A good free partition manager

Q: A good free partition manager

I have a friend who has Windows installed on a 4Gig partition on a 240Gig hard drive. He has FAT32 with the 4Gig Windows installed on part of the drive and the rest of the 240Gig is NTFS for all the rest of his files. He cleans out the 4Gig one too often because it gets overcrowded and he wants to give more space to that FAT32 4Gig partition. I know that partition magic would be able to do what he wants, but I was wondering if there was a good free partition manager program that could do what he wanted. If anyone knows of that program please let me know

Updated to 5.2 .

Supports AFD drives, I understand.

It works very well for me, even recovering ext4 partitions. It can make a winpe disc for you - but like most of these things, you need to d/l waik for that.

Surprisingly, it also is free for commercial use

Hi all

My internet is very slow, and cuts out alot. So I want a program I can download anything with, and pause and restart a download at any point. Similar to bitcomet or free download manager. I am not going to use bitcomet as I've been told its illegal and free download manager is to confusing. Is their any program that can download all file types - wmv and mpeg most importantly that can pause them?

Thankyou all.

When I start up, I keep getting a couple of AOL instant messenger dialog windows. I delete AOL instant messenger from start up but it returns every time I start up. I also had this problem something called P2P. I uninstalled it, but I might let my teenage granddaughter keep it installed if I can keep it off of start up.

Is there a simple, good, and free start up manager that would do the job for me? I see that there are a lot of start up managers but I have no idea how they compare.

I can't tell if start up cop has a free version or not. Also when I have tried to get to a place to download it, I keep getting, not a download window, but a window for subscribing to the magazine, PC something or other. I opted out of Goolge pop up stopper but that didn't help. If I should consider start up cop, how can I get to a download window?

Thanks, grandpaw7

So sorry, the ampersand and number symbol in the Topic title were an accident!

Anybody know a really good free Font Manager, or even a commercial one that is SAFE to download? I've been burned lately on downloading stuff - I purchased a spyware program that crashed my system and was very difficult to get rid of (thankfully I had the help of a malware expert here).

I recently did a system recovery and later copied some fonts I had a backup of from some time ago. I didn't realize I was installing over 700 fonts. Now I need to compare and delete a lot of fonts.

It would take forever through the Fonts thing in Control Panel. There has to be a better way, but I didn't see anything in the Free Software section on this site. I possibly could have missed it - there are so many!

I need to see the fonts together so I can compare them and be able to delete them from the same window. I tried something called FontList recommended by Microsoft - but that was pretty much useless, as I didn't see a way to delete fonts, just view them.

Any ideas?

Thanks a bunch,
HomesickInTexas

BTW: I downloaded some free screensavers from a place called "themeworld.com" that was recommended somewhere here in bleepingcomputer (I think it was the Free Software section). They're great, but they brought A LOT of tracking cookies and MRUs with them - and a couple of things ZoneAlarm picked up called NOT-A-VIRUS.adware.win32. I've seen variations of that ... Read more

I'm a noob to this kind of thing, so i'm a bit clueless...

What is the best free partition software for NTFS. I tried Partition Magic, but it's a huge hassle to use. I'm hoping for a non-destructive partitioning software.

Note: I'm going to install Fedora Core 1 on the new partition, so I just need to resize my NTFS partition.

I just upgraded one of my systems from Win 7 to Win 10 Pro, and Acronis Disk Director Home 11 stopped working.

I don't want to pay for the upgrade to Disk Director Home 12 because I think that all the key partition management functionality is available for free. And the "OS Selector" multi-boot manager is a true POS.

So what free partition manger do you guys like and recommend?

Thanks.

Hey guys,

Just wondering if there was a good partition manager out there that works through vista and would save me having to boot from a third party app.

I just can't get the Disk management to work in Vista, keep getting the error "There is not enough space available on the disk(s) to complete this operation".

Even though there is 68Gig free it wont let me creat a new partition of any size.

Thanks.

Hi TommyK,

Vista Disk Management is good, but it is limited to not being able to work when unmovable files like Virtual Page File, Shadow Copy, System Restore, etc... are not allowing the partition to be created.

