I downloaded a free sample of a screensaver from digiscapes.com just to have a look - and then uninstalled it. Now I constantly get a pop up window telling me I'm running an unregistered Buddy Saver screensaver. My husband reinstalled and uninstalled for me, but I'm still living with this Buddy Saver annoyance. How do I get rid of it ?? (I also sent them an email weeks ago to ask what to do but no response). Thanks
It is probably running at startup. Go to start > run and type in msconfig and enter. Go to the startup tab and uncheck the item for it listed there.1 more replies

I am aware of the Screen Saver setup and modify capabilities in the Personalization menu. I am also aware that there is a Preview button there also.
There is a program in the Windows system files that you can put on the Taskbar at the bottom of the screen. You can then click this Icon and manually start the Screen Saver.
I however (in my infinite stupidity) have forgotten the name of this program and where it is located. Can someone please tell me what its name is and where it is located?

Hi, on one of my PC's running WinXP Pro, all of a sudden the screen saver doesn't work. It works when I preview it, but no matter how long delay I leave it for or how long i leave it for. It fails to start.
Any ideas ?
Is the screensaver a generic xp scr saver or a third party one.
I've had several instances lately, when I got to move my mouse to disengage my screen saver the computer freezes for a good minute and a half before returning to my desktop. Today, I went to preview the screen saver through display properties to see just how often this happens but my comp locked up after clicking preview. I did get this message 3D fly objects is not responding. I clicked end task but it took a while to unlock. Also, shortly after I received the message "Run a dll as an App". I've never seen this before. Not sure if this is connected but, With help from the site I deleted some spy ware last week. Also, sometimes when I shut down my computer the computer freezes on a blue screen and never turns itself off. I eventually just hit the surge protecter switch. Any ideas if this is connected or how to fix?

I have my new laptop set to go to screen saver after 1 minute of inactivity and password protected (you know, to keep people out of it when I walk away). I am noticing that it will start to go into screen saver, and then stop. I went to lunch and came back an hour later and no screen saver. Any thoughts??

Ok i'm hoping this is an easy fix but i cant seem to get it. Every time i lock my computer then walk away i come back and the screen savor isn't on. I've tried setting it lower to see if it comes on and it never dose and also my monitor never shuts off either when locked and idle.
have you tried preview to see if it works that way
I have some photos saved in Picassa that I'd like to put into a screen saver but I don't know where to go in Vista to set one up.
If you just want to set one up using a folder of selected photos, then control panel>personalization>change screen saver>in the small window, use the dropdown menu to select photos, then into settings> browse, and choose desired folder, choose your speed etc. and ok/apply your way back out.
So, I made a 3D animation (using <anim8or, FREE) for my teacher to use as a screensaver. The thing is, i don't know how to do that second part.
The file is an AVI and that is the only filetype I am capable of without a converter (wich I am currently lacking...), so if tat's a problem, darn.
If you're like me, then you're confused about what I just said.
I have an AVI that I want to make into a screensaver. How do I do that?
EDIT: After doing a google search, I found something... but it sucks. Any reccomendation of the "Avi/MPEG to Screensaver" program (.exe file is avimpeg.exe) will result in a dead end on my part. Seing as every search result i checked was for this particular file.

It seems like ever since I got the updates from Microsoft, my screen saver only works half the time. Like today I was gone from the PC for 2 hours and when I got back I turned my monitor on and there was no screen saver. But yesterday it was working fine. I also have password protect thing on, so I know no one was using my computer. Is anyone else having this problem? How do I fix it?
did you disable screen saver before downloading updates?
I use my pictures as a screen saver, but it won't ever turn off, I don't want it to sleep because it takes to long to boot up again, any other suggestions? I have Vista. I didn't have this problem with windows xp. I want into prefrences and just told it when to stop the screen saver.
I don't really understand what it is you want, I have my Pictures folder as the Screen Saver and it is set to activate after 10 mins of the computer being idle all other power savings are set to Never, whenever I want to use the computer again it's just a question of moving the mouse and the monitor is back to what it was either the desktop or if I left a program or forum open it would be back to that.28 more replies
My friend has two drives in his computer.........one is the boot drive with windows 7 as the OS and the other is the one he stores all his photographs on and other data.
How can the screen saver for windows 7 use photographs direct from the storage hard drive? or will he have to copy all his photographs onto his boot drive to facilitate this.
Thanking you in anticipation of your help.
RIGHT click an empty spot on the desktop.Choose Personalize.Choose Screensaver.Click the drop down arrow under Screensaver, select Photo Gallery.A preview will be shown in the box. Since this will be from the default setting, pictures on the C drive, he will need to click Settings/Browse in order to choose the storage drive pictures folder. After he does that, click Save.If he does not want to use all the photos, he can create a folder and copy the photos he does want to use to that folder. He can then navigate to that folder using the method I described.5 more replies

