CMS Backup External Device, USB HUB error

Q: CMS Backup External Device, USB HUB error

I'm operating on a Dell Inspirion 5150 Laptop/Windows XP.
I have had a CMS External USB Backup Device for 6 months now. All of a sudden it gives me an error message when I plug it into my USB port. It states "the Device is more powerful" then the USB hub speed can support. Then asks me to detach device and hit "reset" to reactive that port. I've tried my other USB port as well with the same error message. I was not having those issues before, even though I was using the same laptop. Anyway to fix that?
The device still has room for additional storage as well. It is not full.

I purchased a used laptop with xp pro installed. No resource CD's. Wish to make a back up using XP backup wizard and store on my external hard drive. File transfer stopped and i received an error message stating that 4g was max allowed to Fat32. My external hard drive is 40g and approx 3-4 years old.
What are my lowest cost options to create backups?
Can I upload my data from ext hard drive to another pc, convert Fat32 to NTFS using XP Covert utility and xfr data back to ext HD? By doing this, will the XP wizard be successful in making a backup on the converted ext HD?

I run a backup tape on the company server, it schedule at 2:00 o'clock A.M. My problem is we have a alot to storage so when I come in at 6:00 A.M. I put a second tape in. Then at around 12:00 P.M I put a 3rd tape it finally completes its the whole backup.

Here is my creative thinking. Is there a external backup device that I could put 3 tapes or more in and have a Data tape that is tied to the device ( example; Think of a box with a tail and at the tip of the tail it has a data storage tape ) and then insert that tape to the server so when the backup schedule runs at 2:00 A.M. and when it stops at 5:00 A.M it will trigger the second tape in the device and so forth. Hopefully I made this clear.

Is there a device like that?

During Windows backup, which wants to backup the 'C' drive and my games drive 'E' (for some reason), I get the following error message after the 'C' backup has completed but not the 'E':

'The backup operation that started at '‎2015‎-‎12‎-‎20T06:00:25.459859400Z' has failed with following error code '0x8078012D' (The operation failed due to a device error encountered with either the source or the destination. If the source or destination volume is on a disk, run CHKDSK /R on the source or destination volume, and then retry the operation.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.'

I ran CHKDSK \R and received several errors of the type: 'A disk read error occurred 0000185. The disk does not have enough space to replace bad clusters detected in file xxxxxx of name xxxxxx.'

My 'E' drive is 2TB with 205GB free. I really don't believe that the cluster(s) in error are bigger than 205G, but what do I know?

Anyone have experience with this problem?

Thanks.

Hi there,
I did a search on google and through these forums search function but all I can seem to find are topics about vista and backing up problems. I did find a link to a microsoft hotfix for my problem, but it was only for specifically 4GB+ of Ram and an nVidia USB EHCI. Sadly I do not meet these specs.

The problem started with copying a bunch of files over from one external HDD to another (friend's to mine). It froze about half way through and locked up my whole computer. This had happened once (I think, maybe twice?) befor when copying files from my C drive over to my external, and turning my PC off/on again sorted it out.
Since then my external is experiancing a host of problems. It doesn't shut off if you unplug it from the computer or turn the computer off, it's always whirring. It's greyed out if you go to safely remove hardware. Opening a media file in anything gives an error (eg. VLC gives this error):
File reading failed: VLC could not open the file "E:\Insert File Here".
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'E:\Insert File Here'. Check the log for details.Click to expand...

Upon trying to copy anything to or from the HDD and trying to move/delete any files, it gives me the old error in the topic title: 0x8007045D I/O device error.

I expect one solution is to completely re-format my external HDD, but I can't stress how much I REALLY don't want to do that without being able to get mos... Read more

I'm not sure if this should be posted here, since I guess that it is a systems failure issue.
I am having some major issues with attempting to do a backup of all my system drives - all attempts have failed.
What I have done so far;
Tried to do a Windows backup from my laptop to a Passport external hard drive - first failure.
Failed again when I tried another Windows backup, this time to an Imation external hard drive - second failure.
Did an Administrator CHKDSK/R on the Laptop hard drives, and both external hard drives. All came up clean.
Tried to do two more alternative backups using Macrium Reflect - both similarly failed.

After each failed backup, all attempts got messages similar to the following;

I"m trying to make a system image of my laptop hard drive onto my new 1 TB Seagate internal HD using a Rocketfish case. Some time after it starts doing a data transfer, I get a "the backup failed" red bar. I've read online things about having to delete hidden system partitions, but it's all fuzzy and I'm not about to start deleting things without knowing what I'm doing.

This move is necessary for me, since my existing laptop HD is beginning to fail and I need to move its contents asap. I did run a system check on my laptop and it found no errors.

Any help appreciated. I've researched this online til I'm blue in the face. Thanks.

A:Backup to external HD fail error 0x8078002A

Maybe there is a problem with your laptop HD which you mentioned about "is beginning to fail" and Windows can not read all the sectors , so you got this error message.
If you want to make a backup and you know your HD is beginning to fail, so do a Copy instead of backup,
Ofcourse this is not the way to solve your problem but could prevent you to lose your critical data.

