Laptop fan running constantly and getting slower by the day

Q: Laptop fan running constantly and getting slower by the day

Hi, just a quickie (hopefully).

My laptop, over the last week, has been gradually getting slower and the fans kick in after about ten minutes of use and it's really not liking it if I go on YouTube, the videos play sound fine but the image can't keep up. For the record I use Firefox and other than a good knowledge of navigating myself around my pc to be able to use the Adobe suite, the internet and torrent downloading and other such media uses, I know very little about system technicalities and therefor I am not very good at pc maintainance hence why it's got to this point, I suppose, perhaps there is just too many programs on my pc or files or the fan needs cleaning or I've got viruses or something? Well that's why i'm here I don't really know where to start. I did run CCleaner on it the other day but to no avail.

Sorry for the long post, any help would be much appreciated.

Considering what your computing habits and practices are, it's a good bet that your computer is infected and infested with viruses, malware, spyware, etc..

First of all, hello to everyone using this forum!

Here's the thing. A few days ago, I noticed something that my C partition was getting full, so I deleted a few programs and some unecessary files like some pictures etc. Along with the partition clogging I noticed that my computer boots up a lot slower than usual and some programs run slower as well. Another problem: I have a great internet connection, both fast and stable, and yet, since the problems began, connecting to sites has become a lot slower (even though it says my connection is perfect as usual) and I have to reconnect my internet in order to be able to browse for 5-10 minutes. I have scanned my computer using AVG 9.0 and I haven't found anything. I really hope someone could help me fast becouse this is becoming intolerable.

Here's a little example of whats happening with my hard drive: yesterday I cleared it out completely using Disk Cleanup and deleting some items manually. It had 1,66 GB of free space. Today when I started my computer it had 774 MB of free space. Approximately 2-3 minutes later it was on 773, even though I didn't do anything. I deleted the content of the temp folders, and I had 1,20 GB of free space. A few minutes later, it was on 1,17 GB.

Hope to hear from somebody soon, and thank you in advance.

This problem have started about a week ago...
The computer was working fine, but all of a sudden my laptop started to have internet connection problems (wireless)
The computer also takes a very long time than usual to load things, so I was wondering if it is some kind of malware/virus that is affecting my computer.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. My elderly father has been complaining that his laptop has been running rather slowly for the last couple of months ( which I took as not so subtle reminders, I was supposed to give him my current desktop once I built a new machine ). Yesterday, he said that programs werent starting, those that were running wouldnt close, and it wouldn't let him delete a file. When I took a look, the hard drive was in constant use, and it was as if some CPU and memory hogging programs were running, mouse movements were slow and jerky, clicks didnt seem to register and apps like windows explorer and chrome took about 5-10 minutes to open.My first thought was that the hard drive going bad. It soon became apparent that the drive was fine, and the problem was the computer was awash with malware and viruses.Panda Antivirus , MBAM, ADWCleaner and combofix took care of most of it,( Backdoor.bot.NET, Trojan.CryptoWall, TornTV, GlobalUpdate, Trojan.Dropper.Necurs ) but it still seems like something may be lingering about.looking over the logs below it seems like there might be a hardware issue too, or it may have been heat related due to the CPU load and hard drive thrashing.Any help would be appreciated .. Hi,

I have a dell latitude D820, Windows 7 and I have performance issues when the computer is plugged in. For some odd reasons, without noticing any abnormal CPU activity, or Memory Usage, or anything for that matter, when the computer is plugged in the Wall, it does not perform as well as when it is running on Battery.

I can reproduce this at will, especially with VMWare with Windows 2003 running in a VM. On battery, everything is lightning fast, when plugged in, it does take longer to accomplish the same set of tasks... I tried some online games from a popular flash website, and it is "lagging" when on power from the wall, and it lightning fast (not lagging at all) when on battery.

I tried different things

1) Checked Process Explorer from Sysinternals, could not find any process that was firing when plugged in the wall
2) I removed the battery all together and let the computer work without any battery (only plugged in the wall) and it is still slow
3) The computer is cleaned regularly with CCleaner.
4) the computer is defragged regularly with O&O Defrag
5) Registry has been cleaned with CCleaner
6) I stopped the defragmenter services and processes not useful when testing.
7) I tried stopping SearchIndexer.exe with the Windows service, did not help.
8) Switched the battery with another one that lasts longer, and the problem still occur.

I can't confirm if this happened with Windows XP... Windows 7 was a clean install on it.

