Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator Drivers

Q: Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator Drivers

I've been having some trouble on my computer getting the sound to work. I've traced the problem (I think) to the "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" - in Device Manager, it says that "this device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)" I've tried this solution but it doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions?

okay, here's a better take on my problem

I know what my problem is now. The Plug & Play Software Device Enumerator is failing to load the required drivers. now i've done alot of searching and i've found a solution that worked for others

the original can be found at:
http://weblogs.asp.net/lkempe/archive/2004/07/07/175765.aspx

But, In my own words:
uninstall Plug & Play Software Device Enumerator from the Device Manager
find the 'machine.inf' file and copy it to your desktop
open your copy of 'machine.inf' and delete the following (on line20)- ExcludeFromSelect=*
then, Add new hardware. follow the steps until you see the Have Disk button
click Have Disk and select 'machine.inf' from your desktop
[not sure abt this step] if you need to, re-install your sound drivers

Now, most of the people found that solution a success HOWEVER i didn't
After installing, it said the PnPSDE installed but may not work correctly due to Code31
PLEASE HELP!! appreciate it. take it easy

OK.. Yesterday, I noticed that my audio had stopped working. I reinstalled the audio drivers, scanned for hardware changes etc. to re detect it again but it was always detected with an error icon.

On further inspection, I found that under system devices in my device manager, the 'plug and play software device enumerator' was also showing an error icon. Trying to update the drivers didn't result in anything. Sadly, I uninstalled it hoping that a hardware scan would re-detect it and install the proper drivers.

Unfortunately, hardware scan didn't detect it again and all attempt to reinstall "plug and play software device enumerator" failed. There was a method to reinstall this in XP by modifying the machine.inf file but it too didn't reinstall the device. Attaching the error page on installation attempt.

Can anyone please suggest a solution for firstly, getting back the plug and play software device enumerator and secondly, my audio drivers. I am hoping that fixing the first problem will fix the second problem too.

Hi MilliR, welcome to the forums , try re installing the chipset and audio drivers ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support- , or alternatively right click on the devices with the triangle and exclamation mark and select "update driver" hope that helps

I've got an exclamation mark over my Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator under System Devices in my Device Manager. It almost seems as if it appeared overnight, for no reason.

I can't seem to re-install/update it. I don't want to remove it and reboot, since I've read elsewhere you will have a tough time getting it back. What gives here? Is it corrupt? How do I get it back into working order? Thanks for any help.

My Computer: HP G60-235DX. Windows 7 64-Bit

I was following another thread on this site but the problem was never resolved. Basically, I have no Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator under system devices in the device manager. This is causing problems with other things as well (im pretty certain the below problems are caused by the missing enumerator.

How can i reinstall it? I've tried to reinstall the chipset from HP but to no avail.

A:Missing Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator

First, try running the system file checker: run sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt.

If it throws up any missing files you'll most likely need to extract them from your Windows DVD.

Second, if that doesn't work, you might want to carry out a repair install of Windows: Repair Install

I, a long time ago, totally re-did my computer. It's an Averatec laptop, with which I am not exactly happy, but it works, so myeh.

I encountered a problem with the sound not working, so I Googled for many days and eventually found that I had to reinstall "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" through Device Manager, using machine.inf. I did that, and my sound works, but every time I restart the computer, I need to go into Device Manager, PnP SDE -> Update Driver, then click Have Disk, and now my problem.

There are 2 instances of PnP SDE available for me to update. I am supposed to click the second one and continue, selecting my moved & modified machine.inf, and this has always worked for restoring the sound. The problem is, now my modem does not work (at the time I fixed the problem, I was using ethernet cable connection). I believe that my modem not working is due to the fact that PnP SDE does not load on start-up. Can anyone tell how to fix this problem?

It's an internal modem, and when I try to connect to the internet (through PeoplePC) I get RAS Error 633: COM port already in use.

This is a question about a resolved problem's side effect,

I lost sound yesterday when booting win 7 after a Steam update. There was a yellow "!" next to my Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator as well as my Facetime HD Camera and my Cirrus Logic CS4206B and AMD High Definition Audio Device in Device Manager (I'm running Win7 Home Premium 64 bit on a mid 2011 iMac on a partition via bootcamp 5).

After lots of searching, I resolved the issue by deleting the nonworking Plug n Play Software Device Enumerator driver and running System File Checker from C:\ prompt. Reset and everything is working, I am a very happy human, but the Plug n Play Software Device Enumerator is still gone from Device Manager.

I had assumed, like other drivers, Windows would detect and re-install it. I don't even know what it is (or if I possibly could have just run the System File Checker and resolved the issue without deleting it) but I want to know if this is likely to cause problems down the line, or if it is something I shouldn't worry about. Everything is working fine, I just no longer see it in Device Manager, whereas deleting the other drivers would lead to their re-install...

