This is about my Windows XP computer, not the Windows 7.

I went to a website named 5StarSupport.com for information and clicked a link about why my computer was slow. This is the message that I received.

This is a fatal error and IP. Board cannot function while this issue persists.

This issue is generally caused by changing your character set in the ACP to one that does not support data stored in the rest of your settings, or by restoring a database backup/completing a server transfer and importing your database tables using the wrong character set or collation. You should contact IPS Technical Support for further assistance. Does anyone have any advice about this?

A:Fatal Error: Your settings Could not be read by IP. Board

Sounds like the site was having an issue not your PC. That message would indicate a failure of the site's software.

Hi

This is the full error message I encountered--> An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data File: \Boot\BCD

1) I have an old Dell Vostro 410, Windows Vista, configured to RAID 1 the whole time.

2) I wasn't able to boot it up one day, pressing the on button only got an amber light momentarily. From the symptom,  I replaced the CMOS battery as suggested by someone online and the PC was able to be powered up but it got to a blue screen--> https://www.dropbox.com/s/nyeoq0gwz4i3f2b/2013-12-21%2000.44.17.jpg

3) I realized that's because all the settings on BIOS has been wiped out after I took out the old battery, the "SATA mode" in BIOS was set to IDE instead of RAID, so I set it back to RAID as shown--> https://www.dropbox.com/s/u6oxdg8m092v0vr/2013-12-23%2000.01.31.jpg

4) I tried rebooting the the system again, this time I can see that RAID has been setup accordingly-->  https://www.dropbox.com/s/a708qln2oehrm75/2013-12-23%2000.03.57.jpg   and  https://www.dropbox.com/s/1sfrpfrxtkgke2n/2013-12-22%2023.58.37.jpg

5) But the rebooting was terminated with the message "an error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data" --> https://www.dropbox.com/s/orgkn29qaj0nxsb/2013-12-22%2017.48.20.jpg

6) Following the on screen instruction, I tried booting from "Windows installation" CD to repair it, however after pressing a key on the following screen,... Read more

When you removed the CMOS battery it set the BIOS to the default settings.  I suspect you will have to rebuild your RAID configuration.

Hi, I was running Windows 7 on a Dell Vostro 3700 Laptop..After doing a spyware scan and finding and deleting all the entries I found, the next time I turned it on I get the error: oxc000000f "An error occured while attmepting to read the boot configuration data File: \Boot\BCD"

I have looked online for solutions and tried using the Windows 7 disc (a copy) and also tried using 3 recovery disks, these all fail because it just stays completely black with a cursor (left for hours even) or I get a error message something around the lines of "insert correct boot media into the correct boot device" and I have no idea what this means. I cannot do a repair because I can only get the Windows disc to load if I remove the hard drive?? this is the only way I have got it past the green loading bar, so I am stuck and have no idea what to do..it only seems to respond to cds if the hard drive is removed?.. this all happened very suddenly and now I have a very expensive ?800 paperweight.. Any help massively appreciated!

To add to this - I also tried the command prompt typing the bootrec.exe code that I found on the internet..selecting command prompt from the option when the Windows 7 disc was loaded, but basically it came up with an error of some sort and it had a drive letter of X:/ on the command prompt ?? ..Also to get to this the hard drive was removed because like I said I cannot get the discs working with it in.. I'm guessing this means the ha... Read more

Go to your BIOS and set the CD as the first boot device, your hard drive as second.

If this lets you boot from the Win7 CD with the HDD installed run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times.

Hi all, im getting that message upon startup. Im running windows 7.
It requests for the windows recovery CD to be inserted, so when I put the CD in to boot I get a "windows is loading files" then a starting windows with the windows logo then just a black screen with a cursor, I left it like this several times for at least an hour an nothing happened.
I can't press F8 to access safe mode etc, nothing will happen.
Pressing F12 to boot from CD just does the same thing as putting the CD in normally.

Help please!?

A:An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data

It seems the CD is damaged.
Burn a new Windows 7 Recovery CD on another computer.
You can download the image or make a copy of a functional Windows 7 Recovery CD.

Boot the new Recovery CD and run automatic StartUp Repair up to three times as sugested in the forum manuals !

Good luck!

Hi,

I have exactly the same issue as the person on this page, however I have already tried the three solutions and neither work, further explanation below.

http://social.technet.microsoft.com.../thread/022386ba-a445-44ba-97f7-d8ba4b6cc54b/

I was watching a DVD on my PC last night when it began to stutter and finally the system completely froze. I would like it 5 min and then the PC would work again for roughly 5 sec before crashing again, I let this go on for about 20mins but the PC never fixed itself so I rebooted. On rebooting I got the above message.

