Strange Boot-Up Problem Compaq Presario

Q: Strange Boot-Up Problem Compaq Presario

The symptoms of this problem are so specific. I hope someone recognizes them.

My computer will not finish booting normally. The screen will either remain totally blank or else it will begin booting only to go blank or sometimes some small section of the screen will be repeated all over it. The boot up process always fails in one of four places:
1) The screen will remain totally blank on power up.
2) The COMPAQ logo will appear for 2 or so seconds then it will fail.
3) The COMPAQ logo will come and go, then the cursor blinks in the upper-left corner for a few seconds, and then it will fail.
4) Windows will start loading and "Microsoft Corporation" will appear on the screen for about 1/2 seconds, then it fails.

On all occasions, the fans and LEDs will turn on, and the HD and DVD make noises.

This is the part I hope will be a huge clue to some of you out there. If anything appears on the screen during two consecutive attempts to turn the computer on, then it will always successfully finish booting on the latter attempt. It will never finish booting unless this happens.

What is strange is that it seems to know whether something appeared on the screen during the previous attempt, because during the one immediately after that, the screen almost always remains totally blank. So at most something will show on the screen only every other time I turn the computer on.

It usually takes a large number of tries before something will appear on the screen during two consecutive attempts to turn it on. Sometimes it takes as few as maybe a dozen tries, other times it takes some 14 hours of continuously turning the computer on and off and on again.

Unfortunately the average number of attempts it takes to successfully turn the computer on seems to be getting longer as time goes by.

Here's another clue. Only manually holding the power button down to restart the system will ever result in anything appearing on the screen. When the computer tries to automatically restart when a boot has failed, if I leave it alone, it will cycle through automatic restarts forever without anything ever appearing on the screen.

---------------------------------
Additional details:

When the computer does successfully finish booting, it will operate normally for up to days at a time (until I turn it off) with no problems at all.

There are no error messages of any kind, except after windows tries and fails to load, on subsequent attempts it will say "windows failed to start. Begin Start Up Repair? Or Start Windows Normally?" <--Paraphrased.

A "Hard Reset" has no effect. (i.e. removing the battery, unplugging the computer, and holding the start button down for 2 minutes)

It makes no difference what mode I try to boot into, I've tried all of them including SAFE, and the various RECOVERY modes. the problem also occurs while booting UBUNTO from a USB flash drive.

I've done start up repair and have successfully completed a reinstall of vista. Neither has had any affect on the problem.

If the computer enters sleep mode or hibernation mode, it will never "wake up" and I'll have to go through the whole ordeal of trying to turn it back on again.

----------------------------

I don't know for sure that this is related, but when the problem first began to occur, it was accompanied by another problem. That problem was that when the computer finished booting it would try to go to the login screen and then would fail with this message:
"LogonUI.exe -- BadImage "gdiplus.dll"

A complete reinstall of vista eliminated that specific problem.

Hi,
My Compaq Presario 2100 boot up to this:
PreBoot Execution Evnironment
PXE_E61 Media Test Failure. Check cable.
Then tries to reboot again.

Then I use the QuickRecover CDs that comes with my laptop. I get this:
Exception 0E ErrorCode=0004
CauseWay Error 09 Unrecoverable exception.
The CD eject.

Then I try to boot from the MS OS CD.
I managed to get into the recover mode and get a c:\
I tried chkdsk, fdsk, but got invalid drive.

Looks like my harddrive is gone.
Questions:
I want to get a bigger drive 40GB from the same manufacturer(Toshiba), will it be compatible with the BIOS, etc?
I tried to manually pull out the harddrive from under the front of the keyboard. But I don;t want to break anything in so doing. Any ideas?

Any suggestions is much appreciated.

As I ahve been working with computers my whole life you must be one person that might not know a lot. I am not calling you a liar or anything but I do not believe that your hard drive is under the keyboard as HP owns compaq and I ahve not seen an HP note book that has a Hard Drive under the Key Board. I believe your hard drive is under tha lab top or at the front. Mind it being you will have to take some screws out and go hunting.

On anoter note if your Hard Drive was fried yur lap top would not even reconize it. There for Ibeleieve it is a windows installaion problem I think yiou said you are using Win XP. If you are do a full format of your Note Book and try to reload the boot disks. If the boot disks dont work the just load windws as your boot disks might have a problem or are corrupted with scratches mis use etc.

Need any more help IM me.

The whole unit acts as though it is in sleep mode.

I am gussing the power supply failed, anyone else have any experence to the contrary or have other ideas?

Hi all,
I have a Compaq Presario 6300us that fails to boot. It goes into the POST and gives me one long beep, then after a few seconds repeats. I have looked around for Compaq POST codes but have not found any for the newer MB's. Anyone know of a site with newer POST codes for Compaq's? I tried the Compaq/HP site but it is only the basic information (installing, drivers etc) and not what I am looking for. Any help is apprecated.

Hello everyone!

I have been having this issue recently that I need help with. I am fairly clued up when it comes to computers, but this one has me stumped.

I have a COMPAQ Presario F500AU
1.8GHz AMD Turion x64 X2 Duel Core processor
Nvidia GeForce 6100
Broadcom Wireless
15.4" WXGA Widescreen LCD display
Windows 7 Ultimate beta Ver. 1000 (Windows Vista Home Basic was standard with it)

I recently had to take my DVD drive out and re-insert it due to dusty contacts. I put my laptop back together and inserted the DVD drive back in.

Please note, when I did all this, I was wearing a static strap connected to the computer while working on it on an anti-static mat with the mains and battery disconnected from it.

When I insert my DVD drive into the laptop, my laptop lights up, but I get no video signal. After about 30 seconds my computer turns off and on again. If I take my DVD drive out of my laptop, it boots as per normal.

Has anyone got any ideas as to how I could solve this issue?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers,
David

There are strange noises coming from the inside of my laptop. It makes a crackly noise like static and a screeching noise like a fax machine or an old modem.

