No Optical Drive Detected - no lower/upper filters

Q: No Optical Drive Detected - no lower/upper filters

I check My Computer and i dont see my E: drive. I checked my BIOS (i think) and i went into system information -> components -> CD-ROM and it was empty. I also checked HK something local and i found the right file some long code like 4Dxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxx and i didnt see anything lower filter or upper filter.
I have a Dell 1735 studio laptop running windows 7
heres what happened. I got an ISO of rollercoaster tycoon which i burned onto a disc on my upstarts computer (which runs XP) and i installed fine on that computer and played the game and everything was all good. I take the CD-ROM that i burned with rollercoaster tycoon and I slip it into my aforementioned laptop. some rollercoaster tycoon thing comes up, I click install and think everything is fine. When i click the .exe file to play the game, it asks me for my E: drive. i check my computer and there is no E: drive. I also cannot eject my disk now because the computer isnt detecting an optical drive, let alone a CD to eject. I also have no cd tray on my laptop, the disc just slides in and im pretty sure theres no manual eject button. I looked.
Any Help? I tried to look a bunch of stuff online. I even did one thing relating to disabling integrity checks via the command window? i dont really know what else to do. restarting and system restores didn't work.

I would appreciate any help. Thank You!

My Win7 computer just died for good, so I had to pull out the old WinXP computer from storage until I can save up enough money to buy a replacement. Unfortunately, for unknown reasons, there is no cd/dvd listed in device manager. I've spent about 3 hours online trying everything I can find to fix the issue (no upper and lower filters, I've found). I've looked at the forums here, but my computer knowledge is limited and I was wondering if anyone could help me fix this problem?

Hello - I removed my upper and lower filters so that my DVD drive would read but now I am unable to burn CD's via iTunes - is there a way I can replace those filters?

A:Upper & Lower filters - Need to replace

Only thing I can think of, would be to reinstall the programs that added them in the first place. (The filters are cd/dvd drivers/driver add-ons that are installed by third party software). In this case, they probably came from iTunes.

Otherwise a system restore would restore the registry to the state before you deleted them. Start > All programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

I dont know how it happened but one day my cd drive was not working. the tray will open fine and it even lights up however it will not read anything. When i go to my computer the drive that usually says (:e) or whatever for it, is missing. Ive been looking online on how to fix this and nothing worked, then i read to delete the upper and lower filters but my lower and upper filters are missing. How can i get them back? I read that deleting them solved the problem for some people

A:cd drive missing from MY COMPUTER. Lower upper filters missing??

It could be a hardware problem ie. seized motor in your drive.

Quick way to test this. Insert a a disc in the tray, make a note of any writing or picture you can see on the disc, push the tray in. Wait for a minute or so, then eject the disc. If the picture/writing is in the same position as when you first put it in, then your drive motor is most likely knackered.

If this is the case, only real fix is a new drive.

After having months of problems, my girlfriend finally got a replacement PC sent to her, but I've only gone and messed it up and now I'm in big trouble!

Upon arrival, the disk drive was not being recognized and wouldn't even open. I researched this and found it was a common problem, so attemted all the online fixes without success. Then, in another attempt, I STUPIDLY deleted the wrong upper and lower filters and now windows won't start at all.

Being a brand new computer there is no restore point to work from and, like I said, the disk drive won't even open to boot from disk!

So, is there any way I can fix the damage? All I can think of is borrowing and external disk drive and a copy of the CD, but I was hoping there might be a simpler way I can do this before the girlfriend comes home and kills me!

Where did you do the deletion?

If the computer hasn't had much added to it you could do a Factory Restore. How you do that depends upon the brand and model name and number, check that companies Web site.

The computer very likely has a recovery environment built in, so it's just a matter of using the correct Function key during boot to access it and then do a full restore.

Hello everyone, I really need your help. My Sony Vaio laptop (model: SVE151G13M) did not recognize my dvd/cd-rom anymore and dumb as I am, I tried to fix this myself. On the website of Microsoft I read a step-by-step guide on how to remove the upper filters and lower filters to fix this problem. However, I may have removed too many, or the wrong filters. Now my laptop does not want to reboot anymore due to missing files. I read that I can recover the system by pushing the ASSIST button, choose troubleshoot/recovery etc. The system asks me to rescue my documents first, and of course that is my main goal.. Save as many files, photos, documents and videos as I can. I attached an external hard disk with plenty of space on there, chose to rescue the files and waited. However, I have tried multiple times but it is not working (error message). Does anyone know how to replace the deleted upper filters and lower filters, without having to reboot or recover the entire system and loose all of my files? I read something about 'Last known good configuration' but I cannot find this in the options when I press ASSIST. Please, I am desperate since I am also in the process of writing my master thesis and really need this computer.. :smileysad:

