"BIOS Corruption Failure" on HP Envy Touchsmart 15

Q: "BIOS Corruption Failure" on HP Envy Touchsmart 15

I had received my new replacement computer on Friday December 20, 2013 from HP, which is the HP Envy TouchSmart 15-J003CL Notebook PC.
Here are the following specifications:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03979017&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en

Anytime I receive a new computer, which everyone knows usually has extra programs that no one cares about, I'll reimage it with a clean copy of Windows. After re-installing Windows 8, installed all drivers and installed BIOS update. Keep in mind, this is coming directly from HP. After running the update, the computer restarts, and computer powers on, but no display.

Symptoms: Computers powers on, no display, power button lights up, wireless button lights up, ac power port lights up, and caps lock flashes two times, every three seconds.

I did research on the error codes. According to HP, this error indicates that it's a "BIOS Corruption Failure". What a coincidence.

The computer is under warranty, BUT it's already been inconvenience for me as it is. I'm trying to avoid having to send the notebook back, and cause more inconvenience. Is there an alternative method?

***I'm an experienced IT Technician*** I just need some guidance on how to perform a BIOS Recovery. Thanks.

Hi all,

Last night, my HTPC was happily working. However, the PC suddently froze and I had to manually force a shudown. Then, I tried to reboot and I got the following message:
"disk boot failure insert system disk"

I have 2 HDs and the BIOS and POST are not listing the HDs at all. I checked the cables but i doubt both HD cables disconnected at the same time anyway.

Any ideas will be much appreciated

Thanks

A:sudden "disk boot failure". Drives not detected by BIOS

Take the cover off the computer.

Blow out all dust.

Make sure that all fans are running.

Leave cover off, temporarily, till cause located.

Does computer now boot up correctly.

If not, reset the bios to default settings. Problem gone?

Hey folks,

My first post on here but I'm in serious trouble. I got a "new" (to me anyway) desktop running XP today and found the audio hardware wasn't working. So I pillaged an old machine for its sound card, and inserted that onto the motherboard. Also connected the Aux and CD lines to the top of the daughterboard.

Since then, to my horror, the machine has failed to boot. All plugged in, keyboard working, screen on and being used on another box for this very post. All I get now is the usual chirps from the internal soundcard followed by a few very low notes, definitely depressing so I guess they're suggesting something's failed. There's no further action from the CPU, the fan still works, but there is no screen output whatever.

Have I fried the motherboard without realising?!

Also, ironically, the last failure tone was delivered by my speakers through the originally non-responsive audio hardware!

I'd love a bit of help on this one, because my knowledge of computers' insidey bits is pretty poor.

Many thanks,

Joe.

The laptop does not boot, but the caps lock button blinks twice when I try to turn it on. I looked it up and found out that it means the BIOS are corrupted. I tried removing the CMOS battery and reinserting it after a few minutes, but it didn't change anything. I tried the instructions on this page: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833 but it did not do anything when I tried it from my hard drive. I was going to try it from an external storage device, but this model does not have a BIOS section on the driver and software page. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, TSG!

Just yesterday I was using the computer normally until I got a Blue Screen. Getting a blue screen is usually something normal that occurs to my every so often, so I didn't mind it and rebooted the computer normally. However, I got two more blue screens within the next hour. The 3rd time rebooting, my computer starts to act strange as if it had a virus. Upon powering up the monitor would just display a black screen with two lines about something --- which I don't remember, sorry --- and stayed like that unless I plugged out the power cord or held on the power button to shut down. Then when after a few tries it boots and displays a message "Floppy Disk Failure" and "Drive 1 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1" (and the same message for Drives 2 and 3) show up. Also it asks me to continue loading by pressing the F1 Key.

When Windows loads the first time, it displays a message saying a bunch of hardware has just been installed and ready for use. Also, my internal clock resetted itself back to Monday, November 07, 2005 (Which, if I recall, is the date when I got the computer) and my speakers do not work.

TL;DR Version
3 blue screens within a short time
Floppy disk fail
Drivers 1-3 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1-3

Anyway, I browsed through Google but I haven't seen anyone with both problems. I disabled my Floppy Disk Drive and that message doesn't show up anymore, but the others do and my computer still isn't fixed. I ran a vir... Read more

I was copying (cut and paste) data from one external hard drive (a 250 GB IDE Maxtor in a Adaptec USB enclosure) to another external (a 400 GB IDE Samsung in a Roswill USB enclosure). During the move. During this move, my Thinkpad T43p encountered a NMI Parity error, to which I'm still unsure what caused it, though I think it may have been my Dock II screwing stuff up. I did memtest 10 times over and my memory passed, so I am assuming its my Dock II. ANYWAYS...

So the NMI Parity error was a blue screen, and I restarted the computer. After the restart I noticed the Maxtor external hard drive was missing from my drive list, and in disk management it show as an uninitialized disk.

