I was trying to reinstall windows 98 and got this message. "Setup does not have enough conventional memory to check your computer's hard disk. You need to free some conventional memory before continuing". I ran scandisk in dos but still get this message when trying to reinstall win98. So how do I free some of this memory?

A:conventional memory
Not Enough Memory Messages
If you encounter an Out of Memory message, you can increase conventional memory by commenting out TSRs and loading device
drivers into the upper memory area.
For information on how to perform these steps, see Microsoft Knowledge Base Article Q134399, "How to Increase Conventional
Memory for MS-DOS-Based Programs" at

I cannot boot into my Windows OS, it takes me to an error screen (error code: 0xc000000f) where it states the winload.efi file is missing or contains errors.

So I tried to boot into my Windows 7 installer on USB stick, but I get "Get upper memory..." on a black screen. From there I can't do anything (not even restart by hitting CTRL + ALT + DEL). Please help, no one has been able to figure it out and I can't find anything online.

Note: I do have a OSX running on another partition of the same drive the Win 7 is located. Not sure if this contributes to anything.

A:Get upper memory error, cannot boot! Help!

0xc000000f hmmm...

Was your OS pre-installed onto your computer? How long has this error been going on?

It'd be helpful to run a DSKCHK /r, but if you can't boot up the computer properly, I see how that'd be problematic.

You might have to use a repair or recovery disc (you can create a repair disc using another computer with Windows and following link, but this is for Windows 7: Create a Windows 7 System Repair Disc ? MAXIMUMpcguides ? Windows 7 tips, tricks, help, and how-to guides or contact your computer manufacturer for help with that).

I installed 64g of memory and once I did my computer hasn't booted up since. I saw where one place said that I could install 64g but then now I see that 32g was the max. Could this have fried the MB or CPU? I have tried removing all the video cards and still nothing. It starts to boot then stops. I have tried each hard drive unplugging and the CD-ROM as well. One thing that I noticed. When I remove the memory to test it ( I put the original  memory back in) it will beep to let me know that there isn't any memory. But that is it. It will go no further. Any thoughts?

I would like to consult with some keen audiofiles out there who are more abreast with sound technology than I am .
Being an ex musician I listen to a lot of music and more importantly have a lot of cd's that lie around the house and that are constantly in the way ! As space is a problem where I live I was thinking if only there was a way to use a laptop pc without compromising sound quality ( very important ) to store all my music on and use it instead of the bulky cd player to play it out into my existing system . It would also be advantageous in the fact that you would have your entire collection at your fingertips !
The ideal would be a soundcard that is at least equal to or better in reproducing audio cd's in the CDDA format than a conventional cd player , and being able to plug an analogue Left Ch and Right Ch out from it into my power amp.
Are there any solutions on the market that would work in this context ?

Thanks to all

A:Laptop PC as substitute for conventional cd player

So... are you looking for a laptop with a good onboard sound? Most newer laptops have pretty decent audio quality. Just get a nice pair of speakers and then rip your CD's to the hard drive using Nero software or something similar. For playback, I would recommend using WinAMP so that you can play various audio formats, add track info, and compile playlists within your collection. There are other audio players, but WinAMP is one of the best imo.

Hi all.

I've searched the forum but I can't find any solution to this problem.

Now with previous versions of Windows in the folder options you could see file types tab which shows all file extensions that are registered and which app opens each extension. On Vista this part isn't available/visible. The main reason being is I want to change the default icon to something else.

Does anyone know how I can view this option in Vista 32bit?

I am running IE9 on a Dell XPS M1330 laptop
I have tried all conventional methods of repairing my machine
IE9 tries to start but bleeps out after a few seconds.
run> iexplore shows nothing found
No restore points so I can't do a system restore

I tried to download an FTP software off the net and it had several "attachments"
I think I have them all wiped out now
all addons have been disabled
I ran Norton's also and the registries are clear
When I try to reinstall IE9 it says I need an update and tries to open the update page in IE
IE dies and since I'm having to use firefox to get here, I can't tell what update I need
I have downloaded every update on the Microsoft site for vista and nothing works.

Problem started when I noticed all the icons on the desktop were inoperable
You have to right click and go to >open
Iexplore seems to have been uninstalled when I uninstalled the attachments and it won;t reinstall. No base software can be found when in run> mode

This is very frustrating, Please advise

I have troubles with system stability, crashes and glitches in software.