I have a Sony Vaio PCV-RS420 with a Pioneer DVR-106D dvd writer. I was creating a recovery disk when after writing the DVD, it asked for a cd-r. The drive kept having errors, and I checked the media on another pc and they were fine. I saw on several posings that removing the upper and lower filters from the registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318) would fix the problem. Now it wont even recognize the dvd roma at all. The device mgr. says all is OK. I have uninstalled and re-installed the device from there, and the IDE as well, and I have phicically removed the drive, rebooted, and re-connected the drive and re-booted but to no avail. Uh-Oh - i did not back up the registry (makes me a dummy) and the recovery is not functioning due to my c partition being too small.

Everyday I upload some files to my website and to simplify my website operations, I use the same filename and just upload a file with new information every day. The case of file extensions is of no consequence to Windows 7, but it matters to my website. I want to standardize on one case and it doesn't matter which as long it's the same all the time. I have one app, the snipping tool, which seems to generally make files using uppercase, but I have some existing files that are lower case. I have tried to get rid of the lower case extensions by deleting the file and then recreating it with the same name. When I do, Windows changes the case from upper to lower. If I simply create a brand new file with no previous instances of that file in existence (as far as I know), then the default case is upper. How does one go about converting all existing files of a particular type to a standard file extension case, be it upper or lower.

A:Change file extension upper/lower case

Not sure you can as Windows is case insensative, but have you tried doing it from a Command prompt, enclosing the filename.ext in double quotes as "filename.ext"?

If that doesn't work, maybe a two step process would.

ren "FileName.EXT" FileName.EX"
ren "FileName.EX" FileName.ext"

When I try to change the case from upper to lower or vice versa of filenames n windows explorer, the changes are not accepted. Also, adding or deleting of spaces in existing filename words is also not being accepted. I have admin privileges.

Thank you for help.

A:Can we change the upper/lower case of filenames in Windows Explorer?

Hi Seymoria, welcome to the Seven Forums.

Filenames in Windows Explorer are not case sensitive. This means that for Windows, the filenames ThisIsMyDocument.doc, THISISMYDOCUMENT.DOC and tHiSiSmYdOcUmEnT.DoC are all the same, the file would be found and can be referred to using any of these or any other combination of upper and lower case letters, as long as the name itself stays the same.

Therefore, if you have a file document_1.doc but you'd like to change the first letter to upper case D, selecting rename and changing the first d to D does nothing. Windows simply does not understand it, for it there was no change as the first letter did not change.

You need to work around this by renaming the file first to something else, then rename it again to Document_1.doc, this time using the upper case D. I use a neat trick here, changing the first letter from lower to upper case: I select rename, delete just the first letter of the filename, the one with lower case, then rename again this time entering the upper case first letter.

I have a weird problem on an XP Home system that was brought in for repair.
When you turn it on, it comes up with a message. The upper and lower case of the message is switched as shown. The periods are shown as music notes! (I have shown them as as %)
If I attempt to go thru safe mode, the options for safe mode, safe with networking, etc, com up - with the same upper/lower case lettering. Choose safe mode option and you get the same message as sbove.

I booted with the XP CD to attempt repair, came up with a different error message.

I am stumped! I would assume a virus, trojan, etc.
I know I can pull the hard drive and format it in another system, then go from there, but trying to avoid that if possible!

Any thoughts on what has caused this issue?

Hi all,
My friend has an HP Pavilion DV6 Entertainment Notebook with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit installed. It's only about 3 months old. I rebuilt the unit with a fresh copy of Win 7 HP 64bit as I did not want all the bloat-ware that came with the machine.
The issue is that the unit is unable to see the optical drive (no optical drive icon). In the device manager, there is an exclamation mark next to the optical drive. It was working originally. Windows 7 normall takes care of the drivers for this drive doesn't it? Is the optical drive faulty. I've tried un-installing and re-installing but still hasn't corrected itself.
Any ideas?

A:Win 7 HP....Optical Drive not being detected...

Yes windows would normally take care of the drivers for that type of device. If you double click the device and go to properties you should see a message as to why it isn't working. See what it says and go from there. Sometimes software can mess up an optical drive, especially if it is also a burner. Some games use drivers as part of their copy protection and when you un-install them the drive doesn't work any more. Anyway see what the error message is.