Okay, no biggie, I've dealt with this before. I tried using GetDataBack for NTFS, that failed to recover. Also failed were Active Partition recovery, Data Doctor Recovery, File Recovery, Restorer 2000, TestDisk, and ZAR.

I'm guessing my Master File Table is trashed and I can't recover it.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I purchased an HP Envy Touchsmart 23". It was used little over the three years. Last week, when starting up it started to display the message reading "Critical error/your start menu isn't working. We'll try to fix it next time you sign in". After several attempts of power off and restart, hoping the fix would happen, my HP simply stopped responding to the power on switch. The power on switch would light up indicating that the power was on, but the screen would not light up or indicate activity. Best Buy, where I purchased the computer, could not assess the problem locally - they could only arrange to send it to somewhere in BC, for an assessment that would take 2 to 6 weeks. Can anyone help?

Gps3, welcome to the forum. When requesting help you should always include the make/model (i.e. p6-xxxx) of the computer and/or monitor. This information is necessary for us to review the specifications of them.  Also, have you upgraded to Win 10?

I have been getting the BSOD since a few weeks and found out by trial and error that a USB-hub is causing the problem. Whenever I disconnect the hub before I shut off the computer I do not get the blue screen.
Yesterday I also got a BSOD that mentioned driver power state failure. After I had de-installed Ubuntu 10.04 (I wanted to see what people are talking about but did not really like it) that problem did not show up again, although I do not know if that is just coincidence.

I have enclosed the dump files as per your instructions and hope that somebody will be able to help me.
Thank you.

Entering the bios limits me to certain options. Is there anyway to access the other options? sorry, newbie here.

A:No "usb legacy support" "qfan" options on my asus laptop bios.

If your BIOS doesn't include such options, then they simply are not there.

I don't know about hacking BIOS's, and I wouldn't suggest it at all. You could brick your motherboard.

However, you should check with your manufacturer's website and see if there is an update available for the BIOS that may increase available options.

I have an HP Envy TouchSmart 20 AiO PC, and ever since I upgraded to Windows 10, I get the "POWER STATE FAILURE" blue screen every time I try to wake it from "Sleep Mode" and it will take forever to restart after a hard reboot. I have managed this problem by changing my settings so my computer never goes into sleepmode (but turning off the screen). Obviously, this is not ideal. I have been told this would fix itself automatically via Windows Update, but it has not. Please advise. Thanks!

I'm trying to find the settings called "ModemRingOn" and "PME Wake Up Event" both in bios but i can't find them.

Does anyone know where they are? Like under what options in bios?

A:Where are "ModemRingOn" and "PME Wake Up Event" located in bios?

BIOS's vary widely; there is no standard features that are included. It's possible your BIOS has neither of them.

If these are features you are interested in exist, the first thing to do is to check the motherboard manufacturer's web site's "support" page, and find out what the latest version of BIOS is available for your motherboard, compare that to what you actually have on your motherboard, and then read the change log to see if possible these features were added.

You can also research these features by Googling the text "ModemRingOn" and the model number of your motherboard "GA-XYZ123" in the same search, in order to filter hits that are limited to those that include references to both of these qualities. Look for forum posts, and other technical sites & information.

Also, look for the User Manual for your motherboard on-line. Sometimes these include information on the BIOS of the motherboard.

Dear HP staff / friendly members of the public, I recently spent too much money buying a new HP laptop. It was barely a month old when one of HP's updates turned it into a brick. I was being good - I wanted to update it to Win 8.1 so did as instructed by the HPSA; I made a recovery usb stick, made a recovery point in Windows, then started to update the drivers until  I got to the bios update. I had it plugged in, left the thing running, it shut down then wouldn't start up again. I thought it might still be doing something so left it for a good 20/30 minutes and thought, a bios isn't that big of a file!, so I turned it off and on again and lo and behold a brick with a black screen. A fan spins for a bit and there's a couple of LEDs on (orange wifi, white ones on front left side) but that's it. I tried power + Win + B to see if it would roll back and do a bios recovery - I've not done anything to the harddrive so if there was an HP_TOOLS partition somewhere when it shipped then it's still there. It gave me the capslock light flashing two times signal - a corrupt bios. I've tried different versions of the bios (within the last couple of days HP have changed the bios that's available for download - the've replaced F.24 (sp63210) with F.43 (sp65000). I tried and even got a couple of friends to try using the older UEFI tool and then InsydeFlash in the bios download to get the right bios file on a usb stick, but the program kept crashing and saying "BIOS did... But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

A couple days ago, I lost access to the networking tab of the control panel. I tried accessing it because as of that point, I couldn't load certain pages, so I thought I'd reset my wireless adapter, which has worked in the past for this sort of thing. However, by entering safe mode with networking, I was able to reset it there, and everything was working just fine.

