Solved: quality of printed pictures...

Q: Solved: quality of printed pictures...

I am so hoping someone knows the answer to this very perplexing problem... I thought it was my printer so I bought a new one and I have the same problem. I print a picture of my granddaughter, who has these wonderful chubby cheeks.........until it is printed and the chubby cheeks are gone. She has slimmed right down...... lol I have been struggling with this problem for quite a while now, have asked everyone who comes within two feet of me and no ones knows how to fix this or what is even causing it. I know someone here will know. I have never had a problem that this site has not been able to fix for me. : ) Thanks, in advance.

Oh yes, and new printer is an Epson 835 al-in-one and my old one is an HP photosmart 2575

I have a cannon mp210 all in one printer, scanner. When placing actual photos into the machine to be scanned then printed they come out perfectly fine but when I try to print pictures already imported onto my computer they come out very faint/light. The computer keeps saying the ink levels are low which is incorrect as I have just put in new ones. I beleive this is a issue to do with the colour settings installed on windows 7 as our pictures print out fine when the printer is connected to our lap top. If anyone could help me with changing the colour settings that would be great. Thank you

I have searched to find an answer to this problem of faded pictures when printed from windows photo gallery. I have seen a few others having the same problem, but no solutions. I am hoping that someone now can help.

I can print pictures from other software on my computer, from the internet, etc, with great photo quality. When I print from Windows photo gallery they are very light and faded looking. I have made sure the adjustments are for my printer.

It seems that most of the people experiencing this problem had canon printers. Does anyone have a solution to this?

Thanks
Pam

I have found the solution to this problem, you need to untick the checkbox for "borderless printing", this is how to do it:

SOLUTION:

When you click print, go to Options > Printer Properties

Click on the "Page Setup" tab, then Untick the box that says "Borderless Printing"

I am unable to print pictures completely. I print them from Picasa on HP photosmart C4250. When I try to print, although the preview is correct, the printed result is not. Part of a picture will come out, or the image starts at the end of the paper and is therefore incomplete. Until now, everything worked properly.

I have an Access database used on daily basis to enter and print the maintenance work order in a report format. I have assigned a command button to print the required record. On clicking the button in the Form, a parameter query will run asking the user to put the record number to proceed. Once the correct record number is entered in the parameter text box, the report is previewed and the user click on the print button to print the same.

My question is as follows:

Is there any method to find out the record i am going to print now was already printed before? A kind of record keeping for the printed records.

Also, a message box should warn the user saying incase if the record was already printed, “The record was previously printed, do you want to continue printing again?”

Please tell me a way to perform the above in my Form.
Thanks,

I made this script (powershell, included in Windows 7+), and thought someone here might find it useful, what it does is do a google image search for every picture in a directory, and save the biggest result in a target directory, using the same name if it's bigger than the original source. So you can review the pictures, than just copy them over top. I found it useful since I save a lot of pictures I find on the web, and it's tedious to upload them to Google Image Search to find better versions one at a time.

Usage: get-large-pics.ps1 c:\source_dir c:\target_dir

Also uploaded it to PowerShell Code Repository - Get-Large-Pics.ps1

*Updated this morning - this version should be much better, now it only downloads the biggest
image by analyzing the http header content length properties, instead of downloading all the images
and comparing their sizes to find the largest*
Update #2: Filter out files that are not *.jpg, *.gif, *.png, *.jpeg

Code:

# get-large-pics.ps1 - takes two arguments, source directory and target directory.
# all files in source directory are uploaded to google image search one by one,
# and in turn it downloads the resulting pictures and saves the largest picture,
# in the target directory, using the same file name as the source file.
# so you can just, after verifying the pictures are correct, copy the target directory to the source directory,
# to have larger versions of all your pictures.
# If no target directory is specified, it will use ... Read more

Hi

I suspect this might be a fairly common problem. Whenever I print there also seems to be a block of about 5 fine lines printed over the text for about ever new line of text. Now I recently bought a new (high capacity) cartridge which costs a fortune, so I'm not too keen to buy another if it is the printer (about 6 years old) which is the problem.

Has anyone else had the same sort of problem?

I recently acquired a Canon EOS Rebel T1i (500D) 15.1 mp. Previously, I had a Canon PowerShot A80 (4.0 mp).

Here's my question. Whenever I try to print a photo from my Canon i860 printer, the picture is a lot brighter than the image on screen (overexposed). I need to darken the picture significantly before printing it, in order to get a ressemblant result on paper. When I was printing a photo from my PowerShot A80, the result was almost identical to the image on screen.