Had this Western Digital external 1TB drive for about a year and one day last week it stopped showing up in 'My Computer'. After a bit of mucking about with it, I read online that if all else fails, I should remove the drive from the casing and connect it directly to my PC using an additional SATA connection (1 of 2 spare on the MOBO) Fair enough, went and bought a new SATA cable and attached it using the additional power connection on main disk drive (so both are connected to the main power on the same cabling).

Went in to the 'Snap-In' Tool in 'Manage' in 'My Computer' and checked the storage. The disk drive is showing as 'Not Initialised' and gives me the option to Initialise. When I try and initialise, it gives me the I/O Device Error message. Now I'm lost and have no idea what to do next.

For your info - I have tried replacing the drive back in it's casing and get a different message suggesting the 'drive cannot locate the sector'. So I have put it back in the PC at present via the SATA cabling and still have this I/O device error, regardless which od the two spare slots in the MOBO I use to connect.

I am using Vista, 2GB RAM in Dual 1GB slots (Packard Bell) and 2 x 2.33 processors. I am not too bothered where the drive ends up, but I would just like to get it working again to retrieve the data. Additionally, the external drive in question shows activity on start up (it spins for about five seconds... Read more

I bought 2 new 3Tb Seagate Expansion drives model STAY3000300.

I tried to "Create a system image" and both 3Tb drives were presented as possible destination discs. I selected one of them and after a couple of messages about preparing and starting the following message was displayed. (same message on the other 3Tb drive as well)

The backup failed

BIG RED BAR

One of the backup files could not be created. (0x8078002A)

Additional Information:
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error, (0x8007045D)

The system is Windows 7 64bit and bang up to date with Windows update. The system disc is a OCZ Agility 3 120Gb SSD.

Another strange thing is I have been doing backups to another external disc for many months - a 1Tb Iomega portable external.

The MAIN BU file is about 26Gb and, yes, all my discs are formated as NTFS so it is not a file size issue.

I am not desperate as I have other discs to backup to but I am curious why the backups fail on the new 3Tb external drives?

A:i/o device error external hard drive please help me anyone

I dont want to cause panic.. but.. I/o errors are normally always related to knackered hardware.. I.e your hard drive.

theres a few things you can try first.

The standard Microsoft protocol is to first check that windows is fully up to date incase youre missing a key upated system file.
Next you could try uninstalling your usb drivers in device manager and reboot. (youll loose control of any usb device plugged in before the reboot).
It might not seem the most logical thing to try but it was suggested to me once and it did the trick for my issue.

Failing that Microsoft q and a also suggests shrinking the partitions if possible using disc manager.

Hello so this is the issue.

I have win vista x64,sp2.
Toshiba satellite
and a Seagate freeagent goflex 1tb external HD.

I had been using the external for a while. noticed some information wasnt really working properly. I thought I would do a chkdsk.

However, I used Tuneup utilities to perform the thorough chkdsk of my external HD, i figured it would find and fix any bad clusters. WRONG. after 20hrs of waiting. I restarted the PC, and now i cant access any information. The external shows up in "computer" I can open certain folders but after a few mins I cant access anything and i get the I/O device error...

ive tried running chkdsk /r just from the PC in a CMD window. It shows a list of 30-50 files that are "unreadable" and sticks on a certain file at around 6% complete every time.

Ive tried all of seagates suggestions and other then that everyone else just says to run chkdsk on other forums. I really do not want to loose this information at all costs...

any information would be fantastic.

thanks for your help in advance.

How can I fix this?!

A:External Hard Drive I/O Device Error

It's a process of eliminating one source at a time.

The following assumes you have experienced no prior problems using your USB ports.

The first thing I would do is remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it directly to a desktop computer where I would run CHKDSK /R. If that is negative, I would download the drive manufacturer's testing utility and check it for fitness. (Some second-rate companies offer no such testing utility.)

If all of that is negative, you have either a bad enclosure or some problem with your USB port.

I have a Western Digital external USB hard drive, the 160gig model. I was watching a video from the drive and it got unplugged accidentally. Now whenever I plug it it in I get the following error in a bubble in the bottom right corner:

USB Device Not Recognized One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message.

When I click the message, it displays a list of Unknown Devices attached to the Root USB Hub. Which in turn doesn't help me at all.

I have tried searching the web for drivers, used different usb cables, connecting it to my xbox360. Nothing seems to work. I can feel the drive spining on the inside and the lights signifying its on, but no soft response :(

If anyone has any helpful info on this or has experienced the same situation please let me know.

Hi All,

I have an external USB floppy drive that I bought from Amazon (I am not sure what make it is but appears as a Sony external drive in Device Manager).

I have a Macbook Pro, running Windows 7 Ultimate in bootcamp (native). I have no warning icons next to the device in Device Manager and it appears in My Computer as drive A. When I go to open up a floppy disk I get the message: The request could not be completed because of an I/O device error.

After some research I noticed people saying it was either the floppy drive cable or the drive itself that could be faulty. However, using the device (and the same floppy disk) on my home built PC running Windows 2003 Server, SP2 it works flawlessly.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? I was hoping to use this device to create start up disks for old PC's that I rebuild. Using on my home built PC isn't really a viable option as sometimes I need to take the drive with me.

Many thanks in advance for any help you can give me and if you need any further information I will do my best to supply it.