I am not sure what else ... Read more

Older Fujitsu Lifebook N series notebook with Vista. Recently fans (2) both seem to operate at top speed as soon as the computer boots up, even from a cold start. Tried installing speedfan but it triggered a BSOD when scanning the hardware every time I tried to use it. Then tried Core Temp, that wouldn't install either. No BSOD, said something was blocking it, but I disabled Adaware and AVG. Laptop appears to operate normally except for the fan noise. Attached the hijackthis files. TIA.

ps...should have mentioned I took it apart, cleaned the fans (not that dirty), and re-pasted the CPU and heat sink.

Dear Forum Members,
Through the absolute cheapness of Microsoft, my uni only provided me w/ an update copy of W7 that I had to install over a full version of Vista. I have 1.5gb of ram and have turned all the options down for performance (e.g. looks like Windows XP.lol) and have a 7200rpm WD HD.
Here is the thing. I did a test install on my old drive (5400rpm) that was running XP Pro. W7 ran smoothly and the fan hardly ever kicked on as I do minimal tasks and have a stepped processor. When I did a clean install on the 7200rpm drive, everything was also fine. However, as I couldn't register my upgrade copy I had to install over Vista. This is where the problems started.
The computer is noticeably slower than when I did the clean install. Also problematic is that the fan seems to constantly run even when the computer is performing no task, not even word processing or internet surfing. I do not care about the noise (in XP it just used to kick on real loud every now and again), I just want to make sure that my hd/cpu isn't getting fried. It seems to indicate a problem.

Any suggestions?

Regards,
D.M.L.

Hello

new Lenovo laptop, owned three months at most
Flex 3 model, all stock
Intel i7
Windows 8.1
Yesterday, my laptop started running its fan non-stop. I turned it off and left it off for most of the day. Today, it is doing the same thing from the moment it is powered on.

In the three months I have owned my laptop, I always do a full power cycle after using it and never use it for more than a few hours at a time.

The CPU is not showing load in Task Manager, but is showing clear signs of stutter and lag when running simple processes. Trying to use the internet feels like a dial-up. The fan is very audibly running full blast, like a room fan on max setting.

Is there pre-mature failing of the heatsink, or something else that could be causing this? I rarely take the laptop out of my home, and I use a case if I do. I leave it on a hard surface - the vent does not rest on carpet or other fabrics when idle. There is no visible heat being emitted - it does not feel like its running hot, and hot air does not come out of the vent (the few times I used intensive programs, or had it on awhile, I definitely felt hot air so I know the difference.)

Is there anything I can run internally to make this change? I have no plans for overclocking, and I doubt the motherboard's BIOS would allow it, but years ago when I would do intensive desktop builds I remember BIOS settings I could change. Is there a power setting to change? Very new to laptops - I'm used to building desktops an... Read more

Hi my laptop is becoming a nightmare to use. It picks and chooses when it wants to work or constantly freeze. I'm finding that it is freezing a lot when I click on a new page and it says on the top bar 'not responding' then unfreezes maybe 60 seconds later. It just seems to be a lot slower now and i think its maybe because I have no idea about antiviruses etc and what the best software to gave is. I have MCafee and also the free version of Malwarebytes. I also have WinPatrol but only because it was recommended, I have no idea what it does or how to work it. I just want my laptop running fast again. Any help or advice is much appreciated. Here is all the desired information. I hope I have provided everything that is required. Thanks.

A:Laptop constantly freezing and running really slow

Hi Guys,

I hope I'm not repeating an issue here but I've been searching off and on for months now so if it has I must really be asking the wrong questions...

I've got a HP Compaq 8710p laptop that has been my daily-use work and personal computer for the past couple of years, over this time I've upgraded the HDD a couple of times and used the onboard HP_RECOVERY image to reinstall the OS each time. The issue I have is that for some reason the hard disk runs more or less constantly (and noisily). I'm convinced this directly contributed to the early demise of my last hard disk so I want to get this sorted out.

I've been poking around trying to sort this out with procmon, autoruns and hijackthis however as I'm not having any joy I've reverted all my changes except for switching off the various Intel AMT startup services - please let me know if you want me to turn these back on.