Other than doing what you want when reinstalling Vista, you will need to use a 3rd party program like Acronis Partition Expert in the Disk Director Suite. You can try a 15 day trial version here:

I?ve already seen Paragon was giving Partition Manager Pro for free for a short while. I?ve downloaded and installed it successfully. Those who missed that day, can get it till October 25.
Here is the link: Paragon Partition Manager 9.5 As I can understand, they?ve just opened freeware downloads page. And sometimes commercial software will appear there for free. Very friendly I think for me it?s just like I earn 80 bucks for nothing (professional version of Partition Manager 10 costs $79.95)

So, what do we have here (taken from Partition Manager 10 site, but it works for 9.5):
Advanced Partitioning Operations: Enlarge NTFS partitions without rebooting Windows or interrupting your work, repartition hard disks without data loss, redistribute free space between partitions, merge two partitions to one etc.
Apple? BootCamp Support: Redistribute unused space between Mac? OS X and Windows partitions (great for me!)
Initial Backup Facility
Safe Defragmentation Mode
Etc.
Full feature list is here . The difference is that 9.5 doesn?t support Windows 7.
The program runs on Windows 2000, XP and Vista (32 or 64 bit).
And Paragon provides user support only for the promo period. And only on Twitter . No WinPE included.
You will need to input your email on registration page to get a free serial ? that is your only payment for the soft.

A:Paragon Partition Manager 9.5 Professional Free download

The difference is that 9.5 doesn’t support Windows 7.

Actually - they don't claim it - but it does support Windows 7.

I have been using for a while on my 7 x64 - it works perfectly.

It is exactly the same build as the PM10

The only you don't get - is the WinPE disc and Adaptive restore feature. Run off the bootable Linux/dos cd from within the program to get it in bootable form.

Terriffic opportunity to get a great piece of software - Paragon are the best in Hard Disk Management.

It's even the latest version and Vista-compatible.

Even if you don't really need it, install it and make the boot CD since all partitioning tasks can be performed from it. Hi, I?m about to commite suicide so I just wanted to make a final query before I do it.

I have a 320 GB western digital HD, it has windows 7 (x64) in one partition and data in the other.
I used paragon partiton manager to redistribute the free space (don?t ask me why didn?t I use the W7 features please). It did, but the partition with all the data was "not formatted". It showed the exact used and free space (so no data loss) but I couldn?t have acces to it. I manged to convert it to NTFS... still showed the right used and free space, but no luck having acces to the files.

So I used the W7 function to check the disk... and after it finishes it the partition with the data is empty, the OS partition is intact, but the other one is empty.

I tried everything, so I?m not actually asking for a solution, my question is:
Given the fact that I haven?t erased the partition or deteled it or have done anything other than redistribute the free space... will a professional HD recovery be able to restore the filesystem or the files?

Thanks in advance.

A:EMpty partition after redistributing free space with paragon manager

Use free Partition Wizard bootable CD which has helped with hundreds of complicated partitioning operations here without a single failure. Partition Wizard

First from the Wizards tab, run Partition Recovery Wizard to see what it finds. When you identify the lost partition by size and space usage, tick the box next to it and restore it.

If this fails, use the Data Recovery Wizard or Recuva data Recovery software.

In the future, always keep your files backed up externally and ask here for exact steps to repartition or "redistribute free space" (whatever that means).

Hi I'm a newby so not sure yet of how you guys work.

In a fit of stupidity I installed Ubuntu on my laptop, and went with dual boot, but it just would not see my WiFi router regardless of what I tried, so got rid of it following some online advice, using the bootrec.exe/fixmbr command, which now allows me to boot straight into Vista.

However, if you look at the pic attached you will see I have a huge lump of free space 41.64gb free space which I can't use for anything.

Is there a way for me to re-combine the 41.64gb free space with the C: drive again, the options allowed are displayed in the pic, also there is another slice of the drive 5.37gb which I'd also like to be able to use.

I'm not sure I've made my self clear on what I'd like to acheive, which is to bring both of theses slices back in to the C: drive.

On right clicking the 5.37gb drive the only option is Help, as neither of theses slices has a drive letter I don't see how I can do anything to them.

The only options I have for the 41.64gb free space seems to be to make a simple volume (not sure what that actually means) or delete the partition.

I'd like to get back to how it was before I installed Ubuntu, IE a C: & S: with no more partitions, preferably without having to re-install Vista.

Thanks in hopeful anticipation.

Kev

PS for clarity I've cut and pasted the options for each slice of the drive below the relevant slice

Hello all,

I've got a 100 gig hard drive divided into a primary C partition and a second logical partition (E drive). (I also have a separate hard drive, which is D, which I use for backups). This is a dual boot system - the C drive has Windows ME on it, which I don't use anymore, and the E drive has Windows XP Pro.

