What type of power adapter do I need?

Q: What type of power adapter do I need?

I am planning on making this project myself but first I have one question. Here is the project I will be making:
http://siliconrepublic.blogspot.com.au/2011/02/arduino-based-pc-ambient-lighting.html

It says I need a 12V DC supply for powering the breadboard. When searching up for 12V DC supplies, I only get power supply's that plug into the wrong wall socket (I live in Australia).
Do I need to get something like the article suggests:
http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-AC-Veh...1KZ6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1297231222&sr=8-2

Or can I get something such as this:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DC-12V-1...?pt=AU_Laptop_Accessories&hash=item336678ae52
If the first option is the only possibility, how do I get the plug to go into my wall socket?
Also, how do I get the other end plugged into the breadboard when the product just has a single plug on the end?

A: What type of power adapter do I need?

You can use the Ebay adaptor, the easiest way to get 2 wires is to get a socket that fits the plug, like this one :- http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/5-5-x-2-...05?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item4167b5b34d and solder 2 wires to that socket.

The circuit at your link uses a 2 wire plug into the breadboard, you would have to get a similar plug OR you could push bare wires into the breadboard.

OR you could cut the plug off to reveal the 2 wires but they will probably be quite thin and may not connect well if pushed into the breadboard holes.

So.. I see this problem has been posted about before, so I just wanna know what my options are.
This problem actually popped up on me a few months ago, but I was able to remove and insert the power cord a few times and the message would go away and I would be able to charge my battery. But as a month or two passed, it became more finicky, and I had to jiggle with it a little more, but still, I was able to charge my battery and use my laptop wire-free.
Now today, I've been trying all day, and cannot for the life of me get the battery to charge. I get the following message when I plug the wire in.
"The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher for best system operation."
Also, I think its worth nothing that a lot of people mention that this error message comes up while they are booting their Laptops, mine only comes up once Vista is loaded and I attempt to reinsert the cord.
So, I have tried another Dell charger, a 90W one, and the same problem does occur (My original is a 65W). I am planning on getting a different battery tomorrow to see if it is the battery, as this ones usable life was getting quite low, down to barely a half hour per full charge. My warranty, although I'm not sure of the specifics, was not expired when this problem first came up, but is now expired by I would say 2 months at the most.

At a minimum, the power jack on the mainboard needs to be replaced - if that doesn't fix it or a competent repair shop tells you it won't, you'll need to replace the system board.

Hi there forum,

I just bagged an Lcd monitor for nowt but have no power supply for it.
The rear panel says 12V 3.0A DC power supply, but I can't find any of this type, I've tried Maplin, play.com etc and all they suggest is 300mA, now I thought 3.0 A was 3000mA?

Do I need to go back to electronic school basics?
Thanks

Hi!

Awhile ago, I started getting this error message when I started up my computer (after the initial Dell screen). It stated:

The AC adapter type cannot be determined. This will prevent optimal system performance.

Strike the F3 key (before the F1 or F2 key) if you do not want to see power warning messages again.

Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the set up utility.

-----

I ignored this problem for awhile by just hitting F1. However, within the last month, it has gotten worse. Instead of this error message coming up when I started my computer - after the initial Dell screen, nothing would come up except a little flashing line in the top left hand corner of the screen, and the computer would not start up passed that. I proceeded to fiddle with the plug that I plug into my laptop from adapter. I would push it harder into the laptop and/or twist it in after I hit the start up button, waiting to see if, after the initial Dell screen, I could get the error message to come up again so I could hit F1 so my computer would actually start up. I really don't know if any of that helped, but I figure if it was the adapter, then I should try something like that. I even blew it the plug and into the socket in the laptop tonight. However, tonight, I almost could not get the computer to start up all the way - I kept getting the screen with the little blinking line after the initial Dell screen and no error message. Eventually, after trying several times, I did get the error ... Read more

This is a common problem (I see lots of posts)
The problem source is the [Dell] AC adapter.  PA-21 Family, 65W, P/N: NX061.  It is made in China.
I have an XPS M1330.  Using Dell after warranty service, replaced the Mother Board twice, replaced the battery twice, replaced the AC adapter twice - not fixing it.
Turns out the power warning message is very informative.  It states "Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for best system performance".  So, I plugged in my Dell 95W adapter - WOW Problem Solved.
A lab test of my new Dell 65W AC adapter shows it to be 64.6 watts.  If this unit gets hot (like after several hours of use), it may not put out the full 65 watts - the system may not recognize the adapter, it may power the system ok, but won't charge the battery.
These units burn out after only a few months of use. Their cables are too fragile. If Dell's or their supplier's Quality Control can't produce a reliable 65W product - I found seveal "Made In USA" universal adapters.

