Norton Utilities returns unknown disk utility error?

Q: Norton Utilities returns unknown disk utility error?

Hello. I'm hoping someone can help and it's an easy fix. While running Norton Utilities>System Check, I received the following error:
"Unable to operate on drive H (compressed drive) because it is in use by unknown disk utility. Please close unknown disk utility to operate drive H."
I don't know how to find or where to look for this unknown disk utility to close it.

Thanks Yvonne

Does anyone know how long it takes Norton Utilities 2005 Speed Disk to complete a defragmentation of a hard drive. I just installed the software on an old Thinkpad 390 that I am attempting to get up and running. This is the initial defrag of the hard drive and it is running about 10 hours. Can it really take this long?
Thanks

I had a power supply go kaput, then a friend had one kicking around so i tried that ..no go.. leads were too short BUT i did use it for checking... and started getting HDD errors ... So I got a new power supply got that one in, and NOW I get stupid write protect errors to drive c .?? thats a new one to me..... im not liking the idea that the power supply failure took out the HD partition..

Now I am racking my brains here tryin to figure out WHY this system thinks drive c is write protected? Power up, its reading both HDs.. boots up to scandisk (cause it wasnt shut down properly grrrrrrrrr) , then dies at ---write protect error drive c unable to write to drive c---

It has been suggested to me that Norton Utilites may have caused this problem.. and woe is me, I do not have the manual... Anyone have any ideas?????

Any thoughts on which is better on keeping Windows XP running smoothly, Tuneup Utilities vs Norton Utilities? Is one better than the other or do both have specific utilities that are superior? Can both be run on the same machine or is that looking for complications? Thanks.

A:Tuneup Utilities vs Norton Utilities

Norton [Symantec] programs have a bad reputation for causing problems. I would go with "TU," of which I have an old version that has worked fine and caused no complications.

Hi.

I have a dell 8400 running XP Sp 3. For some time now I have not been able to read my thumb drives. When I plug them in it simply returns "Unknown Device" error. I have deleted the usb ports and let XP rediscover them as well as having reloaded the chipset firmware. Still nothing. The thumb drives work fine on other systems and other usb devices (printers keyboard & mouse) work fine. Any ideas out there?

I do not mean the drivers, since in fact I no longer Utilities in question and I do not see where you can download (Satellite S50 B)
Big thank you in advance!

Just finished a reinstall of Windows 10, and I was wondering what the peanut gallery thought of these two programs.

I uninstalled the Norton Security about a month ago while chasing my OS crashing issues. (Norton Security wasn't my problem), but I read good reports, and have relied on Windows defender in the mean time.

Norton Utilities almost always seemed to find registry issues, and I bet if I install Norton Utilities it will find a boat load of issues in the registry, and change things. So I am leery about reinstalling what had been my favorite programs for a lot of years.

Any thoughts?

Interesting, as I've been running Nortons for about the last 8 years now. It has NEVER found a registry error on the 2 computers I'm running it on. I do use CCleaner thou, and let it check for registry errors manually.
I only run Norton Security thou. I do NOT run Norton's Utilities. So maybe you could just run your Norton Security, and not install there Utilities program.

Hello all, I'm a rookie on this board and I'm desperately trying to fix my computer. HOpefully some experts can give me some hope.

My computer freezes quite often, it just happens to freeze randomly even when I was doing nothing on the computer. So I researched on the issue and happend to found a recommendation to run disk defrag and run Check Disk Utility.

Just an hour ago, I ran the "check disk utility" against my C: (where OS is installed). It said It can't be ran since C: is in use but I was able to schedule it to run before computer starts up the next time.

So I did and check disk operated on my next restart. It took quite a while and froze in the middle of the check disk. So I was forced to restart the computer and it re-check the disk again. THis time it deleted a lot of files/security objects? (like a 1000 of these things were deleted) and then re-written again and replaced with other objects. (I'm sorry I didn't take note what these objects are but theere were a lot)

Then it continued the check disk and finished. Now when VISTA started up, I logged in as usual but it turned into a black screen with only the cursor and a dialog box (Error Loading NVCPL.dll. Access Denied)

I can't log back in. But it seems like everything is still there since the HDD partition with VISTA in it still shows my previous size.

