Data disc accident

Q: Data disc accident

I made a data disc (CD-R) with nero 5.5 (size of data 400mb) and accidently my daughter did another burn (size of data 2mb) on the same disc, her data is there, have I lost mine completely? I seem to recall reading somewhere that there is a program for retrieving the older data?

I'm not sure how to do this.

So when the disc is in, I can quickly open the playlists on the disc that will play the flacs from the disc.

A:WMP playlists burnt on data disc, playing FLACs on the data disc?

Before you try to play FLACs on WMP I would first ask if you've installed a plugin that'll make it possible? WMP can't normally play FLACs. I've never done it so I can't recommend one but there are supposed to be several free ones available online. Also, the playlist has to be in a format WMP can recognize. If it's not, create a new playlist form the files on your disk in WMP and burn it to your disk. Once those prerequisites are in place, if you still need help we can discuss opening the playlist and playing the files.

My PC was working fine. Then I got Antispyware Soft or some crap like that. It blocked all .exe files so my first move was to boot in to safe mode and do a little cleaning with task manager and regedit.

I restarted my PC and it hanged on Verifying DMI Pool Data. I tried everything. I removed all peripherals, then all memory modules (except one), then I removed that one and put one of the others inside, then removed all PCI cards, then removed hard drives... Nothing helped. Then I went to Nvidia Raid setup thinking that something happened there and I cleared MBR by accident.

Now I am freaking out! I don't know what to do. I managed to boot in to windows 7 from other computer's HDD (it worked flawlessly) and only thing I saw was 2TB of data that is unallocated.

I have no idea how to fix this.

I am on the verge of shooting myself. I have more than 6 years of graphic design there.

Please. Help.

You can try using recovery software to get the data back. Depending on how badly you messed up, it may not work but it's worth a shot.

Hello Everyone,

Here is the problem where I messed up and help me please,

I had problem with my Asus notebook for black screen after login and I was not able to resolve the issue.

1. So I decided to to format my "C: drive" and was trying to install windows 7 on my windows 7 laptop GPT partition (UEFI) and when it didn't allow me to install win7 on partitioned drive.

2. I followed YouTube video foolishly. So I selected my notebook "C drive", which is disk 0 and then, I thought that I have selected my "C drive partition".

3. I executed diskpart clean command ( without any parameters, not clean all. ONLY CLEAN) :'(
everything gone after that.

4. Then I saw my all partitions are gone and this is what i want to recover. (i had 2 partitions, C drive- 250 gb space, D drive- 400 gb space) and I had important data in "D drive(around 100 gb)".

5. And after diskpart clean command , I see that my C and D drive partitions got merged as one single partition.

6. I was in panic, then I was able install Win 7 with intentions to recover data from "D drive" and planning to recover my lost data.

How do I recover my data(D Drive importantly) ? .. Please assist me .. your help will most helpful .. I am worried..

Oh and there is my little ditty too
Make a bootable Ubuntu disk
Set the BIOS to boot from the optical when the machine boots it will show you a screen with TRY or INSTALL > select TRY not INSTALL
When it is finished - it takes very little time you will get a screen like in the pic .
Open the drive you want > User and dig down until you get to the data / settings you may be able to copy / paste the material you want to an external source or other installed drive doing this.
I am not sure if it will but I have recovered tons of data etc using this method both on "dead" or just plain drives that you cannot get data from using Windows.

Hello, I know it's stupid but i diskpart/clean and formatted while installing windows from cmd, it's a new laptop so i had no other data just (i don't remember exactly) 100GB not more. i installed windows on that formatted disk.
I had all data on D Disk (500GB) and now i have only one disk which is 1TB and no partition recovery programs found the data I needed, I tried recover my files, iCare data recovery, Stellar Phoenix and MiniTool Partition Wizard , none of them showed me my lost disk and data
do you have any idea what other things can i do ? please help this is really important most data is pictures and videos which i don't have anywhere else

A:diskpart / clean, format by accident , need to recover data

Sounds like you have one Disk , but used to have two partitions?