Anyone got anything for me on this? Basically just looking to know if I'm ok, or should try and re-install this Software Device Enumerator. Thanks!

I have disable, enabled, deleted and reinstalled the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator. The exclamation point remains.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for the onboard sound card.

A:Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator Code 31

Try to visit the device again, and this time 'RIGHT CLICK AND REMOVE IT'

you can skip the next step by right clicking and selecting "scan for hardware changes"

Reboot, let windows 'attempt' to install it again. If windows can not auto install it please try the following.

Click Start, then RUN, then type 'cmd' press enter

You will be at a dos box, now type

systeminfo

[this will not work on XP Home (winme for those of you whom believe XP home = NT) edition.

this will display much needed information about your PC. Specifically the MOTHERBOARD model, it sounds to me like you have an ASUS motherboard, and or an HP pc. This is a common problem, and the enumerator is a modem ' dial up modem style' issue... 50/50 as PC can always have countless things wrong with them.

I hope this helps if you post a little more information I'll easily be able to help you out.

This problem is widely posted on the web, where the PC has no audio because it shows up under Device Manager that the Plug n Play Software Device Enumerator is not working properly (it has a yellow exclamation sign next to it), even though the audio devices are showing up properly under the Audio device manager.

So I follow the typical instructions to uninstall and re-install drivers and it still doesn't work, and the new device is showing up as a printer, when it's not.

Funny thing is, when I turn on the TV tuner card, I get audio from the sound card, so I know it's not a hardware issue, but when I try to play audio from Youtube or something web-based or media player, there is no sound.

Can anyone help? Should I try to run a repair or will I need to re-install the OS? I'm thinking I might as well go to Windows 7.

Hi there,
I have Windows Vista, Home Premium service pack 2, and quite literally one day last week I turned on my computer and quite literally, many of my device drivers had error problems, and my services that Vista runs on startup were also disabaled. Since then, I have managed to rectify many of the problems with my device drivers etc. but one Driver error still remains. The "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" has an exclimation mark beside it, thus indicating an error. The error is, and I quote:

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."

Solutions I have tried;

1. checking for solutions to it, no results
2. going to reinstall the driver, but to do that, I need to find/download the files "swenum.sys" and "swenum.inf" according to various sources on the net. Tried googling it, but to no avail, as the file seems to have vanished off the face of the net.
3. Disabling and Enabling the device (worth a shot :p), but still no joy.

I'm now at my wits end with this! The reason why this error was flagged to me, was because I bought Windows 7 to upgrade from Home Prenium Vista, and I also bought an external hard drive to transfer all my files to, as Windows Vista can't upgrade to Windows 7, thus the contents of my hard drive w... Ho -

XP Home/sp3: lost all sound due to pnp enumerator not functioning, error 31 (cannot load drivers). Have reinstalled pnp, no change. Have attempted to reload drivers from both internal files (swenum.sys & streamci.dll) and XP installation CD, installation wizard says drivers loaded but error 31 still shows in device manager and still no sound. Can I manually install these drivers and, if I do, will it help? I have AVG paid service, always possible an update corrupted files. Attempted to erase upper & lower filters for those drives but couldn't find corresponding files in Registry Editor.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for giving me the instant solution to this really annoying glitch.

Since the device is plug and play, I select automatic and I am on line but I get a notice the Wizard can not find a driver. I went to the device manufacturer and downloaded a driver to the Desktop. I told the wizard where the folder was but still get the message that the Wizard cant find a driver?? This has failed for devices as simple as USB flash storage, A cd drive and for an external Hard File. Any Ideas how I can get drivers loaded for these devices???

however, in the device manager hidden devices shows 'fips' under the non plug and play. this has a yellow exclamation mark. Am wondering if this has anything to do with usb ports not working after having a power supply installed.

Also, Would running the recovery disk help in reinstalling the driver for usb ports?

Hi! I had an external DVD recorder hooked up to my computer (Win XP SP2) and it started not to work too well so I bought a new one. It is a Sony DRX-820U. It is supposed to be plug and play, but when I hook it up, it comes up with Found new hardware, but then the Welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizard comes up and asks for the installation CD. Since it is Plug and Play, it did not come with an installation CD. When I cancel out of the Wizard, a message come up with an indication that the device may not work properly. In device manager it shows with a yellow ! with code 1 and says the device is not configured correctly. I spoke to tech support who told me that it was a registry problem and most likely a confliict with my former CD drive. I went through the registry and deleted every reference to my old drive, but the new one still doesn't install. Can anyone please help? It would be most appreciated!! Thanks in advance.