The C drive is FAT 32 and the E drive is NTFS. I'd like to be able to delete all data and programs from the C drive and just leave the ME operating system there, so as to free up as much free space as possible. Then, I'd like to shift the free space from C into the E partition.

I'm not sure if this is possible to do. Can I use Partition Magic to move FAT32 free space into the E partition, which is formatted as NTFS? Can folks tell me if this is possible to do and what steps I need to take, using Partition Magic, in order to accomplish it.

I'd appreciate tips and suggestions! Thanks very much. Please feel free to also e-mail me directly: [email protected]

In this case I want to load the new disk as a secondary drive (of course I have booted with a different hard disk). I load the Partition Manager and inside I find that the partition manger does not see the new disk. I am wondering if this has anything to do with the new disk being a Windows 7 primary boot partition as well. I was hoping to get a drive letter mapped to it so I could extract some data from that disk. What should I be doing when this occurs?

Thank you...

A:Partition Manager. Primary Boot Partition as Secondary Drive.

Have you tried Disk Management? Right click computer and select manage, in the left column select disk management. In the lower portion of the window you will see each hard drive with drive letters. If you see one with no drive letter, right click it and select 'change drive letter or path, next screen select add, and pick whatever drive letter you would like from the drop down list. Once it gives it a drive letter, you will be able to see it in explorer. If you have data on the drive you would like to keep, Do Not format it, if Disk Management wants to.

Dear Group,

I am writing to let you know, perhaps as far back as 2011.. I got three hard
drives with this 'odd' ( ------- ) partition that shows up when I was using
Copy Wipe 1.14. It appears on ALL of the IDE hard drives I have used this
program from a BOOT CD and I am unable to remove, delete (F6) the
mysterious impervious to DEBUG command partition killer. I have
tried the DEBUG subroutine with no effect, and even this computer I am
reporting this also has the similar virus/worm infection. I don't know
if this is the w32.lecna.h or mutant variant. It does show the RECYCLER
and the System Volume Information on both drives. I also notice the
CMDCons on my back up drive D: with my storage stuff.

I used Copywipe 1.14 and found this mysterious partition that
can not and will not be removed, and used the program to find
similar instances on my other hard drives. I press F4 to remove and
it won't remove. Oh well.. has anyone found the same instance on
SATA drives and using Windows 7?

I hope there is a cure for this.. I don't want to lose my data and pics.
I wish there is a BOOT CD to purge this w/out losing data.

Hi

You need elevated help with tools than can’t be used in this section!

Please follow the instructions in the Malware Removal and Log Section Preparation Guide starting at Step 6.
If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next.
In Step 6 there are instructions for downloading and running DDS which will create two logs. (Note: Windows 8.1 Users will not be able run DDS and create a log)
When you have done that, post your logs in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum, NOT here, for assistance by the Malware Response Team.
Start a new topic, give it a relevant title and post your log(s) along with a brief description of your problem, a summary of any anti-malware tools you have used and a summary of any steps that you have performed on your own. If you cannot produce any of the required logs, then still start the new topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happened when you tried to create them. A member of the Malware Removal Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer.
After doing this, please reply back in this thread with a link to the new topic.

Hey there:

As far as I remember, I had six partitions when my machine was fresh (I just bought it like 3 months back)
- one for win xp
- one empty (where I would later install Windows 7)
- one where I'd store my documents
- one big empty where I planned to install Linux sometime later
- one big partition where I'd store everything else ('Main' partition)

There was a virus problem with XP - I had AVG installed, and the virus would infect all the exe files on my computr and AVG would simply delete it (the infected exe's) which made matters worse.

Then I installed Win 7 on another partition, and used it for some time without much trouble, except once when I tried some partition manager (so it would be easier when I'd install Linux - for now the Linux plan has been cancelled) when I lost two important partitions somehow (the last two I think, I don't remember exactly). Looking at Disk Management (Computer | Manage | Disk Management), and possibly doing some other things I don't remember I was able to get the partitions back the way they were before (one of them empty).

XP was still there on my PC, I started it once and it damaged the exe files of Win 7 as well. So after a few days I decide to reinstall XP then realised that the drives had disappeared again, this time I wasn't able to recover them. I checked Disk Management, and saw that the two partitions had been merged into one "free space" partition that didn't sh... Read more

Just a bit confused--- since you have a CD-RW or DVD-RW, didn't it come with burning software? That's the one I'd use.

I'm using Roxio 6, it works fine---- I have used Nero in the past--- it worked fine (however, don't use both on the same machine--- they don't play well together--- lots of coasters). I burn lots and lots of CDs--- even masters for commercial albums-- They work fine.

