edit: Solution at bottom ...

Background

Computer: E-Machines T2958 running Windows XP SP 2

Summary is at the bottom if you get tired of reading ...

Trying to upgrade from a CRT monitor to a 20" LCD monitor (HP w2007)
The monitor was recognized by Windows and showed up in the Device Manager.
Windows was running and the monitor display was fine.
The monitor reported it wasnt running at an optimal resolution.
I dont know what the resolution was. Possibly 1024x768 as a guess.
The user manual suggested running a software package found on the
monitor's installation CD.
When this software package was run, the screen resolution changed
to 640x480 with 4 colors and the computer rebooted.

Again, Windows booted and the monitor showed the display but
now at 640x480 with 4 colors. In Control Panel, the user could not
change the Display settings.

The user then removed the monitor from the Device Manager and shut Windows
down. The user then hooked up the CRT monitor and rebooted.
The thinking here is that Windows would detect the monitor and
the older CRT could easily display a resolution of 640x480.
I suspect removing the monitor from Device Manager was a bad
idea but that was done.

After the Windows splash screen, the monitor display goes blank
but Windows does boot successfully. The user knows this
because the user starts and signs on to Yahoo Messenger automatically
at Windows startup.

Most online advice is to boot in Enable VGA Mode and change the display

So everything was fine before Windows 10 AU updates. The problem is that if I restart the computer it will I get a blank screen and my monitor(s) goes to sleep and loses signal and doesn't detect the video card so I don't see POST and just a black/blank screen. I'm pretty sure that it must have rebooted right to my login screen because I can tell my mouse/keyboard lighting up and my EVGA GTX 950 fan stop spinning after it reaches the login screen(it uses a EVGA Precision to control the fan).

But on a shut down and a cold boot up it's fine. Only on a RESTART that I will always get this symptom. But IF I shut down the computer and go into the BIOS and exit the BIOS it have the symptom once again like the going into the BIOS somehow make it no longer a COLD BOOT and it reads it as a RESTART.

What I have try and still doesn't work:
-use DDU(Display Driver Uninstaller) to remove Nvidia driver and using the Microsoft Basic Driver so Driver isn't the problem
-turn off FAST STARTUP(Fast Startup is disable in BIOS also)
-unplug and replug the monitor cable and power cable to the monitor
-try DVI and HDMI and still same symptom

Mother board and video card and monitor isn't the problem
-place my GTX 950 into another computer running W10 AU and having no problem
-onboard HD 4000 have no symptom on reboot
-try the GT 430 and AMD 7850 on my rig and doesn't show the same REBOOT symptom

So my conclusion is this. Before the W10 AU update. I remove ... Read more

Computer specs;

Processor: i7 4790
Motherboard: Gigabyte z97-HD3
Graphics Card: Galaxy GTX 970-4G
HDD: Apacer Solid State Drive
RAM: 8GB

A brand new computer, as you can see good specs. It had windows 7 on it and I tried to install Windows 8 on it. The installation purpley-blue screen began, reached 100% and then the monitor went blank. The power supply was sound but the monitor couldn't find the computer it was plugged into.

I power the monitor on, it turns green and then the monitor goes to sleep outright.

I tried a second monitor with the same result.

I tried a different cable, same result. The monitors work when I plug them into my laptop (which also has Windows 8.1 installed). In fact the HDD also worked when plugged inside my laptop, I could see it at least (though the installation was incomplete and messed up the windows 7 installation to boot.).

I can't fathom what the problem is. This is all modern hardware that worked just fine with Windows 7 but not Windows 8? What can I do to solve this? The machine is under warranty but I seriously don't want wish to return it.

Any ideas on what the problem is, let me know.

I considered that it could be the BIOS set up? I may be able to enter the BIOS if I, again, attach the HDD into my laptop.

Thanks in advance to anyone that reads this.

Hello,

I'm running Windows XP, with Avira Antivirus, Spyware Doctor, and I occassionally use Malwarebyte's Anti-malware. I have an 8600 GT video card, a 3500+ AMD CPU, 1 GB ram, and a GIGABYTE motherboard.

A few months back, and now once again, my computer freezes randomly on occassion. Sometimes when I restart, the monitor will be black/blank even though the monitor is on (well, the little monitor light is flickering on and off, when normally it's consistently on. I think the same light flickering on and off occurs when the monitor is on but the computer is not?)

