Solved: Windows Live Messenger-TURN IT OFF TURN IT OFF!

Q: Solved: Windows Live Messenger-TURN IT OFF TURN IT OFF!

This is driving me crazy. My HP has Windows 7 and everytime it connects to the internet (wireless connection) Windows Live Messenger opens down in the left hand corner taskbar near the start menu. I close it, and fifteen minutes later it will open again.
I opened the options and unchecked the boxes pretaining to 'Run Windows Live Messenger when windows starts' but it still repeatedly opens. I use hotmail, but i really have no use for Messenger. The program is not listed under add/remove programs. Someone please help me turn this thing off.

A: Solved: Windows Live Messenger-TURN IT OFF TURN IT OFF!

It should be listed in Programs & Features under Windows Live Messenger or Windows Live Essentials. If you still can't find it listed then go to and re-download the installer, reinstall it, then uninstall it.

Windows Live Messenger screen loads on start-up then intrusively nags me to log-in every few minutes. I do not have an account, do not intend to ever use this feature and would like to turn it off or completely disable it altogether.

In XP Pro, disabling Windows Live Messenger was a snap - Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Component Services toggle switch - done. Windows 7 Ultimate / Google search returns are zip for "turn-off Windows Live Messenger" (or variations thereof).

Flummoxed in South Carolina Help, please.

A:How do I turn-off Windows Live Messenger?

You can uninstall it in Programs and Features if you don't use it, or any other Windows Live programs. Under Windows Live essentials.

I upgraded to the latest Windows Live Messenger earlier today and while the program itself works very well, it has caused an annoyance for me. The problem is that it has enabled Cleartype (thick text that supposedly makes the letters more legible, but gives me headaches) in parts of the OS, including the title bars, inside of applications and the clock. I don't like this and I can't seem to get rid of it. I tried enabling and disabling it in the display properties but that didn't help at all.

Can someone please tell me how to disable it?

A:Can I Turn Off Windows Messenger??

you can remove the MSN/WL Messenger from the start up routine.

download, unzip and run AUTORUNS, click the LOGON tab and clear the box Windows Live Messenger

the next time you start the computer, the messenger will not start automatically, it needs to be started manually.

edit: or just right click on the tray icon and EXIT

How do I go back so that my Yahoo email works like it did before I tried Windows Live?

if you go to programs and features, and go to windows programs and disable windows live, that should take care of the problem.

Ugh. Is it an option? I have Logmein installed but I can never catch him when he has it on. He's deaf so it doesn't help to call him tell him to turn it on. I live a few hundred miles away from him. His neighbor was helping him, saw spell checker was a problem, then emailed me asking me to turn it off.

I'm running Ubuntu so I can't test it easily. Is there an easy option to shut it off?

Wife updated Norton twice and had two Norton Firewalls and Windows Firewalls running together. Paid twice for the 2 updates. Removed Norton Completely and then re-installed Norton 360 Security Version 5, but am still unable to turn off Windows Firewall under Windows XP Pro and also cannot turn on Automatic updates, getting message "we're Sorry, the Security Center could NOT change your Automatic Windows Update setting. To try changing these settings, go to SYSTEM in Control Panel. On the Automatic Updates Tab, select AUTOMATIC (recommended) and then click OK. None of this works, then tried using an app to reset Security Settings and that didn't work either. Any suggestions on what I try next. I would like to reinstall Norton 360 Internet Security Version 5, I know there are those out there that hate Norton and the overhead that comes with it, but over the years I've gotten used to it and I like it very much. Thank you, PhotoRay

I don't recall turning on the Vacation Notice in Windows Live Mail but, nevertheless, it's on. Senders receive an e-mail from my Live account with the subject "Vacation reply" and no text, just my given name.

Where is the control used to turn it off? I can't locate it.

A:Windows Live Mail - I Can't Locate Vacation Notice to Turn it Off

It's possible that the message is from your ISP rather then WLM. In WLM you need to create a message rule, and leave your PC on, with WLM open all the time for it to work. Who is your ISP? That may help us figure this out. A Guy

How to turn windows firewall off? I can't click the Turn Windows Firewall On or Off

A:How to turn windows firewall off? I can't click the Turn Windows Firew

This may have been disabled on your computer, particularly if you are in a Domain (e.g.: at work, in a library, etc).

