Q: Solved: How to change the program downloaded photos goes to

I have both HP Photosmart Essentials and HP Photosmart Primier. I inadvertently checked for the Essentials to always open my photos, when I really want Primier. Where do I find that list of 'open with'? I have looked everywhere. Probably in the wrong places.
Thanks for whatever help you can give.

Hello, i'm wondering if it is possible to change a open with option back to unknown application on some files. i accidentally clicked open with the picture opener and its stuck on it now. how can i revert this? step by step if possible.

Thank you.

A:How to change a file's open with program to when i first downloaded it

Go to Default Programs in Control Panel open it, select Set your Default Programs. First off you need to know the extension of this file you do not want any program to open, example, jpeg, gif..etc.. Select each program that can open this file and uncheck that extension for it, then would be back to unknown.

I was looking around my PC - internet prop, settings, view objects and found many DL program files. Some are listed more than once installed, same day and version; some status unknown; some total size '0'. Surely some can be deleted - if not all - but?? Surprised the control panels add-remove does not show these programs to be installed??Esp Java runtime enviroment? Where do these programs originate from?? I know the Java program I am running is 1.5.0. updated to 6 but it does not show in this file. Even found some Symantec Script Runner Class and RuFSI Utilit Class files installed created 6/06 but I deleted all AV system a long time ago??

Hi All,

I'm new to vista, have just installed Home Premium yesterday, and having problems already

Vista just simply won't run or save a program or file that I have downloaded.

I am logged on as the administator, and when I try to download a program, if I try to run it, it will download it, the progress will go to 100%, then when i click run, it just vanishes and does nothing else?? If i click to save it first, it asks me where to save it to, then just vanishes.

I have a dual core 1.8 system, 2gig ram, and a 256 graphics card.

I've had a search on the 'net and can't find this problem anywhere, Can anyone help please?

Regards, fb

Does anyone know which is the best program for correcting photos. It doesn't have to be free but then I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for it either. It must be able to resize photos because I get some of my grandkids from my son who has to downsize them. Where he lives they can only get dial up. As well I'd like to correct flaws like red eye and exposure and color--pretty basic stuff--because I like to print my own photos. Right now I'm using ACDsee 6, with photo slate and for the most part I'm happy with it except for their device dector which pops up and opens ACDsee whenever I turn my printer on or go to print photos, plug my camera in etc.--most annoying. That's why I'm willing to buy another program. Anyone have a good one? I have windows XP.

New problem for me after years of downloading photos from email to My pictures (and being automatically picked up by Picasa for viewing and editing). Yesterday when I downloaded photos from my Gmail/Comcast email account, they loaded in My Pictures as 'blank' photos in the MS-DOS application (previously, they have always loaded in JPG)! When I tried to open them, I get the "Open File-Security Warning stating that the publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software? I am given the option to RUN or CANCEL" I, of course, have cancelled as I am not sure that I want to run a MS-DOS application.
If by publisher, they mean who sent the pictures, it is my sister and I do trust her (and the pics were scanned for viruses, etc).
What could be causing the change in application (JPG to MS-DOS) all of a sudden? I have not changed any setting in my picture programs or downloading options. Could it be some setting on my sister side (her pictures have always come thru in JPG before)?
I have no idea where to even begin looking for a solution for this (except here)! Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am running Windows XP a1247c (Firefox as main browser-which has never been a problem).

A:Photos downloaded in MS-DOS application

Do you have extensions turned on so that you are seeing the entire file name? If extensions are turned off for known file types then its easy to slip a picture.jpg.exe file into the mail and make it seem like its a jpg file because the .exe is not shown. So the first thing to do is to check or confirm that possibility.

Otherwise do other jpg files on your system still open fine? Are you trying to open the problem ones while they are still attachments or are you moving them to a windows folder first and then trying to open them?