This computer is for my work (visualisation/rendering).

-Most full system crashes occur when listening music and high demand software (rendering pre computation, rendering, saving files ~400mb).
-I frequently use ~10gb ram for rendering (of 16gb)
-Occasionally before crashing the system will be stuck in a state, music will continue playing for short while, can still navigate between applications but cannot open anything new.
-Crysis will occasionally crash when I played it.

Glitches include;
-Rendering crash (something like error in the pre computation files).
-Recently experienced windows explorer not refreshing files lists/names.
-music pausing or stuttering during intensive application, after closing the application the music will have large breaks between songs and when seeking. (becoming more frequent recently)

I've tried following with no success:

1) Auto repair in Theme menu: Found no errors, everything is fine

2) Microsoft FixIt, no errors as well

3) Driver rollback, no luck. Clean install of new drivers same thing.

4) Registry hack to force Aero, nothing

5) Desktop Window Manager Session Manager service is on

6) Manually replaced the files in Windows folder that have anything to do with Aero and Themes from my other Windows partition that works just fine. Again nothing.

I built my computer about six months ago and have been having sporadic BSOD problems since day one. I have tried everything I know to do and gotten nowhere. I'm running 7 Professional x64 retail, and this is the first install of it. My computer seems to give me a BSOD within a few minutes of booting up, sometimes it is memory management, other times it is page fault in non paged area. I have ran whocrashed and it has almost always pointed to nfts.sys or ntoskrnl.exe. I've ran memtest 86+ 4.10 for 4 passes and found nothing wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Your bluetooth is disabled. Is this deliberate? If so, why?

Please uninstall the Killer Network Manager - a known cause of BSOD's on MSI systems.
More here:

At times the Killer Network Manager may cause BSOD problems:

NOTE:Link thanks to blueelvis (15Oct2014): This is a method for removing all the network software and only installing the driver. Perfect for those issues that can't be resolved any other way!

NOTE: See this link first: BSOD while playing on msi gt70 dragon edition 2 (thanks to kaelaan) It appears that the Killer Service problem was solved with the latest release of the Qualcomm versions of the drivers (so try updating to a version dated from later in 2014).

The Qualcomm Atheros Killer Service/KillerNetManager is known to cause BSOD's. Please follow the workaround instructions here:

First, open the Run dialog (Win + R keys) and type in "services.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Scroll down and locate the "Qualcomm Atheros Killer Service" and right click on it. Select "Stop"

In the dropdown box for "Startup type", select "Disabled", then click on the "OK" button at the bottom of the window

I built my PC in 2010. Ever since I have been having intermittent BSOD problems. I've found that if I put the computer to sleep instead of shutting down, when it boots stable, it will remain stable. Otherwise I have BSOD crashes 5-20 minutes after booting. I've run memtest86+ after crashes and had it report errors, but if I remove the RAM, re-insert it, and run memtest, no errors will be reported. It also typically remains stable if I boot after inserting the RAM. Anyway, this is getting to be a pain and I'm trying to work something out. I posted before, and the last piece of advice I received was as follows:

"That is not unusual, electronics are just that way, when memtest86+ shows errors it means there is a problem. Even if it doesn't show any errors the run before and the run after.
An error with 2X4GB installed and then no errors with 1X2GB installed, usually indicates a timing and/or voltage adjustment is needed.

It is still possible that the RAM is faulty, let's try some adjustments and see if it will run stable.

CPUZ is showing your CR at 1T, go to BIOS and select 2T again, save and exit BIOS.
Then check CPUZ Memory tab and see if it says CR 2T.

Go to DRAM timings and change 'cycle time (tRAS)' to 25, this will be the 4th item in BIOS -DDR3 Timings Items.
When changed it should read, for the first 4 timings:

Bump your CPU NB voltage to 1.240v or as close as you can get it to that number.
Save and exit BIOS.

Then run memte... Read more

My Dell PC started getting regular BSODs a couple of weeks ago and is now crashing several times a day. I can't detect any correlation with what is going on at the time - sometimes it falls over straight away, sometimes it will run fine for hours.

I have run MemTest repeatedly but it has not shown up any problems.

