System Check Utility

Q: System Check Utility

Hi all, I just re-formatted my Hard drive and Now that I have everything up again, i was trying to connect to the internet, however the system isn't recognizing my Ethernet card. I don't have the disk anymore as I haven't had to do a format in about 5 years. Windows won't even add their own drivers for some reason.

I was looking for a utility that can go through all my Hardware and maybe tell me what the name of the Ethernet card is so I can download the drivers from the internet to this computers floppy drive then upload onto my comp.

Thanks for the help!

Hi,
I've tried running microsoft chkdsk from the command line and the result I got after this is the volume is clean but this message still shows if I try to check for errors using PowerQuest Partition Magic 8.05.What can I do? Is it possible that this is a hardware malfunction, like bad hard drive? Or is there any other way to fix it?And is it possible, that my Windows XP has troubles from time to time to start-up because of this error message?Do you think it will affect my PC performance or others if I choose to ignore it?

I would appreciate every help I can get.

This is a repeat of my same question from 2 days ago. I haven't gotten any answers and would like to ask it again.

I'm running XP Home and try to run CHKDSK /F at least once every three days, to keep the disk in good shape and trouble free. I also defragment on a daily basis.

When DSKCHK /F runs, it's supposed to display a blue screen with a progress dialogue. That dialogue is helpful, because it also indicated which files are errant.

For some reason, I've stopped seeing that blue screen and when I run CHKDSK /F lately, the monitor remains black.

Can anyone offer advice on how I can fix this, other than reformatting?

THANKS !!!!!!!!

Hi, I was running Spyware Doctor and a window came up on the toolbar at the bottom of the screen that a file is corrupted and I need to run the check disk utility. Can someone tell me how to do that?

Thanks!

A:How To Run The Check Disk Utility

Go to Start...Run...and type in "chkdsk.exe /r" (without the quotes) and presse Enter.

A black window will pop up saying that it can't do it now. Then it'll ask you if you want to do it on the next reboot. Answer "Y" and press Enter

Then reboot your system - Checkdisk will run when the system reboots.

I have an old Dell desktop about 6 years old.Started running very slow so i cleaned it up of spyware and sort, was very little improvement. Its a dual boot setup with xp and kubuntu. So I eneded up booting Kubuntu and sure enough it barely runs as well, when it didnt run bad,so i have some failing hardware.

I need a good utility that will check all my hardware that gives a decent report to its findings.Preferably a bootable cd as within the operating systems take a couple minutes at times just to open a folder.

I like to do what I can to keep my system running smoothly
Presently I use CCleaner and ATF to trash unwanted files.
However
The Windows Disk Clean up utility says I can increase my storage capacity by 80Gig.
I am a bit concerned about using Disk Clean up because it may get rid of something I need. I know how to use the utility but how should I proceed without screwing up my system. Can someone who know and uses this utility give me some guidance on how to best approach this? The utility does not tell you exactly what you are deleting.
I am using Vista
One of the reasons why I am doing this is because I have some pretty long boot up times. I am doing everything I can to speed things up.
Thanks
other info
Suspended/Paused File Cleaner @ 4Gig

Former Windows Installation @ 72.1 Gig (I did have XP Pro on this mother board before but I thought I wiped it clean)

Temporaly Windows Intall Files @ 3.8Gig

The others do not go over 1MB, so i do not list them unless you really want to know.

thanks for your help in advance

A:Check Disk Utility

There's very little, if anything, you can delete using the Disk Cleanup that will do any harm, that's what it's for, to get rid of unneeded files and stuff you no longer need. You can safely delete those you listed and probably all the others also, however you can list them if you're still apprehensive.

As for the slow boots, what do you have starting when the computer boots? Run 'msconfig', go to the Startup tab and look at what is checked. NOTHING has to start at reboot, but generally you want your security features to start (firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware) since you would activate them anyway.

Post back if you are unsure about something.

I've just bought a new 1 TB WD green drive which I will be using to store important data. It will be backed up but I'd still like to feel confident about the new drive. (The first one I got was bad right away, had to RMA it.) I read about a Linux utility called "badblocks -svw" that checks a hard drive for errors and which is supposed to be much more thorough than Windows default scandisk utility. Is this true? Is there a Windows 3rd party utility that is as thorough as the Linux one?

Thanks,

Have found that maybe 1 in 10 CDs comes out with a bad section.

The burner is an NEC 3550A

When I re-copy and record they turn out OK.

Is there any utility program that can check recorded CD's for
bad spots without having to wait to listen to the whole thing?