This was about a week ago. 3 days ago, it says it needs to update windows. I do it, then turn it off for the night. Next time I go on, its preparing to configure windows. I, needing to get on ASAP at that time, restarted in order to avoid this, which has worked in the past with seemingly no problems. It boots up again, same message. Fast forward to several attempts of screwing around with safe mode with and without networking, and nothing has changed.

I give in and let it update, which ends up taking about 3 hours. I log in, and networking control panel is still messed up, and apparently now my copy of windows is no longer genuine (was purchased legally several years ago, no longer have the disc). Internet worked somewhat, with things like Facebook working, but not much else. I restart again, and it goes right back to the original "preparing windows" screen. Hell, I cant even access safe mode with networking anymore because I've started getting the message there too.

Hi Everyone,

I'm hoping to get some help. I had a power outage while my WD Elements 1.5 TB Hard drive was on. I wasn't accessing it but apparently that was enough.

I had a lot of important data on it but losing hope after unsuccessful attempts to use PhotoRec to get items off it.

It doesn't show as accessible in MyComputer but is detected. I've included what it shows under the "Manage" view of the drive.

I've also tried MiniTool Partition but it doesn't seem to be able to fix the partition. I've also tried Partition Bad Disk and it just shows the whole 1.5 TB drive as one bad block. It won't let me fix it either.

Does anyone have any other bits of advice? I'm at a loss as what to do. It seems the data is not recoverable. I can't figure out how to get it to show or even how to use it again.

Please see attachments.

I'm grateful for any ideas/help please. Thank you.

Windows Resource Protection frequently reports finding corrupt files, some of which it cannot repair.

I am able to fix the files using

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

followed by

sfc /scannow

But the corruption returns frequently (every other day, it seems!), and on inspecting the CBS.log file, it is apparently always connected with "utc.app.json" of Microsoft-Windows-Unified-Telemetry-Client, Version = 6.3.9600.17807.

This is on Windows 8.1 x64.

So my question is: what causes this, and is there a way to avoid this frequent corruption?

A:Recurrent corruption of "utc.app.json"?!?

It?s nothing to worry about. When Microsoft sent out update for DiagTracking (KB3022345), for a user to know when the time comes if his system is Windows 10 compatible, it causes a false positive in DISM and say?s the files are corrupt. If you have NOT run disk cleanup with Windows update cleanup checked, you could uninstall the update, but there is absolutely no reason to, as this has no effect on your system. It?s just in a comparison in your WinSxS files there was a hash mismatch.

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

When an IBM compatible computer is first turned on, the hardware runs a Power-On Self Test (POST). If errors are encountered during this POST test, they are usually displayed via an audio beep or in the form of a code number flashed across the screen. With this audio code in hand, you can determine what part of the system is having problems and find a solution.

<small>The pattern of beeps whether its the number of beeps or the length of those beeps will give you an indication of the actual problem. Its a distress signal from the computer in a morse code like pattern. Unless you have a diagnostic card to tell you more about the particular problem, you will have to use the charts below to decipher the computer error and get your machine back up and running.

If I am logging in without setting password, and I am logging in network with "Public" profile, then will any other user, who can see my computer, be able to enter my computer and check the contents on my computer ?

I am connecting to a network and there are 6 other users connected to this network. In the set network location window, if I select the netwoek as "Home", does it mean that other 6 users will not be able to see my computer on network and if I use "Public", then all other six users will be able to see my computer on network ?

Ok so I'm using a custom visual style made by another user however I don't really like the buttons used that I mentioned above. The creator states it is acceptable to change the theme to however you like as long as you don't redistribute it anywhere.

Ok so I opened up the .msstyles file (using Restorator) located in the theme folder of this VS. I went into the images directory and located what seems to be the images used for the buttons. Intuitively, it seems like it would make sense to replace those images with different ones (perhaps from another visual style) and it should change them. However, would this actually work? Could the theme get messed up in some other way (like proportions or something if the new button images are smaller)? I don't know of any other way to change them that would be easy.

But I did run into another problem. For some visual styles I can't even locate those buttons in the images directory. Where else would they be?

Hi everyone!

Yesterday my HP laptop (Windows 7) started getting BSOD with various types of errors (mostly "STOP: 0x00000F4", "STOP: 0x0000007A", "c00021a" and one "missing %hs, c0000135"). Most of the time it restarts without any issues and works fine right after the BSOD and then an hour or two later I get a BSOD again.

I have tried restoring to Last Known Good Configuration, startup repair, hard disk check, virus scans and I also uninstalled any recently added programs I could think of and cleared up more than 50% of my hard disk space. None of these seem to have helped and I still get BSOD regularly.

I have attached the folder from the SF Diagnostic Tool and would appreciate any advice!
Thank you!