1. My first attempt to fix it was using safemode, this however didn't work and it prompted me to use the repair progam on the Vista installation disk .

2. I booted from the vista disk and tried a start-up repair. This ran, said something was fixed and asked me to reboot. I did this but to no avail therefore I went back to the repair centre.

3. I did not have system restore turned on so this option was not useful to me.

4. I then read something suggesting I use Bootrec. However I tried running bootrec /RebuildBcd but it could not find my OS, instead I used the following commands;

* bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
* c:
* cd boot
* attrib bcd -s -h -r
* ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
* bootrec /RebuildBcd

This however didn't work either.

5. I left the PC overnight and now things seem to be worse. When I try and use repair centre it does not actually detect a HDD with Vista installed, it does however still let me p... Read more

"Can't read ip configuration". That is the message I get on my gateway when I try to run winipcfg. What could the problem be?

It does not have a modem and the network configuration is very simple. Bound with Tcp/ip and Netbeui protocol, having the Netbeui set as the default protocol. There is no dns and no gateway.

Hello,

I'm having the following problem.
is it possible to read IP address / subnet mask settings from some configuration file?
For example, the easiest way is to go to properties of LAN. But what if that hard drive is placed as secondardy HDD in another computer?
Now I need to dig into some files to read these settings in Windows XP. Can you tell me where this data is kept? Is it in registry?

Since I am in charge of this sub-forum, I will indicate you the few steps to have a suitable security set-up, and keep having it safe.

1 - Read this guide I made. Depending of your Level of Paranoia and Expertise, feel free to include some or all of the layers.

2 - Once the guide read. Chose the security solution you think would be best for you, and don't blindly follow people advices (some are fanboys and will say their favorite is the best). Take time to read and understand what each software can do, and even trial them.

3 - Once chosen. Learn ALL the features/options of the software for a decent amount of time, I suggest 1 month as a minimum. Then you can adjust it properly to your needs.

4 - Do not change your AV every few days or week, you will never master one well enough.

5 - Do not add unnecessary security software. The more you add, the more your setup will be subjected to surface attacks, especially if you barely know if they can works together.
Note: Once your set up has been posted, I will check it and if I find it secure, I will apply my approval stamp on your thread.

I am trying to assist a friend.
He had an issue a couple of months ago with someone trying to extort money for "fixing lots of issues on this machine with their wonderful application that he could buy". He realized he was being scammed part way into the conversation and broke off the communication.
He told me about the problem and I looked at his machine. I noticed that the F: Drive partition had been locked with bitlocker. I told him that I could clear the locked drive but couldn't see what was on it. I made an image backup of the system (in case anything went wrong) onto an external drive and then proceeded to re-format the F: partition. After the re-format was complete everything seemed to be okay with the machine and he had an accessible F: drive again.

About two days ago he started to receive the following message on startup:
"Startup Commander was unable to read configuration for drivers. These areas will not be available."

I downloaded the system information from his machine and have attached it below:

Hi,I have fundamentally the same problem as Laura H from this thread http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic342716.html.I've had problems with these fake antivirus programs before and they really did a number on my laptop. I treated the problem using various tools mostly malware bytes and deleting some suspect files.Been working fine for the most part however today out out of nowhere I was attacked by malware doctor. I deleted the suspect file from the temporary internet files folder and ran malware bytes that detected trojan and deleted. Shortly after drwatson ??? was shut down and some time later I think explorer shut down because my desktop went back to basics....no theme, desktop wallpaper etc. the windows 95 look if you grasp what I'm trying to get at. A:Hard Drive canNOT Be Read, Computer won't boot. Read Error

Hi malpert and welcome to the TechSpot Forum

As a laptop only has the ability to support 1 harddrive your option is to remove the drive from the laptop and connect it to a desktop PC using a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor and try to read the files on it, however I would download the test tools from the makers website and run a thorough test on the drive to ensure readability of the drive.

Remember though if the drive has failed mechanically then any data may be lost and you will need to use one of the professional data recovery services such as "ontrack data recovery" to get it back.

I'm having a problem with my sister in law's computer. Originally, she had that annoying XP 2008 virus/spyware, which I think I managed to get rid of with Malwarebytes' Anti Malware and System Mechanic 7. Now I have a new problem. After receiving a recent download from microsoft, upon restarting, I get the blue screen of death with this message;

I can't get anywhere into Windows, I've done F2, F8, F12, everything I could think of without risking more damage since I'm not trained for this. I've booted from the system mechanic CD with the Hard Drive recovery, and while it said it found and fixed a problem, it didn't fix this one. I have no windows CD. The computer is a Dell, and it's running Windows XP service pack 2 with Explorer 6. Heeeeeelp! Other than the F keys, I can't get anywhere with this computer.

