downloaded avi-->mpeg-2-->DVD+R

Q: downloaded avi-->mpeg-2-->DVD+R

Okay, somebody please correct me if I'm wrong. My main goal is I want to burn avi files onto blank DVDs files I have on my computer. If I'm not mistaken, based on all the information I've read from lots of people on this site, I assume the following is correct, but if not, somebody with experience in this subject please help!
1. i have a downloaded .avi movie from the internet around 700,000Kb or so
2. I'm thinking that I'm supposed to use VirtualDub to capture and make a file of JUST the audio from the file and make it a .WAV
3. Then I use TMPGEnc to convert ONLY the video of the original downloaded file to mpeg-2.
4. Now I'm confused. Somehow or another I guess I'm supposed to fuse the two separate files together and "shrink" the newly created mpeg-2 file. And since the complete file is going to be really big, do I have to "compress" it somehow so it will fit onto the standard DVD+R? And can I do all this with Ulead Movie Factory 2E? That's the program that came with my DVD burner.
5. If I'm leaving something out PLEASE tell me, folks! You all have helped me every time in the past, and I am really grateful for that.

I got the paid quick time Pro v7. It supposedly will "convert-to-ipod* the formats MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4. So far it converts the MPEGs with video but no audio. How do I find out what kind of MPEG files I'm working with, to see if my files will convert? I tried GSpot and played in various players to seek file properties. I can't find those MPEG numbers anywhere. They seem to be iimportant to quick time Pro's "convert-to-ipod" capability.
Also any tips at all about using quicktime Pro's "convert-to-ipod" feature will be appreciated.

Hello all

I was doing a photo frame converting so far that we've done music and plenty of old family photo on the digital photo frame Pictoria.

Anyway my mum wish to add some old families video so we capture home video to camera from old projector.

Anyway i got whooping 12 GB of video stored in my external HDD and i want to convert them to be compaitable with photo frame. The photo frame say the frame can play with

MPEG-1
MPEG-2
MPEG-4

Thanks

This need to sort out soon so we can test out on small card to see if video has worked then we can estimate which right SD memory space to be inserted in the photo frame.

Anyway, can you know the proper name of "old projector" so i can research them a bit because i would like to know and also can you tell me that AVI file is bigger or smaller then MPEG file.

Thanks

Aloha,
I want to buy a video movie camera and was wondering about the Mpeg compression. If I bought the Mpeg 1, is there a program that will turn Mpeg 1 into another format or would it be best to get a Mpeg 4. The reason that I am asking is because of the price. TIA

A:Mpeg 1 & Mpeg 4 Question

Mpeg 4 (or DivX) was a codec brought in to rival mpeg 2 in compression and quality. The analogue camcord for mpeg 1 will not record in as good a quality as Mpeg4. Mpeg editing is quite slow (in comparison to avi/dv), but DivX may be quicker. If you're recording in analogue you'll need a good capture card too (£150+). Here's some good all-round info : http://www.cspry.co.uk/links/video_digital_2.html http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

I have a problem playing MPG & MPEG files on Windows Media Player (hereafter as WMP). I says it "encountered an unknown error". It always used to work and just stopped working. I can however play any other type of file compatible with WMP. I have tried moving from version 9 to 10, then to 11 Beta, with no luck. I have installed different CODECs as well, with same result. Programs like Power DVD and DivX won't play the files either. However the only program that does work with them is Nero ShowTime. I would like to use WMP instead. I lastly tried repairing my Windows installation, no luck, and ended up formatting my PC, which did resolve my problem. Not even 2 weeks thereafter it did the same thing again. I don't want to format my Windows again! Please help!!!!!!!!