A:AC Adapter - Alert - "AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined"

Well my solution was simple.
I just removed the battery pack and powered up my notebook. Then I turned off the notebook replaced the battery pack and VOILA. The error message was gone.

My Dell Inspiron 6400 HDD damaged without any warning last week and cannot be repaired, so i had to replace it with another HDD. Everything works fine after that except that when i plugged in my AC adapter, the power warning message “The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher for best system operation" will appear, and my battery will not charge.

Previously this power warning message will occur only when i didn't plug in properly and it worked fine after i replug the adapter. Since i changed my HDD, this warning message appears everytime i turn on my laptop. I tried updating the BIOS but it doesn't help, the problem is still there. I suspect that my AC adapter is damaged but when i tried it with another Inspiron 6400, it worked fine without the warning message appearing, that shows that there isn't any problem with my AC adapter..

Any solutions for this? I hope i don't have to change the motherboard or whatsoever, because my laptop is out of warranty. Is it something to do with the configuration? - since i formatted my computer and reinstalled everything..

thanks heaps for any comments!

A:Power adapter type cannot be determined after replacing new HDD

You may have a damaged DC jack in the laptop if the adapter works on another laptop, which would go with you replugging the power adapter to clear the error in the past. Its not uncommon for the jacks to break from the motherboard and require re-soldering, in some cases the jacks crack or break and need to replaced. To get at the jack you will need to have the laptop completely disassembled.

P.S. 'spoiled' isn't not the correct term to use with failed electronics.

Hello, from few days a have problem with my AC power adapter. My system says: "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined... lalalala" when my Windows says Plugged in, not charging. CPU performance does not exceed 0,78GHz.I tried to uninstall the drivers - nothing.
I tried update my BIOS - nothing.
Replace AC - nothing
Exclude malfunctioning AC adapter.
Sometimes after a few connections begins to charge my battery, and it is a day where you do not try to charge.
But I found a solution, which is always charge my battery.
when i turn off the system, and then pulled out the battery. I push the button 'power on' for 10 seconds. And then I put back the battery and plug the charger. I turn on the system and everything works.
But once again, disconnect and plug the charger that stops charging

Where is the problem?

Hi WLODZIAK,
Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system?
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point. Check the battery health in BIOS (if applicable).
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.
Since you have replaced the adapter, if the battery has good health, then then next part to be replaced would be the dc port - you would need this part - http://bit.ly/2d2vuCc
If nothing works, the motherboard might be at fault.
If the system is under warranty, Please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name, Phone#, Address and Email). If there is no warranty, then you could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call - http://dell.to/1vnT6CQ

Hi! I don't know what's the cause of my problem and will be appreciated for any info.
Suddenly, I started getting this message, when I turn my laptop on. It won't recognize my AC adapter, and won't charge the battery.
I have Dell Inspiron 6400/1505, windows XP.
I tried to flash BIOS, took out and put back in the battery. Check the plug, it looks ok. Battery's LED lights show it works fine.
I saw that so many people have this problem, but did not find any ways to solve it. Or any reasons why it happened. If anybody knows what to do, please share with us regular PC users.

As iv tested it with known working chargers and batteries.
Can anyone *** me with this knowledge or allow me to get a schematic for the mother board?

For the last two weeks, every time I start my Dell INSPIRON E1705 while using the power supply I am greeted with the following message. "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 90W AC adapter or higher for best system operation". I press the F1 Key and everything works fine. I've read about this on other websites and most say it's a design flaw in the power supply after the cord has been properly wound around the supply as designed. Apparently a few of the cords internal wire strands become broken and cause this message. My computer is from June 2006 and shouldn't be having this issue so early...or ever. This seems like a flaw that should have created some type of manufacturers recall since so many people are having this issue. I'm of course out of warranty, will Dell replace this free of charge?

A:Power Supply - "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined....."