I think rebooting could maybe make things worse, so I figured it would be better to ask for advice before attempting to reboot again, so I don't have the scanning information required.

I began to have problems with my computer this morning (June 29). Last night I had let windows install its updates, rebooted, and left the computer on overnight. When I got up the next morning, it had an error about win32.exe encountering an error and needing to close, one of those error report ones. The first time I didn't bother telling it to send. However, afterwards the taskbar disappeared and ctrl+alt+del didn't do anything. I had to reboot manually, and then it was fine for a while until having another win32 error report, which I sent, and after which my sound failed to work for certain things. My winamp had an error about missing something and wouldn't play, and a youtube video's sound wouldn't play. I didn't have to shut it down manually this time, and the shutdown sound worked. The sound worked again afterward, but I tried virus scanning with Avira and it stopped on svchost.exe.mdmp at 22.1%, and it only found a java/openconnect.l for a ?detection?. I tried getting the task manager, and when I tried ctrl+alt+del and clicked it, it not only didn't give me the task manager at all but it took my taskbar, and then nothing else would work when clicked. I rebooted again and tried running MalwareBytes, and then after a couple minutes the screen went black and then turned blue, and had this:... Read more

Hi everyone,
This morning I turned on my PC (Windows 7 x64) and I get this blue screen error STOP:c000021a [FATAL SYSTEM ERROR].
I can't even get passed the starting windows screen it just keeps on rebooting then getting blue screen again. I've tried safe mode and last known configuration point. Both just give me blue screen after the drivers are loaded. Haven't installed anything new recently so I don't know what the cause of this problem could be. I apparently have no system restore points even though Norton would make them every scan. I can get to command prompt and that is the only thing I can get to. Is there a way I can fix this through command prompt. I think I've attached the screen it gives me and that's all I know.
Thanks!

Does these freezes appear when doing something specific on your machine?
Have you updated your drivers lately?

Try going to cmd (press start-orb and search 'cmd') and type this message and notice any outdated drivers:

I have been battling a virus(es) on my desktop for the past couple weeks. Yesterday, I downloaded and ran Spybot in safe mode. It listed 7 problems and I chose "fix selected". Spybot fixed 5 of the 7 and then prompted me to reboot to fix the other 2. Admittedly, I was brain-faded so I didn't look closely at what file names or paths it was trying to fix. Since that particular reboot, I have not been able to load windows since; fyi, I am running XP Pro. When I powerup, the computer flashes the Windows XP logo and then ultimately gives me the following message (before prompting me for login info): Fatal System Error c00021a. windows logon process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000). The system has been shut down.

At this point, I'm not sure if I have a virus problem that has escalated, causing this fatal error, or a completely different problem. I'll give a bit of a background, since it may be relevent. I run Malware Antibyte scans and Advanced System Care (ASC) scans weekly to clean up any issues, but lately the problems would reappear just hours after running the scan. So, a couple of days ago, I downloaded Avast 5 and completed a scan. I also downloaded a freeware called Teamviewer at that time, although i don't think that is part of the problem, despite the timing. Yesterday morning, when booting up the computer in normal mode, I was unable to see any desktop icons or taskbar, I only could see... Read more

sub-forum: guides & solved issues

The above forum has information on how to use Recovery Console & Windows XP CD to restore the OS. Caution, I recommend full backup to a 2nd disk. Caution, don't enter 'r' to the first decision point. Caution: next decision made should not reformat the partition. If you have the ability to clone the hard drive, then you have a spare should recovery be re-done.

Other posts recommend configuring computer to a minimum: the boot hard drive, cdrom, and 1 memory module (256MB is the minimum for XP). This is an easier first step before reloading anything.

Caution: oem restore bombs you back to out-of-the-box conditions. All data & applications are overwritten. This is different from above restore.

You did not indicate what significant changes occurred preceding the problem. Is the hard drive entering old age? Was the disk re-partitioned? Were applications closing/freezing in the days leading up to this?

I'm Running a Pentium 4 with XP Pro, my computer cant find two Western Digital Hard Drives, one a 250 GB (WD2500JB) and the other a 80 GB I use both as back up and most of the time I have I them unpluged from the IDE port, the 250 GB is like a year old and the 80 is like 6 month old.