My IDE DVD writer stopped appearing in Windows 7, although it is detected in BIOS. It worked fine until this problem started. It does not appear in device manager or explorer. The drawer opens and closes and the LED goes on, but it won't read or write disks.

I have swapped the optical drive for a known working drive, and still no optical drive was detected by Windows. The swapped out unit works fine on another computer.

I have installed a new IDE cable, but that didn't solve the problem. The cable is seated fully, no pins are bent, and the plug is properly oriented in the socket. The drive is at the end of the IDE cable and set to "master." There are no other IDE drives on this computer.

I looked in regedit to delete the upper and lower limits, but there were no such commands.

I have removed and reseated the RAM.

Both SATA drives I have installed work fine and there are no other issues with this computer.

I would try to repair Windows, but I can't because the optical drive won't read my Windows install CD.

I recently replaced my hard drive with a SSD and put a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium edition on my laptop. I've had a lot of trouble getting all the drivers to work but fixing the optical drive seems to be giving me the most trouble. I've looked around on this website and on several forums. I've gone into the device manager where the DVD/CD-ROM DRIVE entry only appears when I select to see hidden devices, and even then it is not the optical drive that is installed but something to do with my android phone so scanning for hardware changes makes no difference. I have seen tips on going into the registry to delete two files named upperfilters and lowerfilters, neither of which exist in my registry.  The drive can be seen from my BIOS but appears nowhere else. When I insert a disc I can hear and feel it moving so the hardware is still functioning.  When I installed the new hard drive, I did not unplug anything else so I am certain that the drive is just as connected as it was before when it was working properly. Any other suggestions?

This problem has been driving me nuts!

My optical DVD/CD burner drive is no longer detected by my computer. It is not under "My Computer" nor is it under "Device Manager" or "Disk Manager". It is no where to be found. I have checked the BIOS, and I am not certain if it is listed there. I am able to change the Boot Order and put the drive first, and when I do that and there is a disk in the drive it makes noises as if the disk is being read, and then the OS loads.

I have been reading about this problem online for days now. Everyone seems to have it, and no one seems to know the definitive solution. I tried deleting the "Lower and Upper Filters" in the registry. That didn't help. First off, I didn't have the LowerFilters, but I deleted the Uppers. I restarted, and nothing. I then created a PxHelp20 LowerFilters entry, as advised by an HP website posting. That did nothing.

I uninstalled everything related to DVD burning on my computer. No iTunes, no Nero, no DVD-Solo, no DVD-clone, etc. All of it is gone. I have defragged my registry and cleaned it using AVG PC Tool 2011 and Registry Repair Wizard 2010.

I have scanned my computer for malware/viruses using AVG Internet Security 2011, Search Bot Search & Destroy, Malwarebytes, etc. No malware, no spy-ware, no viruses.

I did what I was told and when I tried to re-start the upgrade process the disc told me that I would need to re-start my computer. I did that and when it re-started, a message from HP popped up saying that my optical drive was no longer connected and that I needed to re-connect it in order for the upgrade to continue. Hi, I've just built my own PC for the first time. It has a SATA HDD (Western Digital WD400), a DVD/RW (Pioneer DVR-109) and a DVD-ROM (Pioneer DVD-120RD). My motherboard is Asus P5GD2 Premium. The HDD is connected via a SATA cable in the SATA1 connector in the motherboard, and the optical drives are connected via an Ultra ATA ribbon cable in the Primary IDE RAID connector. The jumpers are currently set as thus: HDD - cable select, DVD-ROM - slave, DVD/RW - master; although I have already tried swapping them around. When I turn the computer on, it does an IDE scan and detects the DVD/RW and DVD-ROM as being 'Drive 0' and 'Drive 1' respectively. It doesn't show the HDD. Then when I go into the BIOS, only the HDD appears, as 'Third Master IDE'. Because it doesn't detect the optical drives, I can't install WinXP. What's going on?!

A:Optical drives not detected in BIOS

Try setting both optical drives to CS (Cable Select) then connecting them back up. That way it doent matter where on the cable you put them. I had the problem once where I had the slave on the end of the cable and Master in the middle. It didnt work. The drives showed up on the post check, but not in bios. These were Hdd's but should be the same thing.

