I have an Acer Aspire X1700 (Details
It's about 2 1/2 years old now. Came with Windows Vista, I upgraded it to Windows 7. Also has a newer video card than what came with it.
Anyway, The PSU fan is getting really obnoxious, it gets really loud (more or less like a lawn mower). I have taken the thing apart and have tried every suggestion given to quiet it down, which it does for a whole week or two. This is a small form factor PC, so to even take the power supply out you have to basically take out everything else just to get to it. I have looked for replacements but they are very obsolete. It's only 220W anyway, so i'd like something a little more powerful.
What I want to do is get a larger case that I can use the same hardware is (motherboard, drives, etc) and purchase a larger power supply for that case. 220W really limits the PC. The small case holds a lot of heat even with all fans cleaned and working properly. Even just taking a CD/DVD out that was in it is very hot. I want a case with better airflow than this one.
I really am not sure what kind of case to get that will meet my needs. I don't want anything really fancy. If possible I'd like to get it off newegg.com
Any suggestions would be great.

ok so i just fixed this computer got it for free upgraded the ram to 4g and put an old ati x1000 as a gpu i know very little about computers my question is what video card can i get that will allow me too play video games (im coming from an alienware mx17 and id like that same quality in the hp)
do i need to upgrade the power supply aswell? and if so how do i know what will fit?
i wanna upgrade this the best i can before i start on a pc build from scratch.
also a problem im having is that it wont read two sd cards that i have, the card reader works for others but not the new ones i got it wont even recognize it at all?
Can you find a model number on the motherboard and post that here? Whatever information you have on the computer would be helpful. It is tough to say what would be the best without that information. When upgrading the video card you will likely have to upgrade the power supply as well. What is the power supplies output in terms of watts?3 more replies
trying to build a sff , p4 2.8 northwood, intel 865glc, 1 gig ram, and need advice on how to fit things together.. i heard that sony optical drives are shorter than most , is this right ? i need a microatx psu.. probably more than 350 watts, any advice ? trying to stuff this into an old p2 compaq presario micro atx case.. heat sink and fan will require moving the hd .. has anyone tried to stuff 10 lbs of crap into a 5 lb box ? tia
Personally i'd buy a case...In a small box like that you could easily run into heat issues.
Plus what happens down the road if you want to add components ? ?
Has anybody put SSDs in these Elite 8000 sff machines yet and if you have what size. After looking into buying a new graphics card i hit a few problems.
The computer is a Small Form Factor pc which means i am quite stuck in what i can upgrade.
My question is this, Is it possible for me to rip out the insides and stick them in a normal mini-tower so i can go out and buy a decent pci-e graphics card? For your information my Motherboard is an Acer WMCP78M
Done various searches and came up with nothing, so your help will be much appreciated.

Hi, I've got a dc7700 Small Form Factor system. It was working fine but after a reboot it won't start up normally anymore. The black POST screen appears, RAM testing starts to count up and then I see and error about "system options not set". After less than a second, a blue window in the middle of the screen displays the message "smart card authentication" and below that, "smart card reader not present".
Long shot but before getting too complicated try discharging the motherboard components like this:Turn off, disconnect power cord then hold the power Off/On button for at least 20 seconds. At odd times glitches can be cleared this way.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks3 more replies