It doesn't happen all the time, but it's worrying me. There's a history to this. I bought a laptop a couple of weeks before Christmas, but it seized up and refused to boot either normally or from the recovery drive. This happened within 2 days of buying it and shortly after hearing noises like those I've got now.

The first one couldn't be repaired but it was exchanged, no-quibble - immediately, so I've had this one for a few weeks. The fact that I'm hearing strange noises now from this replacement makes me think that either it's normal and was nothing to do with the crash, or that this model has a failing somewhere. I've googled and can't see anything relating to either.

Any ideas?

A:Compaq Presario CQ60 - strange noises from inside

Take it back and let them hear it. It's up to them to make good on whatever purchase you've made. They may well have had more than one complaint on these particular laptops and know there's issue with the bunch of them. Don't be concerned about getting what you've paid for. Jazz
No this shouldn't be happening.

I just bought and set up a new computer system, and am now trying to get my old one to boot, so that I can migrate the files needed for the new system. The monitor doesn't come on, and all I'm getting is a fast blinking green light on the tower. I've un/replugged all cables and power cords, and I know the monitor is OK because it belongs to my husband's matching computer, but my old one won't boot.

As soon as I start up the computer, the bios page appears with the options (Settings) (Boot Menu) and Recovery. I have tried entering all 3 of these operations and there is no response. The computer will just sit at te bios page for hours if left untouched. This is a 2005 computer. Did it just die or is there another cause to this problem?

A:Compaq Presario SR2050NX won't boot up

To pinpoint the problem you need to do some troubleshooting procedures.

Go here;

http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/580000-troubleshooting-guide-problem-builds.html

and follow the instructions under the section "You assembled the system, and it will not post"

Whether the machine is old or new the troubleshooting is the same. On an older machine the problem is likely the motherboard, however you need to prove the board defective before you replace it.

I have the above laptop and recently I had problem with it being the fact that it will not boot properly. Each time the power button is pressed, it will only try to boot for less than a second and it will shut off again. I have tested the ac adapter and it appears fine. A few of my friends said it could be a motherboard problem. Has anyone had this issue before? I was wondering if anyone knows exactly which part of the motherboard that is faulty so that I do not have to replace the whole motherboard.

Any suggestion or inputs in resolving this will be greatly appreciated.
By the way, everything is standard, has not been modified or changed.

Thanks!!

My boyfriends desktop which is a compaq presario that runs on windows xp crashed. It managed to start up in safe mode once and he backed up his files but now the computer will not boot at all.

You can turn it on, fans go and it lights up but the monitor only goes to a black screen with a blinking underscore in the upper left hand side. No F keys work and nothing happens when you press things. The only thing that responds is Ctrl+Alt+Delete, this restarts it but it does the same thing.

I have windows 7 and attempted to just boot that but even with the disk in the computer nothing happens. Still the black screen with blinking underscore. Nothing has happened recently to change hardware, wires or anything inside the computer and we have unplugged it and dusted the inside of the tower.

Any tips would be great.

My wife's PC is off duty due to something went wrong. Here's the story.
I can start the PC with the front button, the green light come on and the two "fans" run like ...too fast. That is as far as it goes. The monitor says. "no video signal." I have a green light on right next to the power cord plug-in. The fans seem to run much stronger than normal, and nothing else happens. NOTE: I "cannot" turn the PC off by the from start/off button, I have to unplug the cord to shut it down.

Any idea where to start checking here?

Okay, sorry for the very little information, but someone that I know called me up and told me that "Their compaq Presario won't boot from a CD and they tinkered with the Boot up settings already, and it won't boot from the cd, because they had Vista Premium and they screwed it, and now they have Business, and it doesn't have any of their stuff on it. The CD is apparently a Backup cd, so if you have any suggestions on what to do, I only use dell computers so I am not totally familiar with the configurations of the boot menu right now.

ubuntuuser said:

What does that mean? Why did they go out and buy Business when they had Home Premium?

I bought a Compaq Presario about 6 weeks ago. No problem booting from a Restore DVD. Is his computer still under warranty? If so, I think he should call HP tech support. Also, did that computer come with a Restore CD/DVD or did it have a Recovery partition on the hard drive? It most likely had the latter; it would definitely had one or the other.

In what way did your friend "tinker with the Boot up settings"? Let's face it, your friend appears to be not very computer savvy. That's going to make this more difficult.

try removing all power supplies, then holding the power for 30-90 seconds, then replace the power supplies and try booting again. if that doesn't work, there may be a problem with your RAM. try reseating the RAM next.

Okay, so this has been really frustrating me for a while. I mean, this laptop isn't one I paid a whole lot of money for or anything, but all the same I'd like to get it working.

I know for a fact that some aspect of the monitor, video card, or connections between them and the motherboard is shot. The backlighting on the LCD screen at the very least is broken. But thats okay, I want to use it with an external Monitor. Anyways, I'll try and be as specific as possible in describing my problem.

There's something wrong with the battery, because I can't even get a response from the power button without the powersupply attached.

Now, even when it's not turned on, the blue LED for the battery indicator is ALMOST always blinking. I've noticed that Scenario 1 only happens when it is blinking
Power LED- the one on the left
Battery LED- Middle one
CD LED?-one on the right

Okay, so the basic specs-

Compaq Presario F730US
RAM- 2x 512mb chips, 1Gb total
Now, what happens-

When I start it up, one of a few things happens

1)The left most LED turns on, then the right most, then the touchpad LED flashes, the powerbutton flashes, green light on the CD drive flashes, then everything shuts off

2)The left most LED turns on, then the right most, then the touchpad LED flashes, the powerbutton flashes, green light on the CD drive flashes, then everything shuts off, then starts all over again, without stopping