You are correct, the failure is due toloss of the power supply ID signal. Sometimes this happens because of strain on the plug, which breaks the signal wire. Some even are so severe that the insulation breaks away from the plug; this is due to rough handling. The other cause is one or more of the power socket solder connections to the system board become broken. This also is related to severe handling. I have seen one case where all three power connections and three of four mechanical connections were disconnected. If the power supply is bad, a replacement will cure the problem. If not, then the socket is bad, and this will require a system board replacement. If you are experienced, you can try to resolder the connections. I am experienced and was not able to get my daughter's E6000 to work by resoldered. More recent Dells are using a replacable power connection board which is a much cheaper repair.

I had to replace the power cord (from the outlet to the box) on my AC adapter. It worked fine for awhile; but now I'm getting this message on boot up. "Warning. The AC adapter type cannot be determined. This will prevent optimal system performance. Please check AC adapter is connected properly. Remove AC adapter and plug it in again." I tried plugging it in again several times to no avail. Then my virus program (Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 14) popped up a window to start in Safe Mode to fix the problem. I know how to start in Safe Mode but don't know what to do once I'm in there. Any help will be appreciated.

My laptop will no longer turn on.  When the AC adapter is plugged in, the LED light is white indicating power is arriving at the laptop. However, nothing happens when I push the power button. Troubleshooting steps I have completed already include: Hard reset (several times including after each step below)Tried starting without the batteryRemoved all removable components and reseated themRemoved all removable components as well as bottom cover. Cleaned with compressed air. Put everything back.Nothing appears wrong and nothing happened between the last time it turned on and this time that I am aware of. The laptop is out of warranty, and I am pretty handy with computers. Is there anything that can be suggested short of a hardware replacement that would help get this resolved? TIA

The tips I got with this Kensington 33197 power adapter have numbers stenciled on them like N3, N5, N19, etc. The tips sold on their web site make no mention of the "N" numbers and have numbers like K20059, K20050, etc. and there is no cross reference.

You can also see a complete reference for "N" numbers to all the laptops they support at the above link. Again, no mention of the numbers Kensington uses on their site.

I need a cross reference for these kinds of numbers.

Kensington referred me to their telephone tech support; but, there is a language or cultural barrier that prevents their understanding what I need.

Does anyone know of such a reference?

Hello! I've been around here for a sometimes but never registered as a users because I find all the solution I needed, but I have one follow problems that I can't solve and I need sevenforum's help!

I recently bought Sapphire Radeon HD 6770 and comparing game performance with my old graphic card Nvidia 9800 GT, I don't see much of a difference. According to my friend who builds computer, he said it's suppose to be superior differences between those 2 graphic cards. I also tried to sign up for BETA profile for Blizzard game series and apparently it kept detecting the Radeon HD 4200, which is my integrated card. Anyways, my question is, how can I change my Adapter Type? I posted a picture of it so you guys can see what's my problem is. I have the latest Catalyst Control Panel from the sites sticky thread .

I don't know how to check my computer stuff, so here's my computer on website: HP - Pavilion Desktop / AMD Athlon™ II Processor / 4GB Memory / 750GB Hard Drive - p6654y

My english is my second language so if you can't understand what I said I'll be glad to explain again lol. Rough draft xD.

I've already tried Driver Sweeper, failed on me .

I don't know what BIOS means either lol.

If my integrated graphic card is disabled for good, I think I might get to see my 6770's full performance. Also tried overclocking, didn't helped at all :[. I still think it's my integrated card's problem, but hey I could be wrong. I'm terrible at computers .

Thanks.

A:Changing a video card adapter type help.

Assuming HP didn't hide the option in the bios (and I wouldn't put it past them), have a good look around likely in the Advanced section under Chipset. If it is don't disable it quite yet, first boot back to Windows and uninstall the AMD driver through Programs and Features using the Catalyst Install Manager. Then restart and go into the bios and disable, and re-install the AMD driver using the latest,

Latest AMD Catalyst Video Driver for Windows 7

unless that is the one you already have.

P.S. What you're seeing shouldn't happen, but with the way HP likes to hide/disable/monkey around in general with bios settings I'm not really surprised that it did. When it works properly (the AMD onboard video with an AMD video card) you can actually use both at the same time for running up to 4 (or 5 depending on video card) monitors at a time.