However assuming that you have Administrator rights to your computer you should be able to turn it on and off by going to Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Turn Windows Firewall on or off.

If you cannot turn the Firewall off through the above approach try the following Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

Looks for the 'Windows Firewall' Service, double click it, then click on 'Stop'.

From within the Service properties you can also stop the Firewall from starting with Windows, etc.

Is there a way that I can completely turn of the messenger service so that it will not just start again once I restart the computer? I am sick of those little net send advertisements.

A:turn of messenger service

Yes there is, but that's not the real problem. The fact that those ads can get through is a wake-up call that your firewall is not doing it's job! You're treating the symptom, not the desease. Messenger service has valid uses, and turning it off is just ignoring the issues with your security.

If you insist on turning Messenger off after this, just go into Admin Tools, Services, and under the properties of Messenger, set it to disabled.

Personally, I'd fix my firewall, rather than disable a standard Windows facility. What other things that aren't popping up are you ignoring?

I am booting a Linux fatdog64 live cd from the optical drive without any problems.
However, the Linux desktop icons show my NTFS partitions (system reserved and c: system partition) and will mount them without difficulties.
I am looking for ways to turn off the hard disk without physically disconnecting from the mobo.
Is there a way to accomplish this via BIOS setup? Disable chipset SATA controller ?
Setting the hard disk in CMOS to NONE will not show the disk, but Linux still picks up the the partitions. Any ideas?

A:booting from live cd, turn off system hdd

If the disk drive is on SATA , you'll kill it off as well if you disable SATA controllers. If I'm not mistaken though, fatdog is Linux Puppy at the core, so you can install it on a usb thumbdrive after you booted the livecd (it has its own installer). Afterwards you can simply disable SATA and use the USB pendrive to boot.

I did make a switch with molex connectors, that would cut the power to the device if I wanted to. It's pretty easy to to if you know how to solder and have a dual (male-female) molex power connector. If you have only sata power connectors coming from the PSU... it's more complex.

Hello Pauleduc,

Double check to make sure that the Windows Time service is enabled, and that your system time is set accurately and synced.

You could also do this by opening an elevated command prompt, then typing the commands below and press Enter after each one.
net start w32time

w32tm /resync

Afterwards, see if you have the "Turn live tile on/off" option.

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

A:Computer Doesn't Turn on, Fans and Some Lights Turn on Automatically

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

Ad-Hoc requires that you restart the session each time.

Connectify pro has an auto start option that does this but it's a paid version, connectify lite is free but I'm not sure if has auto start.

Can anybody tell me how to fix this please ? I really don't know how it happened. Can it be that my laptop is still infected ?

I can't turn my computer on. The fans and lights turn on for a second and then turn off. a few seconds later they'll turn back on and then turn back off. I've had this computer for 4+ months now, i built it myself. it recently started doing this but i'd just turn off the PSU (Power Supply Unit) and turn it back on and it woould fix it. now it doesnt fix it anymore. i've re-slotted the RAM (Random Access Memory) and pushed it in firmly, but that hasn't done anything. i've tried different power outlets and pushed everything into the MOBO (Motherboard), i havent messed around with CPU (Processor) because that's just a pain in the a**... i was wondering if there was anything else i could do before having to take it into a local repair shop, lol.

as for my computer specs

CPU (Processor): Fx-6300 AMD
GPU: R9-270x AMD
RAM (Random Access Memory): 8GB Ballistix sport
MOBO (Motherboard): ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0
PSU (Power Supply Unit): Corsair X500 w 80+
Case: Rosewill GALAXY

A:Fans turn on, lights blink and then turn off/on repeatedly.

First, I would unplug everything that isn't necessary. Everything external except for the keyboard and monitor. Internally, just leave the CPU, RAM and video card installed. See if it turns on. If not, you might try and test the power button. Disconnect the power button from the mobo. If the pin headers allow for it, use the reset button as the power button. If not, you can use a flat head screwdriver to power on the computer (cross the two pins for the power button with the blade of the screwdriver). If you do this, just be very careful. Touch only the power button pins and nothing else! You could easily damage components by touching the screwdriver to the wrong thing.

Some motherboards have a power button right on the board that you can press to power on the computer. I looked at a pic of your board and didn't notice one.