I have a business machine, very old. It came with Win 2000, and was leased out to business then returned for more recent models. These are eagerly snapped up, and I have had this one for a number of years. But it just keeps on going and going, and I like it very much.
I put Windows 7 on, just for the heck of it. But surprisingly it ran very well. I can't do very much as I can't find a graphics driver for it. So everything is 640x, very large. I searched all over, even went to their web site. Their graphics drivers only go up to XP, not even Vista.
Is there someone out there who can find a graphics driver that will work? I was experimenting putting Photoshop CS 2 on, and the little Compaq couldn't even load it with XP. With Windows 7, Photoshop CS4 not only was able to open but ran normally. Not slow at all. Course I didn't do anything challenging, just normal adjustments. But still I was really impressed. I just can't use this computer unless I can find a driver for the graphics so I can change the resolution. It has the integrated type.
I had one of these in the past. From what I remember the small form factor still had 1 or two expansion slots. WIthout knowing the exact model of EN have you looked at a separate graphics card ... you may need to find an ISA compatible card but that should make finding drivers easier.6 more replies
Looking for possible upgrades for my Hp Compaq DC5800 small form factor. I already know what can be done ot these computers is limited. If anyone knows if a regular mobo wil work in it in place of the L shaped one that's in it. I been looking for days on end for upgrades i can do to the board that's in it like changing out the core 2 duo processor for the core 2 quad or better if there is one. I'd also like to put a decent graphics card in it that wn't over power the seemingly unchangable power supply. I also know i could buy a different shell and build a computer but i like this one's size and the fact it lays flat instead of standing up blocking my window. Downloaded and installed all the Network drivers, my device manager still reads yellow exclamation mark on Ethernet controller. How do I find the correct drivers for the controller?
I take it that you didn't have the Factory Restore Capability available to you? This would have reloaded all the correct drivers for you. Although it would have also loaded all the Crapware that HP/Compaq bloats a computer with. You rally did not need to download all the network drivers. You would need to identify which Network Adapter your computer uses then install only the driver for that one.
I have 2 HP dc5000 small form factor PC's that have become increasingly taxed with CAD and Photoshop processing. Can anyone suggest what vide card I can use in a small form factor machine with no AGP only PCI slots available?
I think the best you're gonna get is an NVIDIA FX 5500 if all you have is a PCI slot. I suppose that'll do okay with photoshop and CAD programs, though. Just don't expect to play any newer games. Here's one from newegg.com: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130255
You can pick up an FX 5500 at WalMart, but it'll be almost twice the price.

Okay, I have an HP compaq 8000 elite small form factor, that currently has 4gb of memory. Each module has 1gb, and I want to take those four out and replace them with my Gskill 8gb memory kit, which is 4gbx2 the model number on gskill for this part is f3-10600cl9d-8gbnt. Previously, I had to return my first order of parts. After asking these forums, I was told to purchase this memory. I also asked the service I bought these parts from ,newegg, and they agreed these parts would work. I took this a step further, and contacted Gskill directly and was again told these parts would work. I need someone to point me in the direction of either A) a way to make my current memory work or B) new memory that they are 100% sure will work in my computer. When i installed my previous memory, the computer would flash red lights and beep a few times. Nothing appeared on the display. I do not believe a support representitive from hp has contected me yet, which is highly dissapointing after the few months i've been trying to figure this out. Is there a way to get the proper case to work properly with names like McMillian, MacSmith, McCord, etc.?

I have a Dell Optiplex GX270. When I press the power button, the power button light turns amber, I hear some fans spinning, and the CD drive spinning. However, it never gets to the boot screen (or any screen). If I open the case and press the power button, however, the power button turns green and the computer works fine (loads all the way up and functions like normal). If I close the case after it has started, it continues to run fine. I'm guessing / hoping it's not the mother board or power supply that has directly gone bad... but maybe there is a connection or something? that changes from when it's closed to when it's open. I've heard of something like... the motherboard is shorting out by touching the case... but I'm not really sure where to look for that / how. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

You didn't give much information on the brand or specs of the cards or the systems you are installing them in. Are the PCI cards driverless? If not, did you install the drivers for the cards? Do the cards require an auxiliary power connector that wasn't plugged in?6 more replies
Hello everyone. I am making this post to find out what you all suggest on a small graphics card I can get to insert into the PCI Express x16 slot of my Dell Optiplex 760 computer?
It is a small form factor so it will have to be a very small card and one that does not require a lot of power since the power supply is only 250w I believe.
Right now, it is using the onboard VGA connection and a CRT monitor is hooked up to it. I would like to use a DVI monitor and maybe even be able to run some older games on minimum settings.
I will try to include a few pictures of the desktop.
The computer specs are:
Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 3.33GHz CPU
4GB RAM DDR2-800
Onboard Video and Sound cards
250w Power Supply? I could check this to verify.
2TB Sata Hard drive
Would an XFX HD 5450 work? Here is a link to it.
The dimensions of the card are: 7.17" x 3.19" x 1.1" which should fit I would say?
but it does specify that a minimum of a 400w power supply is recommended,
so I should stay away from that one?
Another option would be to upgrade the power supply if you all know any that can fit this computer, so that way I have the option of upgrading to a more powerful graphics card in the f... Read more