A:Optical drives not detected in BIOS

ok. you have 1 hdd via sata correct..

why not use both ide channels for your optical drives.

set them both to cable select and put them on their own IDE cable

Neither of my optical drives are detected at boot. If I have only the hdd(master on primary IDE) connected, it will boot fine. But when I connect either or both drives no drives at all are detected and boot fails.

Here's the sad story.

I used to have a CD-R/W, set on cable select, on the secondary IDE cable. It worked perfectly. Then I swapped it for a DVD-R/W, same settings, and it worked fine too.

The other day, I decided to have both drives installed. I connected them both on the secondary IDE cable, still each set on cable select. The DVD-R/W would've been in master position on the cable. On boot, the computer would try to detect primary master, primary slave, secondary master, primary slave and detect nothing for any of them. If I disconnect the optical drives and have only the hdd connected, it will detect the hdd as primary master as it's supposed to and boot.

Now, it will not detect either optical drive on its own no matter what jumper setting I use.

I tried connecting the CD-R/W (and no hdd) as primary master, but it didn't detect anything. I tried setting the device type in the BIOS for primary master and secondary master (the CD-R/W), but that just caused it to look for the slaves (and not detect any, as expected) and then say it failed to detect the masters.

A question for which the answer may be required to troubleshoot further: Shouldn't the connected optical drive flash its light when the computer is powered on? Neither drive doe... Read more

Hi everyone. This has been happening for about 2 and a half years. Every time I update iTunes, my CD/DVD drive disappears and I have to do the Upper/LowerFilters fix. But doing this always messes my iTunes up. It removes the drivers iTunes uses for CD burning. Is there any fix for this at all? I'd really like to have a fully functioning iTunes and CD/DVD drive lol.

My operating system is Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit.

I tried booting from a knoppix live cd that worked on another computer and it wouldnt boot either. I have no idea of any what to do, since it wont boot off of an external HDD internal optical drive, external optical drive, and any help is greatly appreciated.

I disabled the optical drive from Windows System folder because it was faulty and slowing down my computer.

However, now, a virus has stopped from starting Windows.

Since this configuration of Windows on the Hard Drive, can I replace the Hard Drive with a new one so it can:

A. Reset my configuration to allow a Windows Installation disk to boot up from the "newly installed" optical drive,

B. Erase any prior infected files I may have had on the previous Hard Drive.

Thank you,

The computer is a Dell Inspirion 2200 Notebook.

I was given a pc (asus K8N-E) the problem is that although it powers up, mobo light works cpu fan spins and system fan spins front panel lights work, the hard drive and optical drive wont power up unless i disconnect the IDE cables, when disconnected the hard drive spins and the light on and drawer on the optical drive work. its as if the IDE is somehow disabled, i have tried different cables but to no avail any help appreciated.

A:Hard drive and optical drive only work when IDE cables are disconnected

check that the cables are plugged in the right way round, the red stripe on the cable goes next to the power socket on the device and the board is usually marked pin 1 or has a dot on it.

does it happen when you plug in a single device or only when you plug in both.

are you using seperate cables or are you putting both devices on the same cable.

Hi all

I have installed an optical drive in my computer today and my drive letters were changed. I have changed them back to what they were and after restarting my computer I was unable to log to Windows 8.1 due to the OS being unable to find user profile (my user profile is moved outside of the system drive).

I restored my system to the point from before the new drive installation, but I still would like to change the drive letters around, as some of my software relies on specific directory paths with drive letters.

1. The state from before the installation of the new optical drive.

System (C:)
Virtual Box (D:)
Program Files (E:)
Passport (F:)
Storage (G:)
Program Files 2 (I:)
2. The state after installation of the new optical drive:

System (C:)
Virtual Box (D:)
Program Files (E:)
Optical Drive (F:)
Passport (G:)
Storage (H:)
Program Files 2 (I:)
3. What I'd like to have:

System (C:)
Virtual Box (D:)
Program Files (E:)
Passport (F:)
Storage (G:)
Program Files 2 (I:)
Optical Drive (any letter, preferably X:)

My user profile WAS located in G:\Users

It is now located in H:\Users and I can log in to Windows. After changing the drive letters around to 3. above I can no longer log in, as Windows is unable to find the user profile on H:\Users anymore.

I use EaseUS Partition Master 10.0 to change the drive letters.

Is there any way I can change the drive letters and make Windows aware of user profile path change?