I now can power my computer on and off,use my internet, but I can't load any hardware,ie,printer,or run any applications. I bought an internal hardrive kit but can' t find how to hook it up. A:External Plug-n-play Device?

I suggest we first address the issue with the system. If you can power up and boot Windows, it's not totally dead. Do you know the make/model of the internal hard disk that's currently in the machine? You may want to try the disk manufacturer's diagnostic test on that drive.

First step would be to backup any data you want on that disk!

Here are some of the more popular disk maker's diagnostics.

SeaTools for DOS and Windows (Seagate and Maxtor drives)

WD Data Lifeguard Disk Diagnostic

Hitachi Drive Fitness Test

Samsung Drive Diagnostic Utility (Hutil)

Hello,

7 days after my Dell warranty expired my XPS 410 w/ Vista HP 32 bit has a big issue.

I am a novice but I have gathered that my plug and play is the issue. In services.msc, I cannot start plug and play, therefore cannot start windows audio service. It says plug and play service started and stopped. some services stop automatically if not in use. For windows audio i get error code 1059, circular dependency.

When I open device manager it is blank. I have absolutely no idea what is going on, this is all of a sudden. Also causing windows explorer to crash. I have done system restore and it still is not fixed, restore will not complete.

Any assistance is appreciated.

A:Plug and play/ blank device mgr/ no sound

So, it's a software problem. Use System Restore to roll back the PC to a time when the sound worked. Your personal problems won't be touched. Try reinstalling the sound drivers if that doesn't work. That'll probably fix everything.

I recently bought a 1TB external drive in the first month was the paradise of about three months here been hell ...

The problem is that the windows when i connect the disk, sometimes it correctly detects and installs the correct drivers, other times it detects wrong and installs other wrong drivers.
When you install the wrong windows drivers in Disk Manager says that is not present or does not detect the capacity, despite the indication that I have the the connected USB device. Another indicator light is always on the disc, rather than intermittently (indicating that it is accessing data) ...

To be even more difficult the drivers are registry keys ...

Have tested it on several PC with W7 and XP sp3 and the problem still occurs ...

Have I contacted the support of the disc but the impression I got is that understand of hardware even less than me ...

Hello Melbourne,

Everything MpKsl with 8 random letters and numbers following it belongs to Microsoft Security Essentials.

The beep you are referring to belongs to the BIOS which is capable of giving out differing Beeps to indicate if your hardware is ok or not. 1 beep being for ok

Im sorry for the legnth of this, but i tried to put step by step what ive done so far as to give you a better picture.
Ok, i should start by saying I just resently did a Hard drive swap, and this is when this problem started. After the HD swap everything seems to work perfect.. except this.

I noticed when i went to watch a movie on my Xbox (streamed from wmp) that it now says, Lost connection to Computer.

So i opened up Windows Media Player and went to select Media Sharing and click ok, and it just freezes there for about 10-15 seconds then unfreezes and nothing happens. A fairly common problem, ive found, as i researched possible solutions.

The first advice i got was to go into my Administrative Tools (from control panel) then go to Services. First they say to check your SSDP Discovery Service and make sure its set to Automatic, and that the service is started. Ok fine,

Then scroll down my services further to Universal Plug and Play Device Host. Do the same, set it to auto, and start the service. However when i try to start the service it comes up with this.

"The Universal Plug and Play Device Host service on Local Computer was started then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service."

So i thought, ok i guess that sounds fine.

Then lastly, in the services, i also was told to scroll down further untill i got to Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service. Go into it, set it to ... Read more

Hi peeps.

I've got a huge problem with my comp, and I'm a rank amateur so require some help with it. I have a Compaq Presario cq60 with Vista x32 Home Premium SP1.

The audio symbol by the clock has a little red 'x' over it and when I hover the mouse over it reads, 'The Audio Service is not running'. When I click the option to start the Audio Service, I've noticed there are no audio/sound drivers installed whatsoever. I've tried re-installing the drivers but they will not work. (The Audio Service is still not recognising any audio/sound drivers).

I have gone to Device Manager but it is completly empty. I've gathered form other threads and forums that there is a plug and play issue.

In services.msc (Control Panel - Administration Tools - Services) Plug and Play is simply not listed at all, so I have no way to set it to automatic.

For Windows Audio I get error code 1059, circular dependency when I try to start it (it's stopped).
I have done system restore and it still is not fixed. I've tried reinstalling the sound drivers and that won't work. I'm going to install Vista SP2 to see if that works. i'll let you knwo if it works, however on other forums this has not worked for either problems.

Any assistance is greatly greatly appreciated.

