(Solved) How to configure paths?

Q: (Solved) How to configure paths?

When I open 3ds max I get a number of error messages for example:
The fonts path D:\Program Files\W2KPrograms\Fonts does not exist. Use configure paths to set the locatioin to a path that does exist.
[These messages also include The Import Path D:\Program Files\W2KPrograms\Meshes, The export path D:\Program Files\W2KPrograms\Meshes, The Expressions Path D:\Program Files\W2KPrograms\Express, Previews Path D:\Program Files\W2KPrograms\Previews and Video Path D:\Program Files\W2KPrograms\Videos does not exist. Use configure paths to set the locatioin to a path that does exist.]
I would dearly love to do that but I don't know how???
Can anyone help me to find out how to 'configure a path?'
Many thanks.

I guess this may be a tiny bit off the subject here, but I am attempting this in windows 7.

I have a program file manager tool called 'Directory Opus' that is capable of calling windows external programs and passing them the current directory the file manager is sitting on.

So far so good.

Now I want to call a cygwin (linux/unix emulator for windows) terminal with that file manager.

Checking properties on the cygwin Icon I got the path: C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico -

So it is a path to a command and an argument to that command.

Actually I guess it is 2 arguments to a command since I think '-' in that position means to feed anything on STDIN to the command. At least that would be true in unix shell programming.

So using the Directory opus setup I pass this call:
[email protected]:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - <and here add {s}>'

So the call ends up:
[email protected]:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - {s}'

That call does just what it is supposed to. It passed the current file absolute address however cygwin terminal does not understand the windows path notation. If I were passing it: C:\subdir\blah\ It would just say 'No such file' Cygwin terminal wants to see /cygdrive/c/subdir/blah Or at least I think that is what is happing.

So to cut to the chase.... I'd like to put a little wrapper to Cygwin terminal in there with the code necessary to convert 'C:\subdir\blah\' to '/cygdrive/c/subdir/blah/'

But, I do not know how ... Read more

I would ask on DonationCoder.com specifically this forum:
General Software Discussion - DonationCoder.com

The reason is I know there are a bunch of DO aficionados, who also use Linux, on that forum. I've never tried DO myself. I have played around with CygWin. But it's been a few years.

If the site wants a donation to sign up just explain to Mouser why you want to post etc.. I think he'll be sympathetic.

Hi guys.
I've just tried to use WinMX and found that it is showing the full paths as to where files are stored on the users' HDs.

Can I turn this off? It makes it really difficult to see the file you're looking for, with all this C:\My Documents\My Music\..... crap at the front.

Thanks.

i'm sending this out from my iphone, so please excuse the format and lack of capital letters ;-)
i got a new hp pavilion laptop; os is windows 7 home premium 64-bit. when i booted it up the first time, there was already an administrator account on it, bearing the name of the company who had sent me the laptop. i renamed the user account and the computer to my name; but the paths connected to the user profile and the user profile itself (under "users" on the c drive) still have the old name. i did some reading and it seems that one has to rename the account back to the old name, then create a new administrator account with the name one wants and transfer the profile from the old account to the new one, then delete the old account if everything is working well; however, i believe that these instructions are rather for windows xp than for windows 7, and i have no idea how to copy a profile. i am not a computer geek and cannot fiddle around with the registry, and i'm new to windows 7. so: how can i rename the profile paths and my profile folder to MY name - or is it impossible to change, and will i just have to live with it? i also hope that if the situation cannot be changed, then this is simply a cosmetic 'bug' and won't cause any problems.

thanks in advance for your time and patience

Please can anyone tell me is there a way to reset the java settings so that the paths etc. are ack at their original position thank you P.S i already tried reinstalling java

A:[SOLVED] Reset all java settings and paths to original position

Hello JoeLAD, welcome to TSF!

I'd suggest completely uninstalling and reinstalling the Java JRE in it's default location. Example: C:\Program Files\Java.