Hi all, I've recently bought a second hand Lenovo Z580 and the optical drive needs replacing. I've looked up the hardware maintenance guide and it lists the following: ODD, 12.7MM Rambo, PLDS DS-8A8SH
ODD, 12.7MM Rambo, PSN UJ8C1
ODD, 12.7MM Rambo, Optiarc AD-7740H
ODD, 12.7MM Rambo, TSST SN-208ABI'm not interested in Blu-ray combo replacement so I haven't listed those. My question is, do I have to get one of the drives listed above or can I get another brand as brand new is cheaper (see below)? I understand I would need to swap the bezel around :-) Thanks

Thanks for any help in advance, Pete

A:Z580 Optical drive (DVD drive) replacement advice?

Hi pete_agreatguy  ,
As Optical Drives are mostly universal , your choice most likely would work as SATA interface. 12.7mm height .
Challenges would only be the fitting with the mounts so do check for return option just in case.
For other resellers, it would be better if there a mention of workable model for match for chassis fittings  .
12.8 cm x 12.6 cm x 1.27 cm (LiteOn 8x Internal Slim) 128 mm x 12.7 mm x 126.1 mm (Sony)BD-5750H as one from the manual .
Hope this helps.

I should have came to this conclusion sooner, but my current re-installation of Windows has some problems that I haven't had the time to address until now. What I need, though, is access to the repair function on the disk. However, herein lies my problem...

When I boot up, media in the drive or no media, bios does not show the drive in its list. I can still open and close the drive as if nothing is wrong there, but I cannot "boot from CD". I've reset my bios back to defaults and while the drive appeared on IDE Channel 1 in the settings, it still would not recognize ANY media while booting up.

I have the latest version of my bios. I have also tried changing cables. The drive is on an IDE channel by itself.

Once my system boots into Windows, however, the drive is recognized and acts normally as if nothing happened in bios. Media operates fine. I have checked the event viewer, and there are no entries anywhere that states my optical drive has been experiencing problems, and yes, in fact it operates just like it always does.

Can anyone help me get my bios and cdrom back together again? The problem is I just do not know where to start to solve this. I wish I could say how long this has been happening, but I really don't know as of today. There have been no hardware changes in the past three months, and my current installation and configuration began back in late April.

Thanks for your time...

A:CD/DVDROM drive - not detected by bios, detected by Windows?

What is the boot sequence in the bios? should be CD or optical drive first, then Hard Drive or IDE-0 second if you want to boot from the cd-drive. Many computer manufacturers set the computer to automatically boot off of the hard drive by default so setting the factory defaults might not be what you are looking for. Look for the screen that has the boot order or sequence and just change it, exit and save settings and restart the computer with the boot cd in the drive. I hope that helps.

I just built a nice little powerhouse for my girlfriend. It's all up and running great, but I ran into a strange snag along the way.

First of all I'm using the new 915 Intel board (not sure the exact number ATM, but it is Intel brand) with a PCI Express, LGA775 chipset.

I currently have one 36.7 GB WD Raptor on a SATA connection. The only optical drive is a CD/DVD +/- RW combo on it's own (and only) IDE channel. I opened up the BIOS on first boot, and noticed that even though the correct model number showed up in the Drive Options, it was displayed as being a Floppy Drive!

Confused, I switched the jumper setting.... still no change. Switched to the last jumper setting.. tried removing the jumper completely, nope ! OK, so I decide I'll set the jumper back to the Master position and let Windows try to sort it out.

I install windows off my USB DVD-drive. Flawless install, but even in Windows it displays a Floppy Drive! There is no Floppy drive connected. I then proceed to close the case and barf all over the damn thing out of pure frustration. puke:

I'm freakin out here! I've built several computers and worked on countless others and have NEVER EVER seen anything like this. Granted, the RAID thing is new to me, and I'm guessing it probably has something to do with that.

A:Optical Drive being recognized as a Floppy Drive !

Welcome to Techspot !

I know you are experienced ,but sometimes the simple stuff.
Given the newness of this architecture I would lean towards the necessity of a bios file update.
Since the bios sees it as a floppy but has the correct Model and I take you loaded Windows from it, it obviously works.
Does your Bios settings allow you to manually chose the drive type and DMA etc.If yes
Disable all IDE channels not in use. and turn off 'auto configure '
Check the web site and tech support there could be a bug fix in the works.
Let us know how far you get.

P.S. Sorry missed you loaded from USB,However if the drive can read media etc. my point is the same.

PC has original DVD drive, added DVD burner and added floppy.

Power at least is connected to DVD (light comes on). Burner and Floppy don't have lights. Compputer does not show the drives as available.