If your data was on a second partition ( the second half of the disk ) you may be able to get it back.

To do that you need to recover the original partition structure. Try the partition recovery on Partition wizard free boot disc.

If you already tried that, you are probably out of luck, although partition guru free is excellent for that kind of thing. It is a bit confusing, it does both partition recovery and data recovery. Data recovery on the free version is limited - suggest you do partition recovery.

Partition Wizard Bootable CD allows user to manage partition directly with partition manager bootable CD.

Windows ME Computer has a CD-ROM in it, which shoud be able to read data from a disc. If I put in a data disc and go to my computer, it shows the D drive with the little disc and music notes by the disc. When you doubleclick it to open the CD it takes you right to windows media player. No matter what you do it always opens windows media player. I am helping a co worker of my wife with this computer. They must have had it working at one time cause they have games in the computer that probabaly came from discs. anyway, why does it bring up windows media all the time, why does it show the musical notes beside the disc in my computer? how can I get it to read a data disc? I removed her CD-ROM and hooked up an old burner I had and it installed and worked right away. I went to mycomputer and it showed the D drive with the disc but this time without the musical notes, I doubleclicked it and it brought up the data on the disc I had in right away with no problem. So, my question is, I will have to take my CD-Burner out of her computer and put hers back in. How can I get hers to see a data disc and not just a music disc? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I am hoping to burn some films(avi) to disc and was hoping you could advise me as to the best way to do this. I can either convert them and burn them as dvd or just put them on as a data disc. What I am not sure about is which is the best way so as to keep the original quality. Thank You Leapy.

A:which is best dvd or data disc

Keep them as AVI on your DVD disc instead and use data disc option to burn them. Much faster and convenient unless there are chances you would watch some on your DVD player in the future.

i have a dvd +rw disc. i burned it using roxio software... i know, first mistake... it was on an xp system. i got a new vista computer and now i can't view any of the movies on it.. i have .wmv .avi and .mpg files on the disc. when i put it in the drive it shows that the movies are there. showes titles, file sizes. shows the disc is holding 4gb of data.

when i click on a file and try to play it says disc error, cannot read from disc--that typical crap message...

same message when i try to copy the files to the hard drive.

i have tried isobuster and cdroller with a bit of success getting a couple files off the disc.

is there any way to copy the disc including all bad sectors if that indeed is the problem? maybe it will work better reading directly off the hard drive??

any ideas anyone has would be wonderful.. i can't replace these movies.. i'd even consider a commercial recovery company if anyone can recommend an affordable one

I have a problem with my CD writer where it will only read music CD?s, if I try to load a CD with data on it i.e. a programme file or JPEG photos it causes the PC to lock up and can only be restored by turning off the power.
The drive activates and the light flashes, the drive speeds up, the light goes off and the mouse and keyboard are frozen, even the clock stops.
I can eject and reinsert the CD but this has no effect.

I had initially put this down to a fault with my CD writer but I purchased a DVD writer last month and when I installed it I was surprised to find that it has exactly the same fault as the CD writer.

The DVD writer came with Nero and Cyberlink and it took me numerous attempts to get this loaded as it would keep locking up when loading the disc.

I have managed to write a DVD slideshow with the new drive however if I put the disc back in the PC will lock. Again it will run music CD?s perfectly but not anything that seems to have data on it.

I have cleaned up the PC by deleting temp files, removing unused programmes, defragmented the disc, ran scan disc, changed msconfig to reduce background programmes, ran Adaware software, and ran Registry first aid software, all of which have no difference.

I have also deleted the CD and DVD drivers and reinstalled again with improvement.