Hi all,

So I'm kind of stuck.. I currently have the problem where I am in an endless cycle of "loading files" -> "Windows Boot Manager" (see: How To Boot Into Safe Mode On Windows 8 (The Easy Way)).
I have tried to load all of the options -- and none successfully load.
I also end up at a OneKey Recovery as well.. unfortunately, the laptop does not have initial backup or user backup images.
I have a Windows 8 CD for repairing purposes.. however, I cannot load the BIOS/UEFI to change the boot order to load the optical drives first. I have also tried to remove the CMOS battery to fix it.. did not work. .
Also - Windows Boot Manager:
Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] -- does not load properly (leads to OneKey Recovery) Safe Mode (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Networking (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Command Prompt (doesn't load - tries to boot and load all files onto partition that is too small.. can't change partition?)

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hello guys, the last week I've been strugling with these nasty BSODs. At first I thought it was my HDDs as ntoskrn.exe somewhat hinted towards that from googling it. My HDDs have been causing a lot of trouble earlier as well due to their somewhat long years of service. However, I've recently reformated my computer and installed W7 on a brand new Corsair Force GT 120GB SSD hoping the BSODs would go away, they didn't.

I googled BSOD and I stumbled upon this forum and I thought I'd give it a try. I'm somewhat desperate, as I need my computer working for both work, school and amusement.

I've been trying to run Memtest in order to test my memory but without any results. I'm also currently running on only on 4GB chip instead of two, to see if the problem still exists. Also, without any results.

This is the second time I'm writing this thread btw, I was just about to post it and my PC crashed.

Here is my two logs + dxdiag (last crash didn't generate a log oddly enough).

Here is additional hardware/gear that I use:

Razer Megalodon 7.1 Headset
Razer Naga
Logitech G19
Logitech C920 (Webcam)
Corsair 750W PSU

My temperatures are also good. Both CPU and MB idles at around ~25. GPU's all good too. I'm also using a Corsair 650D chassi with dustfilters at both air-income so dust is minimal. On top off this, I use airpressure to clean away dust somewhat regularly and I also did exactly this 2 days ago when I reinstalled the pc.

You may want to reinstall the operating system.

Backupthe files that are importantto you before you reinstall.

The "New" installation will overwrite the current one

If you do not format your hard drive before the reinstall the installation should not harm your files (That's why I suggest backingup your files) and will speed up the installation process.

No, assigning them through WinExplorer menu does not work.
But this is another problem which should not discussed here.

When I type now one of the following alternative commands at the CommandPrompt then Win7 returns me something like:

Hi:

Looking for insight/advice re: KB3054476.

According to Infoworld, it was "Optional" in May, but I was not offered it then.
This week, it was offered as "Important" and "Recommended" (!), but only for one of my 2 Win7/64 boxes.

I have read the MS KB article, as well as THIS FORUM THREAD, the latter of which includes a report of a BSOD due to this particular update.

However, there isn't much out on the web about it.
And most of the discussion about it is overly technical for me.
And I am confused as to why it was previously offered as "Optional", but now is "Important" or "Recommended".

I don't *think* I "need" it (as I have no webcam on this box). And I don't like to tempt fate by fixing things that are not broken.

So, 3 questions:
Is it safe to install?
Is it really necessary/important?
Or would I be OK to hide it?
Thanks very much in advance!

A:KB3054476 offered as "Important"/"Recommended"/"Optional"

The status of updates changes with circumstances.
If an update isn't relevant, it won't be offered at all.
If however it's relevant but the related software is not apparently in use, it may be 'optional' - and gravitate to 'Recommended' or 'Important' if the related software is in use.
It can also be promoted through the hierarchy by MS depending on feedback through WU and error-trapped feedback.

If you have (and use) a webcam, then it's probably best to install the update.

hi,

OK, this is a weird one.

I wanted to move the "My Music", "My Pictures", "My Videos" folders to another HDD. I moved the "My Documents" Folder to this HDD without a problem but the others I accidentally set the whole HDD as the folder (if that makes sense). So now the music, videos and pictures folders are set to this HDD and dont have an actual folder to change the properties of. Therein lies my dilema.

If anyone can offer any advice on this curly issue it would be greatly appreciated.

First things first, thanks to all who can help.....

I need to programmatically make some adjustments to the Internet Explorer security settings. Most of these settings I have found but there are a few I have not been able to get a clear exact location for in the registry. I will be using a .BAT file to make
the adjustments on 100+ PCs.

Here is what I am looking for.....

Under the "Internet  Properties" found in control panel, under the "Privacy" tab there is an "Advanced" option button. When I click on it I get an "Advance Privacy Settings" options box. On it are several settings.
The first setting, "Override automatic cookie handling" needs to be checked in order to access the other options. I can do that by adjusting the DWord value of "PrivacyAdvanced" under the "Internet Settings" key in the registry,
"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet settings", to be specific.

What I have not been able to find are the registry entries for the "First-party Cookies" "Accept, Block, or Prompt" options, the "Third-party Cookies" "Accept, Block, or Prompt" options, and the "Always allow
session cookies" check box. Please see picture below....

