HD Diagnostic Utility problem

Q: HD Diagnostic Utility problem

I have three HD Diagnostic Utility programs for SMART Test on my HDs.
They are HDTune,Speedfan and HDDScan.

The problem:
1.When I startup my PC one of my HD has lower "Raw Read Error Rate" Current Value before the last shutdown. (Example: After Startup:110, Before:115).

2.If I used HDTune and Speedfan, the Value is 110 then I used HDDScan the value increased into 115 again. After that I used HDTune and Speedfan again, the Value is 115 now.

3.This weird problem also applied on "Hardware ECC Recovered" attribute.

Do you know what could caused this -> Why using HDDScan makes "Raw Read Error Rate" Current Value Increase? Could this indicate a problem on my HDs/another Hardware?

I think question two should be posted in Hardware subforum, but I write in this subforum because I think it mostly software related.

Is there a way to gauge a PC system's gaming ability?

Since video cards and add-on programs (Direct X, etc) are so fundamental to game play, if would be nice to have a utility that would give a yes or no on the question "Will this game work on my computer?"

Bottom line is I don't know if my PC is 3D, GL rendering or what anymore since video card evolution is non-stop. A utility program to scan the computer's capability would help.

That's actually built into Directx.

Go to Start, Run type in dxdiag and hit enter.

If that doesn't work, then do a search on your system for dxdiag and open it when you find it.

I am starting a small computer repair business out of my home and am looking for a good diagnostic utility with reporting.

I would like to run the utility and be able to provide a report to the customer of the findings. Are there any free or reasonably priced utilities out there that I could use for this?

Thanks Again!

The problem with diagnostic software is that they could report false positive's, and you the technician must be able to determine what is and isnt a false positive.

More and more, I am faced with hardware problems (as opposed to malware or OS corruption) on computers I'm asked to diagnose.

Can anyone recommend or suggest a good Hardware diagnostic utility or utilities that will make my job easier? At this point, going the old route of unhooking one component at a time (or unhooking all and adding one back in at a time) is taking its toll on me. Spending $$ on a good reliable software tool that can be run from a USB drive, CD, or installed and uninstalled for troubleshooting multiple systems is warranted.

Any help is appreciated. Many thanks.

I received a lot of helpful ideas from my last posting, just none of them seemed to fix the problem. Windows won't boot in any way shape or form. It almost always just restarts again before even getting to the black screen with the windows xp logo and loading bar.

I flashed the BIOS with the appropriate file for my board and chipset. Went fine.

I ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic Utility and everything passed.

I ran the Maxtor Powermax HD Diagnostic tool and everything passed.

Sometimes before it restarts after a failed boot a blue screen comes up with a Stop error. This error is usually a different hexidecimal code each time. I can only read this screen when booting from the XP CD. It usually says DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. Stop: 0xD1

I really don't know what else to do. I can't get to the screen in the XP CD to format and reinstall. I got to it once and chose Recovery Console but that didn't even load system just restarted.

I just tried disabling L2 cache and BIOS cache. Still no luck.

Please Help!

Hello and welcome manamad mate my first thought is for you to run this RAM - Test with Memtest86+ because it sounds like a bad RAM issue and is the only memtest we recommend.
You must let it run for at least 8 passes because any less you may as well not bother. However if errors come up fairly quickly then you can stop the test see what that would look like in my pic . If you get errors then you will need to replace the RAM depending on what sticks of RAM are installed - one stick easy done two sticks you will need to find the bad one.

Oh and a few more system specs would be handy. System Info - See Your System Specs

I ran the extended test overnight and this morning it had rebooted into Vista. The problem is that there are no results in the toolbar to be viewed as the tutorial said it should be. Where can I view the results of the memory test?