Would this graphics card be correct https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/141951188532 as im not too sure what I'm looking out for in a compatible card. Thanks in advance
Hi: Yes that card should work, but my only concern is that model has a fanless heatsink (which is nice because it is quiet and no fan to conk out on you). My concern is that the heat sink on the model you posted may stick out too far and interfere with other components inside the small form factor chassis. You may want to opt for this model card if you can get it in the UK. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130606&nm_mc=KNC-MSNSearch-PC&cm_mmc=KNC-MS... Note that the heat sink does not stick out much beyond the width of the card, and the low profile brackets are included in the box, so you can swap out the mounts. Also the VGA port can be uplugged from the card if you don't need the VGA port. So, open up the case of your PC and take a look around. If you don't think the larger heat sink in the model you originally wanted is not going to be an issue, then go for it.1 more replies

I am looking for something thats not going to be very large but will house 3 3.5 drives (IDE more than likely but I have not determined yet if this is the case because this customer will probably spend more money on HDD;'s of any kind to make this pretty.)
I want it to have a single power source and not be too klunky. Raid within it would be a + but not a have to and I don't care about interface firewire or USB 2.0 is fine. Heck even ethernet is okay I guess if I can only find the solution in a NAS.
This has to be an all in one solution not something with a ton of cords or expansions. I already tried to get a NAS with 2 extra USB ports for additional storage but the customer wants something PRETTY and small and unobtrusive.
Anyone know of any products out there that fit this description?

i cant find windows 10 drivers for my HP Compaq dc7800 Small Form Factor PC
Hello, Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. Welcome ! I am afraid there are no official Windows 10 drivers for your computer as it is too old model created long before Windows 10 was even in the MS plans. Officially, your computer only supports Win 2000, XP, Vista, 7 Please, note that Windows Vista and 7 are still under active support by Microsoft. Windows 7 is stable and reliable OS with support till year 2020 and is the preffered business operating system (based on current statistics at the moment). I'd recommend you continue using it on this PC. As for Windows 10, if you insist on trying it, you may want to test.Do create a back-up of all your files on external media. You can get Win 10 Enterprise edition and test it for free for 90 days >> https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-windows-10-enterprise Once you install Win 10, you can try to update drivers for network, sound, video, chips, etc... using the Windows Update method or Device manager. Here is how >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03330139 Although HP does not officially support or offer drivers for W10 for this device, Microsoft may have drivers and the device might work on Windows 10 (no guarantee). If it works, you can use it. If not, just restore back your previous copy of WIndows or preferred OS. Since you already replaced the P/S, you probably have to replace the motherboard, but try troubleshooting steps 1 and 2 first if you have not done so already. http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?sp4ts.oid=3785403&docLocale=en_US&docId=emr_na-c01...1 more replies

I think I understand what you are trying to do.
To get Windows 7 on your system with a new hard drive or a old hard drive you will need to do a Clean Install of Windows 7 using a proper media and COA key. The hardware will have to be capable of using Windows 7.
You will need to buy a Microsoft Windows 7 DVD with the proper COA key.
I personally buy my Windows operating system from a local dealer.
This tutorial by Brink will instruct you how to do a Clean Install.
Clean Install Windows 7
Try using this from Microsoft and see if your hardware is proper for Windows 7.

