Thunderbird version (20080421)..
I cannot send large attachment 9MB.
I send it easily with Outlook Express.
The send dialog shows from 87% to 97% then I get an error message that it can't connect to SMTP.
I increased the timeout time to 9999 seconds no change.
I have disabled my anti virus, firewall and anti spy ware. Even though the exact same settings don't disallow Outlook from working.
Obviously it is not my ISP.

am using windows 98. want to change montior to flat screen. tried a NEC but was told by NEC my 98 couldn't support 1024 x ?, so got a KOGI that had been hooked to an old 95. screen is fuzzy and windows are so large i can't reach the apply or ok buttons. in display there is a minus (-) in front of display adapters; the subtitle is NVIDIA Aladdin TNT2 and a minus (-) in front of monitors with the subtitle of GVISIONL5QX-TIA. Should the display adapters and monitors subtitles be the same? I think the NEC was NVIDIA and I think the KOGI is the GVISION. Any suggestions of Annie?

Hello, I recently started getting a black screen when trying to turn on my laptop, a Sony Vaio running Windows 10. I am unable to download the DM log collector tool since I cannot use my computer at all. It stays on the black screen even if I let it sit for hours. It's possible that I backed up a Windows 10 file when originally upgrading from WIN7 but I'm not sure and if so, it would be on an external hard drive. What can I do? Please help. Thank you so much.

Hey everyone, this is my first post on this site, hopefully not my last :)

Well my problem started tonight, I turn on my desktop, running core 2 duo and Vista, an I get to the vista login screen and my monitor goes on standby, Viewsonic 22" widescreen, I turn it off and turn it back on, everything is fine. This is just minor problem and didn't really bother me. Once logged in, I notice my icons, fonts, toolbars and start menu are all too large. I go to display settings and check resolution etc.. It is all fine!

I've gone through device manager and checked the drivers and monitor and everything seems too be fine. I have also scanned for spyware/viruses and its all clean. Kinda in a dilemma here and any help will be great!

I brought my sister's compaq presario 5250/128 ram/ K-2 Duron processor to my house to do some maintanence, when I connected it to my monitor the icons were huge and the pages were too big to see past 3/4 down the page. In other words, words like 'ok' 'cancel' 'start' were blocked from view and unaccessable. I went into setting and tried to change the resolution to the right side but it would not move. So I removed the video adapter (in device manager) and rebooted and when it came back up it was the same way. My sister needed the pc back, so I sent it back to her house, just hoping that it would look normal on their monitor and of course it didn't. Before she brought it over to my house it was fine she said the icons were not like this, but now they are. I did not do anything to it except hook it up to my monitor, I couldn't even do any maintenance, the display was so awkward. At their house, I had them go into settings and again the slider would not go to the right, to make the icons smaller.
*Forgot, it's windows 98
Anyone have any suggestions, my sister and her husband are freaking out.

Hi alank950,

All these settings are automatically stored by Windows to remember its previous size. What you should do is:

1. Open the application you wish to have maximized.
2. Maximize the window, or choose the size you want.
3. Close the application correctly (File > Exit).

If the auto-maximize button doesn't do it, try manually setting the size and then closing it properly.

I have the young fellow from next door's small 10" laptop an e-Machine eM350 with an Intel Atom N450 @ 1.66Ghz and 1GB RAM running a 32bit Basic 7 OS.

Have tried to get the resolution down to a level where everything fits on the screen for example the Google search page is so large the search window sits on top of the taskbar just about. The res is 1024x600 and I have tried to reset it but the only option is 800x600 and changing it is pointless as it defaults back to the 1024.

As it stands it is extremely exasperating to use as the opened Google page is frankly unusable as the bars at the top are huge taking up neraly a quarter of the screen and the taskbar which I have got as small as I can is still way too big. Thhe other thing that has got me beat is if I open internet options to set Google as the home page and the next tab I cannot get to the apply button - I can drag it up using the top bar and the up arrow but as soon as I let one go to apply the whole thing just drops back to where it was.

Any ideas please as have run out myself.

Hi, I wouldn't really classify this as a Windows 7 issue, but I don't know where else to post this. I recently bought a cheap TV (24" Orion) and decided it would be nice to have a second monitor for my laptop, however it doesn't quite work the way I would like it. I have my laptop connected to the TV with an HDMI cable. Anyways, I am not really sure how to explain it other than a pictorial representation, so I attached a picture to approximately show the problem. On the new TV, the edges are all cut-off and it gets annoying when I drag something to make it full-screen, then I have a difficult time dragging the bar or using the buttons/ tabs, etc. in general. (It's worse than shown in the picture).