A:Memory Diagnostic Tool Problem

Which memory test, which tool, and which tutorial? I'm presuming that you're using the built in memory tester - and it should've given you a notice if it passed the test or if it found any problems. If you didn't get a message, then I'd suspect that the test terminated abnormally - so you'll have to run the test and see if you can get a message from it (or see when it terminates). This'll involve a lot of boring, staring at the screen - but I've found not evidence of a log file or results page that will be displayed. Here's a link to the BC tutorial on the memory test: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/using-vista-windows-memory-diagnostics-tool/

A friend's laptop(running XP Home) is acting incredably slow and freezing intermitantly for no reason I can think of . I've tried all the things that I know about to try and solved this(including watching the CPU usage....which is always very, very low, like 95% free, periodically running a savvy registry cleanup program, keeping lots of free space on HardDrive, defragging, removing adware/spyware, garbage files, virus scans, etc.)

This brings up a question I've been wanting the answer to from time to time.

Is there such a thing as a good "diagnostic" program that will run in the background and notify/advise you about problems during the operation of a computer? I've used things like Fresh Diagnose and others, but they just seem to "benchmark" and give you hardware/software info about what's on the computer, not what problems are occuring AS they happen during operation.

Is there anything like that available, please?

Thank you,
jA---

A:Really good problem diagnostic program??

I read your post and the first thing that comes to mind is that he has a heat problem ocurring. Systems will run slow and/or freeze up as a result of insuffucient cooling of the CPU. Check the CPU cooling fan and make sure it's running. If not, the CPU will literally cook itself to death with continued use. Another easy check is to make sure the cooling fan exhaust port is clear of lint, hair, dirt etc and also make sure any and all intake vents are clear of debris. If they are all open and look as though air can flow freely through them, I recommend getting the system, specifically the cooling fan, checked out as replacing a cooling fan is far easier and less expensive than replacing the system board, on which most likely the CPU is welded. Other options are:

If you have some canned air, blow off the cooling fan blades. Clean blades move a larger volume of air due to less friction and the fan motor will not have to work as hard to turn the blades.

Check the BIOS settings relating to system monitoring and see if the monitoring is enabled. Try resetting the System Monitoring settings in the BIOS to the factory defaults as that should bring the system to the optimal operational settings, and also see what you can find in Windows XP in the way of system monitoring with regard to the CPU temperature regulation.

That's my initial diagnosis of the laptop problem. As for Diagnostic programs, I don't know of any other than a couple of memory management programs. Fo... Read more

Hello , I am writing to you from my friends computer.

I am running windows 7 for long time and I havent came accross this yet , so this is what happend in shorter version :

I was using my computer when the screen just went black. I just tought to myself its probably something wrong with my memory so i ran the Memory Diagnostic Tool ,I picked the first choice that it recommended "Save work and restart the system".

The computer restarted , and the tool started to work after 15-20 minutes it was nearly done 90 somthing % , i just went down stairs to get a drink and when i came backed upstairs i realised that the scanning is at 8% again , I tought maybe thats how it works , scans 2-3 times , i lefted the computer working over the night when i waken up the tool was still working , went to work , came backed and the tool was still working , i just said to myself this has to be wrong , i unpluged the pc left it over the night. Turned it on , the diagnostic tool started itself again , The scan was neraly over when just again i realised that this think goes in infinity. I pressed the " Esc" button as it said to finish but when i press the button the scan just resets and goes from 0% again

It doesnt want to let me run safe mode or anything else , only go to bios set up.

I would really appreciate if you could help me guys, bye

The light still blinks exactly the same to this day although the laptop has always seemed to work just fine all along.

Well...

This is weird.

I had Norton System Works (which includes Norton Anti-Virus) & Personal Firewall 2004 on my machine. Bought 2006. Removed 2004 prior to 2006 install...but 2006 failed to install...it told me I had to remove 2004 manually (which...I had already done [email protected]#$%^&*.) Tried to reinstall 2004, so as to then have 2006 remove it in a fresh install; & that didn't work either. Fought with this all weekend.

Finally...I had had enough...I went into the registry & deleted every instance of anything labeled Norton or Symantec; & I'm taking the software back to CompUSA for something else. I also deleted everything related to both in the program files & elsewhere; & I've had it with the Symantec folks.