I'm running XP home. On screen saver tab in the display control panel, when "Windows" is selected as the screen saver, if you select the "settings tab", then the "general tab", it states that: "The system agent must be active in order for you to display the screen saver immediately by moving the mouse pointer to a corner on the screen."
I can't figure out where or what the system agent is and a search in windows "help" yields no match for "system agent" Does anyone know how to activate it?

I posted the other day and was told that my post had been moved to a different location, the link was broken so here goes again.
Computer had gotten real slow so after trying a few things (running malwarebytes, ccclean, register??) I decided to dump everything and start over.
Loaded up programs and things were a lot faster but the computer still didn't seem right. At times in typing, the letters would not type or a differnt letter typed.
Also internet explorer won't open so I have to use windows update to get on line, when I click explorer, internet properties comes up even off of Start programs internet explorer.
My computer (after apx. 5 minutes of non use) makes me log in again.
Ran malwarebytes, security essentials, so I'm not sure what is up.
Any help would be appericated
In Windows 10 the screen saver option is bured within the lockscreen settings under "screen saver settings". It still doesn't look like it has been updated since 8.1 or maybe even Windows 7. In this day and age with the quality of displays there is no real reason to use a screen saver anymore like there was in the 1990s.
Iwanted to post a poll but the option at the bottom is just a little text box and I'm not sure if i am missing something here or i just don't have that ability.
So, do you still use a screen saver and why or why not?
I don't. I just set my screen to turn off after a given amount of time and then to have it go to sleep. I really don't see any reason to use it and as for aesthetics it just looks dated and boring.
The last time I used a screensaver was when I used Windows 7 back in 2012. I just let me screen get dark after a while and then have the PC go to sleep.1 more replies

Okay, sounds silly, but after multiple attempts to activate my screen saver on my new HP p6649c running Win7 with an ATI Radeon HD4200 graphics card, I can't activate it.
I've rebooted multiple times. I've reset the screen saver settings multiple times, clicked on "apply" and "OK" and no dice. I've set the options to my own pictures as well as the default screen saver images. I have also checked the power management settings but they appear normal. Nothing seems to affect it so the monitor just sits with my desktop on perpetually.
Are there some settings on the monitor itself I should modify?

Hello & welcome to TSF ,
do you have a Windows Xp cd, not the restore cd's that come with some systems, the cd will have the Windows logo & 3D hollowgram/image on it
if you do not maybe you can barrow one from a friend/family member/co-worker as long as it is the same version that is on your system
if you have (Windows XP Home Ed. sp2 ) then the cd will have to be that / if you have a cd with (Windows XP Home Ed. )you will have to slipstream (SP2 ) onto a disk that you create
this also applies to (Windows XP Professsional )
this also applies to (sp3 )
now if you do have the Windows XP cd with sp2 please follow these steps as long as sp3 is not installed
performing a (sfc) system file checker
It is a scan that checks the core files & dlls of the (os) operating system and replaces them if they are corrupt or missing with the correct original version

I reformatted my wife's computer last week and installed Windows 7 Ultimate. The computer uses a Gigabyte motherboard and I used the driver disc that came with the Gigabyte motherboard. The Display Adapter is a ATI Radeon HD4250 with the ATI Catalyst Control Center. The resolution is 1280 X 1024. When I try to set the Screen Saver, the apply button is greyed out. Go to amd.com to get your video drivers, download and install them, restart the pc and see if the screensaver will run.
Never use video drivers off the cd, always go to the manufacturer`s website. In this case amd.com

Is anyother application giving you problems?
Ok here is the problem. I am in college and someone has came into my room and messed with my computer. The screen saver pops up every 10 seconds. I figured they had just messed with the timing of it so i went to adjust the timing but the screen saver options were no longer there. I have no idea how to fix this problem without the options tab. Is there a way to do it through dos or what? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

O.K. try this. Go to control panel, display. Click on screensaver tab. See what the time is set for. You can change the amout of time before the screen saver will click on. Do not forget to click on the apply button or it will go back to the original setting.