When he tried to press any of the "F" buttons (example F1, F2) it just beeped a weird beep. I don't have any idea what it could be. Hi. I have a problem with a Compaq Presario running XP Home. I took the CD player out and cleaned out broken pieces of a CD that was destroyed in it. I got it cleaned out, put back together and now the pc won't boot up. I don't know what went wrong. Cleaning the CD player was quite easy and went back together okay. I hooked all of the wires up the way they were.
On the front of this computer, there are two lights. One on the left which is green, and one on the right which is orange. Normally, when the power button is pushed, the green light comes on first, then the orange light comes on during the loading process. You can see the boot process on the monitor.
Now, after hooking it back up today, when the power button is pushed, the green light comes on, then the orange one comes on and goes back off after a moment. The green light stays on. Nothing at all shows up on the monitor, not even a blinking cursor -- it just stays blank. It stays that way indefinitely -- nothing.
The monitor light is on so it is apparently getting power, but shows nothing. I'm sure the monitor is hooked up correctly; it can only be plugged in one way.
While I had everything unhooked and was cleaning the CD player, I plugged the CD player back in for a moment and plugged in the power cord to the pc and pushed the power button. The power came on and allowed me to eject the empty tray. I did this to get the tray out of the way so I could clean beneath it. I tried to turn the power back off... Read more

Hello
Dinosaur Compaq Presario 4660 on windows 98.
Won't boot. The power is on, but there's no beep.
The hard drive doesn't seem to spin, but there is power to all the peripherals.

Thoughts on a solution? I took off the cover and couldn't find a bad connection.

Thanks
Shannon

A:Compaq Presario 4660 Won't Boot

Sounds like its not even reaching POST (Power On Self Test)

To start to boot, the power supply must reach the correct state and issue a Power_OK signal to the motherboard, within a preset time (about 0.7 seconds).

This is detected by the motherboard which resets the CPU and allows the boot process to start.

But, if there is a problem with the CPU or motherboard, the reset will not happen either.

So the problem could still be the PSU, or the CPU, or the motherboard, or 1500 other bits.

There is no easy way to find the problem apart from substitution by replacement at the end of the day. The HDD not spinning up does tend to point to Power Supply Unit first though.

Did the hard drive die or is the power supply not putting out enough power? All the fans are running.

A:Compaq Presario S3100NX now won't boot

Sounds as though it was trying to tell you that it was overheating (CPU) and then it died !

Your best option would be to remove all power and open the case and inspect.
Warning: Hardware experience required, and knowledge (manual) of your system

From there, I'd firstly say remove all dust, so as to view the capacitors on the M/board and heat marks.

At last you should begin to remove non-essential components.

Before attempting all this - I must stop and ask you is this what you are comfortable in doing ?
Otherwise a PC service technician may be required

Also given the age of the computer, is this worth it to you ?

I have a Compaq Presario 1215EA and last week it started giving a lot of problems. I was working as usual and the screen simply freezes with no apparent reason. I reboot and some minutes later the problem again. Sometimes it freezed after some minutes, others it would stay for over 2 hours with no problems.
Last friday it decided not to boot. I press the power button, I hear the fan running but nothing happens, no Compaq Logo, no beeps, nothing.
I think this might not be a power problem because the fan is working.
I already tried the CMOS clear by removing the CMOS battery with no luck
Anyone have any idea where might be the problem?
Do I have to send it to repair center ? I would prefer not to because the warranty has already expired and here they charge a lot, sometimes to do almost nothing.
Can I do something to try to pin point the problem?
Thanks in advance for your help.

As the title states, I have a cq56-219wm. The LED code leads me to believe that the cpu has died. However, I have already replaced it with a new one and still am getting the same code with no boot up. I have tried the power reset by holding the power button for one minute and still nothing. The fans are functional as well. My question is, what would the next step be for this laptop repair and will it be worth it on a 2 year old machine? Thanks in advance.

A:Compaq Presario CQ56-219WM No Boot

Unless you can find something not connected back correctly (few will repair a laptop's hardware due to fragility) then I'd RMA the CPU to try another one. If the LED blinking code is consistent they should take it as proof it is not working and replace it.

Most new hardware has a year's tech support so you might even get them to help you go over it in advance of an RMA, which is the best way to set one up anyway.

Last night, I came home from work and picked up my laptop and set it up to download Sun Solaris 10 so I could burn it on a DVD at work today. This morning, when I woke up, I found my computer was off. I was surprised, but I just figured it was hibernating (I reinstall XP/Linux/Unix on my laptop all the time, and never know the settings). Anyways... I got to work and tried to boot it up. It makes noise when I hit the power button (fan or fans) but NOTHING HAPPENS. So far I've tried
Booting without the hard drive
Booting without the memory in slot 1 (under the keyboard)
Booting without the memory in slot 2 (accessible from the bottom of the laptop)
Booting with no memory at all
Booting with a VGA monitor attached
Booting from battery only (no AC)
Booting from AC only (no battery)

It should also be noted that the CD-ROM drive has power, will open up when I press the eject button, and I also see hard drive access lights flash a few times at the beginning of the boot process. I haven't been able to closely listen in to see if the hard drive is actually being accessed. The power button and all lights on the computer do not come on. But the fan runs. I'm guessing I have a dead motherboard? I leave this thing on alot, almost 24/7 and I've had it for over 2 years. I was just hoping someone else would have an idea before I throw this thing out the window (obviously I'll salvage the memory, hard drive, cd-rom, maybe even the keyboard and battery (which is alm... My compaq r3000z cto failed to boot this morning. The fans and hard drive spin up. The display only shows random pixels, no bootup text whatsoever. I have removed the hard drive, cdrom, and memory and still nothing. I press f10 to enter the CMOS setup and get no graphics there either. I am afraid it may be the system board. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

A:Compaq presario r3000z cto boot problems

This post belongs in "Mobile Computing" because the Compaq R3000z is a laptop computer...

regardless, it is probably the system board like you say. Heat has probably destroyed the motherboard. You could take it into a repair shop or take it apart yourself and see if you can clean the CPU cooling fan(s) and the cooling fins. It may be just a failed fan or motherboard

Hi folks.

Great forum, full of detailed info so I hope someone can help.

I have a Compaq Presario 5650LA (it's very old) and I am trying to install Western Digital 160 GB Caviar hard drive, model - WD1600AABB. The hard drive can be seen in the bios but no matter what jumper selection I use the machine just posts (You can see the Compaq softpaq bios screen and enter it if desired) then sits with a blinking cursor in the top left of the screen.