Once this happens, I cannot restart or power down my computer using the appropriate buttons on the front... I have to turn off the computer using the back switch or by turning off the power supply.

Sometimes, when I'm turning the computer back on (after turning it off in an unusual way), the monitor is still doing the blank thing, or the computer hangs during the start up procedures.

If I turn off the computer, and wait a while, then turn it back on, then the computer will work normally. (I typically try to start it up again instantly though, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.) Until it happens again, of course.

Thanks.

I usually connect the vga cable from my monitor to the port on my gpu,but for some reason it doesn't display anything now.

I tried to locate the source of the problem by doing these

1) Connected the vga cable from my laptop to the monitor, and it displays the laptop's content just fine so the monitor/cable isn't the issue.

2)Connected the cable to the vga port on my samsung smart tv and to the slot on my gpu and my desktop boots and functions just fine.

3) I opened up my cpu cabinet and dusted the ram and the video card and put everything back in place but that didn't help either.

I don't have a DVI cable with me so I can't check if that works and I don't have another similar monitor either I can test it on other than my tv.

Before anyone can help you, you need to post ALL of your exact system specs; ie exact mb installed, exact cpu installed, exact pw supply installed, etc, etc, etc. If this is a big box system ie dell, hp, whatever, then post the exact make and model# If you have a service tag, post that as well.

Hello all,

Not sure weather this belongs in the Hardware or Windows 7 section but here goes. I'm having issues with running a dual monitor setup, in that it works fine some of the time but periodically one of the monitors' screen will be blank. This screen briefly flashes the display when turned on but then goes blank. I know it works as it always shows the boot screens, and as such it seems like it could be a driver or resolution issue. I've tried identifying the graphics card as:

and updating from the website but apparently to no avail. I also did an internet search which suggested unplugging and plugging it back in, but again to no avail. It's strange as sometimes it will work perfectly fine, whereas others it will remain blank. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, and I thank you in advance for your time.

Kind regards.

Hello, I got a new computer packaged with the HP Envy 32 inch monitor. I am running into an issue which is simply irrating and I am not sure how to go about resolving it. Basically, the screen goes blank. It isn't a hard lock or anything, it just decides when initialising most full-screen applications (ie, a game) or even post Win10 log in, when computers do that 'flickering' during change over, the screen just likes go blank. This can be resolved by switching the input channel on the monitor, or putting monitor on standby and off again. During these occassions, I am getting sound through the monitor. So from appearances, the monitor is still recieving input from the computer, and the fact switching monitor off and back on, makes it display picture as intended. It is a case where the monitor is simply deciding it doesn't want to show the picture for unknown reasons. Like energy saving or such. I have updated graphics card, ensured I got most up to date display driver, double checked the connection... it just occurs. It feels like there some really annoying setting somewhere which is making the monitor do this, and I would really like to change it. At the moment, it is a rate of having to switch the monitor on and off two times just to get to the start menu, then if I load up a game, it does it again, when I exit the game, it does it again. It doesn't occur when a game which supports borderless-windowed mode is loaded (I presume because it is not 'real... Read more

Hi,

Have 2 identical Dell Dimension desktops E521 series. 17" flat screen monitors with NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE graphics card. Both run windows XP SP3. One in dtrs room, one in son's room.

Dtr called me, reports not being able to "type" on her screen. (was not there when this happened). tried a re-boot. Then monitor was just a black screen.

Came home, turned computer on, monitor light turns green for a second, then stays amber. When I try to toggle input mode (should be VGI) get error message that says "digital input in power save mode press computer button or any key on keyboard or move mouse". Pressing any button or moving mouse does nothing.

If I turn the surge protector off, i will briefly get the blue Dell logo. But a regular turn on off the computer gets me nothing at all on the screen.

Tried swapping out with son's monitor. His monitor is blank (black screen) amber power light, on her computer. Her monitor works fine on his computer.
Searching this message board and Dell support site (which sucks by the way), leads me to believe it might be a graphics card problem (?).

Of course, both computers are out of warranty.

I'm not afraid to open the case to switch out new cards if necessary. (have done this type of work on previous computers).