Amongst the errors I have seen are Memory Management, and Error Paging a Non-Pageable Area.
I have attached the dump files extracted using the tool - if anyone can tell me what is suddenly causing this to happen I would be very grateful!

A:Repeated BSOD - Memory Management, Attempt to Page a Non-Pageable area

Hi Geoff2000,

I have analyzed the blue screen dumps and it appears the root cause is ntoskrnl.exe file. It is a operating system core file and the error might point towards a corruption in the file. I also found that the blue screen error code was 0x0000003b. It is usually a graphic's driver (display adapter/video driver), other possibilities include but are not limited to antivirus/antispyware/security programs and even memory (mapping).

BCCode: 3b 0x0000003b

This error has been linked to excessive paged pool usage and may occur due to user-mode graphics drivers crossing over and passing bad data to the kernel code.

I would suggest you to run inbuilt Dell diagnostics to check the system for any hardware faults :
Power on the system
Press F12 when you see Dell logo
Highlight Diagnostics and press Enter
Note down error messages, if any, and share the findings

If hardware diagnostics pass, the issue might be related to OS or software/drivers. You may try to update the chipset drivers from Here and graphics driver from Here and see if it helps.

You may also try updating the video drivers directly from manufacturer (nVidia) Here.

If the issue persists, you may check and clean the system from any dust on fans, memory, video card, motherboard etc. You may also try reseating memory and video card. If it doesn't help, try using the system without video card to isolate whether video card is point of failure or not. You may refer to step by step instruction... Read more

I have been getting random blue screens for about a month now so I decided I would finally make a forum post about it. A lot of my games on steam always has files missing after completely downloading the games. It seems like a lot of my errors when installing programs are missing files. So I decided it probably is the hard drive messing up so I went and bought a new hard drive but that did not fix the problem. I still have the same problem. I have no idea if it is a hardware issue or a software issue that is causing me to blue screen. I have done windows memory test and hard drive error checking. If you could help me I would greatly appreciate it.

"Macro Creation Request for Moving Data from Rows to Columns in a Non-Conventional Way"

Hello, all! Hopefully somebody can help me with the following problem (please see the attached document).

Presently, I have an Excel 2010 document containing variables 1-6 per country in rows for label 1 through label x. However, I need the table to contain the country level information as columns for each label so that there is only one row per label. For example, instead of row 1 containing label 1 argentina variables 1-6 then row 2 containing label 1 arab emirates variables 1-6, I need the table to contain row 1 label 1 columns argentina variable 1, argentina variable 2, etc...then arab emirates variables 1, arab emirates variable 2, etc.

Also, the countries in the table that do not have information for a given label fall at the end of the list for each label instead of in alphabetical order, but they need to be placed in alphabetical order when "columnized." I have provided the arab emirates as an example. Alphabetically, it comes before Argentina, but in the list it comes after because it did not contain information for those given labels. Since information per country will vary from label to label, the countries must remain in alphabetical order in the columns regardless of whether information is provided or not per label.

Is there a macro that may be written for this?

Thank you so much, in advance, for taking the time to read my post! Happy day!

I know that this is a very common problem, and I have tried solving it many conventional ways, but nothing seems to be working. I currently have malwarebytes, sbybot S&D, and Superantispyware on my computer, and none have done the trick.

Will someone please walk me through a removal process? thank you!

I have received a 2 page pdf that I am copying and pasting data from.

On most of the pdf the select tool works as expected. drag tool over desired text, ctrl + C to copy then open word and Ctrl V to paste. However there is a section where selecting a line of text actually highlights the blank line above or below depending on the what side of the horizontal middle line of the text you are. Doing the rest of the operation Copy and then paste results in the selected text being pasted even though the area that was highlighted was a blank area.

I am using Adobe Reader 8.1.2 and would appreciate any suggestions. Is there perhaps certain attributes on the pdf which are corrupted or prevent copying? if this was possible how could I check for it?

I'm creating a macro that will move information from one excel spreadsheet to another, sounds easy enough, however I want the user to be able to highlight the area they want to move, then click the macro button and the macro will use the highlighted area to extract the data to move. The cells that I want to move will be constantly changing so the range cannot be fixed... is this possible?