I have swapped jumpers, ide cables, tried both channels, disconnected the CD and floppy drive, removed all extraneous cards, swapped the mem modules about, removed and reseated the BIOS battery (it was OK) and updated the BIOS to the latest version but it won't boot. I have also used another (so that's two new drives used) identical drive but it did not help. I have tried seagate, WD, etc: hard drives with no difference and all the drives are fine on another machine.

Here's the crux: When I flashed the BIOS it would not boot from it's own floppy drive, so I swapped it out but had the same problem. But, when I tried an external USB drive it booted OK and I was able to flash the BIOS. So I have a machine that will not boot from floppy or HD but will boot from CD, Hirem's boot CD, etc. Even when I tried a HD on the CD ide channel I got nothing.

If you boot with an XP cd it will find the drive and begin to install until the first reboot when the HD fails to boot again. The hard drive can also be found and t... Read more

I have a Compaq Presario R4000 notebook computer. I have had it for about two years and so far have not had any problems with it. Last night I was using Adobe Encore when the program froze, I shut off my computer manually (by holding down the power button) and whenever I try to turn it on now I am unable to.

I am greeted with the error message "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this."

I am given the options of starting in Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, or Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent setting that worked).

None of these options yield any success, so I turned to the Operations Recovery disc.

When I attempt to run the Microsoft Windows XP Recover Console it does not seem to work, and I am greeted by a black screen with "Microsoft Windows XP Recover Console. The Recovery COnsole Provides system repair and recover functionality. Type EXIT to quit the Recovery Console and restart the computer." There is a line with the prompt "C:\>", when I type "exit", it quits the console and I return to the blue screen, typing exit seems to be my only option at this screen as nothing else happens.

If I take the route through which I would reinstall Windows XP, it tells me that I have a partition (Partition1) with 95700 MB free (roughly the size of my harddrive). However, to go this route... Read more

Hi,

I recently was given a Compaq Presario M2000. It's runs windows xp home edition and has a 80GB HDD. I was told it had some problems but didn't know what until I tried to boot it up. I get 2 error messages.

One is PXE-E61 Media Test Failure, Check Cable

Two is PXE-M0F Exiting PXE-ROM
Here's what I've done so far. I have detached the battery then pushed the power button for 30 to 60 seconds. I accessed where the RAM is and pulled each one out and resetted them. I also accessed the HDD, pulled it out and then put it back in making sure it is setted correctly too.

After doing all this I put the battery back in, attached the power cord and started the laptop up. She booted up and I was able to access the windows start up screen until I got to where I had to enter a password. At this time I chose to wipe the hard drive clean. Something happened when I tried to do this because I was getting random numbers and symbols scrolling down the screen really fast. Then all of a sudden it stopped and I had a black screen. I rebooted and received those 2 errors I listed above.

Can someone please help me. I'm at a loss right now

A:Compaq Presario M2000 boot up errors

My guess would be a bad or failing hard drive. If the system is trying to do a PXE boot, the hard drive is not found or not bootable. Download the bootable diagnostic disc from whoever makes the drive and do a full scan and see if errors are returned.

Hi,

Whenever I boot up my Presario it does things in this order:

Starts making the fan noise

Displays the red Compaq logo

The Compaq logo gets weirdly distorted

It reboots and does it all over again!
I can't get into the BIOS or any other preferences, and I can't get to the Control Panel either. When I try to put in a recovery cd, it spits it back out and goes nuts again. Sometimes, if I leave it alone for a while (about 45 minutes- 3 hours) it lasts longer when booting and can actually get to Windows XP. Then, after about 10 minutes it reboots and goes nuts all over again. Here are my system specs:

AMD Athlon XP Processor 2000+ operating at 1.67GHz
2x 60GB Ultra DMA Hard Drive
256MB DDR SDRAM Memory
Integrated ProSavageDDR KM266 graphics with 32MB shared video memory

I know that the CMOS battery, the RAM stick, and the hard drive are OK.

What is going on with my Presario???

A:Compaq Presario 6320US Boot Problems

Well even with a dead battery and without a hard drive installed you should be able to POST and go into the BIOS. How do you know that the RAM is good though?

Sounds like it could be an overheating problem. The computer detects a high temperature and shuts down to prevent damage. In a perfect world it should shut off and stay off, but I've seen computers do an endless on/off cycle. In fact, I had a Dell that would endlessly go on and off until I yanked the power plug. You said if you leave the computer off for 1-3 hours then it'll stay on for longer. Well, the longer it's off the cooler it'll get which means the longer it can stay on before overheating.

Have you opened the case and looked inside yet? If it's dusty inside, the first thing you'd wanna do is dust it out good. Make sure all the heatsinks, fans, power supply, and all case air vents are completely clear of dust. The second thing I would check is the CPU heatsink. I'm pretty sure that CPU's heatsink has a metal retaining clip that latches onto (usually) a plastic bracket. The plastic bracket could have snapped, which would mean the heatsink isn't properly mounted anymore. That would cause the CPU to heat up to dangerous levels, which would cause the computer to shut down.

Those are the first two things I would look for and try to rule out. After that, it could be a dying power supply. Or the thermal grease could have dried out, which would mean you'd have to re... Read more

Compaq presario with Vista. Trying to do a clean install of windows 7 on comapq presario f500. Problem is the machine will only boot from hard drive. Cd drive works fine just can't boot from it.
Windows 7 install disk won't boot. Windows xp install cd won't boot. In bios setup I've move the dvd/cdrom drive to top of boot list still no luck. So I got tricky booted from vista and starting windows 7 install cd from windows explorer. Install hung part way through and I had to turn off the computer. No I can't boot vista and have an incomplete install of windows 7 which won't boot. Not even safe mode. When you boot hit Esc the boot menus only shows notebook hard drive as an option.

I've also tried unpluging the battery to clear out cmos no help.

Help I've trying to upgrade for a relative. Now the machine is uselss.

A:Compaq presario can only boot from hard disk

Download and write the latest Win7 official installer for your licensed version to flash stick from Steps 1 and 2 here which will also show you how to get a perfect install.