Interestingly if I change autostart preferences to ?take no action? the PC locks when I put a music CD in as well. Also If I set photos?s to open with explorer ... Read more

Welcome to Techspot !
Writer's can be very frustrating ,you need patience to succeed with them.
I would start by telling you , that you need to do some trouble shooting and then post back with the results.
I recommend that you make the DVD drive the Master on that channel(If it is newer it might be faster, but for sure DVD 's are more sensitive )
Then turn off Auto start in Windows.
Turn on DMA for the drives that can use it .
Check the Info Tool in Nero and make sure you have a green light for your system and nero ASPI drivers.
Make sure Windows cd writing capability is disabled.
Update the" Firmware " for both drives.
Cleanly remove all Authoring ,packetwriting software , except Nero.
Then download and update Nero to ver 6.6..
Have fun and Good luck.
Let us know how it works.

Hey, I want to first of all say that I'm new to these forum things - Not used to them, but I really REALLY need help!

Barely 5-6 months ago I bought a brand new Acer Aspire 5516 labtop (Yeah, I know, they kinda suck, but it wasn't for gaming). I don't think the specs matter, but it was running Windows Vista Basic.

Aiight, now here's the problem. I had a disc from my old computer, with all my miscellaneous files - Y'know, Avast! keys, and other programs, etc. It had around 249$ of software on it, which is alot to a kid like me (I work for that stuff - 8$ an hour peoples!)

So, I put the disc into my labtop, and waited for it to boot up...Wow...It SAYS that there's "3100 (or so) GB used, 452 free"...

I click to open up the D: drive, and when I access the disk, there's nothing on there! Seriously, and this is the second time!!

I can't access programs? Or does it delete them? If so, this is insane. I also had a free small games and whatnots on the disc...So why? Damnit, WHY!? The files don't show up on my old PC, and it says the same thing.

As I said, this is the second disc that it does, and I'm afraid to stick anything onto this stupid machine! Why, why, why!?

Please reply with post-haste!!! I'm really really upset >.<!

Hi all,

I must find a solution to this problem. I'll try and explain as best I can.

I had a PS3 with a 320GB HD inside - my PS3 broke and I need to get the data off this disc. It contains video of my new baby girl and photos that are very important to me.

So - I bought a 2.5inch SATA external HD enclosure, fixed the HD inside and plugged into my PC thinking I could just copy the data across. But my PC will not recognise the drive. I think I need to format the drive before it is recognised but obviously that isn't an option.

Can somebody please help me out here?

Hello. Last night i recorded our acoustic set and was going to make a demo of it using a Sony HI-MD MZ-NH1. So when i got home i listened to the whole 1.5 hours and put in track markings as they were appropriate. Well, today when i go to transfer them to my computer Track 9 wouldn't go, and on the mini-disc it said "can'tPLAY." Our music is highly improvisational and that was the song i wrote and i feel like i've really lost something special, so any help on how to retreive this track would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and have a nice day.

I have a huge project contained on a dvd. I formatted it to work like a USB flash drive, using windows explorer. I stupidly didn't back up the most recent saves of the files I had moved to the disc, and forgot to finalize the disc before ejecting it. Now, I am unable to access the data placed on the disc. I opened it up in isobuster and immediately saw all my files, intact, on the disc. I checked with isobuster to be sure they weren't corrupted and were readeable, and it said they were. However, when I tried to export the files to an apporpriate folder on my HDD, it only took a split second to transfer 2.25 GB of data from the disc to the folder. Except, when I went to the folder, it wasn't there. So, Isobuster will say the files are intact and can be extracted, and it will say it extracted them to the designated folder. They aren't hidden, I have viewing hidden files and folders enabled. I then tried converting the disc to an iso, and extract the iso with 7zip to get the data. But 7zip was unable to unzip it. I tried to mount the iso on another disc, but that disc didn't contain the files either, even in Isobuster. If there is any way I can fix my disc in windows explorer or Isobuster, I really need to know as soon as possible.

A:Unfinalized Data Disc Can't Be Read

Whatever burning software you used to create the DVD, use that same software to write something else to that DVD (any files, it doesn't matter what they are), but before burning them make sure you choose the option to "Finalize" so nothing else can be written to it.

