What error is it giving?
Are you trying to install via Automatic Update?
Have you tried to download manually and install?
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1

You can also run the .Net Framework Cleanup Tool (Direct Download) and remove .Net Framework 3.5 then try to reinstall.

You can also read this post for more troubleshooting steps.

Hi I tried twice today to download and install the following updates, Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x86. it is a large update taking approx 30mins to download the 248MB package. Both times it got to the end of the download and the next I got was a message saying installation failed. At first I thought it was Comodo BoClean so turned it off the second time but got the same result anyway.
My PC is an AMD Athlon XP2400+, 1GB of RAM running on XP3 and updated via Automatic Updates "notify but do not install". I got a MSN email notification on IE8 RC1 and decided to check my Firewall connection to Microsoft Update, where I was told that the mentioned updates were available and decided to install them though not IE8 at this time.

For real time protection I use Comodo CIS, Comodo BoClean and SpywareBlaster. I switched off BoClean the second time and set CIS to installation mode both times. I cannot see anything else on my PC which could hinder the installation process. In my Add/Remove program list I have Microsoft .NET Framework versions 1.1,1.1 Hotfix, 2.0 Service Pack1, 3.0 Service Pack1, 3.5, Should I uninstall these before installing the latest version or should they all remain on my installed programs?. I would appreciate it if someone could offer some help here as I like to keep my PC up to date.

Hi .Well...let's start with the reason you have MS .NET installed on your system. What applications/drivers do you use which require any version? If you have no such applications...IMO it's not even necessary to install any version of MS .NET on a system. Doing so is a waste of time for those who don't have applications which demand MS .NET.

I haven't downloaded this update as I have dial-up and it says 26-48 hours to update this. Also, I had to reformat my computer three times with the SP3, even downloading from disk instead of internet - so scared to download Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x86 as don't want to have to reformat (and also don't want my computer running for 2-3 days to download).
Are there problems with this download like there were with SP3 (I ended up never being able to have a working computer with SP3)? Do I need this update? Will there be problems if I download from internet, and if not any other ways to update this (for free)?
Thank you.

Hello everyone!

I guess my luck ran out. So I am back on here to find out if anyone can help me. My problem is I tried to download the update:

At first it downloaded fine, I restarted my computer to install it, it installed fine. Then it restated Showing 2 of 3 stages of updates then My computer automatically restarted showed 3 of 3 stages of updates, Then I got a black screen which showed; I do not know if it was showing how many files indexed or filed, or configured out of a total number or what, then the computer restarted again and then I got the following message: "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer." Then the computer restarted again and went through the normal starting procedures.

I have already gone to Microsoft with this and have tried what they suggested and nothing worked so far. I keep getting the same results as above. They have had me try to manually install the programs individually. But that has not work so far. They have had me clean up and uninstall all .NET files and programs but I have found the following:
Hotfix for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (KB9584...
Hotfix for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (KB9535...

I could not see the numbers that followed after (KB9584 and (KB9535. Plus that is how it showed up on my Installed Programs and Updates lists.

I wonder if this is related to my problem: the last couple days, .net and c+++ items have been subjects of my problem. This all started after the february 2009 patch tuesday last week.I further suspect .net as on the Security Now podcast, Steve Gibson mentioned a .net glob of 250 megs was involved in the patch. listen to the first few minutes, and he mentions it, but nothing about the patch breaking anything."Then the big mother was a .NET Framework update. And it's 250MB." he says. to dual post, I'll get back to researching my problem, now that I have a desktop back, I need to try other things to fix the side by side error.Good luck.

Recently, I did a full HP system restore and the Computer guy who came to my house installed the Service Pack 3, the latest version. I used to have Service Pack 1.

I have had quite a few problems since then because of the full system restore and having to re-install alot of my programs, etc.

But anyway I noticed today, that down in my system tray (or whatever you call it) on the bottom right of my computer where all the little icons are, there is this Microsoft Updates Automatic Updater with the yellow shield and it said that an update ready to install so I tried installing it.

And this is what it said:

Automatic Updates

Some updates could not be installed
The following updates were not installed:
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5
Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86

I looked, and on "My Computer" it says:

Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

SO- that seems like a conflict since my computer had Service Pack 3 and
the Microsoft Updates is trying to install this Service Pack 1 thing.