So...here's what I need:

1) A registry editor/utility which will finish the Norton/Symantec removal job in the registry completely (I ran a [Ctrl+F] Find...but I'm sure there's more...I would like to get my hands on something that will look at my machine...see that nothing is installed on my machine related to Norton/Symantec...& repair the registry accordingly.)

2) A good Firewall (to replace Norton Personal Firewall.)

3) A good Anti-Virus program (to replace Norton Anti-Virus.)

4) A good PC diagnostic utility (to replace Norton System Works.)

Does anyone have this stuff bundled together like Norton?...or will I have to go to different vendors (which...I don't mind anyway.)

Thanks,

mark4man

hi every1, a friend of mine recently had a virus which basically rendered her computer unusable. windows would start, backround of desktop would appear but thats as far as it would go, no icons, taskbar, etc. the only way around was doing a system restore in safe mode. windows is fine now, no viruses and running good. she also backups up the 'c' drive to an external drive 'f' using xp's backup utility. the problem is when we went to restore some of the files, the restore failed saying it could not find the backup file to restore from. when you start the backup utility, all the backup files are there, you can open them and see all the folders inside each file, but when it tries to restore from that backup file it says it cant find it. did the system restore wipe something out??? the system restore was done using a 3/11/2011 date. the backup we're trying was done 1/20/2011. is there anyway to fix this?
thanks

Since upgrading to Windows 10, I have been unable to burn iso files to disk, sometimes I get an error message, saying this could be due to disk utility burn speed. Most of the time just a message, an error occurred.
With this same computer, I never had a problem with Windows 8, I also have Linux Mint, dual-booted on this laptop, and it will burn images to disk.
Is there some way to tweak the disk burn utility? Has anyone else experienced this?

A:Problem with Disk Burn Utility

You will have a lot of people offering you their favourite iso image burning programs.
It's up to you to chose which one suits you best.

I personally use Windows USB/DVD Download Tool.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down...-download-tool

I use it since the early days of Win 7, and I have been using it to burn Win 10 iso to bootable DVDs.
I chose it because of its simplicity. Practically ANYONE can use it without problem.

Ok, I'm trying to format CD-RWs so I can drag and drop files onto it. I use the Roxio Direct CD Format utility and it just gets hung up. I have to shut down the computer to get it to turn off. I have a (brand new) Gateway Notebook with an 8x/8x/24x CDRW drive. I've tried multi speed 1x 2x 4x cd-rw thought I might need the high speed type so I tried those too, same problem. Any suggestions? Please!!

A:Problem with Direct CD Format Utility

Update the software and firmware for the burner.

With Roxio 5 and higher updating EZCD also updates DirectCD: http://www.roxio.com/en/support/software_updates.jhtml Gateway should be able to link you to the firmware. Yes I read it is a new computer, but it wouldn’t be the first time a new computer or burner needed updating.

You should use the high speed RW.

so....i have a new vista home premium sp1 laptop connected to a dsl modem via wireless, and an old xp home sp3 laptop connected to the modem via cable....

downloaded the file transfer "utility" from ms to the xp laptop, got my key from the vista laptop
got the two talking to each other, and selected the files to transfer (pics and docs only)

the transfer started....was slower than i expected, but that was ok.....until a little computer icon with a big red X over it started flashing on both machines

the wireless signal is excellent,, and i spent a good deal of time researching a firmware upgrade to it from verizon so the vista machine would be wirelessly compatible with the modem

if i have to, i s'pose i can go buy one of those transfer cables, or another ethernet cable, but i'd like not to have to spend the money, if possible.....

done some searching online...haven't found anyone who tried the transfer utility across a network wireless at one end and cabled at the other....seems like it outta work (a signal is a signal after all)

so i thought i'd come here for thoughts

thanks

A:ms transfer utility problem on a network

Instead of doing it over the network just run the Transfer utility and have it save the data to a file on the hard drive, then copy the file to the new computer over the network and run the Transfer utility again to import the data. Couple more steps but it's more likely to work.