Is there a way for a Windows 10 firewall rule to determine what network adapter is in use? Can it differentiate between Wi-Fi, TAP, Ethernet, etc.?
Poking around Windows Firewall for the first time, I don't see any settings related to network adapter, but I wonder if the "local IP address" settings could be useful. Would the different adapters show up as different local IP addresses, in some way that is consistent enough to make a rule out of it?

I have an XPS 12 9250 with an external Dell Adapter USB Type C to HDMI/VGA/Ethernet/USB 470-ABQN.  This adapter is working for Ethernet and VGA, but the USB port is not working.  I suspect that I need the correct drivers installed.  When I plug in my windows phone or my android phone, both devices show that they are charging, but windows 10 does not indicate that it sees the devices.  If I plug in an external keyboard to the adapter's USB port, windows 10 does not react, and the keyboard lights do not come on (keyboard works fine on 2 other computers).
So, I'm pretty sure I've installed all the latest drivers that are listed on support.dell.com for the xps 12 9250, but it's hard to tell as there seem to be scores of them.
Is anyone else having this problem?  Can anyone tell me which specific drivers I need to get USB working?  Thank you

Hello - I am looking to standardize on the new HP Spectre 13-v-21nr at my company.  My question relates to the USB Type-C port and power delivery.  When the Spectre is in UFP mode (Power source, powering an external USB type-C device), which power delivery profiles are supported?   The new USB 3.1 power delivery spec provides the following profiles and I am most interested in understanding which profiles are supported by this new laptop.  The power-delivery spec allows for a maximum voltage of 20 V (4× the previous 5-V spec) and a maximum current of 5 A (more than 3× the previous max of 1.5 A). The power-delivery spec also classifies power sources in terms of profiles:? Profile 1 (Default Startup): 10 W (5 V @ 2 A)? Profile 2: 18 W (5 V @ 2 A -> 12 V @ 1.5A)? Profile 3: 36 W (5V @ 2 A -> 12 V @ 3A)? Profile 4 (Micro B/AB limit): 60 W (5 V @ 2 A -> 20 V @ 3 A)? Profile 5 (Standard B/AB limit): 100 W (5 V @ 2 A -> 20 V @ 5 A)

I bought a Dynex USB 2.0 4-Port Hub last week and have decided to add an external power supply to power the hub. The short and terse User Manual notes on the final page that a 5Volt / 2.5 Amp Power Adapter may be connected. I called their customer support number and talked to a lady, but her best advice was return to the store and ask there. My experience with this store over the years has been fat chance for this kind of request. Has anyone got a suggestion as to where I can purchase such a USB Power Adapter?

Radio Shack would be a good place to start although you might have to get one of their adjustable models. A Google search should also turn up something. Actually I just replaced my D-Link powered USB1 hub with a USB2 model. The old one is just sitting around and it has a 5V 2.4A adapter. If you want it so you can use the adapter just PM me and I'll send it to you.

A:Power Adapter

Hello aaronbaron,

Reseat the power adapter just means make sure the power adapter is plugged in good on the laptop and the wall outlet. I would try powering off the laptop, unplug the power cord, take the new battery out. Reinstall the new battery only and try to power on the computer. If that does not work plug in the power cord and power up with the new battery installed.

I have a Toshiba Satellite C655D that needs a replacement ac power adapter, when I look it up it says I need:

Laptop AC Adapter: 19 Volts, 75 Watts, 3.95 Amps, 5.5mm x 2.5mm Connector

or

Laptop AC Adapter: 19 Volts, 65 Watts, 3.42 Amps, 5.5mm x 2.5mm Connector

Someone gave me a new, in the box AC Adapter with USB port, made by Insignia.
The documentation says "converts 120v AC to 3-12v with 1300mA max output."

I realize this is a question not exactly hardware related, but I'm hoping someone knows the answer....I'm afraid to plug it in and fry my laptop

Can anybody answer the following questions about a laptop power adapter?

Is there a maximum length for the dc cord? In other words why do they locate the adapter 1/2 way down the cord instead of closer to the outlet.

Is the small cylinder around the cord about 3" before it enters the laptop some sort of choke/filter?

Thanks.

There is no particular reason for this, either side of the power supply could be lengthened or shortened.