Afterwords, from what your trying to fix, you'll need to manually setup your system environment variables so that it will locate what it requires from the JRE. Please refer to this link for instructions to setup the environment variable to locate where your JRE is installed on your system.

If this wasn't helpful, please say so.

I have the latest version of Firefox (computer runs on Windows XP Home with latest patches and service packs). I'm having problems with my Google toolbar and my booksmarks toolbar. They function just fine. Now, when I right-click, then I can choose which toolbars can be displayed or not. I encounter the following problem. If I don't want Google toolbar to be displayed, the bookmarks toolbar vanish. And if I turn off the bookmarks toolbar, Google vanishes. So obviously, there's a confusion between the toolbar-paths. De-installing Google toolbar and re-installing didn't help. How can I correct this problem?

I am using various internet connection devices but the one which has a QoS option on the driver is Broadcom. The Broadcom website does not seem to have any information on how to do this. (What would be the point of enabling QoS if you cannot configure it anyway...?) This should be obvious in regards to anyone who's using the internet at "home" (or other), but I want to put "internet traffic" first; I am sure there are other types of "traffic" being considered here or the QoS probably would not exist; I want to put EverQuest first, then WWW, then IMs as they'll just reconnect when they need to. Any other option suggestions would be alright too , but EQ goes first, this thing has 512 RAM :X.

Just recently, I was having some issues with my pc not powering on. I (unfortunately) have DSL, and sometimes I actually need to unplug my ethernet cable to turn on my pc, then replug in the ethernet...and then again, sometimes even then my pc won't power on right away. I've been told by others besides t.s. (mostly my internet server) that my BIOS needs to be configured (and something to do with re-sequencing it?). Supposedly, you can access your pc's BIOS setup program by pushing a certain key when first turning the pc on - I have an Emachines and the key is Del (found this out at https://iomega-eu-en.custhelp.com/cg...p.php?p_faqid=). However, I can't seem to even access this. Help!

Someone here at tech support suggested my issue could be that the boot order in the BIOS is set to boot from my LAN before my hard drive. Unfortunately, I really only understand 1/2 of this (!) Help!

A:[SOLVED] SP1 configure up to 17% then reverts

I assume you've checked the following:

Before you begin

Before you install SP1, do the following:
• Back up important files. Because this is a significant update to the Windows operating system, it is a good idea to back up your personal files before beginning the installation.
• Make sure you have enough free disk space. Installing SP1 can require a substantial amount of free disk space, up to 4.5 gigabytes (GB) in some cases, though much of that space will be free again after the installation. If you need to create free disk space on your computer, see Strategies for freeing disk space.
• Update any device drivers as necessary. You can do this by using Windows Update, or by going to the device manufacturer's website. For more information, see Update a driver for hardware that isn't working properly.
• If you have an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) connected to your computer, disconnect the connecting serial cable before installing SP1. The installation automatically attempts to detect devices connected to serial ports, and UPS equipment can cause problems with the detection process. It's fine to leave your computer connected to a UPS for power.
• If you are using a laptop computer, connect it to an AC electrical outlet and don’t unplug or restart the computer during installation.
• Close all open programs. Note that if your antivirus program is on, it might slow the installation by scanning each file that is part of the install... Read more

Hello, it's a little bit hard for me to describe my problem as english isn't my primary language, but I hope you'll understand.

Operating systems: Vista and XP (2 laptops)
Router: D-link DIR-635

I just bought this router and used the quick install CD and the router was up and running pretty quickly, but the problem was that I could only find the wireless network with my XP laptop(The vista laptop could find alot of other networks but not this one). So I was going crazy and searching the internet for how to solve this problem and then I read somewhere that I should reset the router and start over... so I did!

But when I had reset the router and was going to start to configure it again I couldn't get in contact with it via the LAN cable even though the lamp on the router shows that a computer is connected. Tried both computers and different cables too!

So what should I do? I've tried to reset it several times, and i've disconnected the power to the router but I still can't connect to it.

I hope you understand what my problem is, thanks!

