What software DVD Player are you using? Are you getting any sound on your system at all? If so, try VLC player (free) and see if that works.

I USE WIN ME. WITH MY OLD MEDIA PLAYER (VER 7 ? ) I COULD PLAY BACK VOB FILES (DVD MOVIE FILES) THAT I HAD RIPPED TO MY HARD DRIVE. uPON DOWNLOADING VERSION 9 I CAN NO LONGER OPEN VOB FILES, AND GET AN ERROR MESSAGE WHEN I TRY.
FROM WITHIN WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER THERE IS A LINK THAT TAKES ME TO PLUGGINS THAT WILL DO THIS, BUT THOSE PLUGGINS ALL STATE THAT THEY ARE FOR WIN XP. WILL THOSE SAME PLUGGINS WORK IN ME, OR ARE THERE OTHERS THAT I SHOULD DOWNLOAD?
THANKS

A:Playing Dvds With Windows Media Player 9

We don't help with with illegal stuff here, and DVD ripping is sort of a gray-area. I understand that you own a legal copy of the DVD, but ripping it is still illegal because it uses DeCSS to crack the encryption. So im not sure if I should be helping you here.

That aside, those plugins won't work for you, however PowerDVD will play VOB files for you.

Previously I was using Windows Media Player 9 and DVDs were playing smoothly. But now, after formating my Hard Disk, I have installed Windows Media Player 10. But to my surprise, DVDs are not playing at all. What is the technique to play DVDs in Windows Media Player 10?
Secondly, please let me know how to delete Windows Media player 10 from The folder 'Program files' Thanking U.

You probably need a DVD decoder. You usually get them by installing a commercial player like PowerDVD etc.

Windows 7 Ultimate: Anyone know how to stop WMP from opening and playing DVD movies? This used to be a relatively simple task in XP, but Microsoft have really outdone themselves here, with WMP jumping in and hogging the limelight, even though in my case, WMP can't even play the files. But even if it could, there are better movie players available.

Thanks :-)

A:Windows Media Player - how to prevent it playing DVDs?

In Control Panel choose AutoPlay.
In the Window that opens you can adjust all the AutoPlay options.

If wish to have certain Programs be the default you can choose Default Programs in the Control Panel.

Hi again.

Windows Media Player and PowerDVD lock up and freeze when I try to play DVDs on them.
I have Windows Media Player 11. When I go to file/tools/options, I try to click on the DVD tab and I get the "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close". I get the same message when I try and just play a DVD on it. PowerDVD just locks up without showing an error.

Similarly, I can only hear sound for AVI files in media player.
Quicktime player plays MPEG-4 files fine.

The strangest thing is is that I have a player called VLC media player which seems to play everything including DVDs. But I would love to get media player working instead.

This is a new PC, and it has never worked. Thanks.

Edit- I should mention that my dvd drive firmware is up to date.

It used to play DVDs until I uninstalled InterVideo WinDVD. Dumb move. I guess WMP was using InterVidoeo's codec. I reinstalled the program, thinking that would fix the problem, but it didn't. I've also download the Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility and set the InterVideo decoder as my preferred decoder, but I didn't get anywhere with that either. How do I get WMP 11 to play DVDs again like it did before? Can I do this without downloading another program or reverting to an older version of WMP?

I created a dvd with sony vegas & dvd arcitect. it plays in perfect in win dvd & other dvd apps but it wont play the audio in windows media player.

Im Thinking I need to load some codec like the ac3 codec for wmp to be able to play the audio in wmp. can I also work around this by encoding the audio part in another format like mp3 are do I have to except the ac3 because its part of the mpeg2 standard?
Why do all other blockbuster video dvds play audio in wmp perfect with no extra codecs needed but if I ceate a dvd it needs a special codec. Do they include all the codecs on the dvd itself?

My goal is to create a dvd that plays in anything without needing special this or that because most of my end users wont know what to do & my created dvds will be useless.

