Hp Pavilion dv4 strange issue, not taking charge

Q: Hp Pavilion dv4 strange issue, not taking charge

hi i'm haveing an issue with my laptop it won't come on or charge and its not the cord or the battery the power switch works and the hard drive is good and so is the ram any ideas out there i could use the help thanks all

A: Hp Pavilion dv4 strange issue, not taking charge

The power jack connector on laptops are soldered (internally) to the motherboard. If the solder connection should break, power can't be delivered (internally) to power the battery or run the computer.

You might try it yourself (see here) if you're comfortable doing so or you'll need to take it to a repair shop

I've got a laptop that out of the blue stopped taking a charge.

This is the third/fourth time this is happening, and since I'm not under warranty anymore doubt I'll be able to send it in.

When I first got the computer (a gateway cx210s), it was broken, and gateway refused to replace it. They would only fix it. They ended up replacing the entire motherboard.

Later from this point, there were several occasions where it would stop taking a charge. I sent my computer in, it was sent back and it would work. So I don't know the exact details of what happened to it in the past.

I was on my laptop last night with the charger plugged in, and all of a sudden it stopped charging. I took it to someone today, and they said the battery was bad since my charger was still putting out a charge.

Yet, from my previous experience w/ this problem, I checked, and if I put some pressure on the part that plugged into the laptop, it would start charging. (It isn't a reliable charge).

So I called gateway, I gave him my number, and he said that the female port was loose (I'm assuming this is what was wrong the last few times since he told me that was the problem so quickly/confidently).

So now I'm here for a third opinion. What do you guys think it is?
I'm NOT going to send it back to gateway. Because of the utter piece of crap they've sold me, I've probably spent the same amount of money in repairs as the computer cost. Additionally, my warranty... Read more

A:Laptop not taking a charge

From your clues, I deduce you have a bad connection as opposed to bad battery or charger. It is either the plug that is the computer end of the power supply/charger or it is the female connector soldered to the main board. The former is a cheap fix; but, the most likely is the internal female connector.

In my area, this is a 75- to $150 fix--at a competent shop.

I have had my laptop for just over a year, and so far it hasn't had any problems except I had to reinstall windows. The problem is that it now won't recharge at all, it stays at 63%, I have checked all the plugs and they all seem to work, I unplugged it and it recognised that the recharger is not plugged in. The problem is that it won't charge, It says plugged in and not charging. Does anybody have any ideas of what could be the problem or the solution?

thanks in advance

Recently my Pavilion 10-n000na x2 has refused to charge when the device is powered on. When I attach the charger to the USB-c port the LED indicator light stays white and does not turn orange (charging) and the power indicator in windows task bar shows battery power only and no AC power. When the device is powered down and plugged in it does appear to charge, albeit with increasing reluctance. Occasionally when attaching the power cord when the system is running I will get a windows device popup advising the the USB device I have just attached could not be recognised. This device is still under warranty and both the device and powere cord seem to be in good condition. I am unable to contact HP support as they are only available during hours when I am at work.

My HP pavilion does not take charging after 80% and sometimes the charging light starts blinking. It shows plugged in , not charging.

A:My HP pavilion 15 notebook does not charge after 81%

Have you tried a battery diagnostic either in the UEFI diagnostics (F2 as you power on) or in the HP Support Assistant running from Windows? Stopping at 81% seems like it may be a dead power cell in the battery. Can we have the full model number of the laptop and an idea how old the battery is? Original?

I installed a new battery today and the guy in the store said it wouldn't be fully charged. My computer booted up fine but they I got a warning that the battery was at 14%. I had the power cord plugged in so it should started charging but it didin't. I got my neighbors computer, similar model and I put my battery in his and it started charging so then I plugged in my power cord and it is still charging. So I know my battery is good and my power cable is good because they both work on his computer so there is something wrong with the connection where I plug it in or somewhere else in the computer. When you plug the power cord in the LED should light up but there is no light. Any ideas of anything I can check or do I have to take it in for repair?

HI There,Ever since I upgraded from Windows 7 to 10 my HP Pavilion x360 has been a complete wreck. Including charging and sound issues. I've been able to resolve the sound issue by using device manager and uninstalling the drivers entirely. I have done the same for the charging problem but to no avail-restart after restart it refuses to charge. This 2-in-1 tablet/pc was purchased about a year ago. And has only had problems since the upgrade. I do not feel comfortable removing the battery as the batter on this particular model is actually enclosed in the casing. As I mentioned I've uninstalled the battery drivers from device managers a few times. Is there:1. A way to get the battery to take a charge without removing it (i.e. troubleshooting site)2. A way to roll they OS all the way back to Windows 7? I've tried rolling it back a few versions but I'm still in Windows 10. Thanks for your help!