Best regards Neiph!

Several AVG program files are still running in Task Manager after shutting it down, but the problem persists even if I kill those processes.

Okay, I just successfully installed dd-wrt on my wireless FON router.

I have no clue where to go from there. The wireless signal can be seen by my laptop, and i can connect to it, but if i try to open a web browser, i get a page cannot be displayed. The laptop gets assigned an IP address od: 192.168.1.114, so it is assigning me an IP, i'm just not sure if it is the correct one. read on...

I am assuming this has to do with configuring the wireless router. My wireless FON router is connected to hub or a router (i am not sure, it came with my xbox and it says "Gamester" on it, with 5 ports). The Gamester is connected to my Speedstream 5667 dsl modem.

I am kind of new to this forum, so if you need more info, just ask. Anyone know where I can start to solve this problem?
I can also access the router by typing in 192.168.1.1 into my browser. I think i read somewhere that I need to find the IP of my router? or wireless router? I have no clue

A newbie with Ubuntu and Linux, I installed Ubuntu 10.4 on a computer for my wife. We are used to Outlook Express. After using it for a couple of days, my wife hates Evolution. So I downloaded Thunderbird from the standard repository and installed it.

It does look easier (in theory) to move emails between Outlook Express and Thunderbird, so I am trying to configure Thunderbird and will abandon Evolution with its complications, useful to some but unnecessary for us. We just need a simple mail client, no "keyrings" or "calenders" etc etc.

I can't seem to configure Thunderbird accounts. At support.mozillamessaging.com, the instructions for "configuring an account" say to open the account settings by going to Tools|Account Settings. But when I click on Tools, there is no Account Settings on the menu presented. The menu appearing for "Tools" is only as follows:

Address Book
Saved Files
Add-Ons
Activity Manager
Message Filters
(some greyed-out options here regarding filtering)
Import
Error Console

...and that's it. No "Account Settings"!!!!

Am I doing something wrong? Are the instructions at support.mozillamessaging incorrect (I was vectored to them from the Ubuntu installation!) Or is this a bug or damaged Ubuntu/Thunderbird installation?

We have a problem.

We have a Windows 2003 server that contains files that need to be accessed by a collection of XP Pro clients. We initially set up mapped drives that connected these client computers to the server using a set of security credentials that matched user accounts on the server. These mapped drives "map" when the client logs into XP. Since the local login credentials on the client PCs don't match those on the server, we use "Connect using a different username" to use credentials residing in the Server userbase.

The problem occurs when we have to change the server passwords. After the change, the automatically mapped drives no longer have the correct passwords, so when they try to make the connection to the server, they generate a slew of login failures in the server event log, which then locks out that particular user.

I know that the real solution should be that the users should make the login username and password on their client PC match those on the server. They could also remap the drive using a corrected "different username and password" that also match the server. Unfortunately, this isn't going to happen.

In short, I want to set up a mapped drive to a share on a Windows 2003 Server that only authenticates when the user manually demands that the map happen. This mapping has to occur with a minimum of configuration on the user's end (meaning we can't have him manually setting up the mapped drive every m... Read more

Hi everyone!

I have a Dell Precision T5400 running Win XP x64 Pro, the OS came pre-installed and it's working pretty fine so far, but there are a couple of issues which are bugging me, so there will be more threads about my pc

The first one is concerning Automatic Updates. When I go to Control Panel->Automatic Updates, all options there are greyed out. The selected choice (greyed out too) is "download updates and let me choose to install them", but windows hasn't updated anything since about three weeks when I started using it.

I read in this website some instructions to get it to work

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/aupolicy.htm

I am a local administrator in the pc and did almost everything listed there. Why almost? Because in my registry this location is not present

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ WindowsUpdate

the only location in Policies is "Explorer"

also in the group policy editor, this location doesn't exist either:

=> User Configuration
==> Administrative Templates
===> Windows Components
====> Windows Update

Inside "Windows Components", there's only "Search" and "Windows Media Player"

The rest of the instructions were followed but automatic updates are still not configurable :S

Please help. Thanks!