If you have files to rescue from Vista you can Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console.

Otherwise boot the flash stick, choose Custom install, delete all partitions and create new partition(s) as desired, format and install.

Ok, first of all i would like to say hello to all members of TSGF!!

Ok, to start, the system that im having problems with is a Compaq Presario V5000 (whichis stated in the title). I have done all that I can possibly do to help this thing. I have followed other solutions and im still having the same problem. Here is a list of what I have done:

Reseated the Ram
Reseated the processor
Replaced the CMOS battery
Bought new RAM and used all possible combinations in both RAM modules
Removed HDD
Replaced HDD
Formated HDD
Bought new battery and AC Adapter
Reapplied thermal paste to processor

I have done all of the above and the problem still continues to happen. What it does is, I will start the laptop. All the lights will come on, But nothing appears on the screen for about 15 minutes. When the COMPAQ logo finally appears, I go to setup. This is where I will start having problems. I cant really do to much of anything here. The laptop will freeze with a whole bunch of artifacts all over the screen. There is nothing wrong with the HDD, RAM, CPU, LCD, or DVD drive. I dont think its the motherboard. Sometimes it will boot my XP cd and it will begin the installation, then freeze . I really dont know what to do anymore. Please help me, any attempts will be greatly appreciated.

A:Compaq Presario V5000 Boot problems

I have worked on many V5000s. Good solid machines. Try this:

1. Unplug. Remove the main battery and CMOS battery. Wait 15 minutes. Reinstall the CMOS battery.

2. Remove HDD, DVD, one memory module. Unplug the touch pad (small ribbon conn under KB). Connect AC adapter. Boot to DOS with an external USB floppy. Twist the case gently. Press on the MB. Does the machine work normally? Keep it on for 30 minutes.

If YES, add back the touch pad, memory, DVD and HDD one at a time. Repeat the tests. If the machine dies, yiu have probably found the bad module.

If NO, you most likely have a bad MB. It is much cheaper to replace the MB with a good used one from Ebay than mess with the bad MB. There are several part numbers that will work. Just match your model category -Intel FF or DF and AMD FF or DF. ( FF = Full Featured and DF = Defeatured.)

Good luck.

COMPUTER: Compaq Presario 2100 Laptop running Win XP, Svc Pack 2.

For no apparent reason, the computer malfunctioned, and when booting, goes through the following sequence:

1. The COMPAQ screen?blank screen with COMPAQ in middle.

2. Error Msg: We are sorry for the inconvenience, but Windows didn?t start successfully. A recent Hardware or software change might have caused this?and goes on to advise that if I don?t know what might have caused it, to choose to boot normally. Or I could arrow up to select to boot in Safe Mode, or Safe Mode with Command Line. No matter which one I choose, the following occurs:

3. I get the Win opening screen

4. A couple of clicks in the computer and it shuts down. As it shuts down, a blue screen with some message flashed monentarily, but I can?t catch what it says.

I tried to boot in Safe mode manually (f8) boot no matter which of the options I choose after the Safe screen choices come up, the above sequence takes place.

I hit ESC during boot (or was it f2?), anyway, I got to Setup screen and performed the Drive Test, and got a ?Fail 1 ? 7? message.

So I changed the boot sequence to the CD, hoping I could boot from the repair disk, but the above sequence again took place.

Is there anything else I should do or check before changing the hard drive? Can a repair shop re-write the boot area? And BTW, if I swap the hard drive, do all drives come with standard boot sequences? I mean, if I boot from the CD containing the replac... Read more

Hi,

One of my Compaq Presarios is doing strange things. When I plug it in, it automatically turns on. When it reaches the Compaq logo, it just stays there and nothing happens. One thing I notice is that the CPU light doesn't blink at all.

Does anybody have an idea of what is going on?

EDIT: The most recent time I plugged it in the fan started making this horrible noise (sort of like a high-pitched motor running at top speed combined with screaming).

Hello,
I have a Compaq Presario Computer with windows XP on it. recently i started getting an error message which says lsass.exe and the computer doesnt go any further after I click on ok which is the only option there. It just goes to a blank black screen. someone mentioned to me that i should try to do a system restore on it through the safe mode, but that doesnt work either becasue same error comes even in safe mode. i have tons of data on this computer and i cannot afford to lose it. i need a way to recover my data. it seems to me that the only option i may have is ot do a system recovery through the cds that i got when i purchased the computer, is that true? someone also mentioned to me that if i have the Operating System CD then i might not have to do anything but just repair. How does this work? I cannot seem to find the O.S cd, where can i get it from? Is it the same as the Windows XP cd? also, this problem has been occuring since a few days now and of course i havent been turning on the computer since there isnt much i can do, so by this problem just being there is it making it worse or not? i just dont have the time right now but does that mean that the problem just sitting there is harming it further? Some people have also told me of how to recover data using Ubuntu or something, how good is that? please help me in this asap. thank you so much

A:Compaq Presario wont boot up even in safe mode

You can use a number of Linux distros to tunnel through the back door of a Windows system for the purpose of rescuing your files but if you have to burn a CD, it may as well be Hirens BootCD which includes MiniXP and once in there, you'll be in familiar territory to find and copy out your data on to memory sticks or an external hard drive.

When you've got it all, then go for the computer manufacturer's recovery disk and it won't matter too mucj if it restores the machine to the day it left the factory. You'll lose any programmes you've installed since then but hopefully, you'll still have the installation disks for those.

Well, my problem is a strange but persistent one. It appears my PC WILL boot and start but right after the microsoft loading bar, the monitor goes pitch black and stays off and I'm not sure if the PC is on but it lights up as if it were but won't do a thing.

Now, I've tried everything Vista has to cure this (Startup Repair could not diagnose ANY problems). What is the deal here?

Any help, especially quick and urgent would be appreciated as I NEED this laptop for work,

A:Compaq Presario F700 w/ Vista boot errors?

Hi

your monitor isnt supporting the refresh rate or screen size selected, you will need to start in safe mode and set it to 640X480 and then reboot back into normal mode.