If UPnP is disabled (a security option availible sometimes) you might get that action and message, or if no UPnP devices are detected after a short time maybe?

If you are trying to connect a UPnP device through a router it may be disabled there as a security measure as well.

Im sorry for the legnth of this, but i tried to put step, by step what ive done so far as to give you a better picture.
Ok, i should start by saying I just resently did a Hard drive swap, and this is when this problem started. Everything seems to work perfect.. except this.

Go into it, set it to automatic and sta... Read more

I am trying to start the Universal Plug and Play Device Host service to use Windows Media Sharing. All of the other services required to run the Windows Media Player Network Sharing service and Universal Plug and Play Device Host service are running and set to automatic. When I try to run the Universal Plug and Play Device Host service I get "Error 126: The specified module could not be found".

Below is the registry for this service if that helps anybody.

Can anybody help me fix this?

My sony pcv v200g all in one desktop with XP home edition recently stopped recognizing any devices that are plug and play. my flash drive, lynksis wireless adapter, etc. all of the sudden don't work in any of the 4 usb ports. The printer and my dell axim cradle still work in all of the 4 usb ports. I did full a full restore and they still do not work. On device manager there are no yellow exclamations. When I click on the unknown device it says there are no drivers for this device. When you click on update drivers it says the best driver was already being used. Any ideas.

Hello, I am hoping someone here might have some thoughts on what could cause a self-installing USB device to fail.

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2.

I purchased a Mint 220 wireless USB device. This device requires no software. The USB device is supposed to automatically install when you plug it into a USB port. However, rather than seeing the System Tray messages that it found new hardware and then installs the hardware, I am getting the Found New Hardware Wizard. It is looking for an .inf file for the USB device, but the driver file does not exist and there is no place to direct the wizard.

I tried rebooting, but the problem still exists. I tried reading the user guide for this product and looking at the FAQs, but my problem was not described. I contacted the tech support people, but they only came up with a series of steps to try that did not work.

So now I am wondering if there is some device setting or registry setting that is preventing me from self-installing this device. I have not changed any settings on my system, and I have never experienced this problem with any other device. I also tried switching to different USB ports with the same effect.

Can anyone help? Thanks.

I made this thread yesterday about my Xbox 360 controller not working: http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-...-problems.html I thought that was my only problem, but it's now apparant that my windows will no longer allow me to use any plug & play devices other than what I already have installed (my mouse, keyboard, webcam etc.). Any new peripheral I have that I connect that would have worked in the past within seconds now has its driver searched for only to come up with the driver not being able to be installed or even recognised at all.

UPDATE: I've been googling the hell out of this for 3 days now, by chance I found an article for Windows Vista dated from 2008, seems all I had to do was direct the driver install to "C:\windows\winsxs" and bang! Problem sorted, all my USB peripherals auto install quickly again.

Hello, i've recently installed Windows 7 and cannot get my printer (lexmark p4350) to work.

The problem is that the installation of the drivers won't continue without printer plugged in, and when I plug it in, Windows automatically installs it's own driver, which doesn't work.

I've tried disabling Plug&Play for the duration of the install process, but haven't got any luck, i'm starting to think that it is impossible on Windows 7 (i know that on Vista it was just a matter of disabling it through services.msc).

I would appreciate any ideas you might have.

Although written in response for a Vista problem with your printer the answer holds true but you will have to point it to where the driver is on your hard drive.

I have a Home Premium 64bit and about 6 months ago my laptop's audio stopped working. The speaker icon disappeared from the notification bar, but it is still an option under customize, but it only says the audio service is not running. Also the Windows Media Player opens for a few seconds before closing with no errors or any explanation. Just sudden exit. I can't play audio through headphones or online. I've tried to see my devices manager but it comes up blank as if nothing is there and with My Devices and Printers it loads and freezes in place. I've left it up for days before and it never loaded.

I only recently tried to fix it myself because I don't have enough to be overcharged for something simple at a shop. I've gone into the regedit and everything is there. Under services though, the Plug and Play says automatic but it's greyed out and I can't change it, the service status says stopped and when I click start says "windows could not start the Plug and Play service on Local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified." When I try to start the Windows Audio under services it says "Windows could not start the Windows Audio service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start." I've seen from my Googling that all the audio and device manager and based on the Plug and Play and that might be why nothing's working, but I'm completely stuck now.

Thanks for any help.

A:Plug and Play, Audio service, and device manager all not working

There are Windows OS problems, more than just the sound is not working. Sadly, I would suspect it will need a complete reinstall. If you want to do this, the first thing to do is back up (copy) all your user data to some external media as it will be lost during the reinstall. Then use the built in Dell PC Restore to restore it to the original factory condition. F8 at power on will allow you to access the Dell PC restore (recovery) and allow you to do the restore.

