Crash has caused the master harddrive to no longer be recognized in bios.

Q: Crash has caused the master harddrive to no longer be recognized in bios.

I haven't had these SSD's very long, maybe a year. I have a 60gb ssd as the master and a slower 120gb ssd as the slave, Windows 7. I left my pc idle for around 15 minutes or so, only to return and find that "A disk read error occurred". Upon restarting it said the same thing again. I've had this problem with past pc's (xp, first time for 7) and usually running repair with the OS disk fixed it.

However this time even with the disc in it gave me the same message. Going in the BIOS I noticed that the master SSD did not show up in the boot order, but it still shows up as being connected. There was an option to "override" the boot order for the master, doing that I can get across the message and actually boot up the OS. After having done so I ran chkdsk but it came up clean.

I'm no computer expert and know just enough to try and keep everything working to the best of my knowledge but this has me a little confused.

If someone could help me set it back up to where I don't have to override my main harddrive on startup every time I want to get on the pc I would really appreciate it.

Hi everyone,
I have a seagate hd, it's set to single/master, it's the only harddrive in the machine, but my bios doesn't seem to see it.
I'm totaly stuck! if anyone every had this problem, i'd appreciat any help!

A:Harddrive not recognized by bios

First thing to do check to see is the ide cable is bad try another if so, make sure your hard drive is attached to the master not the slave end of the cable, also if you have another hard drive swap that out to see if your seagate HD is good. be patient more is on the way.

My HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop failed on me last summer, well.. the HDD failed, I was unable to access the computer at all, black screen saying failure.

Anyways, I want to use my laptop again so I purchased a brand new Western Digital Blue HDD 320GB from Tigerdirect this afternoon.
I got home, took out the old one, popped the new one in expecting everything to go smoothly.

I plugged in my USB to install Windows 7 on, I get to the page where you choose the partition to install Windows 7 and to come to my surprise, there was nothing there. Instantly my heart fell, I'm like you've gotta be kidding me.. Drove an hour and a half through busy humid traffic to get this...?

I checked the BIOS and it doesn't appear to be there.. I looked at HP's website and I can't find any new BIOS updates.. I'm trying to use "Mini-Tool Partition Wizard" but it's giving me some stupid error saying "ERROR: This bootable CD does not support Windows Server." I have no clue what that means... I've already tried reburning it a few times. I'm ****ing frustrated.

I don't know what to do..

A:Brand New Harddrive not being recognized in BIOS.

Can you try the hard disk on another PC? desktops can use them as well. You can connect it without rebooting too. First data cable then power cable.

Also check that the BIOS didn't disable sata (some do have the option of disabling the SATA controller and/or sata port, some don't, look in the page about hard drive info and try to change the "not installed" field if possible).

For a bootable partition manager I use a trusty linux USB drive, the tools are all packed in PartedMagic bootable disk.

I recently installed an old 10GB harddrive that I got from a friend with nothing on it. It is recognized in the BIOS and in Device Manager but not in My Computer. I installed redhat 9 on it but now I want to reformat it and turn it into a storage drive because I'm about to reformat my 120GB so instead of backing up on lots of cd's, i would like to back up on that 10gig. Ok here goes, Gigabyte have just released there latest BIOS update, which claims to Fix audio noise issue while running ET6 in Win7, now I do not have Win 7 installed on my PC, however I have been having audio issues, my MP3's have been playing "choppy" more so if I am running a backup, doing a virus scan. Other than that most of the time they play smoothly.

Anyways, I thought of the onboard sound working overtime, so I purchased a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio Card, installed it, updated the drivers, started playing an MP3, and then started a system backup.

Well I was very disappointed when the MP3's started to play "choppy", so that's when I headed over to Gigabytes website, and was happy to see a BIOS update, that may fix my sound issues.

I used the Gigabytes Update BIOS program (as I have always done), it downloaded and installed correctly.

Then I rebooted got flashed with BSOD, the PC then restarted, I let it boot up, and was greeted by nothing No system startup, tried booting into safe mode where it just hung.

Now this is where it gets interesting, as I am paranoid about losing data, I have 2 External Hard Drives, and two different Recovery Software installed, 1 is Paragon, the other is Acronis (I also use Vista's backup).

So my laptop is about a year old and aside from having to switch out a bad graphics card about a month ago, it's never had any real problems. This morning, though, I noticed my laptop didn't seem to be booting correctly. It would display the HP logo as always, then show a blinking cursor which just sat there. Normally, my laptop boots in a little under a minute, and that cursor is only onscreen for about 3 seconds. Now, the cursor remains for 2 minutes or so, after which the computer continues booting. Overall boot time is now 3 minutes or more. This last time I restarted it, the screen was totally blank for three minutes, after which the vista logo suddenly popped up followed by my desktop.

The other odd thing is that windows can no longer recognize my DVD/CD drive. It seems the same as always physically, at least as far as I can tell, but windows does not seem to know it's there; it's gone from both My Computer and device manager, and nothing happens when I insert a disc (even though it's set to autoplay.) The drive light still lights up and it still pops out like normal, however. I played a DVD on it just last night with no problems. Earlier that day I had burned a DVD, but that's something I do often and it's never posed any issues; the program I use is ConvertXtoDVD 3. It can't detect the drive either now.

