Issue with Compaq CQ61-420US

Q: Issue with Compaq CQ61-420US

Ok guys, this one has me hung up and I would appreciate some help. A user brought me their Compaq CQ61-420US laptop that they purchased from a pawn shop. At first the PC wouldn't even turn on. I ended up having to replace the power cord and a new battery and also had to replace the motherboard fan because it was not spinning and causing the PC to overheat. After I got the hardware part fixed I found that the PC had a lot of malware. I ran a scan and cleaned the PC up completely.

Now when I try to start the PC sometimes the PC will boot just fine and other times The PC just starts up but there is a black screen and the CAPS LOCK AND SCROLL LOCK lights flash. After I completely drain the battery and recharge it then it will fire back up normally. I've also tried different RAM but the issue still persists. I'm thinking this may be a motherboard issue but wanted to post on here and get some of your opinions.

Thanks for any input!

A: Issue with Compaq CQ61-420US

The Compaq Presario CQ61-420US (WA976UA#ABA) laptop originally came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Because that laptop was purchased at a pawn shop and contained the programs and debris and issues from its previous owner, it needs to be wiped out and given a fresh start.

The factory restore recovery disc kit for it can be purchased here.

Hi all, I'm new here, registered just to get help with my problem. I have a Compaq Presario CQ61-420US Laptop, it will be a year old at the end of April 2011. It has Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS. Never had a problem with it till now. I am planning on doing a memory upgrade (currently has 3.0 GB DDR2 PC6400 in 2 slots (1gb + 2gb), ordered a 2.0 GB chip to bring it up to 4.0 GB total memory)

Anyway I wanted to make sure I could do the swap myself so I unplugged the power cord, took out the battery, unscrewed the panel on the bottom of the laptop case, found the memory chips, took out both chips very carefully, undoing the tabs holding the chips in, took them out, inspected them, put them back in the way I took them out, making sure the tabs on the chips were lined up, maing sure the contacts were making contact. Put everything back together, ordered the new 2GB memory chip.

Today I went to power up the laptop, battery in and power cord plugged in and everything lit up like normal except the screen never came on, the power button stayed lit, the network status light stayed on, the power indicator was lit, two white lights were flashing at the same time every 5 seconds though, which is abnormal, one at the top right of the keyboard which I believe is the Num-lock light and one on the far left of the keyboard which I believe is the Caps-Lock light. And thats it, nothing ever happens it never turns on (blank screen) even after 20 min's. SO I held the power button down til... Read more

I've got it figured out, I just took the 1GB RAM stick out, since I won't be needing it once my new 2 GB stick comes in, and it booted up just fine, tested the same stick in both slots to make sure one wasn't bad and its all good now.

My computer model is: Compaq Presario CQ61

So recently the charger for my Compaq laptop has gone bust, and I need to know what charger I would need to buy. This has happened once before, and when I bought a new charger, the wattage wasn't correct for the computer, so that one broke too.

What I need to know, is the exact charger needed for this laptop, meaning the correct wattage for the computer. Links to websites where I can buy it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Can someone advise me if this notebook is suitable for the Windows 10 upgrade. I've been told that it doesn't have the correct drivers. I thought that new drivers would be installed with the upgrade? Thank you Jack

A:Compaq CQ61- 401SA ( Windows 10 )

Here's the specs: http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c01967531 You have the Intel 4500M GMA graphics and it is a T4400 Pentium dual processor.  Windows 10 does not have a built-in driver for your video chip. However, the internet and youtube are full of workarounds. I have installed Windows 10 on several laptops with that hardware and it will work but in most cases I have eventually gone back to Windows 7 which works better on that era of hardware.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Recently my fan in my laptop was extremely loud, and the laptop was getting really hot. I proceeded to vacuuming my laptop and dust came out of it.

Somehow when vacuuming my fan, it broke.

Now it does not spin, and my laptop is silent.

Within 10 minutes of running the laptop it turns off; when it turns back on it says it shutdown to avoid over heating...

Any ideas, do i need a replacement, and should i take it to a computer place???

A:Broken fan on Compaq Presario CQ61

I suggest trying to blow out more dust. Maybe a dust bunny is preventing the fan from spinning.

If that doesn't work, the machine may need to be cleaned more thoroughly (disassembled). If that doesn't work, you'd need a replacement fan.

Take it to a shop, if you can't do it yourself, and you know a place that you can trust. (Preferably not Geek Squad at Best Buy. I've read few kind words about them.)

Hi guys,

I've isntalled Windows XP Professional (32) bit on a HP Compaq CQ61-231TU Machine with the help of nLite.

I had been using Windows XP on same machine. But this time, I'm not able to find its VGA / Graphics Drivers for XP.

Could someone please help me on this ????

A:HP Compaq CQ61 VGA Drivers Not Found

Here is the support and software site for the Compaq Presario CQ61-231TU laptop.
You should add and save this site in your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can readily refer to it when needed.

The drivers and downloads section has drivers for Windows Vista and Windows 7, but not for Windows XP.
Did you downgrade that laptop to Windows XP?

That laptop appears to have either an Intel or a NVIDIA graphics device, so we need to confirm which one it has.
Go into the Device Manager and then advise the names of the entries that have a yellow ? next to them.

I have been experiencing this since returning to a regular non-usb headset, I cannot set independent headphones as default device, I have found a workaround by disabling Speakers and Headphones. I may just have to buy a new USB headset because this is driving me nuts. If Speakers and Headphones are enabled and sound is coming through my headset, minute i key my mic on Ventrilo it goes to speakers on my laptop.