Hi all,

I have recently bought an R830 1HD which has windows 7 as its OS.
I have some old external hard drives that were formatted on windows vista.

When i try to use them on my new computer it says "Target device not found"
I phoned the support for the external hardrive who said this is an incompatability issue and that I would need to re format the external hard drives (and hence lose everything on them unless I copied them onto a compatible hard drive).
Is this true?

Rather than go through the hassle of copying all the data onto another hardrive is there a way of making my new computer compatible with the external hard drive?

Your help is much appreciated.

Cheers,

i had an old notebook with an overheating problem that I thought I had fixed, so I transferred all my music and picture files to it. then the problem recurred and the computer won't reboot. So I pulled the hard drive and put it in an enclosure I've used before, and am working through trying to get it recognized by my new notebook as an external hard drive.

Device Manager recognizes the drive and indicates that it is working properly, and it appears in Disk Management as well. However, in Disk Management, it shows as Disk 2; Unknown; Not Initialized. When I attempt to initialize it, I get the error "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

I've tried to initialize it as MBR and GPT, with no luck, and I've checked the device drivers to make sure they're up to date (they are).

What else can I try? I will try anything, but if it's hopeless, I need to know that too. I just don't want to give up if there's a chance!

Thanks.

Well, my external drive is labelled "J," and has been for the past year when I've successfully backed up my hard drive. I'm running Windows 7 64x Home Premium on a Toshiba Qosmio X505 laptop. I just got it back from the warranty repair center, where they replaced the hard drive and graphics fan & heatsink, and reloaded the factory windows version. Before I sent it out for repair, I used Windows Backup to create a backup of all my files on a Toshiba casio 500GB external USB drive (I had over 300 GB of files, so it was easier to use Windows Backup than drag and drop all the files, at least at the time). Now that I have the laptop back, I'm having trouble restoring my files. When I go to Control Panel-> Backup & Restore, a message appears in the restore section, saying "Windows could not find a backup for this computer." I've tried reconnecting the drive as well as restarting my computer, but to no avail. I can see and explore the files in My Computer, so I know the hard drive is properly connected. I appreciate any help you can give.

So I want to clone one external 2TB with another. So one drive is the main use one and another the backup one. So I copy everything over to backup and i store the backup at another house and then I start using the main: deleting and adding/editing files. What is the best software or whatever to allow me, after some time, synchronize/clone the externals again without deleting all on the backup drive and recopying? (main to backup) and make them clones again? ..Adding and deleting or replacing any nonidentical files.. Like where i can press a button on some software and it do the work for me.
Sorry if this is confusing

A:Best external to external hard drive synchronized backup plan?

There's a bunch of applications that can do that.

They all work pretty much the same way, but would differ in how easy they are to understand and configure---the interfaces would differ and the help files would differ.

I use FreeFileSync from sourceforge.net.

Others are Syncback, Folder Clone, Karen's Replicator, FBackup, Second Copy, and Synchromagic.

You should be able to configure them to do one or the other of the following:

1: If you delete or modify a file on the "original", it will also be deleted or modified on the backup.

2: If you delete a file on the "original", it will be retained on the backup. If you modify a file, both the modified and unmodified file will be retained on the backup.

It's up to you which choice you prefer. I use the first method, which is often called "mirroring"--one drive is an exact match of the other.

I am sure I have seen these a while ago and they cost around 10-15, though I can't remember what they are called or what they look like, so I'm not sure what to be looking for.

Can anyone help?

thanks,

gubar

I am new to this forum and to posting tech questions online in general so hopefully I can describe what's going on accurately.

My computer has had no problems to speak of lately. I had not synced my iPod nano in some time, maybe a month or two, so I plugged it in yesterday to sync it. I received the following message: "iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes." I have since discovered the problem has nothing to do with the iPod itself. The iPod plays all the music and podcasts that are currently on it just fine. When I plug it into my girlfriend's computer, her iTunes recognizes it just fine as my iPod and I was able to pull videos off of it.

I am now pretty certain the problem is with my USB drives. I have an external memory drive that I use to back up documents - I had not used this in some time either. Out of curiosity I plugged it in, and it's not working either. When I plug it in and turn it on, nothing pops up, and when I try to do certain actions to check on it, like open My Computer, the system freezes and I end up having to manually shut down the computer and restart.

I have gone through several threads on various forums and tried almost everything but nothing has resolved this issue. Some threads suggested that plugging in certain devices can mess up your USB drives like this, and a few weeks ago I did plug my girlfriend's printer ... Read more

Hi,

I'm trying to backup Win7 to an external HD that currently is used to backup mac. Can anyone help explain what I need to do to make this happen? I'm sure I'll have to format the ext HD then backup the mac using a different file format, but am unsure just what I'll have to do or how to do it.

TIA!

A:Backup to external HD that also has Mac backup on same drive

I assume the external drive is formatted HSF+. If you want to keep using it for the Mac, you can partition the drive with 1 partition HSF+ and the other partition NTFS for windows. Failing that, the Mac can read from but not write to NTFS.

