Grey Screen, striped screen or pixelated screen

Q: Grey Screen, striped screen or pixelated screen

Hey guys,

Ok so I redid the post as it all came out quite unclear and blurry.

Screen turns either black, grey or whatever color is closest to the program I was running in stripes as the image in my own reply shows.

Occationally my screen flickers but runs for a bit longer but it seems to be a sign of the system crashing.

The screen flickers occationally during bootup and sometimes causes my computer to run with the screen inactive. When the system crashes I often get a message showing the OC had failed when I am running default settings and sometimes I get an error loading OS which seems peculiar as I've had no issues with my harddrives on earlier occations untill now when I replaced my video card and RAM memory.

Speccs:
New card: ASUS adeon EAH5870 v2
Mainboard: ASUS P5P43TD(775-socket Intel Dualcore CPU running 3.16GHz)
New RAM: Corsair 16GB DDR3 1333MHz
OS: Newly installed Windows 7 64-bit

Both BSOD error logs are in a zipped folder in the first post.

A: Grey Screen, striped screen or pixelated screen

Bump with content ok so I managed to boot my system in safe mode and I'm going to add the .dmp file and the .xml file from the error log which for once confirmed a bluescreen(See picture for the "blue" screen)
Also the system nearly every time after crashing claims I have OC'd the system when I was running default settings except for setting the HDD with my OS first.

I've added both logs in the zipped folder attached, couldnt upload them as they were due to file format.

Alright, so i was browsing on my comp as i usually do, when i got the frozen, striped pixelated screen, as i mentioned in the title. Unable to do anything, i shut it down manually holding down the power button. Upon reboot, i got the same thing at the welcome screen for vista. At first i thought this may have been caused by a recent update, so went in safe mode, and I did a system restore. Didn't solve it. I have fedora installed on this comp, and in that i have no problems. windows safe mode is fine as well. This led me to think i had a software problem. perhaps i needed to update the driver for my graphics card. I tried this via device manager, but it claimed it was up to date. Went to Nvidia's website, downloaded the latest one anyway. applied it. still not solved. anyone know what the problem is?

Let me tell you what happened. I was having problems with a very, very slow CD/DVD combo drive and I looked around and around and could find only one thing that seemed like it would help and it made perfect sense. You see, I have a good computer, but it is a Small Form--not allowing me to add much to it. Anything that I have added has to be added as a slave device. Anyway, my configuration was this: My boot drive is a 80 GB SATA drive. Then, I have only one IDE Controller on the Motherboard, which has the CD/DVD drive as master and an old 40GB Hard Drive as slave. My optical drive was turtle or snail slow when viewing pictures, copying/pasting files to the HD, and anything that is data oriented. So, what I did was disconnect the slave HD drive to see if that would make it run like an optical drive was supposed to run, a little slow, but bearable. When I did this, and reconnected and rebooted, it would not boot to anything--safe mode, windows, last known configuration, hp recovery, 2 boot discs, nothing! At the opening screen, I get the opening HP screen, but it has stripes. I go into BIOS and the menus are striped. If I try to boot to Windows/Safe Mode, I get either a black screen where nothing happens, an endless pause, or a Blue Screen telling me that I have a BIOS error and they have stopped at this point to avoid any further damage. There's also a message telling me to press F7 to disable A... Read more

My assumption is one of the memory sticks got loosed from it's slot when you played with the HDD. Please remove the memory modules and use a pencil rubber to clean it's gold plated contacts.  After making sure the contacts are clean and shining, inset them to the slots. If there is more than one module, connect one at a time. Now try to boot the system.

Hi,I have a major problem with my laptop where i can now only operate in safe mode.My original problem was the screen just went black and nothing could be done(no mouse pointer or nothing) ctrl alt del didn't work or escape. I just had to power off. When restarted the screen would be black background with a lot of @ icons dotted all over the screen and the screen would then be striped blue. System restore wouldn't work. I decided to send it to a local shop for fixing. It came back after ?60 charge! stating that laptop boot viruses fixed and system updated... happy daysbut now it is back again!!!This time system restore did work and i thought phew! but the problem keeps returning and after about 4 system restores it won't restore anymore....help!The virus/fault has no pattern as to when it returns, could be on start up, sometimes when online. another time just whilst using the desktop and also when using my F drive to watch a cd.all info posted below as per prep guide.will apreciate any help pleaseDDS (Ver_2012-10-19.01) - NTFS_x86 NETWORKInternet Explorer: 7.0.6000.16982Run by matt at 13:01:31 on 2012-11-05Microsoft? This is driving me crazy.

Right after I boot my laptop, the screen flashes randomly.

Also something is stealing focus from what I am working on to something else.

Then it likes to suddenly go to a grey screen. I have to manually reboot.

If that is not enough, it like to just reboot.

Scanned with my AVG and Kaspersky, nothing found. Tried TrendMicro House Call, nothing. Dr. Web, nothing.

All drivers are up to date.

I have run it in the safe mode for about an hour with no problems. No new software installed recently. I went to restore and it was only dated from the previous day, so no help there.

I would prefer not to Nuke and pave, but if that what I need to do, I can.

Any thoughts, theories, explosives you can recommend for this?