Thanks!

You could have the disk verify after burning, it takes a look at the source files and compares to what is on the disk, if its different it fails verification.

Under what circumstances would I use the Check Disk (chk disk) utility? I frequently defrag, scan for viruses, make sure I have the latest Windows Updates and use the disk cleanup utility.

My Son was trying to sync his IPod from ITunes and at a certain point it froze and a drop down window indicated there was a possible error on the disk and suggested he run the Check Disk Utility. It then dawned on me that I don't recall ever using this utility and wonder if it is something I should invoke on a regular basis or just when a potential problem occurs as referenced above?

I have some problems on my disk and I always get the message asking to run chkdsk.

using the command prompt, I can run chkdsk but for runnig it on C it asks me to restart and then chkdsk will be scheduled to run automatically then, so far so good...but the problem is that when restarting chkdsk is never run. In fact I restart...and just when chkdsk is supposed to start the computer restarts again....and then I am back to windows without chkdsk run.

And I would like to mention that I have a linux ubuntu installed on the machine also..and there is the GRUB boot loader and to start windows I choose windows XP from a list given by GRUB...

Is it possible that GRUB prevents chkdsk from running...any suggestions for fixing this...

Thanks in advance...

If you have ZoneAlarm v.5, you will need to go back to 4.5 for this to work. More information on their site.

In the meantime, you can run chkdsk from the Recovery Console (see Help and Support).

Yesterday however, after my computer was on stand by, I tried to open up thunderbird to check my emails when I got the corrupt file windows message. I restarted and the check utility came up again..this time a lot of messages popped up saying that it was "fixing" the disks etc. When I got back into windows and opened up thunderbird..my entire inbox was gone. Everything else with thunderbird is there instead of the inbox. The check disk is still coming up on startup.

Can I recover my inbox? Thank you.

A:Window's check disk utility giving me problems...

Probably not. Chkdsk does a good job of shreading corrupt files when it finds them and can't repair them. But chkdsk /r will try to recover any information it finds in bad clusters on the drive.

If you have the XP CD, run chkdsk /r from the Recovery Console and see what the results say about bad sectors. But by whatever means, you should check your drive, just in case, before it fails on you.

I periodically get notices from Win7 that I need to run the disk check utility. This is usually after a BSOD. These events have been occurring from the day I bought this laptop and I have posted them here in the past.

This time, the disk check utility changed names on at least 12 files. I don't know WHAT files, because the utility said the file names were corrupted.

After the reboot, I found that my Libraries were missing from the file manager. My Documents, Pictures, Videos and Music were gone. If I looked by clicking on C: and then navigating to them, I could find them, but the file manager could not.

Also, clicking on the Start button, then All Programs, gave me an empty screen. All the shortcuts were gone. Many of the shortcuts on my Task Bar are missing their Icons, but they work.

Many of my music files will not play because the file extension is now m4p. Changing the file extension to mp3 or mp4 does not work, the system sees them as an unknown file type.

I ran Microsoft Security Essentials, a FULL SCAN, and it scanned about 86,000 files. That was all it could find.

I have attached images that show the start menu and virus scan results as well as the usual dump files. The images show a black desktop, but I corrected that by re-choosing the custom theme I had made.

I tried to use Restore, but the restore points have dissapeared, and I cannot restore to before this event.

Please....................

Hello all, I'm a rookie on this board and I'm desperately trying to fix my computer. HOpefully some experts can give me some hope.

My computer freezes quite often, it just happens to freeze randomly even when I was doing nothing on the computer. So I researched on the issue and happend to found a recommendation to run disk defrag and run Check Disk Utility.

Just an hour ago, I ran the "check disk utility" against my C: (where OS is installed). It said It can't be ran since C: is in use but I was able to schedule it to run before computer starts up the next time.

So I did and check disk operated on my next restart. It took quite a while and froze in the middle of the check disk. So I was forced to restart the computer and it re-check the disk again. THis time it deleted a lot of files/security objects? (like a 1000 of these things were deleted) and then re-written again and replaced with other objects. (I'm sorry I didn't take note what these objects are but theere were a lot)

Then it continued the check disk and finished. Now when VISTA started up, I logged in as usual but it turned into a black screen with only the cursor and a dialog box (Error Loading NVCPL.dll. Access Denied)

I can't log back in. But it seems like everything is still there since the HDD partition with VISTA in it still shows my previous size.

How can I repair this!? such that I don't have to reformat my OS...