Does this have anything to do with my new camera's higher resolution? Would I need to lower the resolution in order to match the printer's capacity?

This is becoming annoying and I really would like to find a solution.

Thank you.

Hi,
I formatted my drive after I saved my favorites and my pictures to CD. Formatting cleared up the problem of two dial up connections. I tried everything on that. The duplicate connection is no more. Finally! Anyway, back to why I am posting again. I want to put the pictures that I saved from the My Pictures folder back to the My Pictures folder. I have set one of them as the new desktop background. (It was before the format). I have looked in Help and Support, but I can't seem to find anything. I have typed in "Export Pictures from CD to My Pictures folder" without the quotes and I get a list of links pertaining to CD recording errors and other things like that. I did right click on a picture in Drive E (my CD-RW) just to see what would come up and I noticed that on the Send To menu that these pictures can be sent to the desktop. Is this what I should do then? Send them to the desktop and open them and send them from here to the My Pictures folder? It can't be that easy, can it? Let me hear from anybody.

I am using an old Dell with XP and Internet Explorer 7. When previewing some images I have stored in My Pictures, I find when using the 'previous' and 'next' buttons I am able to pull up the next or previous pictures as I should. But when I e-mail an image to myself and then use the 'next' or 'previous' buttons, I begin to get images from web sites I have recently visited even if it is just my home page. While scanning my home page, for instance, I collect dozens of images in a matter of minutes. The 'properties' of these images show when they were created and this began on 11/27/08. The only change I have made recently is a download of info from a digital camera disc to enable me to store pictures from my new camera. I did a system restore to a couple of days before that download but I'm still copying dots, dashes, logos and pictures or frames from videos. Is this something anyone has encountered or heard of? I'm wearing out my delete button. Thanks for any advice you can give.

Hi everyone
When i installed the OS and then updated the direct X 9.0c with updates of direct X June 2010 redist file.
I have done this previously when i had to install the OS again due to some problems. This direct X upgrade enhanced the visual quality on my LCD. (well i don't notice much difference in desktop quality, but yes there is remarkable difference in quality in some 720p or 1080p videos, when played before installed direct X upgrade, it had a whitish color, but with updating the direct X, it became crystal clear).
Recently i found a new version of VLC player has come and i installed that updated version, but it was don't know a defective version, had sound issues, i uninstalled the new version and installed the older version and things working fine.
Coming to the point, now again the video quality is fallen back as prior to installing direct X update, it has a whitish sheet like thing all over, i mean quality is not that clear as it was with direct X update. What i do of this issue?
My graphic card driver is updated and running fine and now that i check for direct X update, there is no more.

Alrighty, so i make backgrounds for my computer. I have never had any quality issues when using XP, i save is png so there isn't any scattering around edges. I have been running 7 on my laptop since it came out. I just noticed that wallpapers (they are proper resolution, 1280x800 which is my laptops native resolution) have major quality loss. The image file looks just as it should, but when it is set to my background it looks terrible.

Original - http://i38.tinypic.com/5547tc.jpg

When on desktop - http://i38.tinypic.com/256bx8g.jpg

Please note the following:
On the desktop one i put a square around the most noticeable area.
If you tip your computer screen, the quality loss is easier seen.
Whether or not you believe it is noticeable, it is to me =/
No, uploading did not cause any more drop in quality of the desktop image.

What do i do to resolve this. Also, i never really noticed it until windows update, although that may be coincidence.

Added to that, the only things i have done recently have been windows update and installing quicktime. I have never had this problem when i ran my laptop on XP (also, i have another computer running XP that this problem doesn't occur on).

I will repeat though, it is the native size so windows isn't resizing it at all. I have tried stretch, tile, fill, etc.

A:(Solved) bad picture quality

Norton anti-virus has probably screwed your video card settings:
First thing to try is..

Right Click on Desktop, and choose properties.
Then choose the settings tab.
Check that your colour quality is set to 16 bit or 32 bit on the drop-down menu.

This is the most obvious solution, but if there are only 16 colours as an option your driver has been corrupted.
Then you would on the Settings window, go to advanced and then adapter.
From here you would click on properties and go to driver, click on update driver and point to the cd-rom holding the driver (specify full path).
Restart computer and that should be you operational.

I am converting vinyl to CDs. Is there any difference between the blank CD's (CD-R) of various manufacturers? I understand that "private brand" CD's may not have the same manufacturing quality control as name brand CD's, so I have, so far stayed with the name brands (e.g., Memorex).