I await with enlarging piles of hair as I pull it out.
Roger

I played Dead Island for about and hour or so the other day with no problem, I decided to play it again today.
After about 40mins of playing, the screen just went grey (There was some lines but I cant remember if they were horizontal or vertical). I could still hear some sounds, but I couldn't do anything besides restart my computer by hitting the button.
I just though it was a random bug from the game considering the bugged release of the game, so I just went and watched a movie. I came back and started it up again. After about 10 mins, my screen just went blank and said "no signal". Like with the first time, I could hear sounds, but the only thing I could do was restart.
I also played some TF2 and minecraft with no problem.

Is this hardware related? or just the game?

Edit: I also played a game of League of Legends, and that was fine aswell.

A:Grey Screen + Black Screen(no signal)

Could also be drivers for graphics card. Please post full system specs and follow these instructions even if you do not have BSOD's. The logs will tell us more..

We have a number of HP ProBook 430 G3's (30+) which are able to power on, pass the Windows 10 splash screen, but then have a grey screen where you would expect to see the typical log on screen. We have found that clicking the mouse, pressing enter (to accept the user policy message) and inputting the password of the last user and again pressing enter, will load their profile - though the start menu doesn't work. From here, I can right click the Windows button and sign out, which returns me to the log on screen, but this time correctly. Logging in again without rebooting and everything seems to works fine. So far, we have not detected any kind of pattern or repetition as to why this might be happening. Nor can we prevent it from happening in the future. Launching into Safe Mode and rebooting seems to get the machine back to normal for a while, as does removing the battery and holding the power button for 30 seconds, before trying to boot. It has become a huge problem and we're clutching at straws to resolve. Any help would be really appreciated.

The question to answer:  if you attach an external screen, does it show the same fault?  If so, the video chip is going bad and the mainboard will need to be replaced.
If not, first thing to try is replacing the video wiring harness inside the system.  If that doesn't solve the problem, replace the display panel.

I have had a dell laptop running windows vista for about a year. When I first got it, it would shut down randomly sometimes displaying a black or stripped screen. I downloaded something from windows update, which seemed to have stopped it. However, it started doing this again recently, and I can't figure out a pattern as to when it is shutting down. After the screen appears, I turn the computer off, and restart it, and everything goes fine for a few hours, and then it does this again. Is there a way to stop this from happening??

Hello,
I can't believe there is a forum for win8, thought nobody liked win 8.. i have no preference but it is surprising to me.

Anyways, I am having a problem with my laptop, it is an Alienware m15, it has been a long ongoing problem but now it is unbearabe. The computer is now running very slow, it will randomly give me a Microsoft OS crash error, but then corrects itself. It flickers to a grey screen for a second, sometimes five minutes. Just yesterday, upon start up it took almost 10 mins to get to the log in screen, where it then jumped from my log in screen to the tablet display, and back and forth a bunch of times. I had no control over the laptop so i powered it down.

Today i took it off of the shelf and it is running.. some pages say to reinstall drivers, I am thinking it could be my video memory I dont really know what to do. Also, how do you clear your video memory.. it is starting to get on my nerves that there wasnt an easier way integrated as it seems to be neccisary for any gaming. (with the m15 anyways)

thank you for the help people.

Every so often the computer will bring up a screen that's either blue, pink or yellow with white pinstripes and I can't do anything other than pull the plug and reboot. I've never seen any computer bring up these types of screens before and I have no idea where to start to find out what's causing it. Can anyone help me with this please?

I'm also having problems with freezing while on the net using a Firefox browser. This issue resolves itself, it eventually restarts, but I can't figure out why it does it to begin with. Computers are so frustrating, grrrrrrrr!!

Your video drivers may have become corrupted. You might see if uninstalling and reinstalling your graphic card and monitor drivers can help.

I'll cut right to the chase:

I own an emachines E630, which is essentially an Acer. It's pretty old, something like 2.5 years. It's starting to show signs of aging lately.

So here's the deal - I accidentally dropped my computer bag, but it didn't seem significant at all. After 2 days my screen started to become pixelated, like, really really pixelated to the point where you can't see anything. It usually comes about after about an hour of the computer being turned on.

At first I thought it might have something to do with the videocard and perhaps it overheating, not the screen, but weirdly enough, when I touch or skew the screen it sometimes goes back to normal. Also, I noticed a tiny break in the screen in the upper corner of the screen. I couldn't tell you whether it is LCD or not.

Also, it was pixelated everytime I turned it on, but then I put it in computer bag and I assume it was shaking side to side a little bit and the laptop worked fine after that for like an hour. This makes me think that after the fall something might have become unplugged or similar.

I'm planning to plug it in to a desktop monitor tonight, but this far it seems like it really is a screen problem. I'd rather it be a screen problem, because I am in no mood to change the motherboard(since the VGU is integrated.)

Any Suggestions this far? I'll update this thread after I plug it in to an external monitor.

Cheers.

If it was dropped id start with it being a screen problem.I would take it somewhere and have it checked out and go from there.

A:pixelated screen

It could be the graphics card or the graphics driver.