I was selling the PC, so I deleted some apps(MS Office, Photoshop), games, etc., then ran a HDD cleaner to wipe empty space.

Tried re-seating cables, looked at BIOS, but I really don't know what I'm looking for.

First off thanks in advance for reading this! I would really appreciate some advice

I have a 17inch Macbook pro i7 laptop.

I was looking at the possibility of replacing the optical drive with a SSD drive (i never really use the optical drive anyways)

I found a place online where one can purchase the SSD drive and case so it fits into where the optical drive is also.

My question is has anybody else done this? and if so is it a good /bad idea?

And also once I replace the optical drive with SSD can I have it so my OS is working off of the new SSD drive and my original 5400rpm HDD will appear up as a separate drive for storage.
Im not sure if its relevant or not but here are the specs of my laptop

A:Which Optical Drive?

Virtually any USB optical drive -from any reputable brand- should be compatible, in addition to the ones from Dell.
Speed and features (disk formats it reads/writes) are what matter, as long as the drive supports whatever version of Windows you're using. If you have USB3 ports on the PC, look for a USB3 drive for faster data transfers.

If the problem is at the registry then this fix is supposed to work.

Try this, I hope this helps
1. Click on Start --> Run --> and type in 'regedit' followed by the enter key ( if Vista Start search or windows+R )
2. Expand the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" key (looks like a folder) by double clicking it (or
3. clicking the "+" next to it.)

5. Expand the "CurrentControlSet" Key
6. Expand the "Control" Key
7. Expand the "Class" Key
8. Please look for a key containing the following string of letter and numbers:
9. High light this key by left clicking once on it
10. On the right hand side you are looking for "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" under the "Name" column, once you find these please delete them by right clicking on them and choosing "delete"
11. Please exit the registry by clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner of the screen

Ok now i have a question... do you need a blu-ray optical drive to watch blu ray disc on your comp.. cause when i was on newegg and was looking up stuff it had dual layer dvd burner/whatever... does that mean i can watch blu ray with it? since it is a dual layer dvd. idk i was just wondering cause im wanting to get a laptop with blu-ray so i dont have to buy a hdtv and a blu ray player and be poor for the rest of my life cause then im gonna have to get hdtv cable and what not. lol.. i was just wondering what the basic essentials are for watching blu-ray disc on a pc.. or buring as well.

A:Blu-ray optical drive?

The dual layer burner doesn't mean bluray. There are Dual Layer DVDs, in fact, that is what most store bought DVDs are. Single layer will only get you ~4.3 gigs. Dual will get you about 8.5.

You can buy a bluray drive for a PC though for less than $100, and then output your video to a HDTV and get full bluray HD.

If you get a laptop with bluray and never output it to TV, you are doing yourself a disservice, because the resolution for bluray movies is going to be higher than your laptop's display can do (in most cases).

I have a Dell Studio 1735 running Vista Ultimate ....

I have it set to go to stand by when I close the Lid. When it goes to stand by and come back... The DVD-RW (My F Drive) is gone. I mean its really like its gone.

It wont read disks, eject them, or even take one. (For those you you that dont know Studios have a Slot Drive not the Drawer Drive)

It seems like there is no power to it. If I restart the PC it comes back and works fine until it goes to stand by a few times.

I have tried downloading the drivers for it and reinstalling them. Ive tried just uninstalling the drivers and letting Windows use the generic ones. Nothing works. It seems like a driver issue to me, I may be wrong I am human.

If anyone has any info much accepted!!!!

Not sure where to post this so I can move it if necessary.

Started up my laptop today and I tried to open the cd rom/dvd bay and nothing happened. It will open with a pin pressed into the release hole, but not with the button. (Asus u50f)

When I looked in the device manager there was no drive listed. in computer management/storage/disk management there is no drive showing.

I took out the drive it looks ok. Is there anyway to test it or do I need to buy one and try it?

A while back I smelled a burning smell from my computer and after some investigation figured it was my PSU. So I buy a 650( old was 750) PSU and install. I turn my computer on to find out my hhd and optical drives aren't working. My ssd which has my operating system shows some file damage on it. So I buy another ssd and get rdy for a Windows move. My new optical drive comes in and ends up not working. So I try another one from a older computer and it shows up in Windows and the light for power lights up but the tray wont open from emergency eject, regular way or from windows eject. I tested it on the old computer before and it worked. Anybody know a possible solution?