A:Compaq CQ61 IDT HD Audio and Headphones

think i fixed it, disabling independent headphones worked, headphones play right without jumping ship to speakers

Hi,

I recently turned on my laptop and the screen was black. After a while when it booted up, the screen came on as normal and then flashed out about 10 seconds later. I can shine a torch on to the screen when it boots up and see windows and everything but it's obviously too dark to use. I replaced inverter and lcd panel but the problem remains...

How should I go about fixing this?

Several of these were blamed on ataport.sys. Some very old drivers need updating including your raid, storage, and others.

I would update the old drivers

The ownership of the above machine has been transferred to me.I wish to revert the laptop to the factory settings. The recovery options are not accessible. Not by uising the recovery manager accessed through the Windows interface, via the F11 options or through the startup screen.Windows 7 home premium came presistalled. Is there a means of obtaining the installation discs? The hard drive was replaced by the previous owner. Thank you for any help.

A:Compaq presario CQ61-415SA Recovery

HP no longer has any Windows 7 based recovery disks for consumer laptops. There is a 3rd party market for recovery disks.  http://computersurgeons.com/p-19931-windows-7-premium-64b-recovery-kit-599363-001-for-compaq-presari... That is not precisely your model but is AMD so the motherboard is the same as yours and would work. If you are a little more adventurous and tight-fisted, we can walk you through a "clean" recovery using an OEM Windows 7 install disk and the drivers found on this site.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

So my laptop's screen is black. I'm using my tv right now with it, it works fine hooked up to a TV. I've tried everything I know of. When the laptop first starts up, It flashes the red compaq screen, then goes black. Flashes the user login screen, then goes black 2 sec later. When I do the fn+f4, the screen flashes back on, everything looks cool, then 5 seconds later it goes black again. It's not just the light, it goes completely off. (Just on the laptop, external monitor works) I've tried restoring back to factory settings, recovery, and I'm not getting anywhere! I've even tried that black screen fix by Prevx. Oh and I also tried turning the laptop off, holding the power button, etc. It has windows 7. CQ61 I think is the model.
I wasn't really sure if this was the right place to post it, so sorry if I'm in the wrong section!

Hi,

My name is Alison, I was trying to fix my laptop and ended up making things a lot worse!!

I ran DBAN and during the process i realized i have no way to reinstall Vista Home Basic OS so i aborted the wipe after 10 or 15 mins into it.

Its a Compaq Presario CQ61. On the back of the L/T i have a sticker with a product key but when i purchased it i never got a CD for Vista. I dont have recovery discs either.

So like i said i stopped DBAN from completing the wipe however now when i turn the L/T on it says,

"NO BOOTABLE DEVICE -- INSERT BOOT DISK AND PRESS ANY KEY"

I tried doing System Recovery but the same message comes up... i also found a Vista Recovery online and burnt to cd-r but it stills says, "NO BOOTABLE DEVICE -- INSERT BOOT DISK AND PRESS ANY KEY"

Is there a way to copy a different version of windows OS from a different PC and make that a 'boot disc' I dont really understand what a boot disc is...

Im not sure what to do to fix this issue... any help or advice is appreciated if you could please explain with details that would be a big help to me.

Thanks in advance!

DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) is a low level format utility. Once you start this, it begins to wipe the drive of your OS. Stopping it in the middle is too late. If you had just run System Recovery would have set your system back to Factory Defaults, but DBAN deleted that too. You cannot copy an installed OS and put it on a different computer. An OS has to be installed from a boot disc (a disc that boots the computer if the OS can't)
What is the Vista recovery disc that you have? Boot into Setup (Bios) and change the Boot order to be CD/DVD rom drive First Boot Device, Save and Exit. Restart the computer with the disc in and you should see the message Press Any Key to Boot From CD/DVD.If it is a Vista install DVD then you can reinstall your OS. If not a Windows disc, you can try contacting your computer manufacturer and see if you can get a Recovery DVD for your computer manufacturer Or get a Vista DVD from Ebay or Craigslist.

Hi, Alison.

A boot disk is the hard drive which your PC boots from and starts Windows, but your hard drive has had the boot files and Windows (or some of it) wiped off it with DBAN. DBAN is used to securely wipe all data from a hard drive prior to selling it or otherwise disposing of it -- this prevents any data from getting into the wrong hands.

You will have to contact HP/Compaq and ask them if they can send you a set of Recovery CDs for your model.

Hello All,

I have recently purchased a Presario CQ61-410 US ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834107043) and am now trying to install Xp Pro on it. I am having major difficulties.

After a lot of googling, I found these guides ( http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Operating-systems-and-software/General-XP-Downgrade-Guide-for-HP-Laptops/td-p/83267, http://maxeasyguide.blogspot.com/2008/04/preparations-for-winxp-installation-cd.html). I tried both solutions to no avail; I would still get a blue screen after during the initial install. Then I realized I have the AMD chipset, and thanks to this thread (http://www.techsupportforum.com/f19/...en-422183.html) was able to find the Raid drivers, slipstream them with Nlite and begin. The SATA hard drive was readable, and the installation commenced.