Boot into Safer Mode to see if this persists there.  Safe Mode uses a native driver, so if this is a driver the problem should not persist.  The resolution in Safe Mode is not the best, but that's the nature of the driver used.

To boot into Safe Mode press the power button to start the computer and immediately start tapping the F8 key.  This will take you to the Advanced Boot Options of which Safe Mode is one of the options.  You will need to use the up or down arrow to navigate to this, then press Enter to select it.

If so, then it's probably a filesystem failure - run CHKDSK and SFC in offline mode from the RE, and see if that helps.
Otherwise, you could be looking at malware, or driver failure - or a hardware problem

Hello,

I recently have encountered a problem with my desktop. It seems on occasional system start-up during bios, post bios and under heavy demand (games / HD content) my desktop will freeze and cover my screens all over with large pixels.

I initially thought perhaps the GPU was overheating? But this was not the case. The temperature did not exceed 39-58C. I then tried updating / rolling back my drivers and also to update my motherboard driver to the latest release. From further research I noticed perhaps underwhelming PSU? But I have 750W from OCZ and my build only requires 501W so this is not the case.

I built the desktop myself with components and therefore have no "support desk" to call.

*PC SPECS*

Intel i7 2600k - Sandybridge - Not overclocked
8GB Ram 1600 MHZ - Not overclocked
Nvidia 570 GTX 1.28GB Msi twinfrozr (Not overclocked)
60GB SSD (boot)
1TB Hard drive (storage)

Throughout the case is a lot of fans to keep the system cool and I also maintain the tower to a fair level of dust-freeness..

TL;DR? Desktop Freezing, tried the obvious, help!

So therefore I am seeking advice on what to do next. i was considering system reinstall however if this is happening pre-windows launch (in bios) it seems it could be an issue with the GPU it's self?

I have enclosed an image to show you what this looks like. (I was on Starcraft 2 at the time).

Hi. I'm great with computers and this is one thing I'm just totally stumped on.

While playing any online games my computer started flickering the graphics (tearing) for about 5 months off and on now. The tearing would stop when I moved the tower in a certain position or just lightly hit the top of the tower. The problem got worse with random seldom lockups pixelated style. I would just have to reboot to fix this.

Recently my computers speakers have been always buzzing with games open (only high graphic games like wow, second life, counter strike etc). The computer is fine to surf the net and all else. Two days ago while playing a world of warcraft my computer pixelated and locked up (after about a minute the monitor will go off but not the tower). The problem would happen every few minutes back to back. Then for about a whole day the computer was fine with world of warcraft open. Suddenly it did the lock up again. I decided to look in my computer and clean it out / put back in the graphics card. After all that it still was causing the same problems. I reopened the computer and this time and switched the memory sticks around (I just bought brand new memory 2 weeks ago). At this time I also took time to look at this chipset where I noticed the heatsink fell off. All I could see was dryed up sticky (glue like) substance, which I found to be thermal paste later on. I wet a smoothe cloth and removed it.. (I had no idea this fell off at the time).

I put back together... Read more

your GFX card could well be buggered.....
are you monitoring card temps...??, i know you say it artifacts straight away, but it could of been caused by heat & a lack of thermal paste (as it dissipates over time)

what card is it....???

how long have you been running it..??

Hi,

I have a pretty bad problem. I got a virus/malware on my computer. I downloaded some software, scanned the exe file with Clamwin, which said it was clean, then I clicked on the file and all hell broke loose. My screen became pixelated (red waves and blue boxes) and my machine rebooted. I tried to start it in safe mode, but it did the same thing. I was finally able to get to the command prompt and saw that a new file "tujserrew.bat" had been added to the root. I deleted that file and still have the same problem. I have been unable to get to the command prompt since then.

I am running Windows 7 on a dell with an i7 processor. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I am not exactly sure what is causing this but i would first guess that i need a new graphics card. My graphics card is an AMD Radeon HD 5450. I play world of warcraft and starting today when i try to open the game, blue squares appear instantly at the log in screen. my screen will then freeze, go to black screen for a few seconds, come back to the login screen with the blue squares, and this process repeats itself until i can exit the game. Then my actual computer itself just on the desktop will form these squares, sometimes blue sometimes red, until my computer crashes and says "Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout fail." I always get messages during this saying my display driver has recovered from an error or something along the lines of that so i am 99% sure i need a new graphics card because this one is dying apparently. If i could get a gauranteed answer to this problem i would really appreciate it.

A:pixelated colored squares on my screen

Hi and welcome to TSG.

Your initial description would indicate a possible GPU issue, however could be heat related (based on the fact it starts when you start WoW) so worth looking at that also.

Can you provide the exact make and model of the PC, assuming its a prebuilt 'big brand' machine like a HP, Dell, Acer etc? If it is, is it fully stock or have you changed / upgraded any hardware on it?

If it is a self / custom build, please provide make and model for the motherboard, CPU, RAM, Hard drives, power supply etc. The more info the better.

What operating system are you using and is it 32 or 64 bit?