How can I repair this!? such that I don't have to reformat my OS...

I need help desperately...thanks in advance..... Read more

Howdy,
I was running Norton Utilities on my win xp machine, but utilities and or the antivirus software drivers where crashing my machine. I uninstalled it and my computer works fine. Then I installed pccillin. However its firewall driver was causing my computer to restart when I logged on to aol 8.0. I just deleted the firewall driver, the firewall does not work anymore, but at least my computer is not crashing. So, my question is really about Windoctor. What the hell is the point of win doctor and is it actually useful? Does win xp have anything of its own similar to windoctor? Are there any other programs that do something similar? I just want my pc to be healthy, but does norton have to be a part of that? THanks for your time.

I am a fan of Norton.

They greatly improved their customer service a few years ago and I trust them.

One of their applications Norton utilities ran every night on WIN 7. it found a number of things to fix.

I asked them why the same problems occurred regularly, they said they were working with MS to fix the problems...!

So imagine my surprise when I ran NORTON UTILITIES on WIN 8 and it came up with 100's of errors.

It goes on to fix them and I don't see any negative effects.

My question is WHY.

PS I did do a fresh update of Norton utilities.

I've purchased Norton Utilities 14.0 like a week ago after i was finished with Advanced System something from Iobit, i just though that it would be better because i already use Norton Internet Security, same customer support, same firm, but i am having trouble with this seemingly useful software, and my problem is that Norton Utilities keeps showing the message "System Health is Low" even after i do "Clean Registry and Repair".

*I have already tried Norton Support website, and did all the steps they said i should do, didn't help, still "system health is low".

*I have even chatted with Norton live support dude, and let him take over my PC and try to repair from inside, - the answer i got from him was "sorry, but i was unable to fix your problem, i will transfer you to the research team, they will contact you within 48 hours - they didn't.

My unprofessional opinion is that something is pretty wrong with my registry (since the issue is not likely to be that of the software - i have installed Norton Utilities on other 2 laptops - works swell).

Hope there is some divine forum member that can help me solve this problem.

Thanks in advance...

Good Morning:
I'm running a networked Pent. 3 600/256 RAM/18 Gig HDD/Windows ME. The HDD has about 12 gig free. Whenever I try to run Norton SpeedDisk (part of the 3.01 SystemWorks software package), it hangs after getting started (I close all applications & turn off the screensaver when doing this). Sometimes while running Norton DiskDoctor, it stops for a very long time while checking the directory structure "hosts", and then continues. I don't know what this is and maybe is the reason SpeedDisk isn't working (it always has in the past; this started about 2 months ago, and I can't think of anything that was changed in that time). Maybe this directory is too large and hangs Norton? I can run Microsoft's defragmenter with no problem...it always completes the task. Could it have something to do with virtual memory being too small (I have it checked so it adjusts it automatically) Any ideas? Thank you all!

I just got rid of my old hdd and got a new ssd to power my C: drive.
I also am a Norton Utility user.
I have disabled the auto defrag. Should I also not use the registry defrag or disk bleach? Is there anything else that I should not do?

And

My Norton analyis of this drives puts it at 15% fragmented because I deleted several programs after restoring an image. The result of those deletions is the 15% fragmentation. Is there a good way to deal with this or should I leave it alone.

Finally
I thought all the issues with SSDs wearing out had been greatly reduced. Mine came with a 3 year warranty.
I read a few articles on this and didn't check the dates. (just checked the dates, they seem to be saying the same things on recent articles).
What Norton Utilities should I not run on my SSD.
Is using something called Trim ok?

I was watching an episode of Breaking Bad on videobb.com and broke my PC bad (pardon the pun). The Chrome window closed and it started popping up error messages. Everything disappeared out of the start menu and folders started disappearing. Most things wouldn't launch on double click but I did manage to establish a vnc connection with my other pc to capture a screenshot. Taskmgr would not open and basically the PC rebooted itself. When it came back up nothing was there.