I have seen references to the following settings as being where those options exist, but nothing that explains ... Read more

I have an asus m5a99fx mobo with windows 7 64 bit (retail version) installed in bios mode. Is there any way I can change the mode to UEFI without reinstalling windows?

A:Going from "bios mode" to "UEFI mode" with windows7

No. You will have to reinstall Windows. Unless you have a very specific need to use UEFI, leave it as it is. There are no real advantages in changing.

I have been using my asus laptop but recently started blue screening. When trying to shut it down the screen will go black, but the system lights remain on and it remains running, however irresponsive. It also began showing a blue screen with the warning "Driver power state failure".

Even after a factory reset this problem remains. Any help to figure out the problem would be greatly appreciated.

Good evening all,

I've googled extensively around the issues I am facing, and tried all proposed solutions, but none have worked thus far.

Symptoms:I have 1-2 minutes of freedom after booting, then I can no longer run new programmes. I also cannot close some programmes e.g. Skype. Tabs in Chrome spazz, flash player dies, and any new navigation ends up with an eternal hanging/loading problem.
Unable to restart/shutdown conventionally (I have to do it physically)
I get the error "Failure to display security and shut down options ..." when I try ALT+CTRL+DEL

Safe mode is absolutely fine, so I assume it's not anything hardware related (though please correct me if I'm being naive). My second drive which runs off XP, which I only use for storage now, boots fine and has no problems.

I have not installed any new drivers, programmes, or otherwise made any meaningful changes recently.

Solutions I've tried:Reset winsock.
Shut off all start-up programmes using MSCONFIG.
Run virus scan at boot-up, deleted 2 items (win32 installmate ... prob trojans? Was an .exe that I had downloaded but never ran).
Run Malwarebytes scan, deleted 1 fairly innocuous item.
Run full scan-disk check.
Run a SFC scan - no integrity violations.
No system restore points exist to roll back to (deleted by a virus, perhaps?)

I am totally stumped, and naturally thought that TSF's collective genius > mine.

Any help would be warmly appreciated.

Many Thanks,

G

My Alienware M17x suffers daily, random BSODs, I think most are Driver Power State Failures. These persist when I re-install my NVIDIA drivers (I even tried using Driver Fusion to get a clean install), but they do seem more frequent with the recent beta drivers. Maybe it's my Intel display drivers...? BSODs occur when starting programs, ending programs, in programs, and when I have everything closed. Random.

I'm open to the idea that it could be physical damage (if that's possible). My laptop shipped with a busted DVD drive, so if that's a physical issue, there could be others.

Changing my anti-virus from Avast to MSE was advised on another forum but made no difference.

A possibly-completely-unrelated symptom: my laptop won't boot (freezes on splash screen) when I have a USB device plugged in (like my mouse). Changing my boot order doesn't seem to fix this.

Thanks for your time and help! My warranty expires in two weeks but I'm in Africa so Dell won't send home support :P

Hey guys. Recently my computer's been having an infinite reboot issue, so I looked on various websites on how to fix said problem. Each website I went to directed me towards the alt + F10 method, but whenever I try to use this method it says "Please wait a moment..." for about 10 - 20 minutes then gives me an error report saying "ERROR: failed to copy napp7.exe to ram."

So far I've...
Tried to reset my CMOS to default, did not work.
Tried to go to Advanced Boot Options, laptop just kept restarting.
Tried to see if my D2D recovery was enabled in BIOS, it was.
Tried to use alt+F10, did not work.

I really don't have the time or money at the moment to buy a recovery disk (hopefully it can be voided), so I was wondering if
a.) Anyone had another troubleshooting tip.
or
b.) If anyone knew how to fix the alt+f10 method I tried.

Thanks in advance.

It looks like your recovery partition is corrupted. You never want to rely on the recovery partition, because if your hard drive fails, the recovery partition goes down with it. The erecovery manager should've prompted you to make the recovery discs when you first started up the computer. It doesn't cost any money to make them. Since you don't havbe erecovery discs, it looks like you are going to have to clean install Windows 7 (which I prefer because it doesn't have all of the bloatware that you would have if you ran erecovery) To cl... Hi.
I just installed a seperate soundcard to the PCI-E slot and switched the front panel audio cable from the motherboard to this new soundcard, so I could also use the front panel's headphone connector.
Now the front panel headphone connector and both of the USB ports work fine, but now during each boot, I get the "Alert! Front I/O cable failure" prompt and I need to press F1 -button to continue the startup process. Other options are diagnostics and BIOS settings.
I made a small test and reconnected the audio cable back the motherboard and the boot was ok(no prompt), so I'm pretty convinced that in this case the prompt is useless.
How could I disable this alert? I could not find anything useful in BIOS settings. I used the BIOS settings to disable the integrated soundcard, but it didn't silence the prompt. Obviously the main goal is to be able to open the operating system without use of a keyboard.
System: Dell Optiplex 390 SFFOS: WIN7 64bitBIOS: A11 (newest)Soundcard: Asus Xonar DGX
Thank you all for any tips.

