Yesterday I installed vista on my laptop which previous ran XP.
In XP I had an icon in my tool bar, as well as an icon in the control panel where I could disable my touchpad. However since moving Vista, it no longer shows up, so I cant turn the damn thing off. Ive been into system devices, and all that shows up is the mouse, it doesnt even recognise I have a touchpad device, nor does it show up in the bios before loading windows, so I cant disable it. anywhere.
How can I turn this damn thing off? I hate it. Ive tried downloading the drivers for it to see if that brings it up, but after installing them there was no change.
Any ideas?

I want to turn OFF the touchpad on my laptop. I can't find where to do that. Ther are 3 drivers in devices and disabling one at at time, one of them can get the USB wireless mouse to stop but not the touchpad.
Where is that done? Used to be with the control panel mouse but I don't see it.

Normally there is a button on your laptop keyboard to turn it off. And if there is, a drawing of a touchpad is going to be on that key.
Such as FN + Y or SHIFT + 6.

Hi, You could try the following option. Open windows Control Panel and in the top right, next to View by: select 'Large Icons'.  From the new layout, select the Mouse entry and then select 'ClickPad Settings' tab. Enter a checkmark against 'Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached' - see the image below - then click Apply and Ok to save the change.  Regards, DP-K

At some point in the past couple of weeks I did disk clean up and a defrag of my computer. On the same  day windows did an update. Ever since then my Touchpad has been on and I can't uninstall the drivers. When it does I get message in red saying I can't. I have an Inspiron 17 7737 with windows ten. Help.

A:Touchpad won't turn off

Try pressing FN and F3 together and see if that disables the touch pad.  If there is a touch pad icon on the right of the task bar right click it and choose touch pad properties.  There may be a green button that you can use to turn off the touch pad.
From your post you mentioned that you have tried reinstalling the drivers themselves, but if not you can download the windows 10 touch pad drivers here.
If the problem continues you may want to try system restore to a restore point saved before the problem.  here is more information on system restore.
Please let me know if the problem continues.

I would like to know how to quickly and temporarily disable and re-enable my Synaptics touchpad. I should be up to date with drivers and OS updates since I use the HP support assistant in addition to WIndows 10 updates. My older i5 HP Pavilion laptop (12.1") has a feature to tap on a dot on the touchpad to do this, and a light comes on to indicate it is disabled. Another tap or two and it is re-enabled. This is not a feature on my larger (this one) laptop. I don't see any setting in the Synaptics driver to have a quick way to do this. Just to be clear, I am not looking for a way to enable/disable the touchpad when using an external mouse. I've tried 3rd party software to create a delay on the touchpad when I'm tyoing but it does not work well for me (Laptop Assistant). I know some Synaptics drivers do have a spot you can set up on the corner of the touchpad to do what I want but it's not apparently available on the Windows 10 driver. Hopefully someone here has found a solution and can share it here. Thanks!!!Donald

I bought a E520. I am not liking the touchpad on this thing. It hangs up and does not respond a lot of times. The biggest thing that irks me is that my screen will zoom in and out when I run my finger along the touchpad or when tapping it. I know you can use the "pinch" with two fingers to zoom in and out but mine will zoom with just a tap of one finger. Someone must know how to disable the zoom feature. Can you describe in detail to me how to do that? I called Lenovo support about it and the guy said it might be a software or hardware problem and told me to take it into a repair facility. There must be a way in settings to turn that off. I just want the touchpad to work normally, as in move the cursor around.. thats it, nothing more. Can someone help me with this??

Hello,

I have a Dell Latitude D630 laptop that has issues. Sometimes the touchpad works, and sometimes it doesn't. I've noticed when it doesn't work, the icon in the tray has disappeared or never booted up to begin with. Sometimes it boots up and sometimes it just doesn't even boot up to the tray at all. And at other times, it does.
(Along with this, maybe it's just a coincidence, but I've been working on this for days and days but when the touchpad doesn't work, the keyboard acts up too!) This might have nothing to do with it at all.