What should I do? Do I have to get it all in sync somehow and is this
messing up things on my cmputer?

Also does this mean I am missing out on all the correct updates for
my computer?

For several weeks now, I have tried to install the subject update, and can not get it installed. My update history says it was successfully installed on 1/23 however it does not appear in the Control panel of installed programs. And, each time I have Microsoft check my computer it says that I need the service pack installed. Automatic update has it downloaded on my computer but it will not install. I have deleted it several times thinking it might be corrupted but no luck. When I do click the icon in the sys tray, I get the window that says it is being installed, after initialization, it sits silent with no movement of the progress bar for probably 5-6 minutes, suddenly the progress bar fills with blue and I am told that service pack one was not installed. My computer runs Microsoft XP. We have Norton Internet Security 2004 installed on our system as well as XP Service Pack 2.

Upon accessing Microsoft's LiveUpdate site, it told us that we needed to download:

" framework 1.1 Service Pack 1"

We did. It then told us to restart the computer, so we did.

BUT, when the system started up again, and all our programs loaded, the Norton Antivirus Icon on the bottom bar of the desktop had a big red x going through it.

This means that our Antivirus is disabled. When we go to enable it, we get an error message: "Norton AntiVirus has encountered an internal program error 4002,517".

I've been to Symantec's support site, and have followed their instructions on fixing that error. It doesn't work.

Another interesting point: if we disconnect our DSL modem, our AntiVirus is enabled.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

Help please!!

Thank you

Please can someone help?

A:framework 2 service pack 2

Hello teresa0005000

There should not be 2 versions installed which are the same. Are you sure they are exactly the same?

To recover some space
1. Run Disk Cleanup
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup
Click OK to clean up the "C" drive first
It will take a little while to "calculate"
Look at what is checked for deletion in the box. Make sure that "Compress old files " is NOT checked. The rest is your choice.
The main thing to check is "Temporary files" as they need to be cleaned out.

2. If you do not use "Hibernation", turn it off. You will recover space equal to the amount of memory installed
Control Panel / Performance and Maintenance / Power Options / Hibernate tab, and uncheck the Enable hibernation box

3. Reduce the space System Restore is using. It is possible to reduce this and still have plenty of restore points. Try setting it at half (6%) and check how many restore points you have. If you need more you can always increase the space again
Right click My Computer/Properties/System Restore.
Highlight the drive and click "Settings"
Pull the slider down

I run Windows XP service pack 3, for some reason the other day, I was online and I noticed that the little yellow update shield appeared at the bottom right side of my screen. I pressed the button to go ahead and do the updates, it had said that I needed to install the .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 I do not have service pack 1, I only have service pack 2 and 3, so I clicked the button to go ahead and install this "Critical Update" as it was described through the home network that I am running off of. It went through the process of downloading the update, but when it got to the part of installing it, it said "Updates were unable to be successfully installed" and ended the process. Microsoft suggests to completely remove all service packs, and start over from scratch, and has a long drawn out method for doing so, (I printed out the procedures, but am a bit leery to do it) I was wondering if this is a good idea for acquiring the service pack that does not exist, or if there are better ways to acquire the service pack? Or, if I even need this service pack installed at all?

Before you do any updates, you need to get SP1 installed.
Did you download it from here?
Support for Windows 7 without a SP ended on April 9, 2013 so Windows Update, I suspect, will tell you there are no updates.

When you are ready to install, disable your security programs and remove the computer from the internet (if wired, pull the ethernet cable; if wireless turn off the wifi on the computer).

Hey there,I've got the same scenario on both my old/current XP Home and new/replacement (most likely going back) XP Pro laptop.Add/Remove Programs lists these two things:Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB928366) When I go to Windows Update, it shows that I successfully installed this:Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB928366)So I'm guessing that's the same as the Hotfix listed above in Add/Remove Programs? But the actual .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 is not listed in Add/Remove Programs. Is it supposed to be?I know some people were having issues with this stuff -- so I wanted to make sure I was okay security-wise here (or if I need to do that unintall and reinstall everything scenario). I don't use this .NET Framework stuff (nor know what it's for). I just want to make sure the computer is secure. Thanks!

