Adding a battery to a mini desktop PC

Q: Adding a battery to a mini desktop PC

I have a very small Asus desktop PC that only uses about 30 watts of electricity. It's supply voltage is 24VDC which it receives from a 24VDC power supply on the piece of equipment it is installed in. I want to add a battery to it so that when this machine is shutdown and power is removed abruptly from the PC it can shutdown gently. I am having no luck finding an off the shelf UPS so I was hoping to add a battery pack (LIKE THIS: http://www.bixmart.com/BiXPower-BP160--19V-12V-Rechargeable-Battery-Power-Bank-Pack_p_109.html) and trick the PC into thinking its a laptop. Does anyone know how this might be accomplished?

Hi

My motherboard got a port called Mini PCIE. It looks similar to the standard PCIE port but is much smaller (I guess that's why it's called mini ) AND it appears to be tilted 90 degrees to the right if I'm right. So I would have to place the card vertically. Space seems to be limited. Of course I could be wrong on that.

Board type is MSI AM1i

Photo is below. The port in question is just next to the two SATA data ports. (actually on the left, in the second pictures)
I'd like to install a Wifi card there. Please tell me. How and where? Where am I supposed to place the antennas? Do you know any good cards? I didn't buy the card yet, only the motherboard

Thanks a lot

^^ The mini PCIE port is just above (again, next to the white-blue capacitors and left to the sata ports), and lies vertically in the picture with a number tag written to it

Hey all,

I happen to have a Supermicro Mini-ITX motherboard that has a free mini-PCIe slot.

I'm usually vehemently pro wired Ethernet, but in this particular application I just can't find a way to wire things to make it work, so I am considering sticking an Intel 7260 WLAN card in the slot, and using that instead.

The one thing I can't seem to figure out is, what do I use as an antenna? I've only ever used mini WLAN cards in Laptops and all-in-one mini-PC's before, where they come with preinstalled antenna wires that use those tiny little connectors.
I have searched eBay/Amazon/Newegg for 2.4/5.8Ghz wifi antennas, but all of them have the larger BNC type connectors on them, not the tiny little ones that the mini WLAN cards need.

Is anyone familiar with any mini WLAN connector headers or anything like that? Essentially, those BNC-type connectors on one end with a little retention ring, so I can just drill a hole in the case, and tighten them in and connect an external antenna, and those tiny little plugs on the other end.

Or is there another way of accomplishing what I need to do?

Much obliged,
Matt

A:does my hp mini book need new battery?

Are you using AC or battery only? If you are using AC, then it's likely not a battery issue.

Based on your description of it simply running "slow", I'd suspect an OS/software issue, or something hardware related such as a faulty HDD.

I've recently purchased this device (September 15) and having upgraded to windows 10 and Bios V5.00 I find that if I fully charge both batteries and shutdown windows 10 (Not in standby) then both batteries are flat 3 days later when I come to use it again! it also takes over 10 hours to fully charge when powered off and over 24 hours if left running.

Can anyone confirm if this is normal? Or have I got faulty batteries or device?

Thanks in advance

Hi guys,

my unit came fully discharged which was quite annoying. So I charged up the tablet to 100% and the keyboard battery was at the time reading 100% charge. Applied the bios update 1.70 and after boot the keyboard battery was showing at 0%. It will now not charge, the tablet is at 100% and Windows reports battery 2 is charging but it stays at 0%.

There is a high pitched electrical whine coming from the keyboard dock? Could it be a faulty battery? Or is it so deeply discharged it will not charge again?

Thanks in advance

A:Battery issues with brand new Satellite Click Mini

If the keyboard battery is deeply discharged, you have to keep the AC adaptor connected for at least 24 hours…

But the high pitched electrical whine coming from the keyboard dock sounds really strange…
I can imagine that there is some lose connection or an hardware issue…

Anyway, tablet must be connected to AC adaptor and docked to the keyboard dock while charging… please also ensure that the tablet is powered OFF (press and hold the power button 10-15 sec in order to power off the tablet)

Hi,

I just recieved my Satelite Click Mini a few days ago and there seems to be an issue with the battery in the keyboard.

When I received the laptop I fully charged it and all was fine. I have been using the laptop frequently and noticed today that the main battery was down to 3%. I assumed that the power would revert to the 2nd battery but it did not and shut down. I then recharged and powered it up however the charging seemed to stall at about 40%.

After checking the forums I thought that a bios update (to 1.7) would solve this however it has not and other issues have flagged up. The first battery charges very slowly and seems to stall at 70% the second battery is showing at zero percent (before update it was at 100%), it also states that its plugged in and not charging.

Also, and i don't know if this is linked, but I found it extremely hard to type in this forum as the screen is flickering and I have to wait after pressing each key. I have had to post this on another laptop.

Any help would be appreciated, I am worried this laptop needs to go back to the factory.