Are there any sort of drivers or programs I can download to fix this? I just checked and downloaded all of my latest graphic drivers.

Any good solution would be immensely appreciated.

A:New TV-monitor Resolution Too Large for Screen/ Image Being Cut-Off

What is the make and model # of your laptop? Go to the manufacturers Support/Download drivers site type in your make and model # and download the latest Video Driver. After you done installing, Go to the Video cards Control Panel either by clicking the icon in the task bar, or by clicking it in Control Panel and change the resolution for one that works for the TV. You may have to create a Custom Resolution.

Hi there
I've been switching around between W7 / W8 / W8.1 for a while and all 3 have things to both like and dislike.

However one of the features that gets most people who are W7 die hards is the desire to retain the standard menu.

I used to think this too until I booted Windows 7 up with a very large 72 inch LCD monitor -- the menu looks absolutely HIDEOUS on a screen of this size !!! -- a small customised menu would be far better say like a custom toolbar with the XP small setting type of display.

(BTW it wasn't my monitor -- can't afford one of those yet - but was able to test one for a few days !!).

Is there any way to reduce this sheer waste of screen real estate. !!! Small size menu for example.

People these days are buying several monitors often quite large one's -- so I'm in favour of some new type of GUI -- I don't like the scrolling in W8 but W7's menu on a large monitor also is getting to be "Not fit for purpose". A flexible USER custom menu IMO would be the best option - but there's no command to create and launch a user defined toolbar from the start -- if there is please any Windows programmer post one and I'd be really grateful.

A:W7 Menu lovers -- It's HIDEOUS on a 60 CM large screen.

Can you post a picture? It sounds like a resolution or scaling issue but it's hard to tell without actually seeing it.

I am using windows XP with setting of 800 X 600 pixels. Most web pages in IE and emails in OE open too large for my screen and I must use the slider bar at the bottom to read the full page. Is there a setting somewhere to make these pages to open to size of my screen?

Thank You, tlh99

A:Solved: Pages open too large for screen

Many web designers, including myself, tend to ignore the 800x600 resolution as it tends not to be used very much these days, and its hard to create a site that looks good using 800x600 as a base.

Some sites will be "liquid" where the width is based on percentage not pixels, so the site will change width depending on your resolution.

Unfortunatly there isnt much that can be done on the web site front, other than increasing your resolution to atleast 1024x786 if you can.

As for the emails, does this happen with all emails? Or just the ones which are mainly made up out of images.

IT APPEARS FROM THE BEGINNING WHEN THE POWER IS ON. I can't take a screen shot of this bar! It doesn't work with Ctrl+Alt+Print screen. In screen shot, everything is normal(NO BAR). So, i think this is not a graphic problem. It covers the whole start menu bar. So, i take a photo manually with a camera. Here it is:

Pls help me! It's very annoying!
And thank you in advance~

First post here on the SevenForums! I'm only saving the tough ones for you guys! Here's the problem:

My client's computer was infected with a virus obtained via Facebook. I removed this and multiple other infections (and I'm pretty thorough with my scanning). She gets it back, starts working on it, and apparently her devices and printers icons are blank. Not missing, like with a "blank page" icon, just... blank. Here's the kicker: it only happens with large and extra large icons. It also happens with normal folder icons. When I change it to medium or lower, they come back. I've tried rebuilding the icon cache database several times, tried sfc /scannow, tried chkdsk, tried uninstalling any recent updates, etc... There have been no hardware changes, the hard drive has been tested as good (no bad sectors), her dual monitors are at a sane resolution, and I'm confident that the viruses has been removed. Trust me -- I've tried all the obvious stuff I can think of. Thanks and Good luck!

Edit: Also, I did about 30 minutes of searching through previous threads. Couldn't find a thing, but I could have missed it...

Well you probably pulled some icon cache files off that were infected but also had the L and XL icons. If sfc didnt work you could try a repair install. It will re-install only the files with different hash marks.

Last night Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (Eval Build 7100) was trying to do an update and failed. Tonight when I turned on, it said it could not start and was attempting repairs. When it started Thunderbird was gone!

Thank goodness, when I checked, my mail files are still here.