Are there any objective test reports on various brands available on the web (so far my Google searches haven't identified any)?

I searched this forum without success.

Can anyone help?

A:Solved: Blank CD Quality

Here's some good info on DVD media http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm and much of it applies to CD's as well. The same companies that make good DVD's also make good CD's. The two best are Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim.

Here are some test results on CD's: http://club.myce.com/f77/

You can also find some good deals here: http://club.myce.com/f58/

When you record the vinyl it's good to save the wave files if you have enough disk space. Then you can always burn audio CD's or convert to FLAC or Mp3. The wave files will be the highest quality sound you can get. CD's don't last forever.

so i'm a new quality assurance tester in a fairly new company, and new to these forums! =P any ways...

so my boss (SW lead) needs me to find a vast variety in the three main media types (picture, audio, video)

meaning i need all different file extensions and encoded with different codecs.

my first thought was to just use a media converter, but this only results in me having about ten different file extensions, but that doesn't take care of the different codecs being used... or does it?

i need all this by the end of the week ideally, i know it's not a technical support type of problem, but i think there's got to be someone on here that's been in the industry long enough to give me a quick fix

any ideas, suggestions at all?

As the heading says.......... Well not quite.

My problem is that I have photos that I'm using as buttons on my web page. The trouble is that because they are of good quality they are taking ages to load. As they are buttons they don't need to be of good quality.

Can anyone tell me how to reduce the quality so they load quicker?

I would like to watch movies, browse web and look at photos.

I have tried to connect S-video from Laptop (4 pin + plastic) to S-video TV (7 pin + plastic) but get an unclear (fuzzy) picture. As well as the picture flickering occasionally, it also appears black and white after a while.

TV is: Panasonic TX 56P800H

This is a problem which has mystified me since I bought my new PC a few months ago. When I burn a cd from a mp3 file and play it back in my hifi's CD player - the sound is great. However, when I play the original mp3 source file though the same hifi (connected via cable from PC sound card to hifi aux connection), the sound quality is very poor in comparison. On my much older, previous PC, using the same sound card to hifi aux method worked great, but I just can't work out what's gone wrong with my new PC.

Here are the ports - I've tried both the rear line out port (olive green) and front headphone port, with both producing low quality sound. Thanks for any advice.

I wasn't really sure where to post this but since this is the multi-media section I figured this might be a good place to post it. I have a question regarding recording something using the "Unregistered Hypercam 3" I downloaded from Cnet, not how to record video but how to record good sound.

I love music and finally sat down and wrote a song I feel proud of using a copy of Finale Notepad I have had on my computer and haven't touched since highschool. I know software wise it is nothing compared to the full version of Finale, but it does what I need it to do.

Now to my question, I have searched all over the internet for a video or instructions and I have absolutely no problem recording the video and the quality of the video is amazing! The problem is that everytime I record sound with it, it is all scratchy and the mic must be really sensitive because every noise in my house comes out on the recording and the actual sound from the song I am getting sounds like a 80's trash metal garage band decided to never tune up and to add banjo (no hate towards the banjo I play one periodically ) and the set their instruments on fire (does that tell you how bad it sounds when I record it?)

Is there anyway I can record the video and sound without all the extra noises which seem to go on at my house and in a way where the recording will sound like it does when I hit playback on the Finale software. I don't know anything about audio recording software and down... Read more

My two computers share my monitor, keyboard and speakers through a KVM switch. I recently got a new 3pc. amplified speaker system. It sounds good on one computer and not on the other. Sound cuts in and out. I've tested this both with a game and a music CD with the same result. The same CD plays ok (though a little crackly on the other system -- I believe that is just the proximity of the components, right?). What can I do about the sound on the second system?

I've also checked each of the connections and verified they are plugged in completely -- the only thing I haven't done is opened up the computer itself and checked on where the sound card meets the motherboard. The old speaker system was working fine.

Since I could not edit my previous post, this is the update to my ip4700 poor print quality post.

I worked on this problem some more to gain better photos from my Canon ip4700. I removed all reference to my past canon printer ip4000 using both program removal and control panel program add/remove function. I removed ip4700 the same way. Started fresh. Installed ZoomBrowser EX from CD. Then I downloaded and installed the latest drivers from Canon for the ip4700 and my computer op system xp http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer iP4700 series Printer Driver Ver. 2.33; My Printer Ver. 2.8.0; Easy-PhotoPrint EX Ver. 3.2.0; and Solution Menu Ver. 1.4.3. And all is well and good. I tried two different glossy photo paper brands and set on glossy paper and no more over ink of photos. The photos look very good.

