Rewriteable DVD not recognized - All other media recognized

Q: Rewriteable DVD not recognized - All other media recognized

My laptop does not recgonize DVD+/-RW. It recognizes all other media except rewriteable DVD.

Following are my specs
OS: Windows Vista Home Basic
Laptop Brand and Make: Sony Vaio N Series (VGN-N37GH/B)
DVD Drive: Sony DVD RW AW-G540A ATA Device
DVD Media Brand (which I tried): Sony DVD-RW

What I've tried:
1)Reached out to Sony support and they suggested removal of upper filter and lower filter as per Microsoft KB (
2)Uninstalling Roxio and Nero
3)Reinstalling Nero

I am attaching output of Nero Info, Error during the burn process, screenshot of Nero Info Tool and screenshot of Nero Express Essentials.

Not sure what is wrong where and sony support as usual is not helpful...
Please heeeellllllppppp......

A: Rewriteable DVD not recognized - All other media recognized

Your DVD player may not be re-writeable. Check your specs. Some players are read only and some are read/write. At least this will help you to the next step in determining a solution.

I just rebuilt an old system using Windows 7 Home Premium after using WinXP pro for many years. The primary hard drive is WDC 150 Mg and Win7 is installed and updated to current with SP1. I dropped a second WDC hard drive in, formatted and was going to use it for a 2nd backup unit. Both of these are sata. Both hard drives are recognized by Disk Management but when I select Computer on the start menu ONLY the primary 150 Mg drive is recognized. If I plug in an external drive, both Computer and Disk Management recognizes the external drive. How do I have Win7 recognize my backup WDC drive so I can use it.

Thank you

A:hard drive NOT recognized in computer but IS recognized in disk mgmnt.

Had similarities on my pc.

Goto BIOS, there you have 4 options.

Primary Master
Secondary Master

Primary Slave
Secondary Slave

Set it as follows:

Primary Master -----> Main Boot HDD
Secondary Master -----> EMPTY

Primary Slave -----> CD/DVD RAM
Secondary Slave -----> Secondary backup HDD
Hpe it helps!

I have a PC which is having a lot of trouble recognizing a USB data acquisition device. Starting from a situation where the PC *does* recognize the device, here is the basic pattern:

1. PC shows device in Device Manager under "Data Acquisition Devices".

2. If the PC is power-cycled via the power plug itself, the device is no longer recognized under Device Manager ("Unknown Device").

3. If the PC is power-cycled via Start Menu --> Turn Off, same results as above, no longer recognized.

4. If the PC is power-cycled via Start Menu --> Restart, no problems, device recognized.

When the device is not recognized, unplugging and replugging the USB cable makes no difference to the situation. In order to correct the issue, I disable and then enable via Device Manager (which also involves a restart).

This pattern is extremely repeatable.

I am working with WinXP SP2, Pentium, 2.8 GHz, 504 MB RAM.

This PC was returned from a customer site - the PC and USB device are used in a machine my company manufactures. Apparently this issue just started happening one day. We want not only to correct the issue, but in fact to understand the root cause and ensure it will not happen again in the future.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

A:USB Device Recognized / Not Recognized based on shut-down method

You could try reinstalling the usb drivers.
JohnWill has fix that is worth a try

Johnwill's solution

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG
-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]

-------------------------- Use text before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you'll have to modify the instructions and leave enough parts for those to function. I don't have one yet, so I haven't had time to modify the instructions.

I have an 8GB sd card i used while traveling and upon trying to get the pictures from it the computer does not recognize the card at all, no prompts, nothing. I have tried it in multiple pcs and macs and no response. My Cannon Rebel XS camera says no images found. However, when I plug it into my brother's Cannon PowerShot it actually recognizes and shows all pictures on the card. Does anyone have any reason why this is happening and how I can recover the pictures? I am not willing to just format to make the card work again, I must have these pictures.

A:SD Card not recognized in computer but recognized on camera

Have you tried leaving the card in the camera and attaching to the computer to d/l the pictures that way. I have an Olympus camera and the pictures will d/l fine with the card left in the camera.

Hello all. It has been a while since I've needed help but my run of luck has hit an ugly downturn. Moved my computer three weeks ago and had not plugged it all back together till last night. All these years I had used it without a password to log in but a few months back a tech friend expressed horror at this so I started using one. Last night no matter what I did it wouldn't let me log in, saying incorrect password. Today as I messed around again I went through the steps of asking it to reset password (even though I didn't have disc for reset) and realized it does not seem to be recognizing my internal drive. If one of my externals are on they come up but if I turn off externals I get a bubble that says 'No Drive. This feature requires removable media etc.' My drive seems to be running and the Windows logos do appear during boot. My keyboard seems to be functioning to type password, but when I hit F8 while rebooting I get no reaction, so cannot boot to safe mode, just goes right back to log in page. I have had mold/moisture issues in this new house but have had a dehumidifier running since just a few days after computer arrived here. However I do see some evidence of mold or dust in the case, not a lot but some. Not sure what the root of this problem is but I am trying hard not to panic. Any ideas?

A:Internal drive not recognized/password not recognized

Your tech. friend may have mis-understood when you need a password.
If you are at home and only you and you trusted family have access to you computer, there is no need whatsoever for a logon password.
The only time I have ever needed one is when I was using my own laptop on clients site when I was contracting and I would leave it on the desk over lunch.