I just installed Outlook 2007 and it wonít open because it canít connect too MS Exchange server because I donít have one set up. Then it says .ost file is not an offline folder and when I click ok it shuts down.
Does the Office 2007 plus install a mail accounts tab in the control panel of vista64? Because my vista install doesnít have one and thatís the only way I know to setup the email accounts. Is there another way to get into the account settings for outlook?

What I am looking to do is have a "one click" solution to run Verizon's VZAM, connect, and then fire up the VPN client and do the same.

I have managed to create an ugly looking batch file that will indeed fire up the VPN client and connect using some cli/scc commands.

cd "C:\Program Files\CheckPoint\SecuRemote\bin"
scc setmode cli
scc userpass "username" password
scc connect -p "profile"

If I add the following to the top of that mess it looks like the following and will bring up VZAM and auto connect.

cd "C:\Program Files\Verizon Wireless\VZAccess Manager"
"VZAccess Manager"
cd "C:\Program Files\CheckPoint\SecuRemote\bin"
scc setmode cli
scc userpass "username" password
scc connect -p "profile"

Ugly? Yes!! I know very little about scripting or creating batch files, the above will bring up the VZAM and auto connect for me but how do I:

1. Invoke the next piece (VPN)? It stops after the VZAM process.
2. How could I have the VPN piece wait until VZAM is connected?

Hey Guys,
I have a Linksys WAP54g v.2 Wireless access point.
It connects fine, my internet works, i can see my network across it but I can't log into it to configure it. I have lost the set up disk but I thought you could just goto the IP address and set it up directly??
When I type in the IP address I belive it to be it just gives me the old 'page cannot be diplayed' error.
You may ask why I am playing around if it all works, well when I first set it up I didn't secure it (yes my head is looking down in shame) and I'm just trying to secure the signal.

Any idea's would be most handy!

Mucho thanks

Brand new laptop started having a problem with updates. Downloads vast numbers of them, then gets to 8% of configuring, restarts, tries to resume configuring and then gives an error message that it can't configure and is undoing changes.

I have reinstalled (reset) Windows, but still have the problem.

I can still send it back for a hardware repair, but suspect it might be software?

Could someone help?

A:[SOLVED] Acer laptop with Win 8.1 will not configure updates

Have you tried deselecting all the updates and then manually selecting only a few - for example, say 5 or 10 at a time?

I have seen Windows get confused when it has many updates to install. Installing them in smaller blocks often resolves the issue. But it needs lots of patience because you have to go through the Restart process for every block.

As you have described the problem it is unlikely that it is a hardware issue.

I have a number of 3Com switches on my LAN which are just connecting PC's and printers. However, there is a requirement to add further devices such as access points for Wi-Fi and cameras for CCTV. I am wary/concerned that these additional devices will grind by network to a halt with the extra traffic. I have been advised that VLAN may help. Can someone advise or point me in the right direction on to setup/configure this on my switches. Does VLAN mean that if I have a 12 port switch, I can configure ports 1-6 for one purpose, than 7-12 for another????

I might add that my switches are quite old (is there a possibilty that VLAN is not available for old switches?)

A:Solved: Configure VLAN on 3COM Switches

First, I don't see how just adding WiFi would just grind your network to a halt. It's just adding additional network clients on to you network via wireless methods instead of just a wired connection. Now the CCTVs MIGHT cause a network issue if they work via multicasting. But you'd have to have some serious multicasting traffic to cause your network to grind down to a halt.

As far as VLANs are concerned, your switches would have to be managed switches and support 802.1Q. It doesn't matter about the age of the switches (up to a point) as 802.1Q has been around for quite some time. Port based VLANs are another method of segregating traffic but then you'd have issues propagating the VLAN assignments to other switches. Finally, you have to have a router between VLANs for communication to occur between VLANs.