This is just a simple but a wired issue that i faced in one of my friends computer, first the optical drive was not getting detected in MY COMPUTER, I deleted the upper/lower filter and the drive was detected, but it was not recogising the disk, after i installed the firmware the media was getting detected and but it was not reading the content of any cd not even the OS cd, i followed this KB Article of Autoplay because even that was an issue - but even that did not work. The optical drive did not even boot from a bootable cd, But one thing that i noticed is that the Icon of the drive changes if there is a cd inside as if there is a cd.

What can be the issue...???

Hi everyone. I just bought a new ASUS laptop last week but then I found out that the optical drive is not working. Here's the specs: ASUS A52F-XT22 Laptop Computer - Intel Core i5-480M 2.66GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, Blu-ray/DVDRW, 15.6 Display, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Gray, 1-Year Warranty / 1-Year Accidental Damage at

At first when I started it up, the E drive showed up in "My Computer", but when I put a dvd or blu ray disc in, it wouldnt read it. The disc would just show up as a file with folders. Then the next day, when I installed some ASUS updates, the E drive icon disappeared from my computer. I pretty much tried every possible solution out there: deleting upper and lower filters (i had no upper or lower filters btw), changing the driver name path (did not work), uninstalling and updating the drive (did not work), Windows 7 troubleshooting (did not work), microsoft mr. fix it (did not work) and so on. The weird thing is that when I open device manager, it shows up there and it says that 'This device is working properly'. Also, when I uninstalled the drive and booted it up back, then when it automatically restored the drive, it said that the problem has been fixed, but it was not, there was a dialog box that said "Searching for preconfigured driver folders", but it did not finish searching.

Heres some pictures that I took while trying to fix it. (the order of the pictures go from right to left btw)

Recommend two things, first attempt to reinstall the OS, or take the laptop back and get another. Remember it is a man made device and because of that it can fail that doesn't mean the brand name is at fault. . .stuff just happens.

I don't see my optical drive on my computer window box. I uninstalled the driver for my optical drive and reinstalled it (HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T50F). I still do not see the optical drive listed. In the device status window, under the general tab of the device manager window, is shown this message:

"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

When I uninstall and allowed the computer to find the driver online, the same failure is shown. The computer window box still doesn't show my optical drive.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thinking about the fact that I had not cleaned my optical drives in a very long time, I used one of those disks with a couple of brushes attached, to clean my DVD drives. I can't be certain, but I think that it improved the read speed while encoding some video by 3-5 fps, and perhaps stabilized the speed somewhat.

That is as much as I have ever done, but being a smoker, and knowing the sticky nature of nicotine smoke, I would bet that the brushing didn't remove that. I read a couple of web pages, where it recommended using canned air to blast in the tray slot, but I tend to feel that might just blow the dust around, and still not remove the nicotine. Another metioned using a Q-Tip moistened with isopropyl alcohol, directly on the lens of laptop drives, because the lens is attached to the tray, thus exposed when the tray is open, but that is not true of an internal desktop drive.

Therefore, I'm wondering how advisable it would be to use that alcohol to moisten the little brushes on the cleaner disk for that purpose? Obviously, it couldn't be much, otherwise it would be slung around inside the drive, and likely would dry very quickly. I'm not sure if it would really make the lens cleaner, or just smear the nicotine around.

I'm hoping that someone that smokes and has tried something like this will respond, rather than others with no real experience.

A:Optical Drive Cleaning

I do not smoke and hence do not qualify for a suggestion but ranting - I never stop.

1. Do not smoke in front of the computer.

2. Just use a fine micro-fibre cloth and give some gentle wipes to the lense.( I would avoid any cleaning liquids)

I also have read that cleaning disks with minute holes that blow air on to the lense due to the centrifugal force of the spinning disks are available and is a better one than the brushes.

But in your case, a gentle wipe is perhaps called for.

My brother's been having a lot of problems with programs that use the optical drive in his new PC.

I installed a variety of programs to cover the tasks he does, including BurnAware Free. I just observed over Teamviewer that this locks up and it was impossible to kill, either via the TaskManager, taskkill or Process Hacker. It had two programs running, AudioCD.exe and MP3Disc.exe, neither of which I could kill, even after he ejected the drive (I've found sometimes that programs get locked up whilst trying to access the disc, so removing it can sometimes unfreeze them).

I then tried Ashampoo Burning Studio but that locked up and wouldn't let me kill it either. I can understand it might have been fighting for the drive with BurnAware but I still should have been able to kill them.

He has DVDFabPasskey installed, so I wonder if that needs to be shutdown before running these burning apps?