If this doesnt cure it start it safe mode and use device manager to remove the video card, reboot and let Vista refind it, you may need to update the driver.

Ok. Trying to fix a friend's computer, and seem to have run into a rather strange snag.  Problem:  The computer will not boot past the bios screen. Details:  When you power on the computer, the compaq logo with intel inside shows up and has the <F1 Setup> and <F10 System Recovery> options listed as well.  And this is about as far as the computer gets.  After this the whole computer is just locked up, no buttons work on the keyboard no lights come on the keyboard ect ect.  I've tried mashing on the F1 key as soon as I power on the computer and I can manage to get it to say *entering setup* but it still freezes after this point.  I've already tried eliminating possible sources of problem, all expansion cards removed, HDD and Dvd Rom disconnected, single memory module (256mb ddr 2700), only power, vga, and keyboard connected.  Ive also used the jumper on the motherboard to clear the cmos hoping that would solve the problem, to no avail.  I've tried using a different stick of memory and different memory slot as well...  Tried using both a ps2 and a usb keyboard... Ive even tried pulling out the jumper for the bios password protection (even though it didn't have a password on it, just trying anything I can think of).  The installed bios version is 3.1, and that is about all I know about the computer at this point, other than what the website tells me of it.   http://h10025.www1.hp.com/... I was working on a customer's laptop, a Compaq CQ60, that refused to boot into windows and System Recovery disabled all recovery options except for Command Prompt.

On a hunch, after pressing Escape during BIOS boot, I selected HDD Test. The test ran and failed with "Replace Hard Drive." OK.. the laptop sat there for a few minutes and never did anything else, so I tried to get out of that screen. Nothing responded, so I just held the Power button to turn the computer off.

When I pressed Power again to turn the computer back on, the Power and Wireless LEDs comes on, the CD drive is accessed and then the HDD LED lights up for a second and goes out. The screen never comes up nor do the backlights.

I have tried hooking up an external monitor, but that never shows anything either.

I have tried taking the memory out, cleaning the contacts, putting them back in, swapping the modules around, booting with one or the other.... No effect.

I pulled the battery and the CMOS battery, unplugged AC and let it sit for a good half hour. I held the Power button for thirty seconds. Plugged the CMOS battery back in then the AC. Turned it on and still no go.

I cannot figure out WHAT could have happened!? Any other ideas? Thanks...

Got the infamous "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" on my mom's compaq presario desktop sr1900nx. It appears on a black screen after the red/white compaq screen. It takes about 30 seconds for the error to appear. There is a blinking underscore the line below it. I have done several hours of searching and have tried several things to get to at least to the system recovery area, but I can not even do that. When I cut power to it and try at least starting the boot process, I do get the COMPAQ red/white screen with 3 options on it. ESC to enter boot menu, F1 for setup, F10 for system recovery. The ESC & F1 work, but that's about it. I can not access the system recovery. It does NOT have a floppy drive, nor did the PC come with any recovery disks and of course I do not have any. I am just looking at this point to recover some pictures/documents from it...then as far as I am concerned it is trash. It was running windows XP. Is this even possible without spending a ton of cash on recovery cd's or for file recovery? I have also tried F8, Pause/Break and have hunted the setup/boot menu for anything that could help - and found nothing.

Thank you.

A:Compaq Presario Disk Boot Failure F10 system recovery not working

Hi Luchipboo, and welcome to BleepingComputer.

That Compaq has a recovery partition, this is why it didn't come with the discs. If you have the user's manual it should explain how to use it.

If you wish to backup the files that are on there first, you can alway install that hdd in another desktop as a slave drive. This will required setting the jumper on the rear of the drive in the slave position, and connect to the IDE data connector in the middle location. You should be able to access your files from there.

Then screen comes up telling me to install free software and a link to windows media player 10. I do this, it loads as it should, and I try to install as normal. At end of installation, it gives me error message from Windows Media Technologies. It says"this version of WMT is incompatible with this version of windows. For more info view the info at the Microsoft website". Have tried this several times. Have gone thru several scenarios with compaq and tried many different remedies. Have tried to uninstall all WMP entirely and reinstall. Many restarts. Disc popup blocker, antivirus, firwall, defrag, run programs that compaq had me try. Same prob now. Have the 8 system recovery disc's from compaq if all else fails but don't want to do that if it can be corrected any other way.

NOTE: THIS IS A COPY OF MY POST ON THE COMPAQ FORUM...getting desperate.

Hi, i bought a 6150b from a company auction. Everything worked perfect for the longest time. Then last week i went to go turn it on, and all it does is run the CPU fan for a couple seconds, flash the AC LED about 7 - 8 times, and while thats flashing the power and hard drive LED’s stay solidly lit. Then it completely turns off. This all lasts about 3 seconds at the most. That’s what happens when on battery power.

When on AC power, the same thing happens, except it continues doing the cycle over and over again until I unplug it.

I think it might have something to do with the LCD monitor, since it does not even show a slight flicker at all. No color change like it would from when turned off to a black back lit screen when turning on….simply nothing.

I opened her up (no warranty anyways) and checked all the connections for the keyboard, monitor, DVD drive etc....also reseated them as well, with no luck.

Pulled the both RAM modules and reseated them as well, nothing.

Pulled the battery as well, no change. Still cycles the same over and over again while on AC

There are no audible errors codes (real nice HP...), and im lost at this point.

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

A:Compaq Presario 6150b wont boot - no BIOS screen - powers on and off repeatedly

I think instead of just pulling and replacing the CMOS battery you might purchase a new one and install it. Proceed from there. If you get a screen and it's still has a problem try a new PSU. Jazz

Hi:

Here's the problem:

Someone asked me to see if I could upgrade an early (old) Compaq Presario 5WV254 computer. The first thing I did was max out the RAM (768MB) using Crucial's 'certified' Compaq modules.

This dinosaur has a 40GB hard drive and an nVidia 8MB graphics card. I placed Windows XP Pro into the drive and proceeded to format the drive with NTFS. Everything went smoothly, and the machine rebooted after installing the drivers, etc.