I would assume these problems are connected somehow, since they both started at the same time; but I can't figure out how they're connected. I'm wondering if one cau... Read more

We have a MAXTOR hardrive (6L080M0) on an ML100 and we want to add an extra
SAMSUNG harddrive (HD300LJ).
My first question is whether the HD300LJ is compatible with the ML100 and my
second question is how to make the HD300LJ a slave Harddrive.

A:Slave and Master HardDrive

I can't really answer the compatibility question (my secondary drive has issues with the primary drive from the same manufacturer. Almost the same model, too. But that's another story), but slaving it is easy enough.

On the back of the hard drive, where your cables plug in, there should be a plastic cap (a jumper) on two pins. On the label on the drive, it should have a "jumper settings" diagram. Change the jumpers to the "slave" setting.

One note, though. If your primary drive is set as "master", then there shouldn't be any problems. If it is set to cable select, though, then you might come across an issue. Change the jumper to "cable select" and it should be OK.

Let us know how it goes.

I have a new 40 Gb harddrive installed as a slave. I even have my operating system (win98SE) installed on it. I would like to transfer all the good programs and settings (screen, printer, speakers,go back, etc) to the larger harddrive while leaving all the trash and junk behind. At which point I would reformat the smaller hard drive and use it as storage.
I am a complete ignoramus when it comes to computer language, although I have installed some new memory and a cdrw. so please type slowly. Thanks.

A:new harddrive is slave, wants to be master

If you have the OS installed on it, then you can change the jumpers and then access the other drive moving the files ofer while running it as with little on it, but enough to move over everything right now.

My computer PSU recently blew taking the MOBO along with it so i got a new computer and i attempted to install the harddrive form my old computer as a master and the new computers harddrive as a slave but it failed. When i booted it it displayed the blue screen and said their might be a problem with a new harddrive that i installed so i had to slave the old one. Is their anyway i can make my old one the master and still have the new one as a slave? any help will be much appreciated (both drives are running win xp home if that helps)

A:How do i make a Harddrive master?

The hard drives usually comes with direction, but basically there is a little plastic thin when you have to place in one of the pins where it conects to make it a master or slave. Basically you pull out the plastic peice and put it in the situation where it is consider the master and then your 2nd one to be consider the slave. I wish i had a picture to show you.

Step 1:
Decide which hard drive will be the startup (master) drive. If this drive was the startup drive previously, or if it's a new hard drive, then the master drive designation will already be set.

Step 2:
To change the designation of a new drive to be a slave drive, skip to step 4.

Step 3:
To change the designation of an existing drive to be a slave drive: Turn off the computer, unplug the power cord, remove the drive from its drive bay, and disconnect the drive from its power cord and ribbon cable.

Step 4:
Check the hard drive documentation or the label on the drive itself for master/slave jumper settings.

Step 5:
Find the jumpers on the circuit board of the drive. Jumpers are plastic plugs with metal sleeves that form a circuit between a pair of pins. Jumper locations are labeled on the board with a J followed by a number (such as J20).

Step 6:
Use tweezers or very small pliers to remove or reposition the jumpers to the configuration shown in the documentation or on the disk label.

Hi, my computer is weird in that a couple of months ago, when I first moved my computer to my university residence, it would sometimes not be able to find the IDE master harddrive and I would need to disconnect and reconnect the IDE cable to the motherboard in order to fix it. It didn't bother me that much and the issue went away after a couple of times until now. My computer was operating fine, but then i had a windows explorer error and had to restart my comp, when i restarted it, my computer was missing an IDE master drive from when I checked in BIOS, I tried reconnecting the IDE cables and it still went undetected, any advice?
on another note, i dont know if this is relevant at all but i can access asus express gate to get on the internet and type this post on my computer.

hello everyone!

first of all, my computer is a hp pavilion 8606 which was bought by my dad 4 years ago. The only thing that was replaced was the hard drive and the cd-rw. OS is win98se.

The original 10gb hd was replaced by 40gb seagate hd.
The LG CD-RW was replaced by 52x Cd-Rom
.. Now my friend bought his own computer and he wants me to give him copy of softwares and games. He gave me his hd.

Now, in order to copy my files to his hd.. I have read I have to setup a master and a slave drive. This is my first time to do something like this so I have read every instructions on how to setup 2 hd.

using the IDE connector cable, its one end is connected to my harddrive and its jumper is set as master. Using the same cable, (gray connector-a connector in the middle of the cable) I connected my friend's harddrive and its jumper are removed (as indicated in the hd cover to indicate slave). I connected power cables on the two hd and power on my computer.

As I power up my computer, the display monitor says 'Check power cable...". I didn't touch anything related for the display. Keyboard light up but that's it. It won't boot! There's no beep, no floppy light up. The CD-rom won't boot. The computer just stays like that. I can't even go in the bios.

As I wonder what happened, I removed my friend's hd. I turn the power off then on. The same thing happens! As I panic, I connect reconnect all the cables in the hd and my cd-rom. There&... Read more

Hi everyone im having problems, i have no sound i installed a new harddrive and set it as the master and the second hd as the secondary i can read both hard drives fine but i have no sound at all how do i take the sounddriver from the old hd and transfer it to the new master hd?

thanks if anyone can help.

A:Installed 2nd harddrive as master no sound!

You lost me. When you installed the new master HD, did you do a clean install of Windows, a drive copy, or is the slave drive running the OS? That third thang is all around bad news.