This is freakin confusing. please help

Recently I have started having problems playing DVDs in Windows Media Player 11.

Discs that previously played without any problem now do not play smoothly at all and seem to "stutter".

CDs appear to play OK - although, having said that, I am not sure they are playing as smoothly as they used to. It could be my imagination but I am sure there is a discernible change on live CD recordings where one track runs into another.

I have completely uninstalled and re-installed WMP 11 and the problem remains the same.

Anything played via Media Center is problem free.

I only purchased my laptop in November 2006 and am a bit of a novice so this might be something really simple but I would be extremely grateful for any advice.

Thank you.

I am using windows vista and using windows media player 11 to watch dvds. The english audio does not work when playing dvds, even though US english is the default setting and I select US english in the dvd settings. The background music plays and with one dvd I managed to hear some dialogue. Every other language that I select (e.g french, german, english for hearing impaired) works. I have tried numerous DVDs so it is not a dvd problem, and I have tried those dvds on a laptop and it works fine. So it is not an audio problem, nor a faulty dvd. Am I missing a codec or something or is it in the wrong region (I live in Australia) I dont have any other dvd players on this computer so I can't test it out that it is just a WMP problem. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Ok - Windows Gurus.

I have windows media player on the machine. Everything has worked smoothly for months now. I now have a problem with media player 10. When I click on a link to view streaming video, the clip will buffer for a bit, then the 1st frame of the video comes up/freezes and the audio continues on.

If I close media player and click on the same clip, both the video and audio work fine. What is causing the video to freeze (audio continues to play) when I click on the video clips the first time around.

If I try to play something locally, there are no problems. It is only with streaming content and this is a new issue. Software wise, I have been authoring a handful of DVDs but outside of that, nothing has changed.

I have tried to reinstall media 10, reinstall the codec packs etc. All other media players play fine (real audio, winamp etc)- no video freeze. So this is only inherent to wmp10. Weird.

Any other thoughts on what has been altered to cause the video freeze?

I am all for suggestions and thanks in advance for the help!

Windows Media player keeps getting interrupted by "things" other programs?
Media player keeps getting interrupted by "things" - other programs I guess. Both while playing mp3's and music videos. It doesn't shut down. It just sort of shorts out the music... until I guess whatever is finished bothering it.

It happens
-When I try to rename files or move them around in Windows Explorer [not the ones playing].

-While on the internet. No certain reason that I can see. The websites/webpages I have open don't appear to have any media player music playing. It happens when I use either IE or Foxfire browsers.

Is there a button or something I can select that can keep Windows Media Player from being affected by other programs? It is verY irritating.

I'm not using Windows Media Player, I know that can't play DVDs in Windows 8. I'm using PowerDVD, it came for free with my laptop. When I play my DVD it stops responding. I know the issue is not with my physical DVD drive because of the following reasons:
I am presently dual-booting XP Pro SP3 and Windows 8 Pro with Media Center. The former can play DVDs just fine.VLC Player on Windows 8 can also play DVDs just fine.

I'm curious if there's any way to get this to work on Windows Media Center on Windows 8, then, because I paid for the upgrade from Pro to Pro with Media Center, after all.

If the DVD is copy protected, and your monitor is not HDCP enabled, then that could be the problem. You wouldn't see this on XP because XP doesn't have HDCP requirements.

I've been having a problem with Windows Media Player 11 for a few months now and I'm at a loss for figuring it out.

A few months ago, Windows Media Player decided to stop playing my DVDs. Before this it had worked perfectly in both it and Windows Media Center. The DVD drive works just fine as I'm able to read and write DVDs without a problem. I had pretty much stopped watching DVDs for a few months so I can't link it to specifically one change that I've made to my computer, but suffice it to say none of the new program instillation should have bothered anything video related nor have I changed the hardware configuration.