You may want to close all files - including Turning off any Virus and Spyware programs.
After you make sure all files are closed. Try the backup process again

I used the System Configuration Utility to try to remove some of the items that load on startup but things didn't work as I thought. Now whenever I boot up a System Configuration Utility box comes up with this message:
You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts.
The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts.

Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using the System Configuration Utility.

Box: Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows start.
OK
I checked the box for the "Don't show this message" then clicked OK. Then I opened the System Configuration Utility and on the General tab marked the Normal Startup button, clicked on Apply the closed the utility. Now a box comes up to restart which I do. But when Windows restarts, I get the same System Configuration Utility window.
Anybody know how I fix this?

A:System Configuration Utility problem

Once you have used Msconfig to UNselect programs that start at boot time, you will continually be now running in Selective Startup mode.
Selecting Normal will re-select all the UNselected apps.

The first time you UNselect and reboot you will get the window you mention.
Select the option "don't show again" and it should not appear on the next boot.

Hello. Today i was performing a disk check error on my pc with windows 7 64 bits installed. At the final, i saw something strange, it said: "windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them", and the error was saved in cbs.log. Could you please check this one and tell me what is wrong? Thanks in advance!
Yours, emilyan2010

A:Strange problem with checkdisk utility

I'm not a cbs.log expert. In fact, I'm not an expert in anything. Sorry.

The "windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them" message is quite often seen after a System File Checker scan. So until a cbs.log expert comes along, I'd suggest running a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two, this tutorial.) If SFC isn't able to fix the problems with the first scan, it's recommended to run the scan 3 times, rebooting in between each scan.

This error message pops up occasionally that tells me a problem was caused by ATI External Event Utility and that the program ended. It only pops up when I eject my iPod from iTunes. I clicked the bubble on the bottom right-hand corner of my screen for more info and all I got was "ATI Technologies, Inc. does not currently have a solution for the problem that you reported."

I have no idea what ATI External Event Utility is - I googled it but I didn't really find out anything.

1. What is this program and what does it do?
2. Do I actually need it on my computer?
3. Why does this error message only come up when I eject my iPod?

I have Vista, by the way.

If I do a search for F-B/S =, and if this item is entered for the current date, it is displayed in the search results, however, none of the same items appear for the past dates. I do recall that the first time I performed this search, all items, past & present were displayed, but all subsequent searches have failed to display all the searched for items.

My intent is to print the resultant list as a history for tracking blood sugar and body weight, and other similar items to create a history.

And I would like to mention that I have a linux ubuntu installed on the machine also..and there is the GRUB boot loader and to start windows I choose windows XP from a list given by GRUB...

Is it possible that GRUB prevents chkdsk from running...any suggestions for fixing this...

hi everyone, I have a pop-up bubble indicating corrupt file - please run chkdsk utility which I've tried via start>programs>accessories>command with Chkdsk, Ckdsk/R and Chkdsk/F.

I've attached screen shots hoping some one may be able to help by informing me how I might go about the task of purging the corrupt file.
The screen shots aren't necessarily in the order of how I took them, but hopefully they'll provide someone who may be able to help with a better understanding of the problem.

(I tried a yes on the volume/restart option and then restarted but that process didn't get rid of the corrupt file).

I'd really appreciate any help regarding this matter . . .

I reformated my 8.4 gig hard drive under the DOD erase option and after it done its passes I started loading up my windows but when I was going to install it on hte drive it showed I onlyhad 7.5 gigs and when I went back to system eraser it showed my drive was 8.4 gigs but when it reformated again it only reformated 7.5 gigs of space I contacted webroot with no reply yet but I'm really worried that window washer screwed up my old harddrive I dunno just letting you people know and if any one does have a fix around this problem, please do tell. I treid loading it up again with [email protected] Killdisk and that one showed I only had 7.5 gigs of space so, yeah I think it's done for good, still works though just smaller......