Good morning everyone!
I have a HP Compaq dc7800p Small Form Factor PC. It originally had Vista business on it, but--for obvious reasons--I am downgrading to XP Pro. This is was supposed to be a routine wipe and install, however, I must be mislead as to which drivers are required--specifically the network driver.
I have used the following HP site to obtain my network drivers.
HP Compaq dc7800 Small Form Factor PC >> Windows XP >> Driver Network
Knowing that obviously some wouldn't work, I did try all of them out of desperation. Am I searching in the wrong place for these drivers? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hi there .. Welcome to Seven Forums ... You seem to be in the right place .. I would try the Intel Gigabit Network Drivers for Multiple Operating Systems ... Have a look at the Link below it explains your Model

After upgrating to Win10 I have some random hangs on this machin - in the middle of mailing, writing in Word etc. or the machine just sits idle and freezes up (not seen of the net any longer) - no problems in Win7 before the upgating. I have used HP Support assistent - nothing to report or download. I have System BIOS J01 V02.01 Any ideas what to do ?
#HPExpertDay Hello, When I look at the driver page for your Elite 8200 SFF, I do not see Windows 10 in the operating system list:http://h20566.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=5037932&lang=en&cc=us With that being said, it means that Windows 10 has not been validated for the unit. We can not guarantee function with Windows 10 and Elite 8200 SFF?s, however, the Windows 8 drivers will usually work for it because they both use the same kernel and core software in the OS. Hope this helped a little, thanks!

Anyone can have any solution for OptiPlex 9010 small form factor BIOS A24 to setup three monitor with VGA , display port to DVI and display port to DVI?
The configurations that support 3 displays are limited to the ones listed below. If any other type of dongle or adapter that changes the input type on a port is used (Single-link passive DisplayPort to DVI, DisplayPort to VGA, for example), the system will automatically restrict the video card to two displays. The supported three display configurations are:Two (2) displays connected DisplayPort to DisplayPort (No adapters) and one display connected through VGA. (Recommended configuration) Two (2) displays connected via active Dual-Link DisplayPort to DVI adapters (Dell Part Number 470-AANW) and one display connected through VGA. (This configuration requires 2 available USB ports) One (1) display connected DisplayPort to DisplayPort (No adapters), one (1) display connected via active Dual-Link DisplayPort to DVI adapter (Dell Part Number 470-AANW) and one display connected through VGA. (This configuration requires 1 available USB port) NOTE: The Dual-Link DisplayPort adapter has a USB and a DisplayPort connector. Each adapter will require 1 dedicated USB port.1 more replies
We have had a handful of Dell 7040SFF monitor issues. The user will be in the middle of something-online, email, reading documents and their monitor or monitors will go completely black for about 30 seconds.
Windows 7, 64-bit, 8 GB ram, Intel i5-6500 CPU
I have updated the bios, chipset, and installed the video display drivers and control panel. We have Dell monitor P2014H Flat Panel.
I even went so far to have a user's motherboard replaced. STILL that did not fix the issue.
This investigator with the issue(we are the sheriff's office) figured out the problem...
His 800 MHz police portable radio was the problem. If that radio is less than 4 ft away from the 7040 the monitors do not blank-out. So fortunately that is an easy fix.
Hello everyone,Just got cleared hard drive and don't have any CD's that came with computer.I went to HP web site and downloaded most of the drivers but unfortunately cant get one for Ethernet card. There is also a few components installed on this computer that hasn't been recognized by Windows XP.It seems to me that I don't have any dedicated cards except Video (which i already found driver for). But I have no idea how to find out what kind of network card do i have.My guess was that since there are no dedicated cards installed - from list of available cards i decided that it has to be one integrated witch again from list of drivers would be only this oneWhich when installed doesn't work. It says that something is not found. Please help!
Maybe you can find a clue in Device Manager
rightclick My Computer
click the HARDWARE tab
click the button that says DEVICE MANAGER
the Device Manager window should open
in it, locate Network Adapters and click the plus sign next to it.
Are any network cards listed there?
EDIT: also note anything in the Device Manager with a question mark or exclamation mark on it.
This is my computer (s3100n) and ths is my motherboard (M2NC51-AR (HematiteXL) and since the max PSU I could found for my computer was a 300w PSU , I decided to move into a bigger case.
Main reason; I need more power for my current video card (even more for future one) and it might be cheaper or same price as the 300w PSU, but I'll have better ventilation, more room and way better power.
So, which cases would receive my motherboard without problems?
Could it be this one maybe?
If not, could you guys point me in the right direction please?