This is what it looks like when I try to watch a movie:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v139/NicholasJohn16/DVDPlayback.jpg

I downloaded and installed VLC Media Player and I am able to watch movies perfectly fine with it. This leads me to believe that something has gone wrong with the embedded DVD codec in Vista, but I can't figure out how to find the problem or fix it.

This is annoying me because I usually sit back and watch movies with Windows Media Center and my remote, but I can't do that easily with VLC Player.

Any suggestions? Thank you for any assistance.

I have all the licenses and DivX encoders needed for Mpegs, AVIs, and WMVs. I was able to play DVDs before I installed my new hard-drive, but after copying WinXP (which already had SP2 before the drive installation) I'm now unable to play a DVD in my Media Player.

I'll explain what happens when I attempt to play a DVD in Windows Media Player. I can still right-click and go to Root Menus and Title Menus, and I can skip to chapters in the play list that usually appears on the right-hand side of the window. However, when playing the DVD, there's no video and no audio. In other words, the "play bar" at the bottom is moving but there's no video or audio that shows the DVD is actually playing.

I checked the Options if DVD playback is enabled, and it is. So how do I fix this problem? How do I get video and audio playback for my DVDs again? Do I need to reinstall Windows Media Player? If so, how would I reinstall it, and would I need to hunt down all of my DivX encoders that I've accumulated over the various internet sites I've been through? (I dont remember where I downloaded them) Is there a DivX encoder update or any other type of encoder update from Microsoft that's specifically for Windows Media Player?

Reading http://msmvps.com/blogs/chrisl/articles/10726.aspx :

Quote:

DVD support in Windows Media Player has always relied on a third parties DVD decoder to decode the MPEG-2 video that is on every DVD. If you are having problems playing DVD's the first thing you should try is to reinstall your DVD decoder on-top of itself.

If you are not sure who's decoder you are using go to Start | Run | Type DVDUPGRD /Detect. This should list the DVD decoder installed. You will want to reinstall the decoder from your original media or download a copy from the manufacturer of the decoder. In addition, the Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility can be used to see if you currently have an MPEG-2/DVD decoder installed if you are running Windows XP. From within the program you can then set it was the default MPEG decoder. If you see nothing listed, you would want to reinstall that application in order to reinstall the decoder. WinDVD and PowerDVD are two examples of software that would install MPEG-2 decoders that Windows Media Player can use.

Please see DVD and MPEG-2 Support and Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility for more information about MPEG-2 and DVD Playback in Windows Media Player.

If reinstalling the decoder doesn?t help then the next step is to reinstall your video card drivers. Get the latest drivers from the manufacturer of your video card and reinstall them.

so a few nights ago I was watching a few episodes of a tv show on dvd. Right when I got to the end of the second episode on the disk, Windows Media Player froze or something. When I restarted the player and tried to play the third episode, I couldn't get any video to appear. I could here sound, but not video. I tried playing other dvds but the same thing happens. I can't jump around to different scenes on the list off to the right. I can't really do anything. So I was wondering if this could be a codec issue? It was working fine for me until it froze.

And this apparently is only happening to dvds. Other video files, avi mpeg, mpg they all are capable of playing fine. Its just these VOB files from dvds.

I'm having a problem trying to play a DVD using my PC under W7.

Originally, I had Windows Media Player installed and that was working fine.

Then, I read that MPC-Home Cinema was better than Windows Media Player and so I tried to D/L and install that. But during the installation procedure I got the message that the latest version of DirectX runtime (June 2010) has not been installed and so MPC-Home Cinema would not run. It advised me to D/L and intall the latest version of DirectX runtime. I tried to do that. But I couldn't make it work.

Then, I tried to use Windows Media Player again but got the a message asking me if it should ask me every time whether I wanted to ask if it should ask me whether to use WMP or MPC (I could be mistaken about that. It may have asked some other question). When I answered that it need not ask me every time, I now can't get either app to run any DVDs.

I'd really like to revert back to using WMP in the way it was originally installed. Can anyone tell me how to do that?