I'd suspect you need to go to the device manager, select the audio device and select 'update driver." Be sure to include windows update in the driver search criteria.

OK, I got another computer from someone and alot of the hardware is newer and better than mine. So, someone told me I can replace the original hard drive in it (20GB) with my hard drive (40GB w/ EZ-BIOS & WINDOWS XP). I take out the original and put mine in and boot it up, and it does recognize it. But windows will not load. I get a message screen that's somewhat like this:
We are sorry but windows could not load up because of possible hardware changes made...

if not that then because of power shortage...

if you don't know what happend then try boot normally

safe mode
safe mode with networking
sofe mode in command prompt

use last working configuration (previous settings that worked.........)

Load windows normally

next try in (count down counter here)

OK, I tried each option but nothing works. My cousin told me to try the bios and set the harddrive to auto, but I found nothing that lets me do that. In the IDE configuration there was just some enable & disable things.

the ide cable going to the CDRW has a middle connecvtion. Can I hook a harddrive to that connection as a slave? I just need to copy and paste some info from there old harddrive to the new one. Can I have the CDRW as the master as it is now and hook a harddrive on that ide for a slave to get the info or do I have to change the cable that is on the harddrive now and put a double one in?

You can attach the old drive to either connection . . and you are on the right track using the secondary channel ( the one with the CD Drive ). Check the jumpers to make sure it is set to Cable Select ( CS ) . . plug in the power and you should be good to go.

I recently obtained an ASUS DVD burner, and attempted to install it. After much trial-and-error, all of my 3 IDE drives work (2 hard drives and the DVD burner), but my primary hard drive, which I run by itself on Channel 0, will not recognize itself as a Master. I can get it to recognize as a Slave, but any time I jumper it to Master, it doesn't even show up in my BIOS. I tried switching drives around, but the best I could come up with is that my Channel 0 will not recognize ANY drive as the master. I could just try recabling my drives, but I'd much rather be able to fix this problem at the source.

ok heres the problem: my main hard drive is 80 gb SATA,and my new drive is the western digital 250 gb SATA drive. so i bought my SATA cable, installed the backup 250 GB drive into slot 1, connected the power and then connected my SATA cable to slot 1. i boot up the computer like normal, but recieve an odd problem: My drive 4 (port PATA 1 PRI IDE slave) and drive 5 (the master, im not 100% sure if 4 is the master or if 5 is) are not detected. i went into the bios, both are turned on and recognized. i disregarded this and turned on my drive 1 to try my new hard drive. when i booted up not only is the new drive not recognized, neither the DVD or CD is either. the only thing showing up is my c drive and floppy drive. i turned the drive 1 off(controllerarallel ATA for drive 1 and 0), disconnected the SATA cable, and tried rebooting again, yet i get the same error message. so before i had tried installing this drive i had no problems, now even after disconnecting the drive my DVD and CD drive wont show up.
The SATA operation is currently set to Raid auto detect/AHCI. the other options are as follows:
Raid auto detect/ATA,
Raid ON,
and Combination. in similar problems i found here people said to change to combination, which is SATA/PATA. does anyone know what to do? im left here not being able to use my new hard drive, and ontop of that my cd and dvd drives!

A:Master/slave drive not recognized

Hi, and welcome to Techspot. Are you using a RAID array? If you are not, or don't know what that means, you should not be running your drives in RAID mode or AHCI mode. Just run them in regular SATA mode.

Here's the scenario:
1) Using a maxtor 160GB HDD which was used previously as 2nd storage HDD
on Win2k installation.
2) Now, Using a bootable CD, when I got to windows installation menu (the
blue screen) with the options of either deleting the previous partition or installing WinXP on the same partition, for some reason that I can't recall, I thought Windows was stuck in a loop. I missed on the bottom of the menu
that said: "F3 to cancel"
3) So, while in the blue screen menu, I manually powered off.
4) From this point and on, on repeated attempts to install either win 2k or xp, in spite of BIOS showing a 163GB HDD capacity, windows installation menu gives the following message:

131070 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR]

5) I have used Partition Magic (it reads total capacity of 156GB) and [email protected] software to delete all previous partitons & totally remove all data from HDD. No luck to get windows menu to see the full capacity of HDD when formatting or creating partitions.
6) I suspect Master Boot Record (MBR) is damaged/corrupted.
Have spent days trying to fix this agonizing problem. Any suggestions as
how to repair/fix MBR or anything else to resolve this problem is very
much appreciated.

A:Master Boot Record (MBR) may be corrupted: only 131 GB recognized

Your hard drive has a partion of 13g which you can format and install using xp or you can delete the partition and create a new size using fdisk. Once completed you need to go to disk management start>run>type in diskmgmt.msc and hit enter.
Create an extended partion in the unallocated space. Now create a logical drive in the new partition and format with ntfs.

(Sorry about the length of this but can someone please tell me why this happened...?)

My hard drive (Western Digital 40GB) disappeared from the BIOS after my computer decided to reboot without warning and without any apparent cause. I swear, no new drivers, hardware, updates, or any changes to the system had occured at all other than me updating my resume in Word (I'm running XP) - and my Norton Anti-Virus is completely up-to-date and running 24/7. Baffling and worrisome, but at least I had a fairly recent backup of everything vital, plus I had created a second partition on which to store My Documents, so that in case something like this happened I would have some hope that my current stuff would be safe. After a lot of struggling, unplugging, replugging, and cursing, the hard drive finally decided to let the BIOS detect it again and reappear. It would not start Windows, though, so I started Recovery Console and ran chkdsk /R on drive C: (which is the name of the partition with the operating system on it), and it took forever and finally told me that there were "unrecoverable errors on the drive".