This is the macro so far:

Workbooks.Open Filename:= _
"C:\Documents and Settings\M052AHE\My Documents\CDBSales Software Version\CDBSales Archive.xls"
Sheets("Sales Archive").Select
Selection.Insert Shift:=xlToRight

As you can see, I want the range to be whereever the user has highlighted if this is possible

A:Solved: User selects area and Macro uses the selected area

Remove the first line of code (i.e. Range("L2115").Select) , and that's it.

There is a more sophisticated way, of course. Interested?

Hi Guys,

We have a single user here that has problems with stuck outbox messages in outlook. Off of only one of his email accounts in his profile. Off of only his computer. There are definitely some patterns of characteristics from the emails though, which I would imagine have something to do with the problem. They are: They almost always include attachments, they've always got multiple recipients and CC's, and they're almost always replies in threads of emails being sent back and forth.

Clearing out and recreating his profile doesn't help, doing the standard "take off some of the 'RE:'s in the subject line", throw it in drafts and then re-send it, copy-and-paste it into a new message altogether... some of these randomly help solve problems at total random, but 99% of the time they don't work.

My only workaround that works completely is using a virtual box (or logging in through another PC), setting up his profile and forwarding the stuck message from the outbox on the alternate computer.

Now obviously that means it's not our email host, and it's not some strange format or character that's universally just not able to send... what happens with these messages is that they aren't even looked at, they don't even begin to send (sometimes attachments would explain a delay as it would take time to send out a big file), they're just ignored permanently on his computer.

I obviously see a solution would be to switch out his desktop, but that's kind of like saying "... Read more

I have a bit of experience with Outlook and Exchange, so I have a few questions for you--
Are you running in a Microsoft Exchange environment, and if so, which version?
What antivirus are you running on the affected PC?
Do you have any special spam filtering or virus scanning on the mail server that is specifically for email?

I've seen where certain antivirus products can cause these "stuck" outbox issues. I assume you've tried the basic F9 (send/receive) to try and force the message through as well?

A:Upper & Lower filters - Need to replace

Only thing I can think of, would be to reinstall the programs that added them in the first place. (The filters are cd/dvd drivers/driver add-ons that are installed by third party software). In this case, they probably came from iTunes.

Otherwise a system restore would restore the registry to the state before you deleted them. Start > All programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

Could somebody tell me how to disable those messages that slide out from the upper right corner of the screen please.

I've tried disabling notifications for 3 hours but it doesn't disable the notification that pops out every time that I go to print a document.

It's basically warning me every time that I print a page on my printer that the ink is low. I know it's low, I will probably be able to still print a hundred or more pages before the cartridges actually have to be replaced.

The main problem is that the way that I have to do real life work, I need to print one page documents one after another, so in an afternoon I may end up printing 150 separate pages, so that means I get that message sliding out 150 times and the warning sound playing 150 times, about once every 20 seconds or so as I submit each page for printing.

Anyway, probably more than you wanted to know, so if somebody could tell me how to turn off the notifications that appear in the upper right corner of my screen I'd sure appreciate it.

Hello everyone.

I have always thought the windows upper stripes are a bit useless because it's a waste of screen space just for the maximize, minimize and close buttons and program names. This issue is even more annoying (at least for me) nowadays with the current 16:9? screen proportion, which is, on the other hand, very good for other purposes.

Add to it the fact that menus bars are located right beneath it and the result is a very horizontal proportion of screen effective area. This becomes not very advisable running some programs in which a more vertical one would suit better.

It's possible to set menu bars vertically at the sides of a window in some programs, as Autocad, and actually it's so easy as to click on them and drag them towards the side you want to.

I don't remember seeing them vertically at the right or left of a Window's window. I'm browsing the internet looking for something to do it but I have found nothing thus far, neither in Windows help.

Well, I know F11 and the a sliding task bar partially solves this issue but I think that not in case you have two windows at the same time.

Is there a way to set either the window upper stripe and menu bars at the side of a window?

Thanks in advance.

A:Is it possible to set sidewards windows upper stripes?

If the white stripes you are referring to is the title bar (with the menus underneath( there is no way in Windows to change this.

Sure some programs allow you to drag things around, but not Windows 7.

The only program in Windows 7 that I can think of that you can move toolbars around is Internet Explorer if you choose unlock the toolbars, but it does not allow vertical alignment.