Unfortunately, instead of continuing to proceed with the usual installation process, it starts the initial setup process over and over (I let this happen about 7 times) and will not complete the installation.

I've performed upgrades on lots of these older Compaq Presarios, but have never encountered this before.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how this issue can resolved?

Thanks in advance.

Griff

Hello all...
I recently wanted to install a program which told me i halfway through the installer that i had to have SP3 to run it.
So i googled sp3, went to the microsoft website and downloaded it.
My pc started to do the loop reboot thing thats assicoiated with amd processors..of course i didnt read up on this before i installed it.
So i researched how to fix this problem and came up with alot of different solutions.
I went to go get the xp disk. Inserted it in the drive and pressed F10 upon startup which launched the system recovery thing for compaq. I clicked recover or whatever and it started to do its thing, next thing i know its reinstalled xp...
So im thinking its wiped everything and installed a fresh version of XP which is not the case.
It still shows the programs in the program list but i cant use them and when i look at the C: drive capacity, there is still the same amount taken up and a little bit more, as i had previously before the crash.
Ive kinda worked out that its installed itself over the top of my older xp? but i dont know how to get this back
Please help!

My Compaq Presario X1000 has a problem that i find impossible to fix. What happens is that when I turn on the pc, it doesnt respond and just stays blank even though all the lights are on. When i learnt about the pressing the top of the f6 button while turning it on, it works. But during using the pc, it would somehow flicker and turn black again. Is there any way to permanently solve this problem?

A:Compaq Presario X1000 problem.

It sounds like you have a hardware problem. Maybe a power short. Maybe a bad power cable or connector. Maybe a bad motherboard. The possiblities are nearly endless.

If you feel that you are not skilled enough with notebook hardware, consider taking it to professional. Often they will diagnose for free or little money.

I just got a used Compaq Presario V2000 laptop. It was working fine but it was running slow and there were some other problems so I formatted the drive and installed windows xp. Now, all of the hardware is unrecognized. The speakers arent found, the video card isnt found, the monitor, wifi internet, etc. Everything either isnt found or its generic so under monitor it just says "Video Monitor". Can anyone help me with this? I got it used so I dont have a recovery disk or anything. Here are the specs:

1.7 or so Ghz Amd Sempron 3100+
around 896mb of ram
128mb ATI RADEON video card (forget which one)
Altec Lansing speakers

Thats all I know from the top of my head. It would be greatly appreciated if someone could help me.

When starting this pc it will load the BIOS but is then unable to load the Win XP software. It gives a message stating that it is unable to find the system software telling me to initiate the repair process.

By pressing the 'r' key a restart of the pc is initiated causing the pc to reboot. Sometimes the boot process will find the systems software and other time I will need to press either the F1 key to go into the BIOS setup and the exit or press the F8 key to go into safe mode startup to cause the pc to find the system software and thus start up.

This pc has all of the latest updates from Microsoft loaded onto it. The XP version is 2002 and with service pack 2 installed.

I have run the PC-Doctor software installed on the pc which tells me that there are no problems with the hard disk. That being case, is the problem with the operating system? If so how might I obtain the repair disk the BIOS is asking for?

Any help would be appreciated!

Your pc should have came with a XP Installation Disk. All you do is insert the CD in the CD Tray and reboot. When it ask to press any button to boot from CD, press any button and the CD will start to load files. Once that is complete (usually 2-5 minutes) press ENTER the press R to repair Operating System

I bumped my laptop this morning on the mouse pad (the thing you run your finger on to move the mouse curser) pretty hard and my laptop shutdown, as I went to power it back on it wouldn't turn on. I can click the power button all I like nothing will start up. I took off the caseing above the RAM and hard-drive and made sure they didn't shimmy loose, after I made sure neither was loose I put the covers back on and I'm still having the same problem.
I have been having hard-drive problems latley and have to replace the hard-drive but thats beside the point.(Laptop only works in safe mode with networking). I have someone who wants to buy it with the current hard-drive problem due to the great price I offered. But I am ensured that theire not going to buy it if the damn thing wont power on.
The power cord and battery work just fine. (Was working good last night) Could somthing be loose? I have read tons of articles on this matter and nothing I saw applies to me. Would this have somthing to do with the CPU and Motherboard parts getting loose enough so it cannot recive power? Or is this one of them problems when I have to either take the whole damn thing apart and sauder stuff or what? Any imput will be greatly apreciated.

You need to disassemble the case to get to the MousePad unit... remove, adjust, and replace it, then remove or disable the current touchpad drivers, and reinstall them from a Presariou download...
It there is any permanent damage, you will see it, but usually it is an adjustment of components.

Hi there!,

I have a Compaq Presario 1400 notebook model 14XL355 (celeron 667). It came with 64 MB of RAM (integrated). I have just bought an additional 128 MB of RAM (branch infineon, model hys64v16220gdl-7.5-c2), but when I connected it, my laptop did recognize only 64MB. That is, now my laptop says I have 128 MB when I am supposed to have 192MB.

Any idea about what's happening?

Hi All

I own a Compaq Presario F551AU laptop. It has been playing up so I used the HP system restore feature to restore it to factory settings. This meant that all data would be destroyed as the disk would be formatted as part of the process. Part of the process was to back up all other data which I did to a USB disk and it worked perfectly. The computer was then formatted and restored to factory and all works fine.

Now comes the problem.

When I use this to restore the back from the HP resotre utility is does not find the disk drive with the back up on it. Yet I can access the drive and find the back up files manually. Part of the back up file is an application which also sets the process as well. This also does not find the necessary files.HP say sorry no idea and of course windows back up does not recognise it.

Lots of important data on this. If anyone can help I would appreciate it very much.

Thanks

Hi,

I would suggest you to run Windows Audio Playback Diagnose and Repair from the below MS FIX-IT: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/AudioPlayback/

If the issue still persists, then go to control panel/sound/speakers/properties/advanced/restore defaults.

If nothing works, I suggest that you uninstall and reinstall the drivers for your Audio device. This will reset all Audio Components.