I used cmd to navigate to program files and change it's attributes from hidden and then ran mbam.exe, it found one trojan.fakealert and removed it, and then I was able to shut it down and bring it back up in safemode. I ran mbam and it found nothing, I ran rkill and it found nothing, I tried to run gmer and it wont run, I tried to run DDS and it wouldn't run. I tried to run ASWMBR and it wouldn't run. Finally, I tried combofix and it got to 'Scanning for infected files...' which it stayed stuck on over night.

While I was at it, I unhid all folders. I am usually pretty good at identifying and removing malware, but since nothing will run but mbam, and mbam finds nothing, I am at a wall. I noticed many of the exe files in taskmanager were showing up as .3XE. I did get HJT to run, and it showed nothing (maybe 10 items) as opposed to the usual 40 or so line items. When I tried safe mode with networking, I could connect to the internet but it redirects me away from anything useful. HOSTS f... Read more

My mother has an old version of Norton. She has the w32. hybris. gen virus and her Norton was only able to quarantine it. Now, she has the newest version of Norton which I read should be able to repair it. Is it safe for her to uninstall her version of Norton so that she may be able to install the new version?

A:Norton Utilities - hybris.gen virus

Hiya

I should think so, as long as it didn't come with the PC. Sometimes, if they do, then they can cause some problems.

However, having that virus will cause some problems. So, I would uninstall it, then install the new one.

If you do have conflicts, you can always restore the system.

For that, reboot to DOS, and at the prompt, type the following. Note the space before the /

scanreg /restore

and pick a date prior to the removal. Don't pick the oldest one.

A:Crash? Uninstall Norton Sec./Utilities

A lot depends on exactly which program you have and, to a certain extent, whether the replacement is another Symantec/Norton product. The later programs (2004 onwards) are very different and may react badly if anything of the older version is left over. CD versions of Norton products used to include a routine to find and uninstall earlier ones, but I don't know if the newer ones can deal with the old ones (if you see what I mean!).

There are tools and instructions about removing Norton products available on the Symantec website; http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606

When I got rid of NAV 2003 and installed NOD32 I only used Add/Remove and didn't have any problems, but every system is different (I'm using '98) and I might have had problems if I'd been trying to install NAV 2005.

A:Norton Utilities Uninstall Problem

You have a lot more problems than a virus, my friend. I'll recommend some tools to start with below, as the whole fix will probably take a few rounds.

================

You have an outdated version of HijackThis. Click here to get the latest version of HijackThis.

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also go here to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

I recently worked on a friends computer it had serious issues with explorer context menues would not work and the computer would lock up any time you tried to click or drag an icon. the computer works fine in safe mode. i ran numerous virus scanners including Avira TDSSKiller Malwarebytes and combofix. none of which detected anything. disabling all shell extensions for explorer using auto-runs had no effect either. hey all,

ok ... my hard drive was acting up, so i decided to move everything to a substitute drive, reinstall windows on my normal hard drive, and move everything back. due to some flaw in Maxtor's software, instead of copying from my full hard drive to my blank, it did the opposite (blank copied to full). it did all of this in less than a minute, leaving me to believe that my 40gbs of information are still there. i tried running norton unerase, and it retrieved an astounding 80,000 files! problem is, all of the files are .txt, and only about a dozen of them are bigger than a mb. can anyone help me figure what the heck is going on? i am beyond confused right now, and i am in desperate need of a functioning computer.

thanks a bunch,

I've had a schlew of problems with a PC starting with a bad installation of Microsoft's Lifecame software leading up to a constantly crashing XP.

I ended up getting a new hard drive thinking that was the problem but at the point of installing XP I get the same problem,

Once XP install starts up and I get to the 'partition screen' I get this as a choice of drives

Unknown Disk
(There is no disk in this drive.)
Unknown Disk
(There is no disk in this drive.)
Unknown Disk
(There is no disk in this drive.)

Upon pressing enter I get a blue screen and can go no further,

"Bad hard drive, controller, etc."

So, it can't be the drive as I got the same 'unknown disk' problem with a brand new drive. The power cable and sata cables are fine. If it is a controller - what exactly is that and how can it be fixed?

Hello guys! I'm having a problem installing windows XP on one of my computers and it's starting to get annoying. I tried to install windows XP from the CD and i got this error when it asks me too chose the partition or something: 4 unknown disk (there is no disk in this drive) messages. If i press the up arrow i get a blue screen, if i press enter i get blue screen!