Hope this won't happen after I install the shiny new Windows 7 I bought today.

Your thoughts? Win7 problem, Thunderbird problem, or compatability problem? Or just plain unlucky (that would go with the rest of my day today)?

A:Windows 7 ate my Thunderbird

It was the result of a failed upgrade... Windows 7 does not like the taste of thunderbird and would not voluntarily consume one... Be sure to backup everything you value before you attempt the next installation....A clean install is recommended over an upgrade... Good Luck and welcome to SevenForums...

I am currently trying to make a copy of the files on my laptop to an external drive but after 1 Gb of data is transferred the status box when copying stops and doesn't seem to be copying over any further files. When I try to cancel the process it does not register that I have pressed cancel and I have to shut off my laptop manually, waiting a few seconds before turning it back on.

I have uninstalled avast believing that it might be causing an issue with the transfer but the result is still the same.

Recently after a failed attempt it has rendered my hard drive back to an ntfs unreadable state due to error code 0x80070570 .

Any help to resolve either issue would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hi RM2007 !

What's the maximum display resolution you can set in the display properties ? You probably need to update your video drivers.

Your computer is pretty old and there doesn't seem to be any drivers for XP available from Dell's website.

Found these drivers from Ati's website : Yours should be the second one (under Rage Pro).

If your video card has the standard 4MB memory then once the drivers are installed you'll be able to set your display resolution to 1024 x 768 (85Hz).

About the run command, check that it's checked to appear in the sart menu properties :

I just purchased a computer with Windows 7 on it for a colleague. Her computer needs to be reformatted. It is cooked. I hooked everything up and thought (very operative term) I did the install correctly. I downloaded Thunderbird so she could set up her email accounts. The problem is that some email accounts were accessible while others were not. The accounts that are not allowing us to set up give a message about either not recognizing a password, or not communicating with the server. Would there be a security setting on Windows 7 that is stopping me? If so how do I go there? We set all POP and SMTP as they were on the old computer that used XP and ran Thunderbird. I called the company that runs the mail server and they report no problems. I can access the same email accounts from my XP OS but not with Win7. I am a neophyte, so please be kind. Computer is turned ON. ;)Many thanks,Moloki

I just moved into a new Thinkpad T440 running Windows 7. I am using Thunderbird, Chrome, Carbonite and Avira, just as I did under XP before.

Clicking on a Thunderbird folder will sometimes cause an endless delay (spinning circle which was formerly the hourglass)
The only solution seems to be closing Thunderbird for 15-30 minutes.

I also keep getting "can't write to folder" messages when trying to receive messages or when a message filter tries to move a message to another folder.

Sometimes, the only way that seems to resolve this is to reboot.

Thunderbird will then work for several hours and then the can't write or the spinning freeze will then recur.
Since this is a new machine, I have plenty of free disk space.

The only other applications I run are Word and sometimes Excel.

Hi all,
I'm wondering what 'catches' there might be to using the Windows mail. I'm from a Mac background, and am trying to get my head around the best way to do stuff on PC.

I've currently got Thunderbird and Firefox set up on my PC (Compaq laptop) but just feel a bit overwhelmed by culture shock, and so might stick with them for a while.

(Just getting to know Thunderbird was tricky enough but Windows mail looked too locked into all that Windows live stuff and I'm just not up for a whole new social contacts list thing at the moment).

What else should I be aware of as a mac to Windows7 newcomer?

A:Who uses Windows mail V Thunderbird?

I tried Windows Live Mail and generally agree with you about that "Live" stuff. I went with Tbird and have no regrets.

As a Mac guy, you should know:

Make sure you keep Windows updated through Windows Update. Not necessarily for all available updates, but for the critical and important ones. Be more selective about anything classified less than "important". Don't blindly install new drivers if things are running OK.

Get a good antivirus/malware/spyware setup going. A good start would be Microsoft Security Essentials. Some say that and the Windows Firewall is all you need. Others will tell you that you should have more than that. Opinion is divided.

Backup your personal files--I assume you did that on a Mac.

You have exposure to many more apps than you would have on a Mac. Many of them are freeware. All I have actually spent money on is Windows, Office, and Photoshop.

Get wise to Windows System Restore capability. It will bail you out frequently.

PC hardware is cheaper and you will be able to do your own upgrading and maintenance.