Also, a better way to handle the process might be for both parties to use Picasa. Your sister can upload to a Web folder and then share that with you so you can download them at your leisure and there is no threat of viruses or corruption by going through email. Keep email strictly text and you won't have that problem or any worries.

Is there any way I can do this system restore without loosing my photo's?
also, I, am using Google Chrome, as my main browser

is there a way to be able to save the bookmarks and favorites..when I restore my PC

I have another laptop that works fine, but not using..
alsi I have google+ and use gmail..if this will help at all.
as always, Thanks so much in advance!

A:How to save photos that I downloaded

I don't have an external HD or use any backup or cloud service.

You should consider purchasing an external HD [relatively inexpensive] or a USB Flash Thumb Drive [inexpensive] to copy/paste your files to. You mention 1000's of pics so if you buy a thumb drive be sure it's of adequate size. Test it first. Everyone should have one or the other. Having both is even better.
Alternatively, you could perhaps, depending on your experience & comfort level, create a new partition on your hard drive that you could copy your files to. That partition would remain untouched when you reinstall windows. A popular tool for partitioning is Easeus. It's freeware, user friendly & you can get it from here:  Last, you could start burning your pics to DVD, but it would require several Discs at the least.

can you tell me how to change this and to get the photos sorted according to the date they were taken?

Hi tamirhoresh

I use the following free application to organize my images as part of my workflow.

cam2pc - Image Viewer and fully featured Digital Imaging software to Download, Organize, Modify and Share your photos

It has a down loader that should work with your camera and will allow much finer control than any of the manufacturers offerings. It will even re-name your existing structure to what you decide to go with

It can actually create folders and image filenames from the files own internal MetaData.

There is a Paid version but have found that the freeware does everything I need.

It is compatible with MS photo programs but actually contains a good set of display options so may even replace them

I screwed up. Did disk cleanup and defrag as I regularly do and must have dumped something I normally don't do.
Any feature of HP will no longer open, though the HP "picture" launches.
Behinf the picture a window opens which I can't see or drag.
Another window, for example, Document Viewer will open. I can drag it to view it.
Regardless of the viewer window, it will say the same thing (not the exact words); the feature you are trying to use is on a cd rom or other removeable disk ...
The same deal happens with photos I downloaded from a forum. ( I downloaded them to my newer computer and they open fine).
On my XP PC, if I choose an application like IrfanView it'll say "Can't read file header! Unknown file format or file not found!
If I try to open a photo via HP Image Zone I get "the feature you are trying to use is on a cd rom or other removeable disk ..."
None of my photos will open now.
Even though I have several System Restore dates to choose from, after it runs through restore, restarts the PC, I get a window which includes "system restore incomplete".
Prior to my monthly "cleanup", all was well.
If this is of any help. The pics I download which won't open have the IrfanView logo instead of a thumbnail. Most of those pics are posted by folks via photobucket. I went to photobucket and download 3-4. One of them actually downloaded normally and the others downloaded and wouldn't op... Read more

I searched the site for a while and couldn't find an answer.... so I decided to post my question... sorry if this has been asked before.

Somehow every .IFO file on my computer (using XP) has been set to open with notepad as the default.... these files were from movies I've backed up to my computer, and when I burn the movies to a disc they burn properly, but then they won't read correctly when played on the dvd player. At first I thought it was just the type of discs I was using.. but later realized that the problem never occurred before I noticed all the .IFO files as default set to open with notepad.

What I need to know is how to set the properties of my .IFO files to read as Unknown application instead of Notepad.

Thanks ahead of time to anyone who can help.

Hi, I just bought some software called Major Markup from This package creates an HTML file to be used in the "description" section of an online auction, to help make a person's auction look prettier. I wasted no time in creating my first file, and when I was done, I saved it in My Documents with a file type called MAJ. Then when I went to open the file, it asked me what program I wanted to use to view the file. I had no idea which one to use, so I just randomly chose "Paint." Then, when I went to open the file, it said that Paint does not support that kind of file type. Now, whenever I create a new Major Markup file, it's automatically saved in Paint, but Paint won't open it. How can I save this file so that Paint won't be the program used to view the file, and which program should I use? I hope this isn't too confusing.