Weirdest thing is, i installed ubuntu on it and it worked. It was running windows before, just so you know! ;)

The HD i'm installing it to is the samsung sp1614c. I don't have any drivers for it, in case you're wondering, nor my computer has floppy drive :|

Has anyone experienced this problem? Thanks for you help guys! :)

A:Installation error - unknown disk

Does this happen when you try and select a partition to install to? I am assuming yes.

The drive you have appears to be a SATA drive. As setup loads you should see at the bottom a prompt to press a key if you need to load 3rd party SATA or RAID drivers. You will need to follow that prompt to load the drivers for your SATA hard drive. That should work.

Has anyone else received this error using Norton Systemworks 2002 Utility Speed Disk?
Error: "Speed Disk encountered a device I/O error on drive x:. Run CHKDSK /R to fix any bad blocks that may exist on this drive."

I have followed instructions from Symantec's site for how to resolve this issue but had no success. I also am e-mailing tech support for Symantec but that is becoming futile. Anyone else have this and know of something I can try. I have done everything that Symantec says to do.
A side note that might be significant is that in Windows 2000, I cannot run Disk Defragmenter (Windows Defragmenter). Disk Defrag says that it has detected that chkdsk is scheduled to run and run chkdsk /f on restart. I did not schedule it to run so why would it say that it is.

Also I can run speed disk on my FAT32 drive but the NTFS drive I cannot.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate. After allowing Norton Utilities to compact my registry my computer will not boot. It will run through most of the boot process before getting the BSOD.

Using a Windows 7 Repair Disk I tried using System Restore. It will let me choose from 7 different restore points but when it goes to the Confirm disks to restore" the check boxes for the drives are all grayed out and it says "You must enable System Protection on the drive"

I do not have a current System Image to use for recovery.

I have the Windows 7 repair disk, the windows 7 ultimate installation media and WINPE on a flash drive. all of them provide me access to a Command Prompt.

Is there a way to get System Restore working?

Is there a was to do a repair installation of windows so I do not lose the rest of the drive data (1tb)? if I can get to the Norton Utilities program through windows I could restore the proper Registry. Norton Tech Support doesn't have a clue.

Any input on how to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Somehow (and I don't know how), once Microsoft began bombarding me with a screen offering me a free version of Windows 10, the Norton Utilities did something similar. But, IMHO, they are much worse.

Microsoft opens a window once a day and asks if I'd like to take advantage of this free offer (to get a free copy of Windows V10). I am extremely NOT interested. But at least Microsoft has the courtesy to allow me to close this window and escape without much damage.

But, what are the Norton Utilities doing that I find so offensive?

Well, first of all, I find their behavior much, much worse than just "offensive".

Everytime I reboot my PC, they open a window asking if I'd like to try the latest version of the latest version of Norton Utilities. It is impossible to close this window. I've tried everything including Escape, Alt-F4, Alt-Space followed by "C" and many other key combos.

The only way I can escape this window is if I cllick on "Remind Me Later" which ensures that I will be shown this window again the next time I reboot. I suppose one of the reasons I find this behavior so hateful is that I feel as if I am forced to agree to let them show me this window again and again without any end.

I find this to be absolutely maddening because ... every other major Software vendor gives me the ability to escape their stupid "nag" windows. But not Norton. Not unless someone knows some way to close that window that I don&#... Read more

To fix the "no disk error" outside of a sypware/virus infection please try changing the drive letter for your cdrom and see if the problem goes away.

Ok so I'm trying to format my computer because nothing is loading. So when I tried formatting it, It says I have to "Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive, And make sure that no window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again."
So what is a disk utilities? I opened the task manager but I don't want to quit anything until I know what a disk utilities are.

A:What are disk utilities?

if you want to format your pc the best way to do it is to put in the windows disc, boot from the disk the delete the partition and then format the pc

just so you know. Utilities are things like scan disk, defrag and disk clean up

remember if you format your pc you need the windows disk to reinstall windows and the motherboard disk to install the chipset drivers.

What computer do you have?
is it a pre built like a dell or hp or is a custom build?

if its a prebuilt then it will have a recovery partition which will take it back to how it was when you got it.