I need help desperately...thanks in advance..... Read more

I have been using Vista's Back-Up and Restore facility on my Dell Inspiron 6400 for quite some time now and have encountered no problems (aside from the fact that I question the comprehensibility of it). However over the past few days I have recieved an error message along these lines whilst trying to back-up: Data error (cyclic redundancy check). (0x80070017).

After restarting the laptop, repowering the external hdd, and attempting to re-run the process numerous times with it still refusing to complete, I deleted the entire back up and proceeded to create another one, with the same eventual error. I'm just really not sure what the problem is at the moment. If anyone could shine some light on the matter I would very much appreciate it.

Is there a way to gauge a PC system's gaming ability?

Since video cards and add-on programs (Direct X, etc) are so fundamental to game play, if would be nice to have a utility that would give a yes or no on the question "Will this game work on my computer?"

Bottom line is I don't know if my PC is 3D, GL rendering or what anymore since video card evolution is non-stop. A utility program to scan the computer's capability would help.

I used a combination of Autoruns, msconfig, and regedit...to track down and manually delete any/all references to these two files. My system now boots up normally .

So...I can't tell you what it was or how it happened but I can say that deleting any/all registry and file references took care of it on my system.

I don't think it was malware of any sort, but I'm no expert at determining such.

A:HP System Event Utility

Hi Cyclelegs, Thank you for your inquiry, I will do my best to assist you! The HP System Event Utility  enables special function keys on the system to be programmed. I believe it adds the extra features to the buttons. such as Wireless on and off. When I tried to install it on a lab computer here it just told me it was already installed.  When I put it in the search bar it just brings up the download. You are not able to access or use it to alter or change anything. I hope this has addressed your concerns.

Hi All,
Not sure if I'm in the correct discussion but I made a disk image of my "C" drive using Windows 7 built-in utility onto another hard drive. My "C" drive is using 27.4GB of data but the Image size is only 12.9GB. Could I have done something wrong? I thought the image size would be at least as big as the used space on the "C" drive. I'm concerned that I didn't get all my programs, files and settings backed up correctly.

Any thoughts?

Thanks............Tom

P.S. I tried to do this last night using DVD's for backup but decided to abort after 9! Dvd's were burnt and it still was not completed.

I'm anticipating putting a versatile machine together that will check and scan HDs, virus and malware removal and also serve as a remote access machine (remotely servicing other machines).

I will be using Win 7 pro as my OS. I will be using mutliple boot drives (i.e., one for scanning HDs and virus removal, a separate system HD for Remote Access usage).

I will need only to buy a cpu, mainboard and RAM. Reliability and function are priority, but so is budget. I have been Intel only for several years, but am not opposed to AMD if it meets all of my requirements.

The above said, I am hoping for recommendations for the cpu and mainboard.

Given that I will generally be using this machine for singular functions at any given time, I assume that Hyper-threading will not be important?

The parts I'm considering:

Gigabyte Intel H81 Motherboard

Intel Pentium G3220

or

Intel G3420

I have not used AMD for many years, so I'm not familiar with the possibilities and savings of today.

The above components would run me around $150. I don't want a "bare minimum" machine and am not opposed to spending more, but would like to spend as little as possible for what will easily meet my needs above. The one thing I don't want is slow scans and Remote Access lag (internet is 50/5mbps and should not be a bottleneck).

Thanks for any ideas.

A:Utility system on a budget

So in a nutshell you want a test machine that you can slip drives into or hook up to others etc etc?? I am only asking because you may be wanting to do something that I did and that is have a tester machine I can try out different programs and hardware etc on??

for that I just refurbished an older machine that I got for nothing it has a fairly decent CPU and even with DDR2 RAM but it does just about anything I ask of it.
You may be able to pick up one and do that with it.

But if you are like me and only have access to retail priced stuff then it is going to cost around $500 - out here at least I don't know where you are without going and looking and it does depend on the retail situation where you are and what quality you want to build into it.

After going to MSConfig, switching the BOOT.INI tab to Safe Mode and rebooting. I then ran Hijack, checked and fixed 04-Global Startup:Winlogon.exe. Then I went back to MSConfig, unchecked Safe Mode and attempted to reboot again. Now I get the following message:

System Configuration Utility
You have used the system config util. to make changes to the way windows starts. This system config util is currently in Diagnostic or Selective start up mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time windows starts, choose the normal start up mode on the general tab to start windows normally and undo the changes you made using the system config util.

When other users try to log on they get the following:

System Configuration Utility
An access denied error was created while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the selected changes.