I recently purchased the Samsung YH-999 portable media player and for the past two weeks i simply cannot make it be recognized by windows.I followed the instructions as described in the manual for the player install and wmp10. The unit charges and powers on and i can see the various menus as well as see the drive capacity. It doesn't show up in My computer and Media player 10 doesn't see it also. I checked various forums to find a solution and tried the solutions mentionned and still no change. I always have to tell windows what kind of device i'm installing. In Device manager it shows up as MTP device and the properties tab tell me that the device is working properly. I tried the registry fix of the Enum hive and giving permissions to read acces to the Everyone group. I also tried the sc stop and start umwdf in the run window. In the control panel under the portable media tab my compact flash card is seen in there and Media player recognize it .Thinking that something might interfering with the install of the unit i re-formated the windows partition (not quick format) and re-installed windows. At that moment there was nothing else installed and all USB devices were unplugged. I tried then to install it and still no result. I then added SP 1 and tried it and again no success. After that i installed SP 2 and tried again . The result was the same again. I updated the bios and also tried anothe USB cable. I also tried on my laptop to see if it would work but that ... A:Portable media player not recognized in XP

I finally brought the device to a repair centre in january and got it back this weekend. They changed the USB plug on the unit. They even left on the unit some songs, pictures and the video content on the install CD to show that it's working. I'm trying as best as i can to have it working with my desktop and laptop pc's but i still can't have it recognized by windows. Of course media player 10 doesn't see it .This thing is driving me nuts. I only get the mention that the MTP device is working properly in device manager. When i get to select which driver to install in the add hardware screen i have the choice of the one from the cd which is dated in 2002 and another one dated in 2004. I tried with both and still no results. As mentioned in my original post i have sp2 installed and tried various solutions for it like giving permissions to the everyone group in the registry. I disabled USB power management. If i can't make this thing work i think i'm gonna put it on sale on Ebay and let somebody else have the headache of making this work. The unit is working since they managed to install stuff on it . It seems to me that these kind of units either work with your computer or they don't. From all the posts i've seen on the net about these kinds of players i'm not the only one with this kind of problems. Frankly i will never recommend somebody buying one, they're not worth the hassle. I bought the unit in late october and as of ... Read more

Lately, when I plug in my CF or SD card to the computers media slots, I do not receive the familiar tone and they are not recognized. When looking under "Computer" they are not assigned any drive letter. I have tried numerous cards with the same results. And for the last year everything has worked fine.

However, if I leave the cards in the slots and 'Restart' Windows 7, then both cards are shown available and assigned a drive letter giving me access to all the photos.

So it kinda seems like some missing piece of the puzzle I just can't understand that is causing it to act that way. Anyone have any thoughts as to what I could look for?

Thanks. Jim

PS/ USB flash drives work fine when plugged in, sound tone, get assigned letter.

A:Media cards not recognized (kinda)

I think I solved my own problem. I uninstalled the drivers for the media slot then, upon reboot, it was recreated. Now working fine.

My HP Media Center quit working after updating with windows SP3. THen before that was resolved, I had a crash and replaced the motherboard and battery pack. Now my HP system recovery won't work so I had to buy another copy of windows XP media center 2005 to get the operating system up. It just loads as windows xp and I can't get it to load it as Media Center...not sure what I'm doing wrong. I read on the internet that certain service packs had to be loaded, but I get a message saying those can only be upgrades for Media Center computer. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I've done wrong? My next step is to reformat the hard drive and start over from scratch, but not sure that will resolve my issue. THANKS!!

All of a sudden I can't reliably play any video media on my Win 8 64bit computer -- was working fine yesterday and AFAIK nothing (other than perhaps Windows automatic updates) changed. My first thought was to try and restore but even though I'm sure I created a restore point it tells me there isn't one. Sigh.

Okay, so then I try to perform a reset (but keeping all my files) and it tells me some files are missing and to insert my recovery media. All well and good, I actually have that (and know where it is) but when I insert the disk it tells me it is NOT a recovery disk.

It is, of course, precisely that -- a Windows 8 Recovery Media for Windows 8 Products 64 bit. I am running an official copy of Win 8 (well, 8.1, but I have no media for that since it was a free update). Yes, it's OEM (Dell) but that shouldn't make a difference. What the !#!%$! is going on here? And, more importantly, what I am to do now?

A:Windows Recovery Media not recognized

Be very careful, a reset will put your system back to a factory condition and remove all your files.

You might try running the Performance troubleshooter to see if it finds anything related to the video problem. Could it be related to sound for the video?

Is this video media a file on your system, a special type of file, on something from online and streaming?

What to do? Thanks.

I have an old PC (Compaq Presario Desktop 7470 ) that i purchased from a yard sale. I removed the old HD and replaced it with a quantum 30gb at Lct 20 HD that had Windows ME OS on it. I booted the pc and it booted fine except windows booted up in 16 bit color. I shut down and booted again. same thing. i shut down a third time and checked BIOS settings, then set them to default. Now BIOS doesn't recognize the HD or the CD-ROM drive. I have checked all connection, reset BIOS, removed the CMOS battery, I literally have tried everything I can think of to get things going on this old PC, but I am at the end of my rope. I will say that scandisk will recognize the HD and says it is OK. I have also taken the HD out and hooked it up to another PC and it boots up Windows ME just fine. I have also tried every jumper setting on the HD and Cd-rom to no avail and the only drive that shows up in BIOS is the 3.5 floppy drive which will boot up a Windows ME Boot Disk. I don't have a problem installing a fresh OS but want and need the PC to recognize the drives before i can do that correct?
I am ready to pull my hair out!! Can anyone please help me?!!!?