So my laptop has two LED lights, one in the front and one near the plug-in for the charger. Before it would charge perfectly and both lights turned on, then my charger broke and my grandmother got me a charger. This charger worked perfectly but the near-plug-in-LED light stopped turning on. Only the front one was turning on, but aside from that everything seemed just fine. My laptop requires a 120w Charger and the charger she gave me was of 65w. I didn't know this until about a week ago since suddenly during gameplays it would just randomly stop charging after about 5 minutes into a video game or after maybe 2 hours of just browsing and stuff. I went to a place to get it checked  and they told me it was because of the charger, etc etc. Now I bought a new charger and it's still the same, it charges (even though the battery icon says it's on 84% and doesn't move from there) but it suddenly just stops charging after a while again. The problem with it not charging is that my laptop gets extremely laggy and only lasts about 1 minute before it shuts down.Is it the battery? Please tell me there's another solution... Batteries are expensive. The reason I added so much detail to this question is because I don't want to leave anything out. Thanks

I have an HP Pavilion DM4-2070us with Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit).
The Wi-Fi network adapter installed is a Centrino Wireless-N 1000.

For the past four weeks it has taken "forever" (about 3 minutes) before the laptop can connect to the Wi-Fi network. Upon booting up, a red "X" appears on top of the wireless network icon (the icon with five
vertical bars) in the Taskbar. Approximately three minutes later the red "X" disappears and I have Internet connection.

I am current with Microsoft patches and I have even installed the most current Centrino Wireless-N 1000 driver that I could find at the Intel web site. (The HP support site was of no use...)

I have opened a command prompt as an administrator and entered these commands:

netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /registerdns
... and rebooted the computer. Things did not improve.

I have a couple of other laptops that are connecting to the same Wi-Fi network without problems, so I don't think that it is the router to be blamed.

What could possibly be the culprit of this sudden three-minute delay in connecting to Wi-Fi?

A:HP Pavilion Laptop Taking Forever Before Connecting to Wi-Fi

hello and welcome TB mate finding HP drivers is an absolute nightmare (par for the course) and this is the closest I can get to the Centrino adaptor I think this is a driver problem or the adaptor is on the blink. Usually if it means replacing the adaptor it is not a big job but having worked on Toshibas more than HP's I cannot say for sure but will have a look round.

Hi Guys,

I have replaced the battery of my laptop after using it on AC supply for about year after my old battery died.

I get this error message.
"The AC power adapter type cannot be determined
Battery may not charge.
This problem might be solved by:
Connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher."

But I am using a 65W Dell Adapter that I got with my laptop.
BTW, I tried the steps for disc AC >> Start>>Uninstall MS ACPI >> Insert battery>> Restart. This process did not yield any favorable results.

Please help!!!

A few days ago, I noticed some strange files appearing on my desktop. They have no extension and thus can't be opened with any application, and selecting and attempting to delete them gives me one of those "Could not delete, file is no longer there" messages. Refreshing my desktop and restarting the whole computer hasn't changed anything. Any advice on how to get rid of these? I've included a picture of the files.

A:Strange files that I can't delete taking up space

I'd try adding the letters tmp after the period to one of the files shown in your image and see if it can then be deleted. Not having an extension keeps Windows from knowing how to deal with it. By default known files extensions are hidden so I always set my computers to show them.

Hi there guys (and gals!),

This is my first post here on the forums and so I hope I have followed the correct procedure for posting.

Basically I have had my pc for about 3 years now and last December I decided to do a fresh install of XP SP2.
Everything went fine and I was happy with things until it started to slow down the startup times. At one time it got to 6 mins just to get into Windows.

Now I have been pretty ruthless in killing unneeded programs and as a result I only have Avast in the msconfig "Startup" file.
I cannot understand why things have slowed down dramatically, I try to keep a tight ship and have only 5 games installed on my PC (C&C3, CoH, AoE 3, Half Life 2 and GTA:SA).

I thought I could track it back to the install of some early updates that Windows Update wanted me to install (namely the .net framework) it seemed that after I installed this everything went on the go slow....

I'm not trying to be a whiny PC user but I would like to be able to turn my pc on and use it within a reasonable amount of time

I have tried doing a few HijackThis scans (and used the auto analyser), they turned up some weird stuff, but instead of killing them I thought it best to let you decide what I should be doing. please find the DSS Scan "main" file below and "extra" attached

Hi all, today I received my JBL Charge 2+ portable speakers which work fantastically out of the box with my Samsung S5 Mini. Unfortunately, that is not the case with my Lenovo Y50-70 running Windows 10  I can connect to the speakers but the sound stutters. Sometimes the sound is good but then it will start to stutter only minutes later again. I have installed the latest BIOS update and Bluetooth drivers. Also I checked that its not a microwave / smartphone / Wi-Fi device that causes signal interference. The speaker lies next to the laptop. I tried to run Bennett to check the Bluetooth signal strength but that does not work (signal strength: n/a). Any idea what causes the stuttering? Do you think its a hardware or software problem on my laptop? Or are the devices incompatible? (I didn't expect any incompatibilities as my Y50-70's built-in speakers are from JBL, too) Thanks in advance!

Hey there - one of my PCs has been running awfully slow for quite sometime and I suspect that there is quite a few things going on that is wrong. When you open up the task manager there is in insanely long list of things running, none of which I feel should be there. I tried running malwarebytes, which found a few things, but I think the problem is deeper than that.