Hello,

My mother has had the STOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure} fault on her Windows XP laptop. I've read through various forums, looked for fixes on Microsoft and the IBM website but no luck as yet.

This Microsoft article is comprehensive but I don't have the disks to accommodate.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

This post has good detail but still I have had no luck.
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/540528-stop-c0000218-registry-file-failure.html

I found an old CD that I labelled Microsoft XP Service Pack 2 (hoping that it might be the start up disk), I tried the steps in the Microsoft article with it but the laptop was not responding to it at all, each time it would lead to the blue screen detailing the fault

Are there any alternatives out there to fix this fault?

Thanks

Hi Folks,

I really hope you can help me, I followed the instructions to create the attachement.

What I know so far is that this machine has BSOD'd several times...The last 2 times a ultilty called BlueScreenViewer.exe says it's due to "Driver power state failure" caused by: ntoskrnl.exe

I checked event viewer for the time mentioned 6/17/2012 11:29:02 pm and it says there is system error "source:Bug Check" at that exact time

For anti-virus I have MS Security Essentials. For Spyware, I have Spybot S&D.
I use with Workstation 7 as a study too so it has hosed my VMs which is very disappointing. I would really like to root cause this to continue with confidence...

I know you hear this all the time...but... please help! I don't mind collecting info and checking into things, I am just out of my element a little here.

I looked throug the results of the permon report and it seems clean for the most part.

Thanks in advance,

Jay

Hello,
I recently encountered a sudden blue screened error message with the following error that was suggested to research: "Power_Driver_State_Failure". I have only seen the error once thus far, but I fear that I may see it again at some point. It forced a restart, and the rebooting process was rather slow.
My operating system is Windows 8.1, and I have a Lenovo Y510p ideapad (nearly 9 months old).
Is this a significant error? Is there any way to prevent it from returning again?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,

Hi Folks,
I am running with an ASUS Pro31 Series and Windows XP Pro. In trying to fix a problem with Microsoft Outlooks, I was frequently rebooting my computer (trying to access the SAFE MODE boot menu) and it has now permanently failed to boot and has the following error on screen:

"Missing Operating System"

I have tried but cannot seem to access the menu where you can select to reboot in "Safe Mode" etc. I can only access the BIOS SETUP UTILITY using F2 and the BIOS RAM EASY FLASH UTILITY using F4.

Using the recovery DVD I got as far as the three options:
- Recover Windows XP to first partition
- Recover Windows XP to entire HD
- Recover Windows XP to entire HD with 2 partitions

I stopped there because it is essential that I retrieve the data from the HD. I am not concerned about the laptop, just the data. Yes I am a dumb dumb for not backing all of it up.

This laptop was supplied to me by my employer, so I am not sure how many partiotions it came with etc. Is it safe to assume that the first partition contains the C: drive data?

Are there any fancy tools I can get my hands on - over the net or otherwise - to try to get it booting normally again?

If not, what options would I have for trying to get the data off the HD?

Also, why does is it that I cannot access the SAFE MODE start up menu?

It almost sounds like Windows became corrupted. As for data recovery unless I'm mistaken (and I might be) no data is truly lost unless the drive physically fails. I know of one program that should help with data recovery but I'm still learning about this topic.

If you are interested the program is: Recover My Files

Hi.
I sometimes get the "Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press Enter" error message when booting, but if I unplug my Logitech PS2 keyboard it boots up as if nothing was ever wrong. I can then usually plug the keyboard in as I reboot the PC and it works fine.
But there is obviously something wrong here! It's as if the fact that the keyboard is attached to the PC makes the PC think that there is no hard disk in the PC.
There are no flags in Device Manager and everything is identified correctly, as far as I can tell.
Anyone have any idea what the cause of this strange error message is?

I'm running XP SP2, and it's a Seagate 320 gig HD.

Any help would be gratefully received. Thanks for reading this, and if you need more info, just ask.

Hello,

I left my computer on and open this morning before I left for class. When I returned, I had a BSOD, which specified "Driver Power State Failure" (I did not copy down any numbers, as I probably should have). I did a forced shut down (held the power button) and then restarted it, where it fortunately works for now.

My laptop is an Dell XPS-15, about two years old. I have not had any problems with it until now, and the past week or so it has been freezing up. I downloaded the SF Diagnostic Tool, and the zipped folder is attached.

I am uncertain what action to take next. Could someone advise me in how to fix the issue?

Thank you!!

A:BSOD after sleep or hibernation - "Driver Power State Failure"

upload your MSINFO32.nfo file.
Click on the start button
Type "msinfo32" (without quotes) in the search bar of the start menu, click the resulting link. It will open the System Information window.
File>Save. In the "File Name" filed, put "MSINFO32" (without Quote), give the save location to desktop, and click the "save" button.
Give the time for processing, it will save a .nfo file on your desktop.
Zip it, and upload it following the instruction.