A:HD recognized by scandisk but HD not recognized by BIOS

probably the booting sequence is wrong due to the fact that you told the BIOS to load the preferred defaults. If you have a standard BIOS:

*go to advanced BIOS settings.... your going to see a big list of options .

<< check this picture for visual example>>
*take a look at the first , second and third boot device and change them to:

1- HDD - 0
2- HDD - 1
3- HDD - 2

Alternate them accordingly.

**probably the reason why your pc booted up at 16 bit the first time , may be
because you haven't installed the drivers for your video card yet.

Hello everyone..
Yesterday my laptop pushed a new Win 10 update, and all went fine, or at least I think so.
But today I see that my Sony WALKMAN - which I used with no problem until now, can't be recognized anymore.

Basically it just shows as (E or Usb Drive E: but when I click it it says "Please insert a disk into E:/" like there is nothing there.

Now the interesting part is.. if I go to Device Manager I see it and clicking on properties etc t says it's working fine.

But if I go to Disk Management, the Drive shows as 14 gb of unallocated space and it's greyed out.

However, if I put it on my brother's laptop, it works perfectly and it can be opened, music moved into it etc - it shows as Healthy - Primary Partition in Disk Management. So it doesn't seem broken...

It's the same on each of the 4 usb ports btw. But, other usb devices (2 phones, 1 tablet) don't have any issue and are detected.

What could have caused this? I tried the basic Disable/Enable in Device Manager and also Uninstall Driver.. It doesn't do anything, it appears back when I replug it in.

No change in Safe Mode and no change after sfc /scannow

If anyone has any idea I'd be happy to try anything to fix this..

My HP DV6 is having...issues.  windows 7.  A bit of history: Recently (2 months ago) it quit installing Windows updates, and would download 3 everytime I shut down.  HP support could not help, nor did the Fix-It programs work.  Had to restore to factory defaults and that solved THAT problem. Recently tried reading camera card (which I have done before), but it did not read/was not recognized.  Today, tried to run a DVD, and when it didn't automatically start, I found out it isn't recognized. Tried HP Support Assistant, which told me the model # of the DVD drive I was using, then proceeded to say there was something wrong with the driver...and it couldn't fix it. More?  Explorer (windows, not Internet) will frequently time out or crash... I have Norton Internet Security with live update, and have yet to have any virus issues.  Any assistance or questions greatly appreciated!

To resolve this problem, remove the affected filter drivers. To do this, follow these steps:Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.In the right pane, if you have UpperFilters, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry. In the right pane, if you have LowerFilters, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

I have recently acquired a 64 bit Asus laptop with windows 7 OS.
Unfortunately I have tried to plug my usb HP pocket media drive model PD0000 but I get a message saying that it isn't recognized.

Thank you if anyone can help

A:USB HP Pocket media drive PDOOOO not recognized

With the drive plugged in, go to Start/Search and type devmgmt.msc Right click the devmgmt icon in the search results and Run As Administrator. In the Device Manager. If you see any devices with a Yellow mark or under Universal Serial Bus Controllers you see an Unknown Device, right click it and Uninstall it. Now unplug the USB HDD and restart the computer. A USB drive that is not recognized is usually due to inadequate power. If it comes with a Dual USB cable be sure to plug in both ends to the computer. Once the computer boots up, plug it into a different USB port, and not through a Docking Station or Hub as these ports are weaker. You should get a new hardware wizard. You may need an optional power adapter or plug it into a Powered USB Hub.

I have an older Dell machine that I plan to use as a backup server for my family. It has 2 SATA HDDs, 1 IDE DVD drive, 1 IDE HDD

The SATA drives are recognized in BIOS. The IDE-DVD and IDE-HDD are not. Interestingly, when looking at the folder structure in Windows Explorer, all the devices appear. When looking at "Device Manager", all the devices appear. Everything actually functions when windows boots up. Trouble is, when powering on, the boot -screen tells me the Disk-3 and Disk-4 are missing. Then waits for me to press F1 to continue, or F2 to enter BIOS. If if press F1, windows fires up, and all works.
Trouble is, I want to schedule this to wake up on its own, run back ups, then shut off. I am learning how to do that, that is not the problem. Problem would be for the auto-turn-on, to be stuck in the BIOS screen waiting for someone to do something. That's a no-go for my intended purpose.

I have dillignetly gone through the "Master/Slave" configuration of the IDE drives. The IDE-DVD drive is Master, with a jumper, and on the end/black connector of the ribbon cable. The IDE-HDD is Slave (no jumper) and is attached to the middle/grey connector.

I have gone into Control Panel and eventually get into "Disk Manager". Here I see something that is perhaps the clue but I do not know how to rectify. The following is listed (and/or shown in the graphic panel of Disk Mgr):
>Disk 0, "Bright Blue", drive-name, Layout=Partition,... Read more

A:2 IDE drives not recognized, 2 SATA drives recognized

You need to go into the Bios. The DVD cannot be Master. It has to be set as a Slave, if connected to the same PATA cable as the IDE, which would be set as Master. You could try the two on Cable Select. But you may run into problems, because of having also the two SATA units.

I have just purchased a Lite-On LH-20A1L dvd burner. However when I try to use any of the rewritable media I previously used with my old drive my burning software claims it's not rewritable so I am unable to erase it. I have tried Alcohol 120% and Nero 7.8.5 and neither recognizes it properly.