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi all,
I've read through a number of topics with seemingly similar problems to mine, but none of them quite match my own issue.

The issue is that the monitor frequently goes blank during start up. During the initial boot it is fine, and the problem starts when the XP login screen appears. From this point, right through until everything has seemingly stopped loading during start up, the screen will go blank after approximately 5 seconds. If I turn the monitor off and on again it will display the image again, before going blank. It doesn't seem to happen during every boot, though it will do it more often than not... it will also do the same after logging out and logging in to another account, and if the computer has been left idle for some time.

I'm running a custom build PC on Windows XP Home, SP2. The graphics card is a GeForce 7300 GT, and I installed new drivers yesterday in an attempt to solve this problem. It hasn't worked, and I'm apprehensive to go through with some of the suggestions in other topics with similar problems, in case they do damage. The monitor is an old Dell 15" LCD, I've no idea on the model but it's ~5 YO.

Any advice on how to approach this one would be great!

Since you disabled the 9200, then I suppose the monitor is plugged into the 9800. And I'll also make the assumption that you have installed the necessary drivers for the 9800. I recently purchased another monitor so I can run dual-monitors on my newly upgraded-to Windows 8 desktop. I set the monitor up last night, and I haven't had any major issues so far... One issue that I've run into, though, is the secondary monitor (regardless whether it's the monitor I owned first or the one I just bought) flashes randomly. Last night, a restart fixed the issue, so I didn't think anything of it. Today when I started it up, it was fine again for about 5-10 minutes. Then it began to flash randomly. It's not a constant steady flash, it only happens once every 3-10 minutes, but it shouldn't be happening. Does anyone else have the same problem and/or have suggestions on how to fix it?

I have just did a clean install of Windows 7 ultimate from XP and I am unable to get my dual monitors to work like they did in XP.

I have a DVI Radeon graphics card plugged into the agp slot, and a Nvidia geforce vga adapter plugged into a pci slot of my dell optiplex 755. When I am in the screen resolution settings the second monitor cannot be detected.

In bios I have 2 options under primary video adapter and they are auto, and onboard card. When set to auto the Nvidia card gets a signal but the Radeon does not. There are no conflicts in the device manager, and all of the drivers are up to date.

When I change the bios option to onboard card the Radeon adapter gets a signal but the other monitor cannot be detected and in device manager there is a yellow exclamation mark next to Standard VGA adapter and a code 10 error that states the device could not be started.

I have powered down, and unplugged every cable, I also tried to use the integrated VGA adapter to the Intel G31/G33/Q33/Q35 Graphics Controller but the computer will not even boot. I get
"System Halted
Attention Unsupported Video Configuration Detected"

I have two monitors, both work fine as standalones but Windows will not detect either as a secondary.

Please help me someone, I am so used to having my helpdesk email open in one monitor and all of my other work in the other monitor.

Welcome!

Try updating your card drivers. Go into Device Manager and right-click on your display adapter.

I suspect that the cards are too old, though. We will see.

Can I blank screen the 1st (laptop screen) monitor, yet continue to use the 2nd monitor with the lid open for access to the keyboard?(I noticed with changed settings in Win7 control panel, I can close the lid without cutting off [sleep, hibernate or shut-off] the computer and had to reduce the 2nd monitor display to fit the visible screen. But to use the keyboard one has to open the laptop lid, which kicks in the 1st screen)Thank you

A:PC Crashed, blank screen, Monitor and video card work

I would suggest trying something like a BartPE, an Ultimate Boot CD disk, or a Live Linux distribution to access your data (if possible) so that you can recover it. This will also tell you if the hardware is working correctly - since being able to get at your files would indicate that the hardware seems to be OK (although a slowly failing hard drive may not be obvious here). If you cannot recover the data this way, then the next step (IMO) would be to download a bootable hard drive diagnostic from the website of the manufacturer of your hard drive. Links to the most common are in this topic: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/28744/hard-drive-installation-and-diagnostic-tools/

Hi, As you are confirming that issue is intermittent, and now its working fine, it means that issue would be of display cable. The display cable would be loose. Issue can be fixed by refixing the display cable, if the issue persists then the display cable needs to be replaced. This is the only reason, I asked you in the previous post whether issue was intermittent or display view changed while moving the display lid. This particualr issue has nothing to do with the temperature. Regards,Sumit I am an HP Employee