Here, though, is the rub. I am able to get through the basic install screen (F8 I agree, partitions, etc) and through the first "GUI" install screen (Agree to EULA, "Your Screen May Flicker for a few Seconds" etc). However, after that install and when the computer restarts and goes to load XP, I get the XP splashscreen for maybe 1-2 seconds, then the system reboots. I have no idea why. I know the install I am using is solid (it is running tried and true on another machine), and I have tried making a second boot disk, but every time I encounter the same problem: splash screen for a second, then restart.

I am not concerned about the other dr... Read more

So you are trying to downgrade a machine that shipped with Windows 7 to Windows XP ? If so, that would have been a better title to the thread, as downgrades are their own special set of problems.

It also would have been a good idea to note that this is a laptop.

Given that, I am having difficulty understanding why you would need "RAID drivers" for a laptop. Does this laptop have two hard drives ?

The compaq support site does not list any XP-specfic drivers for the hard drive or hard drive controller.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...1166&sw_lang=&

Have you seen this area ?

Also I'm a bit skeptical of your Driver Genius Pro software, and am wondering if that has been involved in the situation yet, and if it's a possible cause for problems.

Is this HD parititioned, with the Ubuntu O/S on one partition ? If so, it would be better to get XP installed on a single-partition drive, then make another partition for Ubuntu.

nLite is sometimes buggy, and while it is solving one problem, it could be causing another.

A bad/buggy optical drive can also corrupt system files which can cause an install to go bad.

HD's can come from the factory with errors & bad sectors. I would run HDD Regenerator (from Hiren's) to make certain the HD is good.

Try re-seating the Ram. If that doesn't help remove the Cmos battery for a few minutes then put it back, it looks like a silver coin and should be visible near the ram.

I have to go wireless with my Compaq CQ5814 PC. I currently use an older USB wireless adaptor Linksys WUSBG54GSC ver 2 and I am using Vista drivers (XP and Vista are all that are supported), which seems to work fine. This computer had issues when I got it and had to have the MB replaced. The problem I have is when booting up the computer it hangs at the black Windows 7 pulsating logo screen. Sometimes it will stay there for over a minute then boot but more often then not it will start windows startup repair. I have talked with HP Tech support which suggested unpluging all the USB componites, the wireless adaptor is the only one. I unpluged it after shut down and when rebooting the computer did not hang (USB adaptor still unpluged). Is this a Driver problem or USB hardware problem? I suspect a USB hardware problem because I have used this adaptor on several windows 7 computers from several manufactures without experiancing this problem. I am thinking of replacing the adaptor with either a newer USB or an internal PCI-E wireless adaptor but I do not want too if I am going to have the same problems. I want to get this issue taken care of before my warrenty runs out.

I have a HP CQ61 laptop, this machine developed a fault in so much that the screen display was intermitent but would work if pressure was applied to the hinges, I took it to a local repair shop, they had it for 2 weeks and it has now been returned totally unworkable.

The position is now that the mains light and the battery lights show and the battery is charged

Pressing the On button causes the wireless light to flash once,

The screen is at all times black.

The people who have handled this [ it was fully functional as stated when they took it in ] the only

advice they have offered is 1] IT MIGHT BE SCREEN
2] IT MGHT BE THE MOTHERBOARD
3] IT MIGHT BE THE HARD DRIVE

It seems to me that the origonal fault may have been possibly a poor 'sllding' contact' or a broken connection cable between the board and the screen.

With respect to the problems I have inherited are there any "reset " points that have been disturbed,
if so where are they?

Any help and advice you can give will be gratefully received.

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP

If the monitor was working before you took it to them, I would return it to them demanding that they at the very least return it to the state it was in before you took it to them. (If they refuse I would seek the help of a consumer advocate group in your area.

If you connect an external monitor to it does the system work?

Hey there,

I have a Compaq model CQ61-313US, S/N CNF9418B8P. Made in '05.

Wasn't 100% if this was the section to post an inquiry like this, but I'm having a problem starting it up. When I turn it on, the screen stays black and the Caps Lock light and also the light next to "Altec Lansing" both blink together once every 3 seconds.

This problem started happening fairly recently, and to remedy it I'd take the battery out and unplug it, then start it with one or the other power sources inserted back in. Typically I never turn the computer off, I'll just close the lid. But occasionally it wouldn't start back up upon opening. Today marks the first day I cannot get it to start up no matter what I do. I've replaced the CR2032 battery on one of the circuit boards thinking it may be causing it. I'm not sure what to do next, and I dread taking it to Best Buy, as they will surely laugh at my 11 y/o dinosaur.

Thanks in advance.

Hello all,

My 92-year-old grandfather -- who lives on a little island off the coast of Maine -- has emailed me regarding a problem that he is having with his ten-year old computer. If anyone out there would be kind enough to offer some advice on how to fix it, it would be greatly appreciated. There are no computer shops on the island, but my grandfather has plenty of tools and has worked extensively with radios throughout his life, so with some direction I have little doubt that he can make the repair.

This is an unconventional post, to be sure, and I don't really know anything about his computer ... but I think he has done a reasonable job describing the issue:

Hi Chris!
I have a severe computer trouble that I brought on myself.
First I will describe the computer and it's programs.
It is a Compaq, Presario 1200,
at least 10 yrs old.
Along the front edge of the top it has three indicator lights at the
left of center and three on the right.

The ones on the left are operating lights of which one shows when
the charger is in and the left most one shows when the computer is
started up by the button which is in front of the screen.
The one between these two shows the operating conditions, I believe,
as it usually flickers in concert with whatever is going on.
The three on the right each has a "locked padlock" symbol.
For programs it has Windows 98, Juno V.4, Intel Create and Share
and some other good things.
Everything has been working good.