A:Solved: How to change the program used to view a file

OK, if it creates an html file, then the 3 letter extension at the end should be htm or html, as in Maj.htm or Maj.html. If you actually saved it as something.maj, and asked Paint to open all Maj files, then you'll never be able to use it. Go back to where you saved the ***.maj file, and renmae it to ***.htm

see if it works now.

You may need to go into the configuration opetions of the program, and make sure you have not changed the default save as file type to this .maj file. If you have, then change it back to .htm

I've searched the FAQs and this forum but can't find an answer to this simple question. Up until recently, whenever I clicked on a PDF file in Internet Explorer the file opened immediately in Acrobat Reader (I'm using Reader 8.0). But now, all the PDFs first open the main Acrobat application and then use that to open the PDF file. Annoyingly slow and lacks all the features of the Reader.

How can I change this?

Incidentally, all the PDFs downloaded to my computer automatically open in Acrobat reader, and if I right click on a PDF in IE and save it to the desktop, it also then opens in Reader. But often, I would just like to look at the file online to decide whether or not to download it. If I right click in IE and select OPEN, the once again, the file opens the main Acrobat application not the reader.

I want to change the Folder path to something that is easier to access. So how do I change the Folder path for those particular files I downloaded off Youtube?

I downloaded Norton Internet Security from the Net. Tried to install it but ran into a problem so I want to do an XP Home System Restore to a date earlier than the download. Doing so will lose all the recent downloaded Internet files so I need to find the NIS download file and burn it to CD before doing the restore. The desktop icon properties show the path but Windows Explorer only shows four temporary Internet folders, I think it creates new ones for each session, and I cannot find earlier ones. I've tried "show hidden files" but without success and have run a search in Explorer as well.

Any suggestions on how I can find older downloaded Internet files?

A:Where does IE6 put the downloaded program files?

Where the download is saved depends on your browser settings and whether you selected a folder at the time.
If you can remember the name of the downloaded file (or part of it) you can do a search for that file. If you cannot remember go back to the download site and follow the links to download and at some stage the filename will be visible.

Hi. I have downloaded a legal program but don't understand how to install it. The instructions said to extract the rar file which I've done but no joy. The instructions seem to assume some knowledge! I have the following files: an nfo file, 21 files named *.r00, *.r01 etc, an sfv file and a rar file which I have extracted...there are now a bin file and a cue file in an extracted files folder. What on earth do I do next? Please can someone help me with step by step instructions for a complete dummy !! Thanks.

A:Installing a downloaded program

Hello Rubi. I am a little confused with what kind of file you want help with so I am providing the instructions regarding the *.bin and *.cue files.

How Do I Use or Open Bin, Cue, or ISO Files?

If you are looking for instructions on extracting the *.rar and *.r01 files, then please go here.

With Vista it's a good idea to right click on the installer and select "Run as administrator".

The Norton one will be your update ActiveX,
The Flash is macromedia ActiveX control.

Both can be deleted,

However when you next update Norton it will be reinstalled, and by deleting the shockwave control will mean you will not be able to view some websites properly

Both are legitimate controls and can be safely left on your system

In Internet Explorer, when I look at:
Tools->Internet Options->General Tab, Browsing History, Settings->View Objects
a window pops up titled C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files. I came across this while trying to resolve another problem....which will be in another post and has nothing to do with this post.

The status of one of the files is "Damaged" and I have no idea if it should be deleted and reinstalled or deleted and not reinstalled, or just left alone. It also states the install date was on 4/29/05 (which would be before I purchased this HP Pavilion laptop--I purchased it after September 2005). The last access date for the program states today, 12/7/07.
Here is the program file description:
Under Properties is the following info:
ActiveX Control
Status: Damaged
Code Base:

Would this damaged program be affecting the performance of my laptop? Since it's been installed since I've owned it, I wouldn't know if the performance is slower than it should be or not, or why the laptop is accessing a damaged file (and what happens when it does access this damaged file???)