Help, I was just playing Warioware and for a sudden, the screen got pixelated, go black and restarted. This had happened quite a few times before, but this time, after restarted, the BIOS screen also pixelated, and vertical pixelated bars appeared on the screen and followed by BSOD before the welcome screen. I restarted in Safe Mode and clean all the display drivers using Driver Sweeper. For sure any of these two files atikmdag.sys and atikmpag.sys caused the BSOD because after I swept all the drivers files, it boots successfully without BSOD.

But how can I fix this vertical bar? Do I need to buy a new graphic card? If so, will this happened again because I think new graphic card will also use atikmpag.sys nd atikmdag.sys? And if it is again, should I switch to Nvidia? Please help me, my brain got confused typing in this pixelated bar, and excuse me for any mistake or posting in wrong section

I'm using ATI HD 4670 with no installed CCC right now. Before this, I used 11.11 version of CCC.

PS: I attached the image of the vertical bars.. I simply can't do anything with it present!

Seemingly at random my computer will just freeze up and the screen will either be pixelated or be nearly solid white. It's been happening more and more frequently lately, oftentimes within 5 minutes of booting up. Now all of a sudden it's just been happening every hour or two. Needless to say this isn't acceptable hahaha.

I looked at the event viewer to see if there was some error coinciding with the freezes and the only one I could find was:

AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO port address (0x71), which lies in the 0x70 - 0x71 protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.

and

AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an illegal IO port address (0x70), which lies in the 0x70 - 0x71 protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.

I'm not sure if this is related as the error doesn't happen at the time of the freeze.

I have an Acer Aspire M1641 - U1521A

It doesn't have anything special and I've had it a few years now. I just don't know if the video card is going or something far more sinister.

Any help or knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hey everyone, I have an interesting problem.

I am not sure if it is a hardware or software, so please move to the appropriate forum if necessary.

A while back, I downloaded the Windows 7 RC 7100 build and did a fresh install from XP. Everything worked fine except for when I would log on or off, or I would use certain popups through control panel or anything, my entire monitor would have black squares pop up like it was pixelated or shattered. I thought it was a RC problem.

I recently just bought and installed a Windows 7 Home 64 bit OEM and it is doing the same thing. I've attatched a picture of what it looks like when I run a pop up through my control panel (In this case, the windows computer assesment thing). The screen does the same thing when I log on or off still. I have a Nvidia GeForce 7600 GS AGP and yes, I have updated the driver for Win7 64bit. Any help would be great!!!

Thanks!

JB

Hi All,

Yesterday, whilst playing Dark Souls 2, my PC froze, and it looked like this.

Ctrl-Alt-Delete wouldn't work, so I hit the reset button on my desktop tower. The graphical issue has persisted, and I'm not sure how to fix the issue. I assume it is a hardware problem, as opposed to software, but I am not sure.

I used AVG 2013 to fully scan my PC and it came up clean, no issues.
I used PC TuneUp to identify any other problems.

Firstly, it told me to use the Disk Doctor to scan all my disks; I did, all fine.
It also highlighted that there was 'a problem' with the Graphics Card, and suggested I use Device Manager to update to the latest drivers. I did so, and Device Manager informed me that I was running the latest drivers for my card (Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX).

This is following uninstalling, and allowing Windows to reinstall the card following advice from a seemingly similar problem my search turned up on this site. Now, having allowed Windows to ensure that I'm running the latest drivers, I still have TuneUp telling me there is 'a device not working properly' pointing to the card.

I'm at a loss now, I'm not hugely knowledgeable with computers and I've done all I know. I'll include some more images, anybody guess the issue? I'll provide any info required.

[Pictures Attached]

Thanks,
Tom.

Hello
Today i cleaned my PC case with compressed air , a TON of dust came out of it and the temperatures were great but i noticed it was acting a bit slower than usual. I didn't think too much of it since its an older pc and i don't expect it to be any good. I started up a game and after 10 minutes i started seeing white noise on my screen... the type of noise you see when something is interfering with a signal. I saved my game, closed it and went into detective mode. The temperatures and ram usage were fine but i was still getting the lines showing up and after a while they turned into (around) 4x4 pixels width.
Rebooted and everything seemed fine. Went into youtube, and after around 5 minutes of playing a song i decided to change it, i clicked my mouse, it froze into place for a second and my whole screen turned into green pixels with other colored pixels mixed . Restarting the PC seems to fix the problem, temporally. During video and gaming the temperatures are in normal boundaries. I got a few BSODs which i haven't seen in a while ....

Any ideas ? If you need any info please ask and if this is the wrong section then can it please be moved. Thank you

edit: My GPU has the latest drivers installed. This problem did NOT exist before i did the cleaning. I had 60 degrees celsius from the dust, now everything runs below 40, with CPU being at 27 and gpu at 35.

first thing I would do is open the case power removed. and reseat the graphics card and ram and make sure all conectors are seated all the way.

Ok, I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, SP1. Hardware is about ~4 years old, I put the system together myself. It was originally running Windows XP.

For the first 3 years, everything worked fine, I don't think I had a single BSOD or crash of this type..but about a year ago, it started doing this thing where the screen would become very pixelated, and completely freeze..I would need to do a hard reset. This would happen randomly, but usually within 1-60 minutes of using the computer. It happens when I'm browsing the net or doing random things within Windows, but seemingly doesn't ever happen when I'm running a game or anything graphically-intensive. I can play World of Warcraft for 6 hours with no crash or problems at all, but 15 mins into browing the web it will freeze.