I have had a Canon PowerShot A60 for several years. It has given me superb pictures. It ceased to function, and I purchased a Canon PowerShot A1100 IS with image stabiliser, thinking I would get at least the same quality of pictures. To my great disappointment, the quality of the pictures does not compare with the A60. So, I had my A60 repaired by Canon approved repairers at considerable cost for replacing the CCD unit. Now 9 months later the camera has broken down again, and the same repairer is looking for the same amount of money again for replacing the CCD unit. The first repair was only guaranteed for six months. I just have to give up on the A60. Can anyone tell me if there is any camera on the market that takes really good quality pictures. Allan.

hi
there is something which i noted recently.
when you install windows 7 and windows xp,there is a difference in color quality of both the OS. any image(on desktop wallpaper) would appear more vibrant and brighter in windows 7 than XP, is it something which i noticed or is it something that is real.
is it due to some directX or some other thing?

can this be achieved on windows xp?

p.s with image quality i meant the graphics quality with same wallpaper on both OS.there is difference in color vibrancy and hue saturation on same machine, same lcd.

A:[SOLVED] windows xp vs 7 - image quality

Win7 allows you to calibrate the color on the display> Change color management settings

But first make sure you are using the latest nvidia drivers> Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

Have the resolution set the same on both installations.

And if there is a driver disk for your monitor make sure that has been installed.

I tried cleaning the inside and outside of the printer with a dry cloth, but that didn't work. Any other suggestions?

You need to install the correct XP drivers for your video card. The ones it is using now are just XP Generic VGA drivers. While XP install CD has a great many drivers, in many cases they are either generic drivers or ones dating from 2002 when XP was released.
It is always best to get the proper drivers for your hardware as soon as possible. The generic ones included with the install cd are just there to allow you to get up and running and provide basic functionality so you can install the correct ones from your product CDs or download them from the manufacturers support web sites.

I think that I have a misconception about compressed files. I assume that all compressed files lose their quality from a non-compressed files, because of smaller size they have. Can someone explain a correct concept about compressed files and their quality to me? Are those mp3, jpg, and so forth really lose their original quality? Also, sometimes, I am asked to choose to zip or not zip when I save a file. I never dare to zip it, because I am afraid that I would lose the quality of it. Am I wrong about it, too?

Thanks

A:Solved: quality of compressed files

JPG and MP3 files are created using "lossy" compression. There is non-recoverable loss of informaton. Most programs allow various amounts of compression that offers different trade-offs between smaller file size or less loss.

A ZIP file is created will lossless compression that permits unzipping the file to its original contents without loosing any data. A zip file also contains a checksum that the un-Zipping software uses to confirm the zip file contents are not corrupted.

not really
it all depends on what speed the video uploader set as his default
BUT if you have a youtube or google account and they are linked, then log into your yourtube account & select settings. then playback
there are 2 options there that might help.

Always choose the best quality for my connection and player size is default setting or you can chose I have a slow connection. Never play higher-quality video

Hi

Whilst watching different video files, a problem popped up out of the blue. I couldn't open videofiles. The error message is: "no supported format or not the right codecs". I could however open these video files in VLC, but the quality is poor. The images are grainy.

I installed the K-lite FULL codec pack, which enabled me to open the files with WMP but the image is black and if I jump forward in the file I get the same error message. VLC is still grainy. Media player classic came with the codec pack, and although it can play the files, this also has poor quality images.

Help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Hello when installing K-Lite did you choose the option 'Create File Associations for Windows Media Player'. If not then it will have created them for Media Player Classic which would be a reason why it still doesn't play with WMP.

A:Solved: Dropping quality/size of images

If it is a photograph, try converting and saving it as a JPEG (.JPG extension) file. JPEG is a lossy compression program where you can control the amount of compression vs. picture quality.

If it is more of a graphic image with larger areas of solid color and a BMP pixel depth of 8 bits-per-pixel or less, try saving it as a GIF image. It will be compressed without any loss in quality.

I have never used it but a lot of people on TSG recommend Irfanview as a good program for converting many different image file formats to GIF or JPEG.

Hi,

I have come across a strange problem with Firefox (2.0.0.6). It has started only downloading images in very low quality - this means that transparency comes out as a grey box and every image seems to be in 16 colours or similar - where it looks flat and photos look very blurred - like they've got glue on them on or something. IE does not have this problem.