Kindly revert and let us know if that fixes your issue.

This is accessed by tapping the F8 key during startup (you'll probably need to do this about once every two-to-three seconds from the time you turn the machine on - shouldn't take more than 20-30 seconds to reach the menu), and selecting Safe Mode from the menu that appears.

Well, Last night, my laptop totally froze. No mouse movement. Screen froze. Everything. The only way to get round this was to disconnect any power to the laptop and remove the battery. That solved my 1st Problem. However, once i tried to reboot the system, All i got was a black screen with flashing Caps lock light OR in some cases it begins to start up however, at the ''Starting Windows screen'' It goes black and stays black.

Erm, i really love my laptop so if anyone has any suggestions to fix this.. or if i've posted it in the wrong section i apologize i just need a fix :(

I have a Compaq Presario V2000 laptop, about 4 years old, and it fails to start up 100% of the time. Successful start ups happen now around 40% of the time. Typically it starts up with the Compaq logo at the beginning and either stops there or goes blank to the cursor at the top left corner. I've tried to open it on safe mode when it doesn't start up properly, but to no avail or I forcefully shut down the computer until it starts up. Is there a way to ensure that it does start up, because I have gone through dry spells for weeks before I have a successful start up?

I have the following problem with my XP Home SP2 Compaq F762AU laptop.

Sometimes after shutting down the laptop refuses to turn on when I hit the power key. Dead. It's only when I hit the power key together with the Fn key it would power up. This is a combo I accidentally found while grappling to turn it on yesterday, and it happened again just minutes ago. Sure enough hitting the Fn and power keys together at the same time turns it on. Like I said this doesn't happen all the time when I shut down and turn it back on, only sometimes, but it's bugging me.

I realise it may not be too big an issue but it bothers me nonetheless - who knows it could get worse (say, refusing to turn on at all).

Anybody ever experienced this?

Thanks!

After a search here, (what I should have done before buying) I checked the following sites that were recomended by the TG members:

Hello,

The sound on my 3-month old Compaq Presario SR5510F is not functioning at all. I cannot hear the sound on webcasts. There is no sound on clips on the internet, including videos. I cannot hear any music playback ;and now, I cannot hear persons that I chat with on the Skype, though they hear me when I speak.

I took the computer to the Geek Squad today at BEST BUY. They tested it with their accessories and told me all was fine. I bought a new headset and external speakers. When I returned home and connected these, together with my DELL monitor, to the computer, there again was no sound.

It is very frustrating not having the sound as I do conferencing on Skype and Go To Meeting quite frequently. I have one on Monday morning. I need and will appreciate your help for solution.

Thanks.

A:Sound problem with Compaq Presario SR5510F

Hi there

Have you tried reinstalling the drivers for your soundcard?

To do so you must first uninstall the current drivers by starting a run dialog (Either Start > Run or by holding down the windows key and pressing "R") and typing in:

devmgmt.msc

You find your sound card/audio device, right click, go to properties, and under the driver tab select "uninstall."

Then download and install the correct driver:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=2093&product=3740354

if that doesn't work, try this one:

ftp://152.104.238.19/pc/audio/WDM_R198.exe
To find other drivers for your system and more support go to:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=3740354&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us

I have winME installed on Compaq Presario 5000 with 700mhz celeron 64mb ram 15 gig drive with a DVD and CDRW.

The computer recognizes the DVD which works great but the CDRW is not recognized at all in control panel. The light on the CDRW blinks once on boot up. I took cover off and reseated all connections which are tight.

If I run compaq diagnostics, the computer locks up. If I add new hardware it never finds the CDRW drive.

I went to compaq help site online and ran a diagnostic there which worked without locking up. However the CDRW is not found on list of hardware.

I cannot figure out how to check bios to see if it is configured wrong.. BTW, I have an extra Creative Blaster CDRW(new) that could be installed, but since this compaq is new I hate to replace something in it without making sure it is broken. Also, I dont want to send my new computer off to a service center if I can fix it.

Any ideas on what I can do?

Customer's Presario was attempting to load into XP home and stopped at screen with mouse pointer that didn't move when mouse was moved. Booted into safe mode. Same thing. Booted to recovery partition. More or less same thing. Finally convinced Compaq tech support to send the recovery cds. It recreated the restore partition and then, IIRC, stalled at the same place when it tried to restore the Windows partition. Finally, I tried to install windows 98, and it stalled out during registry creation.

Somewhere along the line, I started to suspect a hardware issue. :-/

I've checked both the RAM and hard drive and they're clean. A friend has suggested that it might be the mouse's PS2 port and to try turning it off in BIOS and use an USB mouse. I haven't tried that yet - I'm working on another computer.

Does anybody have any other suggestions, or should I start shopping around for a new mobo if that doesn't work?

Greetings

I have a Compaq Presario 1685 notebook, and its TFT display has clouded up on me till its all white and nothing is visible on the desktop.

An external monitor works fine on the system (which kinda eliminates the video card) but I beleive something might be up with the screen itself.

The problem occurred previously, and I solved it when I noticed that applying delicate pressur to certain spots behind the screen, cause the display to return as normal..

This doesn't work anymore though.

Another thing is.. when the computer is off for a long time (about a day) it takes longer for the screen to get cloudy white. For example.. the system would boot normally, the red COMPAQ logo would appear, followed by the initialization screens, and the Windows 98 startup screen.. then the desktop would appear.. and a couple minutes after, it would turn white.. boom..

If anyone has any ideas on this.. I"d love to hear 'em... THANX!

A:Compaq Presario v6000 major problem

1st thing I would try is to re-seat the RAM, pull it out blow it off and put it back in...(make sure there all the way in)
if you get in windows, go to C:/windows/minidumps, copy them here, maybe someone with more experience can look at them for you...

good luck!

Hi,

I recently turned on my laptop and the screen was black. After a while when it booted up, the screen came on as normal and then flashed out about 10 seconds later. I can shine a torch on to the screen when it boots up and see windows and everything but it's obviously too dark to use. I replaced inverter and lcd panel but the problem remains...

How should I go about fixing this?