This may sound confusing but let me try to explain what happened. I have 2 computers and an A/B switch. The personal computer (Windows Vista) is never on the internet. I was using the personal computer with a wireless mouse and keyboard. I wanted to backspace and the keyboard wouldn't work. I switched to my internet computer (Windows 7) and the keyboard wouldn't work there either. However, the mouse did work on both computers.I thought maybe the batteries were dead in the keyboard and replaced them. No effect. The lights on the wireless base were flashing and it wouldn't synch. I replaced the mouse and keyboard with a wired set with no effect. I think I then rebooted the machine and the mouse got stuck in the upper right hand corner. The cursor would move erratically when I tried to move the mouse but would always end up in the corner. I can't get the mouse to move so I can get to the computer settings or anything. I went back to the wireless as it is now synched but the cursor is in the same pattern. I rebooted the computer in safe mode with no improvement. This just happened in the middle of using my slide-to-digital copier which I've been using for hundreds of slides with no problems like this. Now both computers are messed up by either keyboard and mouse. Whatever happened affects both the internet and non-internet machines alike. Help!!

Update: When I connected the mouse and keyboard directly into the computer they worked OK. So I guess there must be something wrong with the A/B switch?

I have already set how my mouse works by preventing windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen but I now have a new aggravation : the windows maximize when I touch their upper frame - and I do that to move them on the screen, not to MAXIMIZE them !!!

truth is, I have the feeling my mouse has been behaving strangely for a week or so - it's a regular cordless logitech, it suddenly also seems to open files at a single click (it's not set to do that) instead of just selecting them, besides resizing windows when I don't want to...

has some window update mixed things up for me ?

any suggestions as to what I can do will be very welcome !

Ok so there's a really old thread about this already. But it didn't solve my problem. When I boot vista, a little white square appears in the upper left corner. It's not my wallpaper. On the old thread they have resolved the problem as being an ATI GPU Driver problem, and the update fixed it. But here's my problem, I don't have an ATI GPU.

When I right click the little white sqaure I can open up its properties, and in the properties it has a name of some website. Shortly after I even read it a "close program" window comes up. I click on close and the sqaure dissapears until the next time I boot.

Leaving the white square on just messes with whatever programs Im running. For example: If im watching a movie in full-screen, it will randomly just exit out of full screen. It doesnt do that once the white sqaure is off.

Well thanx for hearing out my problem, any help would be great.

Ever since I've linked my MS and Skype account, my email is now always "seen" as [email protected] LIVE.COM.
Even my Windows Phone when I sign in with MS account, it gets recognized as @LIVE.COM at the end.

It's slightly annoying, I've checked all my settings on the web/computer/phone.. Nothing does the trick. I do sign in with lowercase email, but it somehow gets changed to uppercase LIVE.COM on it's own.

Anyone else experienced something like this?

This is a screenshot of switching local account to MS. Note that name before LIVE.COM is in lowercase, and I did sign in with all lower case email.

imgur: the simple image sharer

I've also asked on Microsoft answers webpage, but they have no idea what I'm talking about

I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro x64, and Nokia Lumia 930 (Cyan).

Any kind of tip is greatly appreciated.

Edit: add a space after @ in email to break the link.

> My new protege has heating issue. upper left corner(power button area) is heating up pretty bad and doesn't cool down easy. Is this common for everyone, or is there anyway that i can reduce the heat?

I guess this is your first ?small? notebook which supports such big CPU/GPU performance. You will notice this on all small (~13?) notebooks. Why? Because the cooling modules are placed on the left and the whole warm air flows from this direction.
I?ve got U400 series. It?s 13? unit and the left area is warm too because of the cooling modules.

Furthermore the unit supports an overheating protection which means that the notebook would shut down automatically if the temperature is too high.
Does the notebook shut down automatically? No?
Well, in such case the temperature is ok and not too high.

Of course you can change the Win 7 power management settings in order to decrease the CPU and GPU performance which would lead to lower heat dissipation. This keep the temperature at lower level.

What I first thought would be a simple keyboard problem apparently isn't. When I type the upper case D using the right shift button, I only can get a lower case "d". When using the left shift button, I get nothing but a cursor flash and no letter at all. If I hit the D key again (2nd time) holding down the left shift button, I do finally get the upper case D and as many as I want thereafter.