Many thanks

A:Satellite Click Mini L9W-B - Battery/Charging issues

There have been a few ideas thrown around here in the forum. Easiest thing to try at this time would be to leave the tablet AND keyboard plugged into the wall to charge overnight. If the notification centre is still showing that it's not charging you might have to try a (maybe several) cold reboot (hold down the power button for 5-10 secs while tablet is on) to try to fix it. I would also ensure that Windows Update is up to date.

I'd just like to pitch in just for sharing's sake that BIOS update 1.70 increased my batttery life immensely. I was having to charge the tablet every night, now I can go every other night.

Firstly, just to say that this is a great little device but I like many have experienced teething problems during battery recharge.

My bios is is greater than v5, ie v5.2 now.
My experience in Nov 2015 was of battery number two not charging. It seemed to be something to do with the tablet connection, as on a few occasions just unclipping and reclipping seemed to then allow battery two to charge.

At this stage I will say that I primarily use the device like a mini laptop, rarely as a tablet, so am not generally clipping and unclipping the tablet all the time. For a while after it kept charging ok, no unclipping etc, all was well. Then I fitted a leather case, having to unclip the tablet to do so.

This triggered the battery numbr two no charge again. However after several unclips and reclips, plus a power off button sequence (as many have said before) my loveable Toshiba seemed fine at recharching both batteries again. Just a few days ago, though it went back into no charge of battery two mode. I wondered if the leather case was causing a slight uncoupling of the tablet to keyboard body and so removed the leather case, and unclipped and reclipped tablet and keyboard once again, this did not sovle the charging problem.

However closing down from the side power button and restarting several times seems to have solved the problem, again, perhaps only for the moment . . . I wait to see on my next recharge.

Also I have yet to see 12-13hrs available time shown o... Read more

Having just bought a ClickMini to replace my trusty Libretto 100 there are a couple of things that I hope other users or forum experts can help me with.

1) does anyone know how to TURN OFF tapping to click on the ALPS 'mouse pad'. Having been used to a 'nipple' and proper click bars this 'feature' does not work well for me, giving false activations more often than I would like. Note that I have looked at the pad properties in Control Panel and, it appears from this, that tapping either is not active (which it is) or that it cannot be changed. Note also that the ALPS driver is up-to-date having downloaded from the Toshibs website without effect on my problem.

2) how can I display the status of both the battery in the tablet section and that in the keyboard dock? Several folk refer to doing so, or seem to, in the threads below but I cannot find any way of doing so. Your help and advice will be valued.

Finally, although new to this forum and with a new machine, I am far from a Newbie in PC computing terms having bee using compurters in various guises since before the IBM PC was invented. So I am far from being inexperienced and unable to read between the lines of an instruction manual, indeed I have written many myself!

Hoping someone out there can help, yours aye

I've got my click mini for a day and the battery of my tablet is empty, while the battery of the keyborddock is still 100%.
The click mini says i need to charge it. Why can't i use the battery of the keyboarddock?

A:Satellite Click Mini L9W-B - tablet battery is empty

Please check your BIOS version.
There is a new BIOS v1.7 which solves the issue with the keyboard dock battery charging status which was not recognized by Window system correctly.

You should also know that the battery
#1 refers to battery inside the tablet and the battery
#2 refers to battery inside the keyboard dock.
The battery status can be checked in the Windows Mobility Centre window.

When you use the tablet with the keyboard dock, the second battery pack (battery inside the keyboard dock) is the first source to provide power! It happens also that the battery could be deeply discharged
In such case it?s necessary to keep the tablet and keyboard dock charging for at least 24 hours.
The tablet must be connected to AC adaptor and docked to the keyboard dock.

Puchased my Satellite Click Mini about three weeks ago from Amazon in the UK. Extremely happy with it up till now. After three weeks of overseas business trips in Asia I just noticed that the back of the tablet section/screen is bulging out slightly where I think the battery is. It is visible under the right light conditions and can also be felt.

I've had an iPhone that had this problem before but I did not expect this to come up so quickly on a three week old machine. I've only been using the packaged adaptor to charge with but have also been using plug convertors for different regions where I have been travelling. Couple of questions..

1) Anyone else had this issue with the battery bulging out? Or am I just imagining this and everyone else's is also like this?
2) I'm not able to get back to the UK until sometime in December but really need this machine for work etc. If the battery is gone, will it be semi-safe to use until I can get this back to Toshiba?

Would love to hear anyone else experiences

My keyboard battery will not charge, I have left it charging for over 24 hours after battery 1 reached 100%.

I've checked the bios version which is 1.70. I've read other posts about this exact issue but unfortunately nothing is working for me.

It shows the charging symbol on battery 2 however it has not gone above 0%. If I turn it on the battery immediately drains from battery 1.

Please advise me on this issue as I will otherwise have to return my satellite click mini. Thanks in advance

Did you completely power off the unit?

Do that… press and hold power button until the unit would shut off.
Additionally you can shut off the unit pressing and holding SHIFT button and then choose SHUT OFF

Then check the connection between the keyboard docker and tablet… if necessary disconnect and connect it again.
After that power up the unit again and check the battery charging status connection the AC adaptor to the device.