After upgrading to windows 10 I added my account to "mail" in windows 10. I didn't like it, and had trouble using the "sync" function but eventually got it synced and folders rebuilt and files over to it. I have now installed Thunderbird and like that program much better and have imported all my files and folders and contacts.
Question: Can I now remove my account from "mail" in windows 10 ? Or will that wipe all info I imported to and using with Thunderbird? And second, how to I remove that account in mail, I don't see that option listed anywhere. Thank in advance for any help or suggestions.

A:Accounts in windows 10 and Thunderbird

I do not use the Mail app.

From what I understand, if you are using your Microsoft Account to sign in, you cannot delete the email account.
You will need to sign in on a local account in order to do that.

That's what I was told.

Hi, I'm new here. Since a week ago, my computer using large amount of RAM for some Windows processes like explorer.exe and winlogon.exe. When I start the computer, it is working fine, but then after 1 to 2 hours, it use more RAM even if I dont do anything.

Here is the list of the most notable processes
-explorer.exe = 50.000 K to 150.000 K
-wisptis.exe = 20.000 K to 40.000 K (there are two processes, I suspect one of them is a virus)
-winlogon.exe = 40.000 K to 150.000 K

Is it normal or it is definitely a virus? How to reduce these RAM usage?

A:Windows processes using large RAM

I suspect one of them is a virus

You are probably correct in assuming there is a virus, as these 3 processes are a part of the Windows OS (Wisptis.exe is a system process which comes included with Microsoft Office Suite driver for Wacom Tablet, Windows ink services and tends to run alongside Adobe Acrobat Reader) Winlogon is the logon service where you logon to Windows with your user name and password.
You can also run Process Explorer to get a better handle on what is doing this.

A:How do I 'ZIP' a large folder in Windows 7

Launch Windows Explorer. Select all the files/folder you want to compress (you can also use CTRL+click to add more files). Right-Click > Send To > Compressed Folder. The ZIP will be located in the folder you are workin in. There is a tutorial if you need more info : Zip a File or Folder - How To

Here are screenshots of how it's done with the built-in zip feature :

If you want more features though, I recommend 7-Zip. It's lightweight, has a LOT of options, usually has better compression on ZIP (or you can use the 7z format which compresses even more), and is open-source : 7-Zip. It will add a context menu accessible via Right-Click in Explorer.

Here are screenshots of the same process with 7-zip :

I was just wondering whether Windows would control how Thunderbird sent desktop notifications?

If I email a message to the account set up with thunderbird it appears instantly(ish) in the programme but if I'm in another programme and send a message I don't get any pop up notification from thunderbird....

Hope I've phrased this OK!

A:Thunderbird Notifications - Windows setting?

To receive new incoming mail notifications from Thunderbird:

Thunderbird must be running in the background (I run minimized).
Thunderbird must be set to check for incoming emails periodically (I think the default is every 10 minutes).
Optionally, I would set the Taskbar to show the Thunderbird icon and notifications.
Once done, a new incoming email will show a visual and audible alert.
Note: This notification will not be instantaneous because it is dependent on the query interval.
I just tested it and it works fine.

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

Windows 10 is a brand new OS and Thunderbird may not be fully patched or updated for it.

Who is your service provider for email?

When I launch Thunderbird 17.0.4 email from Windows 8 desktop everything launches fine. When I send an email to gmail it stays at Status: mail sent successfully. Progress Bar says 100% (it stays here for a while). Eventually the screen went to normal and the email was sent and received. When I send an email from my main Roadrunner account to my second Roadrunner account. (These are POP accounts) I get status: mail sent successfully. Eventually the screen went to normal and the email was never sent or received. If I click on cancel I get the message There was an error saving the messag t.retry? Nothing was sent. Any help here. All this works fine in Windows 7 Pro.

A:ThunderBird Email Problems with Windows 8

So, are you using Thunderbird to access your POP3 Roadrunner account? If so, how do you know the email was not sent? Is it still stuck in your outbox? Also, have you tried accessing Roadrunner via webmail (both accounts) to verify the state of the message in question? In summary, if you are using Thunderbird to access gmail and Roadrunner via POP3, and only the gmail is working, I'd start looking more on the Roadrunner side for a solution. FYI, I use Thunderbird 17.0.4 to access POP3 Comcast and gmail and they both work fine under Win 8. Good luck.

PS I did see that all works fine under Win 7 BTW; however, the Win 7 circumstances are not clear so I basically ignored that statement.