I've tested all the memory, and replaced the power supply, video card, and HDD, and nothing seems to help. It's doing the same thing no matter what. Also, I should mention that it started doing this when I still had XP installed, and it's continued to do the same thing even now that I have Windows 7.

Sometimes there will be a month or two where it doesn't happen at all, but then it will just start happening again, and do it for a couple months. Every time I start the computer, without fail, it will happen within 60 minutes, unless I'm playing a game. Also, for the first 9 months or so, it would just freeze with the pixelated screen, and stay like that until I did a hard reset..but lately, after the scr... Read more

Hi there. For the past week, I've been getting some random BSODs, some freezes, and sometimes just a random restart. there is a flash of a pixelated screen, and then it just restarts. This computer is nigh on two years old, and has showed no sign whatsoever of slowness or any malfunction. Yet for the past week or so, it's been randomly crashing and getting restarted. Specs
-Intel Pentium Dual Core processor. 3 GHz.
-ATI Radeon graphic card. 1 GB.
-2GB RAM.
-320 GB storage space.
-HP Pavilion CPU.

I would upload the dump files, but honestly, it crashes by the time i press the copy button. i am attempting to get them using the homegroup from this computer.
anyway, i would really appreciate some help.

EDIT: I managed to pull the dump files out from the homegroup. here they are.

This problem is like the one at this forum post:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/739407-screen-suddenly-freezes-pixelates.html

The screen pixelates and the computer has to be restarted manually, only after sitting idle for awhile. I recently was invaded with malware (which seemed to piggyback on an AVG 8.5 upgrade), which I got rid of using malwarebytes. All malware/virus problems are cured, but the pixelation problem never happened before, and I have left the computer on for weeks at a time with no problem. System is two years old with no problems ever.

The Events Log shows no Warnings or Errors.

Help please anyone.

Hello I have been having minor issues with my windows 8.1 pc lately. Today had me worried a bit as when I turned on my Lenovo H515 I had a pixelated blue screen error. I promptly turned off my screen thinking maybe it was that and when I turned it back on the computer had rebooted itself. I haven't installed any new programs recently but I did install updates 3 days ago and updated Flash player on Thursday this week.

This was yesterday after i shut the computer down normally. But i was away from the machine after doing the normal shutdown.

The previous system shutdown at 2:48:33 PM on ‎5/‎15/‎2015 was unexpected.

This was the error for today 5/16 2:12 pm right after i turned on the computer.

Hi, I was messing around when playing Skyrim with some .ini tweaks to make the game look better, since I thought my computer could handle it. My rig consists of:

Gigabyte 7970 slightly OC
i5-2500k @ 3.3ghz (stock speeds)
8GB RAM
550W PSU 80+ PLATINUM

So looks like I went to far with the graphical tweaks. When loading the game the screen quickly turned brown, and sound got stuck really loud, and then a fan, I can't tell if it is the graphics card fans or the one from my PSU, starts spinning in different speeds, from what I hear about 40% - 100%. It totally freaked me out so I pressed the turn off button on my computer for 5 secs for emergency exit! I suspect that my CPU caused the error, or possibly the PSU.

After this my computer seemed to work fine though, UNTIL I played a very old game (not GPU intensive at all), and the same brown screen came. This time I waited around to see if something happens. After perhaps 1 minute of waiting I heard the Win7 OS "log in" sound. Weird. My screen was still brown so I pressed emergency exit again.

Since this my computer has gone nuts. When I rebooted, the graphics drivers were messed up, and screen resolution was as if there was no drivers installed. I tried installing the latest driver again, but it said there already is one installed. So I uninstalled and installed the drivers again, and still no fix.
Now none of my games run, however I got the screen resolution to normal in the Control Panel.. This means th... Read more

Hi all,

My Asus laptop has a problem. When I start it/unhibernate it I get a grey screen. Sometimes I can just close the lid, open it again and everything is fine but other times the grey screen persists through numerous attempted restarts.

The computery bits are working as it still makes the relevant bink-bonky noises. If I time it right I can also enter my password to unlock it (can here the "bing" noise when the password is accepted), even with nothing but grey on the screen

Once it's running it's absolutely fine but the moment the screen goes off (if I don't use it for a few hours) it's back to grey screen on trying to wake it up again.

Any ideas?

Update drivers from the Asus website - get ALL of them.
If that doesn't help, then:

Beyond that, let's try looking at these reports:
1)  Please provide this information (even though you may not be reporting BSOD's) so we can provide a complete analysis (from the Pinned Topic at the top of the forum):  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/576314/blue-screen-of-death-bsod-posting-instructions-windows-10-81-8-7-vista/
2)  Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).
FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504

Hi,

Kindly follow the below mentioned steps in order:

1. Confirm Hard Drive is recognized in BIOS. If yes, follow next step. If NO, load BIOS defaults.
2. Boot to Safe mode and perform system restore. System Restore will affect Windows system files, programs, and registry settings only. If system restore fails or unable to access safe mode, follow next step.
3. Run Start Up repair from the URL mentioned: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-vista/Startup-Repair-frequently-asked-questions
4. If the issue still persists, then try running the Hardware Diagnostics. If you get any error code, make a note of the error code.