I am unsure as to where else i could post this issue i am having.

I purchased a Compaq Presario 1500 3 years ago, and about a year ago, the laptop turned itself off mid-use and has not turned back on since.

I have tried a new power supply, the power supply gives off a high pitched Beeping (yes, from the power supply) when i plug it into the laptop. Lap top still does not turn on.

I would love to just donate this laptop to the local community college, for their class to repair, and be able to use, however, there are doccuments I would like to retrieve from the hard drive first.

My questions are:
Is there any idea as to why the laptop shut itself off?
Is there a way to easily troubleshoot and repair it myself?
Is there a way to put the hard drive into another computer and retrieve those doccuments?

Any assistance is appreciated.

Bethy

Edit added: The computers I have access to if the hard drive can be moved is a Dell laptop, and two home built machines.

A:Compaq laptop issue

The power supply beeping would suggest that there is a short somewhere inside the laptop, a dead battery perhaps? Have you tried running the thing without the battery pack?

Whether you can repair the thing yourself, depends on the exact fault and your electronics skills

Yes, there are adapters that let you connect notebook hard drives to normal IDE cables. Also, you can buy external hard drive enclosures that accept notebook drives.

Hey there,

I have a Compaq Presario SR5113WM. The past couple days there is an issue of having to press the power button multiple times before it powers on and boots. Does this sound like a power supply issue? If so, does anyone know of any tutorials for a DIY solution?

Thanks,

Steve

A:Compaq powering up issue

It sounds like a power supply problem, or it could involve the start/stop motherboard circuitry.

If you have a power supply tester that is the easiest way to test a power supply. If not, you can test the output on each lead with a calibrated digital multimeter.

If you don't have a power supply tester, it's far easier just to take your tower to a shop and have the power supply tested. If the power supply tests good then they could jump a known good power supply to the motherboard to see if the problem is on the board.

I have people bring towers in for these tests quite often. Just to test the power supply is $10 and to test the power supply and the board $25. If you take your tower to a shop ask them beforehand and make sure their power supply tests the response time for the power good signal.

Hello,
I purchased a Compaq presario V3617LA laptop a couple of months ago which is running Windows Vista. Here is the problem I have been having:

It frequently freezes for several seconds and then shuts off. This seems to happen when it is attempting to load a web site with many images, though it often happens when only one or two applications are open as well. It is as if only a few MB of the 1024 MB are functioning.

I have run the hard drive diagnostic test, memory test, and did a system reinstallation as well with no success.

That is my main problem. Another minor question... how does one disable the function where touching the touch pad is equivalent to a left mouse click?

Thanks so much for any assistance.

I did find this though

Run and save Version 2.40A or later of the System Configuration Utility (reboot
between each run) and verify that the embedded SCSI Controller is identified as
"Compaq Wide-Ultra SCSI Controller," instead of "PCI SCSI Controller." If not,
run the Utility again.

Witch started to work at first cause I changed it from SCSI2 Compliant to SCSI1 Compliant. Thing is that I dont have the menu that it is indicating at all I have Embed compaq intergrated 32 bit fast scsi 2 controller P then I can change it to ether Scsi1 Compliant/SCSI2 Compliant/Aysnchronous
Thing is that the issue is still there.

This is my second battery I have purchased for my evo notebook. When I slide the battery in and plug the ac adapter in, the battery LED indicator will just flash. Compaq's tech support says that it should be a steady light when charging but says nothing about what it means when the light just flashes. I bought the first battery about a month ago from eBay and it didnt work. So i went out and bought an OEM battery and that didnt work either. The system won't power on unless the ac adapter is plugged in. If I unplug the ac adapter while the system is on, I will get about 2 minutes of battery time. But even then, if I go under POWER SETTINGS in the control panel, it still is reading ON AC POWER. So, i dont think its the batteries. Is it a hardware issue, driver issue, software issue? Is there some sort of configuration in windows XP that i am skipping? Appreciate the help.

Sounds like a hardware issue, to do with the charging circuitry of the battery in the laptop.

I am having an issue with a friends computer that I am currently working on. She ran the Compaq System Recovery that came with her PC. During the recovery she said it told her that her files would be safe and would not get removed. I searched up and down the computer and could not find any of her important documents and photos... the weird thing is that her computer is showing the hard drive is 160GB but it is still using up 42GB of that. I changed the folder options to view all hidden files and folders and system files, I calculated how much hard drive space all visible files and folders were taking up and it just didn't add up. I did notice that there was one folder in the C:\ drive that would not open... "Access Denied" and there was another partition (D:\) that was for the system recovery but would not let me view anything inside that partition. I will have to post the name of that "access denied" folder later bc I'm not in front of that PC at this time. Any ideas to where Compaq System Recovery might store those files? Or any other suggestions?

I have a Compaq Presario 5000. I would like to add a second hard drive. There is an available 3.5" drive bay available, but the hard drive will not fit into the metal sleeve that is installed in the drive bay. I don't have a large bay available, and I would need some sort of an adapter to go that route, in any case. The 3.5" drive bay is exactly where I need it to access the drive cables, etc., so I would much prefer to do it that way, if possible.

I've checked with HP/Compaq and Radio Shack and it appears that this is just the way it is. The Radio Shack service center suggested that I rig the drive in as best (using ties!) as I can while the Compaq service person was under the impression that the metal cage holding the primary hard drive had enough room to handle a second drive (not that I can see).