I have this laptop for about five months.

At first everything was working fine. But suddenly a problem appeared with the loading of the screen battery, no matter how long I charge it, it stays stuck at 80 percent. So I can only get 40% overall battery now...

Since one of the main reasons I bought this laptop was its long battery life, this is a big problem for me...

If anyone could suggest any fixes for this, it would be much appreciated!

I bought this back in October, upgraded the BIOS almost immediately and since then it has been very reliable in everyday use (now on Windows 10, 1511). However, during that period there has been the same power issue two or three times. While used on a laptop on battery power it shuts down completely for no apparent reason and cannot be switched on again with the power button. If then connected to the charger the switch operates normally and the PC reboots. The battery monitor shows the tablet at 2% (which should trigger a shutdown when used as a tablet) but the keyboard at ~ 100%.

This suggests to me a specific bug in the firmware or driver which is triggered by a particular set of circumstances, e.g. the battery switchover point happens to coincide with a timed change to sleep mode. Its annoying because apart from a possible loss of work it means I need to carry the charger even though the batteries will last all day.

Two questions. Has anyone else experienced this or seen it reported? Is there a simple way to inform Toshiba in the hope (!) that it might be added to a list of bugs to investigate?

Hi there, first-time poster/toshiba user here.....

So I got my click mini about 2 weeks ago......but from day one the battery doesn't seem to charge right.

The tablet battery would charge fine and would do so till a full 100%.

Then the keyboard battery would start charging and indicate that it is charging but it would only stay that way, the percentage levels for the keyboard battery would not go up.

The batteries combined would have a total percentage level of 51% and never higher. And when I unplug the charger the battery level in the tablet would start depleting. The keyboard battery would always show 0% whether plugged in or not.

I have updated to BIOS 1.6, did windows update, reinstalled to original settings and even tried out the 24hr continuous charge suggested here and also suggested by tech support but nothing has changed.

I'm kinda at a wits end with this as since I am living in Singapore I can't send it sent in to be repaired as its not under warranty here(they don't even have the hardware/software for it apparently) plus it'll cost me $150 just for them to look at it.

I was told by tech support when I first discovered the problem that BIOS 1.6 would solve the problem. But it has not.....and kinda weird too that they removed BIOS 1.6 update just a few days after releasing it.

Kinda frustrated coz I really like the laptop(perfect for on-the-go/travel).

What I see now is that the Tablet is charged, which is good, but the keyboard is 'charging' according to windows, but it also only stays at 0%, thus not charging for real. I do also hear a high pitched noise coming from the keyboard when it is trying to charge. I have only tried to let it charge while it is in sleep mode so far. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Hi,

I have the following big problem with my Satellite Click Mini L9W-B - this happened already two times.

I suspect that this may be connected to some Windows 8.1 setting. It also may be it is BIOS related.

PROBLEM: if I leave the laptop in a sleep mode (by just closing the lid), then If I do not use it for some time (>10 hours) then after that I could not switch the laptop on - it simply does not respond to any keys including the power on button. It does not matter whether I connect the power or disconnect it, I still can not power on the laptop, also it does not matter whether I try it with or without the keyboard attached. BUT: the battery on back on the screen is warm ,so obviously the laptop has not been switched off completely and something (i.e. windows sleep mode or bios or something else) is preventing me to power it on.

The solution I have so far is to leave the laptop for a very long time disconnected (to drain the battery completely - it will not be warm any more!) and then connect the power and then it will be able to switch on. Alternatively, opening the screen cover and manually disconnecting the battery and then connecting it again also work. After that the laptop can be switched on and works fine.

Obviously it is not very good because to wait very long (several days!) or to open the cover is not really a good option when you need the laptop!

Can you help?

May be it is something to do with some power-saving features of Windows?

Many thanks!

A:Satellite Click Mini L9W-B - could not switch it on until battery is fully drained

There is a quick workaround instead of waiting for the battery to drain...

Hold down power button for around 20-30 seconds. That should hardware turn off the power completely allowing you to turn it on again.

Update the bios to the latest version and apply all windows updates after that, that may solve the sleep bug issue

A:Satellite Click Mini - BIOS and keyboard battery problem

Please try this (worked for me)

Turn off laptop fully by holding down the power button

Place it in charger.

test to see whether or not it is fully turned off by quickly tapping the power button once. You should see two battery indicators.

Wait until the top one has charged..

When you see that the charge indicator is on the second battery, this will unfortunately not charge it... however..

tap the power button quickly to see the two indicators.

Quickly remove the charger plug from the laptop (not from the wall) and reinsert it back

Then wait...

After 20 minutes feel the charger on the wall.. if it is warm, then it is charging the keyboard battery...

Use Bios 1.7 or 5 before doing this (I tried it on bios 5)

Hello guys. I have a little issue here. I've got a HP Mini 5103 netbook and I am using Ethernet connection for internet.