Hope this helps.

My mother has an HP X13-04657 (I really don't believe that this is not the model number, but she is insisting it is), computer was working last night, left on, this morning it had a greyish/black screen. Rebooted, shows HP Invent F9 start up, F10 save and reboot F5&6 to change "stuff", F1 is help. If nothing is pressed it will go to black screen it will say windows failed to start, then windows is loading files, then goes to a black screen then you can't do anything. If you do use an F key it takes forever to get to that option - she used F9 where she could "restart windows normally" and this eventually takes her to the black screen. The other F options eventually take her back to the black screen too.

This is the best description I can give because my mother is a moron and she's in CA and I'm in PA and I'd like to strangle her.

Any ideas please email me, [email protected]

First of all remove your email address or you will get spam or worse.i know you are frustrated but name calling isnt going to help your mom any.it sounds like the hard drive has failed or is failing or possibly the motherboard is bad.hopefully what ever she wants to save such as documents, pix, etc, is on cds because either way if its the drive or motherboard it may not be able to be retrieved.

I have a fairly new (bought in December) Dell Inspiron/Windows 8 that is used mainly by my kids to play games. It's minimally loaded- Windows Office, Adobe and generally starts up fast. Today they report to me that "something is wrong." On start up all I get is a grey screen. I tried F2 and F10 - no response. Doesn't even respond to Control/Alt/delete. I've searched the forums and the only thing that seems to come close is that they have possibly enlarged a split screen somehow so it's hiding everything else- but what to do? Also please no download suggestions, as it has to get to Windows to do that, and we're not there yet.
Thanks in advance

My sony Vaio Z running windows 7 x 64 has suddenly gone to a screen with a shade of grey on all programmes, with less brilliance but a super luminescent cursor arrow or hand.

Any comments for a cure, to get back to normal??

Dear racerman 202,
Kindly restart the machine! See if it helps! Otherwise boot into "safeMode" and go to a restore point date and/or time before this "mishap"occured.

Are you using a internet security suite? If so, turn off the Default Windows firewall! Did you install any new software program before this occured?

I have gotten a Acer Extensa 5420-5687 yesterday, and so far there has been four instances of where the screen turned grey for no reason either in the middle of a session or when it was idle. Everything seems to be working properly, except for the fact that the screen is grey and none of the buttons are responsive. I have to maually shutdown and reboot to get it to work again. Suggestions?

System freeze

Have you installed any new hardware, or has there been any changes to your system recently ?

You could:
Download Ccleaner and run

Update your Antivirus and do a full scan

Defrag is also a good option at end of this

Also confirm that this is not an overheating issue (ie are fans on)

This type of problem can also refer to Ram inside your computer
Other than cleaning out dust and doing a reseat and Ram test
But we may get to this later

Recently, my screen will just freeze and become covered with lines/boxes to the point where you can't tell whats on the screen. This usually happens within minutes of booting up. However, sometimes, everything will work fine for maybe half an hour and then it will happen. I know for sure it is not a problem with the monitor.

I assume this is most likely a video card issue, but I didn't want to buy a new one before confirming. I attached a picture of what the screen looks like after it freezes.

The card I wanted to buy to replace the old one is EVGA GeForce GTX 650.I would also like to confirm that this card will be compatible with my current setup. From my understanding, the current PSU and motherboard will accept it, but I don't know if anything else can affect this.

Thanks in advance.

you need to try updating your drivers and you are also going to want a QUALITY NAME BRAND PSU (corsair (not builder series), thermaltake and FSP are good quality brands) Your PSU is what we call a "junk unit" you have a 500W rating and yet have only 24 Amps on the +12V rail.

Hey,

I have been trying to fix this problem for 1 week, still have the problem unfortunately

Problem description :
Since I installed Windows 7 final version: While playing a movie in full screen, the rendering is some kind of pixelated ( shapes are pretty ugly :/ ). I have the problem with anykind of video ( .avi, .mkv, DVDs... ), with all my video players ( Media player classic, VLC... ).

I did not have the problem with my older config ( win 7 RC ) and have since I formated my computer to install windows 7 final ( home premium N ).

The only way it worked on my new windows 7 installation, was with a very old driver ( 169.62 ), but games work pretty bad with this driver

I just bought a new Nvidia GTS 250 from EVGA and installed it

The main desktop works fine, HD video works fine, but whenever I run steam games, like Team Fortress 2, I get pixelation on the screen. The fonts are completely scrambled and illegible and the graphics look slightly pixelated. This only affects steam games. I booted up Starcraft and Warcraft 2 and they seem to work fine. The pictures below are the before and after effects of the pixelation. I had to take the pixelated one with my camera because the effect ends when I quit said steam program.

When TF2 is open: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v185/alero/1234.jpg
After I close TF2: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v185/alero/123.jpg

I have already uninstalled/reinstalled drivers multiple times, deleted any old video driver software, placed a fresh version of Vista on, gone through all the possible steam fixes and done anything else I could possibly think off.

