What is the average life-expectancy of a Dell Dimension 1100 desktop computer

Q: What is the average life-expectancy of a Dell Dimension 1100 desktop computer

I have Dell Dimension 1100 desktop computer that is seven years old.

The computer is turned on 12 hours per day and is used on average three hours per day, mainly to send / receive emails, surf the web, use Word Office software and stream movies.

Last year it went very slow, but after a service and the insertion of an additional 1GB of RAM, it regained a reasonable level of performance. It now has I.25 GB of RAM.

My question is this. What is the average life-expectancy of this type of computer.

Sometimes Dell offers a trade-in deal in respect of old computers (provided that they are functional).

If I could estimate when my present computer was almost at the end of its life, I might be able to take advantage of such a deal.

A: What is the average life-expectancy of a Dell Dimension 1100 desktop computer

I'm sure Dell have some life expectancy figures, but not likely in the public domain , even with an average time you need to know the distribution of those figures

so 10 years - you could have 50 untits fail at 5 years and 50 units fail at 10 years , would give a number of 7.5yrs - which would not help you really

i would say seven years old is a quite old for a PC these days , the mechanical parts , harddrive may likely to failure

I assume you have all the data backed up anyway

Not sure you would get much of a deal from Dell - but with the deals available this may not actually save you anything

Staples often have great deals - also Curry/PCworld are doing deals over Easter

Not really an answer to your question though

Hello,

Anyone have a general sense of life expectancy for Dell Latitude E6520? I use the laptop for business - I do not travel often so the laptop is usually docked. I purchased the laptop in December 2011 - it is now 4 years and 3 months old.

Thanks in advance for your help!

A:Life Expectancy Dell Latitude E6520

Are you on it daily? Do you use it constantly? I don't think there's an exact rule of thumb, but I don't keep computers for more than 4 years. I always replace them after 4 years. But that's just me, I know some people keep them 6 or 7 years with no issues. I just like new tech. If it works for what you do, then keep it. If it no longer does what you need, or if it's slowed down a bit, maybe time to upgrade it(add and SSD and possibly memory if you can), or get rid of it.

I'm guessing you have a Dell Dimension 1100/B110 desktop.

What's the 7-character "service tag" number on it?

This should be the audio driver for it.

---------------------------------------------------------

If you did a reinstall of Windows XP, you need to install the SP3 upgrade and then the 100+ post-SP3 high priority updates.

Your goal is to get Windows XP up-to-date and all devices working before you install a bunch of programs and extras in that computer.

He installed a new copy of XP and wiping everything he had but has lost a lot of the drivers and cannot get online or the display sorted.

I have listed the controllers required below. I went onto Dell website however the drivers page has 'page error' on every driver I try. Any help would be much appreciated.

I was just on the Dell website configuring systems for cost comparisons. I started with an E521 then tried a Dimension 1100, which was listed with a base price $100 less than the E521.

After I ran the configurations and added the features I wanted they came out to exactly the same price!

Considering they are the same price, which is a better system?

Hi again.
I have a problem with my Dell Dimension 1100 desktop PC: when I run a graphics- and sound -intensive programme (by my standards anyway), the system restarts spontaneously quite regularly . It reboots with one of several messages that tell me to contact Dell and report the failure to reboot at the checkpoint named. The checkpoints are usually Imsi, Poke, PnP4 or (once only) Time. These mean nothing to me, and all attempts to advise Dell have failed. Maybe someone here can help.

Here are some details about my system:
(I'm a novice at this, so much of this info may be irrelevant).
I have a Dell "Dimension 1100" Pentium desktop pc running under MS XP-SP3.
The total Physical Memory is 1G, total Virtual Memory is 2G, and the Page File size is 2.41G (whatever all that means).
It uses a Soundmax Integrated digital sound system from Analog Devices. The graphics controller is Intel, with Radeon 9200 and Radeon 9200LE (Primary and Secondary) adapters. Drivers are ATI2dvag.dll (6.14.10.4299)
Can anyone help with this very frustrating problem please?

Hi
I have a Dell Dimension 1100 that I would like to upgrade, if possible.. I need some advice on what exactly can be upgraded.

So far I have ordered (but not yet received) an extra 2GB RAM (1GB x 2)
Apparently that's all it can handle. So I assume if I wanted more RAM I'd need a new motherboard? And if I get a new motherboard what else will I have to upgrade?

I'd also like a bigger hard drive...but would that mean I'd need to replace the one it's already got? and put everything on the new hard drive?
At the moment it has 80 GB partitioned in 3, so the main part with all the programs on it is 20 GB and it has 1GB free.

As for price range, obviously the cheaper the better.

I have very limited knowledge of computers so I'd appreciate your patience with me.
Thanks in advance,
Mariana.

A:Advice on Dell Dimension 1100 upgrade

2GB is the max for that system. Installing a new motherboard can be a mixed bag with some dells. Sometimes they use proprietary connectors or parts that make replacing the motherboard difficult or impossible.

There appears to be only one drive bay for a hard drive although you could always put one where the floppy drive goes or into a free 5 1/4 slot with the appropriate spacers and cable if needed.