Hey so it all started when I started receiving AHCI Port0 error when I turned on my pc, everything seemed find but I wanted to fix it so I checked different forums and now I think I broke my pc
I first reformatted my pc thinking it would fix the error showing up but it didn't, my pc worked fine but it was just the error that annoyed me and I just wanted to fix it

Then I checked forums online and people were talking about deleting and recreating raid array volumes, so I deleted raid array 1 and 0 and re made it as raid array0. it said it wouldn't delete the recovery partition on my hard drive and hopefully it hasn't because I thought that I can just reformat after I create the new array

This pic is when I was deleting the arrays
This pic is when I recreated the array
But now when I boot up my pc I still get this error
Which leads me to the bios when I press f2
When I exit out of bios I get this new error
Edit: When I press f12 when the system starts up with the dell logo I get this not sure what to do now
Now I can't even access windows or anything can someone please help? The pc is a Dell XPS 8100 if that helps

Hi
I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate connected to network with Server 2008 (R2).

I am trying to backup the System Image [only] to a share on the server without success:

[Window Title] Windows Backup: Troubleshooting Options

[Main Instruction] Check your backup

[Content] Windows Backup cannot read the backup destination.

[Try to run backup again] [Change backup settings]

[Expanded Information]
Backup time: 8/05/2016 6:20 PM
Backup location: \\Server2008\backup\
Error code: 0x8078006F

The backup location is a valid share on the server and is accessible (and read/writeable) from my Win7 machine. Both SYSTEM and Administrators have "Full control". When setting up the backup, the location is tested and a username and password requested - these are accepted (and wrong ones are not, so some sort of check is being carried out), however when I attempt to run the backup (either manually or on schedule) the backup runs briefly (a few %) then fails with the message "Windows backup did not complete successfully" then the message box as above. No files are created at the backup location.

A search of the web finds a lot of similar questions and a lot of wrong and useless answers. This has been an ongoing problem for some time, but I really would like to have a regular scheduled backup. Has anybody got any clues, please?

Regrettably I learned too late that Dell Backup & Recovery 'might' encounter problems in Windows 10 if a user did not update 'DBaR' version 1.7 before an upgrade from Win 8.1 to Win 10. I have a Dell Inspiron 3647.
When I only select a few files to backup (e.g., pics, docs, printer software and a few apps) it would backup to my 32 GB USB flash error free.
But when I try a significant back up -- e.g., 8 GBs -- I get a display after 20 minutes, or so, that the backup created an error. [head scratch]
Even something less challenging for DBaR like running a Factory Recovery Media backup resulted in the same error. Yet using the Windows 10 Control Panel Recovery app completed a backup error free.
I tried more than one USB flash, I ran Dell Update, defragged my hard drive, disabled firewall and AV protection. Nothing seemed to help.
Am I correct to assume that Dell Backup & Recovery 'might' encounter problems in Windows 10?
Sure would be nice to at least backup costly apps like Microsoft Office.

Hi. I am trying to perform a full PC Backup on Vista Service Pack 2.  I have a recently purchased Seagate Backup Plus 2TB drive which has 1.6TB free space.  When I do the normal 'Backup Files' option it backs up onto this drive no problem  When I then try to do a Complete PC Backup onto the same disk (size of backup estimted to be 67Gb), it bombs straight away, with the error message 'One of the backup files could not be created. (x08078002A)'. I have only performed a full backup once onto multiple DVDs which worked fine.  This backup however, is seriously out of date now. Could someone please assist? Thanks.

I'm about ready to consider this a bug.

Traditionally, I share a folder from my Desktop to my PC via SMB and it works perfect as can be. The HDD on the Desktop has PLENTY of space and is in NTFS format and not being used as a NAS.

I browse network to find the folder I want, there it is all ready to be used. I select and enter the same information (my live email and password, and also tried Desktop username/password) as I did with getting the folder to share in the first place.

I keep getting the error 0x80070544 which tells me that it's the network credentials.

There is only a grand total of one post on here that I can find that error code and it was never truly resolved. I don't know what I should do. I would despise using alternative software over something as trivial as this.

Any help would be GREATLY! appreciated.

I recently purchased a 329G backup device by Hitachi called Simple Tough. My intention is to be able to transfer files, photos etc., from my old laptop running Windows XP to a new laptop that I plan to purchase with Vista. I've done a full backup on the device but the company says it won't allow me to transfer the files to a Vista OS. I downloaded Microsoft Easy Transfer and did another backup but the device "E" drive does not show any files under the title "old computer". Is anyone familiar with this type of backup device and explain to me if I'm on the right track how to restore these files on a Vista laptop? Or, is this the wrong device for what I want to do?

Just had a major catastrophe with my PC and I'm looking for a new backup device that will have an option for me to schedule mu backups daily. I currently have a CD Burner but it's jus not cutting it.

I've looked into the new 750MB Iomega ZIP drive that comes with software which will allow me to schedule backups and I've also looked into some tape drives. These are my two economically viable options but I'd like to get an outside objective view on these two products as well as possibly some new ideas.

If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm also running 3 PC's on a newtork and I'd be backing up just data from all three so the size of the device media would not need to be that great. Just regular old word and excel files and such.

Thanks

I dont see any problems using on HD for both machines. The question comes in what kind of software are you going to use? If its the default backup items in Windows then you should be ok too. Im sure someone will be along to advise about different types of backup software to use on the machines.