After discovering intel's RMT option in my BIOS, I decided to look into it. It was announced in 2015, and would allow the computer to enter a low power state (<10Watt) but still be able to perform tasks (such as file synching, streaming etc). Intel put together a page for it (here) but since its launch it completely dropped off the radar.
I tried enabling intel ready mode for my two 3040M and 3040SFF machines by downloading the installer listed under the DELL's 3040 drivers (here) and on another occasion using the one found on intel's website (here).
Admittedly I'm not sure it's supported on any of the two particular models (or any computer other than intel's NUCs), but assuming that it is listed in my BIOSes and the that the 3040's drivers page states support for the 3040 family, I decided I could give it a shot!
It installs fine on both machines, the Ready Mode settings app allows me to enable it and the event viewer informs about entering Away mode when I press the sleep/power button (RMT supposedly supersedes S3 sleep mode) and what is more doesn't report any errors; but I still have the feeling it doesn't work!
The power LED doesn't change color, the fan doesn't speed down, youtube keeps playing - only the monitor changes power state (enters stand by).

Hello, currently I am trying to upgrade the memory on the elite 8000. I have come across the same error however when I try to install the memory, instead of starting it beeps 4 or 5 times and the fan eventually starts to make a lot more noise. I figured that the memory being installed must be incompatible with some feature of the computer, but I cannot find the error. When plugged into a moniter, nothing shows on the display (and im sure it is properly plugged in.) Ive tested with the old memory (4x1gb) and it works fine. Ive upgraded the OS from windows 7 32-bit to windows 10 64-bit. Ive looked into the manuals, and the memory im installing should work. i have a couple of older hp pavilions and 1 sony vaio ( i cant remember the models atm) but assuming that they are atx form factor, can i still use it on the bigger case and more powerful psu's or they r built kinda proprietary format? they were bought long time ago when u buy a system like that, they dont give u the mobo specs n stuff on the manual like when u buy the mobo itself
i know i can always get a new and improved mobo but that comes with getting another cpu; and since i'm learning to build computer (painfully slow learning process), i want to play aroud with the older parts that i have just sitting there
thank u for your time
Hi peeps i am wanting to quieten down the noise my computer makes. I've noticed that about 80% of the noise comes from the case fan.
Has anyone changed the fan on their AMD for a quieter one? but also would this give me problems with cooling?
So is it a case fan or a CPU fan?
I have an Enlight 7250 case and wanted to replace the pre-installed case fan.
However, I just found out that the fan is directly connected to the PSU (i.e. no 3-pin or 4-pin connector whatsoever). The only way to "unplug" the fan is to cut off the cable linking the fan and the PSU. Is that a wise thing to do?
Are you comfortable fitting it with a connector after you cut it? If so then go ahead, just make sure you check the rating on the fan to be sure its not using a nonstandard voltage.
If you aren't comfortable doing that then don't.
So, not much ago I found out my computer has a mere 200W PSU. Which frightens me because I am buying a new video card. And I know it needs alot more than 200w. I came across a very good PSU on new egg. I am asking this because I think my PSU is very small...or maybe my eyes are deceiving me.
But I don't know if will fit in my case...
Just for info, this is the video card.
You might have a small form factor PSU, I have one in an old HP computer, it's only 160w. You can buy more powerful ones on Newegg, you just have to look around for the MicroATX ones. Does your computer have AGP by the way? Just making sure
It would be nice if you would put what computer you have or the model of PSU, then we would know right away.
I would like to build a small machine to bring to LAN parties, etc. so that I don't have to be hauling my full tower around everywhere. I'm trying to find a small tower (2x5.25 and 3x3.5 bays) that will take a full atx board (NOT mini-atx). If anyone knows of a site online that sells them let me know. It doesn't need to have a powersupply, I already have stuff like that.
What about price? Are you looking for a high quality case with good cooling or just a cheap one? I'd suggest a Coolermaster if you want high quality.
What you're looking for is a Midtower, not full or mini.
And may i suggest you get a carrying harness for those LAN parties.
like many pc gamers i always wanted a quiet high end gaming rig the size of a console system, not just for looks but for space, i finally came as close as it can possibly get so figure i'd share my mod for others who may want to do the same. You can use all components you already have except with this case you'll need a slim dvd drive and 60mm fans.