I've done a complete reformat of the hard drive, installed Win XP Professional, reinstalled drivers over and over. Been to the Dell website and have all the newest drivers.
When I reinstall the touchpad drivers, it does work once again, but this seems to be short lived.
The laptop is 4 years old...seems strong otherwise, can handle multiple tasks fairly well, has a dual core installed.
I can't figure it out.
Can anyone help?

Thank you!!
Pam

A:Turn on/off touchpad with hotkey for Dell XPS 13 (XPS L322X)

I have a Dell XPS 13 and this has bugged me for a year. I've finally fixed it though, via a registry command line:
To turn the trackpad off, run
reg add "HKCU\Software\Cypress TrackPad Driver\Device Select" /v EnableTrackPad /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
To turn the trackpad on, run
reg add "HKCU\Software\Cypress TrackPad Driver\Device Select" /v EnableTrackPad /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
Note that turning the trackpad off shows a slight delay in it taking effect.
To automate these commands, save each command to a batch file, e.g. turnoff.bat, turnon.bat, then you can run them from either the windows run command (Window key + start typing path to the bat file) or via a short-cut app, like slickrun.

Do you know if there is a resolution to this?

We just got a Dell XPS-15z, and, we have questions about scrolling on the Cypress touchpad using the Cypress drivers.

When scrolling down (either one finger or 2 fingers), when you hit the bottom of the touchpad, is there any way for the scrolling to continue without your having to lift your finger(s) back to the top of the touchpad? On other Dell laptops, I have Chiral motion, or the scrolling continues so long as your finger is at the bottom of the touchpad? I tried enabling the "Continued Motion" option just in case that was what did it, but that did not seem to work.

Which brings up another question re what "Continued Motion" does.

Also, is there any manual/help document for this driver either on the internet, or in the software itself?

I looked on the forum and on the internet, and couldn't find any answers.

TIA.

Haven't updated your laptop's trackpad driver lately? Then you may well want to consider doing so, at least if your laptop is equipped with a Synaptics trackpad. As a user on the Hardware Zone forums discovered, the latest Synaptics driver seems to enable multitouch gestures on older laptops that didn't previously support them, including two-finger scrolling, and three-finger click. What's more, while the drivers themselves come from HP, they should work just fine on other laptops with a Synaptics trackpad. Hit up the link below to try it out for yourself.

Hello Everyone,

My problem started after updating windows 8.1 to windows 10, of course!
First the touchpad just stopped working, for no reason.

My solution was to uninstall the drive and restart the laptop. And from time to time I had to do this proceed. Two weeks ago windows updated, and the touchpad issue's gone. . Unfortunately, another one appeared.

The feature "mousekey", which is turn it on at ease access to use the numeric keys to use them as a mouse, It's turning itself on. And doesn't matter how many times I turn it off, few seconds and it's on again.

I've tried uninstalling the drive, which after windows the last updating was "ELAN".

Then I replaced by the Toshiba drivers, which is "Synaptic", and uninstalled the drives ,the problem is the same. Because of that, I can't use my numeric key, which is annoying!! If anyone can come up with something I will be grateful.

Hello,

#1 For some reason my touchpad on my HP 15 (2015 model with 8.1, now upgraded to Windows 10 1511) freezes. I hate that when it happens, you cant use it for 20 or 30 seconds or so. I close my lid and open it back up and it works normal, but then after a little bit it starts doing it again. My driver is up to date, I think it maybe Synaptics? If I need to give more info, please say!

#2: When I scroll on my touchpad up words it opens the start menu every so often when I am scrolling a lot, but when I didn't even open or even get near it or press Windows key. What is causing this? I hate it when it does this and screws up my readings then it stops scrolling and focuses more on the start menu then I have to click out of the menu and go back to what ever I was doing.

Thanks!

Recently i had to reinstall windows XP HOME on this IBM Touchpad T30 laptop.
I somehow cant seem to install the networkcontroller / PCI-modem drivers.
With a cable the internet works fine (Duh, its windows XP ..) but with wireless it doesnt work.
I cant even find wireless in the network connections now T_T

I found this post by jaguirre77 on http://forums.techguy.org/networking/821450-ibm-thinkpad-t30-wireless-adapter.html

Seeing his question wasnt completely answered because information was missing, i figured I'd repost it with all the needed information

So, what have i done:
All chipset drivers are installed.
I went to Lenovo website and searched for T30 network drivers.
I found some but they didnt recognize it through hardware -> properties -> drivers -> adjust driver -> select location blablabla you know the drill..

so I was wondering if you could tell me what drivers i would need with the added information below.