First Question: when it says "the drive", is it talking about that partition only, or does it mean the whole physical hard drive? And if it means just that partition, wouldn't that indicate that the other partition is likely to go bad, too? (Assuming that the problem is physical, not viral.) Is it safe for me to continue using the second p... Read more

Okay, heres the problem. My HDD died a few weeks ago. There were all sorts of scan disk errors, and the drive couldn't access certian things. A system file wen't corrupt and rendered everything inoperable. New HDD time. Got one from newegg, and like one day after installing it, It had the same exact problem. My roommate assured me that it was just a faulty drive. Anywho, I RMA'ed it and got a new one. Its been running fine for about 2 maybe 3 weeks, and just now I hear that noise HDD's make when they are having trouble acccesing. This happened while playing world of warcraft. it booted, all normal sounds, came up to the screen where it says your motherboard manufacturer and if your dvd/cd drive are working(primary and secondary). then the screen goes blank.
switched the wires back to the originals, same result.

Hello. I recently set up a second Harddrive on my PC. Pentium 4 running XP Pro Media Player. When I set it up the second Harddrive open and I was saving files to it for about a week without any problems. Today I attempted to save a file to the second Harddrive and I received a message "do you want to reformat G Drive?" Can someone tell me what has happened to my PC that it will not open my second Harddrive? Thank you.

Go to Start...Run...and type in "diskmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Let us know what it says there about your hard drive (you can post a screen shot if you'd like).

I bought a new WD scorpio blue for my hp laptop. backed up all the data on my old hard drive, removed it, and put the new hard drive in. windows is not seeing it, and i'm not sure the bios is either. please help! i'd like to use the new harddrive (bigger capacity) instead of the old, but i don't understand how to have the system know the harddrive is there.

the laptop is an hp compaq 8510w. i had win7 running it on for about 4 months. the new harddrive is the western digital blue scorpio 500gb.

Thanks for any help,

First, is it the same drive type (SATA or IDE)? Then assuming it is compatible, do you have the appropriate ports enabled in the BIOS? Can you tell if the drive is powering up? Do you have the latest BIOS installed on the laptop?

This is in continuation of another thread I have here:
My pc is with no harddrive, so I went to my other pc with two harddrives. In Windows, it shows my C drive working (obviously), and my D drive as an extra, where I've put some music and other stuff in. So it should work right?

Well, I took that drive out, and put it into my pc with no harddrive in it, and wanted to install Windows on it. But for some reason the installation does not even show the drive as attached.

In command prompt, I tried CHKDSKing it by running this command: chkdsk c: /f
and it gives me this error:
Cannot open volume for direct access.

Whats wrong? :O

also if I try to go into the drive just by writing c: it says: The device is not ready.

I've tried every chkdsk command with a lot of attributes too, none of them give me access :/

After booting from the Setup disk, the Setup files are loaded, then the Setup disk returns "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer".
I can't continue.

The machine is working perfectly (although slow).
The C: drive shows up in Explorer.
The BIOS recognizes the Drive.

The C: drive shows up in Explorer.

If the C: drive is showing up in Explorer, why are you trying to install new copy of XP?
Boot into Bios, look to HDD Mode, or SATA, change the HDD mode from AHCI to IDE or Compatibility mode to have XP setup recognize the HDD.

Hello this is my first post. And i could REALLY use some help.

I have a western digital 640 gig hard drive that is SATA. My motherboard does have SATA sockets in it but they seem to be bad so i have been using a SATA to USB converter to plug it into my usb port and still be able to use it. Recently i had to switch it out for and 80gig SATA to format it for a friend. Well now when i plug the 640 gig back up it only recognizes it as an 80 gig. I've never had this problem before and i am at a complete loss as what to do. I use an 80 gig IDE hard drive for my OS, which is Windows 7 Ultimate.

My hardware specs are
AMD 6000 3.0ghz dual core
9500GT Nvidia GPU
MSI motherboard (not sure on the exact kind, though i can find out when i get home)
and 3 gigs of DDR2 ram.

Also ever since i've switched those hard drives my computer has also been freezing on me, usually either at start up or a couple minutes after i've logged onto windos. Sometimes it will turn on but not boot up. Although everything works fine in safe mode except for the hard drive. Although when i plug in my portable 100 gig hard drive it is recognized right away.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as the 640 gig hard drive has my entire life on it just about. I've even tried pluggin it into a laptop and it is still showing that it is 80 gig.

thank you for any help.

P.S. yes i've made sure i have the 640 gig plugged in.

A:HardDrive USB is no longer working

For some reason I had exactly the same problem yesterday. Now in my case I can take some of the blame as I was trying to get the USB drive to do some weird things and I also did some unspeakable atrocities to Windows, but anyway the way I got out of this was to initialize the drive in device manager. I left it as MBR as I need it to boot various other computers. The options to format were greyed out after initializing so I had to do that via diskpart in a command prompt.
Please note that formatting the drive will wipe everything that is on it!
Your uninstalled driver on Alienware is not necessarily a sign of a problem. Are you sure it was not there before you had trouble with the drive? If it wasn't you might want to give old System Restore a try........