I've attached a Hijackthis log and here are the details from TSG Sysinfo;

Hey guys, been having a few problems with sony viao laptop recently, all started a few weeks ago with computer freezing up, which i thought i had solved with a good clean up. Since then the laptop has been running slower and slower, so today i ran chk dsk. It picked up a problem while verifying indexes somthing in directory file 8313(please forgive me if this means nothing to anyone, i am a complete novice!) It then ran thrugh the process of correcting this and went on to Verifying file index, at this point everything froze and the progress didnt move above 0%, i left it for 20 mins and still no progress, so had to turn off and on. Can anyone please help.

A:Chk/dsk wont complete and system running slower and slower

My HP2000 Laptop fan is all of a sudden running constantly, really fast and is very load. I had a tune up on it done which involved blowing out of fans, removal of viruses and malware and updates to spy & malware software...None of which fixed the issue. Seems there is something more going on as this was never a problem before this last week or so. Help!!!

Hi there, in the past week, I've started to notice my laptop behave more sluggishly and become quite slow when it would have otherwise handled the amount of applications open etc without any problems.

Scans with antiviruses over the past few weeks have flagged up removed so called viruses/ trojans , so I'm not sure whether this may have lead to my laptop suddenly becoming quite slow?

Please help :) Below is the DDS scan result and attached are the other logs requested.

I didn't think it was old enough to run this poorly.... Here is a HJT log...any help is greatly appreciated:

Hi

For the last few weeks my computer (Windows XP) has been running slower and slower. It takes 2 minutes to boot up. Programs hang up for no reason. It can be fast at the beginning (well like it was before) but then it starts getting slower and slower.

Sometimes a blue screen shows up and the computer reboots by itself so it could be a hardware error Im guessing.

I have 1 GB of RAM, 2,22 GHz, Geforce 7600.

Help appreciated

Hi,

I bought my laptop about a year ago, and back then it was absolutely amazing. But with time it has become slower, and I'm wondering if you could help me with some tips on how to make it run faster in games like Borderlands 2, Minecraft and Watch Dogs.

some of my specs are:
Intel Core i7-4700M
NVIDIA GeForce 780M
x1 SSD 125GB (Main, windows installed here)
x1 HDD 1,5TB (Secondary, steam, games etc installed here)
Resolution: 1920 x 1080

Please tell me if you need more information.

A:Gaming laptop getting slower and slower, tips needed

Defrag, clear cache's, uninstall unused programs/games.
Check for dust buildup.
Think about and take a look at the programs you now have versus initially. If they are not needed right away, set them to not auto load with windows. Run as needed instead of always on.

Check the manufacturer site for and update drivers. (Video, audio, USB, ect. )

The more stuff you add, the slower it will get, so trim it back to what you need and it should speed back up.
Also check that your antivirus has a game mode, as antivirus are the largest slowdown of a system.

I guess it is also possible that over time the PSU and hardware can wear down and have trouble performing, but try the cleaning and stuff first.

Hey guys, I am running Vista on an AMD Phenom X4 9150e with 4gb ram. My hard drive is constantly running and chugging away pretty good too, reading rather than writing i believe. My cpu and memory usage are quite high and my system is running relatively slow for doing simple things like opening a browser. I have attached a screenshot of the system resource monitor with basically nothing running but hijack this and a browser. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have run scans with malware bytes and adaware, as well as AVG which all come up clean. Hello,

Hopefully I followed the instructions as described.

My laptop has gotten slower and slower and slower. I've tried multiple "cleaning" applications but nothing seems to work. One symptom I can re-produce every time is when watching a YouTube video, it it extremely choppy. It's almost as if my PC can't keep up with the video. The audio stays constant but the video skips large amounts of frames. Also, when clicking between tabs in Firefox, it's almost as if I have something intensive running in the background. I click on the tab, then a second later it will actually click on the tab. Everything is delayed.

Hopefully this is detailed enough. I would be happy to answer any questions.

Thanks...

EDIT: I uninstalled Flash using the Adobe Flash Uninstaller before running these logs.