It doesn't make sense to me that this problem would not have been widely encountered and resolved. Does anyone know, for example, of a modified bay sleeve that I can purchase? Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks

A:Second Compaq Hard Drive Issue

Are you looking at the bay from the outside or actually with the cover off?? I'm not at all familiar with the Presario but you MAY be able to remove the whole "sleeve" from the actual mounting brackets; then again maybe not....just a thought

Hey, I have a Compaq Presario C300EA

I dis-assembled it to clean it (The dust and such) I have now re-assembled it and I now have a problem!

What I did was I took the Heatsink off and blew through it and then put it back on, I also took the power cord out and re-sat the connector. I took the Hard Disk out too and put it back after.

The problem is now, when I turn it on. It goes to post screen (Normal fans) then after when it loads windows it will get about 5 seconds in to loading windows and the fans will turn on up to full and the laptop will shut down.

I have had an overheating issue with this laptop (Hence cleaning it out regularly) but it's never done this.... Any ideas?

I have already re-sat the heat sink several times, im now leaving it overnight with no power at all to see if it will re-set it's self

A:Compaq Presario C300EA Issue

Sounds like the hard drive might be having a issue, whether the power isn't sufficient to it (bad re-seating) or it has a bad connection to the MB. I came to this conclusion since after the initial post the MB (BIOS) says "operating system, your are the captain of this computer now". Assuming none of the files in Windows got corrupted, must be a bad connection one way or another. Also, when you re-sat the heatsink, did you clean and re-apply thermal grease each time? If you didn't that could be the root of your overheating problem.

I recently inherited a little Presario 900 (laptop, of course). The little beauty works great, except at startup. I'll press the power button and the power LED will light up (HD-light flashes sometimes.), and there's a sound from what I think are the speakers, but nothing happens after that. So I'll hold down the power button to shut it down again, and repeat the above process several times. Whether its on battery or AC doesn't change anything, but I find it helps to leave it "on" for half a minute and then shut down and power up again, but even that works irregularly. Eventually, after a few minutes of this trial-and-error, the HD will spin up and the whole system works fine ever after... until it's shut down or hibernating.

Does this sound familiar? It isn't a really pressing issue; I get along with it as is, but if there's something wrong I'd like to see about fixing it, as well as ridding myself of the inconvenience. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

A:Compaq Presario 900 bootup issue

I have the exact same issue with my Presario 900.

It intermittently won't startup, the speakers click briefly, the screen stays dark and the Compaq logo won't display. If I shut it down and re-start it enough times it will eventually come back up.

Mine will also seize up just sitting there. Usually though, it happens if I move the laptop although I can't seem to find any definitive movement that always makes it seize.

I stripped the entire unit down and then re-installed everything. While I was there I cleaned up any grounds that I could find. The idea was that hopefully the issue would be solved by reconnecting and tightening everything.

When I re-started it it worked quite well for about a day. I was hopeful that it was fixed but it started doing it again :-(

I know these laptops have issues with the power cord jack but in this case mine's fine and I can't see that being the reason for the seizing. I'm quite certain it's a mainboard issue, probably caused by the case flexing when moved and thereby flexing the mainboard. I seem to recall running into a laptop repair person on the 'net some years ago that mentioned this was a common issue and that he could fix it. Regrettably he went off-line and hasn't been heard from since.

I know it's not the processor, the memory, the fans or any other common issue. I'm pretty certain it's mainboard flexing somehow/somewhere even though it occurs even when it... Read more

Hello all ...

I have had a Compaq iPaq 3636 since about 2000 and it has worked and still works perfectly, having required only one battery change in all that time. Of course it is a bit out-of-date, but its Contacts and Calendar is so much easier to use than my iPhone I have stuck with it.

However, I recently did a stupid thing: I allowed the iPaq battery to go completely flat without realising it. So when I reconnected it to my PC it restarted, but it's Partnership Name changed to WINDOWSMOBILE94, and a new partnership ("kas's device 2") was created. It was previously called Pocket_PC and its Partnership Name was also Pocket_PC.

I was able to get my 12 years of Contact data back without a problem - it seemed to contained within the iPaq memory. And my documents and spreadsheets had been recently backed up so they weren't a problem either.

However, I cannot now get my Calendar of Appointments back onto my iPaq from my Exchange Server (via Outlook is what happens, I think), and nor can I synchronise my Contacts with the Exchange Server either. All this had worked perfectly for years and years.

I thionk that the problems are to do with the fact that I cannot change the iPaq settings back to "Pocket_PC" so that I can reconnect to the original partnership - if I try to do so it immediately reverts to WINDOWMOBILE94, and then connects to the new "kas's device 2" partnership, which won't engage with my Exchange Server.

Hello everyone.

I have a working Compaq 5304 single drive system. I just tried to replace the 2G drive with a 8G drive (I don't have the cable to add the additional drive as a slave... not shops open at 12:30am. for me to go and buy one). So, I decided to replace the original drive. Went into CMOS settings (this stumped me until I found the answer on-line) but didn't see any HD information. Hmmmm.....

Pulled the new drive out and checked for jumpers. No jumpers for a single drive setup. Checked the original drive to compare and no jumpers. Put the original drive and went back into CMOS. No HD info. Booted the system into OS and no problems.