Sometimes I am unable to expand a video to full screen. When I hit the full screen command in the lower right of the video, it just "shakes" the video, but refuses to expand the screen. I suspect it may be something with the Adobe FP, but what?

When performing more demanding tasks, which I try to avoid, programs on my Windows 7 32-bit stop responding/freeze, and pressing CTRL+SHIFT+DELETE or CTRL+ALT+DELETE don't do anything until the system's had enough time to do whatever it's doing, after which point the screen turns black with just the mouse cursor, and, after a while, this error message pops up:

Failure to display security and shut down options
The logon process was unable to display security and logon options when CTRL+ALT+DELETE was pressed. If the operating system does not respond, press ESC or restart the computer by using the power switch.
[OK]

I hit OK, and the system comes back, but it's clear it still has freezing/performance issues, because the whole thing soon repeats again. I've found that, to fix it, even restarting isn't satisfactory, because doing so won't help the computer "forget" that it was overworked, so, instead, I shut it down, for no less than 15 minutes, then start it up again, and it acts fresh again. Then I have to be careful not to overwork it again.

But is there any way to help my Windows 7 take on those more straining processes? Googling "failure to display security and shut down options" surprisingly only gave me a few hits, and nothing helped.

Firstly you need to update your profile which says your OS is WinXP.
I am not sure what you mean by "demanding tasks"
The following site may help but I recommend you read right through to the end before trying anything:
http://forums.techarena.in/vista-security/771124.htm
I would also check your Event Viewer for comments around the time of the freeze.
Make sure You have up to date Windows 7 drivers for your Display card etc.

It seems to happen with more demanding games. Desktop, internet browsing and less demanding games it works very well, but during games such as Portal 2 or Skyrim it freezes my entire computer. When I try to ALT+TAB out it either goes to a blank screen or it just doesn't do anything at all. I usually have to force restart my computer in order to get it working properly again. Anyone have any ideas on what I should do next?

try this : Wagnard Tools then download DISPLAY DRIVER UNINSTALLER.
it ask you to reboot in safe mode when u launch the software, so reboot
then clean and uninstall your graphics card driver ,then install the latest one which can be found in the manufacturer website like nvidia, intel, or amd. or try this vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiAbYY9U998

Hello,

I am trying to help fix my parents computer which is getting 3 different error messages once the computer starts up.

In addition to these error messages, the computer will not allow me to view any photos.

First off the error messages...
When the computer starts up the following error messages come up:
Quickcam10.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150004). Click on OK to terminate the application.
This same exact error message appears for two other EXEs:
- msmsgs.exe
- KEM.exe

I read the following thread that sounds like a very similar problem, but the ways that the person had to fix is beyond my scope of knowledge so I'm hoping someone can help me out in a similar fashion.

The other separate (possibly related?) issue is that they can't view any pictures. When trying to run the windows picture and fax viewer, the following error shows up:
Error Loading C:\windows\system32\shimgvw.dll
The reference assembly is not installed on your system.

I'll start with fixing the application error EXE issues first on here and keep researching the picture issue in the meantime. If I find a resolution to that on my own I'll post back the response here for reference. If anyone knows what this issue is right off the bat that would be helpful too .

I downloaded and ran HiJack This to analyze the EXE issue and here is the resulting log file:

i Bought a new laptop DELL inspiron 3542 i7 model. I had problems with it like BSOD, slow perfomance and touchpad. I contacted dell and they replaced the Hard drive as well as the touchpad. But i was still getting BSOD whenevr i open the dell touchpad properties. So i uninstalled the driver. Also when i launch Crysis 3 the game freezes at the game launch itself and the touchpad stops working but mouse works and then BSOD. I uninstalled the nvidia geforce 840 m driver completely and installed the beta version but still i am facing the problem!! And the most important thing is that this happens only while i use my laptop on its battery. When i plug in the charger it never happens..i never see bsod while charging. Today i tried something..i was using my laptop with the AC adapter plugged in (charging) and then i suddenly unplugged it and my touchpad froze (while external mouse still working) and i got the error (BSOD) " DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE". Games like sniper 3, cod: ghosts works fine..but when i launch crysis 3 or GTA 4, i get the error..But when plugged in, all the games works smoothly. Please help me, i have bought this laptop just 21 days before!!
One more thing: Last time when i reformatted my hard drive(old one) this problem was solved..but with is new hard drive i have formatted it 3 times and installing windows but it didnt help me