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out how to watch a movie I have stored on my computer (MPEG) on my PlayStation Portable. I know that only .MP4 files can be played and I know there are video file format conversion programs available to download from the internet. I've downloaded 2 before but neither worked. I've followed their directions in moving the files to the correct PSP folder and with the correct renaming, but nothing seems to work. I know this can be done and my PSP does play UMD and downloaded MP4 movies (I have downloaded an MP4 clip from the PSP website so they could show me how to download movies). I have been able to do everything on a PSP but this so far (excluding downloading a game demo, which I don't care about that much). Also, I have the newest Firmware for it (2.71) so I don't understand.

If anyone can help me with this it's very appreciated. Thanx.

I have some Mpeg-4 files that i wanted to convert to avi to put on my son and daughters innotabs. Now i have downloaded MPEG steam clip to do the transfer but the files after are massive. For instance an 18MB file has now turned into 136MB. Is there a way of getting a smaller file transfer?

Now i'm sure that most of you tech guys have heard about the innotab having problems with sound not being loud enough on the innotab on some avi files. Now on the mpeg stream clip software there is a audio option that i have increased to +10db and then asked the software to do a file transfer from MPEG-4 to avi and also audio increase. Well the file then increased from 1GB to 7GB!!

I have used a different software; Virtual dub to increase the volume and it did increase the volume but also doubled the file size.

Thanks Neil

A:MPEG-4 to Avi

First, different codecs have different levels of compression. So when converting from format to format the file sizes are different. The mp4 format has good compression. AVI is a container and can contain numerous codecs, so file size will vary based on the codec used. However, the files will be larger than mp4. You can try using different codecs or reduce the quality.

Audio (volume) does not affect file size.

Q: Mpeg-4

sorry if this is in the wrong place, but how do i change an MPEG-4 audio file into an MPEG Layer 3 Audio file? because i need to add data on some songs for my psp e.g. track artist, album title etc. i know i can do it on an MPEG-4 but it won't show up. any help would be grateful!

A:Mpeg-4

First of all, what type of MPEG4 audio file is it? Is the file-extension ".aac", ".mp4" or ".m4a"?

Some devices may only support reading tags if the audio is in the rigth type of container. If it has the ".mp4" or ".m4a" extension you could try to convert it to an ".acc" (or do the opposite if it's already an acc). Converting an MPEG4 audio file between raw acc and mp4/m4a doesn't make the quality of the file worse.

If changing the container doesn't work, you could try rewriting the tags with another application like Foobar2000.

I don't think converting it to an MP3 would be a good idea since you would lose some quality even if you used a high bitrate. The best option would be to figure out why the PSP won't display the tags.

Upon downloading movies, they convert via codec to MPEG. My DVD player does not accept the MPEG format. My DVD player only plays DVD video discs, Video CDs, CDs with mp3files, WMA files andéor JPEG files on them as well as audio CDs.

Is it possible to convert the MPEG to JPEG or WMA format and how is it done.

I'm hoping that someone on your tech support can resolve this problem. I am not a techy and if possible, could you put the answer back in "laymans terms".

Thanks,

I have a project in school to make a movie on iMovie, sounded simple enough. Being kinda knowledgable when it comes to vid editing I thought it would be easy. The one problem is that I have to edit it on a iMac with iMovie. (I hate macs, at least the ones at my school). I tried to bring in video clips but they are all in .mpg or .mpeg and iMovie does not recongnize them. Are there any programs that will convert the .mpg & .mpeg to .mov.

My Persario crashed some time back so I purchased system restore discs from HP. Problem is, I tried to play a DVD and I get the error that I need a DVD decoder. Previous to the crash, DVD movies could be played. Seems I will have to purchase software. Roxio sells a download for $14.99, but wants $16.99 for a back up disc. My question is...since I am a cheapskate....can I download the software to a CD and save some bucks? I got a PC with the same problem.....no DVD decoder due to it crashing a while ago and I never tried playing a movie untill I discovered my Persario (laptop) was missing the thing and checked it. Samo-samo. Thanx in advance for any response to this basic (everyone knows....except me) type question.