I have recently been using my laptop to get online via my phone, which acts as a modem and gives access to the net via the mobile phone network. The throughput on this is smaller than normal broadband - that may have something to do with it. But I'm now back on normal internet, have restarted etc, and still Firefox is only downloading images in low quality. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks for your help!

I can also then put converted files into Windows Movie Maker for some editing.

I imagine the reason for your dismal photos results from your choice of "generic photo paper" Your Canon printer is capable of outstanding photo prints if you use the right type of paper. The Canon papers are excellent but all to often they are very very expensive. I have gotten great results using "Ilford Gallerie Smooth Gloss Paper" purchased at Sams Club. Price was about $21 per 100 sheets 8.5x11.0. I also get good results using "Kodak Ultra Premium Photo Paper" also purchased at Sam's for about $22 for 200 sheets 4"x6".

Hello, I'm new to this forum, and as such I have no clue where to post this, so, as I'm using vista, I figured I might as well post it here. Mods, please move this to the appropriate forum.

So, I'm using audacity, and recording the audio playing through my computer. Essentially, I'm recording what's coming through my speakers. The sound itself is crisp and clear. Upon playback of the recording, the dialogue is very hollow, and if there's music, the notes have a lot of static with them.
I have tested several things, including changing my Sterio Mix volume and quality. It's currently set at 16 bit 44100Hz. I have tried increasing the Hz, but that actually reduced the quality.

To sum it up, the original output is excellent, but the recording is low quality. Could anyone help with this? Thanks.

I have reconfigured this twice on all 3 and they still act like they are set to keep printed jobs in the queue.

Anyone seen this and know of a solution, on the Microsoft site I am seeing posts but not a single reply about how to either run a job to clear them out a couple times a day or fix this so they act as configured. To NOT keep printed jobs in the queue.

Any help as always is much appreciated.

The race to solution is on, let's see who can figure this one out first.

Other than dogging the print preview, and struggling with the size in any pertinent image editing software, has anyone found a reliable way to limit or control the size of a printed web document?
to wit:
I scanned an odd shaped document, 3x8" to email to myself at another site, and the printed form was big enough for two pages. What a waste.
I print receipts regularly and they, 99% of the time have a "trailer" on a last page that has stuff like web site address or URL, a Secure Website emblem, or other, clearly unnecessary printing. My introduction to Windows word processing (WordPerfect) had, and I still use, a "makeitfit" command. Invoking such a command AUTOMATICALLY when printing from the web seems like a simple, brainless way to conserve paper...it'll give me a fractional font (e.g. 11.9 vs. a 12) and would prevent the idiotic tendency of a printed page to only have the leftward 80%, l which leaves off the important stuff like the prices...(you gotta print landscape to avoid this)
And I thought a computer was to make life easier, boy was I ever misled)

A:printed size of web documents

The problem is that web pages are usually coded to make them look good on screen, and that tends to make them "unfriendly" when printing.

Web pages designed for printing do exist, and it works well in those (few) cases.

Cutting and pasting into a word processor is sometimes the only workable solution.

Don't print much multi page output, so am NOT sure when this problem began.

Originally, the pages on my HP DJ855C were printed as expected: page-1 first, then page-2, etc; this resulted with page-1 being on the bottom of the stack. Depending on the application being used, there was often a Print-Order option available for Back-to-Front printing so that the last page would be printed first and then page-1 would be printed last and be on the top in the stacker.

NOW, things seem to have reversed:
If I do NOT ask for the Back-to-Front, then I seem to get it anyway (i.e., page-1 last and on the top). but if I want the original order (i.e., page-1 first and on the bottom) then I must use the Back-to-Front option.
It seems as though the default has become Back-to-Front and then selecting the option for Back-to-Front re-reverses the order and the result is Front-to-Back.

Possibly this reversal happened when I went to Win/XP; possibly it happened with the installation of some piece of software.

Q. Has anyone else had this exxperience?

Please tell me where I might change some parameter to make the option of Front-to-Back actually print the page-1 first like it did originally?

Any advice apprecaited.

Thanks,,

A:Order of Pages Printed

Digger,

Go into your printers and faxes options off of your start menu.

Select your printer, right click the mouse and click on printing preferences.
On the features tab at the bottom there is a option for start printing from last page. If there is a check mark in the box next to it, click there with the mouse and uncheck it and then click on apply and ok and you should be all set after that?

Hi all,

Well not sure if this is the right area for this but not really sure what the problem is.