I had purchased this device from amazon. Below is a brief history and the issues with the dock battery.

Initially turned the tablet on (while connected to dock) - Took over 30 minutes to charge it. I assume this was because of the battery being discharged. (Thankfully it did eventually start charging)In Windows 8.1. the dock battery was showing as 100% and the tablet battery was rising as it was being charged. The 100% seems to have been an issue with the installed bios on the machine (Which was showing 100%, when it was empty in reality)Updated the bios to V5. Now the dock battery was showing as 0%.Upgraded to windows 10

No amount of charging would charge the keyboard battery. Once the tablet was at 100%, it would give the status of "not charging" for battery 2.

I tried the following

Kept the device connected overnight on 2 occasions (But bear in mind this was for around 10 hours only) - perhaps 24 hours may do the trick? but could not do this as I did not want to risk keeping a device charged while I was at work. Will try this in the weekend.Turned off the device fully and then charged overnight (This would show the two status indicators for the batteries and did show a charge icon next to the second battery, but no change in battery status)Attempted to remove the dock battery. kept it removed (took out connection to circuitboard) for 30 minutes, then reconnected it to the tablet and power, but no change.Attempted to power the device via low powered u... Hello. I have an HP Stream Mini Desktop 200-010 that will not power on again after it turned itself off while it was idle.  No power light, no fan movement, no beep codes. Things I already tried: 1. I replaced the original AC power adapter with a new one. It still does not power on so we can probably rule out a defective AC adapter brick and cable. 2. Held down the power button with the AC cable and other cables unplugged from the computer to discharge the power as stated on the HP support page. It did not fix it. 3. Opened the computer up and checked all the cables inside. This is not quite like a traditional desktop PC, so the only cables I saw in there were to connect the WLAN/Bluetooth card to the antenna on the top and a small cable for the speaker for beep codes. 4. Tried 3different power outlets around the house so a faulty power outlet shouldn't be the case. Is there any other troubleshooting I can try to fix this problem? It is already outside of the 1 year warranty. Normally I would know what to do to fix a problem if it could actually power on but I feel so helpless when it can't even power on to give me beep codes or anything to work with. Thank you in advance!

After a few hours with it, though I am still setting it up... I don't see what ALL the hate is about. Some hate, sure... but it is certainly not as bad as Vista was since its actually a bit faster than Win 7 and can use Win 7 drivers so hardware compatibility isn't that big a deal. The hate is really all about the UI and of course the writing on the wall about where the OS is going.

The main problem I see is that it is really 2 OSes cobbled into one. And MS did not do a good job explaining the differences.

The start menu is replaced by the tiles interface and Windows RT OS UI (ie. the tablet OS, ie. the Xbox360 UI)

However there is a desktop tile. Hit that and you are basically back in Win7 OS land, minus the start menu. In its place is an icon that takes you back to tiles. You can right click it and get a very handy menu though. I think you can even default Win8 to logging right into the desktop tile somehow so you never have to see the tiles if you don't want to. If anyone knows how to do this, I would be glad to know.

The other big stumbling block is understanding the difference between Apps (capital A apps) and desktop applications aka legacy apps.

Starting with the desktop, its the same Win7 desktop we all know and love. It is traditional multitasking and multi-threaded and does its thing with desktop programs, services, steams games, etc. but there are also capital A Apps. I think of them like the old widgets. They also run and you can ... Read more

A:My Mini Win 8 Review as a desktop user

Rich, ( are you a drummer? )

The issue that thinking people have is not to do with the UI itself.

It is more about the direction MS is moving with win8 - taking away control and choice from the user and pushing them way MS wants them to go.

To someone who only clicks/jabs at the screen and does basic things like browsing, emailing, going on twitbook, etc - they won't notice.

Therefore it is easy for MS to lead them where MS wants them to go - and that is not a good place.

I want when the pc starts that the NumLock-key is on. I can't find in the BIOS the setting for this. The Prodesk 600 G1 desktop mini has this option in the BIOS. But the G2 has a new BIOS-layout. I can't find it.

Hello MatijsThere is no BIOS setting item for NumLock state on at boot in G2 series. You can change the NumLock state by modifying registry key if you would like to use NumLock on OS login screen. Please see the below URL for details.Read more at: http://www.tomcomknowshow.com/how-to-turn-num-lock-on-by-default-in-windows-7--8.htmlCopyright © TomComKnowsHow. I have imaged an 800 G1 DM via SCCM with drivers - the keyboard and mouse work fine when I boot into Windows 7 for the first time. However when I image any 800 G2 with the same image and the 800 G2 drivers the keyboard and mouse do not respond in any port. Both machines have only USB 3 ports and I can see the driver files for USB3 and the KB / mouse when I connect the HDD to another machine. They do not work in safe mode either. The KB/mouse do work in the BIOS and during the initial SCCM imaging process. What could be causing this and how can I fix it? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks,Mark

I was in a webpage and chose FILE-SAVE AS to save the link to a file in My Documents. I ended up with a 2"X3" 'mini-webpage' that is STUCK on my desktop.