I have an HP Pavilion, OEM version of XP with SP2. I have Ad Aware SE, Spyware Blaster, CWShredder and Spybot Search and Destroy and an antivirus all up to date and no troubles with any of them. It is a Intel Celeron CPU 2.20Ghz with 248MB of Ram. I have about 25GB of free space left. I have defraged, ran checkdisk, deleated temp files and cookies and all I can think of but my computer seems to be running slower. It is 2 years old. Is there any FREE download that will scan and maybe fix troubles either in the registry or in my files that can work. I know to may a system restore point before editing the registry. Any ideas all I would like.
Thanks in advance
Allan

A:XP SP2 running slower

ok the main reason computers get slow are virus spyware and to many temp files on your windows folder also the registry need to be clean and defragmented i find this one to be one of the best http://www.pcprivacysoftware.com/best_registry_cleaner.html windows those not know how to do this by it self also can be you install some programs that want to start up automatically also you need to disable some third-party services that are not needed for windows xp to run properly

I just bought a new custom PC which I basically put together (with a little help). Here are the specs: Abit NF7 Mobo, Athlon XP 2200+ (266FSB), 512MB DDR SDRAM (333FSB), ATI Radeon 9100 video card, Western Digital 80 GB HD (7200) w/ 8mb cache, IMB Deskstar 40GB slave, Windows XP home. I booted up the PC and everything seemed to work ok except for one thing, it definitely ran slower than my old PC.

Note: my old PC was Abit KT7a-raid, Athlon 1.1 GhZ, 256 MB SDRAM (PC133), ATI Xpert 2000 video card, Regular hard drive w/ 2 mb cache (7200), Windows XP.

Programs seem to load up slower on my new PC. For example, it takes more time to open up outlook express. There is a longer lag time from the time I double click on the icon, until the program is open and ready to go. Everything just generally seems to take a little more time to load.

Any suggestions on what I could try. Why would this faster PC run slower than my old in performing simple tasks? HELP!!!

Could someone please check my log. My system is running slower and I am wondering if there is a way to get rid of some of the things I see in the HJT log. I have completely uninstalled Norton but am still seeing symantic stuff. Also I long longer have NetZero. My IP is netins.net. I don't want AOL. I have ran msconfig and at the present it is on normal start up. I want most things to not start at boot. Can anyone help me? I have run AVG and found no problems but I am wondering if you will. Thanks so much. Here is my log.

I have a Pentium III 933 mHz chip with a 133 FSB. A while back it started to spontaneously restart the whole computer from the Windows XP login screen just as if I pressed the reset button. It would do this several times (up to 10 or 20 times) then finally boot into Windows. After a few months of this, it gave me a blue screen and refused to boot up. I bought a second hard drive and reinstalled windows XP and it cured the problem for about a month. Then it started the whole cycle over again. The only way I have found around this is to go into the BIOS and set the processoer speed lower. I first went to 700 mHz and now I am set at 466mHz with a 66mhz FSB. Can anyone tell me what is going on, and more importantly, how can I get my 933mHz/133FSB back? Is it the chip and do I need a new one? (Someone iI know suggested that.) Thanks a lot for any help at all.

Hi guys. My computer is running a lot slower and hotter than it used to. The fans are running extremely loud even during rudimentary tasks like web browsing or listening to music. YouTube videos are also running very choppily and stutter regularly (Firefox 3.5). The entire PC just seems to be getting more sluggish by the day. I don't play many video games and defragment the HDD using SmartDefrag every few weeks. For the first time in the three years I've owned this PC, I've been getting BSODs with driver failures. This started a few weeks ago and I've encountered about four BSODs since (all general driver failure blue screens). Details of DDS.txt below, thanks a lot to all the guys who help!:

Hey guys, i have a problem with my system. Its a 2-3 year old system and im pretty sure about that if it was a jetplane before now its a bicycle.

My configuration:

MB: Asus Sabertooth 990FX
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition
Ram: Corsair 2x2gb + 2x4gb 1300~ mhz
VGA: ASUS EAH6850 DirectCU
HDD: WD (Sata 3) 1 TB 7200 rpm
PSU: CoolerMaster 650W GX

I can send u benchmark results as you want.

I tried booting with different combinations of RAM (like only 2x4 gb or only 2x2gb) so i'm sure that its not incompatibility problem between rams.

my pc starts running slow when i watch videos longer than 15-20 min, watching streams on Twitch.Tv bla bla all kinds of things that using Adobe Flash
my pc is much slower at loading games or responding than a really low configurated laptop i have

its like, i play Knight Online and i click start, on this pc it freezes for 5-6 sec, then it says its not responding, when i wait a little more it starts to load and loading part is slower too
but when i open KO on my cheap laptop i click start and its immediately starts loading without freezing and finishes before my desktop pc. and it has a intel pentium cpu, im sure that phenom 2 is better than it

I think my cpu is running slower than it should be. But im accually not sure, im also suspicious about my PSU is insufficient but i cant decide since im not very good at these things.