If that doesn't do it, plug the power button back in. You might try and play around with the RAM. I don't know if you have 2 or 4 sticks of RAM, but try and boot the computer with only one stick of RAM at a time. If there's a bad stick, you'll find it through this process of elimination.

If none of the above works, then it might be a bad PSU.

Hello Folks,

I'm not sure if my issue is with hardware (possibly MB?) or graphics card, so please forgive me if I've posted in the wrong section. The first problem I was having was random blue screens of death that displayed graphic card driver issues. I was able to remedy that by updating my graphic drivers and have not had an issue since.

However, ever since then I have been running into another hardware or graphics-related issue that is random and completely stumping me. What is happening is, I will be on my computer, leave and turn my monitor off, and (randomly) when I come back to use my computer again, when I turn on the monitor there is no signal and a black screen (e.g. when I turn my monitor on my desktop will pop up and the light on my monitor will turn blue, when it doesn't turn on there will be a black screen and the light on the monitor stays yellow as if it is idle). I have tried swapping out the monitor to see if that was the issue and the same problem persists, so it does not appear to be my monitor or VGA cables.

The only way I can temporarily fix this issue is to reboot/restart my computer and viola! The monitor works again and I can see everything. This issue is very random. Sometimes I can go weeks without an incident, other times this is happening a couple times a week. I honestly don't know if it's my motherboard or video card or what. My PC isn't overheating, I'm not overclocking, and all of my drivers are updated.

I'm not sure what... Read more

Running Windows Vista Ultimate.

Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email.

Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working.

What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?

Okay, after a tedious hour & a bit of downloading because my mother refuses to pay for broadband[im on dial-up ] I finally installed Windows Live Messenger because apparently(from what I've heard) MSN isn't supposed to work anymore, and tonight, mine stopped working. So, I decided to get Live. I install it, all is well UNTIL I try to sign in..

This really bugs me because when I go to fix it in the thing that scans your settings and makes suggestions it says I have a problem in my Hosts File(happens frequently, tried to 'repair' many times) and a new error in the firewall is blocking it.. I use the XP-SP2 firewall, and I haven't changed ANY settings tonight, so any ideas as to whats going on?

P.S- Im also getting another error number about the firewall, can't remember it exactly. But I checked the firewall and it says Windows Live Messenger 8.0 & Windows Live Messenger 8.0 (Phone) are both allowed :S

Okay the sounds (When they work) Drive me absolutely bonkers.

Half the time, or more than that they don't even work

So I was wondering perhaps if there is a possible way I could use WLM with the previous sounds of MSN Messenger?

I did a fully clean install after reformating my computer (I've been trying to do a clean sweep for upkeep sakes), and was wondering how I could go about doing this.

I've thought about using messenger sounds from AIM, but that could just possibly confuse me, to the point I'd go bonkers.

I just want my old sounds back, while using WLM.

I know this sounds more than likely like a N00b question but I am totally lost in this aspect.

Windows Live Messenger starts every time I turn the computer on now. It didn't used to but I must have done something wrong and now, here it is. I don't want it. How can I turn this program off so that it doesn't kick in every time the computer is started? Can I remove the program without hurting the system?

Done a fair bit of searching around the 'net and, predictably, microsofts own site was no help at all so...

my computer recently had to be formatted due to a virus and since then I've been getting back to normality with it, downloaded the same version of messenger I was running before but now it just doesn't work, have to run as admin just to get it to stay open with DEP closing it instantly but then when I try to sign in DEP closes it anyway

I've tried a few different things all to no avail, running as admin as I said, activating vistas admin account and trying to change the setting in there, different versions of messenger, nothing I have found being suggested anywhere else has worked at all

any ideas?

thanks :)

I have a slight problem with Windows Live Messenger on Windows XP. Everytime that I am speaking with a person, via instant messages, after a couple of minutes the chat window disappears and I am rendered unable to continue the conversation as when I click on the contact's name to open the window again it won't appear. The only way I could get it back was to sign out and back in, however when I go to sign out it always tells me that all messenger chat windows will be closed when I sign out, this is puzzling as I can see no windows open. I considered doing a system restore until I discovered that I had turned it off to deal with a viral problem, as I was told that sometimes the virus can hide in the system restore, so there are no restore points that are beyond when the problem started. I have also tried to perform a clean uninstall, where I wiped off everything of windows live messenger, and reinstalled it. I have also tried another account, however no matter what I've done the problem has remained. So, if someone could instruct me as to how I could rectify this annoyance it would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Right now I want to attack windows Prefetch. I want to chop it into its individual bits and bytes, randomize it, magnetize it, generally annihilate it. But I'd be content to just turn it off.