I went to the My Documents file and removed the actual link.

The 'mini-webpage' remains on my desktop. I cannot move it, hide it or otherwize affect its existance. However, all the links within the 'mini-webpage' work.

Any suggestions re: removal of this pesky problem?

I have a ProDesk 400 G2 Desktop Mini with an i7-6700T which I am trying to get to work with Intel AMT. But I?m not completely sure if this works since there?s a Realtek NIC and not an Intel one.According to the manual there should be an option to configure Intel AMT in the BIOS, but it?s not there. Also there?s no ?Press <ctrl-p> to configure to enter MEBx setup? or similar after BIOS post. The BIOS shows the following information: System BIOS:          N23 Ver. 02.09 08/07/2016ME Firmware Version:  11.0.0.1205 I can?t seem to find information about what the hardware requirements for Intel AMT are, besides vPro. The PCU supports vPro, but I?m starting to think that the Realtek NIC isn?t compatible. Can someone please enlighten me?

I have 3 questions: 1) eventhough its considered an empresarial product there isnt any problem in using it residencialy right? 2) i see the connection of the monitor is only by USB, but i have the DP port in the mini desktop free. Is there an HP cable to connect this monitor USB through the DP port without wasting any of the usb ports? 3) my preference would be for a portable monitor for the mini desktop that when disconnected worked as a tablet. Is there such a product in HPs portfolio? ThanksHugo Silva

Can someone confirm or deny that the EliteDesk 705 G1 desktop mini supports NVMe M.2 drives?  I've seen mention that the 800 G1 systems support NVMe drives, but not the 705 series. The quickspecs for this DM says that the M.2 is PCIe X4, but not whether the BIOS supports NVMe. (The 705 G2 DM specs clearly indicate this. I wish the 705 G1 DM specs were a little clearer.)

I have windows vista with aero, the windows switcher works fine when I am using my regular desktop and the internet. In another words, it switches between my regular desktop and any window that is using the internet. But I can not open a new regular desktop. How can I open a new desktop? Is that possible with vista...?

A:Adding a new desktop

Hello Edd, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It sounds like you may be getting Windows Switcher (aka: Flip 3D) and Switch User (aka: fast user switching) mixed up.

Windows Switcher allows you to flip through your open windows to quickly select one.

Switch User allows you to switch (log on) to a different user account (desktop) on your computer without having to close any programs and files first in the user account that you are currently logged on to, and then be able to switch right back to the first one where you left off.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

No need for an adaptor. What I have seen people do, and what you can do is, double-stick tape it to the bottom of the case. An SSD is very light and compact so that is indeed an option.

This is an older computer that someone brought me to upgrade the memory for them. It had 2 sticks of 128 in it originally and they wanted the max, which is 512. I got 2 sticks of 256 MB RAM. When I removed the original 128 sticks and replaced them with the newer 256 sticks, it wouldn't re-start. It would bring me to the screen where it wanted me to select if I wanted to start it in last known good configuration etc. If I remove 1 stick, it will go on into windows and act normal. I have tried both sticks separately and they both work. I have also tried each of them in the opposite place etc. It shows in the BIOS that it will take 512 mb and that there are 256 in each slot. I finally tried putting 1 of the origianl 128 sticks in with the other 256 and that works. Does anyone have any other suggestions as to how I might get the max in it, or will we have to be happy with the way I have it now, with 1 of each amt. ?? Someone has upgraded it to windows xp home.

A:adding RAM to HP 7840 desktop PC

Just because it will take 512 ram doesn't mean it will take any 2 256 sticks to do it. You need to match the ram by using the pc model number or board model at a site that has a configurator such as www.corsair,crucial or kingston.com.

Good Morning Folks:
This question may be a little general for this site, but here goes. I have a small wireless home network set up with a wired desktop and a wireless notebook. My ISP is Verizon DSL and both units are XP Home. My router is a D-Link DI-524 802.11.2.4 Ghz. I have file and printer sharing enabled and have WPA2 security implemented. MY son has just revived an old 600 mhz Dell from the basement to play some old games that won't run on XP. It runs 98SE and he would like to add it to the home network. It appears that some current USB wireless adapters will work with 98. Has anyone attempted this? Will I be able to stick with WPA if I add a 98 computer? Can file and printer sharing be enabled? I've googled this most of the morning but can't quite find reliable answers. I know this is a general question, any help is appreciated.. Thanks, Dave

A:Adding A 98 Desktop To Home Network?

That's kind of asking a lot but it might be worth investigating if wired is not an option. I'd be pretty sure about finding out if there are drivers specifically for Windows 98 and that they are reliable, because nothing will blue-screen Windows faster than unsupported wireless drivers.