There are a lot of examples like above. Please help

Hi,

I started having a problem recently with my internet running slower. When I start up my computer, it seems to be fine, but the longer I am on the internet the worse it gets, until it is almost at a standstill.

I am running Windows XP SP 3, IE 8, and I recently increased my RAM from 512 to 1 G (which did not help the problem at all).

I went through a "system clean up" with Symantec to remove old files, check for unnecessary startup items and defragged the hard drive-but none of that seemed to help.

I am running Norton Internet security and it is all up to date and I think I am all up to date on all security patches

I don't seem to be having any other virus or malware type symtoms-no pop-ups, redirects, etc.

Please!!! can someone help me figure out what is going on?

Thank you in advance

A:Computer Running 10x SLOWER!!! need help

Hi,

You have 2 antivirus installed. This is not recommended as they will cause conflicts.

Please choose to keep either AVG Antivirus or AntiVir Antivirus.

After uninstalling one of the antivirus, please do the following:
Please download Deckard's System Scanner from Tech Support Forum and save it to your desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
Save all your work and close all opened programs.
Right click on dss.exe and select Run As Administrator to run it. Follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two log files will be produced. The first one, main.txt, will be maximized, the second one, extra.txt, will be minimized.
Please post the contents of the 2 log files in your next reply. 1 log per reply please.

Hi, I have an Hp Pavilion ze5570us (to be very specific) It's a notebook, but I don't think that matters.
I have a 'Genuine Intel(R) CPU 2.66Ghz' processor.
On the 'General' tab of the 'System Properties' window is says it there, and then underneath that it says something like 1.60Ghz or 956Mhz, which I believe is the speed that it is really running at... that number changes all the time...
My question is, why does my computer run a whole Gh Slower than it says it is supposed to? Is there an option or setting somewhere that I can change to get it to pick up the pace?
I would appreciate any help on this, cause I have no idea where to even start (besides here)...
OK, thank is advance

~Michael

PS: I attached a picture of my system properties and the dxdiag window.

The computer on my desk is really starting to slow down (XPpro Pent 4, 1.6mhz with 1gig ram) I run Disk Clean up every week or more. I looked at task manager and there are only the applications I am running listed, under process's there are 43 items listed which seem excessive. What should be my first step be to find whats going on.

As always thanks in advance, you guy s are great.

Hi there, I'm new to the community. I read an earlier post from a guy who's computer was "running ridiculously slowly," and saw the steps that one of you walked him through to help rd his computer of malware and other things that may be slowing it down. I would love if someone would be so kind as to walk me through similar steps, my computer is just not the same anymore, I can't even scroll down the forum without it taking 10 seconds to load.

I'm running Windows 7 on an ASUS X53U Series laptop

I recently ran CClener and Spybot but things haven't gotten any better, in fact, now that Spybot and Avast are both running in the background it's slower than ever before.

Please help, thank you!

A:Running slower than normal, can't see why!

Type, brand, age of computer?

If home built, mobo model?

In general, an older computer (let's say older then 2 years), can become choked with bloatware (which often comes with a brand name computer) if you aren't careful when downloading software you actually want.

This sneakware is installed when you don't 'check' or 'uncheck' the various offers that come with most programs. Or if you just go with the defaults. Ask software is great for this type of abuse.

These unneeded and unnecessary programs track your movements around the internet constantly, collect that info, then send it back to home base. Then ads are thrown at you based on your surfing. All these bloatware programs want to run continuously, even if you aren't surfing, stealing your resources. Even seemingly benign companies do this...like Epson and HP printer software.

What you might consider doing is installing RevoUninstaller free version, and using their 'Advanced' mode, remove all programs you haven't used in the last 6 months.

In all of your browsers, remove all add-ons you don't use or seldom use. Remove all toolbars, some my require that you use Revo.

Finally, we never recommend that you install more then one anti-virus and anti-malware (or combo) program. Running more then one at a time can cause severe slowdowns as they each use resources while they check for traffic that comes in off the internet connection. When I'm cleaning a computer, I always shut down the internet connection (unplug the cable... Read more

Ok, now bear with me here...

I had an old nVidia card, the TI4600, which was doing ok except with my games...the would lock up continually no matter what drivers I used.
So I got the ATI Radeon 1600 pro for AGP(8x), since my pc is 4 years old and I had an AGP 4x slot and do not (obviously) have those new PCIe slots. I heard that an 8x would work on a 4x slot if the voltages matched, which I guess they do since nothings been fried....