Another option is to upgrade to Windows 10 (assuming the hardware and what software you use is compatible). This will give you a fresh install, but will not delete any user data.

i would really like some help in order to disable a plug and play window from appearing when i start windows, while still having the functionality if i want to use plug and play to install other devices... i've had a problem with this for months a plug and play window wanting to install my printer pops up every startup, i have already fixed and tested my printer, and on device manager it says it is installed with no problems, so i think this is a bug, because it works fine, i just need ink, but i can print a blank page from windows...

A:stopping a single plug and play device (Not the service) from activating

The New Hardware Wizard may detect the printer device after every restart of the computer

Found this at Kelly's:

Workaround for HP Printers:

1. When the Found New Hardware Wizard starts at startup of the computer, click <next>.

2. When it asks you for the HP disk, (the next thing that will require a response from you probably), click <ok>. However, do NOT insert the disk into your CD-ROM drive.

3. On the next screen that comes up, there will be a button that is already highlighted telling the wizard where to find the printer driver (which is what it is looking for). This button will be pointing it at "other media, CD-ROM,
etc.

The trick is to DESELECT this button. At that point, the button for your C: drive will become active and you can select the C: drive. It will also probably be prompting you with the location for the already installed HP printer driver that is somewhere on your C: drive. (If not, you need to click browse and locate the driver).

4. After you have deselected the CD-ROM and selected the C: drive, click <ok> (or <next> or whatever.) The Wizard then makes a second copy of your printer driver (and, by the way, creates a second "installed printer" in your Control Panel/Printers). And then, the wizard finally completes and tells you that you have successfully installed the new hardware.

5. On subsequent startup, the Wizard should then NOT run.

Have you checked for malware? I'd suggest running the free Malwarebytes. Update the database and run the full scan. It could take over an hour depending on size of hard drive.

Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a free download that removes viruses and malware from your computer

If Malwarebytes is clean I'd next check the integrity of your system files. Try running System File Checker. If it finds any problems run 3-4 scans.

Hello,
I am currently running a tablet netbook with w7 pro x32. It's not powerful enough to run photoshop very well, and my license wouldn't let me put it on there anyway. However, this netbook is a tablet. I'd like to use it for graphics, as it has a Wacom digitizer.

What I'm interested in doing is running a VNC to access my desktop (running w7 pro x64) and be able to control photoshop from my tablet.

Currently, I've tried Windows Remote Desktop, and while it works fairly well, two things are wrong:
1) Mouse/Tablet input seems to be compressed. This turns my curves into straight lines unless I go reeeeally slowly. Is there any way to change this?
2) There seems to be an option for plug-and-play drivers to be transferred, is there *any* way to make pressure sensitivity work?

I have looked into other solutions, such as TightVNC, UltraVNC, and LogMeIn Free, but VNC isn't very secure (and I don't want to deal with SSH tunneling) and LogMeIn Pro is expensive, while LogMeIn Free is limited.

On that note, I haven't been able to find out *anything* relating to the security of Windows Remote Desktop. Is it encrypted, or what? Security is important to me, as I am running both the desktop and the netbook on networks that I have no control over, and are inherently insecure.

I haven't found much info about Remote Desktop, so can someone please help?

A:Remote Desktop Access with Plug-and-play Drivers

Hi there.

The problem with RDP in your case is probably that the Graphics format you are trying to display on your tablet computer is incompatable with the display option on your remote computer - for example a 24 inch wide screen monitor won't display very well on a smaller tablet computer with different orientation.

Try and select a video size which will fit on both machines.

Running Photoshop or any other video application on a remote computer also will require you to have a decent UPLOAD speed from the rempte computer.

A lot of home broad band systems advertise really fast download speeds such as 20mb but upload speeds can be painfully slow - this is done also to stop people having HUGE home web sites or to prevent a lot of file sharing via p2p or torrents.

The tablet should be able to run the remote photoshop app just fine so long as the upload speed and graphics systems are sufficient.

RDP (so long as you aren't using the web interface) is reasonably secure.

If you want to operate in "Paranoia Mode" try setting your home (or remote system) as a VPN. These are generally very secure with decent encryption.

Cheers
jimbo

Hi,
I have a little problem with my custom USB device. I think it has something to do with Vista installation routines... So here are the steps that describe the problem. I install drivers for my device on Vista and than plug in the device. I go through all the wizards that windows suggests but Vista can't find a proper driver.Than i goto to my Control panel, find the device and do the "Refresh driver" directly pointing to the place where drivers have been installed. And than everything goes fine. So the trouble is Vista can't find proper drivers when i plug in the USB device. What could possibly go wrong? The same works perfectly on XP. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi! Was doing some "Fall Cleaning" and I guess got a bit ahead of myself with C Cleaner and uninstalling old trial games and old programs and it deleted all of my system restore points (not a HUGE deal if I can just get these few driver problems fixed) and now won't load several drivers....