When I boot my PC during the bootup dos stage I hear my PC making noises, it still boots up Windows 7 ok but as soon as I open something I get continious R type accross my screen, If I hit the caps lock it changes from R to r.

Thought it was my keyboard having the R locked down so tried to fix it, no luck. Changed keyboards with my spare one no luck. Disconnect all keyboards no luck.

So where is this R coming from, its impossible to us my PC at the moment as soon as you click somewhere (word, exel, Google etc) an R/r appears.

Any ideas where to start?

From Windows Answers:

I believe it is a problem with the "photowiz.dll" file in system32. It is version 6.x.xxxx.xxxx. I found an older version of this file, had to change the attributes and permissions of the file to allow it to be changed. I renamed it with an "dlx" extension and then copied a version 5.1 photowiz.dll to system32 and the print wizard works again! The site I got the file from is: http://www.dlldump.com/download-dll-files_new.php/dllfiles/P/photowiz.dll/5.1.2600.2180/download.html

The problem I am having is that when I go to print tax return forms from the IRS site or New York Tax Dept site, the form prints "short", that is, the last four or five lines of each page do not print.

You cannot save the data in these forms, they will only save as a blank form. Your only option is to print it.

However, although Adobe tells how to cure this problem ( by clicking File-Print and going down the menu which comes up to "printer scaling", then chosing "print to fit page", this only works if there is a
FILE menu on the left hand side of the page.

In these tax sites, the forms do not have a tool bar above allowing you to chose a FILE menu.
You can right click the mouse and chose PRINT, however it will print a cut off page.

SOOOOOOO ..how do I either:
1. Get a standard Tool Bar to appear on top of the form, on these web site pages, or
2. use some other device or method to print these documents to fit the page.

If any of you are about to suggest right clicking on the printer icon PRINTERS, in the control panel, forget it....my printer does not bring up anything about "Print Scaling".

Hopefully, some geek out there will read this and solve my problem. Thank you. 44 Guy

A:printed pages cut off at bottom

Every computerized tax form that I have seen...is available at the website of the sponsoring governmental agency...and reflects a printed version option which has resulted in everything being printed properly.

I'm not sure where Adobe figures into tax preparation.

If you are using a 3d-party app to do taxes...then the problem resides with the support for that application, IMO.

I'm new here!

First I would like to say I'm a TBI survivor and I'm a male and 42 years old .
I was purchased an emachine computer with a Lexmark lasar printer,
Whenever I go to print something, be it a web site article or a personal document that was created using Microsoft Works Word Processor. Whatever is being printed my name appears at the VERY top and the city and state printed at the bottom.
I know little about computers so I'm trying to get an answer why this is being printed.
The only thing that I can come up with is MY NAME, CITY and STATE was somehow entered on this computer's Hard drive and is prints it because it's been entered by someone at the store before iyt was brought home and set up for me.

If there is someway that I can delete this info. being printed, PLESE tell me what to do EXACTLY!

Thank You!
Chaz-62

A:I'm new her! Why is my name, town and state being printed?

That's very strange, it sounds like a 'Header and Footer' has been set up with that info and is in your normal.dot template. (If Works uses such a template, I know Word does).
Try doing a Find (or Search depending on your version of Windows) for normal.dot and rename any found to normal.old. Then test the printing again. If there is a problem you change the names back again.

I have a ton of old cassette tapes of conversations and parties that I want to make MP3s of before they bite it, just for nostalgia. The original quality is amateur and crummy, and some are beat up and decades old. But I'm not looking to tweak the sound now, only to create a digital set that retains all existing audio data and volume. (When I say "retains all," I don't mean to the extent of saving in a big lossless format. However I'll be using Audacity, and will also keep the raw .aup versions of a few in case I do want to tweak someday.)

Q1: I'm thinking recording in 32kbps, 44 khz mono will be more than enough to duplicate the existing quality? Those parameters even sound ok to me on other talk recordings like podcasts. And I'm guessing anything higher/better would just be a waste of space in this case.

Q2: If I do make mono recordings, would using my laptop's internal microphone jack (with a standard 3.5mm audio cable) be just as good as using the stereo line-in jack on my desktop PC? If it doesn't matter, the laptop would be a lot more convenient.

I made a couple test recordings the above way and I *think* they sound the same as the originals… However I didn't and would rather not take the time to do more extensive comparison tests, e.g. also making stereo versions and versions of higher quality; moving them around to listen on good audio equipment; etc. I'm assuming that given the crappy mono originals, it ...