Well to install it, there's a cable (that came w/the card) that plugs into the power supply; and then one end into the card, the other onto the HD (I think its on my primary slave drive; I have two HDs). I think my power supply is 230 w and they recommend a 300 or more...
To plug the one end into the power supply, I had to disconnect one of my cd-rom drives (no biggie) b/c that's the power cable that came directly from the P.S. (see attached image for what I mean). I also had to disconnect the power cable from the HD I used in order to use the power cable that came with the card.

Now it takes about 4x as long for windows to boot up, my HD LED is ALWAYS on, where it used to be on when the HD was spinning (so more randomly), I've had a couple hangs just doing normal things, where nothing would work and had to re-boot. I think its the PS but what do you guys think? Should I connect it a different way or send it back?

Thanks

Good evening,

Thank you so much in advance for the help. My computer is running Windows Vista Home and is 32-bit. It has been running slower than it should lately and I'm not sure what the problem is and I appreciate any and all help y'all can give. I ran the DDS and GMER scans and included the logs. Is the CPU's FSB to blame, or am I supposed to tweak some settings in the BIOS in order to get the speeds the RAM was designed for?
First off, my specs:

Gigabyte P35-DS3R Mobo
Intel P4 531 - 3.0Ghz 200MhzBus 800MhzFSB
Corsair 2x512MB PC 6400 RAM - DDR2 800 4-4-4-12
I recently tried out the CPU-Z program only to find that (under the SPD tab) that the frequency was at 400Mhz, with the right timings listed under. Then (under the memory tab), I found this:

Frequency - 400~Mhz
FSB: DRAM - 1:2
CAS# Latency - 5 clocks
RAS# to CAS# Delay - 5 clocks
RAS# Precharge - 5 clocks
Cycle Time (Tras) - 18 clocks

Is this supposed to happen? Are the timings supposed to be this loose? Isn't it supposed to run at a frequency of 800Mhz?

I have a moderate understanding of PCs, and I built this one myself; but I have no clue what to do when it comes to over-clocking and the details. Can anyone explain this?

A:My memory is running slower than it should.

DDR RAM is Double Data Rate, which means the Frequency listed in CPUz is correct (400x2 = 800mhz).

However, your timings aren't right. You might need to go into BIOS and change them yourself to 4-4-4-12. I'm not too sure, but this might be caused by JEDEC's specs for DDR2 running at 800mhz.

While you're messing around with BIOS, you might want to try tighter timings

All 4 of my games, Counter Strike 1.6, FATE, Call of Duty 2, and GTA San Andreas were all working just fine a week ago, they would run smoothly without a problem.

But now, for some unknown reason, they all run very slowly.

And the problem is, I don't know why! It all just happened out of the blue!

I didn't install any new hardware, I didn't change any of Window's Settings or the game's settings, Audio, Visual, or otherwise.

I ran a virus scan using an up-to-date virus scanner and my computer was clean...

So, I need help. Why are all of my games acting so slow all of a sudden?

Hi, firstly I am going to list some of the symptoms followed by what actions I have run to try to sort them out.

I think it might be of importance to note that I have just found out that my XP is not genuine.. I know, I am a fool!)
On Start up:
1. Win Defender no longer available - fine, I have disabled it but on startup, het the usual error 0x800106ba.
2. I am suddenly getting a message saying about Windows File Protection etc etc.

Other:

1. Low on Virtual Space (what is this??)
2. Spyguard notifies me of potential hijack protection alert, mainly about IE search bar being changed from .... to/...do I want to keep mew, or restore old. I get about 10 or so of these at one time

Major Problems:

1. My entire system is literally crawling along, internet, outlook, windows, task manager etc, loading time is beyond human patience. You name it. Even opening a new tab is ridiculous, and all attempts to open a program or file etc results in the new page temporarily opening and sort of hiding the initial page.
2. Many programs freeze and then "program not responding etc etc " Even the mouse pointer keeps freezing. And just scrolling down a page is also a problem.
3. The actual processer (have totally had a major mind blanj for the proper name), makes a constant noise, I believe which is made by the fans. But, it has plenty of air, and the (box thingy !?) is relatively cool. I am thinking (perhaps in my ignorance) that what is happening here is t... Read more

A:Xp Running Slower Than A Tortoise..

Hi there.
I'm sure the guys here would like to see the results of HJT. Don't worry, we know what it all means

My own advice is that your disk is probably too full. Only 17% disk space left is not an awful lot.
A certain amount of disk space is required in order for your computer to move things around so when it starts running low it can do less things at once.