Before I list the drivers that it will not load, I will mention that it wouldn't load the CD/DVD Rom Drivers previously, however I found this thread: http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/768635-solved-im-idiot-accidentally-deleted.html and did the REGEDIT text file and that fixed the DVD drive.

I accidentally uninstalled and deleted in the Device Manager window the PLUG AND PLAY feature which has totally ruined my world.

Also in Device Manager, there are "Won't Work Exclamation Points" (the icon i chose for the "Post Icon") on the following -

-HP Deskjet F4100
-Conexant D850 PCI V.92 Modem (if this is the dial-up modem, I've never used it)
-SyncMaster 2253BW/2253LW )Samsung Monitor Driver even though it seems to be working)
-Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller
-AMD Ahtlon(tm)64 Processor 3200+

The biggest problem is the Plug and Play issue - Is there a regedit thing similar to the thread I listed above that could fix this problem?

Hey guys, just found this forum and was hoping you could help...

No plug and play USB devices will work. Just poking around... looks like somehow all of my native USB drivers have been deleted.

Asks me to either find the drivers for the device or plug in a CD or else the install fails, and since the items are plug and play, there isnt a CD. Also for example on my keyboard, its plug and play, should be "HID Keyboard", but if I plug it into a different port and install it as such it says it wont work.

The only things that are USB that still work with my computer are my old items that I've had plugged into the same ports for months. If i change the port, the same thing happens.

Oh and if I'm in the Bios, everything seems to work fine. But unfortunately I havnt found a way to make the Bios control all USB devices

my "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" area in my native driver selection area is empty.

Hey, I just got a new motherboard/cpu/smaller case... really nice looking media center edition black case. It all booted up fine, got most the drivers, I have an 80gb HDD on SATA0 and a 320gb on SATA1, 32 bit on 0, 64 bit on 1, Default to 64 bit. It was all working fabulously before, and I fried my CPU, so I decided to go the extra mile for a new mobo and case as well. My 32 bit XP is fine, has all the drivers, everything is tested, USB front and back, front and back audio, and everything else.

On x64 though, it had all the drivers, I even saw it in Device Manager previous to the chaos, and from what I think did it, was GlarysTools or something like that... I uninstalled it, so it has no 'recovery' backup from before. Hi. I've got a Windows 7 64-bit machine that is freezing shortly after logon. Windows Explorer is still responsive, but nothing else will launch. For example, if I shut down, the system will start to shut down but will stop and wait because the process playing the shutdown sound is not responding. The processor and RAM load is still low. So it seems everything new is queued behind some process that won't complete.

The system is clean according to both Malwarebytes and Symantec Endpoint Protection.

By process of elimination, I have found this freeze happens only when Windows' Portable Device Enumerator Service is enabled.

Now I'm stumped. I'm not really sure what this service does; it appears to have to do with group policies and plug-and-play USB devices. Any recommendations for what to try next to get this working normally?

I recently found out that my Microsoft Device Association Root Enumerator has stopped working, it stopped since yesterday after I uninstalled the Intel? Extreme Tuning Utility (Intel? XTU) software. I had an installation of it through as an optional Windows Update, but didn't realize that the software itself was for desktop motherboards until later on. I went to try to uninstall it through Windows Updates and could find no instance of the files.

So instead, went to my machine manufacturers site and then downloaded the files from there to install and then uninstall the files. I uninstalled the files successfully form the add/remove programs control panel, but that was when Microsoft Device Association Root Enumerator had stopped working, the driver appearing grey instead of solid.

Can anyone help me with this?

Hey all,

I've been working on this for a few days, and can't fix it.

I had the "google-redirect" rootkit on my computer, and I managed to remove it with the Kaspersky TDSS rootkit unhooker. In doing so, it removed the corrupted file and didnt replace it.

The file was swenum.sys, one of the two files that makes the windows plug and plug software enumerator work. So this left me without sound. It showed up as "no audio device" in control panel.

I tried to reinstall the PnP enumerator by replacing the machine.inf file and removing line 20 (? or 21, I'd have to look again). But anyways, this gave me a multiple copy of Pnp enumerator. So, I then tried to get rid of the duplicate entry by deleting it from the registry (using regedt32). Only, every time I try to do this, it won't stay gone. The system became pretty unstable whenever a program loaded that runs audio (opera, ie, etc.)