Touchpad was fine until today where in most windows when i try to scroll the pointer will either jump towards the top left part of the screen, or scroll then when i touch the pad again then it will jump.

Its not the case for all windows. Firefox works normal, same with device manager. But for chrome, normal folder windows and control panel it always does this. The further away the pointer is already from the top left of the screen the futher it will jump.

Im using Vista 32bit SP2, on an acer 6935g. I've tried reinstalling the touchpad driver. I have been messing a bit with my laptop today, just reinstalling gpu driver, changing dpi settings and trying to work out why some games aren't as running as good as they should. But nothing that should of affected the touchpad and i've scanned my laptop with a few scanners and nothings come up.

Any ideas? thanks

Okay. I see lots of comment about how this is a solved problem. It is NOT SOLVED. My touchpad does NOT have an enable/disable button on it.

I am running Win 8 on a new (last Xmas) HP Envy laptop. Until a few weeks ago, I could very sweetly disable the touchpad whenever there was a mouse detected by the system. it worked great. Sometime in April or May, a standard system "upgrade" took that away. I keep my system updated with current drivers, and OS updates. I now regret that because this WAS working until an upgrade broke it. There USED to be an option in the Control Panel for the touchpad saying "disable touchpad when mouse connected"--and that has now disappeared. (So much for "new and improved"!)

NOW...yes, I can go to the control panel. Yes, I can go to Pointing device properties. And yes, I can disable the touchpad. BUT IT DOES NOT STAY DISABLED. If the system goes to sleep from inactivity...the touchpad re-enables itself. If I'm working on the system for 20 or 30 minutes, the touchpad re-enables itself. If I re-boot the system...the touchpad re-enables itself. I have disabled all the gestures on the touchpad, but it won't let me disable buttons. This is driving me crazy.

HOW DO I PERMANENTLY GET THIS FRIGGIN' SYSTEM TO AUTOMATICALLY DISABLE THE TOUCHPAD IF THERE IS A MOUSE CONNECTED???

Over and over again, on HP forums, Synaptics forums, tech forums, I see the tech "experts" telling me this is a "solved&quo... Read more

Hello,

The touchpad on my eee 1005HA hasn't worked for awhile. At one point, I had a message that there was a change in the registry. I was having a few other issues also. This was awhile back and a tech savvy friend walked me through fixing those issues and restoring to a previous point. All has been fine since then, except for the touchpad. I think I may need to download a driver, but I want to make sure to use a safe source. Suggestions?

Thanks for all of the information out here.

I'm having a small issue with windows vista that really isn't urgent but would be nice to solve. When i first bought by dell inspiron 1505 back near christmas it was running xp and had a nifty litte feature that let me modify my touchpad. It would let me change some settings such as tapping in the corners to perform different tasks such as back, forward, minimize, etc. Since i installed Windows vista I have not been able to use these features or even scroll by sliding my finger along the side and bottom of the pad. It's nothing big but it was convientent and wouldn't mind fixing it if you could. Thanks

A:[SOLVED] touchpad issues

Hi,
I will make a suggestion to try and help you. When you upgraded to Vista did you go to the dell website and download the upgraded drivers for Vista? You may want to try this, Vista has different drivers than XP. If you could supply your service tag it will help in locating the variuos drivers.
Thanks,
Bill

I've got a Dell D630 and when I had XP, I downloaded the Dell Touchpad Driver to gain touchpad scrolling functionality. Now that I've upgraded to Windows 7, the driver page opens as usual, but I can no longer select the "Touchpad Settings" or "Scrolling Settings" options ("External Mouse" and "Device Select" open just fine). Is there another driver out there I should be using? Thanks!