I have checked Compaq's site and no luck. I am stuck. BIOS doesn't show any HD info for me to change or setup/detect a new drive.

I don't know where to go from here.

A CLEAR pic of the motherboard front panel header is needed. Some OEM proprietary boards use a standard Intel front panel header (2x5 pins with pin #10 missing) and others use a 2x8, 2x9 or 2x10 header. Generally, the pins are marked on the board.

Also, what are the markings on the front panel connectors? Is the Power LED (generally marked PLED or PWR LED) connector a 1x3 or 1x2 connector?

So my sisters laptop's LCD screen just stopped working a few years ago and I'm not very familiar with innards of laptops so I just didn't bother with it and it's been sitting in her closest ever since.

Well I finally decided to get around to seeing what was up with it and I ended up taking the entire thing apart piece by piece. Not really sure why, just kinda felt like it. Before I took it all apart though I decided to see if I could plug in a separate monitor and have it work to see if it was a video card issue or not. It worked just fine so it was definitely not a video card issue.

Windows wanted me to activate it for some reason so I tried but my CD key was apparently invalid, so I said screw it and installed Linux, and then took it all apart.

My guess right now is that the LCD screen is just plain messed, or it's a cable issue, the cables looked fine to me though. I'm just posting here because I wanted to be sure I'm not missing something. I've done soo much wandering around Google for answers but there aren't many to be found except everyone else and their mom has had the same issue with Compaq's.

If it turns out the screen is messed then more than likely the computer will be junked, not even worth spending $200 for a new one. So if anyone else knows anything I don't about the situation I'd love to hear it because I'm stumped right now.

Thanks.

Well, I don't know if this thread is still active but here's my issue, and 2 questions.

1. Issue: 2 identical Compaq Presarios (SR5510F) from 2008 era. Both have had Seagate hard drives replaced with WD Caviar Green (under Best Buy 3yr Perf Plan). So far they have Vista 32 Home Premium loaded with all Windows updates up-to-date. Besides that, minimal identical software installed on both. BIOS is up-to-date.

One machine will properly resume from sleep. Green power button light comes on, fans come on high then immediately reduce to normal speed, video comes on, followed by HDD activity and all is well. This machine also had the original power supply replaced at the same time as the HDD. Apparently while in the shop, the computer simply refused to start.

The other hangs on resume (green power light comes on, cpu and case fans come on HIGH SPEED and stay there, no video, then no HDD activity - must hold power button in for 5 secs to shutdown, on restart it shows "resuming windows" and after a long boot, ends up where it left off before sleep. Aside from power supply and Super Multi DVD, both machines are identical in hardware and software and settings. Also, I did see this machine resume properly ONCE, out of probably 15 troubleshooting attempts. I am wondering if it could be the power supply. If the ticking time bomb affected both hard drives and one of the power supplies - why not the other? I have tried most if not all of the other suggestions in this article.

A:1. Issue: 2 identical Compaq Presarios (SR5510F)

Update: the computer that hangs after sleeping is at Best Buy's Geek Squad under warranty. They've had it since Monday and haven't called me yet... I paid for the 3yr performance plan so they can figure it out. I was hoping it was a power supply so I could get a new one. I'm guessing it's not that easy...

I recently just reinstalled windows and all of the drivers. One of the drivers requested to flash my BIOS. In the middle of flashing my computer turned off. When I turned it back on nothing will load. All I see is the load screen where it says press F12, F10, or ESC. Does anyone know what happened, and how to fix?

Thank you,

My friend called me up the one day and said her computer was giving a "fan broken error", and dropped it off today. When I opened the case I seen a lot of dust under the fan and inbetween the heat sink of the processor (AMD). I walked away briefly and my roomate decided to detach the fan, heat sink and processor (all one piece). I was quite upset because I simply just wanted to remove the fan on the top and clean all the dust and leave the processor in its place. I know some processors require a bit of strength to put back in, this one is a AMD athlon 64 processor 3800+. The only thing i did was put it back into the socket, lock it in place and continue to clean the fan and heat sink out. When I was finished cleaning everything out (mind you i had my wristband on to avoid electrical shock to anything) i plugged it all in and turned it on. the monitor says "no input signal.....going to sleep". now the computer runs, all the fans are running, HD runs, and im think the processor is running but not sure how to find out for sure. Im in IT right now and in the process of finishing a built computer so i know a bit about them. I'm thinking it could be the video card which is built into the motherboard. I just dont want to order a new motherboard if it could be something else. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your best bet is go to hp.com, click on support and drivers. Then order the restore disks. This will do the same thing and repair the restore partition. The disks will cost between 15 and 20 dollars.

Hey guys, this is my fist post here, so i appologise if im in the wrong place, just need some help with something. Basically I have compaq / hp laptop with windows vista, and the DVD drive is no longer working. After a substantial ammount of research I have found fixes including the upper and lowr filters in the regestry, which didn't work, and have even removed the drive to try to get it to re-install the drivers. After testing the drive itself in another laptop I can confirm it is in good working order.

After a while I decided to set the laptop back to the factory settings using the built in recovery tool. This didn't solve the issue either. I have tried to use bootable CD's in the drive on start up and changed the order in which the laptop boots up, but nothing seems to work.

When a CD or DVD is in the machine, it powers up (lights and noise), but the computer dosn't seem to respond to it in any way. Also, the drive dosn't show up in Device manager or my computer and there is no entry in the device manager for DVD/CD drives.