Okay so I've just did a system image restore onto a brand new hard drive that i've purchased.
My intentions were to basically transfer everything from my old HD to the new one.
I had saved the System Image on an external HD.
I disconnected my old HD before starting up the system image recovery process because for some strange reason it wouldn't select my new HD for the recovery process without me having to select the old one too.
It went through recovery fine.
It booted into the new HD FINE.
I shut down the computer to reconnect my old HD and use it as a slave.
Then during boot it said something along the lines of "Having problems starting up" so it recommended that I go through this quick recover of some sort so I did, knowing that I connected the old HD it must've caused spme sort of confusion with the OSs?
After going through the quick recovering with the startup, it had me choose between OSs, "Windows 7" or "Windows 7 professional"
The result in goin into "Windows 7" was a message saying "Missing Operating System".
The result in going into "Windows 7 Professional as I logged in was an empty windows with blue wallpaper and a message in the corner saying that my Windows isn't genuine??!
BARE IN MIND THAT AFTER SYSTEM IMAGE RECOVERY I LOGGED IN THAT NEW HD PERFECTLY FINE AND EVERYTHING WAS NORMAL.

Please, what do I do to fix this.

A:System Image Restore Failure, "Windows not genuine", help please!

**UPDATE**

For the sake or resolving this issue I d/c'ed my new HD and just had my old HD connected so I can get back into my OS and somehow get somewhere with this from there.
It turns out that my old HD is the OS with the "Missing Operating System"?!
I'd done absolutely nothing to my old HD for this to happen!!
The ONLY thing I had done before disconnecting was performing a System image backup.
Lucky me hey?

**UPDATE 2**
My main concern here is that I would like to access my NEW HD.
My intentions for the OLD HD was to format it anyway.
The System Image is still in my external HD.

**UPDATE 3**

When doing the system image recovery I wanted to exclude the OLD HD because the screenshot shown would've happened for reasons unknown. If anybody knows what that means then maybe i would understand the problem. Maybe.
I now have both of my HDs deleted and unallocated.
So why is this message still popping up when I try to restore to my NEW HD?
For some reason it NEEDS to include my OLD HD but why? Can somebody please ellaborate?

Hello As the title says, I have this blue screen with that error, the strange thing is this error occurs every time when I'm not working the pc, for example if I leave my pc for 10 minutes or less without working on it, it crashes and restarts, so about 98% of the time it happens when I'm not working, but sometimes it does occur when I'm working on the pc.

I don't know much of what I should provide but I heard it's a good idea to include the files in the minidump folder and here they are:

https://mega.co.nz/#!60ohnCqS!9Pw38m...F18R7V-XrAONXI

I also tried to check the ram and disk and it says they're fine! also updated the drivers using drive booster 2 and still.

Also note it also can happen when it's in lock screen! meaning even when there're no programs running!

Uninstall AVG with its removal tool. AVG | Download tools and utilities. Remove Daemon Tools and follow these instructions for AMD OverDrive:
AMD OverDrive (AODDriver2.sys) is either a stand-alone application, or a component of the AMD VISION Engine Control Center. This driver is known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems.
NOTE: these symptoms were from the previous release of OverDrive. The new release uses the same driver name, but is dated from 4 November 2013.
Please un-install all AMD/ATI video stuff from Control Panel...Programs...Un-install a program
Then, download (but DO NOT install) a fresh copy of the ATI drivers from Global Provider of Innovative Graphics, Processors and Media Solutions | AMD (in the upper right corner of the page)
Use this procedure to install the DRIVER ONLY: ATI video cards - DRIVER ONLY installation procedure - Sysnative Forums

If the device (AODDriver or AODDriver4.01) remains a problem, open Device Manager, select the "View" item.
Then select "Show hidden devices" and scroll down to the Non-Plug and Play Drivers section.
Locate the AODDriver entry, right click on it and select "Un-install". Reboot for changes to take affect.

Sometimes the driver remains and continues to cause BSOD's. If this is the case for you, post back and we'll give further instructions for safely removing it.

Hi Amilaben,

Sorry for the delayed response.
I have analyzed your dump file and below has been provided the analysis for informative purposes.

According to the analysis, "NETIO.sys" is at fault. But, since this is a Windows component which is used for the Network connections, chance of it being corrupt are very less. New windows 7 install on one of my home built workstations. I have an appearantly random BSOD. It sometimes runs for days, sometimes hours. I may have multiple issues (I have not been around to see it). Usually I start folding at home (stanford project) and leave it when I am not using the terminal for CAD, CAM or FEA. I just upgraded to windows 7 for this build so I would fall in the noob catogory for windows 7 user. (example:I just figured out how to unhide all the folders). I am also not the only user of this machine so who knows what has been done in the last couple weeks.

The hardware is all the same as it was running xp with the exception of the harddrive (new Intel 520 240gb ssd) on a fresh OS install from new hd. Also the motherboard got a bios update. From the name of the BSOD I would guess my drivers need updating but between windows update, intel updates and EVGA updates I haven't found any that haven't been updated. I updated my forum computer hardware list if you need that.

Any help fixing this would be great.