After sucessfully removing a lot of viruses with malwarebytes and manual cleaning.

I trying to fix the lsp by running an /SFC Scannow on the cmd; but when it was finished it said it successfully repaired a lode of files.

After a reboot, I find that my Avast, internet, lsp are all still busted and to make things worse my windows seven is no longer genuine.

My current theory is that the repair messed up an aspect of the registry spectacularly.

A repair guy is coming round my place soon but until then, it would be a great help if I knew exactly what I was dealing with.

What is the cause of the problem and how can I fix it?

(PS, I don't know if malwarebytes deleted some valuable registry when cleaning the viruses).

When I try to boot something that needs to install something its like c:\ not found enter path, but there is no path. In dos a:\ is the floppy and r:\ is the cd drive, but again the hard drives are missing. I figured that it was something with needed drivers so I went to the manufacturer of the motherboards website and downloaded a drivers package. When running it on the comp it won't run because it says it needs to extract itself to the harddrive. The motherboard is a DBS100 31330A if that helps. How can I get these drives recognized in DOS? I have an older external harddrive (Maxtor) and I just recently bought a new cable to plug it into my computer since I lost my old one. It's one of those cables with a usb at one end (for the computer) and the square-with-two-slanted-corners for the end that plugs into the harddrive. I plug in the AC power adapter into the harddrive and the light on the front goes green. Then, I plug in the USB into my computer (I tried on all 3 usb slots on the front of my comp -- same results every time).

Every single time, I get the little 'do-do' noise that Windows XP makes when connecting a usb device, but the computer doesn't recognize it at all. Nothing shows up under 'My Computer', nothing shows up in the system tray, not even 'Unrecognized usb device'. I'm not really sure what to do because I kind of need this harddrive.

Thanks for any help.

This afternoon I plugged in my external hardrive, and the familiar autoplay options popped up. I accidentally clicked on use media player to play files. Realplayer was taking a while to load, and I didn't want it open in the first place, so I attemptd to close it, and meanwhile clicked on the My Computer link, to view the files that way. I got the non-responding message for real player, so I did Ctrl Alt Del, and hit end program. It still wouldn't end, so I finally just closed my laptop, in an attempt to put it on standby. It didn't go on standby, until after I reopened it. Somewhere in there I had pulled out by external, because it is the kind you don't need to click on safely remove harware. Eventually my laptop was running fine again, and I plugged in the external, and it told me I had put in new hardware and asked me if I wanted to search online to install it. It wasn't new hardware, so I unplugged it again and restarted my laptop. Now it won't even recognize that it's there. It does see that my flash drive is there, so it's not the USB ports. I tried to use my external on my home computer, and it didn't recognize it either. I have a lot of files on there, and I don't want to lose them, I was wondering if there is a way to have my computer recognize my external harddrive again...

Hey everyone,

Hope somebody can help- my computer is an HP Pavilion dv7 PC Notebook, running Vista 64bit, everything at it's most updated. I got prompted to update my system by Windows Update, and I went ahead and clicked on the ones that were security oriented, and one pertaining to my Nvidia HD driver figuring that it couldn't hurt. Well, immediately after this was completed and the system restarted, there arose a problem. The mute key on my quickplay touch pad above the keyboard stays lit orange, meaning muted. I can touch it and the icon in the volume control on the screen will become muted, and I touch it again and it becomes unmuted- but the key itself remains orange as if indicating it's muted... which it sort of is. I'll explain: there is only sound coming out of the subwoofer on the bottom of the computer itself, not out of the high quality speakers above the keyboard. It's troubling me, and I've gone through all the typical procedures, reverting back to the last updated state, deleting the updated files, etc. So, essentially, I know I could use headphones (tried, and they seem to be working fine) or external speakers, but the one that was built into my unit was absolutely top-notch and I loved it. It's troublesome to spend so much money just to have something dumb like this happen, I've had this unit for months and have had no issues until this. I highly doubt it's virus related- just doesn't seem to be the case, and I've scanned for them numerous times now with... Read more

Having a lot of files, I aquired a shiny 500GB WD external harddrive about ten months ago. It's been very good to me; however, this past Saturday night when I connected it to my laptop, RUI didn't pop up (I named my external RUI). Instead, it read Local Disc (G: ). I tried unplugging RUI and reconnecting him many times, but my laptop still fails to recognize him.

I searched the internet for solutions. Many others have had simular experiences and have found a solution by right clicking on My Computer and then clicking on Manage, which leads into Computer Management. From there, they clicked on Disc Management and the drives came up and they regained access to the external harddrive. I attempted to open drive G: but it only lead me to a blank window. I tried to explore drive G:, but that lead me to a blank window as well. After about thirty seconds a window popped up asking me to reformat the drive. If it wasn't for the fact that irriplaceable photographs and home videos from family gatherings were on there, I'd be fine with it, however, I don't want them to be destroyed.

I just got off the phone with Western Digital's tech support with no luck. For one, I didn't understand the man as his accent was very strong, but he had me do the exact same thing I found online. I told him that the window was blank and that the reformatting window came up. I wasn't sure what he said after that. Something about needing to copy or backup the files fro... Read more

Hello everyone,

A month or so ago I updated to Win8, 64bit. That all went fine and everything has been working fine. The night before last the DVD R/W just stopped working.