Any info would be greatly appreciated....

Windows 8 uses the SmartScreen filter to perform an application reputation check, and it now does system wide (not just when downloading programs with Internet Explorer like it did before).

In Windows 7 when launching these downloaded applications, you get the following notification:

In Windows 8, SmartScreen will only notify you when you run an application that has not yet established a reputation and therefore is a higher risk:

The user experience for applications with an established reputation is simple and clean: you just click and run, removing the prompt you would have seen in Windows 7.

My computers are both running Win 7 64-bit. I am thoroughly confused when it comes to placing programs that I download into their proper folders: That is, program files (x86) vs program files. I have read stuff on this, but still confused. for the most part, even when a dl'd program suggests being installed into PF, I, for whatever reason, place it into PF (x86). Although I have read that placing the program into the wrong folder may cause the program not to work properly, so far I have not had this problem...nor any other problems that I am aware of. Could someone please set me straight on this issue?

I hope this helps you, and no, I have no ties to irfanview.

Hi..I'm looking for some advice here..I cannot remove a program that was downloaded from bearshare. I've tried restarting in safe mode, going into deleting the program, but it keeps asking me to insert the disk I originally downloaded from--and I don't have it.

A:Can't Remove Program Downloaded From Bearshare

Short Answer: Download, install, and use the trial version of Uninstall Plus! You can download it from HERE. This program can often succeed at uninstalling programs that otherwise are stubborn to remove.Long Answer: Using peer to peer websites is one of the top ways computers get infected. You have to ask yourself "Why would someone give me something of value (such as music) for free?" The answer is that bundled with the free something is a malicious something that you don't want on your computer. My guess is that you are experiencing other buggy behavior from this computer as well. If so, chances are good that you are infected. If you believe you are infected, then consider posting a High Jack This! log in the HJT forum here at Bleeping Computer. To find out more, read the Preparation Guide found HERE. It is very important that you follow ALL of the instructions found within before actually posting the log.

I have "Damaged" downloaded program files, all of them at this status. What the heck could cause this? And what are these files in the first place? I have copied them prior to this damaged thing, on floppy disks. Do not know what the heck to do with the copies, but have them.
1-What are these "downloaded program files" and what do they mean to me, my system?
2-What could have caused them all to show as "damaged" in the status of each file? How do I figure out what caused this so it does not repeat itself? (had only 1 prob that day, with install of Microsoft updates?). Really think I should find out if I did something naughty that system did not approve of, so I can apologize to it and fix it up so it is happy with me again.
3-How do I use the copies of these files, if I need to, and do the "out with the old, in with the new" do I install the new files back into the system and get the damaged ones out?
Thanx for you help, again...have a great day!!

A:Damaged Downloaded Program Files?? What's this all about??

Downloaded program files are ActiveX controls and Java programs that are downloaded automatically from the Internet when viewing certain pages. They are temporarily stored in the Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk.

These can include perfectly legitimate applications, like Macromedia Flash player, Quicktime player, the Google toolbar installer, and the like, but also spyware.

The best way to view them is as follows:

Go to Internet Options > Temp Internet Files > Settings > Show Objects.

If any of them are damaged, right click them, and choose Remove from the context menu.

You'll just be prompted to download them again whenever Windows or an application needs them.

All of the Downloaded Program Files on my WinXP were listed as "damaged". So... I went off road and just simply deleted the file...the Downloaded Programs File, not each seperate file, as I had some type of error when I tried to do so, I believe something about the file was being used somewhere else, to close everything and try again, but would not delete no matter what I closed down.

Now, go figure, there is no longer a Downloaded Program File on the system.