I also tried deleting the doubled up ghost entries (all the Kernel audio drivers) that show up in device manager, that didnt do anything, they came back each time I rebooted. I finally removed the HDaudio device altogether, that got rid of all the kernel audio errors, and created an error with my PCI device? The system is stable now, and running a lot faster (I took the opportunity to strip a bunch of junk from my startup).

My question is, does anyone know how to successfully remove a duplicate entry of PnP software enumerator? And, I can't figure out ... Read more

I think that this shouldn’t be a hectic one…there are software that can convert the DVD format into the formats supported by your Zune.My cousin uses Zune Movie Converter which give him speedy and smooth conversion of his DVD formats and makes it perfect to play on his Zune device. It would be a good option to give this one a try.

So currently I have my PC connected to the printer with a USB cable and my 10 year old printer works just fine. I'm turning my desktop into a wireless desktop for the time being and going to install a WiFi pci card in the tower. Once I get my computer connected online wireless. So if I take the printer USB cable from the back of the PC tower and plug it into the back of the router will the printer work right away or do I have to setup the printer within the routers 192.... page ? or will I have to install any extra router software programs on the PC to get the printer to work ? I'm just wondering what my steps will be.

A:So if I plug my printer to my router will it be plug&play ?

It really depends on your router. Some routers do have that functionality and are "smart" enough to realize what to do with a printer attached via USB ports. Some may require you to configure it on the router's setup, and others may not let you network your printer at all that way. You should probably count yourself lucky if your router does it at all... my router has USB ports, but they're basically only good for charging a phone... they planned a firmware update to do more with them, but it never came through.

The most foolproof way to network a printer is to get a model with an Ethernet port or a Wi-Fi card built into the printer that's just designed for networking. Any computer on the network will then "see" the printer and be able to install drivers for it without the router having to be smart. Failing that, you might have to plug the printer's USB cable into a computer of some kind... but the catch is, it doesn't have to be very powerful or large. A $5 Pi Zero or a $30 "print server" off Newegg would do the job. Basically, any old computer lying around with USB ports could most likely work as a print server if it can be configured with CUPS and the appropriate version of Samba.

Anyhow, my laptop does not seem to notice a new piece of hardware has been added. I tried rebooting and checking all the cables and all seems OK there.

This is an update to my last post, since then, the system crashed and have only just got back on line.
I have an IBM Thinkpad 240, model 2609-21U with Windows ME and am using a Micro Solutions Backpack bantam CD ROM external drive model 181100, parallel port connection.
Some months ago I attempted to load Office XP, this did not fully install and "unrolled" itself. This action somehow corrupted the registry and would not reboot even into 'safe mode.'
I finally got into DOS and ran scanreg. Then I ran configsafe, this has got the machine running but will not read the parallel printer port LPT1, USB or the IR ports. All else seems OK.
When I reload the backpack driver, it loaded in the control panel under a SCSI device manager with a conflict, when I rebooted using the 'safe mode', the control panel seems correct, but then I am in 'safe' mode and cannot access the CD-ROM.
At the moment the backpack driver loads into it's own folder in device manager, not under cd-drives, there is no cd-drive folder.
When I try to print, the paper keeps feeding through the printer continuously without printing.
The only conflicts I can find are :-
IRQ Holder for PCI Steering Device ID PCI\IRQ Holder\60 error code 22
I was also getting :-
Environment variables were found in the legacy files autoexec.bat and/or config.sys and the variables were moved to the windows registry. ---but this has now gone.

I recently put a new 30 Gig harddrive on an old pieced together computer. When I loaded windows on it, it didn't find any PnP devices and said that it was missing drivers and for other devices. I took the same hard drive out and put on another computer and it worked fine and located all my PnP. What's worse is that my old 6 Gig harddrive that i was replacing will not boot up anymore except in safe mode. I tried replacing the motherboard with a new one as well with no success. Same results. A tech said when he looked at it that the IDE cable was not plugged in correctly. He turned it around and said it would be fine. Needless to say, it is not. It now gives a blank black screen. Would windows have installed with the cable in wrong and why did my board recognize it? Any ideas???

A:win 98 se and plug and play

Had the cable been in wrong, then no it would not have recognized it, would not have therefore allowed you to install..and then subsequently boot into safe mode...

It appears that either the tech lied because he/she didn't know much or if the tech did put the cable on wrong then I fear for the current state of your sys. board...Most new cable connectors are such that they will only go on one way...Otherwise, they would have to be forced and would break/bend pins...
Was this warranty work? I would contact the manufacturer and the authorized service center manager that sent that tech. regardless of whether your cable is on correctly or not because the simple truth is that it was not repaired and the services were paid for...BOL

Hi patti9,

Assuming you are on a WinXP computer: Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
will bring up the Services window.