I'm trying to do a simple ip change to the primary lan setting on the router and an error keeps telling me that it is already being used in another pool of ip addresses. In reaction to that I turned off anything that had an ip pool and logged out and then back in again to the router, I tried to change the lan ip again and it still said that it was in another pool or it was invalid. I'm trying to use 192.168.2.X as primary lan and 192.168.12.X as guest lan.

A:Solved: trying to configure a surfboard sbg6580 router

So to confirm:

Under Basic > Setup, change the LAN IP 192.168.2.1 and click on Apply.
Then click on DHCP and confirm the Starting Local Address shows 192.168.2. then a box. That needs to be .2. The Number of CPEs should be no more than 253.

Under Wireless > Guest Network, make sure that the IP address shows 192.168.12.1, the subnet mask as 255.255.255.0, the Lease Pool Start as 192.168.12.10 and Lease Pool End 192.168.12.99. The Lease Time should be left unchanged. If you need more than 89 IP addresses, change the Lease Pool End accordandly.

I have a Seagate Momentus 5400.6 SATA hard drive (9HH132-500) that I am trying to utilize as an external USB drive. I purchased the IDE SATA to USB cable, with 120 VAC power connector cord. The current machine is Windows XP.

The drive shows up in the Device Manager (see attached), but will not display as an accessible drive (for the purpose of loading files and such). I can feel the drive turning.

I'm assuming I am missing a particular step or activity so the drive can become accessible.

Currently, there are no jumpers on the back of the drive, which I believe is the proper configuration for it to be a slave drive.

Here is my Desktop Specs:

Windows XP Svc Pack 3
Mainboard : Asus P5KPL-CM
Network Card : Atheros AR8121/AR8113 PCI-E Ethernet Controller
Current Router - LinkSys BEFSR41 (Hardwired, CATV cable)

Static IP - 192.168.1.100, 255.255.255.0, Gateway 192.168.1.1

Problem: I purchased a new GB router, Dlink DIR825, wireless and 4 ports, and cannot connect to it to set it up. I need to get into it to change its IP address from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.1 and to make a few other changes. I have 6 different ethernet cables, all of which work with my desktop as well as my laptop. I can get into the new Dlink router just fine with my laptop so it is not a bad port on the new Dlink. The cables work with my existing router and my new router using my laptop so it isn't a cable problem.

My internet connection is Hughesnet (DISH) which uses the 192.168.0.1 address, the same as the new router. So here is what I have tried:

1. Powered down Hughes router, new router, and old router.
2. Removed cable from Hughes router to old Linksys.
3. Changed static IP on desktop from 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.0.50 and Gateway to 192.168.0.1.
4. Rebooted
5. Connected ethernet cable from desktop to Port 1 on new router.
6. Powered up new router.
7. Brought up Browser and entered the 192.168.0.1. Nothing happens. The Port light on the new switch shows the connection properly and the other lights are on properly, except for the Internet light which I haven't hooked up yet.

I'm trying to install AutoExNT on Windows XP. I got it from the Windows 2003 resource kit thingy. I'd installed and tested it on my system, and it did what I wanted. I'd installed it from the GUI.

Since then, I've had to do a reinstall of Windows XP, so now this is a fresh installation. I realized that it's much more convienent to reinstall the thing from the command line, so I'm attempting to do so. It's truthfully not the bare command line, but a batch file. The problem is I can't seem to get it right after several reboots. I'm hoping it's a simple error somewhere, but I'm posting it here to save several days more of continous reboots with no success until by trial and error I figure it out.

Not including irealivant code, such as my setup code to install the setup programs, I'll post my code. I've got 2 files. One to install the program, and one to uninstall the program. The uninstallation program seems to be working fine. It's the installation program I'm having trouble with.

A:Paths , Librabries ?

You need to remember that library's only point to the actual file somewhere on the network or on your own machine in the "user" files. If you need to delate something from the library you should delate the file from the actual source "my pictures" My documents" "my music".

But there is a way to make it work like you want.