A:Question About .net Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (kb928366)

Hey there,

Here's the update for anyone who has a similar question...

I talked to Microsoft, and it appears you don't need to have Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 listed in Add/Remove Programs. If Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB928366) came up for you on Windows Update and you installed it successfully, that means you already had Service Pack 1 on your computer. The listing in Add/Remove Programs for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 actually encompasses Service Pack 1.

Hope that helps anybody with the same question I had...

Take care.

.NET Framework language packs contain translated text, such as error messages, for languages other than English. Installation of a language pack is not required to run .NET Framework applications on a non-English operating system; however, it is recommended. Multiple language packs, each for a different language, can be installed on a single computer.

Note: An English .NET Framework version 1.1 language pack is not available as all text is in English by default. To download a specific language pack, select the target language from the drop-down on the right.
System Requirements
Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP

Important: Make sure you have the latest service pack and critical updates for the version of Windows that you are running. To find recent security updates for you, visit Windows Update.

You must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 or later for all installations of the .NET Framework

You must also install the Microsoft .NET Framework Redistributable 1.1. Please see the Microsoft .NET Framework Web site for more information on the .NET Framework Redistributable 1.1.

Note: When installing a .NET Framework language pack on a computer running the Windows 98 or Windows Me operating system, the system code page and font must support the language pack being installed. There are several options:

I have the task of resolving a .NET Framework issue on a friends HP laptop running Windows XP. It seems that whenever the system starts up, an error message is displayed as follows:

hpqthb08.exe - .NET Framework initialization error. To run this application you first must install one of the following versions of the .NET Framework: v1.1.4322

I have tried to run MS updates and they fail due to this issue and when I try to remove it from the laptop I get a query for a missing file: s867460.msp. I've tried to remove it in order to re-install it thinking that the file hpqthb08.exe is somehow corrupted. However all de-installation attempts fail seeking the location of this s867460.msp file. I cannot locate a download for this file and at the moment have no idea where to turn.

Any ideas?

What is MICROSOFT .NET FRAMEWORK 4 ??? I dont know how I got it (maybe from windows update?) but it is running all the time and creating folders on my c drive like "6cb971b272fe3492ac5f35255d" and "9eed1f4ac6c98af0af7842275786a8" and "82614366ca0235de0fecc0", all three are on my c drive and I did not put them there. I don't like junk running on my computer that I don't know what it is. If I delete the folders they just replicate new ones again.

Does anyone know what this is, how did it get there, how do I or should I uninstall this and get rid of it.

Hi SBruce,

You do not have to remove anything before downloading a file that is not installed, but saved to disk when you download it. However, after you download it to disk, then remove the previous software before installing the downloaded version. Note: save it on the desktop to make it easy to find.

For the past month I've been having a very persistent error with Microsoft .NET Framework. I've never had to deal with it before, so I am very clueless as to what it does, is used for, or anything.

(The following paragraph will explain how this error arrived.)
I had just opened Guild Wars 2, and I was now loading Paint.Net. My computer froze for just a moment, and then Paint.Net popped up, closed, and my computer then bluescreened. It started back up with no problems, no prompts, errors, pop-ups or anything. I went along my business as usual (Not Guild Wars or PDN for now) and later opened Paint.Net in which I started getting the error mentioned below.

The problem being that I can't install any programs that anything to do with it. They simply prompt "_____ has encountered a problem and needs to close. Please send details to Microsoft etc." The only program that I've gotten an actual error on was Paint.Net, and it was error 1603. I posted on their help forums for, of course help, but I didn't receive any. (I can post a link to the thread on that forum, if needed).

I've tried running an installer and uninstaller for Microsoft .Net Framework, and both work fine and at the end say everything is fixed and whatnot, but I still get the problem. I've been using Paint.Net for a "Does it work yet" program, so after I try a fix I immediately try to run it, with to no avail yet.