I just did a backup (using File History) of files to an external HD. When I looked in the Folders on the HD, there were multiple copies of the same files; some with different dates, and others with the same dates but different ?file numbers. Can anyone tell me how to do a backup so that files are not duplicated. I'd also like to have files with changes overwrite the old file, provided that I haven't the file name. Thanks.

A:Backup to External HD

Hello Eweingarden,

It depends on how often you set File History to save copies of the files at step 7B in the tutorial below. If you like, you can change this at anytime.

In addition, you might also set for how long to "keep saved versions", and the "size of offline cache" in the same step 7.

Hope this helps,

I am running a home built Vista Ultimate machine with 2.5 ghz processor. I have 2 gigs of ram. It is a 32 bit system. I have three drives plus an external Western Digital drive with 500 gigs of storage capacity.

I did a complete system backup back the 6th of September which worked just fine. After that it successfully backed up each week.

I do have a complete system shadow copy but I made the mistake of deleting the previous backups. I thought I would be saving some space (stupid as I have a 500 gig!) but upon running a scan with AVG it showed it couldn't scan the backups.

Now I can't run a backup without it failing. It says I could try doing a new backup but when I do it fails.

Does anyone have any ideas on what I could do to reset this. I could wipe out everything on the external but it is looking for the last successful backup which isn't there.

Please help. Thanks!!!!

I have never known any backup device to need to update. Recently, I bought a new one which is WD My Passport and it asks to do an update every month. So far, it has done two and, both times, removed its shortcut icons from my desk top. Now it wants to do a third update and I worry about what it might remove.

Why would a backup device need to update? Is it because it is called an "external hard drive"?

Or, one more possibility: Because my ESET antivirus program was taking far too long to scan, ESET people suggested I disconnect the backup device while the scan was going on. They said it didn't need scanning since it held only what ESET has already scanned inside the computer.

Please, can anyone fill me in on the need for a backup device to need updating? Thank you.

A:Updating Backup device?

Hello hazel m!

The way you're describing it, it shouldn't be something to worry about.
Like it is said in the WD My Passport pdf user manual, messages for available updates can pop up, for which you'd have to click Update Software and follow the on-screen instructions for downloading and installing the software update. This software could be the firmware, or WD software.
Some of these updates can be checked for automatically (hence the pop up), like the WD SmartWare, depending on the setting you set up.
Which WD My Passport do you have? And are the updates any different from what I am describing?
The disappearing shortcut should be because of the device being external (plug and play) and after the update it refreshes, hence need of new shortcut.
Is there any other troubling issue occurring?

Cheers!

Have two different external hard drives and wondering if either/both are suitable as Back Up and Restore Devices For Windows 7..

1) I have a Western Digital 750GB passport usb portable hard drive.
It is formatted HFS+ with MacDrive...

*1A) Possible/definite issues using as Back Up Device when need to restore/repair, ect on Windows 7?
1B) Will be installing windows 7 on second PC soon. Can HFS+ drive be used to Install windows 7 Image/clone (from Laptop) on new fresh Hard Drive?
---
2) Second external is a network device (not quite a NAS?, but connected to Ethernet LAN port on my router) it is a Segate GoFlex Network Version...

2A) Are there issues with using external network HDD as a back up device?
2B) Possible/Likely issues accessing network device if using to restore back up on crashed/damaged or fresh Windows 7 OS and/or program/user data
*** meaning will network attached drives not even be accessible if windows is screwed up or during install on fresh HDD?

Not priority, but if anyone knows off top of head...
Segate goflex network external drive has a usb connection port on back...
I know segate sells 'usb adapters/cable KIT' for some stupid cost.
*Can I connect the external drive to my pc with a normal USB cable?
If so, what type of ends exactly? (ie Male to micro/"B", whatever?)?

Thanks again everybody for support!

A:HFS+ USB HDD backup device indows 7

I'll try to answer part of your questions. Windows will not install from a HSF+. As far as I know it has to be FAT or NFTS. Mac can read NFTS but not write to it, but windows cannot read HSF+.
As far as the Network drive. ASFIK, it depends on which version of windows 7 you get. Home premium will not back up to a network. Professional and Ultimate will. Home Premium will back up to USB or eSATA. As far as the adapter for the Seagate GoFlex, check Amazon, they sell them much cheaper than Seagate.

Most of you know that you don't really know if your backup device is really going to work until you lose everything and then you have to do the backup thing. Well, it happened to me a few weeks ago and I am here to report it to you. Something or somehow I corrupted my registry and could not get my win2k pro to boot - only a BSOD. It happened while my wife was on the computer and scanning data at the same time and she swears she did nothing - right famous last words. Well, anyways i had to call my computer guy to come look at this one because it would boot up to the windows screen and then crash. He was able to use my win2k disk, but after the repair - all the desktop was gone except what looked like a fresh install. So I installed my Retrospect software that comes with the Maxtor One Touch. Then I fired up the retrospect and it immediately detected the maxtor. Next, I selected the restore function and it started running. I left and when I came back, I rebooted and voila - everything was there. So the message is if you want a safe reliable easy way to save your data, then the Maxtor One Touch may be for you especially if you are not a technophile who has lots of time to restore things off of disks or floppies. I set my maxtor to backup every AM at 0300 because of what happened. Hope this helps someone out there from experiencing that sinking feeling when you have lost a lot of important data...doc

Hi

This problem has really got me stuck!