Also, I cannot get DDS to run/open on the computer. I've tried multiple times and nothing happens.

I was searching around my computer and noticed that my (D:) drive was almost completely full despite the fact that I have no music, pictures, or files currently on this computer. So I did some investigating with WinDirStat (A program that some people on another forum recommended) and figured out that it was these weird files that are about 215 MB a piece. When you open them with Notepad it just comes up with a bunch of what looks like Chinese characters. I couldn't get a picture of that though, because it wouldn't load again. I am using a Samsung Laptop that is running Windows 7. I do think it is worth noting that I do run Eraser on this computer about once a week, the reason being is I'm not much of a computer guy and like to keep my life as separate from the PC world as possible, so I like to wipe my computer out often in case it ever gets stolen or something. (I've read about people stealing computers and then running recovery software and stealing info that had been entered into the internet and old pictures and stuff)

Hi all,

This is my first post here/first Toshiba issue after owning my laptop for about 4 years!

I have a major problem with my Equium p300-190, with a Li-ion battery pack.

This morning, there appeared to be an issue with my power supply. The charger connection would rapidly change from charging and then not charging every second or so.

This continued throughout the day until the computer suddenly turned off.
Now even when the charger is connected, the lights on the front of the computer do not register it as charging the laptop.

I initially thought this was a charger problem, but the computer turned off when on 43% power. I was wondering whether anyone can help me determine whether this is a battery problem, or a motherboard problem, as well as suggested courses of action.

Any help is really appreciated!

A:Equium P300-190 power issue - no charge

> Now even when the charger is connected, the lights on the front of the computer do not register it as charging the laptop.

Does this means that the power LED and AC adaptor LED don?t light even if the AC adaptor is connected?

In such case the new, good working AC adaptor should be connected in order to check if it?s AC adaptor or notebook related problem.

Just for info: I don?t think that the problem is battery since the notebook should operate properly using the Ac adaptor only. Even if the battery is removed and Ac adaptor connected, the notebook should power up?

So either its AC adaptor or notebook?s hardware problem.

i don't exactly know where the best place to put this tread is, or if this is even the right forum. But i'll make a post here anyways.

So two days ago my laptop was not able to turn on at all and so i checked the ac adapter and it was beeping so i got brought a replacement from Canada Computers.

So everything after here is with my new ac adapter:

Now it powers on but if the power is connected after the computer starts up then the ac adapter is beeping and the computer no longer receives power but after a random interval of time the beeping stops and computer is charging again.

However if i put in the power line before the computer starts the power line is beeping at first but once i boot the computer the beeping stops and windows shows the power as connected.

Also when i change the Battery Mode in the Lenovo energy management panel the power disconnects and the ac adapter starts beeping again and after another interval of time the power is recognized by windows again and the beeping stops.

As well if i plug out the power supply from the laptop and plug it back in it takes a random interval of time for the power to come and there is also beeping.
So is there anything that i can do to fix this problem.

I have been getting this weird charge discharge cycle on my Pavilion 15. I pretty much have my Laptop always plugged in. A couple of days ago it shutdown in a blink even though it was at full charge. Then it would'nt start even when I pressed the power ON button. It started after I took out the battery and put it back in. Ever since then its trapped in a cycle where it always shows "2 mins to charge" in the notification icon and a certain percentage. Then when the percentage hits 100 it stops charging and instead discharges gradually even though it's plugged in. When it hits 0% it shutsdown again and won't start till I take the battery off.  Can someone tell me whether this is a problem with the battery or the charger and how can I fix this. Thanks

Just received my new notebook and am extremely happy with it, execept for the battery indicator. The effective charge reamining, fluctuates by a wide margin, suddenly jumping from 4 hours remaining - to 3 hours - to 6 hours in a matter of minutes! The PC was left in idle state with no processing happening whatsoever. at 100% charge it shows 5 hours 6 mts of remaining time, as the charge drops to 97% after 5 mins of idle, the remaining time changes to 2 hrs 34 mins and at 94% charge after another 5 mins, it shows 7 hr 20 mins of remianing time! I called Lenovo service and after one hour of trying this and and that, they offered to replace the PC with a comment that battery takes 1 week to settle down and stabilise! I find that a bit out of the ordinary. My config is 710S, i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Windows 10, with Lenovo optimiser loaded. (The battery gauge reset, suggested by service is missing in this version - the service staff themselves could not find it).  Is anyone else having similar issues?

A friend asked me to look at his HP after Geek Squad couldn't fix it (most likely not cost effective for them to spend the time to fix it rather than can't).

When I got it, it came on and the screen showed a blinking curser and that was it. It wouldnt boot or do a recovery from the HP disks. I did a recovery in another computer and reinstalled the HD. Found the BIOS set for a PCI video card with a AGP installed, everything else looks OK.

When it boots I get the POST screen with no errors but there are lines vertically on the screen. About every inch across the screen there are two (one or two pixels wide) lines about 3/16" apart. They also show on all the screens except POST.