If you were going to replace the drive, you could use something like Acronis True Image to Copy the 3 partitions to the new drive and leave the remaining space blank or you could do something like clone the boot partition to a large partition and manually copy the data from the other 2 partitions to the remaining free space.

a dell dimension 1100 shuts down after about 10-20 seconds and wont turn on again until after 5 minutes or so.. i have added thermal paste to the cpu and replaced the memory...any other suggestions as to what i should do ??

thanks in advance

A:Dell Dimension 1100 shuts down after 20 seconds

Sounds like a heat issue, or a cpu that does not have adequate thermal paste between heat sink and cpu fan.
It is old enough to require a replacement hard drive... Good to test with another hard drive.
Is the screen any different when booted to SAFE MODE?
Do you have a separate video graphics card, or is it connected to onboard graphics?
Power supply could be failing. A power supply tester costs $10 to $15 on up to $15, but just exchanging with another power supply would satisfy that inquiry.
Other items to consider on that model: CMOS battery might be failing.
One simply test is to remove and reseat all cables. Consider replacing the EIDE 80 Connector 40 conductor cable from board to hard drive.
Clean all dust, dirt, fiber and hair out of the heat sink, if not already done.

I am trying to boot from the floppy drive in a dell dimension 1100 running xp pro but the bios says:
"floppy drive (not installed)"  Not sure what to do.

Another option would be to boot from the optical drive, but the computer will not boot from a new cd (which works on other computers)  that has Ubuntu on it.  It will boot from the windows xp os cd though.  Is it possible to get older cd's so the computer will boot from them. If so, how do you find these older cd's.

Thank-you

A:"floppy drive not installed" in bios in dell dimension 1100

If the computer is an old one then it's possible it is non-PAE. Later versions of Ubuntu do not support a non-PAE CPU.

http://www.technize.net/how-to-check-if-your-processor-supports-pae-nx-and-sse2-for-windows-8-installation/

For the floppy problem open the computer and see if the connections are secure, both the data and power cables. Unplug the power cord. Hold the power button down for 30 seconds. Open the case and touch some bare metal first.

Are you trying to install Ubuntu on the computer? If the CPU does support PAE it is possible to boot Ubuntu from a USB flash drive using Rufus and the Ubuntu iso if the computer supports it. Attach the USB flash drive with Ubuntu and tap F12 at boot to select your boot device or make sure USB boot has top priority in BIOS.

May seem like a dumb question but I've never had a dell before and this one is getting on my nerves. Ok short story is I inherited this PC from my late mother in law. She had only 256 ram so I bought 1GB and installed it and it still ran slow. Now my 7 year old downloaded a trojan virus which made the PC run even slower. I got rid of the trojan and it still runs slow. I figured I'd be better off just reinstalling windows but everyone wants atleast $80 to $100 to do it, I'd figured I could do it myself but have no idea how to with a Dell. It's an Dimension 1100 Series, has Intel Celeron CPU 2.53 Ghz, DVD/Cd-Rw, that's about it. I've download the drivers and backed up important files just need alittle more info to get going. I keep several thousand archive files of music. I no longer keep CD media, so I make FLAC files and then sell the CD's. I know its risky, but I try to take all precautions.

I installed a Vantec removable drive system (with switchable power and fan) to house my archive files. So far, I have filled 2 300GB drives and am working on a 3rd. The drives are never used to play music (I also keep a dedicated MP3 drive) and the drives are always turned off, when not in use. The extra drives are kept in a file cabinet.

Since these are my primary back-ups to my library, I'm curious to know of the life expectancy of a HD, under these conditions. I know its subjective, but should I take any other precautions to ensure data integrity.

Thanks

Hello everyone! I've recently bought a refurbished Lenovo W520, with a brand new SSD and new ram as well. The model dates back to 2011, and actually looks rather new in it's overall appearance. These are bought from firms whose users, I assume, have probably used them less intensely and probably with greater care than the average user. My question is; How long should I expect this machine to function? It already got what I assume to be around half a decade on its back, and while certain essential parts (SSD and Ram) are brand new, I'm still anxious about the longevity of the rest of it's internal components. Thanks in advance! - Philip

A:Life expectancy of a 'new' refurbished Lenovo W520

I'd only really worry about the cooling issues. This is speaking from still using a well-travelled W520. Depending on how many hours of use the laptop has had and the conditions it was kept in, the thermal paste might need replacing over the GPU/CPU and the fans/vents might need a blow out with compressed air to clear any accumulation. That's about a $6 job to do yourself (materials: thermal paste and compressed air, remove keyboard and keyboard frame, remove heat pipes over GPU/CPU.) I'm assuming you received a new battery (obviously these age and there's no way the original is up to spec anymore) and the LCD screen shows no issues (backlight will dim over time but mine is still going strong with only a little pink cast near the corners -- though to be fair, mine has had a rough life and fallen multiple times on hard surfaces from some great distances.) In the past, on other thinkpads, the only other points of failure have been the bearings going in the cooling fan which requires a replacement of the fan assembly and graphics failures (sometimes from the graphics cable being overworked going through the hinge.) I haven't had either of these problems with the W520 yet. The hinge is better designed than many previous thinkpads and the cooling is less active which will stretch out the life of any fan bearings. This is with the 2000M GPU (the 1000M models may have had other issues because the two had different cooling designs.) Currently I have a Plextor mSATA SSD... Read more

Hi!