Just go into Windows Media Player, choose the "organize" tab then "options" then choose the Library tab and set it to "delate files from the computer when delated from the Library. Although I believe that only works if you are delating files from Library of the machine that contains the source files.

That should allow for delating from the Library, but only from the machine that the files reside on, I don't believe it will work accross the network. It think it still works best if you delate from the file source instead of the Library.

Sounds like a permissions issue of some kind.

Right click App Paths then click Permissions
Administrators and System should have Full Control and Read access, Power Users should have Read and Special, and Users should have Read access. Creator Owner should have Special. These should all be greyed out, meaning they are inherited.

Thanks,

royeo

A:How do you interpret paths like C:\DOCUME~1\...

Hi.

This kind of path is contraction of the real folder or file names so that they are compatible with the old 8.3 DOS filename format. I don't know why it is necessary, but in (my) theory it works this way:
Long names are stripped of all spaces, even between words.
If the resulting string, without extension, is longer than 8 characters, the 6 leftmost characters are taken and an index appended, to distinguish between similar names.
So "ASDFGHJKLQWE" becomes "ASDFGH~1" while ASDFGHJKLRTZ" becomes "ASDFGH~2"

So the one you submitted translates to something like

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp
Where username is different for each user of the computer.

On my main PC i am running Windows 7 Homepremium 64bit. My Pc is connected via ethernet cable to BT Homehub3.

I have another PC running Windows XP SP3 connected via WiFi and a laptop also Wndows XP and connected vis WiFi.

I have a Kodak C110 AiO printer connected to the home pc via USB cable.

I have tried to set up printing on the other PC and laptop and the Printer is shown in the network map, but cannot and all my efforts have now disrupted the network; viz I cannot access shared files on the Network.

On the Home PC the network is called Network 2.

I want it to be the Homegroup or Work Group but cannot seem to make this happen.

Any suggestions please?

A:How do I reset my network paths

If I take it you want to print on the main PC from the other two ? I have a similar situation and set it up giving the main PC a fixed IP and then when adding the printer to the other two I used the local port method i.e \\fixed IP address\printer share name, having initially shared the main printer - you will need to install the printer driver on the remote systems. My main PC is ethernet and all the others are wireless.

Hope this is of help.

So I've been trying to use system file checker, and encountered a problem where it can't repair a file. I found this page detailing how to manually fix the problem:

Use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

I was fine until step 2, where it says

"For example, type takeown /f E:\windows\system32\extremely_simplified_example.dll"

The problem is, my CBS.log file says stuff like:

Cannot repair member file [l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"
Unable to repair \SystemRoot\WinSXS\Manifests\\[l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"

and I don't know how to translate that into a path to use with the takeown command. I searched for that file using explorer and found a dozen different copies, so I'm not sure which one to replace.

Semi-related questions: Can I just replace them all? I'm planning on using a copy of the file from a similar system that works, is that ok?

Thanks!

A:Help understanding CBS.log file paths

Hello Southbound, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Those instructions there are fine, but just a bit vague. OPTION THREE in the tutorial below can help give you only the SFC results to help make it easier to go through.SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Next, the tutorial below can show you how to extract files from your installation disc to replace any listed files that SFC cannot repair.Extract Files from Windows 7 Installation DVD
Before doing anything, please post back and upload your sfcdetails.txt file to see what all may be wrong, and if it any file that cannot be repaired is worth worrying about.Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums
To help interrupt what it says to know the path:Cannot repair member file [l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"
Unable to repair \SystemRoot\WinSXS\Manifests\\[l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"
The first line says that SFC cannot repair the FWPKCLNT.SYS file.

The second line is the path of the file. "SystemRoot" is a variable "%SystemRoot%" that is actually just a shortcut for "C:\Windows". This leaves you with the file path as:C:\Windows\WinSXS\Manifests\FWPKCLNT.SYS
Doing a search on the C: drive for the listed FWPKCLNT.SYS file would help give you all of it's locations if needed as well.

Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

Hello! I recently upgraded my computer with an SSD for boot and main programs and use my 1TB HDD for general programs and media storage. The thing is I want it to by default install to my D:\ drive.

Now the only solution I see is editing the registry ProgramFilesDir - Which has some serious flaws. It will attempt to launch every program off of the D:\ drive even when it is stored on C:\ and about 9 out of 10 times, it still default installs to C:\.

Does anyone have a fix for this?

I use WinAso Registry Optimizer; when I run it my computer crashes when it gets to Invalid File Paths, but when I remove the invalid file paths flag, it completes the process just fine. I would like some advice on correcting invalid file paths...thanks.

A:Invalid File Paths

Don't use registry cleaners. If you continue to use them, chances are that crashes will be among the least of your problems. Those things are junk, do only harm, and you should be thankful you were even able to reboot. Performance is not improved by using them, they remove needed entries, and they create their own "errors" so that they can "fix" them, making worse errors in the process.

How would I set up Windows 8 so that I can edit the `path` environment variable in a fixed pitch font such as `Console` or `Lucida Console`? I don't want to change the font for other parts of Windows - only where paths are displayed. It seems I've been doing this in a terribly inappropriate font for many years and my tired eyes aren't great for semicolons.

In windows 7 it was so easy by going to control panel, but now is much harder(you`ll see what i mean):

We are stuck for the time being using Window Media Player to Rip/Burn/Sync music with. I've set the paths for the ripped music and library to go to a separate partition/drive, but each time the system is reset, WMP resets the paths back to c:\documents\ etc........
Should this be the way things work?
Thanks for your time,

There are still doubts about what the possible and legal upgrade paths are for Windows 7.

Below I tried to compile some information in a way which I hope will be helpful.

Thanks to my friend Kari for his valuable contribution
Any other additions or comments are much welcome

Definitions:
1) Upgrade: to move from Windows XP or Windows Vista to Windows 7
2) Custom or Clean Install: wipes the previous installation and install Windows 7 anew. Does not preserve user files
3) In-Place Upgrade: upgrades from specific versions of Vista to specific versions of Windows 7, preserving user files and programs.
4) Upgrade version: Windows 7 license for those who own a valid license of XP or Vista
5) Full retail version: Windows 7 license to install on any PC, independent of previous installations or ownership. Can be reinstalled on other computers (when activated the previous installation is no longer valid)
6) Full OEM version :Windows 7 license to install on one PC, independent of previous installations. Can only be re-installed on same computer and hardware setup

Upgrade paths
The chart below shows in what situations one can perform an in-place upgrade (e.g. from Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional) without the need to migrate files or programs, and the situations when one needs to do a Custom (Clean) Install and replace the data in the target disc. This is the case for all Windows XP owners or Windows Vista Starter. In this case you will need to migrate your personal files ... Read more

I can't figure out how to edit booloader paths.

I had the triple boot working- 7, vista, WUBI ubuntu. Then I installed Snow Leopard and tried to add it in via easyBCD.....and all hades broke loose.

Anybody know how to fix? And how to actually set OSX to boot from windows, since there's no drive letter?

A:Edit Bootloader Paths

Open an elevated command prompt in Windows 7

IMPORTANT: make a backup of your bcd file first. To do that, type:

Quote:

bcdedit /export C:\SAVEDBCD

For Vista:

Quote:

bcdedit /set {*insert here*} device partition=F:

* insert the Windows vista BCD ID, too small for me to read (take out the *'s)

ok, Vista should be working now, please test it to make sure

For Ubuntu: - optional; this will rename "nst Linux Loader" to "Wubi Ubuntu"

Quote:

bcdedit /set {*insert here*} description "Wubi Ubuntu"

* insert the "nst Linux Loader" BCD ID, too small for me to read (take out the *'s)

It is getting late, so try those, which should get Vista back on its feet, also go to the elevated cmd and type "bcdedit" please post back the results right-click the cmd prompt and select "mark" then highlight every thing, then post the results. Please copy the results, so i will be able to copy and paste

Also, what is the "EFI snow leopard" partition for???