Basically what im trying to figure out, is if this is a motherboard issue of some sort, and also, if I was to buy an external DVD drive, would I be likely to have the same issue?

Any help you guys can give would be greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance.

Hey dudes, i was wondering if you could help me figure out what's going on here, though i might already have a guess, i'd like to get opinions as well as solving matters.

I'm helping my friend solve a problem with her laptop where her Compaq Presario v3119AU suddenly just stopped detecting the wireless card, even in device manager.

Now, we've tried reformatting, running it in linux or win vista and I've even gone so far as to take out her wireless card to test it in my laptop, and to test mine on hers only to get the same results, that the card isn't detected in her compaq, whereas her Broadcom Wireless works on my ASUS laptop...

I'm suspecting that over time of her using the laptop on the bed or so that the board has somewhat cook off... probably... any input on this? so far the only option i see now is to head it back to compaq...

hamsteyr, i'm sorry, this is first symptoms of northbridge dying(nv6150go). the problem is that nv6150go makes some disturbances in pci-ex bus,and thus preventing the wireless card from detection. well, you an try to update your bios, it may help. i had 10 or 20 cases like this in my repairing practice. 5 laptops were cured(completely?) with BIOS reflashing. the others - nv6150go/nf-spp100 replacing.

Hi

I have been given an old(ish) Compaq Presario C700 Notebook PC by a friend and whilst it appears to connect to my Belkin wireless router it cannot connect to the internet. My wireless network is located by the notebook but there is a red X between the "unidentified network" and the internet symbol.

I have tried to connect before and after reformatting the notebook but to no avail. I have looked at a number of threads here and tried a few things suggested for other people with a similar issue but nothing works. I have restarted the router numerous times as well but still no luck.

The PC I am using to post this is connected via the same router and is working fine so what am I doing wrong?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also not sure how to network the notebook and this PC as well.

Cheers T

I've been having several problems with this laptop recently. Firstly, its a Compaq Presario C700 with Windows Vista on it and 1gb of RAM. My first issue was with the DVD/CD room drive (which I still can't get fixed). Then, I restored the computer back to it's factory settings because the person my friend who owned this computer before me had a lot of adware and malware junk on it. After that, I was still having an issue with the D drive. For some reason, it was full but the computer was restored to factory settings. So, therefore, I decided to just reformat the drive because I figured that it was causing problems with the computer's performance. However, the computer still had performance problems such as the Windows Aveo Aero theme wouldn't load properly. That was all fine and dandy. As long as the computer was still running. I would get it all fixed as soon as I got the time and money. Now, all of a sudden, I can't even get the computer past the startup "Compaq" loading screen. This all happened today when firefox all of a sudden updated itself (which was weird to me) then when it loaded again a screen popped up asked me to download or cancel "system.exe". Before doing so, I researched and saw several claims up it being a virus. However, the every time I kept clicking cancel, it kept popping up. So I finally pressed "install" which was probably dumb. 5 minutes later the computer shutdown firefox again and all this windows kept popping up (whic... Read more

Boot into the BIOS (F10 at Compaq logo) and check to see if the hard drive is recognized.

While in the System Setup menu check the boot options and make sure hard drive is selected before Network boot.

You may have a failed hard drive that is not being detected in the boot order.

Then I realized I have the AMD chipset, and thanks to this thread (http://www.techsupportforum.com/hardware-support/driver-support/422183-xp-drivers-presario-cq-61-310en.html) was able to find the Raid drivers, slipstream them with Nlite and begin.

I know the install I am using is solid (it is running tried and true on another machine), and I have tried making a second boot disk, but every time I encounter the same problem: splash screen for a second, then restart.... I have an old Compaq Armada 3500 laptop that I bought years ago to help me through college. After that it kinda gathered dust a little until recently when I wanted to dig it back out and just use it to play a few games on and whathaveyou. It booted up fine when I first did it but it soon transpired that it was absolutely chocablock with viruses and spyware and it was running terribly.

So, on what now looks to have been a foolish move, I did a C: drive format in the hope of popping in a Win98SE installation disc and have it boot from that to re-install Windows.

However, now it won't boot up past the COMPAQ initial screen and a "602: Diskette Read Driver Error" or something keeps flashing up.

Is there any way to get into the BIOS settings to set the CD Drive as the first in the boot-up line-up, or are there recovery discs I can download that'll at least get me into DOS?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

A:Compaq Armada 3500 Laptop Won't Boot Up Past Compaq Screen...

Well you should be able to access the CMOS Bios by using either the delete, F1 or F2 keys (sometimes f10). Then under the Bios you should see the Boot Sequence and be able to change it from there. But either way, you should be able to get past the Compaq splash screen. Try setting your boot sequence and see if that helps.

My Compaq Armada 3500 won't boot past COMPAQ logo. It wont boot to Floppy or CD and I cant enter BIOS to change any settings. I have 2 of these laptops (I bought them both used). My other one had the same similar problem when I got it, but I fixed by removing the cmos battery for 30 minutes and rebooting after I put it back in without the HD in the case. It told me error 162 options not set, and date and time had to be reset, and to hit F1 to save the settings. I did and rebooted. It booted to my floppy Win98 boot disk fine, and then I put in a COMPAQ setup for portables and a DIAG floppy and set it up to boot to multi boot. It runs like a charm now for its size.
But the other one will not accept any of these options although it does tell me the same message after I remove the CMOS battery and put it back in as I did the other one. But when I reboot, it still doesnt see the floppy, CDROM or let me boot to bios to enter setup. It just shows the COMPAQ logo and says "non system disk, remove the disk and hit a key when ready." I have removed the hard drive, removed the CD ROM, and removed the floppy on seperate occasions to see if any of them were the problem, but no change. I took the whole thing apart, and put it back together hoping something would end up being connected to the problem, but it still doesn't change the problem. Next to selling it for parts, any ideas? Its in great shape, has a nice 13 inch lcd and good floppy and cd-roms, and 192 ram.