Try TMPGEncode. You re-encode your video, then use whatever burning software you ordinarily would, just be sure that you specify the correct type of video: VCD/SVCD/DVD.

Hope this helps,

Hi all

I have just burnt 4 dvds to my HD but it could only do it to the MPEG format, quite annoying cos it cuts the whole movie up in to 4-5 sections, i want to now convert (if thats what i need to do???) it to AVI format so it can be placed on my IPOD,

Am i right in thinking that if i do change the format to AVI that the movie will be just one single file??

And is there any freeware that can do this conversion?

Thanks

Hi, I have some Video-TS folders with two music concerts each in them. When you play them they come up like they were still on disk and you get a screen where you have to choose to view either the first or second concert. You click on one or the other to choose.

I want to convert them to MPEG 4 so I can load them to my iPod Classic. I ran the first folder through Handbreak and only the first concert converted.

How do I get both to convert?

Any way to split them into seperate files?

I was wondering if anyone knew of any good software for converting mpeg files to Avi. I'm not sure which file format of the 2 is actually better quality. I'm wanting to put more files to cd..and .mpeg seems to allocate me enough space for only 2 files at best. Would Avi be comparable to what .mp3 is and Mpeg be to what a WAV file as far as Quality,File size, and Compression? thanks in advance.

A:MPEG Conversion

you can find out lots at dvdrhelp
- user guides, software guides, and forum site for all things DVD and related.

basically it depends on your viewing preference and the quality of the file you start with:

PC only - .avi works fine although .mpg can be higher quality (depending on what conversion settings you used to encode it)

TV through DVD player - you need to convert to .mpg (as a VCD or SVCD cd) to play them and it usually is better quality (again depending on your conversion settings)

VCD is approximately VHS quality
SVCD can be as good as DVD

a good quality VCD or SVCD can hold 60-70 minutes of film on one 700 Mb/80 minute cd although there are some conversions that allow up to 120 minutes on a cd (more minutes = lower quality generally)

usually the conversion is .avi to .mpg but you can use VirtualDub (link in the tools section) to save a .mpg back to .avi

So basically you just want to embed subs?

Anyhow I would convert with formatfactory (to mp4) then embed with this

YAMB 2.1.0.0 beta 2 - VideoHelp.com Downloads

The easier route would probably be to convert straight to mkv and embed the subs as you convert.
There's a number of apps that will do that for you but it's not listed among your preferred formats.

Hi,

I am trying very hard to convert some family home movies recorded with an old analog recorder in the late 80s/early 90s. I have Win2000, an ATI All in Wonder Pro video card, and a SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 sound card, all with the latest drivers. I have a 1.7 GHz AMD Duron Processor and an 80 GB HD, but only about 40 GB available. I'm also using a Sony DVD Writer, but this has never been a problem.

Anyway, I'm using Nero, which came with the burner, and is growing increasingly more frustrating. I tried capturing video straight to MPEG, and though it seemed like a good idea, it did not turn out at all. So I captured to AVI, which works great, but the problem is obviously it takes up a lot of space. Every time I try compressing the video down to MPEG from AVI, the sound seems to get out of synch with the video, so short of burning straight from AVI (and therefore only being able to put maybe an hour's worth of video on a DVD), I don't know how to solve this.

I'm new to this whole thing, but I certainly know computers well enough, so feel free to offer any advice on the best ways to capture - what formats, what software, anything. I've experimented around but it's quite possible I've missed something.

Thanks for any help,

Beau

The quality, when converting avi to mpeg, can depend on the rendering tool used. Here's a few free dv editors to experiment with:

The first thing to note about this comparison is that the footage I'm using is from a high quality source. Video captured from VHS or other low quality sources may not exhibit as much detail loss since there isn't much to lose. Aslo note that this clip was hand picked for this experiment. The lights are moving and flashing so the examples do a good job of illustrating the differences. Other things to note are that I'm using JPG's which themselves are a lossy format and you're not going to use a bitrate of 3000 for a 720x480 video. I've only done so here to more fully illustrate the differences between using AVI or MPEG as a source. The purpose of DV-AVI or any uncompressed AVI is not as a final product but as medium for archiving or a source for use in editing and authoring discs.