Everything that's been burned to that disc should then be visible & accessible in Windows Explorer.

I found a disc that I have my honeymoon pictures save on (ONLY COPIES!). A while back I had to reformat my old PC and my CDRW was not working properly so i thought these pics were long gone. Wife was mad to say the least.

Last night i found the disc and it opened on my IBM Thinkpad Laptop so I was excited to find this. After I found the disc i wrote on the top side of the disc with a permanent marker "honeymoon pics".

Now the disc is not showing any data when I put the disc in any of my 3 computers. One says the data may be corrupt.

When i go through the XP wizards when i first put a disc into my IBM Thinkpad, I selected "Add FIles" using SONIC which is the software that came on this i suppose to create CD's. When I go this route I can actually see the file with all the JPEG's on the file but of course can not open them or copy them so I know the data is physically still on there.

Can anyone please help or have any suggestions. As anyone can imagine these pictures are very important.

I would try dvd+r

You may have discs labelled and packaged the same but they may be from different batches or manufacturers, dvd+r is the more recent technology. Also you could check if "InCD" is running on your system. This is a Nero software known for causing havoc.

Hi, I'm having problems with my DVD data back-up discs. I burned three discs on my brand new DVD burner and they won't copy files properly off the disk back on my hard drive. It will copy some, then stall and the disc whirrs away. It will sometimes come up with a crc error. I can view, listen to, etc all files though and even do a save as on the files that it specifically would come up with an error message with. I recently reformatted my hard drive and only then noticed that the copy function doesn't work properly, so unfortunately I can't say that it was properly working before the reformat. I would only verify the disc by seeing if i could view the files on another DVD drive.
I tried looking for a driver on the Lite-on website but it just says that it uses a default windows driver. I also re-installed some software that came with the burner.
Can i still recover this data possibly?

Have you tried copying off the files on another drive or computer? Any scrathes on smudges on the disc?

To prevent this issue inthe future try some of the following:

You may wish to try updating the firmware of the drive: rw.asp?Flag=1&Item=DR8US0Q&Model=SHOW-812S
Sometimes its just a problem with certain media.

You should also consider installing the latest chipset/IDE drivers for your VIA chipset:
(Via Hyperion 4-in-1 Version 4.55)

Also try updating your CD burning software. For example Nero puts out software patches to fix issues with certain drives or update the CD burning engine.

A:Unable to erase all data on burned CD-R disc

Yes, you are correct. If the data is sensitive then snap the disk into small pieces or score the 'label' side to make it unreadable.CD-R (& CD+R) disks are designed to be written to once and, as such, are a good way of keeping a (relatively) permanent copy of data but they are no good for use as a 'use many times' medium, for that you need the ones with 'rw' at the end (for 're-writable'). The same goes for DVD and Bluray disks."I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us..." Pink Floyd

Hello @iannis? Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. Welcome! I'm sorry about the issues you experience. You can see an example of the recovery media creation and generally it informs the user the device will be formatted which means all data will be lost. This is necessary everytime one creates bootable media. Generally speaking it is not recommended to use such a bug drive for recovery partition. I have never come across a case where it didn't somehow inform the user that USB device needs formatting. I am afraid that if the HDD has been formatted and overwritten there is no way for you to recover your data. There are a few programs that promise recovery but it is highly unlikely to work. Please, clarify your problem re. the HDD at the moment : 1) Windows recognises only 33 GB of the drive but not anymore - e.g. 33 taken out of 33 total, 0 freeor2) Windows sees about 33 GB taken out of 1 TB

I have several large files I would like to save to disc to free up storage. Also I would like to make emergency back-ups of games in case the original discs are damaged, lost, etc. I only have a CD-RW drive so, my question is: Can I only use CD-Rs/CD-RWs to save? I'd prefer to save them on DVDs because of the large amount of storage space and I've heard they will not deteriorate as fast as a CD.