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)

If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.

However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.

HiI have an HP Compaq SG3-110UK desktop, and I would like to change the hard drive to an SSD. Firstly is this desktop compatible with an SSD drive - secondly what type of SATA connection would I need assuming I can? I would prefer to keep the original HDD for additonal storage, so was thinking of getting a power splitter and putting the drive in the optical bay, or the old HDD there (either way). Is this a possible? Are there any gotchas before I commit hard cash? Thanks for all your advice Rob

A:HP - Compaq Compaq SG3-110UK - Can I install an SSD drive

Hi, From the following link I don't think you have room for a second HDD unless you have to modify the 5.25" bay.     http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c02568761 Now back to your main question, yes, you can replace current SSD with a 2.5" SSD. Currently your machine uses SATA II (3Gb/s) but I believe you can't find any SATA II SSD around, you have to buy a SATA III SSD. You also need 2.5 to 3.5 inch SSD Mounting Bracket which you can buy at any good computer shop for under $10 (or few pounds). You have to work out how to put (physically) the old HDD back. Regards.

Reason is I'm fixing another person's comp and he uses a Compaq, anyway he has 2 CDROMS, a 750MHz Athlon, a few fans, the regular stuff, and a 250W Compaq PSU w/ 8A on the 12V rail. I'm not kidding. It works though, but he's wondering why he gets so many blue screens...

Hey, I recently put together a PC and I've been having problems with it since. When I initially built it, the specs were:

i7 920 2.67GHz
Asus p6t Motherboard
8gb RAM
500gb Sata II HD
ATI Radeon HD 3870x2 (the card with with 2 GPU's)
500W unbranded PSU
1 added 120m coolermaster fan

Shortly after I started using my PC there was a power surge that knocked the power supply out. I recently got a new power supply. A 650W Silverstone PSU that I thought was more than enough for this. The problem that would occur now is that the computer would restart during games and sometimes while processing/rendering videos in adobe premiere.

When I would enable the 'crossfire' option on my card (to enable both GPU's to work) the computer would no longer just 'restart' the entire screen would hang or the colours would go out of sync shortly after which I'd have to restart the computer. This having happened I assumed the problem was with the graphics card, not the new 650W silverstone I got. I upgraded to a newer card; Asus Nvidia Geforce GTX460 768mb. The specs are now as follows:

i7 920 2.67GHz
Asus p6t Motherboard
8gb RAM
500gb Sata II HD
Asus Nvidia Geforce GTX460 768mb
650W silverstone PSU

A:PC restart during graphic-intensive tasks. PSU issue? GPU issue? Mobo issue?

You've got Asus motherboard, hence the first thing I'll look at considering the issues you are having, is at RAM settings/voltage in the board's BIOS, these should be exactly the same as on RAM packaging, but even that doesn't guarantee that it may not be the issue, so basically you'll need to fiddle around a bit with settings/voltage in case default specs doesn't work.

You may also consider stress testing your graphic card using OCCT (including vRam). Regards

Turn it on it goes through the BIOS and starts up as normal. Once it gets to the Windows 7 introduction screen it freezes. It never makes it to the desktop screen.

What do you guys think? virus? HP problem? win7 problem?

opinions please.

thanks

A:Windows 7 issue? Virus/Malware issue? or HP issue? i don't know

Hi test the hardware memtest 86 + for the ram and seatools for dos on the hard drive if they pass ok then you could try a start up repair from your install or recovery disc.
download the pre-built iso zip from here Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool and burn to a disc unzip it first use imgburn The Official ImgBurn Website to burn the iso to disc Guide to using Memtest86+ - Geeks to Go Forums

Ok, I've checked a bunch of sites and seen people with similar issues, but none have exactly the same problems I'm having. I have Windows XP and frequently used ZoneAlarm, Spybot, Adaware and Spywareblaster. HJT did not solve this problem for me.

if I'm able to log in, safe mode or not, I get a RPC error that says the PC will shut down in 60 seconds 100% of the time
I cannot run/install antivirus because I get a "not a valid win32 application" message
cannot connect to wireless connection and shows error message when the wireless adapter loads (there's a spot for it next to the clock, but the icon's invisible)
sometimes reboots randomly without the win32 app message
sometimes goes to a black screen and then comes back, then showing a "system has recovered from a serious error, please tell Microsoft" message
shows a blue screen at startup saying win32/autocheck didn't work, then finishes startup through the login screen
cannot system restore because no restore points are visible before infection
So far, I've been able to keep the PC running in safe mode occasionally thanks to Run>shutdown -a. The disc drives weren't reading for awhile but I've gotten those to load again. I tried to uninstall my wireless adapter to reinstall, but I get an error message "InstallShield Engine (iKernel.exe) could not be launched. The RPC server i... Read more

Oh boy, that is a lot of issues, it would most likely take less time and effort if you just backed up your data and do a full wipe and reformat.