The screen on my new laptop has gone blank on starting up, it shows nothing, i tried a hard reset which didn't fix. The external monitor won't display anything.
It's a HP envy 15-j112tx running windows 8. With a hdmi connection i tried to connect to an external monitor. The monitor was previously using vga to a desktop, i unplugged that and connected my dvi cable to the dvi port. The monitor says check video connection then goes to sleep. I connected the cables with the laptop turned off and again with the laptop already on. The monitor still says check video connection. The connection is secure, it is a new cord. I pressed the F4 button to switch between screens and waited inbetween presses but still nothing.

It is still under warranty. I disabled the nvidia graphics card a few days ago to try n save on power usage, as it also has an intel graphics card. It has worked fine for a few days since i did that.
Now that i've powered it on/off about 5 times the hard drive stops whirring after about a minute, yet the power button light remains on. It no longer turns off when i hold power for even a minute. I dont want to kill the thing.

Can anyone help me, i can't find an answer in previous threads.

Computer Info:
Compaq Presario Series 0204 (about 5 years old)
240 Volt Power Supply (I think)
Integrated Video Card
2 Hard Drives

Alright here is a tough one for all of you...

Just recently got a new computer. I remove the C: drive from old one and attached to new computer, so that I could transfer all my mp3 files (over 6 GB). That worked fine. Now the problem comes when I put the C: drive back into the old computer. I connected the C: drive back up, but when I turned on it on this is a list of things that happened:
1.Power LED light displays as ON (Green).
2.Hard Drive Activity LED light display shows no activity at all.
3.Moniter LED light displays green for a half second, then turns yellow. It also does not display anything, not even BIOS (blank screen)

I have tried many things to try to fix this problem. Most of which were suggested by a Computer Tech who thought that the computer might be confused on which hard drive has windows on it:
1. Removed the 2nd drive, set the C: to a "Single/Master"
2. Disconnected all devices except for C: Drive
3. Tried differant Moniters
4. Tried to Force power by turning on and off Monitor

The Computer Tech advice worked one time, but after turning it off; it has yet to work again even after repeatively trying to duplicate the steps over and over again.

This computer has to be ready in only a couple days, please even if you've just stumbled across this post, leave a suggestion!

Hello,
My problem is that my monitor (Samsung SyncMaster205BW) 20in. diagonal, was displaying a horizontal stretched view. A day or so ago I changed my OS from Windows Vista to Windows XP. When running Visa the picture was very good indeed, and in proportion. Since using XP the display isn't correct with a stretched horizontal view and large print, fuzzy appearance etc. etc.. I looked in the Display/Settings/Advanced/Monitor...which gave 'Default monitor'as a label, (should this not have labelled it Samsung etc....?)and with Properties grayed out. The Adaptor tab brought up the Adaptor and the Tab List all modes, with one of these selected. I was looking at the Properties of this Adaptor, then Device usage at the bottom, with the selection of 'Use... or do not use...' and unfortunately I might have left it on the Do Not Use, closed the windows, shutdown and went to lunch, .... and now I have now operating screen. How can I get this back?
At the time I was looking for the correct driver for using XP because I guess the operating driver at that time was for Vista
I would be very grateful for any help.

A:Solved: Monitor problem: on-off button is lit up, but the screen is blank (black)

on boot up hit f8 to boot up in safe mode and then change your resolution back to something normal so you can see it on your monitor. then get the latest driver for your video card, those new wide screen monitors don't use normal resolutions that are in the default drivers for windows xp (especially if you haven't done updates).

Okay here is what is happening, I just cleaned up a PC that I own Windows ME OS, more or less a Dell Machine, with a couple of bits added.

Anyway after I was finished cleaning it up I brought it up to the house. It started up fine, Detected everything (from what I can see) but then as soon as it starts to go to the Desktop the Monitor goes blank and all the lights on the Monitor are flashing. I could not figure out what the problem is so I re-started and booted in Safe Mode which worked, I then went to look for the Drivers but it did not detect the Monitor or have drivers available for it (in Safe Mode - is this normal?), I think it is a case that some of the Drivers have been deleted.

So my questions are....