Also, I don't know why I can't seem to be able to D/L and install the latest version of DirectX runtime (June 2010). But if anyone can help me to do that, I would be very appreciative.

Gosh! What a mess!

I'm a newbie here, and wasn't able to find the answer to my question in previous threads...so, please take it easy on me if it's a problem that's already been covered.

I have a Dell laptop with a DVD drive. I've been able to watch movies for months with no problems, all of a sudden yesterday I put in a legit movie that I purchased, and WMP 10 gives me an error message that it can't play the DVD because of digital copy protection. I tried other movies, and tried playing the movies in Media Center and got the same message, so I installed WMP 11 thinking it would help.

Needless to say, it hasn't, and I can't watch movies now. I've gone through all the Troubleshooting on Microsoft.com, which basically entailed restarting the media player, and the computer itself - to no avail.

I'm in the process of downloading another media player that some people on this site have recommended (VLC), so I'm hoping that will be a temporary fix...but I'd really like to get WMP back up and running.

Please help.

Thx

I was trying to play one of my DVDs on my laptop yesterday and I got this pop up that said
"Windows Media has encountered a problem and need to close. We are sorry for the inconveniences"
I was like WTF ?? !! So I tried opening it with Real Player and got the same answer. I removed and re-installed Windows Media player but that didn't help either.

Following is the error signature after the error message:

AppName: realplay.exe AppVer: 6.0.12.1483 ModName: quartz.dll
ModVer: 6.5.2600.2749 Offset: 0003fa8eproblem and we need to close.

The only thing I can think of that may have contributed to this is that couple days ago, I was removing some programs via "Add or Remove programs" to clean up some disk space. I may have deleted some software/programs that have to do with being able to play movies using either Windows or Real player.

I have two pcs on a wireless network connected to a cable modem. One pc (Thinkpad) has no problem playing internet radio stations through wmp. The other one (Dell 4100) has problems with streaming audio. It can connect to the radio station fine (or download the audio file in either format) but then it keeps buffering while it's playing. I've tried just about everything I can find to fix it: editing the registry (MSoft tech note,) changing the network settings, changing the buffer rate but nothing seems to work. There is more than enough bandwidth to handle the flow of data, plus my cable company says it's not them (of course.) Any help would be really appreciated!

Thanks.

I'm at my wits end.

I put together a capable gaming pc about a month ago with a bunch of new components and some cannibalized older components.

I installed all of the drivers from the motherboard cd. I have a radeon x1300 vid card. I'm running windows xp home ed. I've installed about every codec and plugin under the sun. I've troubleshot my load with regard to Windows itself.

I cannot play Windows Media Audio/Video files for the life of me.

I do get audio, but the video is all hyper-colored like looking at scrambled porn.

It doesn't matter if I download the video or watch it in a browser (any browser). It doesn't matter if I open up the DLed video in real player, Windows Media player or Generic DIVX player #458973: it still comes out all scrambled and in crazy moon-man rainbow colors.

I have no problem playing any other type of windows media player file. Quicktime works fine as well.

Please help.

A:Windows Media Player won't properly play Windows Media Audio/Video files

Well standard Window's media files should play without the need for any additional codecs.

Maybe check the forums of your vid card for some answers.

I recently installed a DVD burner on a computer with windows xp home sp2. When I try to play dvd's in windows media player I get this message:

Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. You might need to adjust your Windows display settings. Open display settings in Control Panel, and then try lowering your screen resolution and color quality settings.Click to expand...

Of course doing those things doesn't fix anything.

Any suggestions?

A:Windows Media Player Playing DVD's

The message is kind of strange -- but the bottom line is that Windows Media Player has never come with the mpeg-2 decoder needed for playing DVDs.