Currently no standalone DVD players will play DV-AVI and as far as I know even a 16x DVD drive won't play them directly from the disc. At some point you have to convert to MPEG. This should be done once and only once to maintain the highest quality.

Probably the most important of these screenshots is pic 3 and 4.

Test 1
My source video is a DV-AVI from a Canon GL2. I encoded the AVI to two seperate files,8000CBR and 3000CBR. I also reencoded the 8000 CBR to 3000CBR.

Here'a a screenshot of the raw AVI:
The 8000CBR MPEG, notice the edges of the center light produce a little macroblocking. Very little and would be imperceptible to most when it's play... Read more

Hi,

I hope someone can help me with my TAFE Video trailor project.

I used smartRipper to create the VOB files. I'm using FlaskMPEG to convert it back to AVI files, I've put the premier plugin into the .exe file. I ended up with 5 VOB files.

Flask works but crashes when the file size reached 399mb, could it be a problem with the program? I've plenty of space on the Hard Drive and 512 DDR ram. Is their a better program out there or could I be doing something wrong.

Thanks

You could try Winzip, but that doesn't compress much.

VirtualDub is a good program, and it explains on how to split avi files:

OK, here's my dilemma.

I have a bunch of full tapes for my Mini-DV camcorder. I have a firewire cable, and an SB Audigy 2 with a firewire port. No problems there.

The thing is, I can't figure out how to turn the AVIs that I port from the tapes into MPEGs. I can burn them to a DVD with menus and such, but I want just a raw MPEG that I can then backup to a DVD as a data file.

Is there a program that will convert the DV file to an MPEG (preferrably free, of course).

I've read something about a hardware encoder, also. Where would I find one, and how much do they run?

Thanks,

Hi all

I am in the process of transferring some old analogue VHS tapes to my pc running Vista with a view to re-editing them in "Windows Movie Maker". I am using a "One Touch Video Grabber" to do this. As I want to keep the quality as high as possible I have selected "DVD" from the list of formats available with this device. The files arrive OK into the chosen folder and appear as MPEG with the icon showing balloons with MPEG written in the centre.

So far so good. These files will play OK in "Windows Media Player" but are impossible to import into Movie Maker which displays a message to this effect. This makes things a bit difficult.

Vista normally shows avi/mpg/ etc files as a thumbnail frame of the film in question with the icon of the program that opens them in the bottom right hand corner.( eg a little yellow arrow in the case of Media Player or a red teddy bear in the case for IrfanView) But this does not happen with these MPEG files, they remain as the MPEG balloon icon. However, for some reason I have found that the icon "MPEG" will suddenly be displayed as normal and then the file CAN be imported to Movie Maker. Mostly they remain unchanged and cant be used. I have no idea what causes this.

If I set the Grabber to import AVI or WMV or WMA etc the files come over quite OK and display normally in Vista. (ie film frame thumbnail)

Anybody have any idea what might be going on here, and how I can remedy this?

A:MPEG problem

The easiest is probably if you convert those files to .wmv. Use this program ( Format Factory - Free media file format converter ) which is very easy to use and does an excellent job in terms of quality. If you want to edit the videos and care about quality, I would not use WMM. The output quality of WMM is dismal. I use this program ( Lossless Video Editor, Splitter, Joiner for AVI,FLV,WMV,WMA,MP3,WAVE,ASF files ) that I bought for $19.95 (lifetime license). It does a superb job and the quality stays what it was. Try the 14 day trial, it will not disappoint you. Suggest though you read the documentation because there are some restrictions. E.g. you cannot mix apples and oranges.