Windows started the setup process and I get to the screen where it asks for a workgroup or domain. There is a delay for a min. or so but I am never able to select anything. Then I get a message saying the specified workgroup is invalid and would I like to proceed and select it later. If I say no, after a while it just does nothing and displays this message again. If I say yes it goes to a screen telling me there will be a count down and the screen may go blank and the computer will restart. When it restarts this whole process runs again and I once again have to put in the key code and this all just repeats.

Anyone have any clues on this. I'll try another video card to clear the video problem but that doesn't explain how windows is acting.

Hi, guys,
I have a 6 month old notebook (I made a System report at registration) which behavior become very strange for last month. It starts with Wireless Optical mouse problems, which all the sudden stops working, though it was new. I changed it and the new Wireless Optical mouse works perfectly for a week, than it stops work as the first one. I checked out the drivers and installation, reinstalled it and from then on it works occasionally (freezes for 5 - 7 minutes, than it start working again. If I reboot sometimes helps, sometimes not). Once or twice a week my notebook freezes or gave me a black screen and die suddenly (turn off by it self). Daily have a problem with a moments which last for a half of hour or an hour when notebook became very slow and my Internet connection is canceled, though on the other MAC notebook is everything ok with connection.
I have to mention that my Fingerprint logon stops working about 3 weeks ago, too.
A week ago suddenly Win Media Player stops working: I can watch the files from You Tube, but I can not Open any video from my email (Windows Media Player encountered a problem while downloading the file), if I want to Save those video files than a strange file name appears, like: ?ui=2&ik=cef2abe873&view=att&th=135d34275757d88d&attid=0_1&disp=safe&realattid=3195784715838c24_0_1&zw&saduie=AG9B_P89Ducvp5nZO8ojqPtONisp&sadet=1331017804524&sads=bCnTjt4JgzOiaeiLj9D6xISoYOs&sadssc=1

So, my issue that ive looked everywhere for a solution to is this.  I was about to give this laptop to someone and I reformatted the hard drive to clean it up before doing so.  After this I went to dells site and loaded up the drivers for this machine.  All is fine up till this point.  Then I updated the bios to the newest version a12, and all went fine.

Well, later that day I needed to unplug the laptop and go to a different room and It just turned off after I unplugged it.  It wouldnt turn on with battery power either.  Plugged it back in and it loads fine but the battery is stuck on 36 percent charge and says not charging.  Now im getting a message saying the battery needs to be replaced as well, which is *** because I know that the battery was working just fine before this day.  Not only that why wont a battery with 36 percent charge turn on the laptop?  Its got the flashing red battery symbol when powered on with the ac adapter but without the computer on, but still plugged in, the battery doesnt charge or have any lights.

I have already tried the uninstalling of the acpi trick, as well as the taking the battery out while its running, or taking it out purging the power and reseating.  Ive tried all the common tricks to no avail.  Not sure whats going on but I know this battery was good, and it still says 36 percent but wont charge and wont power the laptop on.  Hope someone can help.

Thanks Gary

A:DELL VOSTRO 3500 BATTERY ISSUE (not charging and wont power on computer with charge) HELP!

First check:  make sure the BIOS (F2 at powerup) recognizes the AC adapter.  If it does not, the battery will not charge.
If the AC adapter is not recognized, try another Dell OEM adapter.  If that doesn't solve the problem, replace the DC jack:
And if that doesn't solve the problem, replace the mainboard.
If the AC adapter IS recognized, but the battery will not charge, unplug the system, remove the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Try again -- if the battery still won't charge, odds are the battery itself is bad.
If the battery is original to the system, it's about four years old - well past its expected lifespan.

Tried going in and changing the setup, but it keeps coming back with Yahoo. Very annoying! Tried running scan with McAfee and Malwarebytes, but even though they found things, it didn't help.

So, I have been running 8.1 pro for some time now. During the last 2 or 3 weeks, I started having a login issue.

It loads bios
loads windows fine.
I get to the login screen, and it seems to take forever to recognize internet connection. Gives me the little "!" over the internet.
I put in password.
takes about a minute to finally log in.

I have gone to start up in task manager and disabled everything. This does nothing.
I have changed from a live to a local account. Nothing.
I have not installed anything recently other then video drivers.
Internet seems to work fine while logged in.
Any ideas? Have all the most recent mobo drivers.......

Asrock z77 Fatality Pro
Core i7 3770k
Kingston X SSD for OS drive.

Anything else in my hardware does not really seem relevant.....

This driving me mad because I am attempting o OC my cpu and gpu and have to reboot a lot to dial it in.

Here is a really bad pic of what I am seeing on the login screen. It takes up to 3 minutes to establish coneection when it used to be almost instantaneous.

Here are some other things I have done.

updated router firm ware: no change
tried static ip: nodda
disabled all virus software: nothing.
diff enet cable. nothing

still having the issue......

I have done lots of searching, but have not quite found this same issue.

A:Issue with logging into Win 8.1 pro. Taking a long time..