I would like to ask how can i preserve my hdds to increase their life expectancy (if this possible...) cause i have tons of gigas of multimedia on them! I know i can also backup them for cds and dvds but there is always a chance of doing this, right?

How many years could they last if they are well preserved????

I have got WDJ, Seagates, Maxtor and Hitachi.

Thanks!

A:Hard drive life expectancy - archiving

You shouldn't rely on any HD life expectancy estimates. If you have sensitive data then you should consider every hard drive as something that will fail tomorrow (and that's exactly how it is - your brand new HD may die tomorrow no matter the "life expectancy"). Make a RAID array out of your disks and backup often. If you have a lot of data then you may consider a tape device for backups - a 200GB tape for some $30 is a lot cheaper and faster than a pile of DVD-R discs.

You could go and look up the MTBF statistics for your specific hard drives (good luck). MTBF is almost never quoted by HD makers for consumer devices for obvious reasons so you should pretend to be a corporate customer

I have a Logitech Cordless Mouse/Keyboard combo. I've had it for a couple of months now, I like it, but it seems that every couple of weeks I start to get constant pop-ups that the batteries for one or the other are at "critical" status. The last time, the mouse pointer suddenly stopped moving altogether until the battery was changed.

What is the average life expectancy for batteries when used in these devices? I've been picking up the lithium batteries that are supposed to last years and years. In other electronic devices, they HAVE. In this new cordless mouse and keyboard, it seems they need to be replaced every couple of WEEKS or the mouse and keyboard just stop working suddenly.

Is this normal? If I am going to be forced to buy a whole new eight pack of batteries every three months, I might as well go back to an older plain-vanilla model of mouse and keybaord with cords that plug directly in to the motherboard.

Thanks,

-NYC

A:Cordless Mouse/Keyboard Battery Life Expectancy?

My keyboards last months between changes. But mice vary a lot. Those that automatically turn off after an interval obviously last longer than those that don't.

The mouse I am using right now needs new batteries about every 2 days. Yes, 2 days. Lithiums may last 3 days. I have 2 of these kb/mouse sets and the other is just the same. So, I use rechargeable NiMH batteries. They last almost as long as regular batteries (and twice as long as NiCAD's). I have the charger handy and just change them as needed. You really need to do something similar or a year of batteries will cost you a fortune.

Most I have had last about a month. I wouldn't say that 2 weeks is too bad, depending how long the machine is used each day.

Hello,
I have to use my mothers laptop to transfer mp3s from CDs to a mp3 player, now here is the problem, she thinks that using her CD player will shorten its life expectancy, I argue that they have brushless motors that dont wear out, she argues that the dust on the CDs (even if cleaned) will settle in the CD drive and cause it do malfunction.

I would really like to know from the experts now, how and if making use of a CD rom drive affect its life.

And while we are at it, she also doenst let me put much on the hardrive under the arguement that it slows the computer down, is that true? but even if, the computer would run fine after deleting what I put on, no?

I really would appriciate an expert answer on this as I simply cant argue from my point of knowlege.

A:The average life of a GPU

A GPU's lifespan is at least 3-5 years. Hell, if you take care of your components it will last as long as you need it to in most cases. The fact that your GPU's are dieing in a year is strange. If this has indeed happened to all of your GPU's it is safe to say that the operating conditions inside your PC may not be too good. Or, you may just be burning them out? Do you SUPER overclock them or something? What sort of operating temps do you usually get?

Hi,

Currently I am having acer laptop 4738Z model that I purchased last year in the month of February.

I use it on ac power more often that in battery mode.

On an average, I work on laptop for about 5 hours in ac power mode and merely 1 hour on battery mode.

Please tell me the average lifetime of the battery that I can have from this kind of usage.

A:average battery life of laptop

Laptop batteries do usually drain fairly fast, especially if you're doing a lot on them. Though 1 hour is pretty short.

When your laptop is disconnected from AC adapter, do you turn on Power Saving Mode?

Do you turn your brightness down?

Do you just browse the web/perform simple tasks that aren't power hungry?

Also, whenever you are running your laptop from the AC adapter, take out the battery. Leaving the battery in while it's plugged in to the charger long-term can cause your battery to die out faster than it should.

Perhaps it's overheating a bit due to dust build-up? I have a DSL modem/router combo and it's pretty warm. Since taking it apart is a bit of a pain, I use compress air & vacuum cleaner on it from time to time.

7 years does sound long, so might be better to replace it and give yourself the peace of mind.