I am running Windows Pro 7 Service Pack 1 with McAfee Live Safe antivirus and firewall on.

Within the last 7 days or so, a Norton Utilities 16 Installer program was downloaded to my system. I did not intentionally download from Symantec. I don't believe I downloaded as an option from a bundler. I suspect malware masquerading as NU16.

The only program I recall installing/updating last week was Java Runtime Environment SRE 11 directly from the java source site.

I may have updated Adobe Reader DC from the source site, a possible bundler. But currently they are only offering two other programs, plus I never accept the optional offers.

Problem: I cannot remove the Norton Utilities 16 Installer either with Norton Removal Tool or manually without all deletions returning upon reboot.

Symptoms:

Prompted daily to install, which I cancel. There is no option to click for "Do not ask again"
Norton Removal Tool will not run stating that NU has to be removed first.
Norton Utilities does not exist as a full install. Not listed in Programs.
The following was noticed in Task Manager:

I've just acquired a new laptop running XP Professional with a 60 Gig harddrive formatted as a single partition in NTFS. Before there is any data on the drive can I use Disk Management Utilities to turn this single partition into two or three logical drives without affecting the system install? Or do I need to either:

1. Use Ghost to clone the system, then repartition the drive and then put the cloned system back on the new C: partition.

Or, 2. Purchase Partition Magic or similar software to be able to add partitions to previously partitioned drive.

Why is it when I analyze my hard drive with different utilities they come up with different amounts of fragmentation? For example, i have Norton Utilities' Speed Disk and it said one of my drives was 28% fragmented. I've downloaded a couple others for trials and System Mechanic says the same drive is 20% fragmented, and Ashapoo's WinOptimizer says yet another amount. Windows' Defrag built-in utility says 12%! How do I know which is correct?

Does anyone have an opinion of either of these? System Mechanic or WinOptimizer? I already tested WinOptimizer against Norton and it found all the same windows "problems" as Norton with the exception of 3 registry entries that Norton found and WinOptimizer didn't. (WinOptimizer has the ability to scan the registry for bad entries). As far as defrag speed, it was much faster than Norton. I am currently testing System Mechanic.

Basically I am looking for something similar to Norton's Utilities that can defrag as well as scan for windows problems and registry problems and clean up junk temp files. Norton is so slow it is like watching paint dry. But they all give me different readings on fragmentation.

I wondered if anyone had a recommendation for a utility to make an exact hard drive copy? I'm upgrading from old to new drives, and need something to create a mirror of my bootable C drive onto it's new replacement.

The drive came with Seagate's Diskwizard, but this isn't getting the job done. According to Seagate Tech, their program copies file to file, which is where the problem comes in as they believe I've got a tiny corruption somewhere, even though everything works ok.

They suggest I need a sector to sector copier, and suggested Norton Ghost, but I thought I'd ask around too.

Any recommendations? Thanks!

Good day,

I reinstalled XP on my Dell Dimension 4600 using the Operating System disk Dell sent me. Now, I'm trying to install the drivers with the Drivers and Utilities disk Dell sent me; however, nothing happens when I load the CD. Other audio CD's load although I don't have sound so I'm unable to play them, but at least they're detected unlike the Drivers and Utilities disk. In Device Manager, Samsung CD-ROM SC-148C is listed. There are no red marks or other warning signs that indicate something could be wrong. The desktop doesn't have Internet yet. I know I can go to the Dell site and download the drivers but I'm unsure which drivers to download as some of the drivers say recommended and others say optional. Also, I need to know the exact order to install the drivers if I choose to go this route; however, I would really like to use the disk since I paid for it, and I'll install the right drivers for sure if I use the disk. Dell support wants to charge $89 to help me since my warranty expired.

Why was I able to install the operating system using a disk and I'm not able to install the drivers and utilities with a disk? What can I do so the CD will install the drivers?

Note: I first installed a new hard drive because I had a virus, then I reinstalled XP.

Thank you in advance for your help.