I have a need for an RS232 port probably PCI, but I see such a wide diversity of prices. Which should I choose? Some have a UART and some do not. Do I need a UART? Thanks, Jim

P.S. I'll be using it with ham radio software called Ham Radio Deluxe (HRD) and a ham radio transceiver Yaesu FT-950

A:Adding an RS232 PCI port to my desktop

Check to see if you have a PCI slot. Some newer PC's only have PCIe slots and if they have a PCI slot it is a "bridged" slot to the PCIe bus and many PCI devices will not work or work properly on a bridged PCI slot.

I would check and see what others with that software are using.

I've now got a Verizon MiFi unit and I would like to have my desktop be able to connect wirelessly to it. Currently, I have to plug it into the desktop via USB, but when doing that, it no longer will broadcast a wireless signal (since using it with a USB is for greater security) and therefore my daughter and son can't use the laptop and iPod.

Now, I'm guessing that I'll need a particular network card that would be compatible with my computer. My computer is a custom built one, not a brand name. Below are the computer specs from the TSG system info utility:
Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.1
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 3, 32 bit
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+, x86 Family 15 Model 107 Stepping 2
Processor Count: 2
RAM: 2047 Mb
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE, 512 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 152625 MB, Free - 82383 MB;
Motherboard: MSI, MS-7369, 1.0, To be filled by O.E.M.
Antivirus: AntiVir Desktop, Updated: Yes, On-Demand Scanner: Enabled

Any suggestions? Need any other info? I have SIW, so I can get pretty much any info on the system that anyone needs.

Unfortunately, I've only seen the option to save on one user's desktop on my Vista laptop, not on my XP computer.

To get rid of them, you can right-click the icon and click 'Delete'. This won't affect your husband's desktop, nor will it uninstall the game.

Hi
question as to adding more memory for a OptiPlex 740 desktop
Using Windows XP Pro, processor is 2.71 Ghz
If adding one 2 gig non ECC dimm, task manger says only 1.75 G
if adding a second 2 gig dimm ( 4 gig total) task manger only shows 3.25 gig
adding 2 512 Meg (1gig) (total 5 gig) task manger then only shows 2.75 gig
Looking a BIOS each time shows the correct amount of RAM but why is not all the memory added being shown or used, why showing less memory then installed and reporting even less when I went to 5 gig total ?
Also I'd like to up the CPU processor speed as I do lots of Excel spreadsheets with large amount of data is very slow processing with OEM CPU
Can this be done, if so what type of socket can be used, would the BIOS support it and what processor, wattage and max speed would be allowed ?

Thanks

I thought this would be so easy-- my aunt asked if she could have my speakers from my old computer when I got my new one. But when I plugged them into her speaker jack, the volume is so low, it's hard for a person with GOOD hearing to hear anything. I opened the control panel to access the audio controls and have them all at max and that's the best I can do. If there's not a simple fix here, she'll just have to be content with what she has because my knowledge of computers is rudimentary at best. I was hoping there might be some suggestions to help us out. Thanks!

I have a desktop that is in a remote location that can ping back and forth between the domain controller at the main headquarters, but not by name.  I have added the DC to the hosts file of the remote PC and added the suffix of the domain to the list
of dns suffixes' to check, and added a DNS record on the DC for the remote PC.  They are on different subnets.  192.168.0.0 and 192.168.3.0
The thing I am trying to do is add the remote PC to the domain.  When I try to join it says it cannot find a domain controller.

The DC is windows server 2012, the desktop is Win 7

Hello.

Months ago I downloaded Just Cause 2 from Steam, but I had a few problems playing the game in full screen. I was searching for a solution on YouTube and I found a person who told basically told the viewers to add a new display and use that in order to get the full screen working when playing Just Cause 2. So I did that, it worked perfectly fine, but after I changed back to my regular display I noticed that the icons rearranged themselves for some reason. They rearrange every time I wake the PC up, turn it off/on and when I restart it. This has been bothering me for quite a while and now I believe it's time to fix it. If you look below you'll find a link to the YouTube video, so you can see what I actually did. You can stop watching at 0:40 as the Steam part doesn't matter.

Thanks for reading.

Kind regards,
Darundo.

My company purchased three HP ProDesk 600 G1 SFF desktop computers recently, upgrading from three Optiplex 380s. The office uses an older, networked dot matrix printer. Some of the software that prints to this printer requires a Parallel Port driver assigned to LPT1, and the ProDesk 600 G1 does not come with a Parallel Port built-in (it has a spot on the motherboard where one can be added, judging from the motherboard layouts I have found online for this product). I need to purchase expansion cards that will work with Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and can be added to the hardware on this desktop computer. I just need to know which Parallel Port card to buy. I find the HP support site rather complicated and could not find a place where I could investigate what parallel port expansion cards would work with this desktop. All help is appreciated.potterjazz

bought bluetooth usb micro adapter, (Nexxtech), successfully downloaded installation cd, computer recognizes usb dongle but there is no bluetooth icon and I cannot add any devices. I am trying to use my computer to link music to my new bose portable speaker.

Previously downloaded fsquirk but cannot figure out how to remove it and wonder if that has any bearing?