I have try it making it my primary slave, secondary slave, secondary master and always the same result, every time I turn on my pc I heard the hard drive making a clicking sound and then a message on a black screen saying something like "Primary Slave has a Fatal Error" and the only choice it give me is to restart my system.

I have important data on both hard drive and I wish I could save it, any idea if there is a way to fix these hard drive and what the clicking noise is all about? It sound like is trying to read the drive or something.

I was thinking as a ultimate option to buy another 250 GB and a 80 GB open both of them and changing the disk from the bad hard drive to the new one to see if I could read my data, just in case that the problem is not with the physical disc that store the data inside the hard drive.

Thanks

Alex

so do either of these drives have an OS on it / them ?
im a bit confused about this .. you have them for backing up only and you have another drive with the OS on it and then u use these to back up important data ?
and as for the clicking sound . i wouldnt try using that hadr drive since you may damage it even more if you persist on trying to access it .
clicking SOUNDS VERY bad ...

Hi mrm0rgan -There should not be a reason to put the .exe in these areas - Just a Right click on the item in Programs (or My Documents) and place a Shortcut on the desktop is enough -You do not need the .exe there - If you do want it there then download the program to Desktop only and take/play it from there -I also have 2 Popcap games (including Bejeweled2 Deluxe) in My Docs and just a shortcut on the Desktop -Thank You -EDITED for spelling -

Sometimes (too often) when I do a web search, and then back out of a website to my search list, I get a "fatal error" message and I have to get completely out of I-net Explorer altogether. This process has grown very tiresome. I'd appreciate any answers you might have that lead to a solution of this problem.

A:Fatal error

My IE also crashes sometimes, usually because of some demanding javascript code. Try to update your IE to the most current version and if it still doesn't help use Opera or Mozilla for your searches. They both have nice features to restrict javascript code and dont even ask about installing Active-X which makes surfing to unknown websites much safer and easier.

What were you doing when these errors came up?

Blue screens are sorta weird. 90% of the time they're ignorable and only require a reboot-and-forget. But sometimes they're also pretty definite indications of a bigger problem.

Hey tech guy!

You helped us once before and we are hoping you can help us again. we have a dell computer and are using windows xp and recently when we signed on, our desk top disappeared and was replaced by a generic warning screen saying that our computer's security was at risk. it offered a link to scan our computer but we ignored that - fearing it would futher infect us and scanned our system using super antispyware. the first time it "removed" 139 threats and we have since ran the scan three or four more times. as of this morning we are still completely unable to navigate our computer. it is currently off line and i am using a lap top to contact you.

Although the trojan.fake drop threats have been temporaily removed we are getting BatCO and Adware/80 solutions surf assistant.

Hey my name is Erwin and I have a little problem with XP.

I recently bought a new laptop, a Dell Vostro 1720.
This laptop came with windows vista pre installed, but I'm not really fond of vista so I reformatted my partitions and installed windows XP instead (SP2).

However after Installing Xp some problems occured. Somethimes my laptop gave me a fatal error:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows SubSystem system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x75e91a76 0x00c7f5dc)
The system has been shut down.Click to expand...

I thought this had something to do with me not having all drivers installed. So I restarted installed all drivers and the problems seemed fixxed. after this I installed MCafee and Firefox and turned of my laptop.

This all happened yesterday, after having installed all drivers I got one more fatal system error however after restarting everything seemed fine.
Even today when I started up my laptop everything went smooth. I installed 7zip and after this I installed Photoshop CS4.

After the installation I tried to run photoshop and I got the fatal system error again. Now each time I startup my computer this error occurs a few seconds after starting up. I can start up in Safe mode normally.

I hope anyone can help me with this problem.

Thanks in advance.

When we do click OK we get the Juno program, but when clicking on "Get Mail" we get a Runtime error with no code. If we select the Browser tab we also get a Runtime error. The program just will not access the Internet. MS Internet Explorer works okay.

We have reverted back to an earlier restore date for Windows 7, have uninstalled/reinstalled Juno, copied two complete earlier Juno Folders (Program & Data) and all to no avail. Juno techies are at a loss so we are at a stand still. Does anyone have an idea as to what we might do next within WIndows 7 to fix our problem?

Thanks a bunch, Uncle Dewey

Hello and Welcome to TSF

If you can boot it up and connect to the internet follow these instructions'

Scan your pc with one of these free online scanners:
Panda ActiveScan
RAV AntiVirus
Housecall. Be sure to put a check the box beside AutoClean.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Download / Install / Update / and Run:
Adaware SE check for any updates before running it.
Get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. You can download it at this SITE
To run this tool, install to the hard drive, then open Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection.