Hi:

All of a sudden when I start my dell - it does not boot. I just get an amber blinking light on the start up button. Nothing on the monitor. We have had many power outages in my area after which this happens. After a day or so the Dell will boot up. Yesterday I just pressed restart and since then all I am getting is the amber blinking light again on the start up button and nothing on the screen. Any tips or ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Hi all, i'm trying to upgrade my Dell Dimesnion 3000 Desktop (due to tight budget and being unable to buy a new computer) so it's able to play some more modern pc games (i.e. civ iv or civ v) but i'm not really much of a tech geek when it comes to computer hardware upgrades and i was wondering if you guys can recommend what i should get to upgrade the dimension 3000 best.
My PC Specs:
CPU: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.66GHz
RAM: 512 MB
Video Card: Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller
Sound Card: SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio
70 GB of Memory Available

Thanks!

A:Need help upgrading Dell Dimension 300 desktop

Well I hate to be that guy, but your PC really outdated. I understand being on a tight budget but upgrading that machine would cost much more then buying something a bit more modern.

The motherboard (Socket 478) will limit you to the older Pentium 4 CPUs.
You are also limited to DDR RAM and a PCI (not to be confused with PCIE) video bus.

Honestly it is not be possible to upgrade the machine to play Civ 5.

My Dell dimension xp os, boots up but does not show the desktop. It shows my backround picture but nothing else except this error message Explorer.exe-Application Error The application failed to inialize properly (0xc0000005) click on ok to terminate the application. booting into safe mode i get the same msg.
can anyone help?

A:Dell dimension desktop hijacked

when you are at that screen, hit "CONTROL+ALT+DELETE" to bring up the Task Manager, then click on the "Applications Tab". Then Click On "New Task" then you have a few options...1) you can do a System File Check to repair all critical system files (including Explorer.exe), To do this once you click on New Task, type: sfc /scannow (note that this will require your windows disk...follow the steps and wait until it asks you for the disk)2) or you can Try to restore your computer using System Restore. To Do this once you click on new task, type: msconfig and then hit ok, then click on "System Restore" and pick a date when you know your computer was working properly to restore to. 3) or you when you click on "New Task" you can click "Browse" You can then browse through your folders on your computer and go into your C:/Program Files/ and then locate a program you want to run (possibly your virus scanner, or Spyware scanner).Hope that Helps!

I've got a Dell Dimension 4550 desktop that I've had for 7 years. It has worked fine but lately, I've been having problems related to the monitor and I hope someone can offer some advice (besides buying a new system).

For some reason, my monitor goes into "sleep" mode shortly after booting up my system. The only way to avoid this problem is to go into safe mode but I can't access the internet in safe mode. Any ideas on how to resolve this problem? I've already tried restoring my system (several times) to a previous date (going back several months) but to no avail.

Any ideas on how to resolve this problem?

Hi all,  Hope someone can help me.  I have a Dell Dimension 8400, I know very old.  We unplugged the computer the other day to move it and now when we turn it on the it just we get a screen that says "Utility partition not available - strike F1 to reboot , F2 for setup utility".  We hit F1 and it repeats the phrase, we hit F2 and it takes us to the System Info (Blue screen).

We just want to be able to get to the desk top so we can get our work.  Does anyone know why this might be happening and how to fix it.  Mind you we are not tech savvy and anything that involving navigating thru the computer might be a little challenging for us, but any help would be appreciated.

I have a Dell Dimension 8250 (533MHz FSB) Desktop with 512 ram which occupies 2 slots. There are still two open slots but according to both Dell and Crucial the remaining slots should not be upgraded and that my memory is maxed out at 512. I had cosidered upgrading to Windows Vista but this would be a stretch on this machine and only made worse with 512 ram. What is the reason for the max of 512 with two open slots?
Thanks

Well that's not strictly true. I can sometimes get it to work by sitting there for half an hour pressing the on button hundreds of times (if I'm lucky) When it does boot everything seems to work OK. Other times it just won't boot at all. No fans turn on. No diagnostic lights on the back of the unit. There is a green LED on the motherboard which always glows when I turn it on at the wall.

I've replaced the motherboard with an identical but new one and same problem. I took out the hard drive and had it checked at PC world - they say it seems fine.

Anyone any idea what the problem is? Is is the Processor? (Pentium 4) Is it the Power supply? Anything else?

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

So, I've heard from numerous people that Dell always has a lot of problems and trying to to a simple system recovery will cost you extra for the software and everything. But, is it possible to fix this without ordering any extras? this is the exact message as follows that shows up when started(it shows during a blue screen as well):

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Disbale or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Hi there, my friends Vista desktop has got the dreaded BSOD error and it will not boot.
Stop: 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0x8796A350, 0x8796A49C, 0x82860710)

I believe this is a hardware issue. I have tried running in safe mode, I have ran the startp repair and it says it can't fix this error, I then tried to do a System restore from the repair menu and it still gave the bsod, I tried chkdsk/r in command prompt and it can't get that far on boot.
I have removed all the RAM sticks and checked them and it apears they are not faulty.
I removed the cmos battery and then replaced it and it said voltage was low, could this be the problem?