My particular problem is as follows:
My laptop sometimes doesn't boot properly. It turns on, brings up all the expected boot screens, reaches the part where you actually select your user. But once I click the user, before even letting me type in the password, the computer freezes on please wait. Alas I am not so patient as to wait for the hours and days it would request with no improvement, and so invariably crash the machine with the power button and boot it in safe mode. From here I can use the computer perfectly. And more importantly from Safe mode I can Open in Admin the Windows Prefetch folder and delete all the entry files. Once I do this, I have found, the machine reboots quite happily into normal mode. I do not know precisely what the problem is, for a time I suspected CD-based installers which couldn't be prefetched, then I noticed some correlation to having used Open Office, and now I generally don't know. So does anyone know how to turn of prefetch? Without nitroglycerine?

By the way If it happens to be similar, I'd also like to disable Autorun (not autoplay) for virus security purposes.

Hi, My grandparents recently bought a new computer running Windows 8 that came with a couple of free months of norton antivirus. We don't want to pay for the subscription now so I just want to use the inbuilt Windows Defender antivirus (I have been told that this is decent enough for antivirus/spyware/malware etc). I uninstalled Norton using add/remove programs in control panel but now when I try to turn on Windows Defender it gives an error message. Im not with the computer now so I can't say exactly what the error was but it had something to do with not being able to turn on because there is another antivirus program running (but there isn't).

Any help on what I can do to get Windows Defender to turn? They currently have no protection at all :/

A:Solved: Windows 8 Defender won't turn on

If you uninstalled the trial version of Norton that came in that Windows 8 computer, you need to download and save and then run its removal tool so it can find and remove the leftover file and registry "debris" from the uninstall.

I seem to have lost the ability to load up Windows Live Messenger on my computer. None of the desktop icons work. I've tried running the "msnmsgr.exe" in Run... but that didnt work either. My next step was to try re-installing messenger on my computer. So I downloaded the setup file. However when I come to uninstalling the previous version in Add/Remove Programs, there is no "Windows Live Messenger" in the list ( the only windows live item in the list is "windows live essentials". And, of course, installing wndows live messenger from the setup file requires the previous version to be removed first (strangely, it comes up with 2 error messages when I initiate the setup file).

I have recently installed a new wireless broadband router, replacing my old one which had broken. Since the new router was installed (12th March) I have been experiencing this problem. Could be completely unrelated though.

As far as I am aware I have not deleted any Windows Live Messenger files on my computer. And "msnmsgr.exe" is still present in the Program Files folder.
So... yeah, I am slightly confused. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I had updates set to download and then ask me which ones I wanted to install. But it only worked like that for a short time, then it started installing automatically.

After Patch Tuesday this week, everything started crashing. I did a system restore to the point before the updates, and most things are now working okay. But when I try to shut down the PC, the automatic updates start installing again, and there's no way to turn them off. Selecting manual updates has no effect, they still come automatically. If I uncheck all the updates in the list of 'important updates available' they only stay unchecked until I close the updates window - when I reopen it, they're all checked again.

I did a full system virus scan, but it found nothing infected.

I would be very grateful for any insights into this. Has anyone else had trouble with this week's updates? I'm using Windows 7 64-bit.

'WINDOWS 7 USB DOWNLOAD TOOL' it tells me that my ISO is not valid and when I try to make it bootable through WINISO it tells me that the file has no boot information.

How do I fix my image?

Hi there

I recently enabled the guest account on my PC (Toshiba Satellite L10 Notebook running Windows XP Pro Version 2002 SP3) so that I could let others use it without compromising my files, but now I can't turn it off again.

When I go through Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Guest and then click on "Turn off the guest account" I just get a page showing the standard IE "The page cannot be displayed" message.

I use Firefox as a browser but have installed IE 6.0.2900.5512.xpsp.080413-2111 for use when Firefox doesn't work.

I have Ghost images that I can restore to, but was wondering if anyone had any ideas, before I revert to a backup.