I'd recommend running Disk Cleanup:
Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup

This will help you remove unnecessary files and archive some old ones to free up space.

To answer your question: virtual space may be referring to virtual memory - a section of your hard disk that Windows uses as if it were RAM. This too is linked to you running out of disk space.

Hi, I would really like some help with this. My problem is that some games run slower than they should for the computer build that I have. I haven't been able to test all my games on this new computer, but the two that I mainly notice now are Company of Heroes and TESIV: Oblivion.

For Company of Heroes, I simply cannot max it with the DirectX10 settings and everything else, I come close, but I should be able to max. (specs soon) If I set in on max, I get mainly choppiness, not so much slowdown in FPS, but just hitches all the time.

For Oblivion, first off yes my Oblivion is modded with FCOM and some other stuff, but I modded it correctly. it runs pretty well indoors with all settings max and HDR enabled, but outdoors it gets choppy, kinda like CoH. Its not the worst ever, but pretty bad, especially when I know I should do better.

My Specs:

Windows Vista Home Premium 64 Bit
Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P Mobo
8 Gigs DDr2 800 MHz Memory
3.16Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 with cooler
896MB nVidia GeForce GTX 260 GDDR3
850watt Antec TruePower Quattro TPQ-850
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE 7.1
Raidmax Black Sagitta 2 Case
500 GB HDD (I dont know the exact one right now, my first crashed and they sent me a new one)

I think thats all, I could probably provide more if needed.

By the way, this custom PC was purchased from ecollegepc. I'm assuming they set it up right. Looks fine to me though.

I've got the latest graphics drivers. I think I have good motherboard drivers... Read more

Hi,
Really don't see anything to remove in your log now, but:

You are using an outdated version of HJT, please download the one below, it automatically installs to a folder in Program Files for you. The newer one does show more than older versions do in XP. At least you will have the newest one if anything gives you trouble in the future.

Just ignore your older copy> you can delete it later.

Ive recently just built a PC for a mate. Using a mixture of new and oldish parts. Iv got a problem where i think the CPU speed is slower than it should be.

Its a Sempron 2800. What is its actual clock speed, cos at the mo it is running at 1.6ghz which i thought was a bit slow. Its on an Epox MBd with 512meg RAM.

Its a Socket A motherboard and says on the box sempron ready, but in the manual its says its Athlon and Brton compatible. It fit snuggly enough.

Any suggestions.

A:Computer Running Slower than before

Many guides for "Clean Install." Here's the one I used. It has screenshots:
http://www.theeldergeek.com/xp_pro_install_-_graphic.htm
The installation is not that problematic. What is harder is getting the new installation updated and configured, and then loading all your favorite applications--and configuring them. "Slowness" can be many things, but on older systems it is usually too many background processes consuming system resources. See if my "Start-up" post is of any help: http://doc1101.vox.com/ Scroll down the page a bit. It's in the middle. To visit the links, just copy and paste to your browser address box in a new tab.

OK, I recently had my Dell Laptop crash so I went through the whole reboot process. I then downloaded and installed all the recommended programs for spyware/viruses/etc. After I did all of this, I had to reboot my computer: I timed how long it took to start (from the Dell screen) and it was fully functional after 40 seconds. After I "fixed" the startup registry, I had to reboot again...and it took over 2 minutes! Does anybody know what I could have messed up???

A:Computer Running Slower

Does it take 2 minutes bootup every time or was it only the 1st time. What is your description of "the whole reboot process" and what is "fixed the startup registry". I'm not familiar with these terms.

hey everyone. i'll try to describe this the best i can. i have basically a brand new dell vostro 400 computer. i'm running at&t 3.0 wireless internet connection. so i've been happy with my computer since i got it. i wish i had a faster internet connection though but at&t is the best in the area.

anyways, i have a subscription with avg for virus, spyware, adware etc protection. the problem is that my computer is running slower now. for instance, i can't load pages as fast and it's choppy kinda(hard to describe) even when i try to scroll down and up from pages. the reason i think this has started happening is because i have downloaded too much music on limewire. i just got a ipod and was excited so i downloaded a number of songs and since then it's noticeably worse. a couple times i downloaded songs that weren't songs i think even though it was labeled as the song. you couldn't play them and there was always a message. i would immediately delete the file afterwards.

i've had avg since i had the computer but i don't know how well it does to protect. i run random whole computer scans all the time and it hasn't said there is a virus. it always says there were a bunch of warnings and then i heal them or whatever. so i'm not sure if i'm even using the scanner properly.

if you guys have any suggestions or any idea what i should do, i would really appreciate it. i want to remove limewire but i can't find the add/remov... Read more

Hi,
I got a new motherboard and CPU fitted by a friend who owns a shop, its a AMD Septon 3300+ but it's running at 2GHZ.