A:Reinstalled XP, Drivers & Utilities disk won't load

Can you try it in another computer??? I would venture to say you recieved a bum disk and if that is the case they should replace it for free. if you go to the down load section and use your service tag it should bring up the drivers for your system. If there are optional ones ignore them at first. I always install the chipset drivers first and reboot. Then I install the rest of the drivers in one big batch before rebooting. After that don't forget to do your windows updates which will take a while.

I have a friend that has a machine that refuses to run checkdsk and won't run it on reboot either or after following the instructions on the net. Some of his directories are obviously messed up and his machine tends to lock up when he tries to view certain directories.

Is there any third party surface scan/disk utility that will run under Windows XP?

Thanx
Ryan

Hi

Using a Dell laptop with Windows 7 - laptop has just died by undertaking a registry clean up using norton utilities. It won't reboot or restart and has tried repairing itself but can't.

Anyone any ideas? Unfortunately, it hasn't been backed up for a few months. Worst case scenario - just want to be able to get all the data off the hard drive and buy a new laptop.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

A:Issue with Dell Laptop & Norton Utility

If you have the installation DVD you could try a repair install which should not overwrite your data.

In order to access the drive you could put it into an external enclosure and copy the data to another PC. You could also use a linux live disc or symantec ghost to access the data.

I've been trolling the forums here for a while. Lots of great info but now I actually have an issue where I need some assistance.

When I was booting one day last week I got a nasty BSOD when Windows was trying to load. Then on the next reboot Windows 7 said it couldn't load and needed to do the recovery OS option from the Windows 7 repair on the CD. Well, before trying that I did a cold reboot and it got back into the OS fine so I didn't think much of it. Now, I noticed Ghost shows the C: drive status as "Unavailable" and it can't back it up anymore. It does give me an option to restore from one of my old backups. I'm thinking the MBR got hosed up somehow or something like that. But I'm skeptical to run an MBR repair since I have that 100MB partition on my SSD where my OS resides.

Ghost Shot>

This was about a week ago my Windows 7 started acting up right before the big patch Tuesday. I've been running it for over a year now and it's been solid. When I first set it up I installed it on my SSD (Intel 510 120GB) drive. One of the qualms I had with the install is Windows created a separate boot sector on the disk drive where it stored my boot files. This is known the the "system reserved" operating system files 100MB partition. Apparently the way to avoid this is to use a third party partition tool before doing the windows install. That way it will keep the Boot sector files on the same partition which is how I would of liked it for doing resto... Read more

I have been looking for some good hard disk verification utilities that work in DOS, PC-DOS, DR-DOS.. etc..

I was wondering what you guys use. Scandisk and chkdsk are too slow and I know there are programs out there that work considerably faster and better.

I used to use spinrite, but I'm looking for something that can handle NTFS volumes now. Something that can "fix" disk problems would be nice.

A:What are some good disk drive diagnosis utilities? Bad sectors etc..

I know you are probably tired of hearing this but have you tried something like PowerMax from Maxtor. It can diagnose and correct bad sectors. I've used it to check NTFS volumes without problems. I haven't found anything so far that does a better job, though I'm sure there is something out there. After all, this utility is free and I'm sure there is probably something out there better that probably has a nice large price tag attached.

I'm not sure if this forum supports Windows installed on a MacBook,
but I'd appreciate any help provided.

Regarding my laptop, it's a MacBook Pro bought around 2011,
witn Windows 7 x64 installed from my friend's disc.
(Sorry I cannot remember exactly what it was)
"Barely alive" condition.
Works fine, but suddenly shuts down at times, alert shows battery not inserted (UNDETACHABLE on this MacBook model), won't run without power adapter connected, immediately shuts down when inserting USB cable into 1 of the 2 USB ports, won't detect internet connection, and so on and so on......

That aside, it worked fine until last week.

I was running Windows Update when I accidentally insert USB cable into the wrong port and "forced shut down" the laptop.

When rebooted, I get a flash of BSOD and auto-restart, which leads to startup repair.

From there, I ran startup repair a few times, each time I get the successful result yet Windows still won't start.

Then I switched to Mac OS to use it for some urgent stuff.
While in Mac OS I did went around and did "repair disk" and stuff to the bootcamp.

Next I tried searching for solutions through my phone and did this and that on command prompt.
chkdsk bootrec etc etc tried all posted solutions to something similar to my case.