A:Saving large amounts of data, etc. to disc

If you have only a CD drive then you may only use cd media.
I suggest that you get a copy of Norton Ghost.
Norton Ghost will allow you to backup your files or the whole disk drive.

I get the following message just as it's almost finished copying to my computer:

Cannot copy [filename here]: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

Now, I really hope I can somehow get this resolved, because the file is only 700MB of 4.7GB on 8 discs, and I really don't want to have to re-download the program...

A:Error when copying from burned data disc

Yikes ... try cleaning the disk :-X This problem is usually caused by a scratched or damaged disk. Use a little bit of water and hand soap ... believe it or not, the safest thing for a CD. Better than that, if you have some lens tissue or the cloth you use for cleaning glasses, try that out.

Worst case scenario, you can buy a "Disk Doctor" if that doesn't work and the CD is really important to you.

Have you tried this CD on another drive? Sometimes that can magically do it.

I'm having troubles with two disc drives I installed into my computer....

I currently have 2 plugged into my computer (Both internal). One is a CD drive, and the other a DVD.

Now, at first I had two CD drives installed and they worked fine, however I needed my computer to read DVD's also... So I removed one of my CD drives and installed a DVD drive. They both have power to them, however my computer doesn't seem to be able to communicate with them in a sense of transferring data. It doesn't even recognize the original CD drive that I had installed. I don't receive errors, they are simply non-responsive.

Help would be much appreciated,

A:Power to disc drives, but no data reading

Are the drives IDE or SATA? If they are IDE you need to make sure the jumpers are set to MASTER and SLAVE or if you have a CS cable then the jumpers on both drives are set to CS.

If they are SATA there are no jumpers to set.

My problem is my dvd-rom shows every disc as a writeble CD with all 702 MB space free. I haven't tried any DVD but this has happened with every CD I used. And also when I used a new writeable CD to burn some data on it , it didn't work. I use Roxio Burn software. My husband has just bought an Acer laptop running XP with an NTI CD & DVD-Maker (Gold) in it. Since I'm the supposed techy in this area, it's my job to understand how to operate it & then teach him. I've read through the 'Help' section and think I get most of it but am really stumped when it comes to which file system to use. I've never run into this before and the choices are:ISO 9600 standard level1; MS-DOS file names;Joliet; Romeo and UDF. We use the drive mainly to back up our word documents so does anyone know which is the best one to use?

A:Which file system to use when saving data to disc

ISO 9600 - Joliet or Romeo... Joliet stores file names up to characters, with trucated names for Dos.. Romeo stores up to 128 characters. People stick with Joliet for compatability.

UDF is for packet writing, which may be convienient, but is a dangerous way to store things on disks. If something goes wrong during writing, generally all the data gets lost. Also, you'll find some systems won't be able to read the disks. Besides, CDR's are cheap enough..

By the way, you're probably better off using a flash drive and forgetting about burning disks if it's just word documents.

Hi, please help.

The computer is an HP a6400f, Windows Vista service pack 2
with a Western Digital WD5000 AAKS-65A7B0 drive.

Last year I started having problems with the wd5000 hard drive. I would get error messages and at startup the computer would show that it was scanning the files. I realized that maybe the drive was dying, so I figured out how to clone it to a new 1TB drive. Things had been ok with the new 1TB drive until last month. My dad had trouble with it and didn't tell me until windows would not even load anymore. I was heartbroken. I know I should have saved everything to some discs when I had the chance. Anyway, I used another computer to download a vista repair program, made a CD, and used the cd on the a6400f, but it didn't seem to work.

So since the new drive seemed dead, I had the idea to use the original hard drive I had cloned from (wd5000), and try to repair it and clone it again. So I plugged in the original drive, used the vista repair disc, and thankfully it was working even though it still says biohd-8 in the smart test. I was hopeful because the desktop would load, but the problem was that it would take forever to load. Yesterday I decided to wait however long it would take until the spinning cursor would go away and see if I could click on programs. It took a long time and everything was slow, but I was able to access the msconfig and check off some startups and services. Then I read online about chkdsk /r. So I tried that and when I s... A:How can I recover data from hard drive after using repair disc?