I checked this speed in bios, dxdiag etc, and all say same = 2GHZ.

My CPU FSB is runnning at 200 and it seems to crash if I up it. I had to take the battery out of the motherboard to restore the defaults.

I rang my friend and he says that the system will be faster than my previous Intel 2.4GHZS etc

I am now confused and wondering if I should be concerned.

If this system is better than my old one, shouldn't the speed be better?

Advice welcome
Thanks
Dan

PS I have ASUS K motherboard

A:Processer running slower than advertised

The sempron 3300+ does run at 2.0Ghz, that is the correct setting. But a Sempron at 2.0Ghz is actually faster than a Pentium4 2.4Ghz.

The pentiums work faster, but the AMDs do more per cycle so you can't really compare them by their speeds alone.

Here is a good comparison of the various processors for you: http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html?modelx=33&model1=263&model2=229&chart=74

play around with the various benchmarks to see how your sempron actually outperforms the P4 2.4Ghz.

Hi-My HP desktop (XP Home) has been slowing down on all apps. Everyday it seems a little slower. McAfee, Spybot, Adaware come up clean. Every night, the computer does a full anti-virus run (McAfee) and then a HD defrag with Diskeeper. And the machine still runs slow. I'm connected to the internet via Verizon DSL through a router -just for laughs, I ran an old Dell with WinMe on the same router and the connection speeds were much faster than the HP.On start up, I get a window marked "Common" that I have to manually close.I'm including a HJT log- any help will be appreciated.-CarlBegin log:Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 12:33:34 PM, on 10/11/2008Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16705)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\aawservice.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService.exeC:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exeC:\Program Files\Executive Software\Diskeeper\DkService.exeC:\PROGRA... I don't have espn, so I have to watch the bowl games on vipbox.com
my computer has been running slower and I don't know if it is related.
I had tried to close a pop up and it was blocked.  I then had a warning message that a malicious program was blocked that would try to remote access my computer.  This was a couple of weeks ago.

Windows 8.1
I have malwarebytes full version, avast free, and AdBlock all running.
Neither Mbam nor avast has detected any viruses.

I must admit I have only had it for about four months and am not very familiar with it yet.  It could be as simple as doing a system clean up and deleting cookies.

I had also installed WinRaR in an attempt to transfer my Panasonic video files into something I could use, but it wouldn't work.  I haven't uninstalled it yet.

Thank you for your time.
Tad

A:Toshiba Satellite running slower

The decreased preformance may be the result of all the antivirus programs you are running. Avast takes up a decent ammount of processing power while active, as well as MBAM.

hey,
i am a constant user of Adobe Premiere Pro, and i normally used it on my 32 bit installation of Windows XP. but when i installed a 64-bit version of Windows XP and ran Premiere, it lagged. badly.

any ideas?

something tells me that it is because it's running in 32-bit compatibility mode...

an extract from part of the adobe website:
"After optimizing and architecting three versions of Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects for 64-bit systems, Adobe has decided that future versions of Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects software will offer native support for 64-bit operating systems. Because 64-bit operating systems offer superior performance, future releases of these products will not be supported on 32-bit operating systems."
that leads me to believe, as they said 'Future versions of Adobe Premiere Pro...'

yea.

something also tells me that the only way around it until they come out with CS5 (oh geez, the 5th one ) is to install 32-bit windows XP

opinions? i've sided with installing 32 bit.

Hello. I run a Win98 Gateway 366mHz with Celereon chip, and recently upgraded from 64 MB to 256 MB. The ram is installed correctly, as the system displays the correct amount at startup and in the My Computer properties screen; however, the computer appears to be running slower.

The problem is most noticeable when I'm playing MP3s. If I'm running Internet Explorer and Winamp at the same time, songs will start skipping everytime I click on a link. This happens regardless of which audio program or web browser that I use.

I've updated the drivers on my system, have run VirusScan and ScanDisk, and freed up a lot of space on my hard drive with my no improvement. Any other ideas on how I can solve this problem? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.