I have a Sony Viao VGN-SZ61WN/C. I couldn't stand Vista, especially Windows Mail, so i have "downgraded" to XP Home. All that is fine and I have all the relevant drivers-- I think! BUT, when I was using Vista, I was able to use an external mouse and disable the touchpad. Now however, I can't find any way of disabling it, resulting in text jumping all over the place whenever I accidentally brush it. I have asked Sony tech support and they have no answer. There is no button on the keyboard.
I have been into Device Manager and tried just uninstalling each of the pointing devices shown there in turn, to no avail.
2 devices are shown:
PS/2 Compatible Mouse
HID-compliant Mouse

If I uninstall the driver of the PS/2 Compatible mouse, the external mouse stops working.
If I uninstall the HID-compatible mouse, the same thing happens—the external mouse stops working. There is nothing there about a touchpad.
Problem is, this Viao had a link in Vista to Sony for configuring it. It is no longer there in XP.
Is there ANYTHING I can do, as I hate touchpads and want to use a mouse but this is driving me crazy, even if I am REALLY careful!
Help please—nice techy people!

I have Windows 7. The touchpad was working fine until I took my computer in for repair--removal of viruses for unrelated problem.
When I got it back the touchpad doesn't work right and the repair people said it was a hardware problem. Seems too coincidental that it worked before I took it too them.
When I put my finger on the touchpad and try to move the cursor on the screen a small distance it flies across the screen to the far side. Previously I had Windows Vista on this computer which has a command that will speed move your cursor and it shows it's doing so by a symbol. The symbol is an arrow up above a down mark above an arrow down.
My touchpad is moving crazy. If I move the cursor a little to fill in a box, it keeps flying all over the screen as I try to move it to the spot. I can't live with a computer that does this.
Is there any solution for this? If it's a hardware problem, can a new touchpad be installed? If I can't get this fixed, I'm going to have to buy a new computer.

I need a "good' Alps touch pad driver.
Something with similar options such as synaptics....preferably swipe and coast scrolling. All of the Alp drivers I have tried have jumpy scrolling ...jumping a few lines at a time rather than matching actual finger movement.
Since Alps touchpads seem to be gaining popularity with the manufacturers,I am hoping a good driver now exists.

I have found one that didnt jump a few lines{precision scrolling} at the dell site but it didnt have continued scrolling...meaning when your finger reached the bottom corner, scrolling stopped rather than continued until lifted or moved back up.
I would settle for continued scrolling without the jumping of lines{precision scrolling}....but opt for the coasting feature.....So in a nutshell I need precision scrolling..with continued and or coasting scroll options.

If anyone has a good alps driver on their laptop or knows of a good Alps touchpad driver..I need the model number for the unit or the version number of the driver

Hi,
I'm using a laptop that was originally running Vista but was upgraded to Windows 7. I have a problem that is typical with that upgrade in that Windows 7 does not make available the proper drivers for the touch pad and the result is that the cursor has a mind of it's own when typing. They typical patch is to use a software like touch freeze but that is a very mediocre fix.

Does anyone know if an upgrade to Windows 10 will fix the touch pad problem?

Thanks, Jon

I've spent hours and hours searching the web, including techsupportguy, but I cannot find any clue that leads me to an answer. I would love some help!!
My vanilla-flavour Gateway laptop (XP) works perfectly - until I print more than 1 or two pages on the HP All-in-one. Some time during the printing process the touchpad freezes; well, almost - the cursor moves a mm or two and bounces back to almost where it came from. I have waited and waited for it to cure itself but it never does. The only solution is to close and restart.

I have experimented by keeping the printer turned off and simply letting the OS spool waiting for the printer. All is fine until I turn the printer on - it prints and then the cursor freezes again. I can normally print one page OK, and after a while print another. Sometimes the problem occurs with just one page, so I suspect that the problem is caused by the amount of data going to the printer rather than the number of pages.

A:Solved: touchpad freezes after printing

I should also have said the following: when the cursor freezes the tray icon for the touchpad constantly shows that the touchpad is being touched even though it isn't. I am just not technical enough to begin to guess how printing can interfere with (to me) a seemingly unconnected peripheral.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L300 laptop, about 2 years old. I use an external USB wireless mouse, and have the touchpad disabled. I am running Windows 7 32 bit.

My issue is that even with the touchpad disabled, it seems like it's still active. If I rest my hands when typing, suddenly I switch to another open window. Very aggravating when doing email.