What I have done so far: Thinking this was a bad keyboard, I purchased a brand new keyboard.......same problem. I then borrowed the keyboard off my wife's computer which is working well.........same problem on my computer. So not likely a keyboard problem. I then uninstalled the keyboard driver and re-installed it THREE TIMES........still same problem. This is an HP Media Center computer with XP Pro so I downloaded the very latest keyboard driver for this keyboard and installed.........still same problem. Of course I rebooted after each install.

I then went to the PC Doctor diagnostic tools and did the keyboard test which puts a keyboard on the screen and as you press each key, it blanks out the key pressed on the screen. All keys work find except for when I go to upper case with either shift button and type the letter D. Instead of just the D going blank on the screen, the C key and the CTRL key go blank also at the very same time. So for some reason my D key is being translated somewhere into a D, C with the CTRL button signal. How can that be?

After having months of problems, my girlfriend finally got a replacement PC sent to her, but I've only gone and messed it up and now I'm in big trouble!

Upon arrival, the disk drive was not being recognized and wouldn't even open. I researched this and found it was a common problem, so attemted all the online fixes without success. Then, in another attempt, I STUPIDLY deleted the wrong upper and lower filters and now windows won't start at all.

Being a brand new computer there is no restore point to work from and, like I said, the disk drive won't even open to boot from disk!

So, is there any way I can fix the damage? All I can think of is borrowing and external disk drive and a copy of the CD, but I was hoping there might be a simpler way I can do this before the girlfriend comes home and kills me!

A:Deleted wrong upper and lower filters :-/

Where did you do the deletion?

If the computer hasn't had much added to it you could do a Factory Restore. How you do that depends upon the brand and model name and number, check that companies Web site.

I hope someone can help or explain this problem for me.

I have a DVD I made of my website. The website is constructed with every thing relative to the local system so that it will operate from the DVD.

My XP system has 2 DVD drives. One is a read only (E:) and the other is a R/W drive (F:). The problem is that on the read only drive ALL the directory and file names are in upper case and they are truncated to 8 characters, DOS files? For instance ThisIsanImage.jpg wil be THISISANI.JPG and index.html will be INDEX.HTML.

If I copy the files to my hard drive the result is the same. Of course the html involved will not function with the case of names and directories being changed.

However, if I put the DVD in my R/W drive the directory names and file names are correct and in mixed case with names longer than 8 characters. The website works fro this drive and copies to my hard drive ok. I have never run into this before.

Any one know what's going on. Do I have a setting some where in XP that I don't know about.

Your assistance is most welcome as I want to be able to send this DVD to other people, but I can't be confident that they won't have a problem.

I have recently had an issue with my Vista32 affecting Word in Office 2003. The fonts will only type in uppercase regardless of keyboard caplocks being on or off.

I can however highlight the letters typed and change the case through 'format'; it continues as normal from there on in. Any suggestions?

I don't recall installing a program at the time this started, but it is possible.

A:Upper Case locked in Office 2003

Hi Christine

Are you sure it only happens in Word 2003? Just to check, type a few lines in NotePad and WordPad to test. Let us know if you get all caps in those programs as well.

I'm not sure that System Restore will help for this problem, but if you've a recent Restore point that is just prior to the all-capitals trouble, you could try it.

Best of luck

That's no longer a part of the chrome - the site is shown in the address bar (the dark black portion of the URL, with the rest grayed out). You can also see the website title in the aero peek window if you mouse over the icon in the task bar, but you aren't going to be adding it back to the titlebar, unfortunately.

The computer very likely has a recovery environment built in, so it's just a matter of using the correct Function key during boot to access it and then do a full restore.

I've been using Win 8 for a while and was frustrated that the "filmstrip" view option was gone. I used WinXP since it came out till this past summer. If that tells you how ingrained I was and am. Win 10 is great over Win 8 or 7 but, that filmstrip isn't there. Most people with cameras take landscape type pictures, some portrait. I think the majority take them in landscape. Well, in Win 8 and 10, you "can" get a preview of images with the preview pane option BUT, it's stuck to the right side of the window. Now, 99% of my pictures are landscape so, viewing an image on the right hand side is restricting and does not allow one to view a landscape image fully. It's annoying as all get out. Is there a way to move the images preview pane to the upper position and the thumbnails to the bottom? Just like the filmstrip in Win XP?