well lucky me, I found a brand new case (after market ) at a yard sale for a dollar. It look ssuper nice with two s's! I Had a dell deminsion 4100 older model before the black cases(but still with the P3 at 900mhz) and was looking kinda dated to the shade of brown grey all the old computer turn from oxidation or god knows what???(anybody know what causes that?) any who- I switched out the main board and other hardware and perfecto- except for one thing the power switch . As it is now I am using the old gutted power button
which is on the chip with the two little buttons for power and reset. I wanna hook up the power button to the board but instead of one connector the case has each individual pin connectors seperate (which are clearly labeled)
so the problem is with connector goes to which pin.
If I had the shematic diagram for the board power switch input it'd be a piece of cake...... I can't seem to find that information though
any help would be gladly appreciated
thanks for reading this in advance
BTW it looks great except for the chip hanging out the front
plus it's gotta be an electrical hazard...
also unlike a car stereo the guess and test method could fry the board as it has no breaker or fuse in between I am assuming.
So you mean you are currently using a switch that is perminatly attached to the board from a Dell Dimension 4100? The switch on the case that you are trying to connect; is it just a power switch or a power and reset? Can you tell me also more detail about the connectors on the case (photo would be even better)?
Hello everyone, I am new here. So please, don't be mad if I don't put this thread in the correct area.
I recently aqcuired a card from a friend. He recently had purchased a newer Graphic card and had given me his old Graphic/Video(unsure which) card. I made absolutely sure the connecters were correct and that my PSU would handle it.
However, there was a slight problem when it was finally here and I was ready to plug it in. I started to insert it in the correct slot, but I found my case was too small! The only way I can think of that wouldn't require me to purchase a whole new case would be for me to cut this small piece of iron that is on the back of my computer. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if it is wise to do so.
Please, can anyone tell me if it is a good idea to do so or should I attempt to purchase a larger case in the future?
If you would like me to take a picture of the case, I can do so. Just ask! c:
A pic of the case, and where it is that you would cut would be great. Moding a case is not uncommon, I would say go for it, pending pics though.9 more replies
My wife's currently running a Dell P4 Laptop and needs to upgrade. She's a layout designer for print (Quark,InDesign, etc). So she doesn't need a killer righ, although I was going to put something very nice together for her. The thing is she doesn't want a huge case. Even a Mid tower is more than she wants.
I've looked into the Shuttle boxes but they just don't have enough expandability IMHO. Not to mention, this will be a purchase that she'll have for the next 5 years. Core2Duo, 2GB Ram to start, Geforce 8800, etc.
So I talked her into a case with a little room for cards, extra memory, etc. Now I just need some help with the box size. Anyone?
Have a look at these:
I may get one of these soon, myself
I have a Acer ASE380-UD440A case I would like to put a new mother board in.
What motherboard form Factor should I look for?
If I have a computer case how can I determine its motherboard form
factor. Is there way I can measure the case and then use a chart
to figure out the form factor?
From the spec sheet I found it says it is a "mini tower"
I would really just get a new case rather than attempt to reuse this one. This is for a few reasons;
1 OEM type cases are often proprietary ie they are not made to industry standard size; they are made to the OEM's specs.
2 OEM cases often have marginal airflow/cooling.
3 Because of reason #1, standard mb may not fit correctly or pci slots may not line up. In addition even if the boards are the same size, nothing guarantees that the mounting holes in the board are going to line up with the case stand-offs.
Type: Aluminium Alloy MIDI Tower
I got this case last week, installed last night. Great case, BUT even when you shut the pc down, the LCD lights stay on. The only way I found to get it off it to switch it at the mains.
I take it that somone else here will have this case, as its fantastic apart from this problem.
Any advise on modding it to turn the light off? It wouldnt be so bad it it changed to back lights, but its really annoying
Which LEDs are these? Are they on the case itself or on the system board? My ASUS board has an LED on it that says whether or not it has static power.
I tried to open an attachment in windows live mail and a small box appeared with a blue i and I can't get it off the middle of my desk top. i removed the HDD and the motherboard and the CD-rom ..etc and installed them to a new case
but when i press the switch button it works normally , and the screen display normally and there are no beeps , but after like 20 second my computer turns off automatically ! ,
what may cause this issue ?
could be overheating CPU. Did you apply fresh Thermal paste to the HSF after reinstalling the motherboard? Is it tight and secure? Did you blow out all the dirt, dust and debris from the fans' fins?