Download and install Spybot S&D . Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.

If you are unable to boot the system at all, slaving the drive on another pc and scanning the drive... Read more

That is a "Memory Management" Issue these are associated with Hardware Failures/Faults. Try starting off by running Memtest86.

Memtest86 Instructions
Download the pre-built version of Memtest86 (Link Below) and burn it onto a CD using ISO Recorder (Link Below) after this boot off the CD and start the test going and let it run for 3-5 hours (Minimum of 7 Passes) or Overnight which is best.

Memtest86 - http://www.memtest.org/
ISO Recorder - http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm

And Also Run Prime95 on all 3 tests, "Small FFT's", "Large FFT's" and "Blend". This will detect errors in minutes and automatically stop the program if it finds any. Post back once you have done these and tell me if there are any errors.

Prime95 - This corresponds to your OS which version it is 32bit or 64bit
32bit OS Version - http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=103
64bit OS Version - http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=205

Hi, welcome to TSF!

You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:
AVG7
Norton

Disable one of your Anti Virus programs.

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

There are basically two types of these programs:
On-Access and On-Demand

On-Access Scanners
As the name implies, it runs in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running. The main function of an on-access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine.

On-Demand Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to.
Such as:
Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine.

Please disable one or the other so they do not conflict.

Hi
I apologise in advance for being a bit vague. This happened some months ago while I was abroad and a lot was going on at the time.
I was using an old computer running Windows XP when for no apparent reason I got a blue screen telling me of a fatal error and that the physical memory was being dumped, acounter showed the percentage being dumped and when 100% was reached the computer switched itself off. Amongst the various messages on this screen was one saying that if this was the first time I had seen the message to try restarting the computer.
I tried restarting and some time later the same thing happened again.
My problem:- where is the fatal error likely to be? Is it the operating system or is Windows simply responding to a hardware fault.
As I said this is an old computer and I wondered if a failing motherboard battery would cause this or perhaps a partial RAM failure.
I have another identical motherboard from which I can take all parts which might be needed or if it is the operating system I have all the necessary disks, I am hoping that someone out there can advise where to start as I still do not have much time available for trial and error methods
Regards
phil

A:Fatal Error

When there is no idea what is causing the problem and time is short, one decisive method is to reinstall the OS and device drivers from scratch (or OEM partition or discs). If the problem goes away, it was software, if not, its almost certainly some hardware failure or conflict.

Here are 3 different ways to do it

If you can`t get into XP post back and we can try another method

Then try to solve the problem
Did the error message give any more information?

Did you make sure that there was no malware at all on the system before installing SP2?

Was your system running problem free before the installation?

I think my Windows might be toast. I got some sort of virus and now none of my Windows icons (my computer, recycle bin....etc) opertae properly, I cannot open any folders, programs crash at startup. Icons have changed and system restore opens but to a blank white window. I cannot run a restore or anything. I am using Win XP home.

If this is reversible I would like to work through it. I do have an option of running an "out of the box" functionality restore which would save things I made with certain programs but not the programs themselves.

I can post a hijack this log later if it applies. Am I dead in the water or can you guys help me out? Thanks!

"Fatal error" in this message box it says " an error as been encounter that prevents Setup from continuing Windows could not be updated. To this address this problem Windows must shut down Press Ok to veiw the setup log" When Ok is pressed another box appears called System Setup Log-(C:\WINDOWS\setuperr.log) this message appears on screen along with a number of other missing dll files. Then in the same box it said
Setup detected that the system file name (c:\windows\system32\ole32.dll)is not signed properly by Mircosoft. This file could not be restored to the correct Mircosoft version. Use the SFC utility to verify the integity of file. When close is pressed the machine closes down completely This only happened since I try to run Restore to speed up the computer for my children. Can you write exactly what the error message says? When does the error occur: Is it when you boot into Windows? When you shutdown? When you run a specific program? What do you mean by "it just keeps closing down"? What closes down?

to TSF,

Run this HP diagnostic tool for information about your issue.

Regarding you RAM upgrade, run this scan at Crucial.com to make sure you have the correct memory installed on you Laptop.

For an overall look with very detailed information about your system download and review using Belarc Advisor. There is sensitive and private information within the Belarc scan result which you should not post here, it is just for your information, however tell us about your display/Video installed and make sure your Windows Updates show currently up to date.

Following the above suggestions will start you off with troubleshooting your issue.