I have also inserted a Vista dvd to try and boot the recovery console but as its loading up, about 3/4 of the way through it stops and gives error 0xc00000e9.
I can only guess this must be a hardware error.
i think he turned the PC off during a Windows update so could ahve messed it up.
Could the PSU be at falt, the wire makes 'crackling' noises when moved so maybe it has shorted in the past.

THanks for the help

Ben

I've been trying to bring my husband's older Dell 8100 P4 desktop back to life. It was an old ME system initially. I've done the following:

* Replaced the motherboard and ide cables
* New CMOS battery
* Flashed BIOS
* Replaced and upgraded the memory
* Reformatted the harddrive (using another system) and loaded Win XP Pro

I've used this same harddrive (with XP Pro) sucessfully on another Dell so I know there is nothing wrong with the boot files. But when I install it in the broke Dell...no joy.

It hangs in the "Windows can not start normally" pick Safe Mode, Last Known Good Config...etc loop. None of the options work and it flashes a quick BSOD dump error (too fast for me to see) and then back through the loop.

The BIOS recognizes all the drives, the memory, processor, etc.

I also tried to boot with alot of the extra hardware removed (removed NIC, sound card, modem, un-hooked optical drives, etc) --- still same no-boot loop.

I do not want to give up -- and at this point, I just want to concur it if nothing else. I'd appreciate any ideas.

Thanks,
Kristine

Hello. I have a Dimension 1100 with the motherboard built in Intel Graphics card. I've bought a Club 3D ATI Radeon card (PCI) with 128 Mb memory to upgrade. I've put it in one of the PCI slots, attached the monitor cable to the new card and started the system up and the monitor goes black. If I switch monitor cable to the original motherboard graphics card everything's OK. Anybody have a clue what the problem might be? I've gone into BIOS and checked the graphics setting to be on Auto. I've also tried with another card (A Rage II 3D) and this works fine. Could it simply be that the new card is not working, or have I missed something out?

This question is for my family member that moved their desk, moved a wire on back of his tower and no matter what, this tower will not turn back on.
I'm assuming there was a fuseable link that blew that caused the power failure.
Instead of following the standard idea of calling someone to fix it, they have taken it to a repair shop that "may" take 5 days for the fix.
My question,
Was this something very simple to correct? It was connected to a battery back up and I don't know if a surge caused this...who knows.

Are there parts exploded views of the product makers equipment that shows this possible problem?

I just feel that they should of called a computer repair service and fix it right on the spot, no other way.

A:Internal Fuse blown on Dell Dimension Desktop 2300

It's hard to say. There are fuses inside power supplies, but they are usually soldered in and not accessible. A new power supply is the likely fix, and that could be done quickly on the spot.

After the power supply is the main board. That gets 12 or 5 volts and may or may not be fused at all, but if it is, that is probably soldered, too. But any wires accessible from the back would be a danger possibly to the power supply, but not the board. If no surge or short went to the board, the power supply replacement should take care of it.

Someone familiar with the model who had the right power supply could replace it in 5 minutes. If they never saw that model before in their lives and took some time getting the case off, 10 minutes. If that didn't do it, then the shop.

Some few machines have unusual power supplies that are for that model only. But the large majority of them, well over 90%, are generic and the same shape and size.

The desktop is running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3.

I like to hear forum members opinion.
Just recently fixed the issue with Dell Dimension 4300, machine didn't power up when power switch pressed. I replaced original dead 250W PSU with new 430W dual fan and now comp is running. This PC is:
Intel 845 1.6 GHz internally and 400 MHz externally. 4 DMA channels and SDRAM PC133 512 mb of memory.
I also upgraded USB to 2.0, nice 128MB video card and some other goodies.
Now, I got another stock Dell Dimension 8100 without papers, but I check and this particular one has:
Intel 850 1.4 GHz internally and 400 MHz externally. 8 DMA channels and 384 mb RDRAM of memory. Nothing was done to this machine, and it also have original working 250W PSU.
What better to do? Keep the Dimension 4300 or remove goodies that compatible with 8100 motherboard, including fabricating in, new, dual fan PSU and excluding memory, I assume SDRAM and RDRAM not compatible and transfer to Dimension 8100?
Is 8100 machine more advanced then 4300? I know they both pretty old and outdated. I personally bough 4300 for my dad in 2001. Is 8100 was produced later? I see that CPU is Intel 850 vs 845..
Guys, opinion welcome.
Thanks,
Alex

How do I open this thing?!!! Maggie

A:Solved: How to Open an Old Dell Dimension computer

There's likely buttons on the top and bottom that you press and it opens like it's hinged on the front.

Other models just have a latch that releases the side like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsgynopUEiw

However that's just a guess as there are thousands of Dell Dimension models and you haven't mentioned which one you have.

Tried reseating main power connector, RAM, all PC cards. When I first press the power on button I do not get even a slight indication that the power supply kicked on then off. Need possibliities or solution!