DETAILS:

Dell D600 Laptop
XP Professional SP1

PROBLEM:

A user logs onto the pc (the owner). He connects the usb device to the laptop. The pc appears to recognise it (hard light flashes and hourglass appears for a bit).
If he looks under My Computer the device is not shown. Under Device manager the USB Mass storage device is shown and is working properly.

The user logs off and I log on.
The device is shown under My Computer!

I renamed the users profile to XXXXXX.old (x being his username). User logged on again and the pc created a new profile. Looked under My Computer and the device was there. Great! Copied all his data over from the old profile and ended up rebooting anyway. Check My Computer and the device was gone! ????
It seems the reboot "killed it" even though USB mass storage device is shown under Device Manager and working fine.

If I Logon I can see the device. If I reboot and logon I can still see it.

Man this is driving me nuts. I've tried several backup devices, all the same issue.
Any ideas?

A:Backup Device Not Responding?

Gerry,
It is probably something very simple.
Make sure there is enough room left on the disk and it is not write protected.
Run Scandisk on the floppy to see if the media is ok.
Reformat the floppy and try again.
Also check that your CMOS settings show the correct type of floppy drive (1.44 MB or 720 KB for instance).

I use an external hdd for data due to frequent carrying. Make backup manually once per 14 days on an other external storage. How can this be a way to relieve automatic incremental backups, so that data on both disks are up to date?
It operates some sw this style?:
1/ primary backup data to another disk
2/ after a certain time comparison of both disks
3/ update backup - only new or changed files (incremental backup)
I tried Beyond Compare, which is great for some users. Especially for someone who wants to have total control over the process. After all, it is more efficient for me to somehow automate= more simplify.
Thanks for the tip

A:Backup external drive

Your topic appears to me to be the same question as your earlier topic here
http://forums.techguy.org/all-other-software/1146475-backing-up-external-portable-hdd.html

when a couple of suggestions were offered to you
That said if the OS if Windows 7 then the windows backup - will
After you create your first backup, Windows Backup will add new or changed information to your subsequent backups. If you're saving your backups on a hard drive or network location, Windows Backup will create a new, full backup for you automatically when needed.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/back-up-files#1TC=windows-7
It all depends on your requirements and whether you are looking for free software or are prepared to buy.
Many free versions are perfectly adequate for the average user.
The paid for versions offer more options of course.
One of the easiest to use is Easeus Todo
http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/free-backup-software-features.htm
the free version offers both incremental and differential
there is also as you can see a comparison between the free and the paid for version.
The only drawback, as like with most free software, is the popup add when using it for asking you to consider the paid for version, but that is the case with most free software

My problem: Recently (I've had this configuration for several months) when I exit Quicken (2005 deluxe), and back up to my external HD it removes all existance of the HD from the computer and removes Quicken from the computer. both still remain but the HD is not in "my computer". it is still in "programs" but when I click on it nothing is there. Quicken is still there, but it acts like it has never been installed-click on it and it goes into the initial setup mode. When I reset my external HD (uninstall USB, then power, then reinstall) it contains my Quicken backup, which will, then, allow me to import to quicken and it's all good till I try to backup again-same thing happens.
my question--any ideas which is the problem? The external HD is recording the internal HD, but we don't use it for anything except backing up Quicken

Thanks,

Les

I move my laptop between two locations with docking stations that have eSATAp(owered) ports, and I'm thinking of getting a 240-480GB SSD to carry between the two locations, to make backups on i.e. daily documents and periodic image backups. What I like about this idea is that I can just have a single eSATAp cable at each location, and carrying the 2.5" SSD along with the laptop is trivially easy and less dangerous than a HDD (e.g. if dropped).

My question has to do with use of an SSD in this scenario i.e. are there any down-sides as an external device? Does "TRIM" work with an eSATA drive or don't I care about that?

Any thoughts are welcome.

I decided to try out this new device called a NDAS (no not an NAS) but an NDAS. Network Direct Attached Storage. Anyway it says it is the fastest method of transferring data. I have tried a direct connection through a gig lan and it transferred 35GB of info in an 8 hour period. I then hooked up an external hdd through esata and it did 35GB in less than 5 minutes. Can anyone explain what is happening? Am I doing something wrong? Also, this hdd runs at 52 idle in this enclosure and 35 in others.

Dad and I both want to backup to a 500gb Maxtor External Harddrive.
We have partitioned the harddrive into two. One partition for each of us.
We would like to do a full clone of each of our harddrivesand place them oon the harddrive. WE want the clone that goes on the harddrive ,to be useful(not in some random compressed format that we can't get to).

Also. My laptop has a wireless internet connection that connects to a router connected to the internet. The router also connects to dads computer which has the external harddrive.
Is there a way to backup my harddrive using the criteria above via our wirelesss connection.

I have lost my laptop once and I don't want it to happen again.
Please tell me if you know of a simple way to go about this.

Is it possible to make a full clone of the harddrive that i wouldn't have to clone the whole harddrive each time. ( if you know what i mean) So it just updates the files each time.