Paint.Net was the first program to start having pr... Read more

The company that sells the parogram told me to uninstall .net framework 2 and reinstall it. I tried this but Microsoft will not let me uninstall .net framework 2. I then tried to download microsoft .net framework 2 again but downloaded and installed to a certain point and then reported an eraror ( something to do with fusion) and stopped the installation. Since then I cannot find .net framework 2 on my computer in my files. Now my computer if acting erratically and some parograms do not work. I am getting error messages in event viewer under applications namely msiinstaller,.net 2 runtime error, system enterprise services. I certainly need help to try to get my computer working normally again. Please respond with suggestions. Thanks. Morris (mnedil)

A:Solved: messed up framework esp. .net framework2

If your computer is running Windows XP, you should download and save and then install the full Microsoft. NET Framework 3.5 SP1 package.

It also contains versions 2.0 SP2 and 3.0 SP2 as part of it.

After it's installed and the computer is restarted, go to Windows Update and do a scan.

There will likely be several updates for it to download and install.

Unless you install some program that requires version 4.0, there's no need to install it at this time.

I just finished a 69mb download for .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update For .NETVersions 2.0 thru 3.5. This update also added an addon in Firefox named Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant 1.0.Does anyone have any comments on whether to allow this addon or not? It can be disabled. There are 2 options in the addon. The first option is to prompt or not to prompt before running Click Once Applications. I chose PROMPT. The second option was to Report All Versions of .net or only the latest version. The default is to report onlythe latest and I left it like that. What the heck are Click Once Applications? Just a note to anyone reading this and haven't installed this month's Windows Updates. This update is notan "unattended" update for everyone. My ZA firewall asked me for permission for two different elements to access the net half way thru the install process. I also noticed even after Windows said to reboot to complete, there was still a lot of processor activity for 2 or 3 minutes.EDIT:I found the info I was looking for in Wikipedia. Anyone else interested, here is the link.

A:.NET Framework and Firefox Addon .NET framework Asst. 1.0

I chose not to allow it (I don't use Firefox, IE is fine with me)...I'm not crazy about unnecessary browser addons or "assistants" of any type.

I believe that these are unnecessary for anyone who knows how do the basic things on any PC, I think they are created for users who are less than knowledgeable.

Ok, sunk a couple hours into what the problem is, unfortunately I cannot work out how to fix it short of reinstalling my operating system (If I take it off, I refuse to put it back on, to many headaches already).

Basically I needed to update to .net framework 4, and my system lied and said it was done successfully. I then tried to update to XNA framework 4, and got;

"The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2908"

Followed by;

"An error occurred during the installation of
assembly 'microsoft.xna.framework.avatar,fileversion="4.020823.0",version="",culture="neutral",pub licKeyToken="842CF8BE1DE50553",processorArchitecture="MSIL". Please refer to help and Support for more information. HRESULT: 0x8002802F"

Which, when I googled it, told me I wasn't alone at least.

I started looking at the 2908 error and found a few links to the Microsoft answers page, an answer and a line of people basically saying that the answer did not work. Rather than including myself in their number, I kept looking, and found the sfc/scannow command (Which refuses to run,"windows resource protection could not start the repair service"(Why don't these messages ever tell me <WHY>?)), and at Microsoft XNA Framework 4.0 problem | Terraria Online

Tried everything. From adding full user control to trusted installer and creator/owner in Windows/Microsoft. net and Program Data directories to therepair service verifier, making sure virus scanner is off, fixit solutions, sfc /scannow's clean bill of health, uninstalling a few upgrades mentioned with .netframe 4.0 and 3.5 etc etc. I get a fatal error if I try to uncheck .net 3.5 (the only version I can see since all other have been uninstalled) in 'turn windows features on and off), smartmsizap, msiinv, Smart boot(cold boot? with the startup items not checked and initial boot config). I think something is wrong here with either registry or program permissions because the initial 4.5.1/4.5.2 install zips to a random c:/ directory and then it asks me to find netfx_core_x64.msi which I point to in that directory, but says it is not the netfx_core_x64.msi that came with the installation.

As of current, I do not have any working .net framework which is bad because 1) some progrmas, ie video games require it 2) my schoolwork/development environments need it for things like Git

Another weird thing is although I manually installed net framework 1.1, only 3.5 shows up in the 'turn windows features on or off' and I can't 'uncheck' it or add the sub trees underneath it. Almost like it is not there but doesn't want to install additional componenets or be completely uninstalled.