The Yoga 3 Pro power adapter looks like a normal USB brick, and the cord looks like USB, except with a kink in the connector at the Yoga 3 Pro end. Can I charge my phone or tablet with it?

A:What's with the Yoga 3 Pro power adapter - it's a ...

Yes the Yoga 3 Pro power adapter is a USB charger too!

How does it work?

The special "fool proof" charging cord has two extra pins on the AC adapter end and two extra pins on the Yoga 3 Pro end. The extra pins only make a connection when the fool proof cord is plugged in to the Lenovo charger and the Yoga 3 Pro. When a regular USB cord is plugged into either the charger or the Yoga 3 Pro, it makes a regular USB connection.

Can I charge the Yoga 3 Pro with any USB charger?

No. The Yoga 3 Pro requires 2A at 20V, which is what the provided 40W Lenovo AC adapter supplies.

Can I charge a USB device with the Yoga 3 Pro AC adapter?

Absolutely. In addition to 2A at 20, the Yoga 3 Pro AC adapter supplies 2A at 5.2V (10.4W), enough to charge a phone or tablet. Works for iPad.

Where can I buy spare AC adapters and cords?

AC adapters with cords are sold in the accessories section of the Lenovo store.

Where do I find the part numbers for the AC adapter and cord?

Look for AC Adapters In the PDF Yoga 3 Pro Hardware Maintenance Manual.

What are the USB specs of the Yoga 3 charging port?

It's a USB 2.0 port. It provides enough power to charge an iPhone, but not enough to charge an iPad. If you want to charge an iPad, try the USB 3.0 port on the right of the Yoga 3 Pro.

I have a Inspiron 15 3541 touch screen and "misplaced" my power cord and adapter. I'm using a Dell adapter from a different computer, but when I turned on my laptop, I get a message requiring a system or admin password even before it boots up. Is this because of the different adapter? How many pins did my adapter have? What problems does a different adapter create?

A:Power adapter pins

The password that is showing up before your computer boots sounds like there is a BIOS password set on the computer.  Unfortunately if you don't remember that password then you are probably stuck.  You can probably go online and search and see if there is a way to reset BIOS on the laptop and get it to default and remove the password that is set on it.  If there is a hard drive password though then the only way to remove that if you forgot it is to install a new hard drive as the password will follow the drive, not the computer.
Your power supply should have only 1 pin.  Dell used the same adapter for their computers for a while, they come in different wattage though and if you use an adapter that is too low then it may not be able to charge the battery while you use it or at all.  If the plug fits and it is a Dell charger you should be okay to at least get the computer up and running.  If it is a low wattage charger and the setting is set in BIOS (usually is by default) you'll get a message from your computer telling you that the charger isn't powerful enough to charge the battery while in use.

I have a Precision 7510 updated with the latest Bios and drivers. Today my TB15 arrived. I haven't tested connecting a monitor to it yet only a network cable and USB 3.0 stick - this worked fine.
I also tried starting the laptop from the button on the TB15 which also works fine.
However on startup I receive an error message:
"Alert! You have attached an undersized 130W power adapter to you system, which is less than the recommended 180W power adapter" ... message carries on a bit.
Now the thing is both the TB15 power adapter and 7510 power adapter are the same (identical part number) and  are shown to be 180W output.
What's the problem here and what do I need to do ?

At same time purchased 12V power adapter.
The adapter was shipped separately.  SKU 469-4546.  The power plug did not fit computer.
It is too fat.  Spent 4 hours with tech support and they told me the wrong part was shipped.
They said they would send a replacement.  10 days later I get a package with an HDMI cable in it.
Call support back, was told they would just issue me a credit and I can purchase one online.
I was told I needed part.  450-AAYR.  Web page for that part lists the 7202 as compatible.
It arrived yesterday.  Still doesn't fit.  I am returning it as well.
What is required to get the correct part?

I have a 90w power adapter from an older notebook that will work with my HP DV5-1015nr. I transport my notebook between home and office. I'd like to utilize the older power brick, so that I won't need to transport a power brick back and forth. The tips on both adapters, of course, are of a different diameter.      My multi-tester identifies that the tip is hot for both adapters. The problem I have is that the older power brick has two wires: core wire (+) and shield (-), and the newer power adapter has three wires: shield that is connected to the core of tip (+), black that is connected to outer part of cylindrical shaft that must be the ground, and white connected to inner part of cylindrical shaft (also negative?). So do the black and white wires on the newer adapter need to be soldered to the shield on the older one?