For this you must have a 3rd party player installed such as PowerDVD-- or if you don't care about using WMP -- you can view just about anything in VLC: >>

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

To check whether Windows already has the required decoder, use this:

I have watched these movies in the past but now all of a sudden I click on the files and Windows Media Player opens up like it's gonna play the clip but nothing ever happends. Nadda, Zero...nuth'n
This also applies for .wmv files off the internet.
(I've tested with many .wmv files and media player always opens up like it's gonna play but never does)

It has worked in the past.

I have Vista Business x64 sp1
I've tried to reinstall windows media player but I get a message telling me I already have the latest version instsalled: 11.0.6001.7000
I downloaded this, Windows Media Player Software Informer: Latest version download, news and info about this Microsoft Corporation program. Expand your horizons in the field of playing videos., which says it's version 11.0.6001.7000 but I still get the same error message.

I googled fix's and such but nothing I tried has helped out.
Tried reinstalling SP1, won't let me, says I have it installed already.

I'm not that great with Vista in regards to uninstalling media player (if that's possible) in order to reinstall it.
If someone can help me out here, I'd much appriaciate it.

Thank you.

When I try to play a DVD in any player on my computer the program stops responding. As soon as I take out the disk the program starts responding. Some times the disk does start playing and shortly after the video starts freezing and program stops responding. Anyone got any ideas. I have reloaded drivers and players and no help there.

A:Player freezes when playing DVDs

1. Make sure the DVDs are scrupulously clean - a single fingermark can cause malfunction.

2. Defragment your hard drive regularly if you often install/uninstall apps or delete files.

3. Run the error-checker on the C: drive (right-click > properties > tools > "check now"

4. Lastly, the laser-lens in the DVD drive may need cleaning. For this you'll need to buy a purpose-made cleaning disc for DVD drives.
make sure it's for computer DVD drives, as some of those made for standalone DVD Players are not suitable for computer DVD drives.

Hello again,

My saga continues with getting all the kinks out of this newly constructed
desktop computer. All and all things are going well.

I still have one pesky problem. I can not get audio from when playing DVDs.
I can place an audio CD in the drive and I hear that just fine.

I am using the canned dvdplayer.exe from windows 2000.
I have installed every service pack and patch available from Microsoft based on there windows update tool.

I also get no audio when I use the MaXimus DVD player version 1.2

I know that it must be a codec problem. That is all I know though.

I have attached a copy of the information tool from Nero 6.0.
It is information overload for me.
Can anyone guide me in correcting this problem? This is the last step before I hand the computer over to its proud new owner. :giddy:

A:No Audio while playing DVDs

I see on that report you have a Roxio driver on your machin CDralW2k, Cdr4_2k
These files cause a conflict with Nero .You will need to go to Nero's site and read a bit on this issue and clean it up. They have utilities for this .
I would use the Nero Showtime as a player and uninstall your DVD player.
Turn off Autorun and point media files to start Nero
There is a update for nero to 6.6 You may want to do this after you clear the conflicts.

I recently got a Zune and for the Zune software to work, WMP needs to work. A few months ago, it stopped playing music altogether. Not one song. It won't even play anything off of a CD, or on the internet. I was probably on the phone with Zune for 7-8 hours for them to tell me they couldn't help me. I was then connected to Microsoft, who told me I could call Acer or pay 60 dollars plus tax to Microsoft for them to help me. I called Acer and they said I would have to pay $60 per 30 mins. I don't have that kind of money right now and i just want my WMP fixed!!
Can someone help me please!!

A:Windows Media Player not playing music! please help!

Welcome
Here's an answer that someone found (seems like alot of trouble to me, syncing music to Att phone then back to,,,,)
http://askville.amazon.com/Zune-Win...edia-player/AnswerViewer.do?requestId=5785573

I suggest reinstalling the Media Player. Click Start, type Turn Windows features on and off

Uncheck the player, apply, restart Windows, recheck, apply, restart Windows.

The above may be a quick fix that won't last though?

Have you tried the free "Jet Player" - there's not much it won't play or burn and it will run circles around WMP.