Good efforts so far. Static ip is good, even if it didn't help your problem.

Could be rootkit. They affect startup in various ways.

As far as disabling antivirus/firewall goes, that cannot help. You would need to uninstall it to see if it does.

If you have any Himachi software, uninstall.

If you have any VM software, uninstall to test.

If you have Networx software, uninstall.

Hi All,
I have a little problem.
I have a msexcel workbook used for accounts which has many worksheets within it.
I have put a hyper link into the work sheet to take me to the main page which in turn has a link to take me back to my original location or any other spreadsheet within the worksheet.
*However - each time i use the hyperlink to jump back and forth to the worksheets within the workbook it takes me to the top line 'ROW 1.' I'm now on 2000 something and having to scroll down to my last entry.
*Is there something have i have done wrong with the code that keeps taking me to the top of the page instead of the last entry?
*Is there anything i can do so that when i open the spreadsheet it goestomy last location or entry instead of the top again.

I hope i have explained this well enough.
Thank you for your response in advance

Hi, I recently pulled my hard drive from a windows 7 machine and changed ownership (on winxp) of the hard drive so I could copy some files. Well now that I put the hard drive back in the windows 7 computer it boots, shows the windows 7 logo then black screen with a functioning mouse pointer.

I am guessing this happened because I changed the hard drive owner.

I tried changing the permission on the hard drive to allow everyone full access but that did not work, still won't boot. I also tried f8 and did a repair, but it did not find anything to repair.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank u so much.

Since you can access Safe Mode go again to 'Repair your Computer' and run it 3 times in a row,(reboot after each time)NO matter what results you get the first two times.İf that doesn't do it,and you don't mention any error messages or the like)you may be best served by simply reinstalling the OS,if you don't have any system images at the ready.

A few days ago I had some issues with my internet connection in games, I therefore searched the internet and posted in some forums for some help, I was advised to carry out a few tests with some software, since doing this it now seems that I have lost my user privileges/access to image files and certain software.

I am unable to open any image files on my PC as I get the following error 'Window Photo Viewer can't open this picture because you don't have the correct permissions to access the file location'.

I am also unable to open Google Chrome, and tried re-downloading it only to be prompted that I do not have permissions.

These are the things I have tried to resolve the problem;

- I have tried doing a system restore, this fails every time no matter which restore point I choose.
- I have tried doing an Anti-Virus scan to ensure there is no malicious software and the result came up all clean after a thorough scan.
- I have checked the security permissions on the files I am trying to access to ensure it is set to 'Full control'
- I have tried installing a 'Take Ownership' button so that when I right click on folders/files I can take ownership of them. I have tried using this on all the folders on my machine but still cannot access them.

Hello fellow techies,
I have a situation with my Compaq Evo N600c battery or something in that directions, so I need possible solutions. My laptop needs to be plugged in at all times, which makes it frustrating because its a portable laptop. If it becomes unplugged the laptop will turn off within 10 seconds flat. I fear that this will, if it hasnt already done so, mess up my electric circuits among other components. Can any of you suggest or recommend options I can use to diagnose the situation. I would like to find out what the problem is, whether I should buy a new battery or some component or prong that I need to replace? Thanks for the feed back!

A:Battery will not charge or hold charge?!?!

Yup, sounds like a battery problem.

First, make sure the battery has a charge. Most laptop batteries have a button on them somewhere you can push that will give you the power level. Alternativly, there should be a utility in windows or the BIOS that will allow you to check the power level.

If the battery has no charge and isn't charging, then replace it with a known good one and see if it will charge up when the laptop is plugged in.

If the good battery won't charge up, then there is a problem with your motherboard.

If the battery has charge but won't power the system, then there is a problem with your motherboard too.

If this is the case, then the best you can do is contact the laptop manufacturer and get them to replace the motherboard.

Hello I have an hp pavilion g6 2201ax laptop which was giving me a system fan related error and was shutting off after about 15 min so I tried to fix the issue by blowing compressed air through the vents to dislodge any dust build up but even that didn't fix the issue so I took the laptop apart and removed the heatsink and fan assembly and it seems that their is quite a lot of friction build up in the fan as the fan wont move freely when I tried to manually rotate it. So my question is that is their a way to fix this fan or will I have to replace it?
Thanks a lot in advance.

You will be better off replacing the assembly.

A link to your specifications:

A link to your Manuals:

A link to your Repair Maintenance and service Guide:

Look on page 23 Of the service and repair guide for the assembly part number that fits your system. Do a web search on the part number.

If replacing be sure to remove all the old thermal paste and apply new paste.

The right hand button on my "Synaptics Pointing Device" on my dv3 laptop isn't working. When I click on it, it does nothing. (This is obviously really annoying if, for instance, I want to open another webpage in a new tab versus new window, etc.) The left hand button, however, works, though acts funny when I start up my computer. If I try to use it as soon as it looks like everything is loaded on my computer, it doesn't work properly. Instead it draws boxes on the screen. But if I wait a minute, then the left click works correctly. I am running Vista. I have my touchpad set up for a right hander. If I go to control panel and mouse and try to switch it over to left hand (which I don't want, I was just trying to play around and see if I could get the button to work), my computer freaks out a bit and doesn't let me change it over. The touchpad portion is working just fine.