Ok before I get flamed I work for AOL Tech Support. Yes yes I know I know, I don't enjoy it but it pays the bills.

Ok so I get calls of all kinds here ranging fromt he stupid to the just plain weird and I came across 2 calls abck to back who had the same problem in the System Configuration utility and was wondering if anyone on ehre knew what it might mean cause I was at a loss.

Just to give a little background on both computers I was teching over the phone both had Windows XP. one had SP1 and the other had SP2.

The First Call:

It was a Dell Computer with Windows XP SP2. He had previously had AOL 9.0 Optimized installed on his computer and then uninstalled and reinstalled AOL 9.0 VR (Vista Ready). He was complaining of experiencing some slowness and AOL freezing. So I checked his processess and they were 29 or 30 which is a good number for XP so then I proceeded to do the normal AOL fixes which fixed the AOL's slowness and freezing. So I thoguht I should try one more thing so I did a MSCONFIG just to see his system configuration utility and to my surprise he was in selective startup and instead of there being a check mark in Load Startup Items there was a green box and all the checkmark boxes were green. Everytime we clicked on Load Startup items the green box would disappear and the text would gray out.
The Second Call:

It was a Compaq Presario with Windows XP SP1. Experiencing same problems as above, AOL slow and freezing. Checked processes and it was 29. ... Read more

I have had a reaccuring problem where my computer reboots for no reason. I ran memtest86 and a diagnostic program I got off the Microsoft site and found no problems. However I used VCOM Fixit Utility and everytime I run the "Pseudo Random Address Test" my computer reboots. All the other memory tests work fine. I am using 1Gig (2 512MB) Centon memory with an ABIT NF8 motherboard. This type of memory is not on the list of supported memory on the website but I didn't think it mattered - however I'm beginning to think it does. Would it be safe to say I have bad memory (or unsupported memory) and should buy a brand that is supported? Thanks for your help.

Hiya

This may well point to the RAM. I'm just looking at the memory compatible for your motherboard (hope you can click the link):

http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/lis...erboards&mfr=ABIT&cat=RAM&model=NF8&submit=Go

And all are non-ecc and with the exception of one 1GB stick, all unbuffered.

What is the exact type of RAM that you have installed?

YES!!! Testdisk is a great opensource HDD repair utility... TestDisk - CGSecurity

It, and many HDD repair utilities can take a long time to run, (the larger the HDD, the longer it will take naturally!) so I'd start it up before you go to bed and let it run... just disable screensavers and sleep mode, etc before you do!

Ok so my problem here might seem a little complex but im going to go ahead and type it all out in hopes someone can help me out. Here goes:

Ok so I have a 160 GB HDD that Win7 is installed on. I have a slave drive that's 320 GB that has Windows XP on it. (I boot from the 160 GB Win7 HDD).

I have an 80 GB laptop HDD with USB enclosure which I want to use to make a complete disc image of using the Win7 backup utility from the Control Panel. The Win7 HDD has 70 GB used on it so I have enough space on the external laptop HDD.

So this all sounds good like ok what is the problem? So here's the problem...Win7 Backup Utility automatically keeps highlighted the HDD's which need to be imaged for Windows to funtion properly (according to the backup utility). So when I click the Backup and Restore option in the Control Panel and then click Create a system image, I choose my external HDD (the 80 GB laptop HDD in USB enclosure) and I hit next. On the next screen it has the Win7 160 GB HDD and the 320 GB Windows XP HDD checked and they are greyed out so I can not click either of them. So now my total backup is going to take up alot more space than the 80 GB HDD external can hold.

Solution I tried:

I shut down and unplugged the Win XP HDD from the MoBo and attempted to start the computer up. I received an error telling me that I have no active boot partition or something along those lines can't remember it word for word. So I shut down again and plugged the XP HDD ba... Read more

Recently, the WiFi on this particular laptop has been sub-par. Downloading the same file, the WiFi downloads at the rate of 70 kbps (pretty bad) while the Ethernet cable is at 700 kbps ~ 1000 kbps. I know that the Ethernet is almost always faster than the WiFi but the discrepancies are just jarring. I also noted that the signal strength is at maximum so distance isn't an issue. This isn't the case with other devices, such as my phone's WiFi speed, where I can stream HD Youtube videos with no problem.