I was able to log into Windows Live Messenger earlier this morning. I did some updates to my antivirus/anti-spyware apps and logged off (I am on dial-up). A few hours later, I tried to log back in and now it gives me error code 81000314 and informs me that the service is unavailable. Sometimes I get the error code 80048820 with the extended error code 80048439.

I checked the server status and it says everything is up and stable, yet it still won't log me in! I figured maybe it was a problem and they just didn't have the status updated yet, so I logged off, shut down, and went off to work. Well, I just got off work and I'm still having the same problem, telling me the service is unavailable when it is.

I looked up the problem online and they all say it's usually a firewall problem, but I don't even have a firewall installed! They also mentioned a problem with the clock (Thanks to the stupid Daylight Savings change) however I can't currently install the patch for XP since it's only available for SP2, and again, I am on dial-up so downloading SP2 is kinda not an option at the moment. I tried changing the time and turning off automatic syncronize, nothing... changed the time zone, nada. I even tried registering the DLL files as another place suggested. It's getting very frustrating, it worked this morning and suddenly it decides to not work and it's bugging the heck out of me.

Anybody know how I can fix this problem? Maybe the immun... Read more

I've been having this problem for two days now. I've done practically everything in this page : but none seemed to work. the messenger did work once after I checked the "Automatically detect settings..." in LAN settings in Internet Explorer. But after that, the old problem came back again.

Here is a the problem:

1. It says,

We can't sign in to Windows Live Messenger

There might be a problem with your Internet connection. Make sure...bla bla...

Error code:80072efd

2. I used the troubleshooter and when it reached Key Ports,

It says:

Failed to connect to the service. This could be due to improper proxy or firewall settings. Please review your proxy and firewall settings through Windows Live Messenger Options. For Firewall settings, please see the retailer's instructions.

Click on the repair..blabla.

3. So, I checked my firewall and Windows Live was allowed access so there was no prob with it. I also disabled my firewall but still got this error. So, I went into the Connections tab in windows Live options and I opened the troubleshooting log.

This is the content:

Looks like it was just the ISP problem because after messing with the router configurations, I managed to repair the whole thing again. Even though no one replied to this thread but this thread is solved.

I have had Windows Live Messenger installed for a long time and I used to use it a lot, but not so much recently. Tonight I opened it up to try to contact someone and it opened fine, but the window included a message telling me that there was a newer version available and asked if I wanted to get the newer version. I clicked "yes" and an installation process began. I had a choice of things to install, but the only item I selected was Windows Live messenger. The process seemed to take longer than what I would have expected, but I patiently waited until it reached 100% installed. Unfortunately a message appeared telling me that it could not install Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live Toolbar (which I had not asked for) and the installation was aborted. It gave an error number 0x80004004 for the Windows Live Messenger and for the Windows Live Toolbar it said it was unable to uninstall an older version of Windows Live Toolbar.

So I figured I would just keep using the version that I had, only that version no longer works. When I click on the icon for Windows Live Messenger I get a message saying that it cannot locate Windows Live Messeger.lnk.

So I went to "Add/Remove Programs" and tried to remove Windows Live Toolbar, but there I got a message saying that it could not find WLToolbar.msi. I then did a "Search" of my hard drive and the search results came up with nothing.

So then I went to, searched for Windows Live Messenger, ... Read more

A:Solved: Windows Live Messenger Installation Problem

I found an answer on another forum. I went to and downloaded a program named msicuu2.exe. When you install and run it, it displays a list of programs that have been successfully or unsuccessfully installed by a microsoft install program. You can then select one/all of those programs to remove. Although (at least in my case), it didn't really remove the software, it removed whatever it was that was keeping me from being able to install Windows Live Messenger. Everything is working fine now!

I am using the latest version of windows live messenger. When i sign in, the status shows i am away when i havent chenged it. When i manually try changing it to available, it doesnt change. This is weird, please help.

A:Solved: Weird windows live messenger problem

By default, Live Messenger will show you as away after a time of not using your keyboard or mouse, or running a program in full-screen. It should show you as available the minute you touch the mouse or keyboard, or exit the full-screen program (the little icon in the tray should turn from yellow to green).

If it doesn't work, try uninstalling, rebooting then reinstalling Windows Live Messenger from Microsoft's website.