A:trouble adding bluetooth to Gateway desktop

Hello and welcome Carol now download Revo Uninstaller to get rid of the fsquirk?? never heard of it to be honest and usually one has to "pair" the device to the machine with Blu tooth.

Now from a Google there are no drivers for that dongle and it should be recognized in Devices and Printers see my pic of my mouse there mind you my laptop has an internal Blu tooth so I cannot say for sure if the dongle will be there. Also if you see my other pic go to there and see what is listed you can access that through Control Panel or there should be a small pointer lower right on the taskbar that you can click to "Customise" and just look through the listing to see if it is there.

Is there a way to change the desktop background in Win 7 without switching sounds back on and my screen saver off? This is really annoying when all I want to do is change the background. I don't want to go through the same rigmarole each time of switching sounds off again and the screen saver back on every time I decide I fancy a different picture.

Anyone got any ideas?

Hi BionicGear83,

That's just the way Windows 7 does it I'm afraid :/ however, here is a great tutorial for how to create a customized backgrounds library, browseable in the same Personalization window, that may end up being even more useful than what you had originally intended: Neowin.net - How to: Create custom wallpaper collections in Windows 7

This issue just has started. It worked for the 3 years I have owned 20007. I have all the correct boxes checked, I think. The only thing I changed, which coincided with the alerts not working, was added an IMAP account.

Could the adding an IMAP account disable the desktop alert feature?

Thanks

A:Outlook 2007: No Desktop Alert on new emails after adding IMAP account

First let me clarify. I don't have Outlook 2007. But I do have 2003 on one of my machines. That said, I don't believe that just adding an IMAP account would have an adverse effect on your alert settings unless you somehow inadvertantly disabled the feature during the setup of the account. Again, I'm working with 2003, but in my main navigation menu, under Tools, I have a category for Rules and Alerts. This includes an interface for setting up the various rules for your email alerts. I'd start there and make sure all of your preferences are still set up correctly.Hope this helps,Bill

Hey guys, i was wondering is there such thing as a Desktop computer battery. External or Internal batteries will do but i just cant seem to find anything. I have a lot of power cuts and it annoys me so much when my computer just dies.

Thanks for the help in advance

A:Battery for a DESKTOP COMPUTER

My two penn'orth but I'd be happy to be corrected: to run a modern desktop PC for any length of time, and without using really exotic (= expensive and user-unfriendly) batteries, you would need a hefty car battery and a very meaty inverter to convert 12 volt DC to your mains AC voltage at the necessary wattage.
If you require only to stop your PC being shut down abnormally, take a look at UPS's (uninterruptible power supplies).

I own two new Dell Laptops, one a Precision workstation and the other an everyday Latitude, both running Win 7 Pro. Both have new batteries, so that's not an issue. Please do not suggest I check my battery. My system power settings are correct for both AC power and on battery, so that's not a problem either.
I replaced a Dell XP machine and an older Compaq machine running a Win 7 32 bit upgrade from Vista. Both of the older machines, upon reaching the preset low power settings limits, would open a pop up window on my desktop and alert me to either save my work and shut down or plug in the power cord. It would supersede and open on top of any work windows I had open. Both of the two new machines have no such pop open alert window and my computer often hibernates unexpectedly. Not a crisis, but a real pain when in the middle of work. I know that there are taskbar icon notifications and audible alert tones, but neither is useful for me. I must keep my computer muted when working and my taskbar is set to extreme hi-res with small icons, so you can't really notice the taskbar alert when concentrating on your work. Is the desktop pop open alert window gone forever, just turned off somehow, or what? Some one please advise. Thank you.

A:No Desktop Pop Up Alert for Low Battery

PS - I should explain. When I write "concentrating on my work", I mean that I create complex 3D solid models for expensive tooling and manufacturing businesses in a program which often is on top of the taskbar for screen optimization. They require my full attention and, as the result, the taskbar low power notification is pretty much useless for me. The desktop pop up window, which doesn't now open, worked great.

This was done successfully in Windows 10 for Google Chrome browser.

The normal shortcut icon as installed: Target: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe"
Shortcut path: C:\Users\Public\Public Desktop
The name on this desktop shortcut is "Google Chrome"

Processed tried for creating another desktop shortcut icon for Google Chrome:
Open File Explorer
Go through path to the item C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe
Right-Click this chrome.exe item or file
Chose Send To..., and within the choices there, chose Desktop(create shortcut)
The new desktop shortcut on the desktop has on its own, the name, "chrome - shortcut"
Shortcut path: C:\Users\Admin\Desktop

Making the new shortcut into incognito:
Right clicked the desktop shortcut icon just made
Click Properties
Target field is already highlighted.  Press keyboard right-arrow button, press spacebar one time, type the word 'incognito'  but not use any quotation marks, click Apply and Ok.

The new shortcut to google chrome with the Target adjusted was tested and will open Google Chrome directly into Incognito mode.

Only thing now to do is try to rename the new icon to mention "incognito" and see if this desktop icon still works.