A:Wiring for Power adapter?

Just a guess, since it is 90watt, they may have run the extra wire to carry the load, shield is always much larger than center tip wire. Did you measure voltage and ploarity of all three connections with the brick plugged in? Tip is always + and ouside is always - on a HP, not sure what the third is, see if there is any voltage on it, It could also be some sort of sensor wire for the charging system on the mobo. Better to buy another adapter than smoke the motherboard on the lappy taking a chance. If you want to chance it just connect the two wires that are on the center and outside. Leave the 3rd odd one unconnected. probably can be found used for cheap.

Hi everyone.

I know that this is not really entirely related to a Windows 7 computer and especially to these forums, but I really need some advice on this and it would be great if anyone who has experience in voltage, amps and safety for laptop power adapters would be perfect.

My friend has just traveled down to my house for a week but has foolishly forgot his plug for the power socket on his power adapter. He uses this for his computer. Again unrelated becuase it is an Apple 45W MagSafe2 adapter.

So I was wondering if he could simply use a cord like this one below to plug into the adapter?
The black cord is 2.5A 250V~

The adapter is 100-240V~ 1A

These are both for input.

Any help would be greatly appreciated .

A:Power Adapter Problem

That white 'thing' appears to be for an Apple Macintosh MacBook/MacBook Pro [I have a MacBook Pro] and you might not be able use the black cord due to fit, the V-shaped notch in the black plug would have to let it be inserted. But it probably won't hurt to try as it's still a 110/120Volt source.

The MacBook power adapter also came with a piece that replaced that cord and has the prongs to plug directly into a wall socket/extension cord, maybe it's in his Notebook bag.

I have a 20 pin motherboard but the power supply I have available has a 24 pin connector. I've read that you can simply plug them together by offsetting the 24 pin one but so far I don't see that working at all (and 'never the twain shall meet', so to speak). I've found adapters but they all say something akin to

'allows you to connect your existing 20 pin power supply to your new 24-pin compatible motherboard'

You can use it the other way around, correct?

thanks

A:20 to 24 pin power supply adapter

Some mainboard connectors are 20+4 pins where the 4 pins unsnap from the 20 pins for use with boards with a 20 pin connector. If your power supply doesn't have that feature you would use an adapter such as this.

A:Power adapter center pin

Sounds like the Centre pin has broken away and lodged itself in the plug. I cannot tell you which is positive and which is negative with regards to the rings on the plug. Because different Manufacturers use different combinations and with that different Voltages too. Generally speaking the outside piece is the male end and the receiving plug is the female -go figure-

Though I had posted this previously, but cannot find it anywhere!

Got an Altec Lansing Multimedia Computer Speaker System ACS41. Apparently they were used on a Gateway 2000 PC.
However, the power adapter was lost.
The speakers do not have any electrical specs on them regarding voltage, amps, and polarity.

Anyone have a similar set of speakers, or,
know of any way this type of info can be found out, in order to get the right power adapter for them. Do not care to fry them with an overkill. The speakers probably came with PCs running Windows 98SE, or Windows Millennium.

Prefer not to go to Radio Shack, they normally are rather expensive, and the people who own this do not want to go that route.

This is a recent problem - a previous adapter broke and now subsequent adapters use 100% CPU and sloooow my laptop.

It's an hp 6720s 13 months old, XP Home, HP 65W power adapter.

Laptop running fine on battery only. Laptop runs fine when battery removed and power adapter is connected. Laptop does not run fine when battery and power adapter connected - 100% CPU.

Also, the charge indicator light no longer works and the power icon does not show that the battery is charging, although it is.

I've updated the BIOS, restored factory power settings and tested the power adapter during startup and have the same prob with the CPU usage.

What could cause the power adapter to use 100% CPU? Please let me know if you need more info, cheers.

My neighbour was given a second-hand computer and asked for my help setting it up.

It is a Dell Optiplex 755 running Win7.

Currently installed graphics is NVidia Quadro FX 3500.

I looked up the service tag and this is not the original card (Original was ATI HD2400XT).

The issue I have is that the FX3500 is an 80W card, with the PCI-E slot having a max of 75W. On booting I get low power warnings from the NVidia card.