A:How to Backup to External Harddrive.

There are two ways of doing this, manually by copying the files required or try using cobian backup, the link is in the free software list.

I would not recommend backing up via wireless as this will take a long time.

Hi,

I know this question has been asked before, "What NAS to buy?" My Network consists of:

Windows 7Pro Desktop,
Windows 8.1 Laptop,
Linux based Satellite receiver,
HP Photosmart Printer.

I want to download, and view later films from XBMC or TsMedia. I have shortlisted 3 NAS Enclosures:

Synology, WD and Qnap

Any/all advice appreciated.

A:What NAS/External backup drive?

No problem guys,

I have sorted which NAS to buy. An Asustor, it has all the Apps and pre-installed software I will need for my purpose.

Hello,

I am planning to backup my hard drive each week to an external hard drive using Retrospect Express v6.5 (it came free with the external HD). Should I keep this backup drive turned off when not in use to extend its life and protect against viral corruption?

Also, has anyone had good or bad experiences with Retrospect Express? Its a few years old now and I was wondering if there was a better (more user friendly) option available for free download.

Thank you!

First time with an external HD backup and all seemed to go well. I followed the prompts during the preparation of the backup and burned a "system repair disk" at the conclusion.

Question 1: For scheduled backups, does the data need to be erased from the ext HD prior to subsequent backups or does it write over the earlier data?

Question 2: If my system backups are scheduled every two weeks, do I plug in my ext HD the day prior to the scheduled backup in order for it to do the job automatically?

Thanks for your help.

A:2 External HD Backup questions

1. It depends on the kind of backup and, possibly, the size of the external drive.

2. Again, it depends on the kind of backup.

What kind of backup are you doing? Imaging using Windows imaging? Imaging using a third party program? Cloning? File copy? Something else I'm forgetting?

Btw, you are to be commended for going to the trouble of backing up your computer. I wish more people were as wise as you.

Hi All
I do not know a vast amount when it comes to networks...but I have a usb2 280gb hard drive (freecom) and want to configure it to be a backup drive. There are 25 XP pro pc's. The server is running win2000 (one pdc..one backup pdc, a fileserver and a mail server) We have BT Broadband 512k.
Is there software that I need to use...or can I set a daily backup from what I have.
Hope I have made sence!!...any advice greatly welcomed!!

A:set external drive as backup

Lot's of ways to do this.

One might be to create a separate directory for each user. Then on those 25 computers, create a simple batch file to copy whatever you want to the appropriate directory. This can then either be scheduled to run at a specified time or when the user clicks on a shortcut to it on the desktop. I have users that each prefer their own method.

You might also schedule something from the server but this might mean you would need to set up a lot of shares on each computer.

I've tried searching for this but everything that comes up doesn't get to the problem. Also not sure where to post this.

My WD Passport Ext. HD can't see the Desktop or the files on it and I don't know where in the depths of Win 10 to find it.
The Passport software only sees what is in "C:" not what is in "This PC"

Attached is a screenshot. Top left is the Properties of a file on the Desktop Path is C:\Users\ Gomer \Cookies\Desktop
Top right is the same file Path is This PC> Desktop

Bottom left shot is This PC> C:> Users > Gomer and the folders below go from Contacts to Documents without Cookies or Desktop.

Bottom right Passport sees the same thing and thus does NOT backup anything on the Desktop?

So my question to all of you wizards is where does Win 10 hide the Desktop folder so I can access it to back it up?

Thanks Muchly for your help

A:External backup can't see Desktop

Hi.
The position of the Desktop is normally C:\Users\[username]\Desktop
However, if you have moved your user files, then you have to look for the actual desktop files on the drive you pointed it to.

For instance, all my user files have been pointed to another internal hard drive called H:. In order for me to backup my desktop files, I have to find the Desktop folder which actually points to my H drive.

If this is not the case for you, maybe this tutorial might help:

I have a WD Passport for a backup of my entire system.

I remove this HDD & put it away for safe keeping once the backup has been updated.

But now I want to encrypt this incase it falls into the wrong hands.

I would like 128 bit encryption & prefer to be able to just enter a password in & it unlocks the entire HDD when I plug it into any computer to access all files like a normal HDD.

What's the best program for this?

Thanks.

hi how can i make a backup/ system image for my internal and external hard drives at the same time? thanks

A:backup internal/external

First you will need often a larger drive then you have for the OS and other drives internal as well as external. If you have one 500gb OS host drive, a second 500gb internal, and then two 500gb external drives you would likely need a 2tb drive to cover the size of any image created.

The program to handle this would like be Acronis True Image as one of the best paid for programs or one that will include multiple drives into one main image backup. Others like Paragon, Macrium's Reflect, the older Norton Ghost are some of the more popular programs.

With a few those either have free versions as well as paid for or like Paragon offer a free version. Paragon is a free open source program there. Also drive manufacturers like Western Digital will offer a free version of Acronis TI. Seagate also offers the rebranded Disk Wizard(Acronis under a different name) free as well for their customers.