My curent configuration is:

CPU - Intel 6600
MB - Asus P5N32-E SLI

The new drive is SATA and the old was IDE. I have not yet tried pulling the previous burner from my old computer and installing it in the new one to see if that read rewitables properly but will do that next.

In the meantime does anyone have any recommendation on what else I could check?

My Dell was running fine until Sunday morning when I woke up to a blue screen on my computer stating that there was a disc error. Upon restarting, the computer would not boot windows. BIOS don't recognize hard drive (Seagate 7200.10) in SATA-0, but recognize DVD ROM in SATA-1. Therefore, I can't boot from CD. Problem is not the motherboard because BIOS recognize the DVD ROM when plugged into the master drive. SATA cable is also good. Hard drive is also spinning and getting power. Hi, not sure where to start but here it goes.

Dont know where to look for help/

A:Usb not recognized

When you plug in the flash drive does the light on the flash drive come on? Do you get any messages saying the drive malfunctioned or is not recognized? Is the drive seen in disk management (start -> run -> diskmgmt.msc).

Generally if the drive isn't seen on two computers (try a third one for luck) than the drive has failed.

I wrote an article describing common USB flash drive failures.

If you need the data you'll need to send it into a DR shop that specializes in data recovery of flash drives. Here are some tips for locating a Data Recovery shop specializing in flash drives:

1. Make sure they recover data on the NAND or PCB level, many DR companies that "specialize" in flash drives only recover deleted files.

2. Find out how much they charge if they can't get the data, anything more than $30, look elsewhere

3. If they can't get the data contact another company, it?s very very rare when the data is unrecoverable. I get many people who took their drives to another company who either didn't know what they were doing or didn't have the proper tools to recover the data. DR of Flash drives is a relatively new field, there are many inexperienced people.

4. Find out how much they charge for NAND & PCB level recovery, to get you in the door some DR shops will quote low prices however its only for deleted files or broken usb connectors.

I have 7 Pro 64bit 8GB RAM

After I deleted partitions and a full format on an internal WD Caviar 80GB hdd to use as an external hdd then copied & moved files to it. This is the problem it turned into.

After I put it in the hdd caddy, My Computer doesn't see it but Computer Management does. BUT it says it's not initialized. I've tried it as a Master & a Slave. It just will not initialize.

Tried it as internal hdd again and it works.

Does anyone have a solution to share that worked for them. I've been googling this and it seems a lot of people are having this problem without solution.

A:Hdd recognized but not

Have you tried to Initialize it through Disk Management? What happens when you try? Do you have copies of the data so that if its initialized and re-partition it you don't lose all your data?

Generally a HDD in a caddy/enclosure should be jumpered as Master or Single.

On Friday my computer was working fine. Then over the weekend a ghost invaded it and caused havoc.

I couldn't start the computer so I ended up booting into safe mode and choosing the last know good configration.

Now I cannot burn a CD. With audio CD's I can only hear the sound if plugged into the front of the Cd, whereas before I could hear the sound through the speakers. Otherwise the computer seems to read the CD, no problem. Audio and Data CD'S.

When trying to burn, Hotburn and Nero both tell me that I do not have a CD-R connected to my computer. I checked inside the case to ensure everything was correctly seated and re-installed the drivers.

Not sure what else to do now.

Hello everyone!
Yesterday I inserted a CD to install driver for my new headset. The CD-R open, close normally and I also heard the CD spinning. But not thing happened in my laptop at all. I checked This PC: no CD drive (before upgraded to win 10, I had installed win 8.1 and the CD dive was drive F). In Device Manager, there's no CD/DVD ROM section, even i had checked Show hidden device in View tab

I tryed every methods found online, but not fixed. Here's the details:
1. Try ALL METHODS in this link: [FIX] Optical Drives (CD/DVD) Icon Not Showing in My Computer Window - AskVG
-> nothing
2. Try to uninstall Channel 0 and 1 under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller. But as you can see in the picture above: there are no Channels under IDE...Controller. Tryed to uninstall Intel(R) 8 Series...Controller and rebooted, nothing happen
3. Try to update drivers using IOBit Drivers Booster PRO but all drivers are up-to-date.
Any helps?

Hi I'd first like to say I'm computer illiterate. I had a certain incident with my USB today and I was hoping someone could help.

I was just saving work on my 8GB Corsair Flash Voyager USB today and the next time I looked at it, it was no longer responding (blue light wasn't flashing either). I had it plugged into my computer, and the comp made recognition sounds whenever I replugged the USB in or took it out, but my USB is now called "Removable disk (F)". When I click it, it says "Please insert disk into removable drive", yet my USB is plugged in. I tried it on other computers and it didn't work either. When I go to properties, the Pie Chart says Used Space 0 bytes, Free Space 0 bytes. Is there anything I can do to recover my files? I never thought this would happen, so ever since my computer had a hacker, I moved all my files from seven years ago to now onto that USB. O_O I know, I want to shoot myself. But if someone can possibly help me, that would be great!

A:USB Not Recognized

Flash drives are very handy and have their uses.. And sorry you learned the hard way but NEVER use them as a trusted backup/storage of important files as they are too prone to fail. (IMHO use an external USB hard drive that comes with its own AC adapter is the choice) And even then always have two copies on physically separate drives (e.g. your hard drive plus the backup drive). As ANY device (no matter how good and who mfrs it, can fail. Is just a matter of MTF (mean time to failure) for a device)

That said: The fact it fails across different machine is not a good sign.