- Is it missing Drivers?
- If so where can I get them?
- Any other Ideas?

Thanks,

Alan

A:Start up Problem - Monitor Lights all flashing - blank screen

Good Evening Alan, I understand you can successfully boot into safe mode.
Understand that in safe mode a basic driver is used to allow video display.

Your symptom is similar to an out of range kind of problem as though you might be using an old monitor where sometime previously you may have had a more modern one and have increased the video settings which is unsuitable for the current one.

Whilst in Safe Mode, go to the control panel > Display > Settings and knock the screen size and colour settings back to say, the lowest available.

See if that allows windows to normally boot, you can increase the settings later if possible.

qldit.

Hi,

I have an Asrock ION 330 HT BD with a Sony Bravia 720p attached (HDMI to HDMI). When I start up my PC, the screen remains black. Only after I plug in a second monitor, both screens work just fine. When I pull the second monitor out, the Bravia also stops getting a signal. Seems a bit weird.. How can I get it to work with just the Bravia attached?

Thanks,

A:HDMI to HDMI only working with second monitor attached

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Have you made sure your graphics card driver is up to date?

Have you tried starting your PC up in safe mode and seeing if the problem still persists?

Please ensure you have done both of these and then post back; it would also be helpful if we knew your system specifications which you can fill in under 'User CP'.

Also does the task bar appear on the primary monitor or secondary monitor?

I'm very new to the PC-building world. I decided to buy some new hardware. My previous computer had an AMD motherboard and CPU and I wanted to make the switch over to Intel. Here are my system specs, starting with the new hardware I just bought, followed by the existing hardware I intended to keep (for the time being):

!NEW!
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H (LGA 1150 socket)
Processor (CPU): i7-4790k @ 4.0GHz
Power Supply: Coolmax 700W (CU-700B)
Memory (RAM): 16GB (2 x 4GB Crucial Ballistix [2 x BLS4G3D1609DS1S00] + 1 x 8GB Crucial Ballistix [BLS8G3D1609DS1S00])
Case/Chassis: Corsair Carbide Series 300R

-KEEPS-
Video Card: EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX 560
Hard Drive 1: 1TB Seagate Barracuda ST31000528AS (7200RPM)
Hard Drive 2: 3TB Western Digital WD Green WD30EZRX
Optical Drive: Blu-ray Disc Rewriter (LG BH14NS40)
Monitor: 23" LG W2353V
Operating System: Windows 7 (64-bit) Service Pack 1
My problem is that after all is said and done, with every part hooked up to the power supply and motherboard, all the fans spinning, all the LED's displaying fine, I still get absolutely no signal going from the computer to the monitor when I turn it on. When I unhook the DVI cable from the video card, a message on my monitor says "Check Signal Cable", meaning it knows that it's disconnected. But then when I plug it back in, that message goes away and it returns to "Power Saving Mode", meaning it at least recognizes that it's plugged into the video c... Read more

Hello-
I have an issue with my Inspiron N5010 screen, it doesn't work when switching on my laptop on Battery or AC mode. It happens a lot of times when I turn on the laptop the power button, the power indicators at the bottom turns on normally and the laptop is running without any weird sounds. But the screen is pitch black even doesn't show up anything when I concentrate on it in with a lamp or any light.
When I press the power button again even after 5 mins from the start time of being running the laptop just turn off immediately and doesn't take time to switch off as If the windows wasn't loaded!
I was resolving this problem by disconnecting the AC adapter > removing the battery > Pressing and hold the power button for 20 seconds technique.but today it doesn't work anymore, If there's anything I can do to get the screen backlight to work normally please If someone faced this problem before which is too common and found a solution I would appreciate any help.
Thanks.

A:N5010 blank screen at startup (External Monitor also didn't work)

Hi,
I really appreciate all the troubleshooting you have already done. If you do not get a display on the external monitor it might be an issue with the video card or the system board where it is connected. When you connect an external monitor to the system press on the Fn and F1 keys together to toggle between the displays, if it doesn't work you can only with the F1, and check if you get display on the external monitor.
I would also recommend you to run the LCD built in self test to check the hardware functionality of the LCD screen, you can run this test by following the steps below:

Power down the system.
Press and hold the 'D'  key on the keyboard and power it on.
A solid color screen is shown and five different colors are displayed. While the colors are displayed, the system beeps every 2 seconds. You can use this test to determine if something is wrong with the display.