Hi and welcome,
You may be able to recover some files using testdisk (free and legal) but it depends how over-written they are. Guide here: inc how to run from within Windows.

In the meantime, use those drives as little as possible to improve chances of recovery.
You could try using a Linux o/s called Ubuntu to try to rescue files off the dead drive. Guide here the version of Ubuntu has changed so some screenshots may look different, but the method still works.

Hope this helps?

I have Windows 98, and Real Player v10

I used to have a lot of media files on my harddrive, so to save space, I burned them all to a data disk. This is about a year or more ago. I've since watched them, from the disk, on Real Player.

Then I upgraded to RealPlayer 10 and wishing for SO many reason now that I hadn't. They now no longer play. I double click, Real Player starts, and then... it completely freezes. Completely. I have to ctrl+alt+del to stop Real Player before I can even use the rest of the computer. I've tried to play RM and RAM files from my hard drive, and those work.

I thought maybe if I could get them off of the CD I could play them, but it won't let me copy them to my hard disk.

What the heck can I do to play these files? I mean, there's a lot of them, and I'd love to be able to watch them.

And if nothing, can someone tell me how to get them off my CD and back onto the hard drive?

OK. I've tried 3 times and wasted 3 CD-R's. I'm trying, with Nero, to burn a data CD: just a bunch of jpg's and freeware. I've read that Burn4Free (the 1.0 release, as I've heard the others contain spyware) can cause conflicts, so I uninstalled Burn4Free. I check the box for "verify written data" in Nero; But I still get an error message after trying to Add/Remove programs through Windoze. (Sorry to make this so long) I just inserted the Data Cd I tried to burn. "Windows can perform the same action each time u insert a disk or connect a device with this kind of file." Pictures. I select "take no action". Fast forward to "Windows cannot find the installation program..." I can Browse for the install program, but I don't have the slightest idea where to look. Any ideas? Working on a spiffy e-machine with Windows Vista Home Basic that runs pretty well.

After reading multiple posts where the advice usually begins with suggesting a 'boot disc' or a 'recovery disc', I guess what I'm looking to find out is:
1) what is the difference between a boot disc and a recovery disc?
2) How do I go about making one on this machine (or if I even can)? << I did read through Grinler's tutorials regarding System Restore points and all that seems to in good order. But I guess I'm not sure on the relationship between that and my post (or if there even is one).
3) a best practice regarding these type of discs
I don't have any pressing issues at this time, but I also don't want to wait until I do.

Everything I've learned here at BC has been so great & helpful, I would like to stay on that path, so any links/apps/ideas/suggestions and/or insights would be greatly appreciated.

A:Boot Disc, Recovery Disc, Frisbee Disc

1) what is the difference between a boot disc and a recovery disc?Boot disk vs recovery disk. Let me see if I can phrase that in a way that makes some sense.A recovery disc is a generic term for the disk or media containing a backup of the original factory condition or a specified condition of a computer as configured by the original equipment manufacturer or an end-user. OEM supplied recovery media is sometimes shipped with some computers to allow the user to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the operating system and pre-loaded software as it was when it was shipped. This is not as common a practice today as it was in the past. I won't confuse the issue, but google recovery partition for more information.A boot disk is a removable data storage medium, i.e. DVD or flash drive from which a computer can load and run 'boot' an operating system or utility program. The computer must have an installed program or application which will load and execute a program or application from the boot disk. This will enable you to boot an otherwise unusable machine to be able to troubleshoot the OS or non-working application as necessary.Hope that gives you a better idea of the difference. As to how to create a boot disk? I will let more knowledgeable staff or members assist you.