When I open Windows Explorer the drive is recognized, at least there is a drive letter for it, it says DVD RW Drive (Z: ). Like I said it has been working. I have played movies, installed a PC DVD game, etc.

When I double click on the drive, trying to access the disk that is in the drive I get a popup window saying, Application not found.

Running the troubleshooter accomplishes nothing, it just runs in a circle. The going to the device manager I see the drive, there are no signs of anything wrong (no yellow icons, etc), properties say the device is working properly, and trying to update the driver says that the correct drive is already installed.

I cannot figure out what is going on.

As the login name suggest, my knowledge of things is limited, so please, if you have a suggestion, please explain how to accomplish what you are asking me to do.

Thank you in advance for any help you give me.

Computer is a Dell D630 running in a docking station with Windows XP SP3

Recently I had a problem with an AdAware upgrade which caused my system to go into terminal blue-screen re-boot mode. I solved that by rolling back my system to a stable mode, and all seemed to be fine (and yes, I uninstalled AdAware and will not ever use it again). I provide this info as background since it was a fairly recent event - it may or may not be related to my problem however.

Today I went to upload some pics from my USB-connected camera, and my computer isn't seeing the camera. Tried a different camera, same thing. Tried a thumb-drive, nothing. Tried all the USB ports, including the ones in the docking station, nothing.

I've tried everything I'd read about "fixing" USB ports going away, to no avail. Powered everything down and disconnected overnight, no change. From Device Manager I Uninstalled all my USB drivers and then let them reinstall. That all seemed to go fine, but no change in the final outcome - nothing works when connected to any USB.

FWIW, the USB-connected device will get power when connected, it's just not otherwise communicating.

I'm at a loss as to what to try next.

The card/camera/laptop setup has worked great for me over the past few months.

Long story short, I took some pictures with the camera this morning and tried to get my desktop computer (running windows xp media center) to read the card with it's own built-in reader. Nothing. The card doesn't even get recognized and whenever I click on the correct drive in 'My computer' the window freezes. So I try putting it in a USB card reader...and it worked! But as soon as I tried to get the card to read on my windows 7 laptop, it stopped working completely. Now it won't read on either computer, or the camera. It's as if I'm not plugging in anything at all! I've tried restarting both machines, but it's no use. I can't even format it from my camera. I'm at a total loss here.

I've got more than 400 images on the card that I really want to save here...can anyone help me?

A:Help! SD card no longer recognized!

Hi -

The card may be bad. If you can read it with USB reader, I would copy the images off the SD card, get a new one and see if it works in the various systems.

Hi all.

I have a TSST 208DN DVD drive installed in a Win 8 Pro Toshiba C855 machine. I am no longer able to use the drive and could use your advice and assistance.

The problem began with my always having to reinstall the drivers upon reboot. I found a solution, or so I thought, that advised me to delete my upper and lower filters entries in the registry. I only had an LowerFilters entry for AnyDVD. I deleted it and can no longer use the drive.

Dev Mgr shows drive with yellow excl. triangle (see image #1 below) and this msg under the general tab of properties - Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19) (see image #2 below). I have drivers from MS and Toshiba installed (see image #3 below)

I have already uninstalled and reinstalled and rebooted many, many times. These are my current registry entries:

I have uninstalled and reinstalled AnyDVD. I have put back in the LowerFilters key and deleted it and rebooted many, many times. The registry entries look like those on my other laptop with the exception of lowerfilters set to AnyDVD and upperfilters set to the manufacturer's driver (GEARaspiWDM) and that machine works just fine - for about 10 minutes and then overheats and shuts down - it's a Dell - but that's another story.

The drive has never really worked properly but now it's out of commission. I just got this laptop in June.

Normally you don't need to install any driver for DVD. Windows uses the generic driver for it and it should work.
The quick way to resolve this is to download a trial version of Windows 8 Manager and install it.
On the first screen, click on "Repair Center" then go to "Other Repair(I)" tab to repair your DVD.

Well here is the break down of what happened, I recently got Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I have 3 internal HDDs, a 250Gb, a 1TB and a 2TB.

Originally I had Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit installed on the 1TB others were just used as storage, before upgrading to Windows 7 I backed up everything I needed, then wiped the HDD.

I installed Windows 7 fine onto the 1TB HDD, everything was going smoothly until this morning when I booted up my machine and I got Bootmgr.exe missing, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart. I remembered had this exact same error before in Vista, so I put in my installation disc for 7 put boot from CD in BIOS and waited.

When I clicked repair, my HDD with windows installed was not found, and I had no backup images as I have only had it installed maybe 3 weeks.
I thought I try the other options anyway, tried Repair Start Up option... nothing told me couldn't repair the problem automatically. I tried the BCD path via the command prompt this did nothing.

I went for a search on google (on another PC) for answers I found a Windows 7 x64 Recovery Disc I tried that... nothing.

I luckily had nothing on the 250GB internal so installed Windows on that, thinking that I could maybe reformat the 1TB HDD. However, Disk Management doesn't find it and neither does BIOS.

I have updated my BIOS version to the latest version available.