My Dell Latitude display is fading in the upper third. It works fine with an external monitor. I attached a picture. Is it fixable?
I googled and saw that I can relatively easily replace the inverter ($ 60) or the fluorescent bulb ($10). however, those would cause the screen to be all black or very dark. So it looks like something else is broken. Any ideas?

Obviously replacing the entire screen (if I can even buy one) might be too expensive and not worth it.

I haven't opened it up yet, wanted to research first what repair options I have.

Edit: when the mouse pointer is in the upper third it is almost invisible and leaves traces.

I have what i hope is a quick/easy question to answer. Whenever i transfer files from a CD-RW disk back to my hard drive, the names convert into upper case. This doesn't happen from the floppy drive or cd-r disks, only cd-rw & only on transfer back to the hard drive, not in transfer to the disk.

I have a HP cd writer (getting fairly old now) with adaptec direct cd software. i'm running windows 98. I DON'T have the "allow all upper case names" option in folder options ticked and it also happened on my old computer and is still happening on my new computer (same cd-writer transfered to the new computer).

Does anyone know how i can stop it happening? i know it's not a huge issue, but i've just bought a new computer (still getting it up & running) & i really don't want a PILE of files all with upper case names if i can avoid it, so really hoping it can be fixed

Well, I messed with the registry when I shouldn't have done, and now my mouse and keyboard aren't working. Lesson learned.

I was trying to fix an external hard drive that had stopped working, and was told to delete the Upper Bounds from the registry in certain places. Unfortunately I seem to have deleted them from the wrong places. My computer will load Windows until the password screen, then I can't use my mouse or keyboard whatsoever.

I have tried Googling various solutions to this problem but haven't yet found a solution that works for my problem specifically.

I've tried Safe Mode (the same thing happens), and trying to boot from my Windows CD installation from the CD drive doesn't make any difference. I have installed the Major Geeks recovery software to a USB hard drive (, have tried to recover Windows by pressing R, and have got to the stage where I have a command prompt. It's asked me for the Admin password, now I've got a C:\WINDOWS> prompt. What do I need to type for it to tell my mouse and keyboard to work?

My computer is getting on a bit (I've had it over four years, albeit with various re-installs of Windows), and I'm only really bothered about recovering the data on there and am happy to re-install Windows then. Is it just easier to visit a local friendly computer shop, recover my data, pay a few quid for the pleasure, then re-install Windows?

I take the CD-ROM that i burned with rollercoaster tycoon and I slip it into my aforementioned laptop. some rollercoaster tycoon thing comes up, I click install and think everything is fine. When i click the .exe file to play the game, it asks me for my E: drive. i check my computer and there is no E: drive. I also cannot eject my disk now because the computer isnt detecting an optical drive, let alone a CD to eject. I also have no cd tray on my laptop, the disc just slides in and im pretty sure theres no manual eject button. I looked.
Any Help? I tried to look a bunch of stuff online. I even did one thing relating to disabling integrity checks via the command window? i dont really know what else to do. restarting and system restores didn't work.

I would appreciate any help. Thank You!

Everyday I upload some files to my website and to simplify my website operations, I use the same filename and just upload a file with new information every day. The case of file extensions is of no consequence to Windows 7, but it matters to my website. I want to standardize on one case and it doesn't matter which as long it's the same all the time. I have one app, the snipping tool, which seems to generally make files using uppercase, but I have some existing files that are lower case. I have tried to get rid of the lower case extensions by deleting the file and then recreating it with the same name. When I do, Windows changes the case from upper to lower. If I simply create a brand new file with no previous instances of that file in existence (as far as I know), then the default case is upper. How does one go about converting all existing files of a particular type to a standard file extension case, be it upper or lower.

A:Change file extension upper/lower case

Not sure you can as Windows is case insensative, but have you tried doing it from a Command prompt, enclosing the filename.ext in double quotes as "filename.ext"?

If that doesn't work, maybe a two step process would.

ren "FileName.EXT" FileName.EX"
ren "FileName.EX" FileName.ext"