The card has a 6 pin PCI-E connection available for the additional power, but the PSU has no PCI-E power cable.

The only free power cables from the PSU are a couple of 15pin SATA cables. I have seen adapter cables for 15pin SATA to 6 pin PCI-E. Are these any good for my situation?

If not, what are the alternatives? New PSU? Different GFX card?

A:"Wireless PC card" adapter? USB or External type ll slot or ANYTHING

Not sure if I am understanding your right or not....

But would something like THIS do the trick?

It'll give you a type II PCMCIA slot in the back of your computer.

What are your thoughts on this little thingamahjig?

Before officially launching its Intel 6 Series chipset-based motherboards, EVGA has decided to introduce the Power Boost, a little internal adapter that will provide more watts to your PCI-Express bus and thus improve overall system stability.

A:EVGA adapter provides more power to your PCIe bus

I'm not sure. I had thought that was what the power connectors on the PCI-E devices (ex: graphics card) were for.

I can also see someone possibly frying their motherboard if this adapter was connected incorrectly in the PCI-E slot.

Hi All, I am getting a very strange issue with my Lenovo SL 510. When i plug in charging while laptop is on it starts disconnecting power adapter every cople of seconds or some time is 5 second (no consistent behaviour).. i thought it could be my power adapter that is misbehaving. I removed battery and started laptop with ac adapter on. it worked fine no issues at all.  if i turn off laptop and put it under charging it get's fully charged and battery also lasts for couple of hours. so no issue in charging while laptop is turned off.. so that rules out possibility of issues with adapter. The issue is only with laptop  charging when it's turned on. it keeps disconnecting. it is really very annoying as get to hear beep sound Similar to hospital sound :-)

Hi -

First post for me - but what a helpful site!

I have a Linksys WRT54GX, ver. 2, wireless G router to which I have lost the ac power adapter. The manual lists it as a 12 volt DC 1 amp (12VDC 1 A).

I have been to Radio Shack, Best Buy, and numerous electronic outlets, as well as exhaustive searches on the net, as well as contacting Linksys directly (they will not sell one separate! Imagine that for tech support!).

You guessed it - I cannot find one. I even went to my pack rat brother who probably has beat Noah and has collected at least one, if not two of everything on Earth - just in case, as he says!

Anyone have any idea where I can get one of these things?

The ones I have found are 12VDC but .5a, 1.something amps, but none are 1 amp.

Anything anyone can chime in on would be appreciated.

(No there is no USB connection on the router to draw power from the CPU, either! Darn!)

Thanks

Noel in Northern NY!

I have recently rescued a 15 inch viewsonic lcd monitor from being trashed at my work. I did not find the ac adapter for it and would like to use one of my old PSU's to run it. Since the power requirements for the monitor are 12.0V 3Amp, I assume I can just use the 12.0V rail on a standard PSU and attach a tip to it (which I have from a broken universal wall-wort). Will this work? Can't I use any power supply/ac adapter that is capable of supplying 3Amps or more of current as long as it is 12.0V? Thanks in advance.

BTW...I did try a duracell battery charger ac adapter that ran at 12.0V and 2.5A for a short period (as to not damage the ac adapter) and found that the monitor works fine (just has a little fraying on the VGA cable). So I know it is worth converting a supply for it.

A:Use a Comp Power Supply as an ac adapter?

A 12-volt supply capable of 3 amps or more is all you need. Just be sure the polarity is right.

I have a 12-port network switch in my shop that's been running off a 5-volt leg of an old computer power supply for several years. At the time, the manufacturer wanted as much for the power supply as I paid for the entire switch and power supply the year before. Old computer power supplies are plentiful around here.

Hi,

I bought a Linksys WRT160n v3 wireless router sometime back. I had considerable trouble in just turning it on. There is an FAQ article by CISCO which says that you have to first plug in the adapter in a power outlet and ONLY afterwards plug the other end into the wireless router. I tried that; it works most of the time (>90%) but not always!! The wireless router turns on only by hit and trial in 10% of the cases.

Adding to my woes is that there was a power cut yesterday and after that I am unable to power on this wireless router at all. I have been fiddling with it for hours but with no luck. Is the wireless router dead? Is there anything that I can do to verify the adapter/ router's sanity?

Is anyone facing similar problem?