In the System Configuration Utility "General Tab" it ask to select either the original Boot.INI or the Modified Boot.INI

How do I get all this back to normal without undoing the changes I made to get rid of the trojan?

They are both unframiliar to me.

MSCONFIG.EXE is a troubleshooting tool - not a fixing tool.First, re-enable them in MSCONFIG, then use this free tool to locate them and disable/delete them: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysintern...s/Autoruns.mspxIf you have difficulties with this tool, post back and we'll see if we can get the address for another one from garmanma.

I have a self-built computer. It's my second one, and I have rebuilt or modified this machine about 3-4 times. My current specs are this:

Windows XP Home
Giga-Byte GA7n400 Pro 2 (Rev. 1) Mother Board
AMD Athlon XP 3200+
2 GB of PC 3200 Dual-Channel Ram
Nvidia 6800 GT 256 MB AGP
36 GB Raptor 10k RPM SATA (OS and Main Support files)
74 GB Raptor 10k RPM SATA (Program Files)
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum

What my question is-are there any programs out there to help tweak performance. I am more of a hardware junky than I am into OC'ing. Just have no interest, and MHO is I know just enough about OC'ing to do something stupid.

I am mostly looking for any utilities that will in some way increase performance, or make it easier to tweak performance. I have always been a do-it-yourselfer, and I just feel my system is not performing to my liking, performance-wise.

I browsed the downloads section-but that won't tell me necessarily what is good and whats not. Basically, what are some tweak programs and utilities that the people of this forum recommend?

A:System Utility Tweakers and Such

While I'm not into overclocking, here are some programs I have used for general system performance. X-Setup works quite well, it is shareware, but you can get a demo at the link I provided. If you want a free program, try TuneXP. It works very well also. Bear in mind that all these programs bear a certain amount of risk, be sure and back up your registry before you start, in case somthing goes wrong.

And if you are like me and are really feeling brave, you can do a lot of what these programs do manually. A good place to look for manual tweaks is at TweakHound's site. Again if you go this route, remember to back up first, you won't be sorry.

A:System Configuration Utility

MCI has to do with communications devices and I believe multi-media as well.

since is has the ".BAK" that would give the impression that it was backed up brolly due to some system changes.

Uncheck it, reboot the system and test your functionality. *IF* things still work, you should be able to safely remove it.
Good Luck!

The fact that msconfig won't stay open is a classic sympton of spyware. When that happens you can't usually access regedit.exe from Run or your Internet Options from the Tools menu in IE.

Why are companies so irresponsible and don't provide an uninstall option that removes all the garbage they install on your system?

Few minutes ago I was able to completely remove the Blackberry desktop software that I was no longer using and was bothering when copying files. But for that I had to spent hours using cleaners, disk search utilities and registry managers to get rid of every piece of trash.

Right now I have registry entries and drivers and garbage from Sierra Broadband aircard wireless modem that I'm no longer using but if I try to remove trashes all my network setting. And there I have to left all those drivers and registry keys bloating my system.

So, is there an utility that tracks every minute change on your system when you install a software so that you can uninstall software removing every piece of crap without damaging your system???

A:Utility to track installations and changes in your system ???

I don't know of anything that tracks changes for normal users, but if you need to remove a software completely then I suggest Revo Uninstaller. It's a very powerful uninstaller that can hunt down remnants and remove them effectively.

I have decided to spend some time trying to reduce my processes in my task manager. I am up to 66 on with WIN 64XP Pro and it's taking a long time to finish booting.

As I started this process, I checked out my System Configuration Utility and found an odd item in the startup list.

It's listed simply as a startup item called cQE with a command listed only as cQE also. The location of it is as follows.

SOFTWARE\wow6432Node\microsoft\windows\currentversion\Run

When I go to my registry, I can find that series under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE but cQE isn't found in Run. I can't find that series anywhere else in the registry but I may not know where to look.

Can someone tell me if this item is dangerous and if so, how to remove it?
Thanks

A:Mysterious cQE in System Configuration Utility

Is it still enabled?

You'll have to find out what it is before you can decide whether to keep it. Where is the program located?

Check a startup manager (I like Startup CPL):

Ashampoo Startup Tuner
Startup Control Panel
MZ Startup Manager
Startup Control Panel (Exe version for Vista)
Emsa Startup Manager
EM Startup Manager
WheresJames Startup Manager

Startup Programs Reference
Startup Database (bleepingcomputer)

If all else fails, you can see all your startups with Autoruns.

Do you have a Gigabyte board? If you do, and this exists: C:\Program Files\GIGABYTE\GEST\GSvr.exe, then it is a power-management utility.