Hope this helps as it seems you have found what others have - (it may be awhile before Microsoft decides to deal with this issue)

In the past I have created numerous m3u files to play an mp3 file on Windows Media Player and they all have worked well. Today, however, I created one just the same way and when I play it I get the message:
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

When I check the help file for the file types that are supported I find that it does support m3u and mp3 files.

Does anyone have any help for me to know how to fix this?

Hi there rathofman,

this sometimes happens if the server is busy, it may be an idea to completely clear your internet cache, history, cookies etc then go back to the page. If the same happens, click refresh on the toolbar a few times to see if that loads the clip or not.

Does this happen on all sites with video clips or just some?

I can't seem to figure this one out. Windows media player 9 is freezing and not playing CDs , files or anything at all. We are having trouble with our network here where it sometimes takes a while to get to a website due to a bad decision on hardware. Full duplex does not translate well to half duplex for 20 plus computers. I'm wondering if this is playing a part in WMPs problem of freezing and not playing files or CDs because of not being able to reach out to the net.

Thanks in advance,

Specks

I have a Windows 7 system that is running all Windows Updates available as on today. I assume it is running the latest edition of WMP; but, I can see no way of determining the version. It plays MTS (movies made on a Panasonic Camcorder) files just fine.

Now the problem:

I have another system here running WinXP with all updates available for it as of today. Again, I cannot determine which version of WMP. It will not play MTS files. It is running a Intel Core 2 CPU 6300 $ 1.86 GHz and 2 Gigs of RAM. It stops at a screen that says it is loading but remains black indefinitely with no progress indicator.

Any advice?

Am I just going to have to go to Win7? I know there are other programs that probably will play MTS; but, it would be nice if I could get WMP to do it without having to go to Win7.

Welcome to SF arkasharma

Do you have any codec packs installed? If yes which one?

We usually suggest Sharks007's codecs. You can get it from here: Download Windows 7 Codecs 3.6.8 - FileHippo.com

Some steps that you may need to follow after installation of Sharks codecs.
Click on the
Scroll down to Shark007s codecs folder.
Expand it and select the settings application by right click run as administrator button.
On the bottom click on Shark007 SUGGESTED settings.
Lastly you will get a confirmation dialogue that all the videos will open with windows media player (but actually they will open with other players as well)
Attached is a picture as reference.

And some prefer the Klite Codec pack from this link: Download K-Lite Codec Pack 8.92 (Full) - FileHippo.com with basic next next next installation steps.

Install either of it but make sure you've removed any other codec packs previously installed.

Let us know how it goes.

um well lets see first I'll start with my problem.
I have Windows Media Player 11 it worked fine for a real long time but recently it finally something happened to it. I can hear sound just fine except that I can see no video at all I've tried different videos and nothing all I get is sound, but the weirder thing is that my Enhancements box is completely blank along with the video it won't show any visualizations either. I tried using Windows media classic and it worked fine I also tried iTunes and it was good. I also checked if it can stream any videos but it won't do either but it will stream on firefox. I'm not quite sure what I can do.

Hiya

Is this the only site that has this problem? If so, lets try a bit of a cleanup:

Go to Tools | Internet Options. General tab. Under Delete Files, delete offline content

Advanced tab, under Browsing, look for Enable Insta on Demand. Untick.
Under Security, look for Empty Tempory Internet... Tick.
Apply and OK

Go to Run and type MSINFO32
On the left choose Software Enviroment, then Startup Programs. Copy/paste the list here.

Thing is, is I formatted my PC not long ago, and i had my media saved on my xtra drive, and before i formatted, everything worked perfectly. Now, after formatting and putting all my media back on, certain clips won't play properly.

The audio will play, but the video doesnt show. I went on the windows support site, found alot of solutions, but not for WMP 10, and all the solutions for that version arnt working.

I tryed reinstalling, updating e.tc. but still, no luck.

Sounds like (no pun intended), your audio driver needs to be reinstalled. Drivers do get corrupted especially when you remove programs that require audio support.