Possible culprits:

Software:

Whenever I use Intel Driver Update Utility to attempt to fix the problem, it shows that I need to update my WiFi driver and my Bluetooth driver. The weird thing is that after I downloaded and installed those updates, it says that I need to install those same drivers after re-scanning for updates. This tells me that there's something fishy with this laptop's wireless drivers software-wise.

Hardware:

I have an Intel Wireless Dual Band AC 8260 as my wireless driver. I'm not really familiar with these, but I heard somewhere that there are certain frequency speeds (5 GHz, etc...) that need to be configured in order for the driver and the router to be compatible. The weird thing is that I've been using my laptop for 3 months now and it didn't have a problem until two weeks ago, which makes me think that this is a software problem.

Thanks for your help in advance!

After my new build froze up during boot up into Windows 8, I tried to run Windows 8's built-in Windows Memory Diagnostic, extended setting, but it got stuck at 21% of 1st pass (10% overall) after running it overnight (at least 12 hours). I had 4x4GB memory modules, and re-ran this test with only one stick in different slots, all with the same result: it would quickly get to 10% overall complete, then apparently get stuck there. However I noted that I could still access F1 options when it got to 10% complete, so it wasn't frozen, but the system became extremely slow, with the screen displaying text one word at a time.

Some ideas on how to isolate the problem? I wish I could just return both the motherboard and the memory to the store, but there may be a restocking fee involved with the motherboard unless it's defective.

My parts are:
Intel Core i7-3770K
MSI Z77A-GD65
Corsair Vengeance 4x4GB DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) model CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9

Other information/symptoms:
- I can not run memtest at bootup either by using a DVD/CD or USB key. The motherboard's boot code indicate that it keeps trying to detect the device (DVD drive or USB key) and then gives up. Maybe memtest isn't compatible with this hardware, or I am not configuring it properly, or there are some hardware problems here.
- The keyboard sometimes did not work during boot up, such as when attempting to select the USB key to boot into memtest (attaching a USB keyboard worked, but I still couldn't get memtest to run)... Read more

Read more

Hi Guys I hope that this doesn't sound too silly a question, but here goes: Laptop bought Dec 2014, Win 8.  Updated to Win 8.1.  Now upgraded to Win 10 via the MS free upgrade. I then ran the "Create recovery media tool" and produced the recovery drive (19GB+) - ie just after the Win 10 upgrade. Does anyone know if I can verify if the USB I have created holds Windows 8, 8.1 or 10? Also, can anyone explain why the same process (home made PC rather than HP laptop) produces a recovery drive of just over 4GB?  Both USBs were created within an hour of each other, and each of the computers has virtually the same 3rd party software on them. Many thanks for your sagacious help. ChilliFix

A:does create recovery media utility create utility for window...

ChilliFix, welcome to the forum. I believe that the Recovery media will be for Windows 8.  This is the original OS.  The app to make it is set for the original configuration.  You would be able to Reset the computer to Win 10 using the Recovery Manager, however. I am not certain of the reason for the difference in the size of the Recovery media.  I believe that it has to do with the fact that it Recovers the OS and all of the apps, as well as, the Recovery partition.  This would be done on a custom computer. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

A:Having DirectX Problem, Specifically DirectX Diagnostic

Hello Rudabega, welcome aboard.

The log you uploaded contains four elements beyond repair, as I apparently found.
keymgr.dll ==> non system service
korwbrkr.dll ==> non system service
kerboros.dll ==> non system service
d3d11.dll ==> DirectX Direct3D 11
► For the non system services, I am not very sure which software originated those files in your registry. The best what you can to deal with those is to download and install CCleaner > Run it > Click on the registry tab > scan for issues > fix selected issues.