A:Computer will not power up - Dell Dimension 8400

My first guess would be the pw supply however it cannot hurt to do some troubleshooting.
1 Open the case and pull the pw connectors from ALL drives; both hard disk and optical type drives.
2 Disconnect any usb type device; ie hub, scanner, printer, etc.
3 Pull out any add-in cards except the video card
4 Now attempt a pw ON. If you get a display, great. If not shutdown the system
5 Locate the pw switch leads on the motherboard. Remove the lead. Use a small screwdriver or other metal part to jump across the pins on the motherboard. If it still does not pw ON and post, clear cmos and repeat.

If still no post in the above config, you need to start swapping parts with known good units. Start with the pw supply since that is much easier to change out than the mb.

Hi all!
I started my computer today and got a black screen with white text stating:
X300 SE 128MB P/N 113-a33406-100

And nothing else. That happens to be my graphics card, the one that came with my Dell when I bought it in May 2005. The question I have is this: is it dead? Is my computer telling me that it can't start because of that card? I've never had any problems with it before--in fact I was instancing in WoW last night before I went to bed. I'm assuming that since the card and computer are both so old that my card probably crapped out, but I'd like some confirmation before I go out searching for a new card.

As stated in the subject, it's a Dell Dimension 4700. I haven't done any changes.

I cannot get into windows at all--I can't even get into the startup screen. Occasionally when I start the computer it will show the Windows screen with the flag, and the little bar that says it's loading, but it freezes automatically, giving me no options like the bios or setup or anything.

Also, I tried taking out the card, cleaning out the inside of the computer, and reseating the card, and it hasn't made a different either positive or negative. Please help!

A:Computer freezes at start up Dell Dimension 4700 Problem

My guess is that self test is hanging at the next thing it tries, after the graphics card. Maybe it can't find a keyboard, floppy drive (if you have one), or hard drives.

Are you able to get into the BIOS setup? That would eliminate the keyboard as a possible cause. Then check to see if your drives are recognized.

BUT BUT BUT there is a small problem with it. the battery light always blinks like it is running on reserve... ex: orange-orange-orange-orange-green. It's really annoying, and stressfull on my eyes at times. Is there an upgrade to my bios i can get that will eliminate this? is there a way i can disconnect the battery light? Flat out is there any way i can get rid of this problem cause it's really bugging me. Thanks! (it even does it when it's plugged in)

How old is the battery in that laptop???? Sounds like the battery lagging as when it gets charged up and your using the mains it should stay green

I have one, have had many issues with it, and know of many people who had many issues with it. Luckily, I paid quite a cheap price on this laptop. If I hadn't, I'd feel very robbed of my money. All in all, I've heard many, many stories (bad) about this laptop and Dell in general. I think I'll stick to building my own computer.

A:Dell Inspiron 1100

Dell had some troubles with the Dell 1100, 1150, 5100, 5150, and 5160... all very similar. They were fixed for most users while under warranty. You might want to talk to Dell Tech Support on the phone.
We have several clients with this laptop who are now quite happy with it.

I was recently given a Dell Inspiron 1100. The computer itself works, but the screen is completly blank. I hooked another monitor to it and that works. Does anyone have any suggestions as to why the screen isn't working on the laptop?
Thanks.

Is it possible to overclock a DELL Latitude 1100?
If so, which BIOS would it require and what would the proceedure be?
Hardware mods? BIOS settings (if possible)? etc?

A:DELL Latitude 1100 Over-Clocking?

Sorry for rain you a bad news.

Dell laptop has a locked CPU and FSB, which you can't do anything about it.

There is only thing you can do is to overclock video card. That it.

Sorry to let you know.

Regards Lucan

P.S. There is a program that allow you to adjust the FSB and voltage just little bit. I recommend you to leave the voltage as default, or you will risk to lose the laptop.

Notebook Hardware Control can be found in here.

Hello there. My sister recieved a Dell Inspiron 1100 for her graduation about four years ago and she's having problems with it after never mistreating it noticably. M'kay... the problem is that when the laptop is turned on and she attempts to put in her password to get on her computer the keyboard seems to recieve input from nowhere. No keys are being pressed, yet the text box for her password is automatically filled and it won't recognize any keys when they are actually pressed. Also, the mouse seems to do about the same... It won't be touched and it would creep up the screen or disappear completely. There are other times when her laptop won't even give a visual what-so-ever.

If anyone knows of anything that can be done I'd really appreciate any helpful advice.

A:Dell Inspiron 1100 issues...

Hi there. you dont say whether this happens at windows logon or whether it is a system (bios based) logon. but anyway it sounds to me like virus activity and you should run a virus recovery program that boots from from a CD and then when you get the system started run a full system scan with updated antivirus software.

I have a dell Inspiron 1100 - Works great - I reloaded the O.S (Windows Xp Home - and updated the drivers - I believe that I update a BAD BIOS file - and the comes up with BLUE SCREEN. I have powered it off - Put the O.S. Disk in the drive - and rebooted the system. It takes me thru the steps for loading the O.S. Reads the hard drive - and starts loading all the needed drivers - and then fails . I suspect BAD BIOS. How can I get the BIOS bad to factory setting. I have searched the internet - and most of the blogs suggest the following below. Any confirmation or suggestions on how to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciatd.