You can perform the Dell Diagnostics to determine if there is any hardware failure. To perform the diagnostics, follow the steps:

Turn off the computer; press and hold the <Fn> key, push the power button and release the keys simultaneously.
A blue screen will appear stating Pre-boot System Assessment .
A screen will appear with a message 'Were color bars displayed?(y/n).
Press 'Y' key if the color bars are displayed properly.
If you get any error code, make a note of it and continue testing.

My computer desk sits next to my entertainment system, and I have it connected to two monitors: the primary 22? Viewsonic LCD (DVI) and my 42? Toshiba TV (HDMI hooked in via my receiver). When I just want to browse the ?net or email, I use the primary monitor. For gaming and movies, I use the TV. For a couple of years now, I?ve had display options to always display the TV (monitor 1). If the TV was off, it would default to the Viewsonic, per the Windows feature to always default to the current monitor if only one was on. If the TV was on, it would stop feeding the Viewsonic and default to the TV, so that any games or movies would display on the TV and not cause any issues fullscreen. This way the TV being on or off determined whether the PC would feed to it or not, and I?d only turn on the power hungry TV for entertainment.

About a month ago, my monitors started behaving oddly. The PC would power up normally and load Windows to the Viewsonic, and during the load up screen the Viewsonic would power down. The only way to see the screen was to turn on the TV. This is on Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium (up to date).
Things I?ve tried:Set the Viewsonic to be the primary monitor and settings to only display on the Viewsonic. Result: If the TV is off, there?s no video to the Viewsonic. If the TV is on, it is black (as expected since I've set the monitor to receive the feed) and the feed goes to the Viewsonic.
Set the monitors to extend across both the Viewsonic and T... Read more

A:No feed to primary monitor when secondary monitor is off.

Was anything done to this system just before the problem started?

Have you swapped out the cables and/or tried a different connection to the monitors?

This sounds like a failure either at the video card or the viewsonic monitor electronics, so I would try swapping out the video card and monitor if possible to confirm or eliminate them as the culprit, this can include the cabling.

I had something similar happen when one of my monitors went bad.

HI everyone,
I'm having an issue with my displaying settings and I'm hoping someone here can help me to solve this.

I recently had an older HP Pavilion Media Center m7760n Desktop PC rebuilt. The old power supply fried the motherboard so I need to get a new power supply and motherboard. Here are my current specs.

Mainboard : Asus P5QPL-VM EPU
Chipset : Intel G41
Processor : Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 @ 2133 MHz
Physical Memory : 2048 MB (2 x 1024 DDR2-SDRAM )
Video Card : Intel(R) G41 Express Chipset (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM 1.1)
Hard Disk : WDC (1000 GB)
Hard Disk : WDC (250 GB)
DVD-Rom Drive : TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H653L ATA Device
Monitor Type : Hewlett Packard HP w22 - 22 inches
Monitor Type : Samsung SyncMaster - 15 inches
Network Card : AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCIe Ethernet Controller
Network Card : AR5006X 802.11a/b/g Wireless Network Adapter
Operating System : Windows 7 Ultimate Professional 6.01.7600
DirectX : Version 11.00
Windows Performance Index : 2.9
As you can see from above, the "video card" is actually integrated into the motherboard.

The computer works perfectly except for one major problem. I have 2 monitors, one is 22" with 1680 x 1050 resolution and the other is a 15" monitor with 1024 x 768 resolution. At the back of my computer I have a VGA port and a DVI port. The 15" is connected to the VGA port and the 22" is connected to the DVI port.

Greetings,

I am working on an instrument that runs Windows 7 embedded and has a touch screen. I needed to replace the single board computer and then edit the settings in the BIOS for the touch screen to work properly.

Swapped the single board computer, edited the Bios and booted into windows. Display was not good but visible- I realized I had forgot to change one of the BIOS settings (resolution size) but did remember to change the other setting 24bit color.

When I rebooted to get back into the BIOS to make the other change the screen is blank. Cannot boot from a CD since instrument does not have a drive.

The only thing I can think of use an external monitor instead of the touch screen to look at the BIOS?