My documents are located in D:\Dropbox\MyOwnDocuments

I no longer use Dropbox; so I would like to move them all to D:\MyOwnDocuments

Problem is that I have many portable programs there, and also program files and program data for programs running from my C drive. Not to mention various other shortcuts to documents or folders in D:\Dropbox\MyOwnDocuments

Is there a quick way to check which programs / shortcuts need to be changed? Or (better) is there a way to change these paths automatically?

Thanks for any input.

Will the Windows Vista Upgrade path allow me to upgrade from 64 bit Home Premium to 32 bit Ultimate? I need to do this to use my legacy software without re-installing everything.

The last that I read, going from 32 to 64 required a CLEAN install. Based on that I would think that it would be the same for 64 to 32.

Do yourself a favor, and if a registry cleaner offers to do something you don't understand, decline. It's far easier to clean the system to death than to actually fix something with a registry cleaner.

Hello,

I can´t find a solution to this problem anywhere in the Net, so maybe you guys can help me. I just did a reinstall of windows 8.1 on my desktop using the option to keep all data AND program files. The process went on very well....BUT when I restarted some programs' exe files are not found by Windows when I try to open them (Ccleaner and Office 2010 are examples) Ccleaner I uninstalled and reinstalled but the message is the same " Windows cannot find [path], make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again...." Office 2010 I ran the repair option but the message came on again, so I reinstalled it and couldn´t open it because the message came on again. I think paths got messed up somehow because those files are certainly in my hard drive. Please can you help me out?

Hello,

A little background first.

I have a shortwave radio that is of a new type where a lot of the functions such as filters, etc. is done via software that resides on the PC.

The radio is mfg. by the WINRADIO company.
The model of the radio is a G31 DDC

After playing with the radio, it automatically Saves the frequencies that you have listened to, and puts them into Memory to be able to recall them later.
The file that it creates is called "User Memory"..

I seem to have the User Memory File in the right place, I think, but the "path" to get there seems to be different.

I have one path of:
Libraries/ Documents/ WINRADIO/ G31 DDC/ User Memory

And another path of:
C:/ Users/ Bob/ My Documents/ WINRADIO/ G31 DDC/ User Memory

They both seem to lead to the correct file of User Memory.

a. My main question: Is there really only one file of User Memory, but two different ways or paths to get to it ?

b. What's with Libraries; I've never set that up ? What are they ?

c. Notice that one path has My "Documents", and the other just "Documents".

If anyone could explain this for me, I would be most appreciative.

Much thanks,
Bob

Firstly, context: My student edition of Autodesk Maya was not working (something about the license being invalid or 'not found', and so when I searched for the error message online, a solution was to go into Environments and Paths, and replace/edit or add one for C:/Autodesk. It didn't work, and I ended up just uninstalling and reinstalling the program manually for it to work.
However, apparently I screwed around really badly in there, because now important things won't open, such as my MalwareBytes program. When I try, a window will popup and say this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
The system could not find the environment option that was entered."
So, naturally, I try to find/open the Environments and Paths thing again, right? Nope. I can't open that either:
"Windows cannot find '%windir%\system32\SystemPropertiesAdvanced.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."
Even though I typed 'Environment' in my search bar to find it.
Then recently, Origin tried to install an update on my laptop, but it couldn't find the ProgramFiles, and so there was an error in installation. As a result of this, Chrome is not opening up immediately when I click it. It waits about five-six minutes after I've clicked it. I think it's what caused it, because it didn't do it before yesterday, when I tried to install the update.
So basically: how can I fix this despite knowing little to nothing about computers? How can I go into the Environments with... Read more

I was wondering what would be a good career path to follow or combine with a mcse certification. Would it be better to go the cisco way and get the ccnp or with red hat and do the rhce? I am currently in South-Africa and been around to our local job sites but it seems that demand for both are low at the moment.