Lan Connection is 1000mbs only if both ends are GIGABIT. So the NDAS has to have a gigabit card and your desktop has to have a gigabit card. Otherwise it's only 100mb

Esata is 3000mb

I want to set up an external HDD, connected to a wireless hub, to be used for backup. This hub is used by 2 or 3 people during the week, and I want to set up automatic backup for each of them to the HDD.

Because the HDD will be in a semi-public area, it wll be relatively easy for it to to pinched. While there is not much I can do about that, what i would like to do is to encrypt the backed up data.

What i want to be able to do is to establish the HDD as encrypted, and somehow register the machines to it such that a password is not needed every time they need to back up. If the users need to do this, they will not carry out the backup, and I want them to do this.

I suspect that a NAS drive will provide this functionality but this is a very expensive solution, and my reading of WD and Seagate products SEEMS to imply that their encryption requires a password every time user wishes to access the drive for backup etc.

Is there some software that I can install on the machines to give me NAS-like functionaity (that is log in in the background), or are there any easily available USB connected HDD that I ca buy that will not break the bank.

Thanks in anticipation

A:Secure Backup to external HDD

Hi there

Wireless backup will be a DOG unless your backup volume is SMALL and users don't backup at the same time.

You might consider using STORAGE SPACES on your target machine -- that way you can aggregate several SMALL volumes into a single large data space with some sort of protection too.

Wifi backup though - forget it !!! 20 GB will take forever at a typical wifi speed - remember also that UPLOAD which is effectively what your users are doing is often 10 times slower than download. Is YOUR system also up to it.

Hi there !
I have just bought an external HD western digital drive "My Book" with 1 TB of full capacity.
Usb connected with my pc, windows find it correctly.
I could pass data of several sizes with no problem but when I try to copy and paste some avi video files of 7 gigas a legend appears telling me that there is no space on my unit....but I have really 700 gigas free !!!!!
I realise that the external WD drive is in Fat32 and as you know the XP is in NTFS.
But...all data of several sizes can pass with no trouble but the video files always appear the legeng of disk full......
please can anybody help me with this? thank you very much

A:backup external HD failled

you probably need to format your ext h/d to NTFS as i think FAT32 only takes 4gb at a time, or break down your videos to a smaller size.

You would have a better time using Macrium instead of Windows backup, have a look at this tutorial at the link below and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

To answer the question, you can store an image externally though be sure to create a separate file for it, don't just let it "go where it wants" to go.

A:Backup to External drive

Welcome to SevenForums.

Which program do you use for backing up? Keep your data in a seperate partition and backups in a seperate partition on your external drive.

( I use Paragon Hard Disk Manager Suite 11 to back up to an external drive partition exclusively earmarked for Backups. That way I can monitor and ensure that there is always sufficient space for backups.

I also keep a copy of the most recent backup on a seperate partition (not on the System Partition C drive) in the internal drive and run the WinPE Rescue CD from my bootable pendrive to restore should there be a need, without connecting the external drive.)

Hi all,

I'm planning to backup my hard drive and hope that someone could recommend an external backup solution, either an external hard drive or a regular hard drive in an enclosure. What would be the best way to achieve a safe and secure backup? Also, please share any good/bad experiences when using those recommended storage products.

BTW, currently I'm leaning towards the side of Western Digital (since I am currently using their drives) but feel free to recommend me another backup option.

Thanks

Would there be a problem in getting an external HD running off USB port that I could back up internal HD running XP home addition? I am worried about being able to boot off this drive and have all files copied to the new disk. To copy files can one just drag c:/ to new drive and have all hidden files copied or does one need special copying software to make this function as a totally full back up system? Appreciate your input. Would appreciiate any brand names for hardware/software that you know have worked this way in the past. Plysne

I used W7's backup utility to back up my files onto my WD external HDD and canceled in the middle of it. After I canceled the backup I manually deleted the shadow copies of my backup on my WD HDD so that I can restart. I noticed however that my external HDD has less free space than it did before I even started the backup. I made sure I deleted my backups and I also cleared the recycle bin in the WD HDD.

I went even further to add up all of my files on the HDD and it only added up to 571GB and when I look at the properties of the drive, it tell me that I have used up 571GB for "other files" yet I still have 178GB of "system image."
Where is this system image restored and how do I delete it to make up more space on my drive? I set up my computer to show hidden folders but I do not see this system image anywhere.

Hi, I have spent the last 6 hours or so backing up about 480GB of data onto a 1TB external hard drive, only for it to tell me that: "The backup was not successful. The error is: There is not enough free space on the backup storage location to back up the data. (0x80780048)."

What is most peculiar is that all the folders and files I selected have been backed up and are restorable from the backup.

My hunch is that after the backup completed backing up my selected folders it failed because the 'include a system image' checkbox was ticked (by default) and there obviously wasnt enough space left for an entire system image (800GB+).

I just unchecked this and ran the backup again (it just added a few new files I had saved while the original was running) and it has worked fine and the event log now says 'backup completed successfully'.

Can I just check that my hunch is indeed correct here, I want to be extra sure that the error was just because there wasnt enough space for the system image and it hasnt borked anything else up.

Thanks for any help!

Hello 1gouravgg, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I find that saving the downloaded driver installation files from the device or PC manufacturer to a drive other than the one Windows is installed on a great way to back them up. This way they are quickly available to install as needed.