I have an issue with a HP laptop that I find annoying.

The laptop belongs to a customer's Son and he brought it to me because it ran rather slow and so, I looked at it and told him that some more memory and a nice SSD would be good for him, anyway, the main issue here is the silly Setup in the BIOS.

I went to the trouble of getting the NEWEST BIOS update from HP and installed it. He wanted to have Win 7 on it again and so I installed it from a USB drive and it went flawlessly but, after setting all of it up I added the Samsung Magician software for some performance tweaking. the first thing I cam across was that the software said that AHCI wasn't active and that it couldn't tell what type of SATA it was. I have posted a question on HP forum but I hold no great hope of an answer but, you never can tell??

According to HP the driver that is loaded by the RST programme is sufficient for it but, it's a SATA/RAID driver and that appears to be what is causing the issue with Magician. I have seen a few articles on HP's site about this issue and they say it is ok but, obviously it isn't. There is no section in the device manager for IDE/ATA ATAPI the driver is shown in the storage section instead. Which, is where, the RAID driver usually ends up.

I am worrying for nothing or? I find it strange that a laptop that can ONLY handle a single drive would be setup for RAID?? I have seen this same silly thing before with Lenovo and Toshiba where they used raid config for the HDD, but ... Read more

A:HP Pavilion DV6 AHCI issue

Pendaws the RAID term refers to the way the HDD is accessed.

AHCI - Advanced Host Controller Interface - this is a hardware mechanism that allows the software to communicate with Serial ATA (SATA) devices. It offers features such as hot-plugging and native command queuing (NCQ).

IDE - Integrated Drive Electronics - IDE is basically the "old" version of AHCI without hot-plugging and NCQ. (This is usually used during the Parallel ATA (PATA) era hard disks)

Now. AHCI mode and IDE mode -- what is it? IDE mode is to give you the greatest compatibility with older operating systems. While AHCI is as I mentioned above, modern version of the IDE -- use AHCI mode if you are running recent operating systems (Windows Vista+ and Linux kernel from 2.6.19+). IDE mode will allow you to connect older operating systems to SATA drives.

As I mentioned above, SATA is Serial ATA, and is the replacement for Parallel ATA (PATA) hard drives.

RAID - This is a storage technology where you combine multiple disks into a "single" unit, depending on the mode, there can be RAID-0 through RAID-6, and each with different configurations of the hard drive. I'll just explain the simple examples: RAID-0 which is striping but no parity or mirroring, this means there is no redundancy for data, If there is a failure on one disk, it will cause the data loss of the entire RAID array. Ex: You have 0110 as data to be written, 01 will go on Disk 1, and 10 will go o... Read more

I think it was a year or so ago now that for some reason my C drive managed to switch drive letters all by itself and I had to reinstall the OS just to get my computer to boot back up again. I don't think the reinstall was 100% successful. A lot of screwy things showed up in the device manager, and I had to manually reinstall lots of drivers in order for my computer to be usable again. I guess I just forgot about certain things because I never used them, but now I'm just trying to get my system back in order a bit.

I've been looking for solutions on this for a while now, but nothing seems to be working. My webcam is not being recognized by anything whatsoever. Facebook won't recognize it, Skype doesn't recognize it, and it doesn't even show up where it should in the device manager. I've tried downloading webcam drivers, new versions of HP QuickPlay, even drivers for 3rd party webcams. I've even gone to HP's website, looked up my exact model, but for some reason, they don't have drivers for a webcam, which is odd considering I'm looking a webcam as I'm typing this.

Any ideas?

I have an old Desktop Pavilion running 32-bit XP which I purchased in 2002 and I've recently started having BIOS problems. Two weeks ago when I booted the computer I got a blank screen with a cursor blinking in the upper left corner.  I restarted and used the F1 key to get into the BIOS set-up and I discovered that the boot priority had been changed.  It was trying to boot from my slave data hard drive instead of the master hard drive with the operating system on it. Once I fixed the boot priority, I saved the changes and exited and it started fine but soon this same boot priority problem started happening about every third time I booted the computer.  Sometimes the first boot priority pointed to "bootable cards" whatever that means. Most recently the problem continued and got worse when it didn't detect the master hard drive at all and I had to detect it manually in the BIOS. Can you tell me if the BIOS needs to be updated or if a virus could be causing this?  By the way my floppy drive hasn't worked for some time.  Thank you.

When I put my (admittedly old) laptop into sleep mode (while plugged in) it will appear to work, but when I wake it up, the screen remains black. It is awake, but the backlight does not turn back on when the CPU does. I haven't seen information about this being a common issue with this computer (although there are other Sleep Mode issues with it). A full restart fixes this issue, for now.