Is there some way to *really* disable the touchpad? Can I uninstall it? Or will it just auto-detect itself when I restart?

Second, I am wondering if this is related to an upgrade of the driver. I can't remember if it was doing this before I updated the driver for the Synaptics touchpad or not. To downgrade the driver, do I just use the device manager or is it best to uninstall it, and then install the previous version?

Thanks!

A:[SOLVED] Disable touchpad w/ external mouse

Usually there is a touchpad icon in the lower right corner of the Taskbar. You might find a setting there to disable the touchpad. Some laptops have an on/off button just above the touchpad, but you can accidentally turn it on.

You could also disable the touchpad in Hardware Manager. This is a more "permanent" solution, because you would have to go back into Hardware Manager in order to re-enable it.

ARGH! Constantly while typing I brush against it and the cursor moves on me and I end up typing ... who knows where on the screen! In XP I could go in and disable the touchpad, and then re-enable it. Unfortunately, in Vista, when I go to CP->Mouse->Hardware and select the device properties on the "PS/2 Compatible Mouse" (aka the touchpad) the "Disable" button is disabled (how ironically inconvenient)

90% of the time I just want to use my mouse since I'm at a table. But occasionally I do want to be able to turn on the touchpad to use it. So I don't want to uninstall it through Device Manager. I just want to disable it.

Any thoughts. Seriously, why would they disable that button, when you could do it in XP. ARGH! Where was the QA team on this one?

Thanks all.

Like many others I am unable to turn off or disable my touchpad on my advent 6311. I always thought it was my ham fisted approach to the keyboard and for that reason I use a separate keyboard and mouse.

I've followed all the tips but nothing works. I can get into my device manager and find the appropriate mouse that I want to disable. Sadly, the disable key is always greyed out.

I have the option to uninstall which sounds drastic but it was worth a try. Taking this option always requires a restart and the first thing that happens is that the mouse gets reinstalled during the restart.

I spot clues about fixing it in bios which perhaps will result in me doing more damage. Do I live with it? Or, is there a work round?

my IBM T41 Thinkpad hard drive died and I replaced it, so I lost all the drivers and special software IBM put on it. Once I installed XP I tried to disable the double tap touchpad but XP didnt have a driver so I installed the Lenovo UltraNav. With it I can have full control over the touchpad, except that it does not allow me to disable the double tap. the only tapping options are 'tap and drag' and 'tap zones'. Before the hard drive crashed I had disabled the double tap so I know it is possible. Any ideas? I hate the double tap and it ought to be easy to disable.

I have recently bought a new Lenovo Z500 laptop with Windows 8.

The touchpad is large which I like but it has a whole host of annoying features swipes and swopes and sweeps and whatever. When I place two of my fingers on the touchpad and move them, sometimes the feature I am using zooms in or out. When I swoop my finger from the far edge of the touchpad towards the middle it causes new Windows 8 display screens to appear at the screen edges etc.

How do I disable all these annoying new features while keeping the basic functionality of the touchpad? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Recently my laptops volume touchpad button wont work. When the volume is turned on, the button is suppose to turn white, but it stays red. The tab on the taskbar says the volume is on, but nothing can be heard. I tried to check if the computer wasn't detecting the sound card, but it said the sound card was working. I tried scearching through some posts but no one seems to have this particular problem. Please help.

I'm running a Vista HP Pavilion dv4 Notebook PC.

Hi, a few months ago I called dell to have something on my computer fixed (I don't remember what it actually was). The dell rep remotely took over the computer and cleared out a bunch of the programs from startup in various locations. Since then I have not been able to use the scroll and multi-touch features on my mousepad. I can't find where to turn this back on and re-installing the driver has not helped.

I would appreciate any help you guys can give.

Thanks, Rob

Could someone let me know how to eliminate the "tap" feature on my laptop's (Dell Inspiron 1150) touchpad? I was once able to remove it, but I reinstalled XP and drivers. Now, I can't find in Control Panel's "mouse" or in Device Manager or elsewhere the controlling features that allowed me before to remove the "tap", which I find too sensitive.

There must be a driver for it that I need to download in order to control the touchpad features.