First, try removing Windows Media Player (WMP) 11 in Add/Remove Programs, then reinstall it. Does the problem continue?

If so, try removing DivX. I do not think it is causing the problem, but could not hurt to try. Does it still continue?

check in windows task manager the performance tab click it and check what memory is available for use by windows and cpu percentage available or being used...sitting at the desktop run the video and check again if memory is very low then your system needs more memory if the cpu percentage is high then to many of your programs are running that are not required to run,at start up of the pc.if the pc is hogging to much of the system resources then poor video play and display will result.
also make sure the dvd device is set for direct memory access

When opening a video with wmp 12 the "now playing" window always opens as a very tiny window or, if "fit player to video" is checked, adjusts itself to the size of the video. When manually adjusting the size of the window and then closing the application and opening a new video, the "now playing" window goes back to being tiny. I have tried checking and unchecking both "fit player to video" and "fit video to player on resize" under "video" on the right click menu. With previous versions of windows media player it was possible to adjust the window size and have all the videos adjust to that size. Is this a bug or a new feature? Or is there a way to change back to the old way? I'm using windows 7 RC x64.

A:Windows Media Player 12 Now Playing window too small

I think this is expected behavior. Have you tried playing the video in the Library view?

edit: I think I found something of a workaround but maybe its not entirely what you want. If you open Windows Media Player (without opening a file) and switch to the Now Playing view, hold the ctrl button while resizing the window. Then exit and open a file. On my computer it will pop up at the same size I had just resized it to.

I've recently had to do a full system wipe of my computer due to various issues. Now I have a bang up to date version of Windows Media Player 10 as well as all the codecs packs. However the .ASF videos just won't play properly, the videos stop and start every second with huge gaps in between each frame. Windows Media Player also crashes with playing these files, I tried RealPlayer which also delivers exactly the same results.

I'm totally stuck with what to do,

Thanks for any help you will be able to give me in advance,

Martin

A:Trouble playing ASF files and Windows Media Player

Sounds like it might be a codec problem. Do a google search for a program called gspot (you can guess why I won't do one at work -.-;; ) It opens a file and reads what codec's its trying to use. Giving that output about the audio and video codec would let us know what those files are using in particular and can hunt down a way to fix it.

I download my Audiobooks from Audible.com into Windows Media Player and then burn to CD using Nero. However if I want to hear them directly from my computer I find I can not play the files. Is this not an anomoly? If they can be downloaded why can't I play them? Is there a codec I can install?

A:playing Audible .aa files in Windows media player

I have books from there also and can play them from within audible manager but if I go to the audible download folder and try then I can't play them either, though I thought I could with Vista. Are you using the audible manager program to try to play them or just the folder?

But Any other file format like Wav and Mpeg vidoes seems to work perfectly well.

I tried playing Mp3 files in Real player& Winamp, it works perfectly well.

So why suddenly only MP3 Files seem to start cutting on my Vista 32bit System?

Pls find a solution to the problem

I tried scanning for spywares, still no point...

I think this is a problem since I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 but can't be sure. Basically if I put a music CD into my laptop drive, Windows Media player 12 not only doesn't automatically play it but when I open Windows Media no CD is recognised in the drive. But if I click on Windows Explorer the songs are shown (although won't play with WM). But they play with RealPlayer. This is clearly a WM problem then... all other CD/DVD functions are working, just not WM.

I followed the instructions below (from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116#nextsteps) and deleted two files from the registry as instructed but this made no difference. I also have run the Device Manager Troubleshooter for the drive and that didn't work. Also I tried Microsoft's Mr Fix it but that didn't either. Can anyone help me please?

Thanks

Richard
PS Obviously this means I can't rip CDs either!

My uncle got DSL a couple of months ago and I've downloaded several large and small video clips and saved them to cd-rw's so that I could bring them home and put them on my computer, but I've encountered a problem when I try to view some of the clips. Some clips say ANOBOLIC when I try to open them and they won't play on either my laptop or my desktop pc, but I can open and view them fine on my uncle's computer. What do I need to download to fix this problem?