The AMD Radeon video driver would not install properly recently, so I got around to manually installing it a few nights ago. Everything else is working properly, and the Windows Experience Index actually went up after installing the new driver (for whatever that's worth).

It is an HP Pavilion g6 2090ca; Intel Core i5 2450M processor; 6 GB DDR3 RAM; Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1.

Is this a known issue with Radeon cards, HP laptops from that generation, or just a sign that my computer is on its last legs?

Hello everyone. I must say that I've been looking for a resolution for this problem for five hours straight now.

I've just bought a new laptop here in Brazil. It's an HP Pavilion dv5-2112br. It was the last one they had on the store, and it was in the shelves, so people often touched it, but I decided to take it anyway.

After I came home I came upon the log on screen, which by a divine miracle, I guessed the password, so I was able to access it. Inside I found lots of useless content, so I decided to format the laptop. Before the formatting it had the FN key working flawlessly, as well as the brightness control and stuff like that, though I didn't check the internet connection. After the formatting (now with 7 Premium) I noticed that the FN key doesn't work anymore, as well as the internet connection. I have a cabled connection, and when I plug the cable in the laptop it lights the cable up, thought it won't connect anyway.

I've tried downloading the updates through my desktop, putting them onto a removable media and then installing it via the laptop itself, thought anything worked so far.

tl;dr I need help on how to make my cabled Internet connection work.

I'm not sure of what information are needed, so I'll let you guys with only these, but I'll be glad on keeping you informed of anything you need.

Thanks in advance,

Hi all. I recently bought this HP Pavilion 17 refurbished by the Geek Squad at best buy. the laptop is nice except for the processor. its a AMD A8-4500M, and it either is overheating, or the fan is just overkill. all i have to do s open chrome, and the fan gets audibly annoying. im not one to get annoyed by fans since my desktop is always on, but the laptop is LOUDER than all the fans on my desktop. CPUID HW Moniter says the CPU is running at 57 degress Celsius! thats not even a hot temp for this laptop. can someone help? free to give more info if needed.

Hi everybody, I was working on my PC and suddenly I felt like the laptop got overheated it got restarted. I turn it on again and while it was booting up right after the loading screen my computer crashed and the BSOD error popped up for abuth 20seconds and it rebooted itself again. After reading several forums and all, I started my computer on Safe Mode and went to Device manager and uninstalled the display drivers. Now, windows automatically installed the missing display drivers and at this point I thought all will be fine now. But I was wrong, as soon as windows installs the missing display drivers and I restart the machine I start getting the same blue screen. So I formatted my hard drive and reinstalled windows completely but no luck I still get the BSOD. I sure hope someone can help me because I have tried everything! I am attempting to repair an old hp pavilion a320n desktop for a friend. They brought the computer to me because it just wouldn't start up. Sure enough, when I plugged it in, the power button on the front panel lit up but that's all. No fan on the power supply or the cpu, no beeps, no standby light on the motherboard...nothing. I inspected the mobo (A7N8X-LA Focus) and discovered several bulging caps (one of which was beginning to leak). I replaced the motherboard but to my surprise, I still had the same problem (blue light on front panel but absolutely nothing else!). I have checked the psu (Thermaltake 450w) and it is fine. I switched memory modules, I even tried another power switch and still the problem exists. I don't know what else to do. Does anyone out there know of anything else I could try? I am going crazy trying to figure this out! Thanks in advance

I have an HP Pavilion A535W with a power issue. First the computer stops and acts like it has no power. I replaced power supply and now it starts for a few seconds then shuts down.

I have completely cleaned the inside, CPU, power supply with dust off.

I have also removed all cables except drive cable with the same result.

It does not even get to show the BIOS start screen or the HP screen and stops.

Anyone got any ideas, cause I'm stuck.

My computer HP pavilion dv6000 running Vista has issues! It will not boot on battery power! It gets to the Microsoft Corporation screen and while loading it glitches. Now it's getting worse and sometimes it does the same thing when it is plugged in! When this problem happens it does start up repair every time and it does not solve the problem it gives an error message "Root cause found A patch is preventing the system from starting Repair action:System files integrity check and repair Result: Failed. Error code = 0x2" I have reinstalled Bios and ran a battery health check and it does not fix the problem.

Sounds like it maybe a bad battery. It sounds like its surging and has fried the adapter now as well. How old is the system? Do you have SP1? That might cause a problem, its unlikely but it could be.

Hello, Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. Welcome !   Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) is kind of Windows self-protection feature. If you received a blue screen error, or stop code, the computer has shut down abruptly to protect itself from data loss. A hardware device, its driver, or related software might have caused this error. What you describe could happen because of incompatible with Windows driver (most often) or because of hardware issue (rarely). Troubleshooting is a process of elimination of all possible reasons. From the screenshot it looks like software issue with the video driver. But to be in the safe side, let's test your hardware for issues first - just in case. Please, turn off your computer. Start it again by using the power-on button andas soon as you do it, keep hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap) - you will enter HP startup menu similar to this one:  Choose/Press F2 and follow the on-screen instructions to perform System test >>> QUICK test. More information can be found here>>>> It should check these components:    Battery check    Processor check    System board check    Hard drive SMART check    Hard drive short DST check    Memory quick check  Let me know the results of the ... Good evening all. We just replaced my wife's failing Apple iMac with an HP Pavilion Slimline computer. We took it out of the box today and set it up around 5 P.M. Shortly after setup, 5 crashes occurred by 10:30 P.M. Posted below is information from the crash log as well as the dump file. If someone can offer me feedback as to what the issue truly is, that would be great (based on debug, I'm fairly certain it's a hardware problem). I'll also attach the .dmp file for those of you more computer savvy than myself.