Now another question comes up regarding modifying the cooling of my case/ computer etc.
I was wanting to carve two 3 1/2" holes in the top of my case, for two 12cm fans. Now I know fully how to do this, however, I was wondering which direction the air flow should go. Should the fans blow into my case? (Like I suspect) Or should I have them blow out?
The orange highlights are the fans I wish to add. Which direction should I have the air flow setup?
I would have them sucking air out. Hot air rises, and the side panel fan will hit the VGA's mb, etc and spread out, also they are right next to the PSU. You wont have any really big difference either in or out , but I would have those two pulling the hot air that manages to make it to the top of the case out. and negative pressure tend to run a bit cooler overall.

Can someone post a good GFX card for no mor ethne $100 for a miini tower PC such an emachine El series etc. So a low profile GFX card. My friend does some basic gaming WoW, Moonlight etc.
i know a regular card is too big. What is one of the best 100 dolalr or below gfx cards that are low profile and can fit into mini tower PCs? The slot can be the regular PCI 2.0
The biggest problem with OEM PC's is that the power supplies aren't typically up to the task of an addon card. So it's generally recommended to replace the power supply as well. With this being a mini-tower, I wouldn't be surprised if it does not use a standard sized power supply, so that is likely not an option.
If you want to simply try a new card anyway, your options will be limited by the card size. There isn't much of a selection of low profile cards. Find the latest generation chipset which fits your budget.
When it comes to form factor. would you recommend ATX or micro ATX. I was thinking of going for micro ATX just becuase of size. Is one better than the other. is ATX is better for future upgrading? if so then i would go for that but if theres no difference then......?
I think that the only difference is essentially the size. Often, I think, Micro ATX boards are more entry-level, whereas most enthusiast/gaming motherboards are regular ATX. But if you find a Micro ATX mobo that has all the features you need, and you like the small size, go for it. Just make sure your case can support it, but I think most or all regular ATX cases will also support Micro ATX.
Hi. I'm thinking on getting a Thinkcentre m.900 Small Form Factor. I'm also planning on adding a Samsung PRO 950 NVMe SSD which has a M.2 2280 Form Factor.
From the m900 SFF specs I see that it has a m.2 slot, but I haven't found any information about what kind of m.2 slot it is. Can I connect a m.2 2280 SSD directly to the m900 SFF? Or do I have to use it with a a PCIe adapter?