There are also Trojans with that name, and a rootkit could have an entry in that registry location that is invisible to you.

Keep scrolling down as pics take up a lot of space.

I am trying to clean out things in my start-up procedure that I don't need when I boot up the computer. Initially I disabled everything. One particular item keeps getting put back on automatically somehow after re-boot. This particular item is related to Dell Support Center. I use it occasionally, but don't need it at startup. This is what is being re-selected. (note checked item)

Here is the process with which I performed this. As stated, Initially I did a <disable all> and clicked on <apply> to which I get a message

I click ok to the message above then <OK> to accept changes and I get the same message again to which I answer ok again. This seems to accept the changes. the next thing I see is the choice to restart or exit without restart. Either way when I do eventually restart I get this message below.

If I simply click ok it seems to keep the changes but dumps me back out to the system configuration Utility screen, which I don't want.

IF I check the box "don't show message or launch system config utility", the next time it I restart or power up again everything is as I selected except it puts the item "sprtcmd" back into the startup procedure again. How can I keep my changes and still not show this message everytime I start up?

I used the System Configuration Utility to try to remove some of the items that load on startup but things didn't work as I thought. Now whenever I boot up a System Configuration Utility box comes up with this message:
You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts.
The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts.

Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using the System Configuration Utility.

Box: Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows start.
OK
I checked the box for the "Don't show this message" then clicked OK. Then I opened the System Configuration Utility and on the General tab marked the Normal Startup button, clicked on Apply the closed the utility. Now a box comes up to restart which I do. But when Windows restarts, I get the same System Configuration Utility window.
Anybody know how I fix this?

A:System Configuration Utility problem

Once you have used Msconfig to UNselect programs that start at boot time, you will continually be now running in Selective Startup mode.
Selecting Normal will re-select all the UNselected apps.

The first time you UNselect and reboot you will get the window you mention.
Select the option "don't show again" and it should not appear on the next boot.

Hi! I was trying to get rid of the sprtcmd.exe problem first by using msconf as suggested by someone. I then got rid of that problem by following another method found on the forum. But every time I boot up, I get the system config utility telling me that I have to start up in normal fashion and with enough clicking I get rid of it. But how do I stop making it come up to begin with? Thanks so much.

Hi all,

Great site you have here! And my question is when I turn on my computer I always get the "System Config. Utility" window. I cannot get rid of this. I did make a couple of tweaks to the startup tab but cannot remember which ones. I turned them all back on by selecting the "select all" button but still no luck.

Also under the "General" tab I cannot select the Diagnostic Startup.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Go easy on me I am sort of a nb at this.

Son calls me last night with this problem.
When booting up, the Sys Config Util comes up with the usual canned statement. He has not made any changes. Clicks Don't show this again then clicks OK. Reboots and again it comes up. He is the only user and administrator. Can't seem to solve it for him. Any ideas fellas?

I operate with Windows XP Home Edition. I have read that I can speed up my start-up by disabling some of the "startup" applications. When I open the msconfig and open tab "startup" there appears to be a lot of applications running. Will I gain from disabling those that I do not need? Is there a way of finding out which ones are needed and which ones can be disabled.
Also is there other things I can do to speed things up?
Thanks,
Syrup

While on Windows XP, Vista and 7, we used a a lot of system utility suits like System Mechanic, Tuneup Utilities and Advanced System Care. But do we really need them in Windows 8? It already does many of the optimization stuff like auto defragging. Installing something like CCleaner which doesn't have background tasks might be more than enough? What do you think?

I think you will find many on this forum did not use any of that stuff.

Ccleaner, probably, but that is all.

Greetings to everyone. thanks for reading my first post!

I've read on the Web that this "1" that comes up in Windows System Configuration Utility (Windows XP) is potentially harmful to my computer. To that end, I have two basic questions. (1) Is this true and (2) If so, how do I get rid of it? I've already disabled it from WSCU.

John

I have a COMPAQ laptop,Windows XP Home Edition
Each time I start up my computer, the following message shows up:

"You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts. The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts. Choose the Normal Startup mode on the general tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using the System Configuration Utility."

I have already checked the "Normal Startup" box but after restarting, the message pops up again.
I can't even connect to the internet, and my anti-virus doesn't detect anything bad. HELP PLEASE!!

I've noticed that when I run the utility in preparation for posting about some problem, it always shows that my antivirus (Windows Defender) is installed but disabled. I also see this in the scans in the posts of others. Is this a bug? My Defender is most assuredly not disabled.