A:Adding new desktop shortcut icon for Google Chrome in Incognito mode on Windows

This is the same method described in the link I posted here.  I don't see any difference in the method you described above.

I have a e-machines desktop computer. It was storming last night and the power went out. I went to bed after that, and when I woke up today my computer was in sleep mode. So I turned it on and logged in, shortly after my computer shut itself down.

When I turned it back on, it said the "computer battery has reached it's critical, so Windows shut itself down, click here to resume windows" or something like that

It did this a few more times. Now I got the computer on, and it's been on for about 20 minutes. But the icon in the lower right corner of my computer says the battery is at 0%, and I'm afraid it could shut down at any time.

I'm a real newbie when it comes to computers, and this whole ordeal has me scared. I think I might have to call a computer shop or computer fixer, because I'm really dumb when it comes to computers and I don't wanna mess with anything. But the fact that my computer's been on for a good 20 minutes has me thinking maybe it's fine?

I also have Windows 7. And advice you might think could help, would be appreciated. Thanks

My computer does not start. I have an Intel motherboard D850GB, P4, 1.3 ghz, XP Home
The internal power supply seems to be working as an LED lights up when I turn on the computer. But nothing else happens.
My computer is 7 years old and my brother...who is no expert... wonders if the problem is a dead battery inside the computer.
Please help!

A:Desktop internal battery failure?

The battery your brother is thinking of is a shiny silver-coloured lithium button cell, about 3/4 of an inch in diameter, probably with a number something like CR2032. It powers the CMOS (BIOS) in your motherboard while the PC is switched off. In the UK it costs the equivalent of about US$5 and is widely available.
To replace it, you'll have to open the PC. Make sure the PC is switched off and disconnected from mains voltage.
You CAN damage electronic components with the electrostatic charge stored in your body, so first touch a metal part of the case to equalise your potential and the PC's.
Take care not to damage the battery-holder when removing the old cell and note which way up the cell is facing. Get a new cell with the same number as the old one and replace it in the battery-holder - right way up! Check that it's making good contact. I had one new motherboard fail to fire up because the battery was rattling around inside the holder.
Once you've replaced the cell, your BIOS will be reset to its default values and may need tweaking to restore the PC's behaviour to what you're used to.
Good luck!

I want to keep my lenevo g50 laptop ON all the time and I think this can damage the battery. I cant find a way to disable battery from BIOS so i removed the battery physically and kept it in a plastic bag. When I would need to make it portable I will plug in the battery again from there. I just want to make sure that doing this thing will be OK? maybe if i keep the battery like this detached it could loose charging power too. Other way which I have seen is to enable conservative mode which will keep battery from 55-60% all the time. I think removing the battery physically is better, please advise on this.

A:G50 laptop to use as desktop - remove battery

Hi Ali,

Welcome to the Lenovo community!

Yes. It is fine to leave the battery charging while it is being used. Myself and everyone at my company runs off full battery and keeps it plugged in all day. After 2+ years my battery is still fine and holds its charge for hours.

Most laptop batteries these days are Lithium Ion based - so constant charging won't hurt them.

Good tips for looking after a battery include:

Avoid frequent complete discharge of a batter as contrary to popular belief, this can actually put strain on a lithium battery.
Keep the battery and laptop cool. No hotter than 95degrees for an extended period of time.
Consider removing the battery if you are planning to work the laptop hard on mains for an extended period of time
Calibrate your battery and gauge by doing occasional (not frequent) full discharge/charge cycles
Lithium batteries degrade over time - when buying a new battery for your laptop, buy a "new" battery - not one from old stock
When storing the laptop unused for a long period of time, store it with some charge, but not full charge and do a calibration charge when you put it back into service. Storing at 100% or empty is bad for the battery. try storing at half charge or just below
Look into buying high capacity batteries rather than spares - this can often server better.

Let us know how you get on.
Regards,
Shashi

My computer has just started shutting down on it's own and when I start it up again, it tells me "Low Battery Alarm" and that I should change my batter or switch to outlet power. I am on a desktop plugged into a battery backup and into a wall outlet. I checked my power option properties and it shows to activate low battery alarm at 100%. I cannot lower the %. When I try, it just moves back up to 100%. I have all power options set to never go into standby or hibernation. Has anyone else had this problem on XP or got a suggestion?

Thanks in advance.

On a Dell Optiplex GX620 running XP Pro SP3 I am getting a Found New Hardware dialog box just after booting into windows that states that there was a problem installing hardware and indicates that it's a battery. The specific error is that "The data is invalid". I looked in the Device Manager and it shows a battery with and Unknown Device and yellow triangle on the icon. I uninstalled it and rebooted. Now no battery shows in Device Manager but still getting that Found New Hardware dialog box with "The data is invalid" error message. Any ideas?

A:Desktop PC trying to find a battery on boot

That may have a proprietary driver. Did you check the drivers at the Dell site? It may not be a specific battery driver, but a chipset or other one that includes it.