The other problem that I am having is that I saved some video clips that range from 15 to 30 minutes, and when I put the cd in either my laptop or desktop pc a couple of the clips say that they are 1 or 2 minutes when they are really 15 to 30 minute clips. I try to play them and they play for 1 or 2 minutes pause at the end and then move to the next clip, and when I fast forward the clip I am able to see some more of what wasn't shown in the first 1 or 2 minutes but it won't finish playing the whole clip. Again, I am able to view all of the clips perfectly on my uncle's computer.

At first I thought that the problem was with the cd-rw's, but since they work fine on my uncle's computer I have to believe that it is a problem with the media player. I've tried playing them with Realplayer and a couple other media players, but I keep having the same problem. I think that the Windows Media Player needs something downloaded, but I don't no what to download. Both my ... Read more

No matter where I go....our local t.v. channel online, abc, cbs, nbc, etc. I can't play a video with either Windows Media Player 11, or RealPlayer 10. When I click on a video it says "buffering". It gets to like 30% then plays two seconds of the video, then stops (freezes) and buffers again, then stops, then buffers and so on. Or it will freeze on one frame, so I will have a still picture of part of the video and the sound will keep going and play the whole audio portion, but not the picture. Is there anything I can do, or is there something I am doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have Windows XP Media Edition on a computer with Intel Pentium D Processor 2.8GHz w/Dual Core, 2 GB DDR2 SDRAM @ 667 MHz, 128MB ATI Hyper Memory (if any of this helps). When I first got this computer I could click on, and play, any video. Now I can't.

When I insert a DVD, I want it to start with InterVideo WinDVD 4, but Windows Media Player insists on playing it. I have gone into Options in WMP, and unchecked DVD, but it reverts right back, and won't stay unchecked. I'm using WMP 10.0 on XP Pro. I think I saw a fix for this problem somewhere but can't find it.

Thanks very much for any help.

So I have been trying to play/rip this CD I just got, but I have been having no luck at all. It will start playing the song, and continue playing the whole song, but the rest of the computer crashes so I am forced to restart. I don't get why one program would crash the whole computer like that... I've also tried to rip the CD, and it would rip about 4 tracks and then the computer would crash and it would stop. Anyone having a similar problem or know how to fix this one? It is an imported Japanese CD by the way, not sure if that matters or not.

Hi, i was wondering if anyone could help me.

I have windows media player 11, afaik the whole codec pack, and windows xp. Normally WMP works perfectly, except when i try and play videos in websites. The videos aways screen as just a plain green screen, with the audio working normally.

If i download the vieos however, they play fine in the WMP player itself.

Im pretty sure i have all the right codecs, but havent got a clue how to rectify this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Floody

I listen to talk radio online. I had been listening to KFI AM640 for quite some time, then all of a sudden was not able to listen to it.

Their support staff were not able to help, claiming thousands of people are still listening, my isp was not able to help claiming they are able to access it. I checked my settings with them and apparantly everything is on the right setting. According to them, I should be able to listen.

I can hear streaming from every other radio station I attempt to connect to. The only one I can't hear is KFI.

I have window XP home, I have Media player 10 and there is over 512mb of ram in my system.

Like I said, I was able to listen then two weeks ago, it wouldn't connect.
When I try to access this through media player (Rather than direct thru the site) This is the error message I get

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because a network error occurred. The server might not be available. Verify that you are connected to the network and that your proxy settings are correct."

Previously, when connecting thru the media player I would get "buffering" then it would start playing.. I don't get the "buffering" message now. All it does is show as if it's playing, then a minute or so later, I get that message. It doesn't play at all though.

I have checked my settings with my ISP, that is all correct. I've updated codecs, that made no difference.

Unfortunately, being a new user I can't p... Read more