I am unsure if its:
1) The Card
2) Steam
3) 450 Watt Power supply

This recently started happening. Sometimes when I boot my computer, it displays a white screen with colorful pixels scattered across the screen. It starts by constantly flashing from the white screen to black. Eventually, it stops at the white screen. I can still see my mouse pointer though and move it around. It's happened three times now and it only happens every few boots. I have to hit the reset button on my case to get out of it. Any idea? Thanks.

Here's a picture of the white screen: http://i.imgur.com/mPLw38I.jpg

OS: Windows 10
MOTHERBOARD: Gigabyte 970A-DS3P
CPU: AMD FX 8320
GPU: EVGA GTX 970 FTW

I have also attached the event error log.

EDIT: I think the problem has to do with the constant spamming of this in the logs:
"Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

So GPU drivers or GPU failure? :\

By the way, this only happens on SOME OS BOOTS. Games/video run fine without crashing if the OS boots up properly.

I have tried removing RAM to see if any of them are faulty, did not work.
Startup repair prompted me with a system recovery. I press yes, nothing pops up.
Startup repair has been fully completed. Restarted my computer, same errors and loads startup repair again.
Before entering startup repair, I clicked F8, hoping I can go to safe mode, but instead it displays a black screen until i restarted the computer.
Unfortunately, I am not certain I can provide full details of my hardware pieces since I cant even boot to the safe mode.. But I am willing to try and find out some how if it is required.

I bought a Studio XPS 9100 in October 2010. I don't know much about hardware so pardon my lack of knowledge or my post being all over the place but I'm writing on behalf of my husband.
We did all of the driver updates since but we didn't modify the system or add anything new to it. This was an awesome gaming computer. My husband played lots of graphic-intense games on this computer and it never gave us issues. However, for a while now, each time we open a game or watch YouTube videos, parts of the screen gets pixelated. Graphics in games get distorted and stretched. Sometimes, the monitor stops functioning and recovers (the monitor is fine though, we tested it). Did a diagnostic on the graphics card (AMD Radeon HD 5900) and the test passed. However, the diagnostic shows that our CPU seems to be overheating... it has an intel Core i7 960, overheats around 62C to 75C. We cleaned the inside several times and it didn't change anything. We even had issues a few weeks ago where the computer just shut down and kept beeping and wouldn't open anymore. We waited a while, tried a few more times and it eventually opened again. Did a motherboard diagnostic and it passed. We have no clue what to look for anymore. If I did a video card stress test and it passed with flying color, does this mean our graphics card is ok? What could this possibly mean? Where could the problem possibly be? This computer cost me an arm and a leg, so I want to avoid needing to just give u... Read more

I have and tried to run the games in different compatability modes, downloaded Raptr to optimize games. Changes resolution in the games and for my monitors themselves. Checked to see if DirectX was properly installed. Updated drivers for the AMD Radeon R5 M335 and Intel HD 520.I am able to run some games just fine, but so far Shadows of Mordor and Blade and Soul both do this. You can see it start, but it gets worse the longer the game runs. If anyone knows how to fix this, please let me know. After installing Raptr, it recorded my attempts to fix this, the pixelation does not show up in the screen captures.

Bad news, your M335 is bad or overheating.

One small problem. I now have a grey screen. There is backlight but no graphics whatsoever.
I tried hooking up an external screen and it works great.
Is the problem with my screen? Cable? How can I diagnose this? How did this happen as I'd did not mess with the screen?
Would appreciate any ideas.

Hi,

I have an Acer Aspire 5315 laptop which produces a grey screen on boot, i have removed the WLAN Card, HDD, DVD Drive and also removed and cleaned the fan. I have also tried removing and replacing the RAM with a second card but to no avail. The laptop is taking power in through the DC socket and the issue is occuring both when using AC Power with the battery removed and also with the battery inserted.

This model doesn't contain a removable nVidia Graphics card which i know has caused similar issues in other models.

Any advice or ideas would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks,

Hello All,

This error may have been posted already, i have a friend's Dell XPS m1530 that was not booting into Vista, the vista loading bar came up for a couple seconds and then the screen went black, after about 5-8mins, a blue screen would come up giving an error ( which i cannot remember). I would then have to manual shut it down, I assumed that the windows was corrupt and proceeded to boot from a flash drive to install windows 7, the install started to load and then the screen display was glitchy, like those old genesis games that were dirty, anyways, i could not see anything besides the glitchy mouse, restarted and then the screen comes up grey with some darker lines between, i tried an external monitor but it just shows glitchy, i cannot make out to do anything on the screen, is this a display driver issue, if so why did it happen so suddenly? and how can i be fixed?

thanks for your help in advance,

Andre

A:XPS m1530 grey screen

Could be a power supply issue, a failing hard drive, one memory module failing, or a video graphics card failing. Not likely a driver issue.
That XPS m1530 model has a very touchy motherboard which has a history of problems... failing memory sockets, etc. It also has heating problems with that cooling screen to the CPU fills up with lint, dust, dirt, and fiber... the resulting overheating seems to speed along the failure of various components. The power supply has performance issues if you have a powerfull video graphics card.
Give us the brand and the build date on the hard drive... and the model number of the video graphics card.
I am betting on a video card failure and the hard drive failing... if it is a Maxtor, Samsung, or Hitachi

Okay so every once in a while my computer screen turns grey and i can't see anything but i can still hear. This only happens when im doing something graphically intensive like playing a game or rendering video. I'm pretty sure its my video card (obviously) because everything else keeps working and i can run prime95 for an hour without a problem but 10 minutes of assassins creed 3 and i gray screen. The only way i can fix this is by restarting. It only started happening after I got my new case and moved everything into it so I may have forgotten to do something when swapping but ive checked many times and cant find anything. My best guess would be my graphics card overheating but that doesnt make any sense to me.