► For DirectX Direct3D 11, I would say that it is inbuilt in windows. So if SFC is unable to fix it when windows is running, try SFC /SCANNOW : Run in Command Prompt at Boot

► But, for your situation, I would suggest you that a Repair Install would be the best option.

Hi,

I get this blue screen and my laptop reboots. This occurs very frequently at times and at times the laptop runs smoothly and all of a sudden reboots.

I get this error message "IEEE802.11b WLAN Card Utility has encountered a problem and needs to close".

It started occurring ever since i have replaced the LINKSYS WAG54G router with a new version.

I have contacted Linksys several times but they just dont have a solution to this problem. They even got me to download new drivers for the router.

The funny thing is whenever i use a different router or a wired router this problem does not occur.

Linksys has suggested i update my wireless drivers by downloading new drivers from the laptop manufacturers website. I am not too sure if i should be taking this route.

Would anyone know why this problem is occurring.

Regards,

Jewan

Hey guys thanks a lot for strolling through, I truly appreciate it and hope with everyones assistance this issue will get resolved. So here's my issue; have I've found that everytime I have allowed windows update to install anything that has had to do with security, following the updates I have always run into the BSOD resulting in restoring my computer to an earlier date. Well this time, things are a bit different.

Whenever my computer has seemed to start to choke up, and really begins to lag, from things as simple as maximizing a minimized window, and it taking about 20 seconds for it to do so, the BSOD is coming. Heres an example of one:
Ill be honest with you guys, I dont know how to interpret what the cause of it is, nor do I know where people find it,(event viewer logs?) but surprisingly I've worked on computers all my life really.
So heres the issue:
Computer completely froze up on me this time, cursor wouldn't react nothing, BSOD, then I found myself in A continuous looping failure of Windows Start up Repair, unable to actually load windows. I tried repairing the device by booting off my windows 7 disk and this is the error I keep getting:

by the way let me add that theres no restore point (of course right....) so that wasn't an option...

Now if im not mistaken that will be translated further in my logs file? Ive honestly really never known how to go about ... Read more

hi

This is a bit of a convoluted story but here goes...

I have an old PC (the oldest of several) which in which I want to upgrade 3 PATA HDs for 2 large (500GB) SATA-1 drives.

PC spec = Asus P4 PE, P4 Northwood 533FSB 3.06GHz, 1 GB pc2700 ram, 2 soundcards (I'm a musician), Win XP SP2 etc.

The first thing I did was enable RAID/SATA in BIOS & then install the Promise 376 Fasttrack RAID/SATA driver on all OS partitions (4 in all, spread across the 3 drives).

Now, of course, a get a quick POST message saying that "no RAID/SATA device detected", because I haven't installed them yet. However this message then disappears and my boot manager utility loads as usual (BootIt NG).

Then it occured to me that I hadn't installed either the Intel Application Accelerator or Chipset Software Installation utilities (as listed on the available downloads for P4 PE at Asus site).

So I installed the IAA first on one partition - but when I tried to reboot into this, the "no RAID/SATA" message came up before and after the BootItNG screen and the system rebooted again.

I got it to boot into the partition again & promptly uninstalled the IAA because I thought it was causing me the problem.

Then I installed the Chipset Installation utility.

This time, after rebooting into the "music" partition, many of the music software applications were not sending MIDI to one of the soundcards correctly, and the selected audio drivers had changed (f... Read more

A:Possible problem after Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility installation ?

both the chipset and the IAA are supposed to be installed FIRST THING after the install of the OS...I suspect that the later day install is what caused all the drivers to go *poof*...if your system is operating OK at this point just go with it, but if/when you do a wipe and clean install remember to install these items the first time you boot into your clean install, reboot, then carry on with installing other items...

My internet works fine if I'm plugged directly into the DSL box.

I first tried to fix the problem by downloading new drivers for my wireless and all that did was break my "connectivity doctor" program (no longer opens)

I have been trying to become more safety conscious lately so I thought I'd try this utility that Dell put on my PC. It's called SnapRestore.