Being an XP user and knowing XP doesn't use DOS, I thought there was no chance of getting them back; I just found out I was wrong and with the proper tools I can. Windows says, "word cannot find compressor for..." I'm clueless here. Cant do anything on computer
using a different laptop right now

I was in regedit trying to delete an instant savings app that had found its way into my computer. I believe i was in Local_Users and i know i went to the software folder. I accidentally deleted the software folder and I couldnt use any programs. I couldnt use a system restore because it gave me an error so i decided to reboot and go into safe mode and do it there but it didnt work. I have been trying to figure all of this out with windows technicians and didnt get anywhere. I cant do anything on my broken computer because when i boot it up, it skips the boot menu and i cant get it into safe mode or anything. it goes straight to the lock screen and I cant read any texts and can only put in my password. After I put in the password, it gives me a black screen for a few seconds with a blue spinning wheel on my mouse and it goes back to the lock screen. My idea was to load the cd I have with the win8 pro back onto my computer and that would reset the registry but I dont know how to do this because I cant do any functions on my pc at the moment. any help would be great. Sorry for all the bad writing, I am trying to finish a lot of homework and figure out this problem at the same time.

I'm not pc savvy at all so this message comes with a tad bit of panic!

My mother accidently hit "log off" instead of restart using windows XP. Now she gets a blue screen that says "Welcome" on the left and my family's name with a chess board icon on the right. There's a button on the bottom that says "turn off family computer". We cannot get to the desk top no matter what we try. We can only shut it down. We think she hit log off-- since it's a family computer we never use this function. Can anyone tell me how to get back to the desktop? (she's quite upset because we're not sure what happened exactly, and not sure what to do)

ANY help or suggests are welcome! Thanks much!

Welcome to TSF.

That's not good. That's the main reason we tell users not to use this program on their own since it can cause damage. Do you have an older log of what you had before you did the fixes? If not, tell us what you fixed if you can remember.

Post your new log you have now and we'll take a look at it. What firewall program are you using?

When I was reformatting my computer i deleted a part of my drive that i think was really important. It was drive E:. After the reformatting I tried to go on the internet. I tried to go on wireless but, I didn't have a wireless internet icon for my wireless card so I plugged it in. Still i could not go on the Internet. Then I tried to open some programs and half of them would load the others I would get error reports from.
I think the reason it doesn't work is because of the drive I accidently deleted. Is there any way that I could get the data back without taking it to a repair shop? Thanks for any help. Oh and I cant put my laptop on standby either.

I'm using windows XP and in network connections I accidently deleted my lan connection icon. (I know that sounds goofy) Then the recycle bin got emptied before I could restore it Since I am using DSL I obviously need this, but it will not even detect the hardware to make a new connection. I've spent hours trying to figure this out, and read everything about LAN in the microsoft help and support.
please help!

Hello-I have a windows xp (version 2002) Asus EeePC and I think I might have downloaded a virus accidentally whilst on a music radio website. I found that it messed up my internet browser and it would directly open to a website called "" Please advise what I should do to clean this up! I have changed the default from the wierd website to "" but it still will default to this website "partner12..." if the domain name does not exist. i used to have norton antivirus but the subscription ran out and i did not renew...I know I should probably get something to protect my computer as well from now on. Thank you

Hello, I recently purchased Dell XPS 8700 that came with a 2tb harddive formatted with GPT. The computer came with Windows 8, and I wanted to downgrade to Windows 7. However the windows installer wouldn't install on any of the current partitions, so I deleted every partition with gParted and proceeded to install Windows 7 successfully onto the one giant partition. Since I deleted all the GPT partition information (Idiotically), I am unable to make more partitions and dual boot.

So my questions are: Is my harddrive as of right now in MBR or GPT? And how would I add the GPT partitions back, as in the primary and secondary GPT headers?

Edit: I am attempting to dual boot with Xubuntu 14.04 and Windows 7 Professional, both 64bit and the computer has the UEFI, I think. Am I better off using MBR or GPT to dual boot? I only want two OS's and a shared data partition.

A:Deleted all the GPT Partitions by accident

Since I deleted all the GPT partition information (Idiotically), I am unable to make more partitions and dual boot.