I'd suggest trying (on a couple different machines)

Approach #1
Unplug EVERY USB device from the computer. ONLY plug your flash driver directly into the computer USB port.

Approach #2
You require a powered USB hub for this (i.e. a USB hub that comes with its own AC adapter). This time ONLY plug the powered HUB (with AC adapter also plugged in) into a computer port. Then ONLY plug your flash drive into the USB hub

If all else, fails it will cost you $$$$ to find a service that will physically open the flash and remove the data for you.

Hi everyone, I have a problem with an A: drive. I have a gateway computer that is about 4 yrs old and it didn't come with an A: drive. There is an IDE connector on the Mobo and I took a floppy drive off of an older gateway and put it in this gateway computer I have...the computer is running WinME and when I boot up it doesn't recognize the drive. I went into setup and changed the setting to the appropriate type of drive and tried again. As the computer starts up I get an error that it is the wrong drive type?? In setup I switched the Floppy Drive A setting to 1.44/1.25 MB 3.5" and still there is no recognition. Am I doing something wrong? I used the FDD cable from the older gateway...the same one I got the floppy drive from. Any suggestions here guys or girls? Oh yeah, it shows up in device manager and when I click on properties it says it is functioning properly. ???? What am I doing wrong? Thanks again for your help.

All of a sudden my DVD burner stopped recognizing DVD+RWs. Checked multiple RW disks through both My Computer and Cyberlink Power 2 Go. Both say all of the discs are not rewriteable. I have uninstalled the 2006 MS driver, I have done a system restore to when the drive was working, even went into Registry and deleted the lower & upper limits of the device, per Gateway on-line tech.
FYI since I've had the drive I have burned nearly 500 DVDs. The last 100 were DVD+RW. I did have some intermittent occasions where it didn't recognize the media but putting it in and out fixed that problem.
Any suggestions? is the Device dirty or shot?

2-fold problem

after "cleaning up" his computer, his sound stopped working.

AFter trying various things, I finally purchased a Sound Blaster audio card and installed it and the sound is working fine...

However, His CD/RW DVD drive is not even recognized in Windows Explorer and that's the one he burns music to CD's with.

He purchased a $50 RealPlayer burning software and tried to install it (with the other CD rom Drive) but it never worked. He then thought it was because of no sound. I'm thinking he was trying to burn with the only recognizable CD drive, but it wasn't the one that writes.

Any ideas on how to get the PC to recognize the DVD Rom Drive Again?

compaq presario notebook 2500 DY721PA (Model)

I have an existing PC2700 ram mod and purchased another 512 stick. I ran just the 512 stick and pc wouldnt boot. So I replace old stick and all is ok. So I take new stick back for replacement but it boots notebook and tests out ok.

I've tried in other slots, swap around etc.

It is also a PC2700 module. What can I do to resolve this?

A:RAM not being recognized

This could be one of many things. Some motherboards will only take certain ram, and certain combinations of certain ram.

For example, I used to have a motherboard that although had 4 slots for ram, it would only allow you to fill those 4 slots and run the ram at its max speed if each stick was single sided (chips on one side). A friend of mines motherboard also has 4 slots, and will only allow him to run 4 sticks in his motherboard provided that he slows them all down to a slower speed. On top of those two examples, some motherboards (especially laptops) are more limited on what ram they will take, and on how much of it they can accept. I would check with your manufacturer and make sure that what you have purchased is correct. Keep in mind that just because your manufacturer says it is capable of 1gb, that doesn't necessarily mean 2x512mb sticks, they could very well mean 1x1gb stick.

I have a built in Cd-rw that came with an hp pavilion computer i have. I recently had to reformat it and i don't have the original disks that came along with the computer.

The Cd burner is a LG CD-RW-8083B. My computer just acts like the cd burner is another cd-rom drive and not a cd-rw drive like it should. I've already gone to the hp website and it recommended some firmware update which i tried out but it told me i have the wrong model. I have tried to find out how to get this thing to work for hours but my searches were fruitless. If anyone knows what I can do to get this burner working I would appreciate it.

We've built up a box with an ABIT BX6v2 motherboard, two CD-ROM drives, and two HDD, one 40GB and I'm not sure how big the second HDD is - both are Maxtor.

All drives are jumpered to cable-select. The two CD drives are on one IDE plug, the two HDD on the other. The C:\ HDD is intended to be the 40GB.

When everything was installed, we set the BIOS to boot order: C, then CD-ROM

Next popped in the WinXP install CD, and turned it on. Boot ran off the CD, came up and allowed us to format the 40GB drive and partition it, and the XP installer sees it as C:\. WinXP then copied over its install files and rebooted.

Apparently the HDD are not being detected. No matter what boot order I define in the BIOS, it appears to go straight to the CD.

I tried removing the CD-ROM from the drive and rebooting, then it fails and asks for a system disk.

I'm not sure what to try next in diagnosing/correcting the problem. I'd very much appreciate any ideas or suggestions.

Many thanks!

Dont do a quick formatt

Well, hello to all.

I'm seeming to have a HUGE problem. I've had a 200GB external HDD for probably a year now and it's worked great for me until just recently. I've noticed that once in a while, the HDD would lose power then restart and repeat that for several seconds.

After noticing this behavior I decided it was times to go out and get a backup means of storing my data. But, no sooner had I decided to backup my backup data, the HDD seemed to just die on me.