I have even tried alternative SATA ports... And this is where another problem comes about depending on where I put the cable for t... Read more

I have just recovered from a major spyware/malware infestation with the help of Bleeping Computer and now I get error messages when I try to do things like edit my start up preferences in msconfig. I get this error message: An Accessed Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on an Administrator account to make the specified changes. But I am logged on an Administrator account! Interesting enough, it lets the changes go through even though Windows gives me an error message.I have three users that are administrators on my computer, me, my husband and an alternate user profile. I go into Control Panel>User Accounts and everyone there is designated as an administrator. Switching it on and off doesn't seem to resolve the problem.I read somewhere online that it might be registry damage from my recent malware infestation. One online source said I needed to use a program called SubInCAL to repair it: anyone tried this? Is this the best way to go?Any ideas what the problem is and how I can fix it? Please let me know if you need more information. PS I am a newbie here on the forum...

My CDrom has suddenly stopped working, windows no longer recognizes it.

I have tried replacing the cables, plugging it into a different port and replaced the CDrom all together with one that I know works.

It will power up during the initial boot.

Awhile ago it was announced that the P8P67 Motherboards had a defect or something? Story Here, Im not sure if that relates to my issue.
Other then that the only thing I can think of would be a driver related problem. If that's the case, what can I do.

It doesn't even show in the Device Manager anymore, the only thing the computer shows regarding the CDrom is this entry in the event viewer.

"The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
EventID 7026

A:CDRom no longer recognized.

There is a fix-it for XP, and Vista, but for win 7 it wants the user to run the Hardware troubleshooter first, and then if that does not work re-install the CD player.

See the note under the fix-it button:

Note This automatic fix only applies to Windows XP and to Windows Vista. If your computer is running Windows 7, go to "Windows 7" under the "Let me fix it myself" section. Source: Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

The link under the Windows 7 takes you here

This is harder to explain than to just say......

Go to the troubleshooter in control panel,

Under Hardware and Sounds click on Configure a device.

Click on Advanced >click for automatically fix, and run as Admin.

Start troubleshooter, if it is not fixed, then you have to re-install the player.

It tells how about half way down the page here: Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

EventID 7026:
Event ID 7000 or 7026 is logged in the System log on a computer that is running Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows Server 2008

Hey everyone!

So, I've been running into a weird situation and I was hoping to run into some clarification on what I could do to fix the problem.

I got a 128GB Flash Drive which I proceeded to install a portable, bootable Fedora install on. Of course, naturally, since Fedora is light weight, I had all sorts of other room left over. However, when I plug the USB drive back into the main Desktop, it no longer asks me what I want to do with the USB drive, even with AutoPlay stuff disabled. It's as if the USB Drive doesn't exist.

However, I checked quickly on one of my laptops that has never seen the drive and the AutoPlay on that device immediately popped in. When I selected "view files and folders", voila, I could see the Flash Drive with a folder for the Fedora install and plenty of other open space.

How can I force my computer to see this Flash Drive all over again?

p.s. Funnily enough, it's doing the same thing with the storage on my fiance's iPhone. Which is fantastic... since I can't see her phone anymore when I plug it in (even iTunes doesn't see it).

A:USB Drive No Longer Recognized?

Hi Tesagk,

I have had this problem a few times and USB drives are apparently ignored when reattached to the port. I usually find a restart of the PC with the device disconnected sorts out the port settings and when the device is reconnected it is recognised OK.

I have an old PC (Compaq Presario Desktop 7470 ) that i purchased from a yard sale. I removed the old HD and replaced it with a quantum 30gb at Lct 20 HD that had Windows ME OS on it. I booted the pc and it booted fine except windows booted up in 16 bit color. I shut down and booted again. same thing. i shut down a third time and checked BIOS settings, then set them to default. Now BIOS doesn't recognize the HD or the CD-ROM drive. I have checked all connection, reset BIOS, removed the CMOS battery, I literally have tried everything I can think of to get things going on this old PC, but I am at the end of my rope. I will say that scandisk will recognize the HD and says it is OK. I have also taken the HD out and hooked it up to another PC and it boots up Windows ME just fine. I have also tried every jumper setting on the HD and Cd-rom to no avail and the only drive that shows up in BIOS is the 3.5 floppy drive which will boot up a Windows ME Boot Disk. I don't have a problem installing a fresh OS but want and need the PC to recognize the drives before i can do that correct?
I am ready to pull my hair out!! Can anyone please help me?!!!?

A:HD recognized by scandisk but HD not recognized by BIOS

probably the booting sequence is wrong due to the fact that you told the BIOS to load the preferred defaults. If you have a standard BIOS:

*go to advanced BIOS settings.... your going to see a big list of options .

<< check this picture for visual example>>
*take a look at the first , second and third boot device and change them to:

1- HDD - 0
2- HDD - 1
3- HDD - 2

Alternate them accordingly.

**probably the reason why your pc booted up at 16 bit the first time , may be
because you haven't installed the drivers for your video card yet.

Got a really weird problem here...I had a few games sitting on my desk for a couples months, and now my CD/DVD drive no longer recognized any of the discs when I put them in my drive. In other words, after putting them in the drive, if I go to My Computer, there is nothing indicated as being in my D: drive, and when I try to load the game it says that the disc wasn't found. However, my other games all work fine, it is just the few I had on my desk that no longer work. Also, I tried using the discs in another computer and they worked fine there. What the heck is going on here, I'm completely stumped.

We have an internal modem on a PC we just got in January (OS is XP Home). A few days ago it decided to hide. It's no longer listed in the Device Manager, nor in Phone & Modem options. I remember seeing it somewhere listed as "Removed", but now I can't find it. We've tried rebooting but don't have any other ideas.