Gateway 675XL 1mb ram. About 2 weeks ago, my screen saver quit working. Can't find any programs interfering with it, nor did I change anything. Now it will not come up at the allotted time. Any suggestions!
You may need to go to Control Panel and then Power Options and increase (or set to never) the settings to turn off monitor.
U might need to Run System Restore, which enables the system to go back to a date before U had a problem. Everyone forgets about the most popular fix. Is simply running System Restore, which seems to undo just about anything for most folks.

Screen savers were developed to protect older CRT monitors from "burn in." They are unnecessary for modern monitors. Even for the older CRTs, a blank screen was fine, except that they did not have the power saving options we now have.
So, yes, using the power settings for the monitor to save power is best.

How do you simply add a screen saver in 2K. There is no add on the sreensaver tab in the display utliity. The file I want to add has a .scr extension.
Copy it to the winnt\system32 folder. As long as it does not need any additional dll files, it should run. Select the screensaver in the normal manner.

How can I find my screen saver, I want to install a new installation of xp on my computer. But, I want to save the screen saver.
Files for your screen saver could be all over the place there is a place that part of the screen saver is or might be located but the best way to get your screen saver if you do not have the original file is the manufacturer's site that made the screen saver.
The one way you can start to find it would be to do a search for scr this is the extension for the screen saver but when you find it do a right click on it then properties and look for the web site address for the file.
I wish you good luck.
I recently bought a new computer with a 512 MB graphic card. My old computer had a 128 MB card but at the beginning, I only had 8 MB. I was using a screen saver with fish in an aquarium. With only my 8 MB card, the animation was really impressive. I tried my screen saver yesterday with my new 512 MB card and the picture was terrible. There were plenty of horizontal lines on the screen. What could explain this? Could it be that the program wasn't intented for this type of card? In those days, big cards like mine didn't exist. There might be a new update to this screen saver.

Normally when my computer is idle for about 10 minutes the screen saver will come on and then shortly after the screen saver with stop and and the screen will go dark, like it should, and the computer will go to sleep. But since last night that has not been happening. the screen saver does not come on and after maybe 20 minutes or so, the screen goes dark and the computer goes to sleep.
Try a system restore to before the problem started. If that doesn't help, you might try this fix from kellys-korner. Scroll down to line 51, ScreenSaver Disable/Enable. Instructions to run VBS Files at top of web page.
I'm trying to put my personal photo's on my laptop as a slideshow. I've copied them in to "My Pictures" but when I go in to Control Panel>Display>Screen saver>My Picture Show says "no pictures found in C:/Documents & Settings/All Users/Documents/My Pictures/Etc/Etc." How can I get my pictures in to this path? I can't find the same path in my C: drive. I can only follow it to "other users" then instead of "Documents" it has "shared documents, shared pictures, etc." Thanks - Chuck
You should be able to put them in any folder. On the Screensaver tab select My Pictures Slideshow, then click the settings button and browse to the folder you put them in.

The screen saver is not working,
when we go to the screen saver setting - there is a message - "The screen saver can't run because it requires a newer video card or which require Direct 3D"
But it was working a day ago.
Here are some items to check:
What graphics card do you have?Do you have a wireless mouse or keyboard? If so make sure it has they have the latest drivers installed.Have the latest graphics driver installed for it.Refresh or update your WEI score.
Is it just that screen saver, or is it all screensavers including the default one from Vista?
Hope this helps for now,
Hi there. I had at one time tested the XP picture slideshow screen saver in Windows 7 (32 bit edition). I bought a new computer, which runs Windows 7 64 bit. Where do I copy the .scr file to make it work? Will the XP picture slide show run with not problem?
I do not like Windows 7 picture slide show. It is not flexible enough; doesn't allow any settings.
Sorry we're getting to this so late. I hope you've found a solution by now, but if not -- what specific settings did you want to modify in the Picture Slideshow? There might be a workaround.
Also, what level of success did you have running an XP Picture Slideshow in Windows 7 32-bit?