I haven't used the particular free ones mentioned-- but "What's it going to cost to try??" 20-30 cents for a CD---- give them a try.

Let me tell you my problem. I bought this Philips CDRW a few years ago. Hasn't been used much cos my pc crashed and I took it apart and bought a new pc. Today, I put this into my grandmothers computer and to begin with, she only had cd drive. No burning anything with it. I go to install the Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 that came with the cdrw. I have a 56k modem which, as everyone knows is...slooooooooow. I have WalMart Connect, which is antiquated and boring, but it's cheap, reliable, and with nine months of use has almost never crashed, so I hang on to it. But it offers no built-in web accelerator. I want it to work like broadband because I'm an impatient type and I surf alot! So tonight I downloaded a trial of Webroot Accelerator. It worked great for ten minutes, then my browser completely crashed, which my boyfriend, a computer prophet, warned me would happen. After I uninstalled it, and sloooooooowly surfed the 'Net again, I was discouraged by Google searches turning up forum topics such as, "Accelerators suck, the only good high-speed connection is broadband," and other similarly depressing stuff.
Here is my deal. I am running XP Pro on an old Compaq with only 64 MB memory, and 6GB on the hard drive. I am firewalled through XP. I don't use Internet Explorer because I can't stand the pop-ups and infiltration through Windows Messenger to deliver porn ads and other garbage. {I have recently learned how to kill the Messenger Service myself, to solve this problem.} I cannot get high-speed dial-up in my area, and don't want to spend the money for broadband right now. Are there any good free internet accelerators for a computer like this?

I have been using AVG free and I really liked it. It did however steal focus a bit too often for me causing my games to minimize and getting me fragged. That really was a bummer.

I have downloaded and installed bitdefender free and was wanting some opinions from the security experts here. I don't see it recommended often, and did a search of the forums with not many results.

I see the paid version recommended, but not the free one.

A:BitDefender free, any good?

I had it on my PC as a backup. So it was not running all the time. It is a easy and simple one I like. But I did a upgrade to there newer version but it was only good for 30 days. Don't know why it happen like that because it says right at the top I had the free version.
Anyhow I did get it all uninstall and reinstalled like there tech said but had the same trouble still.
Then I unistalled it and went looking around and cleaned up other files and folders and cleaned up the registry.
I want to install it again but was waiting for the 30 days to pass before installing it again.

But I liked it and it was good till that newer version came out and I installed it and what ever bug in it was putting a time limit on the free version.

I do NOT advise using the Unneccesary or Duplicate feature...I have had some bad affects with those two.

Hello Malwaretipsers!
Just heard about Bitdefender free antivirus and downloaded it.

I am very happy with the low system impact
but I miss an exclude feature, and a way to remove things from quarantine to be able to use it.

My question is:
If I use this purely as my only security product will that be enough?
OFC, windows firewall is still enabled.

I use google chrome with adblock+ and scriptno & ghostery.
sure, I might download stuff on utorrent, but will bitdefender free protect me?

Also, the most important thing for me is that it's secure enough to make my banking business on the computer.

Thanks for the help!
I was in a rush writing this, so It might miss a red thread, but hope you understand what I am asking

A:Bitdefender free good enough?

Yes Bitdefender Free is really a fine product, unless you may experience stability issues.

It came as a Cloud Based AV so you need an active internet connection; + you don't need to worry about as it has web filter too.

Is It Ethical For IT Professionals To Receive Free Software?

Last week, Panda Software started giving away a full, free copy of its professional anti-virus software, with integrated firewall, to IT influencers like you for your own protection at home. You can do it yourself, right now, at:
http://www.w2knews.com/rd/rd.cfm?id=030512TB-Platinum

They'll even give you multiple copies, if you ask. Riggs Eckelberry, their new General Manager, is quite candid about the reasons why: "We've found that users who install our Platinum 7 at home become Panda advocates in the workplace."

Amusingly, he also told me that a French industry pal thought he was doing something quite unethical! We do it ourselves - the recent iHateSpam client giveaway on Amazon.com that introduced many IT professionals to the effectiveness of our server edition was hugely popular, as is the Panda promotion.

So ? is it cultural differences or a real ethical conflict? Which leads me to the next SunPoll:

Q: Should publishers give away full product to get it known?

Sure, it's a legitimate way to get people to know the product.
No, I think they should work through analysts and reviews.
I won't touch anything that's not a major brand.
I think it's an unethical practice.
Who cares?