Hi All, I'm looking at upgrading the graphics card in my TC-705 - but it doesnt look like there is anywhere near enough room in the case for a top end video card - so I'm looking to buy a new case (I already upgraded the PSU). Does anyone know the correct form factor of the motherboard? It looks like a mini-ATX to me. Thanks!
Hello, Motherboard form factor: DTX - Dimensions (mm): 243x2001 more replies
is uATX form factor the same as mATX (micro atx)?
microATX/SFX/uATX Form Factor - Computer manufacturers continue to want to shrink the size of their systems, and Intel has been happy to oblige, with another variant on the basic ATX theme called "microATX". As the name implies, microATX is not only smaller still than Mini ATX, it is actually smaller than even NLX. microATX is intended for the very low end market that Intel has decided to target with force.
Technically, it could be said that microATX is not even really a case form factor, because microATX is in fact a motherboard standard. However, with the smaller microATX motherboards, manufacturers are creating smaller cases to fit. To complement microATX, Intel created a new, low-output power supply design called SFX. SFX power supplies are designed to work with not only microATX systems, but also NLX and regular ATX systems, and this is why these power supplies were not called microATX. SFX and microATX are sometimes used interchangeably, or together, in describing this general physical format. The term uATX may also be used to refer to microATX form factor.
BTX is coming in 2004 anyone have any opinoins on the replacment of the 8 year old ATX Form Factor? I must admit that the quiet smaller footprint of the BTX case is very apealing, not to mention a PCI Express on the BTX Motherboard, however I just don't think it will cool very well in that small case, with all the components stuffed in to ever inch of that tiny little case!
but that's just my opinon
I have also heard that these small form factor motherboards do not perform as well as their full sized counterparts. Why not just get a full sized ATX and plop it into your current setup.
I have recently purchased an MSI KM3M-V socket A mobo which I have substituted in my eMachines W2260. The mobo was brand new albeit some 3 years old.
I have tried two brand new PSU's on the mobo; one an Antec 350W and the other a Dynapower 500w, but neither of them will give me a video signal although they power up the HDD's, Floppy Drive, CPU & Fan.
Out of curiosity I used the my old eMachines PSU, a Bestec 250w (not a wise move I'm aware), but that works just fine to the extent that I am using it to write this.
My computer is around 4 years old and I am of the opinion that the PSU form factor must have changed over that time or is there something else I am overlooking here?
Can anyone figure out what the problem is as I find it very difficult to believe that both brand new PSU's are DOA?

How can I determine what the form factor of my motherboard is? I want to upgrade the power supply to 350W or more to accomodate a new video card which requires that minimum level of ummph.
Is the Motherboard Square or is it a rectangle shape? More Square usually = Micro ATX. More of a rectangle shape = ATX. By the Way the motherboard form factor would really have nothing to do with the Power Supply you select. Unless it is a BTX (Small Form Factor for slimline computers) motherboard, you would have to find a Power Supply to fit the slim line case.
If it is one of the ATX form factor, then you should actually be looking towards a quality manufacturer 550W or better power supply.
I'm trying to replace the MOBO on some IBM 300GL's mini-towers and desktops.
I tried a 300GL mini-tower (6277-35U) with an standard ATX and it wouldn't fit, too many PCI slots.
I haven't tried the desktops yet.
Does anybody know what will fit? Did IBM make the MOBO's proprietary?
Almost surely . . .
It might be a M-ATX ( Micro ) but then it likely has a proprietary power supply and case connections . .
I have just upgraded my case - the PSU in the old case went and when I went to get a replacement he hadn't the size (physically) the one I needed so ended up buying a new case, the problem is that the new case is a lot larger than the one I had, so therefore I have purchased a 80mm case fan to put into it, the question is which way do you put them in i.e. to draw air into the case or to pull air out of the case, also there is an option to put the fan at the front or the back, which is best? Also would two fans be better than one?
I am running a MSI motherboard with a P4 CPU, and a nvidia 420ms graphics card. if this helps

My Sony Vaio VGC-RA840GI weighs a ton and I would like to take out the mobo, cpu, video card and the gigapocket TV card out and put them into a new lighter case with new power supply and bigger hard drive. Someone told me you canít do it with brand name computers (especially Sony) because they have oddball plugs and connectors. Is this true? I did note that the memory card reader and the floppy drive may not fit into a different case, but thatís not a huge deal.
Can it be done? What do you recommend for a case?
you just need to search for a case that will fit your mobo style. not sure about the whole nae brand not fitting in other cases tho.