I'm running xp and noticed my screen saver doesn't always go on. I wiped the hard drive clean and reloaded xp (because of partitioning problems, not enough room) and it's still doing the same thing. I seem to remember it doing it with ME also. What is going on ?
I am so confused.
Is this one of the default screen savers that comes with XP or a third party screen saver that you have loaded?
Also, is the screen just going blank? Both XP and ME blank the screen after 20 minutes by default.
I just recently reloaded Windows 7 64 bit. The screen saver was working. After downloading all the updates it won't work. Is there someway to get it working again?
The problem was the wireless mouse. I tried a different mouse with a mini receiver and now it is fine.1 more replies

What happens is that everytime i re-start the machine, the screen saver get itself re-set to the default which is "Windows XP". The same thing happens to the monitor power. I have made sure that i clicked apply button but to no avail. I wonder why it never stays to the settings i set.
I have never had this problem with my previous old laptop. Is this to do with the laptop or if there is anything i need to tweak here?
It's ASUS F3SC model laptop.
Thank you in advance
For the longest time my screen saver will not start automatically. I can make it start by clicking on the scrnsave.scr file (or any of the *.scr files) and it will continue to run beautifully. But at my allotted time (5 minutes of no activity) it does not start. Any reason why? I have disconnected all the USB devices so it's the "raw" machine. It worked when first purchased but not now.
All the posts I've ever seen say the problem is the wireless mouse and/or keyboard, but as mentioned, I disconnect those and it still does not start up on it's own.

I have my screen saver set at 15 minutes. I first noticed something odd this past weekend. The screen saver was on when I drifted off to the land of sweet dreams. Sometime during the night I woke up, looked across the room, and I saw my desktop.
Other than thinking "why do I see my desktop" I thought nothing else about it.
Since then I have actually seen the screen saver disappear and my desktop appear. I was on the other side of the room, not on the computer, the mouse did not get moved, and nothing happened that would cause this.
I've not been able to figure out why all of a sudden the desktop would appear. Does anyone have any clues that might explain this or suggestions on what I can do to keep the screen saver on until I want to go to my desktop?
edit to add: After I made my post earlier, I noticed that after a while the screen saver would come back on and stay on a while before going back to the desktop. It's caught in a loop of going back and forth. In the grand scheme of things, this is not a biggie but I'd still like to know why this is happening.
That's a new one Queen-Evie. I know you have already checked your settings. The only thing I can think of is that something you have set scheduled to do a scan or a program is checking for updates. You could also unplug you keyboard and mouse and see if it still happens. Their could be a circuit in either one of them with a little problem that could cause that to happen.11 more replies
I am curious to know how to lock out the screen saver. Where I used to work when the screen saver came on you had to unlock your computer (ie enter password) and that would allow you access back on the computer, you could not change these settings and I think it was like 15 min before the screen saver would come on and you could not change the screen saver or the "wait" period and you couldnt change the Password protect option it was all greyed out.
Now here at my new job, been here awhile they dont have that and one of the moron coworkers has recently taken upon himself to password protect my computer from time to time (thinks its funny) and change the screen saver options and all that wonderful funny HA HA stuff. I would like to know how to do all that wonderful "Greying out" and disallowing changes to the screen saver and whatever else one can Lock Out.
Is there a program that does this or do I have to go into the Registry and change a few things, I would like to know.
I keep changing the passwords on my computer but during business hours I have to leave my computer available to the Techs that come in and need tool calibrations and so my boss can access files that I keep and they need, so that is my delimna.