The only thing I can think of that might have changed recently is that I downloaded a graphic font that came with some sort of fax viewer program, which I noticed put an icon on the desktop. I deleted the icon, but didn't think that would have any affect on the modem settings.

Thanks in advance...

I have a Dell laptop that was working fine with my linksys wireless router when the other day it suddenly stopped working. I have a message that the network no longer recognizes the computer.

I rebooted both my main computer and the laptop thinking I may have had an IP conflict but that hasn't cured the problem.

My laptop is detecting the network but it has a red x next to it.

I made no changes to anything. Why would this be happening and would the problem be with the linksys router, my main computer, or the network magic program?

I don't think it's with the laptop as I stayed in a hotel the other night and was able to log in to their wireless network.

Where should I look first?

If anyone could please help me I would appreciate it--after hating the new iTunes 11 (it froze up nearly every time I opened it) I went into Control Panel & used the Programs feature to uninstall it, and subsequently reinstalled an older version, 10.6.3. I was trying to burn some compilation CDs for a couple of my siblings for Christmas. Upon trying to burn these CDs, iTunes informed me that the "disk burner or software was not found." After doing a little research I went into the Device Manager in the Control Panel to see that there were little yellow warning signs, I tried running the troubleshooter & downloading a registry fix troubleshooter but neither really worked-- it downloaded the drivers and then informed me that they failed to install. I'm assuming this is some kind of registry issue that removing iTunes maybe affected, I don't know?

I have an Acer latptop, the following is the information I got from running DxDiag, if there is other information needed that I should obtain please inform me & I'll try to post it promptly--I'd like to be able get my CD drive working so I can burn these cds for my brothers.

My HDD was fine and dandy until I recently had a problem and had to reinstall windows on it. When i went to install windows I noticed that it listed nothing to install to. I checked my bios and the HDD is there so I retried and seen it was still gone from the installation so i grabbed an old XP disk and tried it to no avail and also used ubuntu to see if it would detect it and it actually did but failed to partition the HDD or even install at all. I have tried 2 different windows 7's 3 different XP's, ubuntu, and 98, and a straight up dos. At the same time I tried to fix the MBR and the boot sector and did all them nice pretty DOS commands and the same in terminal.tried drivers to no avail and finally decided to come here and post. I would chalk it up to a dead HDD but my bios sees it just fine

I have been using my logitech M510 wireless mouse successfully with Windows 8.1 until Windows 10 installed itself by surprise on my machine (I had been declining each time the window for installing it popped up, I guess I shouldn't have broken form and just closed it out. That, I guess, made it think I wanted my computer to be restarted in the middle of a game. But whatever, it removed the horrendously anti-user start menu of 8.1, so I'm fine with it). Now my computer refuses to recognize that the receiver is plugged in. Device Manager does not display it under any relevant tab:
As to fixes,
YES, I HAVE tried all other USB Ports on my computer.
YES, I HAVE tried different computers (a Windows 8.1 (which worked) and a Windows 7 (which did not, for different reasons)).
YES, I HAVE installed SetPoint and Unifying Software from the Logitech support page multiple times, neither recognize the device as plugged in.
NO, I will NOT do a system restore (I don't see any reason to if this is my only problem with the new OS).

If anyone could provide a fix, I'd be very appreciative.

My dvd-rw drive is no longer recognized in my Dell Inspiron 1501 which is a little over 2 years old. When I put a dvd or cd in it, it spins and the green light blinks as though it is checking to read it though. However, it will not go any further than that, and it doesn't appear on my hardware window or in my computer window.

I dropped my backpack last week, and the laptop was in it. I think this may have something to do with it, but I'm not sure. Also, when it is closed now, on one of the corners, it seems to be sticking out a bit. This again makes me fear that dropping it messed it up, but the power still works. Therefore, I'm not really sure what it could be. Any ideas for things to test or how to fix it?

Hi everyone, and thank you for checking this out.

I have a serious problem; while playing a game, and at+tabbing to change a tune in iTunes, my PC BSOD'd. Now I have had a couple BSODs before on my 2yr old Medion PC but before they were related to a dodgy game-controller of mine.

Now it seems to be much more severe, when I rebooted after the crashdump I got no image on screen at all, after rebooting a couple of times I decided to try the VGA port on my onboard, which showed the start-up recovery thingy.

After going through start-up recovery my system installed the drivers for my onboard videocard and now it seems my original card has disappeared, won't be seen by windows 7 in anyway whatsoever...

Now I'm not a PC expert, I have checked out the BIOS and noticed the PCI-E had it's power disabled but other than that I cannot see what has changed and whether or not my videocard was bricked in the process or if there's a different problem.

The videocard is a AMD Radeon HD 7770, ASUS HD7770 Series, which has performed excellently so far, no glitches or any signs of overheating to my knowledge...

So my question is.. Can I check whether or not my card is bricked? and if the card is okay, can I re-enable it somehow?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Best, Jasper

I had a laptop that was factory delivered with two hard drive partitions: C: and D:

Since C: was full and D: was almost empty, I used PartitionMagic to join C: and D: together to make one big C: drive, D: is now gone.

Since that operation, I can't use my cardreader anymore.
Before I joined C: and D: , I would insert the cardreader in the usb port, and I would get 4 additional drive letters.
Now I insert the card reader, and nothing happens. No error message, no new drive letters appear.

Anything I could do to solve this?