He says the BurnAware Free also told him his disc was too big (i.e. over 80mins), despite the total time shown only being 79-something minutes and that either that program or Ashampoo said there was a problem verifying after the burn, although he was able to use another program to verify (I'm not sure what he used) and that worked fine.

It may be that these programs are just buggy and as all they all seem to have issues or limitations that made them unsuitable for my brother's needs, he's now just using Nero v8 micro for his burning tasks, so let's forget about those programs, other tha... Read more

Hello Dover mate one very obvious query is has your brother tried running a disk cleaner through that drive?
Is it making any odd noises?
The other thing that struck me is the sheer number of programs that he is using not just ones that use a disk and some that I would not use at all but it is his choice I suppose.

Assuming you have a standard laptop drive, any slim optical drive will do just fine. ASUS, Lite-On, Pioneer, Sony and Plextor are among the best brands to choose from.

Hi all. I've scoured the 'net vainly for an answer to this, so I've decided to just ask it.

This seems to be common?the optical drive doesn't work. I'd like to detail more symptoms, though, that might help form a real fix for those whom the solution at The CD drive or the DVD drive does not work as expected on a computer that you upgraded to Windows Vista wouldn't work, as it didn't for me (Upperfilter and Lowerfilter values don't exist in my registry).
Upon a clean installation of Vista, the optical drive works fine. After installing the whole slew of current updates, it stops working. I didn't figure this was a thread for the Windows Updates forum, though. When putting in a disc, the drive goes to work (illuminated busy light and the sound of the drive spinning) for a bit, then turns off and on continuously, freezing the computer until the disc is ejected.A disc left in the drive upon start-up will work correctly. Once I open the drive, however, that's when it no longer works, whether I load the same or different disc.
So my question is, is there a way to fix this? Other solutions, like uninstalling the drive in the device manager and rebooting, haven't worked for me.

Thanks for the help! I hope this extra information is helpful, too.

Hello all. My cd/dvd/bluray read/write drive on my laptop suddenly disappeared. All "my Computer" shows is my C: drive, whereas I used to have a D: drive. I was uninstalling a few programs before it happened, one of which was Daemon ProTools, which I suspect to be the culprit. I read that the program TestDisk might be able to help. I've got a problem with an LG-4521B Combo (DVD/CDR/RW). The drive has been working fine until recently when it just won't read the disks that it has written in the past. The same disks will read ok in a slower MSI CDR-RW drive.

To make things even more confusing the drive is picky at reading other commercial disks. It will read the disk for Microsoft's Freelancer Game, but at the same time will not read Microsoft Flight Sim 2002. To top it all off, some disks which were written in the older MSI drive will read ok. I've tried a compressed cleaner (fellowes) which seemed to improve performance in the MSI drive but not the LG.

I've also had problems where the MSI drive will not read disks that it has written, but the same disks may work fine in the LG.

The system is running XP home with sp 1 installed and both drives are using the generic XP drivers

I hope someone out there can help as this is starting to drive me up the wall

A:Optical Drive Problems

Addendum to the above - ok I changed the bios so that the optical drives were not set to 32 bit transfer rate and they both worked. But today only the MSI drive worked. Has anyone seen this sort of problem with the controller?

Background to my problem.

I have an aging laptop which I am hoping to sell. However before selling it I first had to securely erase the hard drives contents. To do this I used the DBAN (Dariks Boot And Nuke) software from a CD. On the next reboot I got the expected "MBR is invalid " error. The XP SP2 disc goes into the optical drive along with a reboot, the message "Checking CD-ROM" appears for a while then the system jumps to booting the HDD. When checking the optical drive for media I hear the disc spin up (sometimes) along with a jammed motor grinding type noise, as though the part that moves the laser back and forth is jammed. Although when inspecting the drive closely (without dismantling it) I can see nothing unusual.

After retrying for an hour I find the furthest I get is the "Checking your computers hardware configuration" then an involuntary restart.`

I tried:
Cleaning the CD.
Blowing any dust of laser.

Although the BIOS understands this optical drive (correct name under CD-ROM) the drive is still notorious for refusing to boot CD's. So I swap out the optical drive for a spare (from an even older laptop) which I know worked last time I tried to use it to boot a CD. Things get worse, the BIOS doesn't understand this new drive and the XP setup rarely launches and never gets past "Checking your computers hardware configuration".

Now I have reverted back to the original optical drive although the BIOS now doe... Read more