Of course it does. .NET 4.6 is included in Windows 10, so you can't install 4.5.x on top of it.

The 4.6.1 developer pack says it's for Windows 10, so this should work.

hi,was wandering. Is it normal to have more than one .net service pack installed?I have three,2.0 3.0 and3.5 sp1.Thankfully everything seems to be running well. But i would like to be sure if i need all these service packs??They were mostly all downloaded from microsoft during routine updates,so microsoft seems to think i need them.I like to keep all my programs and system files as minimal as possible,no tool bars no extras, just the bare minimum. That way things just run alot better. Many thanks and season greetings!! framework service packs.

If you are referring to Net Framework, then yes it is normal, there are several of these along with the service packs.

You may not need all of these as they are specific to certain programs. You would need to Google to find out which programs these support.

Hi, im having trouble when i open some application that requires .net framework 4.5 or above on my windows XP. I read that windows XP not support that .net framework 4.5, the latest only .net framework 4.0, but is there some trick maybe the application that requires framework 4.5 can run with only framework 4.0 ??

A:is it possible that application requires framework 4.5 run with framework 4.0??

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

There's no tricking a program as it will search for the 4.5 installation files to use. .NET framework is a program that runs to help other programs function within Windows.

I am running Windows 10 on a laptop that was purchased about 2 months ago.The last few days I noticed that when I open my laptop, the HP Support Solutions Framework Service process turns on and consistently uses about 50% of CPU. I then open the HP Support assistant app and select My PC, and it just hangs, like it is searching for updates, but does not display needed updates. When I go to the Task Manager and end the task, the computer's CPU goes back to normal. (The process will continue for hours if I do not shut it down.)I then click on the SP Support Assistant icon and am asked if I want to allow the app to make changes to this device, and select Yes. The app opens and I select My PC and the available updates display properly. CPU does not increase. This has happened 3 or 4 times in the past week and I cannot figure why the app stops functioning normally and bumps CPU to about 50%.  Any ideas on what is going on and how to prevent it?

I am running windows vista and Norton 360 v 2. I am getting a symantec service framework stopped message. I am also getting a TOSCDSPD.exe (oxc0000006) message. I am also getting a spooler subsystem app. stopped working message. I read on Norton's site that there have been issues with this. I downloaded their latest version which seems to have stopped the service framework messages from appearing, but I am still getting the other messages and my computer seems to be running slow. What could be causing this?

Hi -

The near-certain answer to your question - the cause = Norton 360.

Norton 360, NIS, KIS and the other Internet Security Suite apps have wreaked absolute havoc in Vista systems since day 1. Now they are doing the same to Windows 7. My 18 yr-olds boyfriend got a new Vista SP1 laptop a few weeks ago and after a few app crashes in the first few days of life asked me to look at it. The removal of Norton 360 from his system was all that it took to fix it.

I suggest that you use the Norton Removal Tool (NRT) to get rid of 360. If a non-believer, you can always re-install it. Download the NRT and SAVE it to your desktop. Close all Windows. Right-click on the NRT icon and select Run as Administrator. Upon completion, re-boot.

Next, reset the Windows Firewall to its default settings -
START | type FirewallSettings.exe into the start search box | click on FirewallSettings.exe above | select the Advanced Tab | click on "Restore Defaults" | Click Apply (if hi-lighted) | Click OK

Please let me know how you make out.

Regards. . .

Hi all,

I have a very annoying problem here.

A friend of the family has given me their laptop PC to fix as something has gone awry. We keep getting the error message "Symantec Service Framwork has been shut down". Found out that this is by the DEP and I can't tell the DEP to ignore this as it doesn't let me.

This is the second laptop I've been given with this error. Last one I ended up reinstlalling completely. I don't want to do that with this one as the kid who owns it needs lots of the files and software on it.

I've tried running HijackThis on it but it fails so I can't get a log either.

Has anybody else experienced this issue and how did you fix it??

I'm really stuck here and any help wpuld be appreciated as I'm not a Vista user either so am working with a bit of a foreign O/S.

(I've also tried recovery to a previous point and it doesn't work either).