My question is...does this return when there are new files that are downloaded for use? Or???? This is sounding more and more like an X-Files case...should have not cancelled the show!

Good evening everyone---

First, I will state that I'm using WinXP Home and IE6...

I was wondering if anyone could please tell me how to get the files within the C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files folder to appear? It used to display all the active x controls and plugins that I had downloaded, but now it shows zero items? However when I right click on the folder and choose properties it says it contains 6 files. They also do not appear under add/remove programs in control panel.

I would like to get these files to appear, so that I can right click on them and choose the remove option.

If it isn't possible to get these items to appear, is there some command I can execute in order to remove/unregister these active x controls/plugins?

Much Thanks in advance!

I'm using the MS Resource Monitor and its showing that SyncItGUI is downloading a lot of data. I live in India so I have limited bandwidth. Is there a tool that will log how much total SyncItGUI is downloading? It runs in the background. The Resource Monitor just shows the current rate of download (i.e. the download speed). I want to know how much it downloads in total. Any tools can do this? I did an internet search and didn't find anything. I also looked at the Windows logs and didn't find anything. Thanks,

My wife has her separate user account in Windows 10 and I have mine. She needed to download Jobulator for her work. It asked for my password since I am listed as administrator. While she was signed on her account via Windows 10, she downloaded Jobulator. Now, when I sign on to my account I see her program listed and sitting on my screen. It stays on top of other windows and in reality I don't need or require the program. If I delete if from my main Windows screen will it delete it from her use? Thanks for the help.

I have an HP Pavilion running Vista home premium.

When I am cleaning my computer out at the end of the day, I open up internet options and "veiw objects", which brings up my DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES folder.

In there are 3 or 4 active x files.

But 1 in particular has a status of DAMAGED.

Vista is different in that I cannot just delete this damaged file, like I could in XP, or in earlier windows versions.

All I can do is right click it, which brings up a "properties" link.

This damaged file is an active x file, and the "code base" reads like this: dot cab (I changed this to read 'dot com' because it appears to be a direct hyperlink to my computers files...and I dont know if anyone could click on this and open my, i added the dot com)

The link takes me to a gp[1] file that looks like it originates from my adobe illustrator installation, and inside this file are several Adobe GetPlus application files, a .dll and a .ocx active x file.

Here is the explorer folder trail to this GetPlus folder that is apparently corrupted.

Temporary Internet Files>Low>Content IE.5>PO6ALQ9S>gp[1] (which appears to be a cab file, as it has that icon that looks like a two drawer blue file cabinet with the bottom drawer half open).

This thing was created 11/2006, but I cannot remember if tha... Read more

I downloaded an alarm clock program, and it's pretty cool, so I kept it. I wanted to keep it on top so I right clicked it and clicked a word I can no longer remember, but it wasn't "keep on top". Now my mouse cursor treats it as if it is no longer there (can't click on it) and the program, which name I can't remember, isn't in the add/remove programs list nor is it in google.history...So I'm confused, is this spyware? it seems like a cool little program, and it works fine, but since I chose the wrong command when I right clicked it I can't set up alarms like I wanted too. I need help......

I have Windows XP 2005 which had the Norton Security pack with McAfee Firewall and McAfee Anitivirus. The antivirus expired. Oops on my part. I purchased and downloaded The Shield Deluxe 2008. Immediately I had windows popping up that stated - Detected: Riskware: Invader and messages of processes trying to inject into other processes. I have no clue what this means or the action to take. Is anyone familiar with this? I uninstalled the McAfee antivirus from Add/Remove. I don't know if I should uninstall The Shield or if it is actually working. Is there hope?