I'm not sure how to grey out the checkbox, but here's how you can remove the screensaver tab from the display properties box:Warning: This solution involves making changes to the Windows Registry. Always, always, always make a backup before modifying the registry as improper changes can render the operating system unusable. See here for instructions on backing up your registry.1. Copy and paste the following text into Notepad:Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
"NoDispScrSavPage"=dword:000000012. Save the file as screensaver.reg.3. Right-click on the newly created file and select Merge from the menu.4. Done!
For some reason my screen saver won't work. I've changed everything in the settings to try and get it to work with no results. The only thing I cam think of is I recently downloaded direct x 9.0,could that be the problem?
do you mean direct x 9.0c ?
I remember a general rule of thumb with any NT server, but especially one that is used as a file/print server. That rule is that you don't set a screen saver on it. If you did this would there be a noticeable performance drop in the network? My reason for asking is because there's a very small network (1 NT 4 server, 8 workstations (nt and 95)) that was (is) having some network problems with incredibly slow performance. Among other things I noticed a screen saver was set on the server. I turned it off and am running perfmon all day today to see what happens, but I'm wondering if that one thing could have been the main problem. What do you think?
There is really no reason for a screen saver on any PC or server in my opinion. They look neat and that is about it. My experience has been that they obey Murphy's law when it comes to the timing of demand for system resources with other necessary applications. The very first PC (Windows 3.11) I ever had on a network (Banyan) would lock up and give "out of environment space" (despite having the shell command in config.sys set upwards of 2048) at the moment the screen saver kicked on. Since then I've seen many users both on and off networks, running Win9x and NT on either Banyan or NT NOS with regular repeating unexplained "blue screens", "lock ups", "slow downs" and so on that amazingly coincided with the idle time their screen saver was set for.
If you want security and a screen saver, NT has a great one built in, press CTRL+ALT+DEL to login.
Hope that helps,
mole (sorry I got on a soap box)
Hi there, I run a screen saver after 5 minutes on my computer, and I have noticed latley that the one I use (bubbles) is running eratically, The bubbles don't move smoothly. This of course happens with all my screen saver. To me this means that something is not working correctly, so I checked to see if maybe the screen savers were using all of my memory, or using all of the CPU. what I found was that the CPU (dual core) were running no more than 20% and the memory was at about 1 gig. So I wonder if there would be some other suggestions to find out what is making this machine run this way. I have also tried changing my extended desktop options to see if this would change the performance of this feature.
If you need more info. I am usually working at my desktop.

I am having problems after my computer goes into the screeen saver mode, and it runs for a while. The problem is that when I move the mouse or hit a key, I keep getting the shut down screen. I have to keep hitting the cancel button several times, before it stopps popping up on my desktop.
How can I stop this from happening??
On screen saver I have option "on resume, display welcome screen" instead of password on resume.
If I want to have protected screen save (screen saver password) I can see no option to do so, I checked power/advance tab prompt for password when computer resume from standby but still did not work.
Hi Sinan !
Go to control panel => user accounts and set a password for your user account. Then you'll be able to enable that option in the screen saver tab in the display properties.
I have selected 'bubbles' and a time delay for the screen saver. However it is still just a black screen with a 'log back in screen' and I think hibernation later on.
I just want the screen saver only. Cancel the rest. Where do i find the setup ?
If you don't want password protection when resuming from screen saver, then the tutorial below can show you how to disable that.Screen Saver Password Protection -Enable or Disable
If you don't want to use hibernate at all, then disabling it would be the easiest way.Hibernate - Enable or Disable
If the screen saver is not working at all, then you might see if running a SFC /SCANNOW command may help if you have a corrupted system file at fault.
Hope this helps,
How can I use a video file as a screen saver? I would like the video to loop when the screen saver is activatedMany thanks!Mod Edit: Fixed and closed tags ~tg

I am running XP Pro SP2. There are two people using this computer. The screensaver feature will not work on MY account. It works fine on my wifes account but will not activate on my side. I have checked all the boxes and done just about everything I know...which ain't much. Everything appears to be working fine in the display area of the screensaver. The settings work, the preview works, nothing is grayed out. I do have a problem with downloading software to try out. Maybe one of the "tweaking" programs that I tried out did something to the screensaver utility. I don't know which program it might have been though. Is there somewhere I could download a replacement for the screensaver utility? Can I copy the utility from my wife's account into my account? As you can see I don't know a lot. Any help will be appreciated....Mahalo...Moa Kane