Right-click the Universal Plug & Play Device Host service, and select Properties.
Use the pull-down in the Startup Type to select Disabled.
Click on Apply
Click Ok to exit the UP&P Properties window
Exit the Services window
Done.

When I was installing Windows XP SP3 on this computer, I received a notice that the installer couldn't find a specific file, but I was able to skip over it and resume installation. I received this notice when I installed Windows on another machine but this time looked it up and was able to find the file on the CD (don't remember the file name...).

On the first computer, it seems like a lot of plug and play functionality doesn't work...specifically when I hook up my Creative Zen (MP3 player) or even Blackberry. I am unable to transfer files to or from these devices through Explorer like I can the other computer in which I did a thorough installation of Windows. I am also unable to update Windows Media Player, which could or could not be related.

Is it possible the file I skipped over is what's causing this issue? Is there any way I can repair Windows or do I have to re-install?

Windows 98 hangs on boot screen at plug and play then when you reboot again it take you into config screen. Does this mean that the plug and play is disabled and need to be enabled. How concerned should I be in here I'm afraid I could mess things up. Then it asks for you to choose F10 and select yes to save changes!. OH BOY!

A:Plug and Play

d.a.,

You could mess things up, but you won't if you don't mess with what you don't know about.

And if you DO change something and get scared, then DO NOT SAVE. If you exit without saving, then 'No Harm, No Foul'.

At this point, I'm not sure what the problem is, but LOOK through the BIOS...it will be a good learning experience...and when you find the entry that says, "PnP Op/Sys installed" it should say Yes. Win 98 is a PnP Op/Sys.

One unanswered question on my mind is when did this start to happen and what did you do or change JUST BEFORE it began?

THE PROBLEM:The computer doesn't work with "plug and play" checked in the services (msconfig). When "plug and play" is checked, the computer's CPU runs at mostly 100% non-stop. When I uncheck it the computer works fine but then nothing plug and play works.

The trouble started after I clicked on a fake facebook link through email. My antivirus (Avast) asked to abort and I did. But, later the computer started doing funny things like the firewall turning off, some wierd icon in my user accounts (control panel), and the 100% CPU lockup. Update: the firewall works fine now.

I've tried to restore but it's not working.
I've tried to use the recovery system CD but I don't have the admin password (don't know how I forgot it and tried everything).

Does anyone have any thoughts about the below statement? It's from MS Windows XP Inside Out by Bott, Siechert and Stinson. I'm getting conflicting information. In XP Annoyances by David Karp, it says just the opposite---make sure the BIOS is set to Plug and Play.

Any comments or insight would be greatly appreciated. When in doubt should I enable PNP or not?

"After verifying that you're running the most recent BIOS version, use the BIOS setup program to select the "non-Plug and Play operating system" option. This advice may seem counterintuitive-after all, Windows XP is indeed a Plug and Play operating system. However, this setting was intended for use with earlier Windows versions, and if it's set incorrectly it can prevent the Windows XP boot loader from accessing devices at startup. "

A:Plug and Play

Chances are it will make no difference. XP overrides many BIOS settings, IRQ's, and memory resource assignments.

I would tend to think that setting Plug and Play active would prevent conflicts between what resources were assigned if the BIOS' assignments differed from XP's preferences.

If there is ever a booting problem such as he described, just enter BIOS setup and try it the other way .

I have a dell dimension 8100. It was working fine until I decided to use it as a host to install xp on a spare but used 80 gig hd. I have done this many times using any dell to write to the hd. In this case The install process got up to the pont where I make various choices. During one of its restarts to display the next screen I got 2 error messages, fan not detected, which is true, and plug and play error. At this point the "PRESS F1 to continue, or F2 to enter setup" is supposed to appear. In this case the screen got STUCK on the error, I tried another copy of the cd. Same result. I reconnected the first hdd only to get the same error. The diagnostic lights are GREEN,GREEN,GREEN,YELLOW. No usable info in the manual. What is the fix? This tower was very stable. I do not want to lose it. I do not understand this error. The spare hdd is probably good. [email protected]

Hi, up until recently my computer was able to have plug & play devices inserted and used without error.

now, the problem is i cannot use any PLug & play devices, eg. USB Key, PSP, Scanner etc.

The computer seems to be able to detect what the Hardware is, but thats as far as it gets, then asks me to find install the software.. which should install automatically from the devices.

Plus a new item in the device manager has appeared, its called 'eeyeh' and contains all the Plug & Play devices.

I have tried system restore but each time it failed to restore the system to a point before the occurance.

Attached is a screen shot of the 'device' in question.

Thanks in advance.