Hi, I am still having a problem trying to get rid of a file dealing with Dialer.one0none. The only time this shows up is when running Norton Anti Virus scan, as being in c:/windows/downloaded program files\109554.exe. I cannot delete it using NAV. When searching for this file, it is no where to be found.
My question is this, Can I delete the entire contents of the c:/windows/downloaded program files? Maybe this would get rid of it.
I am running Windows XP Home ed. I am on cable and do not have my phone connected to the computer. There don't seem to be any problems other than this keeps coming up on my virus scan as a threat and when I try to delete it, it fails. I have tried the Safe Mode way, also have submitted a HJT Log earlier. I just need to know if the c:/windows/downloaded program files is needed. Thanks for your help. Roger

yes, you can safely delete the contents of that folder.

So I accidentally downloaded an antivirus program that is really a virus.

It really sucks. Internet explorer refuses to work. Task manager has been disabled by the administrator. Any program that operates under windows explorer fails to run properly. This makes it very difficult to use the computer.
What exactly is wrong? Do I need to repair the registry? What if I did not make a backup?
This problem has been plaguing me for a long time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Had a few machines that do this now, after the infection is COMPLETELY gone... you get couldn't be downloaded for anything you download in IE. Repairing/Reinstalling IE doesn't help, replacing windows defender program folder does not help.
Experienced this on vista/7 x86/x64

A:How to fix "program couldn't be downloaded" in IE after removing infections?

FYI works in other profiles, not just the one that was originally infected... so it's some sort of registry key issue for currentuser

A:Opening A Downloaded Program Get A Error Message

Hello and to BC

First and foremost about this, have you scanned your computer for Any sort of malware before / after doing this download as it may be infected, Just a thought

Secondly, what type of program are you trying to download, if its a simple program such as an AV , or a free game or something like that, from a trusted site, it should not be giving you an error such as that

if its an older exe file maybe it just won't work with your xp, Just a couple of thoughts to toss out there
Hope to hear from you soon

Hi Bleeping Computer,
A cracked program was installed onto my computer. I scanned my computer with malwarebytes and got rid of it, but I saw the program listed in the startup tab in the task manager menu.
I disabled it, ran malwarebytes again and the anti-virus said my computer was clean. I still see the cracked program listed and am not sure if my computer is actually clean.
Can you please help me determine if my computer is actually free of malware?
Thanks for your time

I am using the Windows XP Home operating system. I have been using Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 to organize my photos. Today in a Windows small window I mistakenly selected 3.0 as my default program for 'always' importing photos from my camera or my disc drive. I would like to deselect 3.0 and switch the default setting to Elements 5.0 but I don't know how to do it. Since I selected 'always' perform this action I am not seeing the pop up window any longer which would allow me to change my setting. I recently installed 5.0 and it is coexisting on my harddrive with 3.0 for now. Any help on switching the import setting to 5.0 will be much appreciated. Thanks - jh191

I wonder if there is a program out there that will do what I am asking for here. I need a program that can take thousands of photos in a single folder, and automatically put them into folders by date, based on the file header of the images.. If I have to manually do it.. fine, but I am looking for a program that can make it easier..

Thanks.. I know this is not necessarily 7 related, but, I am running windows 7 as an OS.. if that helps..

A:Best program for organizing photos into folders..

Breeze systems Downloader Pro does exactly this.
Ive been using it for a few years and it works really well.
It will even create folders on the fly.

And it works fine under Windows 7 (only tried 32bit though)

My daughter goes to a place that has a "photo machine" that takes a picture and turns it into what looks like a pencil drawing.

I'm not sure if it takes the pictures and does it, or if you bring your own pictures and put it in.

They come out beautiful!

I thought Photoshop and/or Paint Shop Pro would do this, but it isn't the same. It comes out dark (charcoal) and not that delicate sketch look. Even if I turn the picture b&w first.

I was going to look it up in search or on download sites but don't even know what to call it.

Someone here will know!

Okay, I just noticed there is a Graphics topic, has that always been here? My first thought was software.

I tried to delete this, so I could repost it there, and it says only moderators can delete the first post of a thread.

I shouldn't try and think this late at night. (LOL)