Here's what's happening from what I can tell. Whenever I power on the HDD, the USB system tray icon appears, but it no longer displays the little pop-ups about it detecting new drivers and all that blah. Also, the HDD no longer shows up in the My Computer listing.

I've done some other research on the problem and I found one situation similar to mine in these forums but the end solution ended up not being the one I needed. Their solutions were for USB devices that hadn't been used before. Meaning they just said to format/partition the disk and that should've done it. But, I definitely don't want to do that. I have many many MANY files I really NEED to keep.

If anyone can possibly help me I'd be greatly appreciative. I suppose if I can fix this issue, then I will definitely need a means of backing up the backup, or at least getting a more dependable means of storing data. Let me know if you need any more info. I'd be glad to help y... Read more

I have 2 x 512mb RAM units installed in my XP sp3 machine. In system it only recognizes 704mb ... why isn't that figure 1024mb? KISS principal please because I am very much a novice.

A:RAM not recognized ... why?

On many newer systems, with onboard Video particularly, there is a small fixed amount of video ram and a variable amount of additional system ram that can be accessed by the video as/when necessary and if the system can spare it.

So, you may have 64 MB fixed and 256 MB allocated variable for 320 MB total which leaves 1024-320=704.

OK, this drive has just crapped out on me. Was working fine for a year, started throwing errors today and now the PC does not recognize it. I had it connected via firewire, but switched to USB 2 just to see if that would work. The USB found the device and reports the device is working, but when I try to populate it through device mgr, it says not initialized!

So, I went to computer management and disk management. the drive is located, but has a red arrow pointing down on the drive icon and says it is not initialized. When I right click on it a window opens to initialize it but than throws an error stating, Incorrect Function!

So, I have run out of ideas and to be homest Im ready to launch this thing across the parking lot, but alas, there must be a remeady, I just cannot see it, so Im here asking you guru's with the voodoo to do that stuff which you do! Say that 3 times fast!

my old computer:
P3 866Mhz
Asus CUSL2 M/B
Maxtor 28GB HD IDE

Long story short my old computer was having some problems until one day it wouldn't turn on... I replaced the power source (which I though was the problem), and it started, but then I smelt burning, so I turned it off, and wouldn't dare to try it again... I think my M/B gave out in the end...

So I bought a new computer:
Intel Core 2 Duo
Asus P5k-VM All-in-one M/B
WD250GB Sata2 7200rpm HD

Now, since I still have some valuable info on my old HDD (some of which is backed up, some not), I tried to install it into my new system to no avail. My new HDD originally was recognized as the Master, but now isn't since I've tried to install my old one, but I can still access it and the computer works fine. However, my old HDD isn't recognized by the BIOS regardless of how the jumpers are set up (masters and slave etc.) and I can't seem to access it at all. I've even disconnected my DVD Drive and connected my HDD to the port on the M/B...

I'm fresh out of ideas...
Any idea how I can access my old HDD? I might use it for extra storage, but right now I just need to get to the info on it.

I had received a P3 last year and never really used it. I ended up taking the hard drive out and using it elsewhere. It was running Win2k, and yesterday I decided to use it. I put a blank HD in, a known good CD Rom as I was told that the CD Rom didn't work, I just put in my bootable OS and when I boot up it will not recognize it.

In the bios I have the 3.5 enabled and the Primary/Secondary drives set to Auto. When I boot I get the following:

PXE-E61: Media Test Failure, Check Cable.

The cables are plugged in, IDE1 goes to the hard drives and IDE goes to the CD Rom & Floppy.

Any idea what else could be the problem?

A:CD Rom not recognized.....

Does the CD Rom show up in the BIOS? You might want to check to make sure that it is trying to autodetect the device.

Also, when you power on the machine is the power light on the CD-Rom lighting up? [Just checking to make sure that the cd-rom is getting ower.]

If that doesn't work, you might want to try another IDE cable and verify your jumper settings on the CD-Rom.

Today I realized that when I check the USB (B-Type) cord on my scanner (Epson GT-S50) to make sure it is connected securely, while the connection is very snug, the whole connection can be wobbled around. I hope that makes sense. In other words, the USB is plugged firmly into whatever it is plugging into inside the scanner, but whatever it is plugging into inside the scanner is loose. This explains a lot to me because I've been having issues with the scanner for months that a reboot usually fixes.

My Question is: do you know what it is plugging into inside and can that part be replaced?

Thanks for any input.

P.S. I forgot to say that Soluto says there is an Unidentified USB, or it can't be detected, or something similar - sorry I don't have the exact wording.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA7VRXP, I may have updated (flashed) the BIOS once, too long ago to remember really. RAM is PC-2700 and is made by NCP.

I had 512 mb before (PC-2700), bought two sticks of 1 gig each, inserted them, the BIOS did not correctly show the amount of RAM, it said something funny like 64 mb. In WinXP I could read I have 1.5 gb. So I thought, a faulty slot maybe? Took the 512mb out, Windows show 1 gb. Took one of the 1 gb sticks out - Windows says 512 mb. So, 1 gb sticks work as 512 mb.

Any suggestions? I looked in BIOS setup and I don't think it says anything like 'enable more than 512mb per slot'.

According to my reading of the manual, you can't have 2.5gb of memory. It looks to me that dimm 3 only works if you have 3x1gb sticks. If you've got the manual, have a look,or you can download it from the website.Put the two 1gb sticks in slots 1&2 and see if it gets recognised as 2gb.

Hi, I have a "Powerdata" high-speed USB two hub plugged into a cord which is plugged into a USB port at the back of the computer.