Hi there,

These crashes were all point to hardware. Please use these instructions to find out what that means and to figure out what to try.

I don't want to say this but the stop code is 124, which is hardware related.
You might want to try the following test to find out what is truthly the problem

My laptop doesn't want to use all of the available space on the screen. There is a 2-3" black area (no video) on the right hand side and a 1/2" area along the bottom that may be black as well. There is a graphics hiccup below the start button as well. I have reinstalled the graphics drivers, updated any other display drivers I could find and I've played with all of the resolution screen size settings numerous times. My mouse will not go into these black areas. It's like the edge of the screen.
Unit is running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit.

Hardware issue? Software issue? Any help is much appreciated. Brian

Hello,  I wanted to clear some issues about my HP Pavilion laptop, I have searched online and most things havent worked for me, I have realised that my wifi usually goes to limited connectivity when either I take my laptop off my lap and place onto my bed (perhaps its because the fans cannot push the hot air out because they are being blocked?) and when I put my charger in. To temporarily fix this I have been going onto the "Network and Sharing Centre" and disabling and re-enabling my wifi, however sometimes I have noticed that I disable it and when I try to re-enable it stays as disabled so.. I hope someone from the support team can help me out, thanks.

Hi, The internal harddrive of my hp pavilion 15-n278sa crashed so I just replaced it. Now, when I try to start the pc, it gives me a message saying that "the SMART hard disc check has detected an imminent failure", "Hard Disc 1 (301)". Pressing F2 for Hardware Diagnostics, and selecting "Hard Drive Check" just returns "SMART CHECK : NOT AVAILABLE" & "Long DST : NOT AVAILABLE" HItting return I get another screen saying "Boot device not found", I assume becuase I haven't installed an OS yet, and "Hard Disk (3F0)". I've tried inserting a Windows 7 OS disc, and a USB with an OS on it, but neither give me the option to install the OS. Pressing F10 gets me into the BIOS, where I was hoping to change the boot order so as to recognise the CD/USB, but I don't seem to be able to select any menu (eg. System, Configuration...) other than the "Main" screen I start on. I noticed this was the same with the original Hard Drive too. Without baing able to access the other menus I don't know what to do next. Is the hard drive faulty? I've taken it out and reinserted it once just to check it was plugged in correctly. Or do I just need to install an OS - in which case, how do I get into the other BIOS menus to do this? Pressing the <- and -> arrows doesn't work (nor do any other keys I've tried). Thanks for any help you can give!

Hello Ramz_N, Welcome to the HP Forums! I hope you enjoy your experience! I understand the computer is unable to connect to wireless networks consistently. It is a shame since wireless technology is amazing. On that note, I will do what I can to assist you! Before you do anything, I'm going to suggest you try a System Restore. This can return the computer to a point in time (restore point) before the issue appeared. Although, it may return the computer to Windows 8, which isn't a bad thing. For more information on how to do this, please look at this Microsoft website: Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8) Try using the computer in Windows 8 and see if it works properly. If it does, you can choose whether or not you want to re-upgrade to Windows 8.1. I believe this will resolve the issue, but please respond with your results. Thanks for choosing the HP Forums. Have a great day! Mario

I bought an Hp notebook AU003TX..Second day of purchase I found my notebook's screen flickering and it was uncertain,it occurs may be one time or two times a day. Called the tech support no they told me to ON it in BIOS mode and it. was flickering in BIOS mode also so they said it's an hardware prblm we will send an engineer.Engineer arrived and in first half hr he said there is no prblm bt after some time flickering occurred and he said there may be some problem.I demanded DOA BT they denied and said there is no hardware issue drivers has to be updated so I got it replaced from my dealer and the previous notebook when checked drivers were already updated. Now after 4-5days again the same issue was found in my new notebook. Now service people says window or drivers has to be updated and these are already updated. They took the notebook and after two days returned saying there is no issue however the tech support says there is hardware problem as screen is flickering even in BIOS mode. The case has been closed and the problem is not solved yet.

I have a HP Pavilion DV9715nr laptop and recently the sound has stopped working. When you look at the sound icon at the bottom right of the screen there is a red x on it and when you click on it is says "No Audio Device Is Installed".

I have uninstalled the driver and re-installed it about 12 times. I have tried different versions of the driver and every driver on the HP website for this laptop model.

Windows Version: Vista 32bit Service Pack 2
Sound Card: Conexant HD-Audio SmartAudio 221