The next thing I realized was that I now cannot even choose "Windows" on boot and I got stuck.

Then I asked my neighbor and fortunately could borrow Window... Read more

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 on a 500 Gig hard drive with 3 partitions. The problem is I marked one of the partitions, not Drive C, as "active" by mistake.I done a Command Prompt to make it "inactive", but when I started the system up again it wouldn't boot.I used the Vista disk for the recovery process, but I got a message "Operating system unknown on (unknown) local disk" i tried fixing the problem with a command prompt "bootrec/fix boot" ,but nothing happened. When I look at the info in Command Prompt it doesn't show the disk partitions, just Disk 0.Also I can't repair because no Disks are listed to be repaired. If I look at the drive in "My Computer" it is full with a file system marked as "Raw" and it wants me to format the drive.I used "Recover My Files" software and it shows some of the documents that are on the drive, but doesn't show any recovery.I looked at some internet post about the message I got and partition and boot problems like I have, but at this point I don't to try any else to make it worse.I would do a reinstall ,but on one of the drives I have some stuff that wasn't backed up.I never thought about backing it up because it wasn't on the C drive.Any help to solve this problem would be appreciated. ..........Kumpie

Recently I was looking for a way to save an image of my hard drive so that I could restore it ANY time to ANY computer. After setting up so many personal settings and various wallpapers, desktops and all the documents saved on particular subjects, it is a real downer when your system crashes and you have to start reloading from 'scratch'.
Well, the information that I got from the following website, including the free software, has taken care of all my worries. Not only can you save an exact disk image to a hard disk partition, or to a different hard disk drive, but you can save to a USB flash memory stick (which I do all the time). There are also ways to make the USB device bootable.
Check out the following site ---> there are many treasures there. smile.gif

Can someone tell me how to fix this - the computer is in another state in Arizona, and we're in Colorado.

We have remote access to the netbook, and we would prefer to do it remotely, if possible.

Netbook runs on Windows 7 Ultimate. We used Daz's Windows Loader (and I did attempt to clean it up and try to reinstall, but failed due to problems as mentioned)

Thanks!

After the lastest Windows Update I get error code 6BB for kb2553347 (Update for Microsoft Office 2010 64-bit)

After the first time it gave me the error I tried sfc scannow and it found corrupt files (utc.app.json).
I found a solution for this - SFCFix (http://www.sysnative.com/niemiro/apps/SFCFix.exe)

Another run of scannow - no corrupted files.

But the update kept refusing to install.

I got Windows Update Readiness Tool. Ran it. Something got installed.
But that didn't help for 6BB error.

My CBS folder is 80Mb so I uploaded it to zippyshare. -> CBS.zip

A:Update kb2553347 returns error 6BB

There is no point in fixing those errors you found - they are not errors in the file system, but in detection, thanks to an MS screwup.
They promise that they'll get around to fixing them (but don't hold your breath!)
You can either ignore them, or uninstall KB3068708 and hide it when it reappears in the update list.
There are no significant errors in either CBS.log, CheckSUR.log, or the latest CBSPersist file.

Is Service Pack 2 for Office 2010 installed? - it's a pre-requisite for this update.

Try installing the patch from the download here...

A:startup disk utility

This should help.

How to Create a Windows Startup Disk for Windows 2000. If your computer is not running, or you cannot access Windows, you can create a Startup disk on another computer running Windows 2000.

(Use this Option if you have the Windows 2000 CD)

Insert your Windows CD into the CD-ROM drive of a working Windows computer.

When the Windows 2000 Professional screen appears, click 'Browse This CD'.

Open the 'Bootdisk' folder.

Double click the 'Makeboot' icon.

At the Command Prompt, C:>\, type the letter of your floppy drive.

Insert your disk.

Let Windows copy files to your boot disks. You will need 4 disks total.

Close everything when Windows is finished copying the files.

(Use this Option if you do not have the Windows 2000 CD)

Click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Backup.

Click OK if this is the first time using Backup.

Click 'Emergency Repair Disk'.

Make sure the 'Backup the Registry' is Checked.

Insert a Floppy disk.

Click OK to start.

Close Backup when completed and remove the Floppy disk.