DELL Inspiron 1100
BIOS - A32
Hard Disk:: 30GB
Memory: 1GB
DVD -RW/CDRW
O.S - Windows XP Home

You may find the resetting the bios to the default using the jumper or removing the cmos battery will fix that.

A:Dell Inspiron 1100 won't bootup

Well if it was a bad Bios flash then your computer would not boot up at all. What you need to do is Post what the bluescreen says, usually toward the top there is a file or error that will show what the issue is.

But my guess without knowing any more info is that it could be Bad memory stick in your computer. If you have more then 1 stick remove one and try to reload windows again. If you still get the same error then put that stick back in and take out the other ram stick and see if you get the same error.

post back with results.

Hi everybody,

I have an old Dell Inspiron 1100 (Celeron 2.4) with 256MB RAM (two 128MB sticks). A friend of mine gave me a 512MB stick and I happily thought that I finally would be able to upgrade the memory of my old friend. The new memory I got is:

Kingston ValueRAM 512MB 266MHz DDR Non-ECC CL2.5 200 Pin SODIMM
(KVR266X64SC25/512)

However, when I install the new memory the laptop won't start! The LED blinks for 5-10 seconds and then the computer turns off. When I put back my old memory everything works fine again. I've tried it with the new memory alone in both of the empty slots and also together with one of the two 128MB sticks. I've tried all possible combinations but the laptop simply doesn't start whenever the 512MB module is installed. What's going on? I thought this memory was compatible with the Inspiron. Am I wrong?

Cheers,
Ma

Dear friends, I have a laptop that I would like to format c drive I have no Idea how to do this, if I insert windows xp cd on drive it does not read it. please if you can tell me how to format and load a clean version of windows xp it will be appreciated Thank you.

A:Help Formating Dell 1100 Laptop

To boot from a Windows XP CD, you'll need to make sure your BI/OS options are set to boot from CD. Press F2 on startup to enter the BI/OS settings, and look under System for Boot Sequence. Alter the options there so that the optical drive is selected, then exit the BI/OS (saving the settings as you leave) and restart the machine and press F12 to show the Boot Menu, then select your optical drive from the list (making sure the CD is in the drive ).

I have been wondering for a while that my Inspiron 1100 has been running a little hot - the fan is always on and running hard even when the system is idle.

I downloaded a temperature monitor which gives me a HD0 temperature of 67degrees C which seems quite high - especially as the default setting was for an alarm to sound at 60degrees C.

My system doesn't shut down due to overheating, and I have checked the fan and heat sync air holes on the bottom and side and they don't look blocked with dust.

I have heard a few suggestions about dealing with the problem but to be honest I have never had any experience with this before so unsure how to proceed.

Suggestions have included everything from buying compressed air and blasting the heat sync and fan and using cotton swabs to clean it, right through to taking it apart and adding more thermal grease between the CPU housing and the heat sync.(i have never taken my laptop apart before)

I would appreciate any and all help on this issue

Ok this is the mother of all problems,

My Inspiron has suddenly stopped working. By this I mean when it's turned on all the LEDs light up as they should but the screen is completely dead. I don't think it has something to do with the screen because I have tried connecting it to another monitor but nothing shows because the keyboard doesn't execute what I press. (the caps lock light doesn't light up when I press the key if that means anything). Well that's all about I can tell you that I have done. I tried running just with the battery reinstalled the battery tried using an external keyboard but nothing happened. Another thing is that I used to keep it on alot maybe even for several days I don't know if that might have killed an internal battery even though it used to sleep and I only had it for a year.
any Ideas?

Do you hear any Fans ?
Portables are not like Desktops , in that it is not good to leave them on for days at a time .I realize they shut power levels down ,If the APM is set right.
If you are not seeing any screen including boot screens ,just call Dell and make arrangements to send it back for repair (Sounds like your under Warranty)
Don't tell them you leave it on for days , just say it stopped.
BTW Welcome to Techspot!

I found 2 Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop's in a yard sale (they are identical). I got a good deal on them. 1 did work 100%. The 2nd one worked 100% but only on the battery. The 2nd one has a problem with the charging circuit, the 2nd laptop won't charge the battery and won't run off the ac power pack.
The 1st laptop the video has stopped working. There is nothing on the lcd screen or an external monitor. But the cpu fan turns, the dvd drive does it's thing on start up, I can hear the hard drive working and the lights are normal. I tried swapping out both the video card and the cpu from the 2nd Dell laptop. That didn't fix the problem. I ordered a 1100 mother board from Ebay (old stock, never opened, never used) That mother board arrived Sept 3rd. Still the same problem. Nothing on ether screen. But the rest of the laptop works. The Ebay seller sent an other mother board out. That mother board arrived today (Sept-9th). I still have the same problem. I am beating my head on a brick wall on this one. I need some help.

A:a question about a dell inspiron 1100

Considering the fact they are both 10 years old it would of been a much better deal if they were both in working order.due to the ages i really dont think either one is worth fixing and putting more money and parts into them might be a lesson in futility.i think all you can do is either save or sell the ram, hard drives, and cd drives and any other parts if they still work to maybe use in another dell laptop in the future.