A:Grey screen of death?

While you have a corsair pw supply, it is a builder series and not a regular corsair. The builder series is the cheap or value line and is actually made by CTW. A regular corsair is mfg by seasonic; a much higher quality mfg.

Have you opened the case and checked that the video card fan is in fact working? Have you reseated your video card?

As a quick check for overheating, pull the side cover off and place a small desk type fan blowing air into the case. Now see if it has problems when playing a game.

Since you are at the very minimum for a pw supply, I would also check the voltages under a load. Do this with either easytune [free download from the gigabyte support page for your board] OR use hwmonitor [also free download]

Post your 12V, 5V, and 3.3V values while running prime95.

Hi.

Me and my sister both have windows 8.1 laptops. They are quite new. My sisters computer crashed after playing roblox and getting 'locked' out of the server. As usual it made her computer freak but this time it seemed to be somehow broken. She restarted it and then it took her at least 20 muinites to log on. She could not move her mouse. She turned it off and came back 2 mins later. When she turned it on it took 10 mins loading, then it turned out to have a grey screen. She could not log in at all. She held the power button and it automatic repaired. It offered a system restore witch did not help and lead to a horrible grey screen again..

I do not know how to fix it, it keeps on doing that in a cycle while we try to fix it.

Its confusing

Hello everyone! I have a problem that I suspect some of you might have experienced. I have an Acer Aspire V5-573G for a little more than a year now. Yesterday my LCD started flickering with grey and white colours. It normally gets back to normal as soon as I gently tap the screen. Half an hour ago the screen gone totally crazy as you can see in the image below. The taps didn't help anymore and I had to shut down and restart in order to get it back to normal again.  So, how is this problem caused? I have seen many people writing about it on other ACER models. The opinions on what is wrong differ (backlight, cable, graphics, bios). Do you know what is really causing this and how it can be fixed? I would really appreciate some info, because this laptop is vital for my work.  Thanks in advance!

Hey everyone, if this is in the wrong section, I apologize!

Last week I updated my windows vista computer to Windows 7 Home Premium. Since doing this my screen every so often would randomly flash grey for 1 second. This has continued all week up until yesterday when it flashed more frequently. (Close to 10 times in a few hours) Today it did this but the flashing stayed on the grey screen for about 5 seconds. I shut down my computer thinking this might help. When I turned it back on a few horus laster, it stayed on the grey screen throughout the whole startup. When the password screen came up, everything was back to normal.

I did change my screen options today to stop the dimming that windows 7 does once I got back on my computer thinking it may help. Im not sure if this is a driver issue or perhaps my screen going ca-put on me. Any help or ideas would be so wonderful. Thank you.

Hi,
I bought a Toshiba Satellite Pro LD300 a couple of months ago, and I've had a few different problems with it in relation to shutting down. At first it would restart on shut down, but that was resolved by unchecking the 'restart on system failure' box... I was then given a blue warning screen that was related to the display driver, the warning included ***ati2mtag.sys... When I spoke to Toshiba they told me to download the newer display driver which solved the blue screen.
I now have a grey screen! It doesn't happen every time I shut down, but often enough, maybe 7 times out of 10 (I'd say...)
I have sent the computer back to Toshiba, and they replaced the system board, but I am still getting the grey screen. They have advised me to run the recovery downgrade again, but as this will be my 4th recovery, I thought I would see if anyone has any ideas or suggestions before I go ahead with it!

Thanks in advance!
Ailbhe.

Hi everyone, this is my first thread... I just wanted to find out exactly what's causing something with my computer... It has caused no problems thus far, but it does concern me... when I first got my new computer a little over a year ago, it wasn't happening, however after about six months, it started showing a grey screen on start up... after I enter my user password to log into Windows, it then goes to a totally grey screen which stays like that for about 30 seconds or so, and then my regular desktop appears, and starts to load...

what in the world would cause something like this?... I have the top of the line virus protection with Nortons, so I know it's not a viral problem, and I also installed the Dirver Doctor software recently and updated every single one of my drivers that was out of date, so all my drivers are working properly and up to date... even though the grey screen hasn't caused any problems other than slowing down my start up process a little, it just doesn't seem normal and was wondering if there is a way to correct this... thanks for your help.

A:Grey Screen on Restart

Does the same symptom happen if you boot the machine into safe mode (press F8 at startup)?

What about if you log on as a different user (in normal mode), even if you have to create a new account for the purposes of the test?

Those are not meant to be solutions. They're just troubleshooting steps to help us understand the nature of the problem.