Does this sound reasonable? Could I have done something that is rendering the SBC useless now?

Thanks for your help in advanced!

Best Regards,
Marc

A:Solved: Windows 7 embedded blank monitor screen after changing BIOS setting

The last BIOS change you made was to the resolution so it's reasonable to assume that you've set it to a value that the display device cannot handle (res too high most probably). You will need to plug in an external monitor temporarily so you can see the BIOS settings to set the resolution to a lower value.

I would be really greatful if someone could help me here.

I've recently built a computer, and the problem I'm having is with the NVIDA Geforce Ti 4200 AGP 8x 128mb graphics card and my plug and play monitor. I'm wanting the 1024 x 768 so that I can play a few games I've brought. Yesterday everything was fine I could change my resolution to this until some system files got damaged and I had to re-install windows. After re-installing Windows and re-installing the graphics card drivers, I can no longer get my 1024x768 resolution and the smallest I can get is 960x600. I'm using the same applications and drivers as before and can't find any more recent or updated versions and my monitor drivers are also installed as Plug & Monitor just as before. Any help i'd most appreciate as this is driving me mad!

Its ATI, right? What Chipset?

If you can update your Catalyst drivers from www.ati.com then you can use the Catalyst Control Center to adjust the displays. The older versions of Catalyst had problems with Dual-monitor systems.

Hi,

So eagerly i tought to buy this cool looking laptop for a huge $2000 i needed it to output to a hdmi monitor ot TV so sometimes i could see movies as well, now i had to buy the special DA200 dell adaptor and in the past 3 weeks it`s been a complete nightmare, i WAS NEVER ABLE to make it work permanently. The chat support was no help at all usually simply resuming to try and replace the part but i do think the part is good and i didn't feel like waiting 2 weeks for it to ship from china.

The ethernet and usb work on the DA200 adaptor , EXCEPT HDMI.  SOMETIMES it would work briefly until next restart, i had tried everything ever available on the internet. The laptop is running Windows 10 (as it`s restricted to that version, i tried to install other versions with lots of issues and compatibility issues) so  i have installed reinstalled and installed different versions of the video driver for all possible windowses and none worked. what did work was very brief until next restart and that usually happened when i had a fresh windows install, after the first restart i will get a non working hdmi again.

I have tried several hdmi cables so i know it`s not the hdmi cable or the tv ot the monitor. and nobody seems to be able to help!!

I have the 2nd setup through a vga to hdmi cable but it just sits there black with "check signal cable."

2nd monitor is an lg2241

Tried:

- multiple re-boots
- downloaded a driver from LG but don't see that it did any kind of install. Double clicking it's zip file opened it and clicking on the three files did nothing but open gibberish code.
- at screen resolution I see multiple displays and I have it set on extended.
- Clicked detect and identify
- #2 says display device on vga
- tried unplugging and reconnecting the cable (hdmi to vga)

I'm lost. SOS!

lol!

Thx,
Dave

A:Dual monitor setup hdmi to vga on 2nd monitor shows nothing

Dave welcome to the Seven Forums.

That cable won't work unless the VGA port on the computer/laptop supports digital (highly unlikely), as VGA is an analogue signal and HDMI is digital. To get it to work you would need some kind of converter not an adapter, which that cable essentially is.

Assuming this is your monitor,

LG E2241V-BN: 22" Full HD LED LCD Monitor | LG USA

is says it has a VGA port on it. If it does then just use a plain old VGA cable.

Hi there,
so here's a problem I'm having and wondering if someone could share some advice on this. Late last year I dropped my laptop which ruined the screen, all the pixels are messed up. The rest of the laptop is fine and it works properly, just with a broken screen, there's only a small portion of the screen where you can just barely see the desktop.

Anyway, I've pulled out an old monitor and I managed to get the Properties open on the laptop screen in the only bit of the screen that's visible so I could extend the desktop onto this secondary monitor.

What I am trying to do is to get the laptop to just output to the secondary monitor as if it's the primary monitor, the external monitor has a couple of times just changed itself to the primary monitor (start menu, main desktop etc) but then it just after a few minutes jumps back to being the secondary monitor with the (broken) laptop screen being the primary.

Any advice on this would be very much appreciated,

JKB.