When I try to execute it I get: Run-Time Error '13' Type mismatch.
I know this utility worked when I first got my new Dell, so something has happened to cause this problem.

I found no help on the Dell knowledge based documents other than how to uninstall and reinstall it. Which I did to no avail.

I have posted this question on the Dell bulletin board but have not gotten any responses.

Has anyone else had this problem and if so how do I fix it?

Have what had been an old dependable emachines XP Pro SP3 tower.  The other day when my son  turned it on he got what he described as gibberish hieroglypgics on the sign on screen.  He said that although he could go anywhere, everything was unreadable.

By the time I got home it was in worse shape.  I did see the 'hieroglyphics' (I think it was Japanese), and I was able to see the desktop once before it rebooted on it's own.  Safe mode with networking gave me an indeterminate BSOD.  Last good configuration just rebooted, and then normal boot started giving me an error saying that Windows/System32/Config/System was either missing or corrupt.

When I tried a Repair Install with an XP Pro SP3 disk it found no operating system, although if I just used the disk to get to the Repair Console DOS screen I could navigate to Windows, go to my user files etc.  From the Windows folder I ran a Fixboot, then a Fixmbr.  Rebooting failed to get me beyond the Config/System error.  I then rebooted again with the CD and hit enter to attempt another Repair Install.  This time it said it couldn't detect a hard drive.

I took out the hard drive and hooked it up as an external drive to another XP tower, with it coming up as an E: drive.  I opened a DOS command, went to the E: drive a performed a chkdsk /r /f.  It ran for a few hours but detected nothing.  Ditto for sfc /scannow.  I then right clicked ... Hi

A missing Windows/System32/Config/System is generally a good indication of failing hard drive ( 90% cases ). I would suggest verifying the health of the hard drive before proceeding to any other steps. Please use Seagate Seatool to run a full surface scan.

Hi all,

I've some weird things happening on my computer and I hope you can help me sort out things.
I've a fairly new computer with Windows 7 ultimate X64 and a WD1001 Caviar black hard drive.

I've had issues installing applications or drivers in the past (it was taking literally hours) but nothing really bad.
About 3 weeks ago my Windows update stopped working (it stays at 0%) and I couldn't update the virus definition in MS security essentials either.
I can't stop some services (like Win update) because of ""access denied" even though I do it as admin.

I tried to install a hard drive diagnostic tool: WD's Data Lifeguard diagnostic (I know it doesn't seem to be available for Win 7) but when I run it, it says I don't have any physical drive (but it sees the logical drives!)
Today I can't even start WinDLG!

I can run chkdsk but it returns nothing abnormal.
When I run with /R it says:
C:\Windows\system32>chkdsk /R
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.
I don't any other process is running though

I tried to install HD Tune Pro (for Win7) but I can't install it (it says "Unable to execute file in Temporary directory. Setup aborted. Error 5: Access is denied")

What's going on?
Do you think it is a hard drive issue? a Windows 7 issue? A RAM issue?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Welcome to TSG!

You'll have to check to make sure you wrote the site down correctly. The one which you reference definitely does not exist. It may have been a hoax to start with... I've never heard of a CD that can diagnose startup problems other than a registry cleaner- and you should note that those programs will only wreck your computer.

I would suggest you start another thread here describing the problem your son's computer is having and somebody should be able to help you out. Make sure to post the computer's make and model, version of Windows, and the exact error messages you are getting (I do mean word for word and including any cryptic-looking error codes- we find that information very useful!)

Good luck!

Hello,

first thing I hope I'am in the right area to post my problem, I have a problem with the system diagnostics report on my pc.  I have done all I know to do.  I ran a system report and health report and the error message says the security center has not recorded an anti-virus product.

Verify that an anti-virus product is installed and functioning, configure security center and anti virus status.

I have checked the anti virus on my pc and says is up to date and says in the security section that all is on and connected.

I don't know what else to do. I have tried to find a solution in windows website.