Usually it happens after the computer has been running for a while, I get "USB not recognized" error message popping up.

I also get "device can function faster if you plug it into another port and hear our list of ports are available"

And when I have my speakers on I constantly get that sound that indicates you just plug something in or unplug something!

What would be causing it to do that?

I also have a "Centrios S. D. card reader/writer model number 441-5002 plugged into the USB hub.

It seems to give me all these error messages back and forth for awhile then it seems to stabilize again!? -- now it's doing it again!

I checked all the connections they all seem to be tight and he even plug them into different ports but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

What could that be?

I'm putting together an old PC for a friend and I cannot for the life of me get my RAM to recognize correctly. I have 3 sticks of very old pc66 ram equaling 196mb. I cannot get it to recognize any more than 1 stick of 64 mb at a time. I have tested each stick and they all work individually, just not working together.

I purchased an ASUS motherboard and the driver disc stated that i should install the USB 2.0 drivers directly from SP2, or something along those lines.
When i connect my ipod, it says that it can perform faster.
Why is the usb not working as 2.0

A:USB 2.0 Not being recognized

Well, did you install USB2 drivers directly from SP2 or something?

My question has to do with a DVD+R that is no longer recognized by my computer's DVD driver. This is the only affected disc. It contains YouTube clips, in the main, and hasn't been a problem until just now. Are the files on the DVD recoverable, or is it irretrievably corrupted. I appreciate any hints. Thanks.

A:DVD+R not recognized

Test the disc on another PC. It could be the disc is damaged or the drive is beginning to fail.

I have several USB HDD's but they are "reluctant". I mean by that, when they are plugged in, a Windows message comes up that says "Found new hardware....", another that has a message that using a 2.0 port would be faster, etc. but the drives never show up in My Computer.

Device manager shows a yellow exclamation mark in front of the "USB Mass Storage Device". I can uninstall it by right clicking, but the drive still does not install.

Any suggestions on how to get Windoze to recognize them? TIA

The Dimension 4700 is an excellent computer with few problems.
I would consider replacing the cable first, then looking for the recent post by LookingAround on this problem here at TechSpot

Are the USB ports installed in Device Manager? Try updating your chipset drivers or checking for any updates for that model.

Ok, I will start from the beginning in order to try to give all necessary information.

I was given a used Acer Extensa 4620 laptop about a year ago when my PC went kaput on me. It had a 160GB HDD and the OS was XP. Well a few days ago I was cleaning out some old programs I never use because space was getting slim on there. No vital programs or anything (as far as I know). But I was also trying to install Nero because I was having burning issues with my usual DVD burning program. There were rumors that the version of Nero I was downloading had a virus on it, but most people said that was a false positive that virus scanners were pulling up because of the KeyGen.

Anyways.... the laptop slowly died on me. At first, it stopped loading completely. Anytime I tried to do anything with a Windows folder, the computer would freeze up and I would have to reboot by pressing and holding the power button. Then I started to notice that less icons in the bottom right were loading when I would reboot. I tried to run Spybot S&D and it ended up freezing. AdAware pulled up no problems. I ran Norton 360 and it did not find any viruses either. I then ran multiple disk checks and such because the laptop prompted me to because of the way I had to reboot. I knew there was something wrong.

Well, after a few of the bad reboots, I started to just get the "black screen with the blinking white underscore" issue that I have read about here. I decided that even though it would suck to... Read more

The F8 key is not recognized. The keyboard is a PS2 type. I have tried several different ones. I am not sure which thread this should be in because I am not sure where the key recognition during the boot sequence is done. Is it in the BIOS so it happens at the end of the POST, or initial boot loader, or actual boot of the OS?
The other "boot directive keys" such as ESC, TAB, and DEL are recognized just fine. The motherboard is a WinFast / FoxConn 6100K8MA.

I have a new laptop. The CD drive was working before, and gives a message that no cd rom is found now. I have done the windows updates and they show that it was updated. No cd drive shows up with the drives. Help!

In the Device Manager, I am getting a code 39. that the driver is corrupted or missing.

A:cd rom not recognized

You'll want to start out running an SFC /Scannow to check your system for corrupted files. See System Files - SFC Command

The reason I say this is because, by default, Vista contains drivers for most optical (CD/DVD) drives. If your drive is a Blu-Ray drive, then you'll need to see about re-installing the drivers in Vista from your laptop manufacturer, but it sounds more like corrupted files, and this will help determine if something is indeed wrong with the files on your system or not.

I was installing a new sound card when I ran into my current problem. It booted up one time and just shut off on its own. I tried to reboot the system, but I got the message that states that I need to pick a boot device. My BIOs settins will not recognize my HD as a bootable device. I unplugged my Disk drives, sound card and made sure the HD was the only device left. (Primary IDE, Master) and it still wouldn't give me the option to boot with the HD.
I would really appreciate any help. Thanks for your time.

I have an old HDD I wish to put in my even older computer: Samsung model VA34324A 4.32GB, Cyl:14896 Heads: 9, Sectors: 63.

First of all, the old computer is known to be good and boots perfectly with its old HDD and Win98se.

The computer will not recognise the Samsung. I have:

1) Attempted to boot with a known good W98se boot floppy. This was sucessful but attempting to run FDISK indicated no fixed disc present.

2) Attempted to boot with a known good HDD diagnostic utility floppy. The utility loadsd then during the primary master detection, stops responding

3) Entered the BIOS and manually set the HDD information given above.