I made a service call today to set up a new Dell workstation. It had no PATA drives, only SATA, and no 4-pin molex connectors on the power supply. We need to connect his 500-Gigabyte PATA (aka old IDE) disk. I have already installed an IDE (PATA) controller.

I cannot find a power adapter that will take me from the new SATA power supply to a 4-pin molex.

Anyone know where I might find one?

Years back, being cheaper than external drives I had bought an internal drive as a backup. I also bought an USB to IDE/SATA kit in order to make the backup with. Well the kit seemed to be problematic and so I scrapped it and bought another one only to find the same problem.
it then occurred to me that perhaps the problem is that though the kit has a power supply the HD did not have power going to it--it only attached to the 2 SATA parts.
So I was wondering, how do I get power to it? What is the adapter for such a thing called and does it exist?
See attached photo to see my HD. The pins are not those fat ones but small ones
thanks

A:Internal HD power adapter for external use.

The two connectors on the right are power, far right , SATA, center.
The connector you have marked power is not power.

On some drives a connector for jumpers is in that position.

What model drive are you using?

Seeing as my PSU is limited in the cable department i had to purchase a 4 pin to 8 pin adapter to power my PC.

Do i have to connect both the 4 pin and molex cable's to it or is it ok just connecting the molex cable like i have done?.

Hello everyone, I purchased Lenovo Yoga 900 Ideapad and I am currently using it in India. The power adapter seems to have gone bad and I wasn't able to charge the laptop with the given adapter.  Since the laptop is under warranty, I contacted the warranty help line only to know that I need to take the laptop to the service center. At a service center, no one really knew how the USB 3.0 charging port works and couldn't check whether the cable was short or the adapter had gone bad. Anyhow, they decided to replace it under warranty but again, they weren't sure when and if the replacement would arrive (as it depends on the inventory levels with Lenovo India).  An exclusive Lenovo shop then offered me an original Lenovo power adapter with USB 3.0 charging at USD 70 but only when it got delivered, I see that it is 40W and not 65W like the original one I had.  65W adapter - the USB 3.0 connecter (one which connects the laptop) is orange. The wall adapter doesn't heat up while laptop is charging.40W adapter - the USB 3.0 connecter is yellow. The wall adapter heats up quite a lot while the laptop is charging.  The Lenovo store representative has assured me that this is the right adapter but somehow I am not convinced.  Can the community throw some light on this:- Is it safe to use a 40W adapter for a 65W specification?- Is there any way I can get the adapter replaced by Lenovo US (I can ship the faulty adapter to US)?- I... I need a new AC power adapter for my monitors. I have three Acer S243HL LED monitors, and the power adapters basically exploded a few months ago (I heard a loud pop, followed by the monitor just turned off). I tested it with a working power adapter (the one I'm using now for my only functional monitor), and the monitor itself is fine. The power adapter is not.

Anyways, to prevent this happening in the future, could someone recommend to me a high quality power adapter which won't short out on me?

The power adapter that I'm using looks like this

A:Looking for a high quality AC power adapter

I think there is no such thing as a high end power adapter, you could buy one with goldplated pins and from a quality brand, but the thing is not to let them get very hot and take good care of them, apart from that i dont know any

I bought a refurbhsed Pavillion 17-G126DS.  I charged the notebook upon delivery.  The charging light on the computer by the AC adapter input was red when I first plugged it in, then turned white - assuming the battery is fully charged.  I unplugged the AC adapter and turned the computer on.  It worked fine for about an hour.  Then, the computer turned off.  Nothing.  No light on the power on button, nothing.  I plugged the AC adapter on, thinking the battery was old, tried to run the laptop off of AC power, and nothing happened.  I have run the diagnostic on the battery (PASSED) and the adapter (PASSED).  Just today, I tried it again.  The battery has been charging, the white light is on, turned on the computer, and, when plugging in the adapter, the computer turned off and the battery light shows red.  The computer will not turn on. Should I get a new  AC adapter? Thanks! Susan

A:B590 - Power adapter, Use in New Zealand?

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

According to the specifications listed on page #8 of your model's User Guide, your power adapter is a dual voltage adapter that will handle a voltage input of 100 to 240 Volts AC.  Since New Zealand's power standard is 230 volts,  all you will need is the plug adapter for the wall socket and you are good to go.