Deleting all GPT partitions is a recommended step to downgrade "Windows 8" as "Windows 7" is known to not much liking GPT based UEFI boot mode. Although "Win 7" 64 bit edition may boot from a GPT disk, i prefer MBR partitioning especially in case of dual booting with Linux. The only mistake you made here is not to partition the disk at the time of install. Fortunately you can split the single large "C" partition to two or three small partitions with the help of "Partition Wizard" free edition.
Download link : Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition.
What you need to do is first shrink/resize "C" and create one or more new partitions using the free space.

Hello I'm not very clued up in VBA and tend to record macros and then tweak them. Today I used Ctrl-Break to stop a macro, but must have done something else accidentally as I have lost my VBA menus entirely. When I right-click the top of the screen all I see is Restore, Minimise and Close. The Restore Down button is also not working. I have attached a screenshot. I am using Excel 2013 and Windows 10. I have googled this extensively and tried many things, but nothing is working for me. Your help would be much appreciated as I have wasted half a day on this already and am ready to pull my hair out. Thanks!

PS I have also uninstalled and reinstalled Office and rebooted, to no avail.

By Accident I Unplugged My Computer while it was on and now i am worried that my movie files will be corrupted...they seem to play fine...but i am still worried....please could somebody please help by telling me if any of my files will become damaged...thank you

A:By Accident I Unplugged My Computer While It Was On

Unless the files were open and being played or saved at the time of the power loss, there should be no damage.

But remember that power can do out at any time and hard disks die without warning (quite often, these days), so all your important data must be backed up. Since you are so worried it would suggest you have no backup plan. Maybe time to get one?

As an example I backup all new data every day, to a second and totally separate hard drive, then all data to DVD every week. Every DVD is "verified" to ensure that no files are corrupt in the copy process.

I went and inadvertantly disabled both monitors on my Ti4600 vid card. I just wanted to disable one as I thought having two caused problems using my mouse with the game Manhunt(retail copy). Mouse buttons worked but movement didn't.I tried three mice-optical,usb,ps/2 etc.I noticed the mouse cursor spanned both monitors during gameplay.
I installed on a slower machine (single monitor) and the mouse function as it should(ver slow computer though).

Hi all, I am new here so nice to meet you.
I have annoying problem. I was reinstalling xp and I created a new partition (not very familiar with what this means), and so now my c drive has changed its name to e. I have been to windows website none of the processes work (disk management ect), the computer just wont let me either delete the new partition or change the names of the drives. I know this is touchy buisness so I dont want to proceed until I know what I am doing.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Personally, I'd find it much easier to figure out what's going on here if I could see what Disk Manager says. You don't seem to have a very good grasp on disk terminology, so if you could take a screenshot of a fully expanded Disk Manager, (right click My Computer, select manage, on the right side of the screen choose disk management) then I can get back to you with much more specific advice.

Edit: To take a Screen shot, press print screen on your keyboard, and then paste into an image program such as paint. Save the resulting file, and then upload it to a site such as photobucket which will host the image for you for free. (You have to sign up for a free account first.) After uploading to an image hosting site, the site will provide you with several links that you can use to post the image here on this forum.

I might have erased something on regedit that is preventing me from startying any app right now. The only way to get to my web browser is through the "run" option. When ever I attempt to load something, "mozilla, explorer or any other app" I get an error message:

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.

All this is due to a stupid adware they I cannot get rid of but some help would be nice. Thanks again.

I recently built the computer shown in my specs. I didn't get to joining the existing homegroup quick enough. My wife needed files from one of the homegroup laptops. Having not joined, my wife attempted it but ended up creating a new homegroup on the new build. When I go into homegroup (start menu) I don't have the option to join a homegroup, nor do I have one to leave the homegroup.

So how do I delete the new homegroup created, so I can join my established group?

A:New homegroup created by accident

What you need to do is remove each computer from the new homegroup.

Once you've done that, the homegroup will no longer exist, leaving you free to rejoin your original homegroup.