4) Reinstalled the original HDD and sucessfully booted.

6) The faulty HDD allows the computer to boot as far as the BIOS setup screen, then stops. There is a "blink" code from the HDD's LED and the one on the front of the computer. The code is: long-short-short-short.

7) The HDD winds up when the computer is powered up; it is quite loud. It then winds down to silence and the boot fails.

8) The jumper, IDE cable and power cable are installed correctly.

I suspect that this HDD is dead. Nothing I do will get it to be recognised.

Is it dead? Is there any other options?

A while back i bought two of these:

It's Corsair DDR2 RAM, two 1GB sticks. I'm running a Compaq Presario PC with Intel Celeron D 360.

The system came with only 512 MB of memory, which is just a slap in the face considering it runs Vista Home...

Anyway I installed the RAM and only 1GB is recognized. At the time I was busy and didn't get around to fixing it but now I'm working on it.

The motherboard is this:

ECS Livermore i945GC sock 775.
It's supposed to support up to 2 gigs of ram, in two slots. Which is exactly what I installed.

With both sticks in the BIOS and My Computer only recognizes 1gb, CPU-Z does the same. I've switched the sticks with no luck. I've run it with one stick in one slot, that worked, but with one stick in the other slot the computer just beeps at me and will not run. Really I'm posting here to confirm my assumption that one of the slots is faulty and simply will not work, no matter what I do? It's not worth it to me to get a new mobo, as I plan on building my own computer shortly (this is the household computer.)

To sum up the question:
Is one of my RAM slots fried?

A friend of mine bought a refurbished computer, with 2 sticks of 4 gb memory, total of 8 gb. From the get go it only registered as 4, we tried both sticks, simultaneously in a different computer, and they both registered, total 8 gb. He went to a computer technician, and he said, many times, if the two ram sticks are not identical, there can be a problem, he wrote to the seller, and received 2 new ram sticks. He put them into the computer, and only 4 gb registered, at one time after putting them in, they both registered, but after a restart, we were back to 4 gb. The operating system is windows 7 professional 64 bit. Let me just point out, the computer doesn?t even show 8 gb, just 4 (not like others that had a problem of 8 gb, and only 4 gb usable) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have just built a new computer and cannot get the DVD-ROM to work. When I put DVD's into the drive it just spins and does not recognize the DVD's.

Specs are:
AMD XP 2100+
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
Toshiba SD-M1502 (OEM)

I didn't get any software from the company, but I did get InterVideo WinDVD 5.1 Channel from MSI with the video card. I have tried downloading other software and tried it, but I still get the same thing. The DVD-ROM isn't recognizing that there is a DVD in the drive to read, so I don't think the software is the issue.

I've been given a HP laptop which I factory reset to original windows 7 but it keeps telling me a USB device is not recognized even though I haven't got anything plugged in a USB port (If I plug my memory stick into any port it recognises it).
When I open device manager there isn't anything showing an error.

I upgraded to windows 10 in the hope it would fix the problem but it's just the same and constantly alerting me.

Also, and I don't know if it's linked but at startup I get a runtime error in atibrtmon

Be grateful of any help

I have windows Vista 32 and for some reason my USB 2.0 ports are now acting like 1.1. I get the message balloon saying my device will perform better if connected to a highspeed port and it says click here to view highspeed ports and it says I don't have any. I have 4 on the back and 2 on the front of my Acer Aspire M5630 and they are all listed as 2.0. Under Device Manager it doesn't say ENHANCED anywhere. I tried uninstalling the usb ports and rebooting but it didn't work. I'm using a USB mouse and I know what port to leave for it to work but what ROOT HUB do I leave for it to work as well. I want to keep my mouse working so I can also try uninstalling Disk Drives that aren't connected and also everything under Storage Volumes.

I have a Acer Aspire 5520 notebook. I am currently dual-booting Ubuntu Studio and Windows Vista. When I boot into either, I can't seem to access my cd drive. In linux, it says unable to mount and in windows it doesn't even show up. I checked the bios and it doesn't even recognize the drive. The puzzling thing is it seems to be working just fine. It seems to scan the disk when my system starts up and when i put a new disk in, it just doesn't show up in my computer. I was wondering if anyone had any tricks i could try before getting something new. I'm willing to try anything.

Okay this might be a tad long but I'm going to give you detailed info on what happened.

I bought a new DVD RW drive today, I originally had one CD ROM drive and one RW CD Rom drive, CD rom came with the pc, the RW was installed by me and is a Phillips, both worked fine after I installed the second.

So back to today, I removed the CD rom because I thought maybe I could just replace it with the DVD drive and use it along with the RW drive (should I not have done this???), I installed the DVD RW in the old cd rom spot, and at first the pc recognized it, but everytime I tried to load a disk in it, (game install) it would give me an error message and close.

So I took it back out, then put the Phillips drive in it's place and moved it to the space right under it. That didn't work either. So finally I put the original CD rom back in, with the new DVD rw, and now the pc is not recognizing the dvd rw drive AT ALL!

It is still recognizing my regular CD rom drive, I didn't put the other RW back in because I was afraid it would only confuse my system more.

I tried shutting down and restarting and even searched for drivers for the new dvd drive (but I shouldn't need a drive with xp I don't think), I couldn't find any drivers for the dvd drive and the pc is still not picking up the dvd drive and I've checked the wires, checked the connection, restarted, the works, nothing.

Did I screw something up in my system by switching drives? I need help, because at this point... Read more