Hi

I have a Dell Ispiron 1100

It won't turn on

I press the power button and if there is no AC power attached
the lights light up while I press the button, but no start up

When the AC power is attached, I don't get any lights at all

It's been happening for a while

I used to flip it over and pull out the battery, then replace it
and try again, after a few times it worked

Then I realised that just by opening the screen and trying it, then closing
the screen, then opennng and trying again... after a few times it would start

(are there any wires that would be affected by that??)

Once it started, so long as I left it plugged in, and the screen open it would always restart first go

I also think, that when it was unplugged, closed, etc so long as I started it agin fairly soon, it worked

I've just been overseas for a week in a colder climate and now I can't seem to get it started at all

I've tried with battery in, with battery out, AC in AC out

Any help would be much appreciated

Dell Inspiron won't turn on

We have a professor at our university that turned in a Dell laptop with exactly the same symptoms!

Really, with the battery alone installed, the lights flash momentarily when the power button is pressed. If the charger is connected (or the charger alone): no lights
(Just like Christoff)

The machine won't start up and there was some story about how it died last time the lid was closed. We are suspicious of a faulty lid interlock that is keeping the laptop in hibernate (or some deep, permanent sleep).

Another theory - Does anyone know if these have an internal power fuse, such that the external power brick isn't actually getting DC into the main board or charging the installed battery? We can't find any info about the power distribution or a schematic.

Just this week, my laptop starting giving me a BSOD. The error code changed with every restart. Now, after 3 days of online chats with Dell, the blue screen is gone but my laptop takes forever to do anything. I am running Windows xp OS. I finally was able to view my task manager and it is showing my CPU usage at 100%...OMG! I've also noticed that even though I have no Running Programs showing, the Processes is showing 23. There is also 8 different items showing for "svchost.exe".

I am not very computer literate, so any help that may be offered will have to be given in simple terms.

Could I possibly have a virus???

Please help,

Selena

P.S. I am not currently using the laptop because it takes forever to boot and even longer to access the internet.

I have an old Dell Inspiron 1100 that was given to me. Reformatted Windows XP and now I can't get on the internet through the Ethernet adapter from Cablevision. On device manager the following drivers are missing: Multimedia audio controller; PCI Modem; and USB Controller (although I downloaded a Broadcom USB controller). Would this effect internet access? If so, how do I remedy? I have already been to Dell's driver downloads and don't see these drivers. Thanks.

If you can, try the parts such as memory and cpu in another known-good box.
This way you can rule out certain parts, leading you to the source of the problem eventualy.

This Dell Inspiron 1100 (os xp pro, a 1gig cpu around 1gig of main memory and a 250gb hard drive) is working but it offen will reboot it self, prog's lockup and shut down and both Firefox and Internet Explorer will crash and shut down. I need to fig out why it crashes and reboots it self. I have a spare 1100 laptop that I can take spare parts off of. The motherboard in the 2nd laptop is dead. I know it is an old laptop but this is what I have to work with in a portable setup to take with me until I can afford to replace it with a newer laptop.

Are you getting any notices about battery power? Are you plugged into A/C when this happens? How about the bios.....have you checked in there for power management settings? When you power it back up, does it go into full boot or does it come up as if it's been in hibernation?

Hi Guys,

I am planning to buy a laptop and am struck at these 2 options:

Dell Inspiron 14z: (key features)

3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i5-3317U processor (3M Cache, up to 2.6 GHz)
8GB3 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz
14" High Definition LED Display (1366 x 768) with Truelife
500GB 5400 RPM SATA HDD and 32GB mSATA SSD
AMD Radeon HD7570M 1GB

Vs:
HP Envy 14t-1100 (key features)

3rd generation Intel Core i5-3317U(1.7 GHz) + 2GB AMD Radeon HD 7670M Discrete-Class Graphics
6GB 1600MHz DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
500GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
14.0" diagonal HD BrightView LED-backlit Display (1366 x 768)

So guys which one will you suggest to me? I need this laptop for programming, running programming softwares, multitasking, and gaming. Can BF4, Call of Duty 4 and other such games be played on these laptops?

Thanks

Here's the problem: While using my Dell 1100 laptop, I opened three different programs at once -iTunes, FL Studios, and a Gameboy emulator- all of which use a decent amount of RAM. The laptop was running slow, but was fine other wise until I accidentally blocked off the fan, which caused it to overheat and turn itself off. Upon turning it back on though, I found that it only displayed the opening Dell logo and loading page, but didn't go pass that. The Windows loading page didn't even show. All that shows after the Dell page is a black screen with a blinking space bar. Something similar to this has happened before and a family member got it fixed for me. That family member isn't here though, and I could really use some help with this. Anyone?? Thanks in advance!

A:My Dell 1100 either overheated or crashed doing more than my RAM allows

even though it overheated... it shounds like your hard drives bad... just because it wont continue to boot... since its a dell... turn the computer on and hit the F-12 key that will bring up a boot menu, then select either hard drive diagnostic, or diagnostics and it will go from there... should help you narrow down your problem
